Pokémon Character Etymology Comparison

Most of the time, the translators of the Pokémon games will a choose a name with a similar meaning to the Japanese one; for example, Takeshi comes from ishi, "stone," so he got the English name Brock. But sometimes they give characters random names that have nothing to do with their originals.

Because I'm a nerd, I compiled a collection of examples of this across the main series games, with the meanings for both the Japanese and English names listed. This is gonna be a long post; buckle up, folks.

Kanto

Guriin / Blue

Japanese Meaning: green

English meaning: blue. We’ve all heard of this one, but I couldn’t not include it.

Ayumi / Elaine

Japanese meaning: step or progress

English meaning: a lane. Possibly also chosen because it starts with E, as in Eevee? Sigh.

Shin / Trace

Japanese meaning: advance. Fits with the protags, Ayumi and Kakeru (to dash).

English meaning: uh…the protagonist is tracing his movements? He’s just a trace of what Blue was in the original games? It rhymes with Chase??? Who knows.

Dr. Yukinari Ohkido / Professor Samuel Oak

Japanese meaning: “ohkido” is a transliteration of orchid. Yukinari is similar to the given name of Unshou Ishizuka, the voice actor for Prof. Oak in the Japanese version of the anime; it’s unknown if that is related.

English meaning: So many questions. Why was he downgraded to a professor instead of a doctor? Why Oak instead of orchid, just ‘cause Oak sounds like more of an old man name? Samuel is similar to Salem Oak, a historic tree in New Jersey. Which is still a super random connection.

Nanami / Daisy

Japanese meaning: reference to a type of holly tree. Ironically is part of the Ilex genus, even though that forest is in a different region.

English meaning: the flower, duh. In Western cultures usually represents friendship and innocence. 

Masaki Sonezaki / Bill

Japanese meaning: First of all, yes, Bill kind of has a last name in Japanese. It has never appeared in the games, but was included in the Pocket Monsters Zukan, a supplementary material to Red & Green that is considered somewhat canon. Masaki comes from a type of shrub native to Asian countries, and Sonezaki is named after a region in Osaka, the city that that Bill’s hometown Goldenrod is based on.

English meaning: believed to be a reference to Bill Gates. Because computer man

Matisu / Lt. Surge

Japanese meaning: Seemingly a reference to Clematis, a genus of flower. I can’t find anything symbolically important about this flower that would apply to him.

English meaning: y’know, an electric surge. Could also come from “Sarge.” And they may have given him the specific rank of lieutenant because when abbreviated it kinda looks like lightning?

Kyou & Anzu / Koga & Janine

Japanese meaning: Doing these two together because their names correlate in Japanese. Both words are different ways of saying apricot.

English meaning: Koga-ryuu is a school of ninjutsu, and Janine is ninja with the syllables reversed.

Natsume / Sabrina

Japanese meaning: named after the Chinese jujube tree; big religious symbol in Islam, where it is rumored to be the Tree of Knowledge, and Buddhism through association with Vishnu.

English meaning: Psychic, brain, and possibly a reference to Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Kanna / Lorelei

Japanese meaning: contains the word for “cold”; full name comes from the Canna lily, which ironically must be moved to a warm location during winter.

English meaning: supposedly after a famous maritime disaster site in Germany, which means “murmuring rock.” We went from flowers to death and destruction so fast

Wataru / Lance

Japanese meaning: cotton; and also a reference to a Japanese dragon-water-god.

English meaning: ok bulbapedia’s stretch here is that lances were used in medieval legends to fight dragons. But that’s stupid. They just chose a cool name

Johto

Dr. Utsugi / Professor Elm

Japanese meaning: from a Japanese shrub in the hydrangea family.

English meaning: the elm tree, continuing the trend of the Japanese doctors being named after shrubs & getting localized into tree professors.

Akane / Whitney

Japanese meaning: the madder plants, which are associated with the color red because of the dye they produce.

English meaning: white (or possibly whiny). Dunno how she became associated with an entirely different color.

Shijima / Chuck

Japanese meaning: several options here. There’s a cultivar of the haworthia genus, the word silence, or a term meaning four islands. 

English meaning: to throw. Possibly a Chuck Norris reference as well.

Mikan / Jasmine

Japanese meaning: citrus fruit, specifically oranges.

English meaning: name of a plant; likely chosen as a pun on “mine” or “mineral.”

Yanagi / Pryce

Japanese meaning: willow. Often seem as a solemn tree; notably only grows in colder or temperate locations.

English meaning: it’s an ice pun haha

Ibuki / Clair

Japanese meaning: Chinese juniper plant, popular in Japan for its use in bonsai art. Also “breath,” a pun on Dragon Breath.

English meaning: Lair. As in a place that dragons live. Wooooo

Itsuki / Will

Japanese meaning: Zelkova tree, popular once again in bonsai and also for furniture and drum making.

English meaning: willpower.

Hoenn

Mitsuru / Wally

Japanese meaning: to be frail; also influence from “vine” and “crane,” possibly referencing the practice of giving origami cranes to those who are ill.

English meaning: supposedly from “wallflower.” I think it’s weird to focus on the social effects of his condition when the Japanese name is so focused on the physical aspects of it but whatevs.

Old Man Hagi / Mr. Briney

Japanese meaning: the Japanese clover plant.

English meaning: brine, salt water.

Mari & Dai / Gabby & Ty

Japanese meaning: mari is “ball;” Bulbapedia posits this might refer to the end of a microphone, but I’m not convinced. And dai is a topic of an interview.

English meaning: from the verb “to gab,” and…possibly a reference to TV?

Mayumi / Lanette

Japanese meaning: from a type of spindle plant. It’s in the same genus as the plants Bill and Celio are named after.

English meaning: from LAN (local area network) and net, as in internet.

Azusa / Brigette

Japanese meaning: another spindle plant.

English meaning: bridge, a device to connect several networks, like how Pokémon Box connects to RSE. And then the same suffix as Lanette.

Director Kusunoki / Captain Stern

Japanese meaning: camphor tree

English meaning: the stern of a boat. No idea why his title was changed.

Higana & Shigana / Zinnia & Aster

Japanese meaning: Higana refers to the red spider lily, a plant commonly associated with death and the afterlife. Shigana, literally translated as “this shore,” refers to the mortal world, with higana (“other shore”) referring to the afterlife.

English meaning: Both flowers. Zinnia is usually associated with remembering an absent or distant, but not necessarily dead, friend. Kind of a watered-down version of the Japanese name. Aster is named after a Latin word for star, and is usually associated with faith and wisdom.

Tsutsuji / Roxanne

Japanese meaning: the rhododendron species of flowers.

English meaning: you guessed it, rocks.

Tessen / Wattson

Japanese meaning: passion flower clematis, the same genus referenced in Lt. Surge’s name.

English meaning: you guessed it, watts

Asuna / Flannery

Japanese meaning: from asunaro, a type of cypress tree. Ironically would not be a good tree for Lavaridge Town, as it is not drought-resistant.

English meaning: flames or something? I’m not convinced this is a real name

Senri / Norman

Japanese meaning: senryou, an herb often used for Japanese New Year decorations; also 1000 li (Chinese unit of measurement), a distance equivalent to over 300 miles. Yeesh

Nagi / Winona

Japanese meaning: the Asian bayberry plant; also a word for calm/lull.

English meaning: wind, wing, or winnow, a verb that means to remove chaff from grain via a strong gust of wind. Her Japanese name is calm, her English name is a forceful gale.

Japanese meaning: from kagaribi, bonfire.

English meaning: from “country,” likely to go along with Team Magma’s land theme.

Ushio / Matt

Japanese meaning: tide

English meaning: likely from the “mast” of a ship.

Izumi / Shelly

Japanese meaning: spring, as in a water location

English meaning: you guessed it, shell

Purimu / Glacia

Japanese meaning: primrose, a flower with some species that have adapted to cold climates; or possibly the adjective prim, meaning formal to a standoffish - or cold - extent.

English meaning: omg glaciers

Daigo Tsuwabuki / Steven Stone

Japanese meaning: last name comes from a plant that contains a kanji meaning “stone.” Daigo comes from the Indian coral tree, the blooming of which is associated with impending typhoons and drought. Makes me think of how Steven starts investigating Groudon & Kyogre way before anyone else, as if he can sense what’s coming.

English meaning: steel and stone. Why are the english names so not complex in gen 3

Datsura / Noland

Japanese meaning: from datura, a group of poisonous flowering plants.

English meaning: presumably from the word “knowledge” cuz he’s a buff nerd

Rira / Anabel

Japanese meaning: from lilac, which might just be the color of her hair.

English meaning: bulbapedia claims it comes from “ability” but I don’t buy it

Ukon / Spenser

Japanese meaning: from turmeric, the spice and plant.

English meaning: supposedly from “spirit”

Jindai / Brandon

Japanese meaning: both a reference to a plant and to ancient times (lit. “age of the gods”)

English meaning: supposedly from “brave”

Hiisu / Tucker

Japanese meaning: from heath, the plant type. Unrelated to Hisui.

English meaning: supposedly from “tactics”

Kogomi / Greta

Japanese meaning: ostrich fern

English meaning: “guts” or “great”

Jun / Barry

Japanese meaning: probably from Junichi Masuda, longtime composer and contributor to the Pokémon games.

English meaning: No one really knows! It was his first default name in Diamond and Platinum. It’s what the anime dubbers chose for him when he first appeared, and it’s been his name ever since.

Ayako / Johanna

Japanese meaning: no one knows for either of these names! Ayako has a lot of meanings, many of which have to do with kimono designs for whatever reason.

English meaning: ultimately comes from Hebrew, meaning “God is gracious.”

Mizuki / Bebe

Japanese meaning: from the dogwood genus of trees & shrubs. Notably not related to the group of plants the previous storage developers were named after. Fun fact, Selene also has this name in Japanese.

English meaning: BBCode, a programming language used to format forum messages.

Hyouta & Tougan / Roark & Byron

Japanese meaning: doing these two together since their Japanese names correspond. They’re both named after different types of gourds.

English meaning: Roark is rock & ore; Byron is iron.

Makishimamu Kamen / Crasher Wake

Japanese meaning: literally, “Maximum Mask.” Thought to come from the orchid genus Maxillaria.

English meaning: Crashing waves & wake.

Merissa / Fantina

Japanese meaning: an herb genus; also a Western name, indicating that she’s a foreigner.

Japanese meaning: both the English & Japanese names share the theme of being similar to Kikuko/Agatha. Like Kikuko, this name references chrysanthemum.

English meaning: Ingo is believed to be a pun on “ingoing” train, so you’d think Emmet would be some pun on outgoing, right? Nope. He’s a variation on “emit.” Why? Who knows

Dento, Poddo, & Kohn / Cilan, Chili, & Cress

Japanese meaning: the brothers are all named after corn: dent corn, pod corn, and…just corn.

English meaning: in English the brothers are named after herbs and plants: cilantro, chili peppers, and watercress.

Japanese meaning: black bamboo.

English meaning: it’s an ice pun

Japanese meaning: from the fringed iris, therefore tying him further to Iris. 

English meaning: shortening of “dragon’s den.”

Nariya Ohkido / Samson Oak

Japanese meaning: nariya-ran is a name for the bamboo orchid, making his full name an orchid genus. Nariya is also similar to Yukinari.

English meaning: keeps the similarity to Samuel, but otherwise has no special meaning.

Japanese meaning: kaki means fire; also, the Asian persimmon,

Japanese meaning: respectively, pine, bamboo, and plum; these three combine to form the symbols called the Friends of Winter in Chinese art, which symbolize perseverance and resilience.

English meaning: all three are named after objects that are believed to be lucky.

Japanese meaning: the beginning of the rainy season.

English meaning: supposedly from “Tulip.”

Japanese meaning: possibly from Rose of Sharon, a Biblical term referring to an unknown flower; likely also from the word for “gauze.”

I know I'm probably a weirdo for this, but one day I got to thinking, what if Pokemon was lingually accurate? Like, if characters were named appropriately based on their region? So I actually went through Bulbapedia and compiled a list of every major character's names in other languages. And just in case anyone else was curious, I thought I'd share it.

I'm going from the English base, so I'm majorly not including Unova, Galar, and most of Alola. Ones that are weird or are migrants I give explanations for.

Kanto: Japanese

Red: Same in English and Japanese

Leaf: Same in English and Japanese

Blue: Technically referred to as Green in Japanese since the original games were Red and Green (hence remakes being FireRed and LeafGreen), but is considered Blue internationally and it makes more sense to me (Red picks Charmander, rival picks Squirtle to be better, thus Blue).

The difficulty here is in original Japanese (as well as French, logically) she speaks English, while most other localizations she speaks French. Fantina is her name in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Kiméra is her name in French.

Every one of his codenames is a reference to his appearance ex. LeBelle in German and Beladonis in French.

Shimaboshi (Cyllene): She is originally from Hoenn, but Hoenn is also Japanese so that means nothing for her name.

But Hawaii does have ties to the East, so I will use some of the Japanese names if they make more sense to me. Most are just slight spelling changes anyhow.

Yo (Elio): Moved from Kanto to Alola, so Japanese name.

Mizuki (Selene): Moved from Kanto to Alola, so Japanese name.

Ma'o (Mallow): Technically her Japanese name is just Mao, but ma'o is the Hawaiian word for Hawaiian cotton and I feel spelling it that way feels better.

Sophocles or Māmane: Both names after the same plant, the Sophora chrysophylla, it's common and local Hawaiian name being māmane.

Hapu'u (Hapu): Hapu'u is her name in Japanese and comes from hāpuʻu, the Hawaaian tree fern.

Molayne or Mullein: Molayne is just a different spelling tbh and I kinda think it looks better.

Skipping Galar; there aren't really a lot of clear foreigners besides Kabu whose name is the same.

Paldea: Spanish and Portuguese I look at both languages because Paldea is based on the Iberian Peninsula and not just Spain. However, with Portuguese, I'm having to look at Brazilian Portuguese, which is not quite the same as European Portuguese, because that's almost all that's on Bulbapedia. I generally choose whether to use Spanish or Portuguese based on if said name is also the same as the English and/or Japanese name. Or default if only one is available. Also uhh my order might be a bit weird here because I didn't get to actually play these games. I kinda assumed you go through the teachers before Gym Leaders, so...yeah. I can re-order it later if that's wrong or confusing.

Florian: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

Juliana: From an unknown region, but the same in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.

Nemo(?): She is noted to not be from Paldea but her home isn't specified so it could be anything. Nemona is her name in English and E. Portuguese, Nemo in Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Thai, Noêmia in B. Portuguese, Nemila in German, Nemola in Indonesian, and Nemi in Italian. The odd ones out are Mencía in Spanish and Menzi in French.

Which makes me think of the Riddler.

Doing a Last Wars reread, might post some more thoughts.

While Monsoon ends up being pretty pathetic, I think he starts out rather nicely. He takes Ouu by surprise and causes massive damage to their key players and distrupts any kind of strategy they could come up with.

Yoshi forgot how old Hiros kids are, and how many pups Lydia and Jerome had, lol. Maybe I'll headcanon they had a second smaller litter, and it was 3 of the older pups that got killed. (Lenov, Akira and the other one.

I like that Hiro sacrifices himself for Gin. I don't like that Hiro is dead, but its a nice drawback to GDW (Might of just been anime only? I dont remember) that becuase he lost his own father, he goes out of his way to protect his "new father" - the father of Ouu.

Kurotora is agressive as fuck but hes pretty useless in his old age

"Paradise has fallen" is one of my favourite pages in all of Ginga. Its just cool.

I like the Cross took the pups to safety at Daisukes house. But wasn't that village destroyed/uninhabitable from the events of GDOrion???

Gin should of dropped Orion over the cliff in GDO.

I'm all for having a protaganist that doesn't do what hes told and does his own thing, but they usually grow and learn from their mistakes (while keeping their "ill do it my way") and Orion...literally doesn't.

Uhh it was George/Jouji who couldn't save Minnie from the River not Ken? Chapter 60 makes it sound like Jouji gave up on watching Minnie and Ken had to go save her but couldn't.

"He was a teacher and guide to Tesshin in place of his father" Tesshin was raised by Ouu not the Koga Elder....I do like how Kurojacki and the Koga pack came to collect The Elder as he died. I would say living to 31 is a stretch to any normal dog, but look at Bobi the dog who lived on a farm in Portugal.

I like Zion, he's an okay addition to the Ginga gang, but its sad hes not really his own character, just a translator. And all he does is follow Sirius around because ""family""

I'm half with Sirius, half with Orion. Bears and dogs can/could co exist on the mountain, but like....thats regular bears. Bears who are just being normal bears. Monsoon and his brothers started a war with Ouu. There is a big grudge against ALL bears with Ouu, but perhaps that could of been left buried.

The last page of C72 is really nice.

Here comes to infamous sickle battle. Its mine! mine!!! mine 1!!! It would of been better if the dogs kept the sickle moving intentionally...to keep Monsoon guessing who has it next and keep him confused rather than squabbling like children over who gets a turn on the xbox

I do like how the humans are taking action this time. They didn't do much in Akakabuto's time, but now they recognise the same thing is happening again and they are ready to help.

Akame should of died. This was a GREAT spot for it. His death should of been the last straw for Orion/Sirius. I'll forever HC that he died here lol.

It's sweet that Cross takes care of Tesshin, she did raise him along side her pups afterall.

"He's just as intense as his grand father, Riki!" Orion is nothing like Riki?? Orion is a brat. He was given control over an army just because of who his family is. He's never earned anything, not even respect. He's spent the entirety of the manga arguing and disobeying orders from those higher up than him who he's suppose to ""respect."" He's had to be bullied into not doing anything stupid while the army recovers. He is keeping a promise he made, but doesn't excuse his tantrums.

The way Monsoon acts sometimes reminds me of that baby from Spirited Away.

It is nice that hes different from Akakabuto. he has PTSD/Flashbacks, wants to get revenge and eat all the dogs that hurt. Scared of humans and tries to play around it. Akakabuto kept out of the humans way but didn't hesitate to turn them to paste if he found them in the mountains. Monsoon doesn't even try to attack humans. He has conflicting feelings.

　　冠軍阿響比赤紅稱職，至少他不會無緣無故搞失蹤、面對記者時一句話都答不上來、還莫名其妙就睡了一個館主（那個在青綠家門前蹲點的狗仔���來被人爆打成一隻豬頭，估計是某個會拿精靈球砸人的女孩幹的），但要說他有多少責任心……這果然還是見仁見智吧。

　　幫冠軍代班的渡，今晚依然頭殼很痛。 . 　 　科拿來聯盟敘舊時，貴氣的前四天王讓他著實摸不著頭緒。

　　「你那位新聘的秘書真不錯，把你打理得很好呢。」 　　秘書？？？渡挑眉，他何時聘請祕書了？ 　　可能是他的表情太驚人，科拿的微笑也垮了下來，「就是剛才那個還幫著你送文件、和我一樣留紅頭髮的孩子……」 　　啊，他恍然大悟。「小銀他……不是我的秘書，他只是來幫忙的。」 　　從兩年前開始，自從他提著一大堆文書工作追在阿響屁股後面跑被小銀撞見，小銀就一直無償替他付出勞力。他也曾提出讓小銀不用麻煩，但男孩卻回答在青綠那邊做習慣了不差他這一些事。於是這就成了習慣，接著又成為了慣例，到現在小銀一星期會來聯盟兩到三天，偶爾還會送便當來給當他午餐或晚餐。 　　……或許無償真是有點過份，是不是該實際雇傭然後發薪水下去比較好呢…… 　　至少，他那些飯菜錢理應是要還的吧。 . 　　「大哥！」他眼明手快把咖啡和筆電遠離桌面，才不至於被表妹風馳電擎的掃到地上，「我們馴龍師一族居然出了你這麼個敗類！你要不要臉啊，居然對一個十四歲的孩子出手？！」 　　噗薩，渡手裡的咖啡灑了。 　　「……我什麼？」 　　「你……你不是把你那件最寶貝的斗篷送人嗎？」小樁齜牙咧嘴的模樣讓他一渡恐慌，渡點點頭，「那個孩子、那個叫銀的孩子一臉嬌羞地跑來找我，請我把斗篷轉還給你，說是親自給你的話你絕對不肯收，因為男子漢大丈夫一言既出駟馬難追什麼什麼的。」她順了順氣，像想起了什麼悲傷的事，「他在把斗篷交給我時，明眼人都看得出他眼裡有多不捨，他肯定非常珍視你送給他的東西，或者說——他肯定非常珍視你這個人。」 　　渡靜靜聽著，半句話都說不出來。 　　他不懂的是，小銀為什麼要把斗篷退回來？他更不懂得是，明明小銀就喜歡這件斗篷，為什麼卻偏偏要把斗篷退回來？ 　　他親手交到小銀手上，在說明這對他的蘊含意義時男孩的表情是那麼明亮可愛—— 　　……可愛？ 　　赫然間，他覺得自己的措辭似乎出了問題。 　　小樁不理會他的呆愣，接續著問，「你小時候不總是說，除了你自己以外，就只有你未來的老婆可��碰那東西嗎？！」聲音聽來還帶著點哽咽。 　　「那都十多年前的事了！！！」為什麼這小妮子還記的這麼清楚啊！ 　　「我才不管這是十年前還是十天前的事，重點是那孩子對你動了情，一個！十四歲！的孩子！而你……你也……喜歡他嗎……？」 　　神奇的是，渡回答不出一個「不」字。 . 　　渡輕撫著斗篷，有點起毛球、有點退色、有點破舊，但依然保持完善。這是他孩童時期以來的好夥伴，陪著他共同經歷被一族長老——他的祖父認可的當下。 　　他也仔細想過，換作是別人他送得出這件斗篷嗎？答案皆是否定的。不知為何，明明他只是認為這件斗篷挺適合那位男孩。 　　小樁的來訪令他感觸良多，而小銀則是自送禮那日後就沒再見過。他心慮少年的處境，但若打電話去常青道館卻只問小銀的事也太奇怪，這事也就不了了之。 　　罷了，他想。反正小銀要是有什麼萬一，阿響絕對第一時間鬧到他知情。 　　少了小銀的日子有些難過，像回到往日的聯盟，亂糟糟的辦公室、行政人員代訂的便當、日復一日無人叮囑他要注意休息。效率瞬間降低大半，不，應該說自小銀來幫忙後，他的工作效率上升了不少。 　　就因為有少年在，他才能責無旁貸地處理正事（雖說這實質上是冠軍的職責），在茶餘飯後聊聊天，在有空檔時去競技場小試身手，忽然間少了某個習以為常之人，這已經不是什麼習不習慣的問題了。 　　這是空虛。 　　何時開始，小銀的陪伴對他已然是種理所當然。 　　他還需要些許時間，來理清這有如打結毛線般的雜亂心情。 . 　　又過了幾天，沒等到阿響來鬧，更沒小銀的消息，這天氣到臉紅脖子粗、直接把假單甩到渡辦公桌上的是他想也沒想到的毒系四天王。 　　「鄙人要請假。」阿桔怒道，「鄙人要去桔梗市教訓——去找阿速那臭小子聊一聊人生。」他連忙改口。 　　渡假咳了聲，拿起那張假單，「你應該知道，身為四天王又是成年人的你，對我說要去找個不過十四、五歲的孩子『聊聊人生』，且半點理由的不給，我是不可能讓你准假的吧。」他把紙遞到忍者面前，正色宣揚，「退回！要是放任你去搞事，那是我身為上司的失職！」 　　阿桔憤而拍桌，「要是鄙人現在不趕過去，那才是鄙人身為父親的失職！」他拍碎了假單，「鄙人女兒經常會和阿速在玉虹百貨公司見面，鄙人想說他們兩小無猜，話題也基本都在吵誰的父親更優秀，鄙人也就很放心由他們去。因為阿杏年紀小，鄙人總讓部下偷偷跟著她作為護衛，但是今天！就在剛才！你知道我部下跟我報告了什麼嗎？！」 　　渡搖搖頭，兩滴冷汗落了下來，阿桔頓而老淚縱橫，「他說、他說那個阿速居然偷偷牽了鄙人家阿杏的手！還湊在她耳邊說了悄悄話！你能想像嗎，那可是鄙人的閨女、鄙人的掌上明珠、鄙人從小就捧在手裡呵護的珍寶啊！」 　　這名父親是不是有點恐怖，他到現在都還在讓部下跟蹤自己女兒嗎？「阿桔你先冷靜下來——」儘管這話說了也是白說，乾脆讓吞食獸直接對其主使用哈欠都還比較有效。 　　最後他好說歹說總算是把阿桔哄出去了。這年頭，冠軍（代理）連這等破事都得處理嗎…… 　　回過頭，他與在球中待命的快龍四目相交。 　　「……咳，你覺得阪木……？」 　　『……』 　　「不，當然不是說我怕他，但他好歹——」 　　『……』 　　「他好歹是小銀的父親——」 　　『……』 　　「——唉。」 　　他到底在幹什麼。 　　說得像已對人家出手了似的。 . 　　隔天阿杏沒來送飯，阿桔幾乎餓了整天肚子，整個人失神落魄的。 　　渡知道阿桔昨天肯定搞事了，但由於是下班後的事，作為上司他管不著。 　　堂堂毒系能手渾然成為幽靈系寶可夢，不但隨時釋放濁氣，還能聽聞他喃喃自語「阿杏不要鄙人了她說鄙人是個壞父親她討厭鄙人嗚嗚嗚嗚」。眾人把渡推出來當擋箭牌，指名道姓要他去解決問題。 　　到底！為什麼！ 　　於是他決定拉幾個墊背的，把阿響和赤紅都一併叫來了。 . 　　又過幾天，聯盟又有新挑戰者，小銀依舊音訊全無。上回問了阿響，阿響只說小銀最近怪怪的，然後看他的眼神充滿敵意。至於赤紅……罷了，他不是青綠，解讀不出赤紅的心。 　　新挑戰者來頭不小，氣勢洶洶，卻沒通過八個道館直奔四天王本部。他目標也不是冠軍，而是與四天王之一一戰高下。 　　作為例外（或是為了看熱鬧）聯盟還真批准了，一小時後一樹走進轉播室，對他擺了擺手，「愛情的力量真偉大。」 　　「我只希望報章雜誌別把這寫成什麼不堪入流的報導。」他答，梨花在旁哈哈大笑。 　　阿桔早先去競技場等人了。自從知道挑戰者為誰，他一甩頹廢，換上渡至今見過最正經的臉孔，出面迎戰。 　　希巴狂嗑著憤怒饅頭，絲毫沒有要接續出戰的自覺。但誰也罵不了他，畢竟這場仗，阿桔可會拿出百分之兩百的實力來打。 　　挑戰者——阿速，進入場內。 　　這段戀情被認同與否，全看這回勝負揭曉。 . 　　戰鬥結果不出所料，過程卻是超乎所有人的想像，堪稱精采絕倫。 　　如果時間能重來，四人鐵定奮不顧身直奔競技場內親眼觀賽。激烈的空中交戰不談，整個戰鬥範圍就幾乎沒了半點平面，活像是用了滿滿地面系招式來回輾壓。 　　他喚回體力歸零的叉字蝠，勉強著自己出言安慰。 　　你做得很好，下次再一起加油吧…… 　　——但對於這次的勝負，又何來「下次」之說。 　　必須做點什麼，必須證明點什麼。他這趟來可不是為了無功而返的……！ 　　赫然間，阿速磕下了頭。 　　「拜託您了！！！」 　　本欲離開的阿桔被他喝停了腳步。 　　額頭撞破了，血沿著碎石漫流而下，渲紅了視野。阿速吸足了氣，吼著，「我知道我配不上阿杏，她聰明、有能力，而我只是個實力不足的笨蛋。但是！但是我會變強，我會成為足以保護阿杏的男人！我不會對自己有一分一秒懈怠，終有一朝我會讓您認同我。所以拜託您、求求您……請再給我一次機會！！！」他把頭高高昂起，隨後又重磅落下。 　　全場鴉雀無聲，連本還在冷嘲熱諷的梨花都震撼不已。錯愕暫停了時間，數秒飛逝，渡首先回過神，連忙指派醫護人員���往競技場。 　　不顧旁人勸阻，阿速打死不肯起身，阿桔也無視了其他人員，逕自站到阿速跟前。 　　有了上回前車之鑑，渡深怕阿桔又再給阿速一次重重下馬威。跌破所有人眼鏡的，阿桔勾起唇角，不怒反笑。 　　「哈哈哈哈哈！」阿桔捧著肚子，眼角甚能看見淚光，「這番光景，簡直和鄙人當初去內人家提親時如出一轍！」 　　阿桔的話讓阿速微微抬頭。 　　「要是你真因輸了這一戰就畏縮，鄙人才會真正瞧不起你。」他由上而下注視，「鄙人當年可是還被岳父投暗器和下毒過，直到現在陪內人回娘家時都還會被質問有沒有虧待內人呢！」阿桔哈哈大笑，彷彿這只是件逗趣的樂事，「把頭抬起來！」 　　阿速乖乖照做。 　　阿桔傾身蹲下，雙指指著阿速額前，「鄙人雖沒有那般殘暴，但與岳父仍有共通之處：只要你膽敢傷害心愛的女兒，那怕天涯海角鄙人都絕不會放過你。」他拉起阿速，搭上少年的肩——他在不久後便會成長為壯大、有擔當的男子漢，「還有一件事。阿杏，妳在吧！」 　　天花板一角即刻出現異狀，相同色澤的布幔被取下，露出理頭同樣驚訝的青澀女孩。 　　渡在那瞬間所想的是：聯盟必須要加強警備了。 　　從天花板到父親面前不過頃刻，紅潤的雙頰可見來者是多麼激動。 　　阿桔的表情惆悵，但更多的是對女兒的驕傲與慈愛，「唯獨有句話你說錯了，」他頓了頓，掃向大氣不敢喘的阿速，「鄙人家的阿杏，不需要被人保護！阿杏的成長早已有目共睹，是鄙人愛女心切，反倒侷限了自身目光。方才要不是她有一瞬亂了氣息，鄙人根本無從察覺起，這儼然是一流忍者的實力了。 　　「所以，不是你去保護阿杏，而是你倆得互相扶持！一同磨練、相互磨合，等哪天你覺得自己夠強了，就再來挑戰鄙人吧。不過先說好，那怕鄙人屆時老了，也一定拿出一百二十分的水準來跟你打。可別以為鄙人會對你放水啊，啊哈哈哈哈哈！」 　　小情侶倆倆相望，片刻後才意會到阿桔說了什麼，不禁破涕為笑。 　　轉播室的大家忙著擦淚，在這又驚又喜的氛圍下結束了一天。 . 　　渡在床上輾轉難眠。 　　我知道我配不上阿杏。他想起阿速下午時說的。 　　配不上，這對那稚嫩少年來說是多麼沉重的三個字。 　　小銀與阿速、阿杏年齡相仿，會不會思考也是差不多的呢？ 　　脫稚過久，他都忘了年輕人是怎麼想的了。那件小銀不肯收的斗篷，至今還掛在他的壁櫥裡。 　　他忽然想到，小銀曾埋怨踹翻火箭隊明明是他的責任，卻總是由其他人來做到。 　　他忽然想到，小銀盜竊過他人的寶可夢，而其中之一，正是他團隊中備受寵愛的狃拉。 　　他忽然想到，小銀的個性偏向自卑，甚至顯有自暴自棄的趨勢。 　　他忽然想到…… 　　「嘖。」 　　渡翻了個身，拿被子蓋住頭。 　　怎麼他忽然之間，腦子裡就都是同一個人了。 . 　　隔天他趁著辦事之餘，降落在了常青道館門前。 　　前頭打掃的訓練家傻到掉了掃把，渡擺擺手，表示不用在意他。 　　青綠在後院照料寶可夢，怕水的幾隻紛紛躲在遠處，因為他們的主人正拿著水管在幫其他同伴洗澡。「Bonjour，渡。什麼風把你吹來啦？」他作勢把水灑到代理冠軍身上，被渡躲開後白了一眼。 　　伊布在濕溽的草皮上翻滾，開心地對著他大叫。他索性把寶可夢都放了出來，任由牠們四處去玩。 　　「小銀的話不在喔，他今天跟赤紅去訓練了。」 　　「咳！」儘管一早便知青綠對這種事情很敏感，被戳穿得當下仍既惱羞又不舒服。「小、小銀他最近怎麼樣？他還好嗎？」 　　大半個月沒見面了，該說是時間常還是時間短呢，他總覺得最近明明出了不少事，時間流動卻慢得可怕。青綠關掉水源，朝他嗤笑，「喂喂，別一副思春少年少女的表情嘛，這種行為讓真正的青少年來做就夠了。」 　　赤紅怎麼沒把這傢伙給打死？再不行，把他丟到白銀山上凍成冰柱也好啊。 　　「囉嗦。」他說。他才沒有在思春。 　　青綠大笑，招招手讓他進到會客室裡休息。義德泡來了茶，並在門前思索了三秒，最後還是把門帶上了。青綠端起茶杯，「先談談正事，光為尋得某人近況不至於讓你止步於此吧。」 　　渡點點頭，提及青綠的卡洛斯留學一事。 　　少年喔了一聲，意會道，「代理館主我是想好人選了啦，小銀挺不錯的啊。」渡挑起眉，他分不清現在的青綠究竟是輕浮模式還是認真工作模式，「我沒開玩笑，講認真的。他也接受你的培訓，你總該知道他實力水準為何吧。」 　　確實，小銀在當年能打贏冠軍之路上的所有訓練家，就已能被視作一流。再加上這兩、三年不斷精進，和阿響一樣挑戰城都、關都共十六座道館，基本上能打下個九成不是問題。 　　……不，現在的小銀說不定連館主青綠都能打贏，他可不能小瞧人了。 　　討論一番後，基本上沒什麼問題了，只要當事人答應就能夠定案。以防萬一他還是讓青綠多提幾個替補人選，除去常青道館的菁英訓練家，他聽到碧藍和琴音的名字時臉色都要綠了。 　　那麼之後就是一連串交接手續，他得趕回聯盟去處理，還要想好怎麼應付輿論。阪木之子繼任父親的道館，儘管中間卡著個青綠，且只是暫時性的，但他相信部分民眾心裡仍有微詞。 　　少年輕泯茶水，隨後搖了搖頭，「說這種話很像在助長犯罪，但是……你不覺得你們倆真的很有戲嗎？」渡的茶全灑了，青綠把面紙盒扔到他臉上，「至少你知道小銀喜歡你吧？你幾乎天天吃他做的便當欸！」 　　渡把地板擦乾淨，就可惜屁股下那張沙發，滲了點水進去。他想回話，被青綠一把打斷。 　　「然後他覺得自己配不上你。不只如此，他還認為不值得被你感謝，因為你是他人生的一大恩師，光他叩謝你就來不及了。」這話簡直誇張，小銀是這麼看待自己的嗎？「他還仔細觀察你愛吃什麼，有事沒事就練習煮。你知道誰要負責吃光那些失敗品嗎？我。」 　　後一段話比較偏純抱怨，緊接著，青綠的眼神充滿認真。「至於你，除去送斗篷不說，還為他戒了菸——別那樣看我，我當然知道你以前抽菸，我鼻子不是長假的——恐怕你也沒注意到，你在面對他時脾氣可是好得不得了，還經常笑逐顏開。 　　「赤紅把超夢帶上山時你們跑來勘查，小銀覺得冷，你就用身上的斗篷罩住他；怕他腳滑掉下去，你還一手摟住他的腰。這些難道對你很稀鬆平常嗎？我敢說你就不會對我做相同的事，噁。」 　　臉上稚氣已是比初見面時退去不少，肩膀變寬了，手上也為因應長期扔球而配戴護腕。渡輕聲喚了少年之名，得來小銀緊戒地回問。 　　渡半蹲下，讓少年能平視他的雙眼。 　　這不是求愛，被厭惡的恐懼依然讓他掌心濕黏。他道出了想法，提出了約定，小銀固然震驚，但也知曉這是他深思熟慮後的決定。 . 　　少年舉起手來阻止男人道歉。 Well, I choose yume for this and the above two images represent their relationship pretty well. They are my favourite illustrations and one can actually see the love they both have for each other. It’s like no one else matters. You can actually see the tenderness in their eyes, how much they care for each other.

4. Describe your favorite ship in seven words or less. 

InuKag : they were born for each other.

Sei and Shimako : sensitive couple. Adorable and sweet.

Sakura and Syaoran : love that transcends time and space.

Touya and Yukito : meant to be together in every world.

Seishirou and Subaru : they are meant to fall for each other.

Kamui and fuuma : just admit you love each other.

Akihiko and Misaki : meant to be together.

Nowaki and Hiroki : sometimes second love is true love.

Yona and Hak : always there for each other.

Kaname and Yuuki : eternal lovers.

6.What’s your go-to episode or scene when you need ship feels?

Well, this one is difficult because there are tons of scenes which I love but I’ll do my best. 

Inuyasha and Kagome :

When Naraku reveals who he is for the first time in ep 21. Any episode with Koga, that really shows inuyasha’s jealousy. The movies…god. First and second movie. All scenes I guess.

Sei and Shimako :

Season two episode 6. Though there are scenes in many episodes of season 1 too.

Sakura and Syaoran :

When Yuuko gives them new bodies and real syaoran is born. In the beginning when sakura is planning to tell she loves him but in the end couldn’t. When syaoran fights kamui. When Syaoran is killed by his son and his greatest regret is that he couldn’t hear those words. I guess I should stop. At this rate I am going to end up with an essay.

Touya and Yukito/Yue :

When touya gives his power to yue. I ship yue and touya and yukito and touya. The last scene in original cardcaptor sakura manga where they are together in the kitchen. When touya corners yukito in school, he knows something is up.

Seishirou and Subaru :

Of course the scene in which seishirou dies. Goddammit. I can’ t think about it. Subaru loses his senses [ in Tokyo Babylon] when seishirou’s eye is gouged out. This is getting too painful for me. I’ll stop.

This pairing reduces me to tears. They belong together. They should’ve been together with hokuto and kakyou.

Kamui and Fuuma :

Little fuuma helping little kamui in one of the extras. Well, just read X. The whole thing is unresolved sexual tension between the two. The creators said it themselves they are soulmates, I mean even in TRC one can see there is something going on between them. Subaru and seishirou is blatantly obvious.

Misaki and Akihiko :

When haruhiko kidnaps misaki, when akihiko comes to pick up misaki from his brother’s house, the train scene. There are many scenes especially the ones with Ijuiin Kyou.

Nowaki and Hiroki :

Again, there are many scenes. The library scene. Goddammit. It reduces me to tears every time. When hiroki spies on nowaki, then sends him flowers. Aww. Just remembering them brings a stupid smile to my face.

Yona and Hak :

Episode 24 of the anime, in manga when that festival happened in one of the villages and yona danced in the village garb. There are many scenes throughout the manga.

Kaname and Yuuki :

Well, volume 11 and 12 scenes. Then the scenes after yuuki sees kaname’s past, end of volume 13 and beginning of volume 14, all the scenes in which yuuki says she needs to go to her kaname. When yuuki takes kaname’s blood after being awakened. There are many scenes.

7.What song or songs remind you of your favorite fandom, character or ship?

Hmm, as such no song in particular.

I did read a fanfiction though which had, “I am watching you” for seishirou and Subaru and I couldn’t help but find it hilarious.

And I think, A Thousand Years by Christina Perri suits yume. It’s true after all.

  8. If the creators of your favorite fandom asked you to write the ship canon-confirmation episode, what will you write/how will it happen? 

Hmm. Well, I hope yuuki gets reincarnated somehow and she and kaname live a long happy life together. Maybe kaname is going somewhere and he bumps into a girl, who has long brown hair and when they look at each other he realizes it’s the girl from his memories. And that’s it. After that kaname never sees the butterfly familiar because yuuki is with him now.

X is never gonna end but I always had a feeling that both fuuma and kamui would die. Because fuuma said that only kamui can grant his wish. They both die.

Then they are shown together in another alternate universe.

I always thought fuuma and kamui suffered equally. You cannot weigh their suffering. Fuuma lost everything because kamui made one choice. Their story is too tragic. 

I’ll come back to this question later.

9.Do you prefer to indulge in (consume or create) fanart or fanfic of your favorite ship? 

Sometimes I sketch and I create edits for my favourite series. And I enjoy seeing fanarts and manga colourings. I write fanfictions too. I love reading fanfictions.

10.Smut or fluff? (VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION xD) 

Both. Both. I love both.

11.What ship are you embarrassed to admit you like? 

Not one. They are all great ships. Nothing to be embarrassed about. 

12.What task are you most likely to procrastinate so you can indulge in your ship or fandom? 

I sacrifice my sleep sometimes. That’s about it. 

13.How many hours of the day do you spend reading fanfic or looking at fanart or other media? 

When there is nothing to do, quite a lot of hours. But when exams are there, I see how the preparation is. But I usually spend quite a lot of time on it.

14.How many memorabilia’s do you own of your favorite fandom or ship (clothes, plushies, etc.)? 

Well, I’ve got lots of volumes of each series and artbooks too. And I’ve also got drama CD’s of some series and magazines. 

15.If you could own one authentic item from your favorite fandom world, what would it be? 

Hmm. Not anything in particular.

16.What fandom have you found to be too toxic to deal with?   

Ah. The best question. Well, I haven’t been in inuyasha fandom but I know it’s pretty weird because for some bullshit reason kagome is shipped with sesshoumaru and inuyasha is portrayed as a person who violates her. Yikes.

Now, I have got nothing against shipping characters who aren’t together. I do that a lot but when the same people come onto inuyasha/kagome and sesshoumaru/kikyo fanarts and spout shit, well I get angry then. Because I adore sesshoumaru and kikyo. It doesn’t happen but I still like it and it has the most gorgeous fanarts ever.

If sesskag and rinsess, which is weird no matter how it’s cut, shippers come and say this would’ve been better if it was sesshkag  fanart / fiction, well I get angry then. Sesshoumaru is my favourite character ever and I really don’t like seeing people think he only belongs with sesskag shippers. What the hell?

He is no one’s property. The only character he remotely showed something for was Kagura. And I am not gonna open Sesshoumaru and Rin thing. That is....well. Let’s just leave it.

Clamp fandom. I dunno…I am not particularly in it but I read some comments on some sites and it’s pretty annoying when some people say you must acknowledge kotori and kamui thing.

Kotori was obsessed with kamui. Did she deserve to die. Hell no. But kotori and kamui just doesn’t exist. I mean the creators themselves said : don’t call kamui and fuuma brothers. No. They are soulmates. Fuuma is all what kamui thinks about. Even in colour illustrations which shows the group, Kotori is always seen glomping kamui like some weird obsessed fangirl. It’s disconcerting. Kamui is always shocked or surprised. Well, whatever kamui and fuuma belong together.

And now the most toxic fandom. Vampire knight. I stopped posting in the tags quite a while back because I am just tired.  I’ve had enough.

Zeki shippers : unable to accept yuuki loved kaname way more than she loved zero. It’s blatantly obvious if you read the manga. But the shippers are not only rude but they also get personal and insult the blogger. They mock the other shippers and keep on ranting and raving about abuse and whatever nonsense that was prevalent in the forums between  2010-2014. Now the same thing happens here on tumblr.

Zeki shippers are unable to accept that not everyone worships zero’s character. Honestly, I never hated zero. I was always like, I want kaname and yuuki together, zero can be with someone else. But his fans and shippers are just nasty. I’ve never encountered a single decent member of this ship. They are rude and insulting and love to send anon messages.

Didn’t have much time or ideas to post stuff here lately... But here’s something a bit #outoftheme as it’s not really official... Well, semi-official, I’d say. This is the Pokemon art that Muneo Saito, the author of “Golden Boys”, a much-beloved Pokemon Gold/Silver-based manga back from 2000, recently posted on Twitter. As you can see, it shows characters that we haven’t been able to see in the manga due to its sudden and rushed ending. Even though Saito is sharing a lot of Golden Boys-based art lately, I doubt that it’s leading to something... but think about the possibility... Who wouldn’t want to see a continuation of “Golden Boys”, with Gold travelling further into the Johto region, fighting Elite Four... and maybe even going to Kanto? To me it sounds like a perfect 20th Gold/Silver anniversary treat! Eh... one can dream. But unquestionably, by sharing these arts Saito did much more to celebrate the anniversary than the entire Game Freak. Shame on them. Source: Muneo Saito’s Twitter. Definitely worth checking.

Tumblr Meets D&D

Dokuro Homika

So. I like Pokemon. And I like D&D. Thing is, those two things don’t mix very well. Pokemon makes a very bad tabletop game, without having some structures in place to calculate the absurd amount of things required for something of that measure. I know there’s a few fan-made systems by I’ve tried them and they are a dumpsterfire to work with. So. I would like to introduce you to a new endeavor on this blog. I’m going to see what I can do to make a version of beloved Pokemon characters using all available material, both official books and UA articles, for Dungeons and Dragons 5e. Let’s start with my version of Homika, or rather Roxie from Black 2 and White 2.

Ability Scores

These ventures will use standard array, a set of numbers given as a sort of average stat pool. Feel free to roll for stats if you wanted to use this character, just treat this arrangement as a general order for what stats are most important. Just keep multiclass minimums in mind, since she’s gonna need it.

Strength: 8 (Not needed) Dexterity: 15 (Most important) Constitution: 12 (Wish I could put more, but others are needed more) Intelligence: 10 (Not really important, didn’t want it lower than Strength) Wisdom: 13 (Will get higher later, needed for multiclassing)  Charisma: 14 (Also useful, needed for multiclassing)

Race

Homika is a Human. I could have gone Lightfoot Halfling, playing up her short stature and giving her some extra luck and bonuses to Dexterity and Charisma, but there are other ways to give her those sorts of things. Variant Humans also get some snazzy bonuses. Put the two free points Variant Humans get into Dexterity and Wisdom to round those odd numbers up to evens. She also gets a base speed of 30 ft, a skill proficiency, and a free Feat. Let’s take Animal Handling, since she’s pretty good with the Pokemon around Virbank. And as for her Feat, she has those rollerblades in her boots, so how about Mobile?

Mobile: Your speed increases by 10 feet. When you use the Dash action, difficult terrain doesn't cost you extra movement on that turn. When you make a melee attack against a creature, you don't provoke opportunity attacks from that creature for the rest of the turn, whether you hit or not.

Class and Background

I know what you’re thinking. She plays the bass, she’s in a band. So she’s gotta be a Bard, right? Wrong! The one direction I took differently with my interpretation here is her ties to Koga and Janine’s (or rather Kyou and Anzu’s) family. Homika was trained as a ninja since an early age, so she starts with a different class. I considered Rogue, but the best way to make her really good with a pair of daggers is in fact... Monk.

Monks start with a d8 hit die (which isn’t terrible), proficiency in Strength and Dexterity saving throws, simple weapons, shortswords, and two skills from a short list. She’ll take Acrobatics and Stealth here, other things she needs she can get from other sources. She also gets proficiency with an instrument or an artisan tool, so here let’s take her lute. No bass guitars, so I figured this was the next best thing. 

As for her background, let’s reflect that early ninja training and give her proficiency in Perception, since she’d be pretty observant, and Persuasion, since she’s a little rascal who can get people to do what she wants. Since backgrounds can also give you tool proficiency, let’s take the poisoner’s kit to allude to her connection to Poison Type Pokemon. 

Since I don’t want this post to be massive, let’s summarize her leveling. Her first five levels will all go into Monk, giving her a number of features that let her become devastatingly brutal in combat even without a weapon. Martial Arts lets her punches and kicks do damage as well as improve the damage die of her daggers over time, Unarmored Defense and Unarmored Movement help her avoid attacks and move quickly respectively, and her Ki lets her do a whole heap of rad ninja things. Her character sheet, link below, will go into greater detail. She can also Deflect Missiles after hitting level three, where she also gets a chance to pick a Monastic Tradition. 

Know how I said I wasn’t going Bard? Well that’s kind of a lie. Since we’re injecting some Bard into this Monk with the Drunken Master tradition. She gets free proficiency in Performance and the ability to brew her own booze with the Brewer’s Supplies. I’d say any disciplined rock star can still fight at her best while sloshed to hell and back. She also gets an Ability Score Improvement at level four, which we’ll put the +2 into Dexterity, and Slow Fall, which lets her reduce falling damage. At level five, it’s Extra Attack and Stunning Strike. The former is obvious, it lets her slash with each dagger in her hands. The latter is also obvious, giving her hits a little more bite so she can stagger her foes more easily. 

So she’s got some training. How bout we start her music career? And for that, we’re going to go into Bard. Yes, I lied about that too. Multiclassing into Bard gives her light armor if she wanted it, but more importantly it gives her another skill proficiency, which we’ll take Athletics to help with her low Strength. With her first bard level she gets Bardic Inspiration, which she can give to her allies to bolster their rolls, as well as the ability to cast a few spells through the power of MUSIC. She starts with two cantrips and four first level spells from those in with bard list. First, the cantrips:

Minor Illusion: Gives her some weird ninja tricks. Vicious Mockery: Lets her weaponize her snark to deal psychic damage and make her enemies just a little bit less likely to smack her or her friends.

And the spells:

Thunderwave: Line your foes up and blast ‘em with the power of Rock. Even though your specialty is Poison. Animal Friendship: Will help you start to gather up some bestial allies. Charm Person: For when your persuasion ain’t enough, use magic. Hideous Laughter: Helps you stall your enemies, underestimatin’ you.

Now let’s take three more levels of Bard, bringing our girl up to Monk 5/Bard 4. These levels give her Song of Rest, a way to give her and her allies some extra healing during short rests, and Jack of All Trades, giving her a half-proficiency bonus to every ability check she isn’t proficient in, like Arcana or even Initiative rolls. It’s pretty good and one of the best parts of going Bard. She also gets some schooling at Bard 3, and let’s expand her view of the world with the College of Lore. Lore gives her a new way to abuse her Bardic Inspiration, using Cutting Words to weaken her foe’s dice rolls. The college also gives her three more skill proficiencies, which we’ll take in Medicine, Nature, and Survival to reflect her knowledge of poisons. It also compliments her Animal Handling, making her quite handy in the wilds. Speaking of which, this level also gives her Expertise, letting her double the proficiency bonuses for two of her skills- let’s make those Performance for obvious reasons and Nature for buffing her knowledge of plant-based poisons. Since there’s just so many Grass/Poison Types, right? These Bard level also give her three more spells and second level spell slots, so she can learn second level spells. Let’s take advantage of that.

See Invisibility: Synchronizes well with your ninja abilities, so she would be able to see what others can’t.  Locate Animals and Plants: Helps you find some creatures to use those nature-based skills on. Speak with Animals: Wouldn’t it be nice to talk with Pokemon? This was she can. Assuming they’re beast-like, I guess. Also meshes witht he other animal-based spells you got.

Oh, and Bard 4 gives her another Ability Score Improvement. Max that Dexterity at 20, and, speaking of Dexterity, I want better daggers, let’s go back to Monk for five more levels. 

These five levels will buff the damage die on her daggers, give her some movement options and the ability to redirect attacks with Tipsy Sway, as well as make her fists magical so she can punch all those nasty Steel Types that she mighta broken her hand on before. Level seven gives her Evasion, making it easier to avoid damage from those Dexterity save spells- which you also have a dang good save for anyway- as well as Stillness of Mind. Here’s the easy way to stave off the fear effects that Halflings would have had bonuses toward, but this also includes charm too. Level eight nets another Ability Score Increase, let’s dump that +2 in Wisdom to get a better Armor Class. 

And Monk 10 gives us the whole dang reason I went so deep into Monk- Purity of Body grants immunity to disease and poison, which includes both the poisoned condition and the poison damage type. Why is this crucial? Because it’s the skill Homika had to develop to be so close with her Poison Types like, Dogars, the ones constantly radiating toxic gas or sludge. Now at character level 14, let’s swing back to Bard for four more levels.

Bard 5 makes her Bardic Inspiration dice fresh on short rests, so she can play more concerts. Bard 6 gives her Countercharm, a way to give her allies a taste of being super awesome so they gain advantage on saves against being frightened or charmed. And because of our college, she gets a core Bard ability early, Early Magical Secrets. It lets her select two spells from any list, so let’s actually get some Pokemon on this Pokemon Trainer. With access to third level spells from Bard 5 onward and fourth level spells at Bard 7, she’s got some options. First, her Magical Secrets:

Fly: How could she not get her trusty Crobat to fly her places? Pass without Trace: A handy ability to make other people nearly as sneaky as her, and it could be flavored as a sort of arcane smokescreen, which ties in well with her Dogars. 

And for the other spells from her Bard levels:

Earth Tremor: A solid representation of her Scolipede’s Bulldoze move. Hold Person: It takes some flavor, but this could be a bunch of grasses and vines tying down a foe, a good example of Ruffresia’s Grass Knot.  Stinking Cloud: Took some time, but we have poison damage now with this stink cloud, which could be a great Sludge Bomb or Sludge Wave sorta thing, representing Dogars really well. Phantasmal Killer: And finally, a spell added to the Bard’s list from a recentish Class Feature Variant UA. This creates a nightmarish creature that spooks the heck outa your foes to murderify things. Sounds like a good Gangar substitute to me! And lines up with your other abilities pretty well.

Bard 8 also gives her another Ability Score Improvement, let’s dump that +2 into Charisma so she isn’t such a terrible Bard. 

And finally, two more levels in Monk to buff her Martial Arts one step further and give her a final Ability Score Improvement at Monk 12, so dump that in Wisdom to finally have a pretty dang respectable AC of 19. 

Final Thoughts

Monk 12/Bard 8 is a pretty solid combination. She doesn’t lose out on any ASIs, she has great damage with a capped Dexterity, varied ways of dealing damage with Bard spells, and spectacular team play with Bardic Inspiration. Not to mention fantastic utility with all her skills. 

Unfortunately, that usefulness came at a cost. Her hit points, taking the average, are well under 100 and fully capable of getting squooshed easily. Not to mention that neither her Wisdom nor her Charisma are capped, which weakens both her Ki saves and her Spell saves respectively. Having to focus on two mental stats makes her a little bit less effective at both of them. That said, this build works best as a sort of ambush tactic. Cast one of your ranged spells to lock down a foe, move in close to stabby-stab, and then duck out so you don’t get hit. Your movement speed is freakin’ 60, make use of that.
