#Kyoshi being bisexual and in love with Rangi

After reading the Chronicles Of The Avatar books, I have come to one conclusion: F.C. Yee deserves all of the praise. Like, his books are so good. I mean, focusing on the stories of the previous avatars was just genius, but Yee did an amazing job. His writing style is so easy to get into and he balances the different tones in his books seamlessly.
The Dawn Of Yangchen is slower than The Rise Of Kyoshi and The Shadow Of Kyoshi, which normally I would complain about, but the pacing fits with the stories he's telling. The Kyoshi novels were more fast paced because Kyoshi herself is engaging in more adventure and throughout the novels, there's an underlying sense of urgency. In Yangchen's novel, the story is slower cause it's more about politics and espionage, but it never feels like the story is dragging.
The action scenes are just as engaging as the scenes where characters are just having conversations with each other. Besides everything that Yee does amazingly at-exposition, setting, detail, humor, foreshadowing, personal stakes, differentiating multiple point-of-views, character development-, my favorite thing that he writes are the characters themselves.
In the past, I've read books by the same authors who continually make their characters feel like the exact same person, but F.C. Yee makes all the characters in Chronicles Of The Avatar so uniquely different in their personalities, their mindsets, their motivations, just everything.
Yangchen is distinct from Kuruk who's distinct from Kyoshi who's distinct from Aang. They're all the same and opposites of each other, and Yee makes us root for all of them. Yangchen is a compassionate women worn-out from the cruelties of the people. We want to see her unveil the corrup politicians and make Bin-Er a better place. Kyoshi is a strong women born from tragedy and heartbreak. We want to see Kyoshi bring justice down upon Jianzhu and get her best friend back. We want to see them be the people that we know them as. But we see them be young and make mistakes and the complexities of human nature.
But it's not just the Avatars.
The companions are just as memorable. Proud, confident Kirima; brave, perfectionist Wong; brash, loyal Lek; patient, caring Jinpa; and fierce, loving Rangi. Tayagum and Akuudan being the loyal warriors, Jujinta being the unexpected fearsome ally, and Kavik being the conflicted friend turned betrayer. They all have their places where they fit and not one person feels unnecessary.
The familial units are also very interesting. Kyoshi's parents leaving her and Kelsaang picking up the slack and being her new father. Yun having Jianzhu be the one there for him to succeed (and then to die). Rangi's conflicted relationship with her mother and how her legacy affects her. Kavik's distance from his parents, and his conflict between his brother and Yangchen. Yangchen's relationship with her sister and how that affects her relationship with spirits (and everyone else).
The camaraderie and relationship growth and joy and relationship deterioration and bittersweetness and tragedy of them all.
Even the antagonists and villains feel more than one-dimensional. We see Jianzhu cause tragedy in his righteous mindset. We watch Yun turn from a hero to a villain. We witness the Shangs and Zongdus and every other corrupt person in power.
They all feel like people and not cardboard cutouts, and I applaud F.C. Yee for all that he's done.
#also can we just talk about the casual queer representation#Kyoshi being bisexual and in love with Rangi#Tayagum and Akuudan being husbands#and Yangchen being aroace (although I think Yee left it up to interpretation IDK)#these books made me feel alive and made me remember why I love to read#chronicles of the avatar#the rise of kyoshi#the shadow of kyoshi#the dawn of yangchen#f.c. yee#atla#avatar the last airbender#my post

thinking about that iconic tiktok of avatar wan telling rava "we only into girls, okay?" and how it actually ended up being unintentionally canon that whenever an avatar becomes spiritual they are in fact....into women
korra: not spiritual, was into mako, got spiritual, went for asami
aang: raised in a bisexual culture, highly spiritual, opens his eyes at age 11 fresh off the ice and falls for the first girl he sees
roku: only ever loved a woman (ta min)
kyoshi: had a crush on yun prior to even knowing she was the avatar. became the avatar, connected to her past lives, fell for rangi
kuruk: disaster of a man, loved many women
yangchen: unconfirmed (but new book soon)
szeto: no confirmed wife/lover -- he never did anything spiritual at all. guy was just an incredibly skilled bureaucrat. did a lot of math. maybe the only gay male avatar.

I feel as though these movies are just going to be adaptations of the Rise of Kyoshi, The Search, and Ruins of the Empire respectively. I’m excited for the first of those three myself, even though I was hoping for some original content myself.
While this is probably the most likely scenario, I do wonder about it. If so, it would be a death blow to the idea of Avatar expanded media, since any books and comics would be proven to be 'non-canon' and mere fodder for adaptation. Sure, the adaptations might be close, but nothing is exact, and it's clear where the priority would be in terms of importance. Since we live in a fandom age where individual lines and word choices are endlessly analyzed for discussions and arguments (never mind the arguments about what counts as canon), I think making books and comics into disposable raw material for more 'important' media would turn them into a ghetto of lesser stuff only of interest to the hyper-fans.
At the same time, it is questionable how a solid Zuko movie could be made without touching on the solution to the whole 'mother subplot,' and it would feel weird to address things like Azula or Mai and treat Ursa's fate as a solved mystery, especially with the baggage of her new family. I joke that I'm only interested in seeing the Maiko subplot finally resolved after a decade, but it boggles my mind how such a thing could be introduced even in an otherwise standalone story, since I doubt all modern Avatar fans have read a dumb kiddie comic from a decade ago. And presumably these movies would need to have appeal beyond just Avatar fans, so that's even more incentive to make them entirely standalone.
(That's one reason I'm so surprised to see existing characters being used for these movies. I mean, even Spider-Man, one of the most popular characters in modern popular media, can only gross $375.5 million from an animated movie. That's a little over half what his worst-received live action movie got, a movie that forced a reboot on the franchise. Korra, who couldn't even keep her series on television, is going to make back a feature animated film budget? Sure, her cultural cachet has grown since she became a bisexual icon, but I don't know if that's going to translate into sales. Zuko is popular, but I don't know that he's a theater draw. And Kyoshi is really only known to Avatar fans, and not all of us have even read her books; all she really has going for her is a striking look. I'd think new characters designed for broad appeal and easy accessibility would be easier to work with.)
Kyoshi and Korra are easier to make movies out of without overriding their expanded media. The Kyoshi books just get her started on her Avatar career, so it would be simple to come up with a new standalone adventure for her, and existing elements like her love-interest Rangi and her strained relationship with the current Fire Lord would be easy to introduce to new audiences without making them feel like they missed something. Likewise, Korra already had different adventures in each season of her series, so finding something new for her to do would be easy. Her extended cast would be a little more troublesome to bring in and introduce to new audiences, but that could be a good thing; refocusing on only the relevant members of her cast could make for better storytelling than LoK, which several times tripped over itself trying to come up with ways to include everyone.
So yeah, I feel like it could break either way. Merely making these into adaptations would kill the extended media, but trying to keep it all consistent is harder than they probably want to work.
Of course, we all know my ideal scenario: everything but the Gene Yang comics is left as canon, while those are adapted into something that's actually good. But I'm not holding my breath for that one.

My grandma being a genius v2
Me re-reading Kyoshi novels yet again and telling my grandma ALL the romance to prove her Rangi is not a man and there is no plot twist: See? They kissed again and they love each other and Rangi is a woman
My grandma: So Kyoshi is a lesbian then? What a shame, I kinda liked her
Me, clearly not seeing why can’t she still like her: She is bisexual but I don’t see why is it a shame
My grandma trying not to sound homophobic: You know, I was hoping for more umm action! And less romance
Me slowly dying of laughter from the inside: Yea? More action? Okay
Some time later
Me describing Kyoshi attacking Yun and the epic battle and how awesome Kyoshi and Rangi were: Theres a lot of action
My grandma: Oh yea, I see
Me, through tears: BUT THAT’S NOT ALL
Me, describing how badly Yun injured Rangi and the whole scene where Kyoshi kills Yun because he attacked the love of her life
My grandma: Will she die?
Me: No, ofc not, Kyoshi saved her
My grandma: I kinda hoped she would die, she was nothing but trouble all along
Me internally: WHAT THE HELL

Thoughts about Rangshi?
I like them! I don’t have a whole lot of specific thoughts--I enjoyed their relationship development throughout Rise of Kyoshi, but I haven’t read Shadow yet (part of me is still clinging to the vain hope that they’ll be able to save Yun and pull him into their polycule, and if I don’t read it then that’s still possible, right???), it’s sitting on my shelf right now but I’ve just been doing a bunch of Other Things and haven’t set aside time to read it. I’m sure I’ll enjoy them in SoK too!
The only think I don’t like about Rangshi is, honestly, the way the fandom latched on, if that makes sense? Like, Kyoshi lived to be over two centuries old. She’s a sixteen-year-old girl when the novels begin. I love her relationship with Rangi, but I don’t love this stubborn insistence that Rangi was the only love who mattered in Kyoshi’s life, sometimes to the point of claiming that Rangi must have lived just as long as Kyoshi and they were together forever.
First of all, the line that infamously canonized Kyoshi’s bisexuality (and for the love of all that is holy, she is bi, I keep seeing people in the fandom erasing that and it bothers me) is “By all accounts, Avatar Kyoshi loved both men and women”.
That would not have been common enough knowledge to have been passed down over the centuries if Rangi was the only love of Kyoshi’s life. And frankly, there is more than enough ‘the Avatar found their One And Only Love at a stupidly young age and never loved anyone else’ in the franchise. People even frequently erase Mako’s importance to Korra (I saw a post once claiming the Avatar never dates a man in the entire franchise and I just had to take a second to scream silently about it), and it bothers me that we have a character who lived for nearly two and a half centuries, and many people in the fandom still refuse to acknowledge the possibility that someone who lived so long could have multiple Great Loves in her life.
Rangi was absolutely Kyoshi’s first love. That doesn’t mean she was her only love, she certainly wasn’t her last love, and it also doesn’t mean she was her greatest love, because love is not quantifiable and any Great Loves she had after Rangi would be just as special and meaningful to her, and I think the concept of someone being able to love fully and deeply and truly multiple times throughout her life is absolutely beautiful, and should stop being erased.

hii mailee hcs?? 💕
mailee!! them 🥰
i think it takes them forever to get together because they stumble into all these near misses
ty lee has liked mai since she was little but mai had the biggest crush on zuko and well, no little girl is compeletley nice, so she might’ve been the one to suggest to azula that they tease mai about her crush out of four year old jealousy (this being back when mai and azula and ty lee were very little and their relationship was actually close to a real friendship)
ty lee is ridiculously jealous when mai and zuko finally get together but she tries to hide it because being happy like mai and zuko are is something that they don’t really get to have right now
then mai and zuko get back together after zuko breaks up with mai over letter and ty lee is much more 😐 she is still mai’s best friend but it’s much more difficult for her to see mai getting into a relationship with zuko when ty lee KNOWS she would take care of mai and be the best girlfriend ever
so she goes to the kyoshi warriors and she makes new friends and she goes on dates with girls and she still sends letters to mai and misses the girl she’s loved for most of her life
mai hears about one of ty lee’s girlfriends and it’s the biggest bonk of mai’s life because of course mai knew that girls could like girls (rangi being a legend at the fire nation academy for girls) but hearing that ty lee’s come out as a lesbian and is dating other girls? well that’s a lot more personal
because....if ty lee can like girls....could mai like girls?
the answer is yes 😌 but even while mai is slowly becoming accustomed to liking girls too (after a very eye opening conversation with sokka about bisexuality) she still hasn’t really realize she might like ty lee
she has however been feeling this really weird feeling every time she hears about ty lee going on a date with someone else that she doesn’t know how to describe
mai and zuko break up - again. when zuko tries to win her back - again - mai says no. because somehow, she knows that theres more out there
ty lee finds out that mai and zuko have apparently broken up for good so she takes leave from the kyoshi warriors and goes to visit mai to comfort her through this, it hurts to help the girl she loves get over someone else but mai is her best friend too and she’s always going to be there for her
i am not describing all of mai and ty lee’s time on ty lee’s leave but it basically goes mai realizing slowly that she might like ty lee and kissing ty lee before ty lee goes and ty lee leaves with both of them a mess of emotions
mai sends sokka (i converted myself into being a mai and sokka friendshp stan in this post) a letter asking for help and sokka is like what mai is asking for MY help?? and rushes over and mai tells sokka what happened and sokka is 😐 your in love with ty lee go after her and tell her that
mai: OH oh wow i am 🥺🥰 so she rushes after ty lee and meets her on the dock on kyoshi island and she confesses gently and ty lee confesses back and they hold hands and then suki, who has been keeping up with both sides of this story through ty lee and sokka’s letters, gives ty lee an extra day off
ty lee takes mai to her home and they get to know each other and mai asks ty lee out and gives her one of her knives and they are girlfriends. eventually mai moves in with ty lee and opens up a flower shop that is really a cover for the white jade/white lotus (which ever you prefer) and they’re happy :)
#sapphic saturday#idk how long this actually is but i actually like it so u all have to see the whole thing#mailee#kiaraalazulu#💌

The Rise of Kyoshi, pg 1-224 (first half of the book)
@myownzinger so i started reading this, I’m curious to know other people’s thoughts! What did you like/dislike about it?
Here’s my quick thoughts:
My biggest impression, and this says more about where my priorities are as a reader than anything else, is that the prose is just…okay. I know that this is a book for children/teens, but there are places where I think the pacing is a bit off, and the action gets hard to follow. Yee isn’t bad, necessarily, but on a technical level he isn’t on the same level as Philip Pullman and Tamora Pierce who do similarish children’s fantasy stuff. But Pullman and Pierce are stone cold legends, so maybe that’s not a fair comparison…
WHAT I LIKED
The world feels truly “Asian” in a very fun way - Kyoshi’s village makes seasweed kimchi (“fermented sea kelp”), she gets scolded for tanning outside in the sun, all the descriptions of the architecture, the political structure, etc. etc. feels really....asian.
I was not expecting to really feel sad over Kuruk! But the handful of details you get feels oddly very…adult? And very sad. He died young, only 33, and had no achievements other than being very good at Pai Sho and writing poetry. I think I’m so used to Aang and Korra saving the world and being the heroes of these grand narratives that discovering an avatar who literally did…none…of those things is jarring.
SPOILERS BELOW CUT
speaking of poetry - the way that one of Kyoshi’s mentors recognise her as the Avatar is through poetry, when Kyoshi starts reciting poetry that Kuruk wrote and that she had no way of knowing. It really fells like a coherent fantasy world with its own culture.
Kuruk’s poetry itself is uh, questionable: “I got hair like the starless night/ it sticks to my lips when I smile / I’ll wind it with yours and we’ll drift off course / in a ship touching hearts all the while” OKAY SURE KURUK STICK TO PAI SHO
Speaking of which, Kuruk gives me major Sokka in @friendlystrawberry’s in the after days vibe. Water Tribe dude just drifting around writing poetry and shit, being chill
Kyoshi is SO BISEXUAL.
I couldn’t remember if she canonically gets together with Rangi or if it’s a coy “gal pals” situations, but wow, they are heading towards canon. They share such a cute ‘oh no we have to share a tent’ scene in the first half of the book, and Kyoshi gets very shy and cute over how nice Rangi’s hair smells. I like it.
So Avatar Kuruk also had a whole crew: Jianzhu the earthbender; Hei-Ran the firebender, and Kelsang the airbender. He apparently had a thing for Hei-Ran before he meets Ummi (woman whose face is taken by Koh), and now Hei-Ran is Rangi’s mother, and now Kyoshi has a crush on Rangi. IT ALL COMES FULL CIRCLE
Jianzhu and Kelsang give me very…weary ex-boyfriends who have fallen out vibes. For people who like niche Piandao/Jeong Jeong stuff, allow me to present an EVEN MORE NICHE pairing
I really love Kyoshi’s bending handicap, which is so interesting: she’s very bad in fights, because she’s too powerful. She can lift mountains, but she can’t control a pebble without crushing it. So actually, she’s not very good at fighting and everyday tasks, but she can perform goddamn miracles at crutch moments. It’s such a good storytelling note.
WHAT I’M NEUTRAL ON
Kyoshi’s parents turning out to be outlaws. On a plot level we need it to move the second half of the book’s events, but the whole “secret outlaw underworld” stuff feels a bit…silly. The book also gave itself a difficult task of introducing a whole new cast of characters midway through, which is very tough to pull off. Not sure I’m a fan yet.
Also, the wuxia influences are so clear. It’s clearly SO influenced by those 80s-90s action novels/movies about martial artists in ancient China traveling the jianghu. This really kicked in after Kyoshi leaves her home village, and I s c r e a m e d when she gets to the outlaw teahouse and stars getting ~trained in the mystical arts~ by the ragtag group of thieves and outlaws. I’m not a wuxia fan so this hits neutral for me, but holy shit I do appreciate the attempt
WHAT I’M MEH ON
see above on pacing/prose/writing

please hit me with those headcanons!!! i too fixate on past avatars and would love to hear your thoughts!
me 🤝 you
fixating on past avatars
under the cut <3
Kuruk was definitely a wild child when she was a toddler, so her terrible twos lasted until she was at least 6 or 7
Roku was really shy when he was a child and it somewhat carried over into his adult life so he still has trouble trying to walk up and talk to people at times
Speaking of Roku, he’s a good dancer!! he definitely surprised Ta Min at their wedding and pulled her onto the dance floor
Yangchan was definitely a bisexual demigirl, she definitely didn’t figure that out until really late in life though, probably at like, 90 or so
They all use neopronouns <3
Wan uses: He/Pup/Xe
Szeto: They/Ne
Salai: He/Ve
Yangchan: She/He/Bun
Kuruk: Pup/Paw/E/She
Kyoshi: She/Ae
Roku: He/Kit
Aang: Bun/Kit/He/Fae
Korra: She/It/Ve/Xe/Pup
^^^^ prolly will be using these throughout
Salai!! My boy, even though we barely know anything about him other than his name and that he was either the air avatar before Yangchan or the earth avatar before Kyoshi, I feel like ve would be a good herbalist, the best in the Earth Kingdom actually, ve ended up spending a lot of his time in the medical field and in hospitals almost as much as time he spends traveling around the world being the avatar
I said this multiple times a before and I will continue saying it, Kuruk is a little spoon, e feels safe and loved and protected when she’s the one being held
she prolly also likes being on the bottom
Modern AU Kyoshi and Kuruk once started a riot in a mall once
Nobody knows how or why but they did and the only thing that they learned from it was that they shouldn’t be left alone together, especially in public places
Yangchan had a goth phase all throughout her teenage years
She wore mainly black and dark orange but he also wore yellow and black
Wan was in a relationship with Jaya, the human guy from his lion turtle
After Katara, Tonraq was Korra’s favorite waterbending instructor, so they often bonded through waterbending
The first thing Korra her dad was a flower made out of ice pup made out of ice
Aang knows how to make dresses!! And fae is really good at it
Aang made the dress Katara wore on their wedding night
Roku was prolly the cutest dad when he had his daughter, he was often seen with her whenever he didn’t have important avatar things to do, when she was old enough to walk and run he would sometimes place her on kit’s feet and danced with her
Ta Min also caught them napping together a few dozen times
And by proxy he was a cute grandpa as well
At one point, Szeto had two boyfriends
One of them was from the NWT while the other was from the Earh Kingdom
They ended up breaking up in their late teens, a few years after Szeto started their airbending training
Korra had a crush on Tenzin during it’s airbending training
Korra also had a crush on Katara for the longest time
Roku dated Sid (his earthbending teacher) sometime after Roku mastered the avatar state
They ended up breaking up around the time Roku went to visit Sozin and found out he was gonna start colonizing the other nations
Wan is the shortest avatar after Roku
Kyoshi: 7′1
Aang: 6′9
Yangchan: 6′6
Kuruk: 6′1
Salai: 5′11
Szeto: 5′9
Korra: 5′8
Roku: 5′7
Wan: 5′5
Wan didn’t know that neopronouns existed until xe was banished to the spirit wilds
After pup learned about them, he officially started the trend of the avatar using neopronouns
Aang and Yangchan are the ‘shortest’ airbenders
Salai has a fear of heights but didn’t know about it until he went to the Northern Air Temple for airbending training
Kyoshi had a sister but when they became orphans she ended dying young
At some point Kuruk learned how to knit and crochet
Kuruk made a crochet sweater for her mom when she first started crocheting
Kuruk also made Ummi a knitted sweater that paw made pupself
Korra is in a queerplatonic relationship with Mako
Salai and Szeto are some of the few avatars that got a job outside of being the avatar
Modern AU Aang plays Animal Crossing New Horizons and Minecraft
Modern AU Yangchan plays Pokemon and most Mario games
Szeto knows how to make flowers out of fire
After seeing Tonraq make ice flowers for ver Senna, Korra almost immediately asked Tonraq to teach her so she could them for pup’s friends
Modern AU Korra likes racing games
Roku often gives Ta Min flowers once a week
Kyoshi can’t cook
Ae once burnt down nearly the entire house trying to cook for Rangi cause it was her birthday and ae didn’t want her to cook for herself
They ended up ordering takeout
Kuruk knows how braid hair
Mainly cause e has long hair of her own but also cause she’s the oldest of 7 kids, 5 of which are girls
On the other end of spectrum, Roku is the youngest child
Kit had 6 older sisters and 2 older brothers
Compared to Kit’a siblings, Roku was definitely the shyest and the most quiet one, even in adulthood
Aang was an absolute sweetheart when fae was a toddler, just like how he was a sweetheart in bun’s adulthood
Toddler Aang often made Gyatso pictures, usually of him but sometimes of them playing together
The reason why Korra disliked Asami at first was cause she had a crush on her and didn’t know how to deal with it so she made herself dislike her
Roku was also a sweetheart when kit was a baby!!
Roku often gave her flowers, made her drawings, made her flower crowns (with the help of his father), etc
Yangchan and Kyoshi were pretty chill babies, not much to say here
Wan’s parents died when xe was really young so pup doesn’t know much about them
Salai strongly dislikes tea, the other avatars are baffled by this
Except Korra, she doesn’t like tea either
Kinda goes with my Apartment Complex AU but, Modern AU Roku met Kuruk at the library he works at
Kuruk was there cause paw was trying to find books about mythology cause e were slowly becoming more interested in pup’s old interests again
Ended up working there as Roku’s assistant
these is all i have for now, i hope you enjoyed this wall of text

What I hope to see from Avatar Studios
So the last couple days have been fun - I started rewatching ATLA (for like the third time in the last six months), got a new Avatar graphic novel omnibus in the mail, and learned about Nickelodeon's plan to launch ‘Avatar Studios’ to produce EVEN MORE Avatar content in the future! Since all this is so fresh in my mind I wanted to just talk about some of the things I hope to see from the franchise going forward.
Things I hope stay the same:
Attention to world-building and continuity: Obviously this tends to be one of fans’ favorite parts of this franchise. I hope that whatever comes out in the future will maintain and build on what’s been so painstakingly built up by entries up to now.
Encouraging the audience’s imagination: On the other hand, I’m not looking for them to address every little detail that has been left unexplained. In my opinion one of the best parts of the original series is how well it was able to set up its world and characters to inspire audiences’ imaginations and then provide opportunities to apply that imagination.
Introducing its audience to diverse ideas/themes: The original ATLA series came out around 15 years ago, and even though obviously people who see it for the first time in recent years still enjoy it, I think that maybe they miss some of what attracted so many people to the series when it first came out. For me and many people my age, ATLA served as an introduction to a lot of ideas/themes from Asian cultures that seem much more widely-known in the U.S. today, including anime, meditation, martial arts, philosophy, etc. I hope that they will take this opportunity to continue to innovate in this area.
Complex characters and moral themes: In the original series Zuko is the character that to most people stands out as having the most compelling character arc, and that’s largely due to his moral complexity. I hope that they will continue to pursue this idea, without feeling the need to try and “recreate” another Zuko.
Things I hope change:
Representation: When ATLA came out it was praised for its representation of women, elderly people, and people with disabilities, which I think is well-deserved. As additional entries have been released we’ve also been getting more and better representation of gay/lesbian/bisexual people, and I hope that trend continues. However, there has been scrutiny over the show’s representation of people of color - there’s technically a lot of it but it isn’t always “good” or well thought-out. Additionally, at this point the lack of gender identity diversity is frankly unacceptable (we deserve a trans Avatar).
Cultural appropriation: My biggest criticism of the Avatar franchise up to this point is its tendency to liberally borrow from Asian, Native American, and other cultures without committing to telling stories or creating media that empower people from those cultures. This has to do with on-screen representation as well as “representation” in the people who are making the show. From what I’ve read there has always been some diversity in the team behind the show, and I get the impression that it’s moving in the right direction, but I hope they will take this opportunity to fully and explicitly commit.
Specific topics/ideas I’d like to see:
More intimate look at Air Nomad society: Most existing stories in the Avatar universe take place after the Air Nomads were wiped out. In the Kyoshi novels the little time spent at the Air Temples is from the POV of an outsider. Most of what we hear about Air Nomad society and culture comes from a) a literal 12 year old child or b) outsiders. This and the fact that Air Nomad society is characterized by “purity” makes me think there’s got to be a “dark side” to it. For example: it’s known that “all Air Nomads are airbenders” but I have to wonder if that’s because every child that’s born to Air Nomad parents has airbending abilities or if its because only people who happen to have airbending abilities are able/allowed to be considered “Air Nomads”. In the real world “purity” often comes at the price of exclusion. I’d like to understand why Kyoshi’s mother was so willing to leave a so seemingly-perfect society, beyond the fact that she fell in love with some dude.
Water Tribe development: With the above, it seems like the Water Tribe serves (or could serve) as an interesting foil to the Air Nomads - both societies rely heavily on bending for their everyday way of life, but while 100% of Air Nomads are airbenders, presumably the Water Tribe follows the given “standard” of only 10% of the population being waterbenders. That dynamic in and of itself is fascinating to me - in ATLA in fact we see that the top leaders of the Water Tribe are non-benders (an interesting contrast to the politics we see later in Republic City in LOK). I haven’t read the graphic novels that deal with the Water Tribe, so maybe it comes up there. Something else that I might just not be familiar with there is the long-term history of the society: How did they end up moving from their original Lion Turtle to the North Pole? Where did the Swampbenders come from? One aspect of the original series that receives a lot of (well-deserved in my opinion) criticism is the fact that the (Northern) Water Tribe is shown to be significantly more misogynist than the other nations. This was re-confirmed in the Kyoshi novels. I hope that they either abandon this idea, or if they’re bound to it for some reason, maybe use it to illustrate how these ideas develop and how they can be dismantled (usually it isn’t enough for one girl to beat one guy in hand-to-hand combat). If we look at the “ancient” Water Tribe society, maybe misogyny is absent. Maybe the same circumstances related to them ending up at the North Pole are related to the introduction of these oppressive ideas. Also, there have presumably been female Avatars from all nations who have mastered all four elements - where did they learn waterbending?
Focus on non-Avatar characters: The Avatar sort of functions as a walking deus ex machina due to the Avatar State pretty much always being available if it’s really, truly needed. Even just being the Avatar provides the character with material and social benefits with both humans and spirits. Part of what makes the series great is that it is able to maintain stakes by developing really strong relationships between characters: Aang has the Avatar State to rely on, but not Katara, Sokka, Toph, or Appa. In the Kyoshi novels this idea is even more explicit with Kyoshi and Rangi. I love this dynamic and I hope and expect it to continue, but I think there are other options worth exploring as well. For example, what if the Avatar was an obstacle to the protagonist?

Here are some more Fire Foursome headcanons if you like. And if you think they are good enough can you please leave a comment under my Fire Foursome AO3 page while also putting them on your AOE Fire Foursome page? Thanks!
KEY POINT: The headcanons in this assume an Azula who has gotten the help she has needed, make amends with everyone, and rekindled her friendship with her old friends and Zuko before Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee initiated Azula into their "arrangement."
Q: Which member of the fire foursome is the most likely to be a pain slut?
Answer: Mai; for she is a thrill seeker and she loves nothing more than finding things that make her feel alive. And nothing does that better than driving her lovers so mad with lust that they lose control and hurt her. She loves it when Zuko is taking her from behind and starts pounding her like she is his inanimate fuck doll. She loves it when Ty Lee picks her up, pushes her against a wall, and forcibly grinds their pussies together. And she loves it when Azula is tired of Mai’s edge play and flips Mai on her back, jerks Mai’s legs behind her head, and starts tribbing. However, by hurt she means just bumps and bruises that quickly heal and don’t affect her the next day and not actual injuries. For there are few things that Mai, and really all of The Foursome, hate than being bed ridden and out of commission. And to the rest of the Foursome’s credit, they haven’t hurt Mai despite Mai sometimes losing control and asking them to really hurt her. Not that they would ever hurt, or anyone in the group, ever (again).
Q: Who would like being choked the most, if at all, in the foursome?
General Answer: Tie between Azula and Mai.
Answer (Mai): For the reasons stated in the above question.
Answer (Azula): Azula is a dominant woman in her professional and personal life and likes it when her lovers have had enough of her brattiness and put her in her place. For even if Azula has changed a lot, she is still a brat at times, though the other members of the Fire Foursome find it cute and endearing since Azula isn’t over possessive, domineering, or manipulative like she was when she was younger. That and they realize that for all the airs that Azula puts on, Azula is a socially incompetent fuck up (though with much better emotional stability and maturity) without that much life experience and so they cut her some slack. Also, it is one of the few times Azula can “sit back” and not have to think. Besides, even if they said they have forgiven her, Azula isn’t too sure and so likes to give them an outlet whenever they are frustrated with her, or in general, rather than letting their frustrations build up and have it end in them abandoning leaving her again due to her abusive treatment of them and being an evil jackass in general. This is because Azula isn’t so sure she could survive that again, especially since they have become a lot closer than they were as kids. However, the rest of The Foursome remind Azula that as long as Azula remains a good person, a good partner, and continues her treatments, they’ll never leave her again. Not to mention, as they often point out, Azula works hard in order to not relapse so Azula has nothing to worry about.
Q: Who in the Fire Foursome likes hair pulling?
Answer: All of them. They like having their hair pulled when they are being taken from behind and the giver is asserting their dominance. They like having their hair pulled when they fucking each other face to face and the reciever wants the giver up close when either of them are close to orgamsing in order to heighten the emotional connection. They love it when they are engaging in oral sex and either the receiver, or someone who isn’t involved, violently grabs their hair in attempt to make them tongue their wetness completely or in Zuko’s case, completely throat his cock. They love it when, at the end of a lovemaking session, they get affectionate pats or rubs on the head. For The Fire Nation, and the Fire Nation nobility/royalty, always had a big emphasis on the importance of hair and how it represents your status and honor. And so every time they mess with each other’s hair, it is like they are giving a fuck you to the culture standards that led to their fucked up upbringings. That and the fact that they all have nice, soft, and long hair that is nice to touch or hold. In fact, one of the ways they bond with each other outside of the bedroom is brushing and washing each other’s hair before helping each other put it into their preferred hair style.
Q: Which girl is the most likely to go out of her way to learn a new sex act / improve at it to place the other members of the harem?
Answer: Could the correct answer be anyone other than Azula? Just like she has an analytical, eclectic approach to bending, combat, and statecraft, she has similar views in regards to the bedroom. And to make things worse, Azula is acutely aware that she has no prior romantic or sexual experience compared to her brother (who had a date with Jin, dated Mai on and off since they were teens, and has been with Ty Lee for a while), Mai (been with Zuko on and off since they were teens, dated Kei Lo, and been with Ty Lee for a while), and Ty Lee (who has experience from her time in the circus and The Kyoshi Warriors and has been with Mai and Zuko for a while). She knows that they don’t hold her lack of experience against her and have even told her that they find it hot since they get to mold her to their liking. But Azula can’t help but feel inadequate, especially when there is a nagging voice that sounds awfully like her father telling her that fit, attractive women with pale skin, dark hair, and golden eyes are a dime a dozen in the Fire Nation and once the rest of the Fire Foursome has had their fill of her they will discard her. Especially since they easily can find women like her without the complicated past she shares with them or mental illness(es) she has. Thus Azula scoures for the latest sex scrolls and constantly asks her bro and friends for pointers that they happily give her. However, thanks to her therapy, instead of turning her desire to be the best into a misguided attempt to secure their loyalty for all of time and/or into a (ugly) competition, she returns the help she is given and constantly gives her bro and friends summaries of the scrolls she reads in the form of bi-weekly black ribbon letters. And the result? An massive improvement in Zuko’s, Mai’s, and Ty Lee’s sex life and probably the best sex life in the five nations in the Four Foursome’s no so humble opinions.
Q: What would the girls do if the other two were too pregnant to have sex and they had to try to satisfy Zuko by themself? Maybe with the others watching them?
They would wish the non-pregnant girl good luck in trying to keep with Zuko’s insatiable sex drive before going on with their day. For even if they are heavily pregnant, it is not like they aren’t still active. For Mai is Zuko’s head advisor alongside Azula, Ty Lee is head of the palace guards (whether it be the Fire Nation branch of The Kyoshi Warriors or The Rangi Warriors depends on the verse, and Azula, in addition to advisory duties, is the head of the (official or unofficial depending on the verse) spy network made up of the former Fire Warriors. And if they are truly too pregrant to do anything, it is not like they are going to watch sex that they can’t particpate in. Not when they can be lounging in their well earned luxury while complaining to each other about the state Zuko put them in and their plans to raise their children together (or to continue to do so depending on the timeline/verse).
Q: Who is the best at riding cock, riding a strap-on, or tribbing on top?
Answer: Ty Lee. Girl is supremely talented when it comes to all physical matters and this extends to the bedroom thanks to her nigh unbeatable blend of strength, flexibility, and enthusiasm. Hence one of the reasons why a lot of Zuko’s, Mai’s, and Azula’s favorite sex positions with Ty Lee involve Ty Lee onto top of them and seeing her muscular body go to work pleasuring them while often foddling and/or sucking on her big, fat tits. And Ty Lee loves how being on top basically makes the other members of The Foursome basically worship her like the Sun Warriors worship Ran and Shaw. For even if Ty Lee is not as insecure as a kid/teen and thus doesn’t need or desire (constant) attention, she still likes it when she is the center of attention.
Q: How do the girls react to Zuko's dick being huge and/or a little too big for them?
Answer (Mai): Outwardly complaining that Zuko having a big dick has always made him cocky in the bedroom, while internally being jubilant. This is because Mai is a bit of a size queen, not that she likes admitting to anyone though the rest of the foursome quickly realized it and have lovingly teased her for it. In fact, this is one of the many reasons why she kept coming back to Zuko and eventually made it work with him. For while Mai has had one other male romantic partner, Kei Lo, part of the reason why she didn’t click with him, despite Kei Lo being a way better romantic partner on paper, is because Kei Lo is a bit lacking down there compared to his highness.
Answer (Ty Lee): Enthusiastic and grateful that her male partner is able to satisfy her the way she wants to be. This is because during her time in the circus, all of her male partners were lacking and thus she really didn’t get enjoyment from PiV. Well that and because the men were selfish fucks who didn’t care to pleasure their female partners if it wasn’t through PiV and even if they wanted to, they really didn’t know how to do so. In fact, it was this problem that caused her to experiment with women and led her to believe that she was a lesbian before Mai introduced her to Zuko, whose big dick in addition to actually knowing and caring to please his female partners made Ty Lee realize that she was a bisexual and that there was pleasure to be had fucking men as well.
Answer (Azula): It turns out that her Zuzu is a little too big for her...not that she didn’t notice at first. For the first couple of times she fucked Zuko as part of The Foursome, she was way too happy and horny to notice that Zuko was causing her some pain while doing PiV. But after a while, she started to notice that PiV was a little bit displeasurable from her end but didn’t complain considering how hard she had worked to regain her friends’ and bro’s trust and didn’t want them to think she was a burden. However, Mai and Ty Lee noticed and staged an intervention with Zuko where they asked if Zuko was a little too big for her. Azula wanted to deny it since she had been trained not to admit to “weakness.” But thanks to her therapy and personal growth, Azula pushed aside her prior conditioning and told her fellow lovers the truth while apologizing for keeping a secret and being “too weak to fully take Zuzu.” However, instead of getting upset at her, they laughed and told her that it was nothing to be ashamed about and they understood why Azula was reluctant to come forth. This is because they knew that Azula was very sexual inexperienced, that she probably had aniexty related to sex (espeically with them considering their past), and Fire Nation sex-ed was very lacking outside of the basics and contraceptive use. So Ty Lee and Mai introduced Azula to some Kegel exercises to help her relax her vaginal walls (in contrast to them using the exercise to help better clasp Zuko’s cock) and after a week or so of doing them, Azula was able to take in her (really) big bro without any displeasure and truly enjoy Zuko’s cock much to the other members’ amusement. This is because the first time Azula could take Zuko's cock without resistance, Azula had an immodest orgasm that left the normally sure-footed Azula stunned in silence for a minute straight.
Q: Which members of the fire foursome like to be tied up and/or blindfolded and how? Which members prefer to tie up others?
General Answer: Tied up and blindfolded: Azula and Ty Lee. Tie up and blindfold others: Zuko and Mai.
Answer (Ty Lee): Ty Lee is arguably the physically strongest person she knows, with only Zuko surpassing her for sure. Thus, she loves being tied up by Zuko and being “taken advantage of'' by him since no one else can really overpower her and make her feel truly like she is dominated. And she likes being blindfolded by all of her partners since her extrasensory visual abilities are taxing at times, and so she likes to be able to relax and truly enjoy being pleasured by her partners, as well as pleasuring them, without seeing their auras as well.
Answer (Azula): She likes being tied up partially for the reasons stated in Who would like being choked the most, if at all, in the foursome? And partially because she has constantly masterbated to the thought of being tied up and forcibly taken while being pressed up against a wall ever since that muscular and strong snow peasant Sokka accosted her during the Day of Black Sun and gave her an invader kink. Preferably by Zuko, who is wearing traditional Southern Tribe armor in addition to wearing his hair in the South’s traditional style while she is wearing armor similar to the style she wore near the end of the war (Zuko had them decommissioned but once they had become lovers, he had an armor custom built for him and her so they could engage in their various armor related kinks). She also likes being blindfolded because over the course of her therapy, one thing (among others) that she found effective in treating her symptoms was limiting her sensory perception so she could relax once she was in an area, or room, with people she trusted. And even though it took a long time and a lot of struggling, she completely trusts her bro and friends again, and so likes limiting her sensory perception while in the bedroom with them so she can better enjoy being pleasured as well as better pleasure them. However, she doesn't like being restrained like she was in the asylum since it brings up a lot of traumatic memories and is liable to cause an episode. Something that Zuko, and the other girls, found out the hard way for one time when he tried restraining Azula’s arms to her side without realizing what it meant and caused a nasty episode in Azula which stopped the Foursome’s lovemaking session and forced them to comfort Azula throughout the night.
Answer (Zuko): Considering Zuko’s issues related to a lack of control, is it surprising that he would like tying up and/or blindfolding his lovers (with their consent)? Especially considering his history of tying up headstrong girls *cough*Katara*cough? For Zuko loves it when he blindfolds and ties up Ty Lee to his bed post and alternates between pleasuring her with a didlo molded using his cock and his actual cock, until she just reaches her limit. Only to deny her release and tell her she can only cum if she can correctly guess when he is using the dildo and when he is using his cock. And then hearing her struggle to guess until she is a whimpering mess begging for her Lord to relieve which, as her benevolent lord, he does. Zuko loves it when he ties up and blindfolds Azula and forcibly takes her against a wall while they both wear armor and engage in Azula’s invader kink (see Azula’s above answer for details), and eventually taking her womb like he would her “nation” by filling her up with his seed. Zuko tried getting Mai to accept being blindfolded and tied up but after a couple of times where it became obvious that she didn’t get pleasure from the act, he stopped pushing for it since he can’t get off when his partner(s) are obviously not enjoying their lovemaking. And Mai not liking being tied up and/or blindfolded makes sense considering Mai doesn’t like not having agency due to her severe lack of it during their childhood.
Answer (Mai): Mai, similar to Zuko, had a lack of agency earlier in life and likes to make up for it and nowhere does she like to assert dominance and control than in the bedroom. And there aren't that much better ways to do so than by tying up and blindfolding your lovers. For example, Mai loves to blindfold and tie up her girls and have them fuck each other and her at the same time while making sure they are wearing tight as fuck blut plugs that can only be removed once they make the other blindfolded and tied up girl, or Mai, cum. Which is hard to do since Mai is constantly moving them around and fucking them, which makes it hard for the other girls to know who they are fucking, who is close to orgasming, and if someone did cum, who came and who was responsible. This often leads the girls to become overstimulated and, after reaching their limit and thus forsaking their pride, beg their queen (when she is doming Mai makes sure the girls call her queen, especially Azula) to release their bonds and butt plugs. And Mai only listens to them after they beg for a minute or so straight. Mai tried tying up and blindfolding Zuko one time, but it triggered a nasty memory where Zuko remembered when he woke up strapped down to a bed in the palace healers’ room with a blindfold just after his Agni Kai where he wasn’t sure the extent of his wounds...or if he would even live. So Mai never tried blindfolding and/or tying him up again since she would never hurt her Zuko like that on purpose. Especially not when Mai has other ways to dom her high strung boyfriend (or husband depending on the timeline).
Q: Which fire foursome members like non-con the most? (Either on the receiving end or on the giving end)
Answer: None of the fire foursome like non-con at all and is not surprising considering the lack of agency they had for most of their childhoods. A lack of agency that was partially caused by Azula & Zuko some members of The Foursome. And since all the members of The Foursome are acutely aware of this, non-con isn’t really desired by anyone. However, they do have a lot of non-con roleplay fantasies kinks where, with the prior and consistently obtained consent of the person or people being “raped,” the person or people doing the “raping” forcibly has their way with their “victim(s)”. But, they have a strict safeword system where the moment someone utters their shared safeword (“honor”) they stop the scenario and don’t restart until the person or people who stopped enthusiastically gives consent again.
