4½ ud af 5 umulige opgaver

For at være klar til film nummer syv, der kommer til sommer, brugte jeg et par dage på at gense de seks første film. Og jeg var behageligt overrasket. Faktisk mere, end da jeg så dem første gang. Det er (i modsætning til Bond-serien med Craig) velkomponerede historier uden idiotiske plothuller, alle centreret om en eller anden kompliceret mission, som det altid lykkes Ethan Hunt og kompagni at gennemføre på et hængende hår.

1: Brian de Palmas udgave er lidt gammeldags i stilen, men holder stort set stadig. Den umulige opgave her er at stjæle data fra CIA's hovedkvarter i Langley. Vi får den ikoniske scene (tyvstjålet fra "Topkapi") med Tom Cruise hængende i tynde wirer over et trykfølsomt gulv. En scene, der visuelt refereres til i næsten hver eneste af de følgende film. 2: John Wus udgave skæmmes (i hvert fald for mig) af de mange John Wu-manerer, der er mindst lige så irriterende som Guy Ritchies. Jeg hadede den første gang, men synes faktisk nu, at den er okay, især på grund af den purunge og pivlækre Thandie Newton, der giver actionfilmen et romantisk løft. I film #1 går Cruise formentlig i seng med Emmanuelle Béart, men det antydes kun. Her er der ingen tvivl. Ethan får sin Bond-babe, men det er så også sidste gang, man spilder tid på lir i denne serie. Den umulige opgave er at stjæle en dræbende virus fra et svært bevogtet højhus samt at narre overskurken (Dougray Scott) til sidst. Nok den svageste af filmene, men altså nogenlunde okay. 3: I J.J. Abrams' udgave bortføres og fanges den farlige våbenhandler Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman) af Ethans team, men slipper fra dem og hævner sig ved at bortføre Ethans forlovede Julia. Den umulige opgave er bortførelsen af Davian fra Vatikanet ved højlys dag. Og en ekstra mission er at få fat i filmens macguffin (kaldet The Rabbit's Foot) i Shanghai. Alt ender godt (for denne gang). Vi får også omsider et tiltrængt indblik i, hvordan teamet laver de masker (og stemmeforvrængere), de så ofte snyder modstanderne med. 4: I Brad Birds udgave (min personlige favorit) er der flere umulige opgaver: Man skal infiltrere Kreml og bagefter arrangere et kompliceret dobbeltmøde mellem to skurke i verdens højeste bygning i Dubai. Begge gange går alting naturligvis galt. Det hele ender i Indien, hvor man også kommer i kapløb med tiden for at forhindre et atommissil i at ramme San Francisco. Teamet suppleres med en ny fast person, Brandt (spillet af Jeremy Renner). Vi får at vide, at Julia er blevet skilt fra Ethan og er gået under jorden for ikke at kunne blive brugt imod ham igen. 5: Christopher McQuarrie (manden der skrev "The Usual Suspects") overtager instruktørstolen, og dér bliver han siddende i hvert fald de næste fire film. Denne gang er Ethans team oppe mod en hemmelig forbryderorganisation kaldet The Syndicate, ledet af den tidligere MI6-agent Solomon Lane (Sean Harris). Den umulige mission er at kidnappe den engelske premierminister, fordi kun hans stemme kan åbne en krypteret besked. I filmen møder vi også dobbeltagenten Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), som fra nu af bliver seriens leading lady (dog uden at hoppe i kassen med Ethan, i hvert fald ikke endnu).

6: McQuarrie er på igen som instruktør, og nu er der for alvor gået gået serie i serien. Som sagt er Ilsa med igen, og Julia dukker også op med ny ægtemand, så vejen formentlig er banet for et mere romantisk forhold mellem Ethan og Ilsa i næste film. Vi får se. Også Sean Harris er tilbage, og denne gang har han fået fingre i to atombomber, som er teknisk forbundet, så ingen af dem kan neutraliseres uden at aktivere den anden. I et vanvittigt kapløb med tiden lykkes det alligevel Ethans team at knække nødden. Spillets joker er Henry Cavill som CIA-agent.

Man kan mene om scientologen Tom Cruise, hvad man vil, men han er perfekt i rollen som Ethan Hunt, hvor han også selv laver mange halsbrækkende stunts. Især starten på 5'eren, hvor han hænger på siden af et fly, er imponerende. Jeg ser frem til den næste film, som kun er første del af to. Den eneste anden person, som har været med i alle filmene, er Ving Rhames som Luther. Faste teammedlemmer (nu) er også Simon Pegg som Benji og Rebecca Ferguson som Ilsa. Renner er tilsyneladende ikke med længere.

Boy, your servant said there was a letter waiting for me here. WOH, Episode 26 ZZS, ZCL and WKX left the mansion and went to the city, to Ping'An Silver Manor, to collect the letter from YBY. ZZS claims that he came for the letters, and the man who received them closes the Ping'An Silver Manor and takes the three of them to an elegant room. ZZS and WKX are sitting on chairs, and ZCL is standing next to them and looking around. After a while, another person appears, a young man who greets Commander Zhou. ZZS gets up and asks what Ping An is doing here in Kun and if he is the host of this manor. Ping An replies that he has no such qualifications and asks ZZS to sit down. ZZS sits down. And Ping An replies that he oversees several smaller residences belonging to Prince Qi. He adds that there are four or five branches in Nanjiang that Ru Yi supervises. ZZS is surprised by what he has learned. He says that Ping'An's Silver Manors are scattered all over the world and he never imagined that they were owned by Prince Qi. ZZS wonders how someone like Prince Qi can make money. Ping An argues that the ZZS is wrong, explaining that although their court conducts financial operations, their main goal is to collect information about the Central Plains for Da Wu. He adds that they use mechanical birds that he creates thanks to ZZS teachings. Thanks to this, Ping An learned that Prince Qi was on his way to Kun even before his arrival. ZZS is surprised and asks if it is true that the prince is coming to Kun. Ping An responds by addressing ZZS as Commander Zhou, saying that ZZS himself sent Mr. Ye to Da Wu. The silent WKX listens with interest to ZZS's conversation with PA. ZZS is also trying to sort out everything he has heard now. ZZS did not expect that when he received a letter from YBY, he would have to face the past again. ZZS did not expect that Ping’An Silver Manors would belong to his former friend, Prince Qi. ZZS broke off all contacts with him because he did not want to expose him to danger, he knew that Prince Jin wanted Prince Qi dead. Perhaps, listening to AP, he felt remorse for treating his former friend this way, who as soon as he found out that ZZS was sick, rushed to help him. Perhaps ZZS remembers what happened to JX when he went to help ZZS who was supposed to be in prison. He doesn't want Prince Qi to suffer a similar fate. WKX, listening to the conversation between ZZS and PA, is intrigued by who ZZS's unknown friends are, who without hesitation want to come to heal ZZS. Maybe he's even a little jealous that someone else wants to take care of ZZS. ZZH's subtle and delicate performance as the quiet and intrigued character of ZZS and WKX GJ are the best parts of this scene. I love the innocent looks and look of surprise on ZZH's face as he listens to this story. There is so much gentleness and lightness in him that you want to comfort him.

Heroes (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on bilibili) Adapted from the novel "Shuo Ying Xiong Shei Shi Ying Xiong" (说英雄谁是英雄) by Wen Rui An (温瑞安) starring Zeng ShunXi, Yang ChaoYue, Liu YuNing, Baron Chen and Meng ZiYi. I would’ve watched this thing for the cast only. Everyone is queer vibes. Not a flashy drama, but will emotionally shred you. The character development is totally worth it. Throughly entertaining, even when it punched you in the gut. 8/10

The Wind Blows From LongXi (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from novel "The Wind Rises in Longxi" (风起陇西) by Ma Bo Yong (马伯庸) starring Chen Kun and Bai Yu. I’ve been waiting for this drama for two years and it was worth every second of the wait. The cinematography in this thing is bonkers. The use of light and shadows, the muted colors, the indoor shots opening up into well-lit courtyards, the gritty sound mixing, the whole thing just blew my ass away. Chen Kun and Bai Yu are masters of their art. Fckn masterpiece. 11/10

Who Rules The World (watch on WeTV VIP | watch on Netflix) Adapted from the novel "Qie Shi Tian Xia" (且试天下) by Qing Ling Yue (倾泠月) starring Yang Yang, Zhao LuSi, and Xuan Lu. One of the rare romance dramas that really appealed to me. A well-balanced mix of court intrigue and martial world heroics. Unlimited blorbo potential. It’s hard to outshine Yang Yang (who gives major Mei Changsu vibes through like the first third of the drama) but Zhao LuSi and Xuan Lu together? Magnificent. Breathtaking. Brilliant. 8/10

The Legend of Hao Lan (watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki | watch on tubi) starring Wu Jinyan and Nie Yuan. So this was like, The Story of Yanxi Palace cast, remixed. Was it great? Not really. Did I watch every episode? Yeah. I honestly think that Wu Jinyan could just make faces for 50+ sixty minute episodes, and I’d still watch every minute of it. Still, a fascinating take on the Warring States Period, and actually based on a woman who helped her son become the King of Qin, then ultimately the First Emperor of China. I think 99% of the budget went to costumes, and tbh, it was totally worth every penny. 7/10

(yeah, after all this, I rewatched Nirvana In Fire again)

The Silent Criminal (watch on Apple TV | watch on Bilibili | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) starring Li Jiaming and Wen Sheng. So incredibly gay. Hilarious, yes, but predominantly gay. Murder, intrigue, suspense, pining; this little drama literally has everything. Did it impact my life and leave a long-lasting impression? Not really. But I was most throughly entertained. 7/10

My Heroic Husband (watch on Amazon Prime | watch on iQIYI VIP | watch on Viki) Adapted from the novel "Zhui Xu" (赘婿) by Fen Nu de Xiang Jiao (愤怒的香蕉). Starring Song Yi and Guo Qilin. Actually, the majority of Joy of Life cast is in this drama, including a cameo by Zhang Ruoyun in the very beginning. Cast aside tho, I fckn love this drama to pieces. Song Yi and Guo Qilin have amazing chemistry, and they’re so goddamn adorable together I can’t even stand it. The plot is far from complex but immensely satisfying. Excellent drama on a mediocre budget, one I plan to regularly rewatch. 8/10

颱風眼 Eye of the Hurricane by 潭石 Tan Shi: Tan Shi's best novel, imo -- well-written, well-plotted, well-rounded characters. The melodrama is reasonable, and I can never get enough of the "mend the broken mirror" trope. They switch. That gets extra points.

貌合神離 Lovers In Name Only by 困倚危樓 Kun Yi Wei Lou: The best in class for melodrama. I don't actually go for melodrama, but this one gave me feelings. It has all the dogblood - kidnapping, amnesia, lovers forced apart (and stay apart), break ups, reunions, your ML is basically the BIG BAD -- it sounds like a terrible combination but KYWL just made it work.

吞海 Swallowing the Seas (Po Yun 2) 淮上 Huai Shang: I'm not a Huai Shang fan, but I think they've finally left the land of "rape = uncontrollable love" behind and started writing things I'm interested in. Both in this series are good, but I especially love the 2nd one for plot. Huai Shang just has this thing with action scenes, they’re just so well done and feel like watching a movie. (alas for the fade to black though)

長相守 Til Death Do Us Part by 魚香肉絲 Tangstory: I've talked about this one before; it’s one of the few books that's ever made me cry droplets of tears. (And it's HE ... dying of OLD AGE is HE ...) 

譚先生的譚先生 Mr. Tan's Mr. Tan by 五六狸 Wu Liu Li: actually pretty typical tyrant-president x innocent and perfect shou, love at first sight, marriage and divorce, a whole pile of melodrama (amnesia included) with massive # of misunderstandings, but it gave me so many feelings. The MC used to be a radio host on one of those chicken soup storytelling shows so of course there’s an audio drama.
