Downsizing or Blame Women For All Your Shortcomings
It's been a day and a half since I saw Downsizing and I’m still not sure what I think about it. The problem was mostly a tonal one, which was partly the fault of the trailer for advertising it as a whimsical comedy, when I’m not sure if Downsizing wants me to be moved by the good that people are capable of or gloomily contemplate the downfall of humanity, or just laugh at a few dick and butt jokes. The messages from the women in this film are just as mixed.
*Downsizing spoilers follow*
Most of the women in Downsizing fall into the reductive and derogatory category of “look at all these women who let Paul (Matt Damon) down even though he’s such a nice guy.” The first woman to be guilty of such a crime is Paul’s unnamed mother (Jayne Houdyshell) who does nothing but complain, and Paul later goes on to imply that the reason he never rose to meteoric heights as a surgeon is that he had to put his own life on hold to care for her in her illness. She promptly dies off screen and is replaced by Paul’s wife, Audrey (Kristen Wiig), who is in the same room of the same house still bemoaning her own pain, whilst Paul does what he can to care for her. Audrey also disappoints Paul by failing to downsize with him, therefore robbing him of his life of luxury, forcing him to live in a humble apartment rather than a mansion and hold down a job in a call centre. She is shown to be greedy and materialistic - she’s the one who wants the big house, Paul just wants to make her happy, and she appears to force a better deal out of the divorce settlement. Furthermore, her decision making is irrational, vain and selfish; it’s having her head shaved that triggers her decision not to downsize and she’s constantly wailing about how everything affects her, showing little consideration for how Paul feels. Therefore, both Paul’s wife and mother seem to merge into one female proxy that symbolises how women keep taking the things he deserves away from him - his career, dream house and life of leisure are all kept from him by these women.
Once he is small, women continue to let Paul down. He attempts to start dating again, and meets single Kristen (Kerri Kenney), a single mother also coping with some of the unforeseen problems of downsizing - such as her son being afraid of his enormous grandparents. Paul willingly subverts her saying that it’s too soon for him to meet her son into Kristen dumping him and storms off, leaving her calling after him in the corridor; in his mind, once again abandoned by a woman. Even when he tries to blow off some steam at a party, Paul is ïżœïżœïżœdeceived” by an anonymous woman who offers him drugs, which Paul appears to believe is some sort of unspoken contract for a sexual encounter, but once he has taken the pill she returns to the party, leaving Paul alone and hard done by again.
The only female character with any substance is Ngoc Lan Tran (Hong Chan), a Vietnamese activist who was downsized against her will in a prison which killed her sister before becoming the only survivor of a perilous crossing to America in a television box which cost her one of her legs. Her backstory alone immediately makes her a much more interesting character than Paul, whose only real problem is that he is divorced and not quite as rich as he would like to be. Additionally, she has a personality, which is more than can be said for Paul. Instead of a meek and mild mannered martyr, she is fiery, direct, honest and pragmatic, showing her care for others through useful actions. She is at the utter bottom of the socio-economic chain of the supposedly idyllic Leisureland community, but she never laments her situation, she just does what she can to make it better for those around her, caring for the sick and collecting food for the rest of her community.
Paul is also shown to be a good person, he constantly tends to the injuries of those around him, but these gestures almost seem superimposed onto the film, a big, flashy sign that says, “look at poor Paul, he’s such a nice guy.” If these instances were removed from Downsizing, he’s just a man constantly believing that he’s been short-changed by life, chasing the idea that he deserves better and is meant to be part of something bigger. He also seems to feel the need to bring women with him on these ventures, first (unsuccessfully) talking Audrey into downsizing with him, then attempting to bring Ngoc Lan into a doomsday cult vault with him where they would spend the rest of their lives. Their two responses to this situation sum up the differences in their characters perfectly - Paul wants to go because he believes he is intrinsically important and destined to become a part of something monumental, whereas Ngoc Lan chooses to stay because she knows for a fact that she can still do good to actually help people out in the real world.
The romance between these two characters is completely inexplicable; it comes out of nowhere, neither of them seem to have actually had feelings for each other up to that point, and appears to only serve to give Paul a reason to come out of the vault and back to reality at the end. Friendship and the value of the common sense in Ngoc Lan’s advice to stay and deliver pragmatic aid to people in need could have been enough, but apparently sex had to be the main motivator.
There are a few other named female characters, and women are very present in the background as nurses, administrators, real estate agents and sales representatives. One of the latter is Laura Lonowski (Laura Dern) who we briefly meet in a bath trying to convince people to downsize because they can have lots of diamonds, just like her. Anne-Helene AsbjĂžrnsen (Ingjerd Egeberg) makes several short appearances as the wife of Dr. JĂžrgen AsbjĂžrnsen (Rolf LassgĂ„rd), the scientist who made downsizing possible. In some respects she is a pioneer, as one of the first people ever to downsize, but she is mostly portrayed as a devoted wife, supporting JĂžrgen in all of his decisions and endeavours, even if they involve starting a doomsday cult. Finally, there is Solveig Edvardsen (Margareta Peterson), a fellow believer in the apocalypse, who seems to exist to emphasise the fanaticism of the Norwegian colony, with her eccentric behaviour and appearance, as well as making Paul (and presumably, the intended audience) uncomfortable with the sexuality of a comfortable older woman, as her talking about mountain Paul as a pony in her dream is one of the moments that Downsizing seems to be reminding us that it’s maybe a comedy.
Overall, the women in Downsizing are mostly used as the root cause of all the shortcomings in the life of one fairly uncharismatic and uninteresting man. Thankfully, Ngoc Lan rises above this as a human being with an actual personality and sense of purpose. She overcomes so much adversity and remains positive without becoming a sappy stereotype of a do-gooder. It’s just a shame to see such a unique female character suffer a fate as old as cinema itself, falling into an unfathomable romance with the main white man, when friendship could have been just as poignant.
And now for some asides:
I really enjoyed how many satisfying levers, dials and switches there were in this film, the fidgeter in me wanted to play with them all.
Umm, excuse me, why was there such an extended colonic irrigation scene? Can we please never do that again?
I think if I was supposed to be sickened by anything in this film it was humanity (maybe?) but really it was the proliferation of McMansions. My eyes!

Agnez Mo, Pencitraan Yang Terluka
Tumblr media
Enak saja. Bossnya sudah dikasih jabatan penting, masih enak-enakan jadi penonton. Begitu kali ye? Tau ah, gelap. 27 Nopember 2019 -Balya Nur Read the full article

Your Tuesday Morning Roundup
The Eagles were supposed to celebrate their Super Bowl championship with the President in Washington, D.C. this afternoon.
Now they’re not. In fact, they’re not invited at all. But the fans somehow still are, which I don’t get. Less than 10 players were reportedly going to visit the White House. The President will still have a celebration at 3 PM, except it’ll celebrate the National Anthem.
There’s been plenty of reaction to the decision, beginning with former Eagle Torrey Smith:
So many lies smh Here are some facts 1. Not many people were going to go 2. No one refused to go simply because Trump “insists” folks stand for the anthem 3. The President continues to spread the false narrative that players are anti military pic.twitter.com/89GUNhJ4eE
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) June 4, 2018
There are a lot of people on the team that have plenty of different views. The men and women that wanted to go should’ve been able to go. It’s a cowardly act to cancel the celebration because the majority of the people don’t want to see you. To make it about the anthem is foolish
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) June 4, 2018
Philadelphia Eagles wise receiver Torrey Smith said in February that most of his teammates wouldn’t go to the White House. Here was his reason. Sounds about right. pic.twitter.com/12vyVBn1LB
— Dave Zirin (@EdgeofSports) June 5, 2018
Make sure you know the words, stand tall, and aren’t twiddling your fingers around like a kid that can’t wait for it to end. https://t.co/44KLnTkP1B
— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) June 5, 2018
A big counterargument that occurred on Twitter was people posting pictures of Ron Brooks taking a knee. He did that during the preseason, not during the regular season or the playoffs.
If you are going to tweet
tweet facts
no one on the Eagles took a knee last season

— Torrey Smith (@TorreySmithWR) June 5, 2018
Mayor Jim Kenney released a straightforward statement condemning the decision:
Philly mayor Jim Kenney's statement is pointed.
After President Trump disinvited the #Eagles to the White House, Kenney calls him "a fragile egomaniac obsessed with crowd size and afraid of the embarrassment of throwing a party to which no one wants to attend." pic.twitter.com/90pHhIR4SU
— Dave Zangaro (@DZangaroNBCS) June 5, 2018
Reggie Bush and Josh Norman also chimed in:
Let me get this straight so YALL President saw that a few players from the Eagles wasn’t showing up tomorrow so he got sensitive and and cancelled the whole trip?
Tumblr media
Man get this bum out of here! Correct me if I’m wrong didn’t Eagles players stand for the anthem all year?
Tumblr media
— Reggie Bush (@ReggieBush) June 5, 2018
Why is this impeachment taking so Damn Long
Tumblr media
— *Joshua R. Norman (@J_No24) June 5, 2018
The Eagles released their statement late last night, and it was perfect:
pic.twitter.com/2HUoFhVc33
— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) June 5, 2018
Just this morning, Zach Ertz criticized a Fox News story which featured Eagles players taking a knee while PRAYING:
This can’t be serious
. Praying before games with my teammates, well before the anthem, is being used for your propaganda?! Just sad, I feel like you guys should have to be better than this
 https://t.co/kYeyH2zXdK
— Zach Ertz (@ZERTZ_86) June 5, 2018
The players will probably talk about this on Wednesday when there’s media availability after OTAs.
So what will the team do today? They’ll have an OTA session.
It’d be better if we talk about things like Mychal Kendricks getting in a hissy fit about reports that he was signing with the Browns, But hey, at least the Eagles won the Super Bowl!
The Roundup:
Back to non-political sports news, specifically Bryan Colangelo. We have a collar-themed game, and the billboards have begun:
We've reached the billboard chapter in the Colangelo Burner Account saga. pic.twitter.com/pxwHbKNPA3
— Kristen Rodgers (@KristenERodgers) June 4, 2018
Also, we got soe new nuggets from Woj. We now know the name of the law firm the team is using in their investigation, and Colangelo and his wife will be interviewed separately, with an end hopefully soon.
Woj on Sportscenter: "Both Colangelo and his wife will be interviewed separately in this probe."
"The Sixers want to get a resolution sooner than later."
— Matt Carey (@RealMattCarey) June 4, 2018
The team did replace Lloyd Pierce with former Pelicans head coach Monty Williams to become their new lead assistant.
Who knows how long the Colangelo saga lasts, but they’ll have to start looking at draft prospects soon.
Finally, the latest 2019 NBA championship odds have the Sixers really high up. Is it because LeBron’s coming to Philly?
With the Phillies on their off day, the team took Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm with the third overall pick in last night’s MLB Draft.
The team thinks Bohm can get through the farm system quickly:
This season, in 224 at-bats over 57 games, the rangy Bohm hit .339, with 16 home runs and 14 doubles. He’s shown great plate discipline, striking out 28 times while walking 39 times. That’s the type of plate discipline the current Phillies could use, considering that they’re fourth in the majors in strikeouts (552) behind league-leading Texas (603).
“We loved the bat, we loved the offensive capabilities, so we would have taken him [third overall] regardless whether he felt he could stay there [at third base],” Phillies’ director of amateur scouting Johnny Almaraz said. “But we don’t believe that. We believe he can stay there [at third base].”
What set Bohm apart was his performance in the Cape Cod Summer League during the summer between his sophomore and junior years at Wichita State. He was named an all-star for the Falmouth (Mass.) Commodores, finishing second in batting average (.351), third in RBI (28), third in doubles (10) and 10th in home runs (5).
More importantly, he struck out just 21 times over 154 at-bats in 39 games. And that played a big role in the Phillies’ decision to use the third pick on Bohm.
Anthony is back to yell about Jake Arrieta and Bryan Colangelo. Get off his lawn.
Kevin won’t be cheering for Mexico in the upcoming World Cup. I won’t either. Why should you?
In other sports news, the Washington Capitals are one game away from winning their first Stanley Cup after beating Vegas 6-2.
Former 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark passed away at the age of 61 after a battle with ALS.
The Detroit Tigers took Auburn RHP Casey Mize with the number one pick in the MLB Draft.
In the news, a Delaware Burger King closed after video showed rodents all over hamburger buns.

The minute that Sarah Corey makes her entrance as Neil Simon’s indomitable matriarch, Kate Jerome, Oldcastle Theatre Company‘s production of Brighton Beach Memoirs you know who’s in charge here. This is Corey’s second Oldcastle turn as Kate, having played an older iteration in Broadway Bound in 2017, and for those of us lucky enough to have seen both productions, it is like coming home. Even if your mother wasn’t Kate, Kate is your mother for the two and a half hours you will spend with her.
Brighton Beach Memoirs is the first in Simon’s trilogy of plays about the Jerome Family. It is September of 1937, and Eugene (D. J. Gleason), our narrator, is 15, while his brother Stanley (Anthony Ingargiola) is 18, just out of high school and into the work force. Their father Jack (Eli Ganias) is a garment cutter for a manufacturer of ladies’ raincoats, who also takes on other odd jobs to support his family in the Great Depression. Their mother Kate is a homemaker, and for the past three years their home has also included Kate’s widowed sister, Blanche Morton (Sophia Garder), and Blanche’s two daughters, Nora (Kate Kenney), 16, and Laurie (Kristen Herink), 13.
The family owns a three bedroom house in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn. They are Polish and Jewish and they worry daily about family back home as Hitler advances through Europe. Everyone scrimps and save and true poverty is always kept just at bay, but at heart the Jeromes are proud that they can manage on what they do have.
All of that managing falls on solidly on Kate’s shoulders. In addition to corralling four teenagers, she is the emotional prop for her depressed sister and the physical shield for her over-stressed and ailing husband.

Corey’s performance is absolutely solid and immediately appealing. She gets this woman, her considerable strengths and her failings. Simon has crafted the character with tremendous love, and Corey channels it beautifully.
Gleason’s Eugene is bursting with the sexual and physical energy with which a boy of that age is possessed, and his antics provide most of the comic relief in what is otherwise quite a sober family drama. I often have a hard time with adults playing children, and I felt that a bit with Herink’s Laurie, but Gleason had me completely convinced that he was still in high school and torn between his love for baseball and ice cream, and his new found frenzy for the female form.
Ingargiola brings a warmth and genuineness to the role. His Stanley is a terrific Big Brother and a loving son, even though he is also just barely an adult and subject to the failings of his age. Ganias’ Jack connects well with the rest of his family – even his sister-in-law – providing a strong father figure even as he struggles to stay healthy enough to fulfill his bread-winning role.
Garder’s face is just a mask of tragedy as the bereaved Blanche, a woman who invested her whole self into her marriage only to be left rudderless at its sudden demise. But like her sister Kate, she is devoted to her children, even though she lacks the strength of her convictions to guide them towards adulthood. I felt Kenney was miscast as Nora. She didn’t look like she could be Garder’s daughter or Herink’s sister, and she looked to mature to pass as 16.
At a time when we are hearing a lot of rhetoric about who is “an American” with various unflattering stereotypes being pinned to different ethnic groups, it is hard to hear Kate’s disgust and anger at the Irish family who lives across the street and their son who hopes to date her sister. Earlier in the 20th century discrimination was strong against both the Irish and the Italian, and to a lesser extent the German, immigrants to New York City. It is interesting that Kate, who understands so clearly what discrimination has done to her ancestors, cannot understand that she is perpetuating an identical violence against another ethnic group.
Richard Howe’s manages to pack an awful lot of distinct rooms into the Oldcastle performance space, creating the cheek-by-jowl intimacy that the two families sharing one home must feel. Stith and his actors are careful to use each doorway at the appropriate time for the appropriate purpose, so you soon catch on to the condensed floorplan of the house. Ursula McCarty’s costumes are good, but they veer heavily towards purple, particularly in the second act, which is puzzling.
Like Tennessee Williams’ A Glass Menagerie, Brighton Beach Memoirs is a memory play, a family seen through the eyes of the son. While it is generally accepted as a semi-autobiographical work, there aren’t actually many direct parallels to Neil Simon’s own family. He said himself that the Jeromes were “the family I wished I’d had instead of the family I did have.” So we can’t look at them as direct representation of the Simons, but it is clear that Simon loved the Jeromes like family. Oldcastle loves them too, and it is wonderful that they have brought them back to Bennington in this strong and proud production,
Brighton Beach Memoirs by Neil Simon, directed by Nathan Stith, runs July 12-28, 2019, at the Oldcastle Theatre Company, 331 Main Street in Bennington, VT. DOWNSIZING Movie Review
#DOWNSIZING is one of the years best and deserves to be seen on the BIG screen. Check out the review!
DOWNSIZING (R)
Released by Paramount Pictures Review by Adam Mast
If Charlie Kaufman were to write a “Twilight Zone” episode, it might look a little something like DOWNSIZING; A film whose central premise, as seemingly genius as it is, could have worn thin very quickly. But director Alexander Payne and screenwriter Jim Taylor (ELECTION and SIDEWAYS) simply refuse to let that happen. This movie
