I'm making this its own post bc @penn-central-official has suffered enough, but I cannot stop thinking about Light Mike(s). The thing is that I don't have the right kind of autism for most railroad history but I do almost have the right kind of autism for art history. The Pennsy took a standard USRA design that seems to have been little-altered by other railroads and said "Hmm no we're customizing this, we might not have built it but damned if it's going to be obvious. You're an L2 now" (or words to that effect)(why though)(is it purely out of maintaining your STANDARD RAILROAD OF THE WORLD image?)(is it cheaper to put the generator on the smokebox? What gives?). It makes me want to do a survey of all the Light Mikes across their respective railroads and examine the material circumstances that would lead to their being customized or not (especially with regards to the 600ish copies of the original design that were built later).
This is part of a larger thought I have occasionally about aesthetics and the steam locomotive - to what degree are they deliberate, and to what degree are they a byproduct of the mechanical design demands and the material circumstances under which the locomotive was built? How much does somebody like Oliver Bullied make stylistic choices vs. engineering ones(is there even a difference with that guy)? Could one identify American locomotives based purely on their "look" when scrubbed of identifying marks (oh hey it's the Pennsy again)? What happens to aesthetics when you really go hard on standardization and build, I don't know, the Chinese QJ class or the Indian Railways WP (to say nothing of the overlaps in political spheres of influence and nasty circumstances making certain types ubiquitous [lookin at you, Kriegslok])(that may not be as much of an aesthetic thing)?

2022-04-13 Loc 33-236 Entre Dobošnica et Miričina Bosnie -JMF 3344 por Jean-Marc Frybourg Por Flickr: Coming from Lukavac, a freight train runs between Dobošnica and Berkovica near the border between Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. The early morning and cold temperature allows for a spectacular display of steam. The steam engine is a class 33 in Yougoslavia, better known as a Kriegslok (war locomotive), of a huge series built during WWII. In 2022, it is still working at the Kreka coal mines near Tuzla.

My OC, in depth :D
(In light of the EXTREMELY warm welcome I received, thanks y’all, I’m going to write up a post describing my oc!) Mikolaj is an express engine from Poland. He was built in 1931, along with two other engines of his class, the Pu29s. They were solid engines, and would rival the Pt31s in tests to see which class to develop and build in mass quantities. The main drawback of the Pu29s was how long they were, too long for most turntables in Poland. Hence, Mikolaj and his two siblings were the only ones built. From the start, Mikolaj was a friendly engine, eager to work. He was and still is a very powerful engine, comparable to a 9f in the tonnage his class are able to pull. He and his siblings happily ran trains in the north of Poland until 1939. Then, of course, WW2 happened. During the occupation, many German steam engines, Kriegsloks especially, flowed into the country. Trying to boost their egos, they would harass and bully Mikolaj, as well as his siblings. Their verbal abuse usually took the form of “body-shaming” as we would call it today, making fun of how oversized Mikolaj was in their eyes, and how he was of no use. This would resonate with Miko going forward, as he developed a deep hatred for teasing later on. Following the end of the war, being the only Pu29 left in Poland, Mikolaj would aide in reconstruction. Although communism was rampant in the country, he would begin to recover as he saw his homeland rise from the ashes. He met many new postwar Polish engines, and became friends with most of them. Even some Polish-built ex-Kriegsloks made amends with him. He felt very happy for the 25 odd years of his career postwar. He would be purchased in 1970 by the NWR. The Fat Controller needed a heavy-duty express/mixed traffic engine, and Mikolaj, being relatively inexpensive due to his relative age, would find himself crossing the English Channel in 1971. After refurbishment and a new midnight blue livery being applied, he began running mainline trains on the NWR in late 1972. Since then, he’s strived to be a good friend to those who wished to approach him in such a manner. Notes:  P designates him as an express engine, u as a 4-8-2, and 29 is the year he was approved for production. His basis, Pu29-3, was retired in 1970, hence why I had him be purchased that year. The Pu29s were 25 meters long, whilst most Polish turntables were only 20 meters long. My pfp of Mikolaj was drawn by @COL46247 on twitter. She’s a talented friend of mine, so I recommend giving her a look! PS: (If you think i should change anything with my oc, perhaps some of his bio, do let me know)

Clagosaurus......... by Stapleton Road A dinosaur from an other era ? No....just another day in the life of Bosnias 2-10-0 ex German Class 52 Kriegslok. No team of volunteers pampering her, not one drop of polish on her brass.....Just the grit and grime of nearly 70 years hard labour. Still performing today in the heart of the Tuzla coalfields but with only weeks left in service. 33248 will imminently be retired from service bringing to a close an amazing chapter in railway history. Seen here performing a shunting manoeuvre at Dubrave coal mine. https://flic.kr/p/2icowPb

Steam at departure por Martien Uiterweerd Por Flickr: Steam locomotive 52 8060-7 of the Museumrailway S.T.A.R. departs from Stadskanaal station in the Netherlands. Since 1995 the Museumrailway S.T.A.R. (Stichting Stadskanaal Rail) exploits the railwayline between Veendam, Stadskanaal en Musselkanaal with historical steamtrains. The 26 km long track follows the border between the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe in the northeast of the Netherlands. The Deutsche Reichsbahn's Class 52 was a German steam locomotive built in large numbers during the Second World War. With over 7,000 locomotives, built across Europe, it was the most produced type of the so-called Kriegslokomotiven or Kriegsloks (war locomotives). 6,000+ locomotives passed into Russian ownership after the Second World War. Other operators of the type included Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Norway and Turkey. The Deutsche Reichsbahn (DRB) in East Germany (DDR) had 200 machines, including 52 8060-7, reconstructed to the new DRB Class 52.80. Stoomlocomotief 52 8060-7 van museumspoorlijn S.T.A.R. vertrekt vanaf station Stadskanaal. Museumspoorlijn S.T.A.R. _____________________ All rights reserved. Speechless por Stapleton Road Por Flickr: When this photo was taken the Bosnian Kriegsloks had months left in service then Covid happened and information about their current situation has dried up. Hopefully they have survived. Here we see 33248 blasting out of the mine complex at Dubrave. On this day she was in steam to carry out shunting duties around the mine. Access was denied but after exchanging a few euros the men that mattered agreed to hook 248 onto a rake of wagons and let her stretch her legs outside the mine.
