Summary: Healing isn’t something that happens overnight. (Or) The first part of 5 + 1 times Trevor hears That Song after escaping as he becomes familiar with the 21st century. Will go up on Ao3 when permitted.

Trevor Hills settled into the 21st century remarkably well - all things considered.

For someone who had spent the last decade doing the exact same thing day in, day out, he took to the ever-changing nature of 2023 with ease.

Of course he wasn’t doing it alone.

Angela had invited him into her home and her life like he was already family. Trevor didn’t kid himself. She had also just lost her job. She was paying for both of them out of her savings while picking a fight with the biggest media conglomerate that had ever existed.

So Trevor got a job.

What was it that Vivian had said? That he had no discernible skills?

Okay, so not entirely inaccurate. He also didn’t have references since his only job had been at a fake company. But apparently that didn’t mean that he wouldn’t ever get employed.

“So, data entry, huh?”

Trevor shrugged from where he was lying on the floor on his stomach. “It’s repetitive. I find that calming.”

Angela had stopped questioning his strange behaviour at this point. It was easier than having him explain the love affair he had with his turtle. Instead she flipped the contract over to get a better look at the fine print. “It doesn’t look sinister to me. Just as you said: a small law firm needing help digitising old cases.”

“That’s what I had hoped.” Trevor wiggled forward so he could see under the couch, head completely disappearing. “Ah! There you are, Kovacs.”

Angela rolled her eyes, and since Trevor couldn’t see her face didn’t stop the fond smile that crept across it. “If you kept him in the enclosure this wouldn’t happen.”

There was a muffled exclamation that could have been anything from a cheer to a curse.

“Really, Trev. What happens when you’re at work and I can’t find him?”

Trevor finally emerged victorious, Kovacs thrust in the air. “Angela, I’m not putting him back into a cage.”

Oh.

God.

Angela couldn’t believe she hadn’t made the connection. “Of course you’re not. That was tactless of me.”

Trevor just grinned as he held Kovacs up with both hands. The turtle seemed to enjoy swimming through the air. “Kovacs and I are free men now. We’ll get into the water when we choose.”

Angela barked out a laugh. “You’re having baths together, aren’t you? I thought I heard you talking to yourself in there.”

Trevor coloured but the grin stayed on his face. “It’s a brand new century. Can’t a man and his turtle share a bath?”

Angela snorted and was relieved that Trevor was…well Trevor. “Right, buddy. Let’s sign this contract. The heating bill for your baths doesn’t pay for itself.”

Trevor opened his mouth to reply, probably something snarky, when Angela’s phone went off.

Believe me, don’t be a fool!

Angela ignored it. That ringtone meant one thing: Walton Media was trying to get in touch with her and ‘convince’ her to settle. It was a reminder to Not Pick Up.

She was going to say as much to Trevor, maybe make a joke about it when she heard a whimper from the floor.

Angela moved without thinking so she was crouched beside Trevor.

His hands were firmly over his ears as he rocked back and forward. Once she was at his level she realised that he was muttering ‘no’ to himself over and over again.

Kovacs scuttled back under the couch, his little head peeking out just slightly so he could watch them.

Angela ignored the turtle, turning back to Trevor. Oh fuck. He was crying.

“Trevor,” she started gently. Shit she wasn’t good with crying people. “Trevor, what’s wrong?”

Her phone rang again.

They’re lying to you!

She quickly silenced it and in that moment was suddenly very aware of her mistake.

“Jesus, Trever. I didn’t even think. It was meant to be a joke to remind me not to pick up the phone.”

Trever trembled. “This isn’t real.”

Angela swore under her breath. “This is very real, Trevor. I’m here.”

Trever curled even more into himself. Angela was horrified to see the tears intensify. “Like Gus? Like Mr Bernstein?”

“I’m not an actor, Trevor. You’re safe. You got out, remember? Told all of the million viewers to leave you the fuck alone.”

Trever let out a giggle seemingly despite himself.

Angela cautiously shifted forward. “That’s right, Trevor. What happened to you was fucking awful but you’re safe now. You did it.”

Finally Trevor raised his head. There was clarity back in his eyes despite the tears that filled them. “Angela?”

“I’m so fucking sorry, Trevor.”

A stubborn tear ran down his cheek. “It’s-it’s not your fault.”

Angela’s body moved before she gave it permission to, until she had wrapped herself around Trevor in what she hoped was a comforting hug. “It really is. I was the one who picked the song, both to contact you, and now as a stupid ringtone.”

Trevor sniffed. “It’s fine. I’m sorry.” But he made no attempt to get out of Angela’s embrace.

It occured to Angela in that moment that Trevor really hadn’t settled into the 21st century. He was clearly suffering severe trauma- and for a very good reason.

Angela had been so caught up fighting Walton Media that she had taken for granted Trevor’s surprisingly chill nature in dealing with having his whole life flipped completely on its axis.

“It’s not that I’m okay,” Trevor finally muttered as if reading Angela’s mind. “I only feel okay because you make me okay. Everything is still fucked.”

Angela pulled him tighter against her. “We didn’t really talk about it much after. I mean, once we’d gotten out of there. I just…it seemed that you wanted to just move on. You never mentioned this.”

Trevor snorted indelicately. “I didn’t exactly want you kicking me out. I’ve lost my mind. A song turned me into this.” He dropped his head so she couldn’t see his expression. He let out a sob. “I’m so weak.”

“Fuck, no you’re not,” Angela quickly corrected, she pulled away enough so she could look at him properly. “You’re the strongest person I know, Trevor. You’re getting a fucking job after finding out that your life is a lie. I literally had a panic attack yesterday over laundry. This is nothing. You’re allowed to not be okay.”

Trevor bravely lifted his head so he could look Angela in the eye. “I’m…I’m not okay.” He swallowed. “But I think I will be. Thanks.”

Angela finally smiled. “Any time, Trev.”

Trevor’s face pinked as he finally took in their position. “I should-I should get that contract signed.” He made no effort to move. Then finally: “Hey, Ange?”

Angela hummed in acknowledgment. She could get used to this closeness, maybe. They had been through hell together. The occasional hug wasn’t the worst.

“Delete that fucking song.”

The laughter that followed was cathartic and wonderful.

“Of course, Trev. Consider it gone.”

He runs to a bunch of meddling kids who hijack an investigation from him. He's convinced the skinny one is a werewolf, and that the dog is clearly a loose animal Fable

He gets home late one night to find a stinky masked man eating all his sugar cubes and baked beans. The two become good friends

Bigby has warrants out for a number of animal fables who keep dropping anvils on his head - particularly a smart-ass rabbit who he tried to eat once

Has to team up with a hunter alien to track and bring down an infestation of parasitic face-hugging bugs

In the 1920s, Bigby and a goon-ish mob boss agreed to stay out of eachother's teritories

Him and a red demon with a rock arm get into fisticuffs over a supernatural monster case and are immediately calmed by the presence of a small alley cat

He gets hit on by a british magician in a trench coat who is 100% down for the wolf part of him. Bigby isnt sure how to respond, mostly cus the magician's ex is a shark demi-god who *might* outrank him in good looks

Bigby Wolf just has delightful energy of someone who's serious nature clashes with the fantasical worlds he encounters, i love it

The characters are a big part of why Mortal Kombat has lasted over twenty-five years. Across the eleven main entries of the series, Mortal Kombat has featured a plethora of unique characters with lore to go with them. Of course, the stellar tournament fighter gameplay plays a big part in it too.

With the Mortal Kombat games and story modes getting bigger and bigger, they're more like movies now. This has warranted the attention of more famous actors who have taken both new and classic characters in newer games including Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11.

9 Vanessa Marshall

One might not recognize her by her face but her voice has become famous over the years. Vanessa Marshall has voiced many characters for movies, games, and TV shows across twenty years. She voiced Wonder Woman in multiple DC projects as well as Black Canary for Young Justice and Injustice 2.

Most might recognize her voice as that of fan-favorite Hera Syndulla on Star Wars Rebels. In Mortal Kombat 11, Vanessa Marshall provided the voice for Sheeva in both stories. Though, it is nearly impossible to detect Marshall's voice due to how deep the character's voice is.

8 Johnny Yong Bosch

With Mortal Kombat X came the introduction of the Kombat Kids. The next generation of fighters and one of them was the younger cousin of Kung Lao known as Kung Jin. Johnny Yong Bosch voiced Kung Jin, providing one of the more memorable characters in the story.

Some may know Bosch as the voice of Takeda in Akira but he is more likely to be recognized for his tenure as a Power Ranger. Johnny Yong Bosch was the second Black Ranger: Adam seen in Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, Power Rangers: Zeo, and Power Rangers: Turbo. Bosch also plays Artemis in the English dub of Sailor Moon Crystal.

7 Kelly Hu

It is completely understandable to miss this voice. D'Vorah's high-pitched and scratchy voice could hide any actor. Kelly Hu plays D'Vorah in both Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11: an insectoid villain who will betray anybody to keep her hive alive.

Kelly Hu has done other voice-over work including many DC projects and Karai in 2012's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In live-action, she was Pearl Zhu for a while on Vampire Diaries, Lady Deathstrike in X-2: X-Men United, and even a victim of Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan.

6 Ronda Rousey

One of the most famous UFC fighters of all time is a proud fan of Mortal Kombat. So, she got to live a fangirl's dream when she provided the voice and motion-capture for Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11. Back when the idea of a new Mortal Kombat movie was just rumors, some fans suggested Ronda could play her.

However, Ronda Rousey playing Sonya in one of the official games is just as great of an opportunity. Ronda has also appeared in movies to show off her fighting capabilities. One can find her in The Expendables 3, Fast & Furious 7, and Mile 22.

5 Steve Blum

From anime to TV shows to video games; more than likely Steve Blum has done a voice someone will recognize. Marvel's Wolverine in countless projects, Zeb on Star Wars: Rebels, Starscream from Transformers, Orochimaru from Naruto, and Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop.

Steve Blum has literally hundreds of credited voice-acting roles and with Mortal Kombat X, he added Sub-Zero to that long list. He voices Kuai Liang, the younger brother of the first Sub-Zero. Steve Blum would continue to play that character in Mortal Kombat 11 as Nethrrealm Studio's go-to voice for him.

4 Will Yun Lee

Kung Lao's role in Mortal Kombat X was actually quite small and most of the time, players only saw him as the undead warrior version of himself known as a Revenant. So, it's surprising that Will Yun Lee was given such a small role given his history for martial arts-related media.

Still, for such a small role, Will Yun Lee performs well. The actor has done many projects over the years: he was Harada in James Mangold's The Wolverine, he was Takeshi Kovacs on Altered Carbon, he was Wei Shen in Sleeping Dogs, and played Dr. Alex Park on The Good Doctor.

3 Tricia Helfer

Another famous voice for Sonya, Tricia Helfer played the hardened and more selfish version of Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat X. Tricia Helfer plays the character well and she helps in portraying Sonya's character arc. She also has voiced characters in other projects such as Kerrigan in StarCraft II: Wings Of Liberty.

Tricia Helfer is mostly known for her TV work including Lucifer where she plays Charlotte AKA Lucifer's mother. On Battlestar Galactica, she was Number Six for the entire series and on Van Helsing, she played Dracula.

2 Troy Baker

Some are likely to recognize Troy Baker from his time on Retro Replay or his podcast on his own YouTube channel. A very talented and humble gentleman who could lead live-action projects with ease if he ever wanted to. However, he has made a name for himself via his voice-acting.

Troy Baker has played countless video game, show, and movie characters. He was Joel in The Last Of Us games, Booker DeWitt in BioShock: Infinite, and was the face and voice of Jack Mitchell in Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare. He has also played a multitude of Marvel and DC characters over the years. In Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, he provided the voice of Erron Black and Shinnok.

1 Phil LaMarr

Kotal Kahn was yet another character introduced in Mortal Kombat X who would return for Mortal Kombat 11. In both, Kotal Kahn is voiced by voice actor legend: Phil LaMarr. However, before he was a voice actor, he starred on MADtv with his UBS man skits becoming famous. In Pulp Fiction, he played Marvin whom John Travolta shot right in the face.

These days, most know him for his voice acting which includes Hermes on Futurama, multiple characters on Family Guy, Aquaman in DC projects including Netherrealm's Injustice games, and the titular character of Samurai Jack.

22. What was your favorite TV program?

ER. I got obsessed with it this spring and it is just. SO. Good. Sometimes moments can be problematic and other times you’re sitting there thinking wow, this is quite progressive for 10/15/20 years ago, and there are techniques used in TV today because ER invented them. The plots can be a bit much sometimes especially as you get into later seasons but the characters are AMAZING. I need you and Karine and Alli to watch so I have someone to talk to about it (or at least gush over the perfection of Luka Kovac)

24. What was the best book you read?

This is hard, I read a lot of good ones this year! Probably The Chilbury Ladies Choir. One Dark Throne was really good too! And The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord deserves a mention too. And Turtles All the Way Down and Wicked Like A Wildfire!

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I don’t think I really “discovered” a whole lot of new music this year, actually. It was more new music from old favorites, like “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Unless the Anastasia Broadway score counts? Because yes XD

28. What was your favorite film of this year?

This was a good year for movies too! Can it be a three-way tie between Wonder Woman, The Last Jedi, and The Man Who Invented Christmas? I’m sure there are more that I saw that I loved. in 2018 I will track all the movies I see in my bullet journal.

Awesome Full Trailer For Netflix's ALTERED CARBON Season 2!

Netflix has shared a full trailer for Altered Carbon Season 2 and it looks freakin’ awesome! This next season is going to be stunning and there’s no doubt in my mind that this trailer is going to get fans crazy excited for what awaits them!

Anthony Mackie takes on the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs this time around, and the story takes place over 300 years in the future. “Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. The upcoming season features an entirely new mystery and mission — with new sleeves and new characters — while also examining the search for meaning and love when you live for centuries, and you must continue to live with what you have done in your past.”

I was big fan of the first season of this series and it looks like Season 2 could end up being even better! I’m looking forward to seeing how this next chapter of the story plays out. Watch the trailer for yourself and see what’s in store for us!

The series also stars Simone Missick (Luke Cage), Dina Shihabi (Jack Ryan), Torben Liebrecht (Operation Finale), James Saito (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Renee Elise Goldberry (Altered Carbon), Will Yun Lee (Altered Carbon), and Chris Conner (Altered Carbon).

Headcanon that Trevor is an animal person. Obviously he adores his turtle Kovacs, but I like to think he’s also the kind of person to gasp and point out every single dog he sees out and about. He finds out Angela has a cat and immediately starts gushing over how cute she is. Idk I just think it fits him :)

On the contrary, this season he has tallied three goals in the Premier League already while in 2018/19, he could boast with five goals and four assists in total and across all competitions.

Clearly, there’s more to this midfielder than just tackles and interceptions. But still, those are his most unique and established strengths – that’s the environment that gets the best out of him. Yes, he’s decent in other aspects as well but for the likes of Barcelona, being decent on the ball isn’t really enough.

The likes of Frenkie de Jong and Arthur, highly technical midfielders who can also do the defensive part well, are more welcoming reinforcements for the Catalans, and a similar thing can be concluded for Chelsea as well.

Frank Lampard’s renaissance has also rejuvenated the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, two of the Blues’ players who were struggling under Maurizio Sarri.

But now that Chelsea are also transitioning to an attacking force that dominates play – with 57.6% possession in the Premier League and 55.2% in the Champions League – maybe Kante’s expertise are slowly but surely becoming less relevant at Stamford Bridge as well.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule with big European teams that love to defend and hit on the counter – the likes of Atletico Madrid and Juventus could be examples of squads that prefer a slower approach to games and value a good defence over a sensational offence. Likewise, every top club will be involved in big games where Kante’s sheer energy is crucial.

In general, however, it feels like top teams would benefit more from an elite midfielder who’s able to break the lines, cut the deep blocks open and create opportunities than splashing the cash for a deep-lying ball-winner who thrives when out of possession and setting the attacks against the run of play.

When everything we’ve just said is taken into consideration, Barcelona’s “no” to a World Cup winning midfielder and two-time Premier League winner is no longer such a surprising verdict.

Not only that but it also may be an indication of what the future holds for those lying deep in the midfields of Europe’s biggest clubs. Play-breakers are becoming less and less prevalent, with playmakers starting to reign supreme.
