Free Third Thursday evening art tour scheduled for July 20
The next Third Thursday – the monthly evening tour of seven public art galleries – is scheduled for Thursday, July 20 from 6-9 p.m.
Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through cooperation and co-promotion by the organizing entities.
The July 20 tour will include the following exhibitions at these stops:
Lyndon House Arts Center – For July’s Third Thursday, the Lyndon House Arts Center will host a discussion with artist Rich Panico. Panico's ceramic works are on view in the “Collections from the Community” cases. He will speak about artistic processes in specific and universal terms. Panico will also use this collection of clay pots and objects spanning forty years of work as a point of departure for his discussion.
The Summer Shows are also on view. There are a total of five exhibitions to see: “Beloved Land: A Series by David Hale,” “In Wood and Word: Bible Scenes carved by Cal Logue,” “Time Warp…and Weft: Woven Works,” “To & Fro: Correspondence Art by Jack Logan and Kosmo Vinyl” and “Fold Unfold: Contemporary Coverlets.”
Finally in celebration of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation’s 50th year, Lyndon House Arts Center is happy to present a collection from “Growing Up in Athens.” This exhibit displays photographs of Athens taken over several decades. “Unidentified Houses of Athens” will also be on view until November 1.
Ciné – Ciné is extending “Dance This, Fight That” by Zuzka Vaclavik through July 20.
Hotel Indigo – Hotel Indigo presents “Rock Paper Scissors,” featuring works of art about paper by Malissa Ryder, Kendal Nevada King, Blair Janine Taylor, Lucha Rodriguez, Leisa Rich and Elizabeth Lide.
The GlassCube Gallery has launched the new site-specific installation entitled “Rainbow Cube” by artist team Candice Greathouse and Curtis Ames. On view through October, this 24/7 art exhibition space is transformed into a holographic experience looking at the nature of color, light and rainbows.
The Classic Center – For July’s Third Thursday, there are two new exhibitions to enjoy at The Classic Center. “Warm Days, Cool Nights” in Gallery I features Ariel Lockshaw’s hot, hot pool paintings, Frances Berry’s minimal golden hour photos, Wade Sheldon’s refreshing nautical night skies and Hannah Ehrlich’s dreamy cloud paintings.
Jackie Dorsey has a solo exhibition in Gallery II. Her watercolor portraits of familiar faces of musicians, artists and chefs of Athens are not to be missed. Dorsey’s work will be on view until December.
Georgia Museum of Art – The museum will offer two events this Third Thursday. The Thursday Twilight Tour: Highlights of the Permanent Collection will be led by docents at 7 p.m. The summer Museum Mix will feature DJ Nate from Wuxtry playing a wide variety of genres on 7-inch vinyl records while the galleries are open and food and drink is provided by sponsors and the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art; 8–11 p.m., free.
The Georgia Museum of Art will present a number of exhibitions for July’s Third Thursday. One exhibition displays works by the contemporary Georgia-based artist Kristin Casaletto titled "The Past Is Never Dead: Kristin Casaletto.”
"Avocation to Vocation: Prints by F. Townsend Morgan” will also be displayed. It is the first exhibition to focus entirely on the WPA-era artist since his death in 1965.
"The Genius of Martin Johnson Heade” tells the story of landscape, marine and still-life paintings by the 19th-century innovator, his predecessors and his contemporaries.
"Modern Living: Giò Ponti and the 20th-Century Aesthetics of Design” is an exhibition presenting more than 50 objects. This exhibition represents some of the Italian designer’s most outstanding pieces of furniture and decorative objects from the beginning of his career in the 1920s through the 1950s.
Finally, there are 13 galleries that house a large portion of the Georgia Museum of Art's permanent collection, including many of the 100 American paintings that made up Alfred Heber Holbrook's founding gift.
ATHICA –  ATHICA galleries will not be open for the July Third Thursday.
The Dodd Galleries at the Lamar Dodd School of Art – The Dodd Galleries are closed for the summer.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public.

MILCHFLASCHE
Packaging
The beautifully shaped milk bottles from the 70’s inspired us to make a redesign. We created a new cap and thinner body, that makes the bottle appear in a more elegant and modern way. The simple and colorful labels in pastel tones give a nice vintage touch to it. The milk is available in different flavors, each with its matching design. That milk stands for premium-quality, good taste and good design.
CLOSE
Floor Lamp
The idea behind CLOSE is to take center stage in every room. Closely intertwined with its environment, the lamp is constantly looking for a companion: a shoulder to lean on in a mutual relationship. The minimalist design necessitates that the lamp never stands isolated from other objects and, therefore, CLOSE flourishes within the company of others, providing her with a strong pillar of confidence.
Consisting of multiple pieces, the lamp allows for compact packaging and its plug-in system guarantees user-friendly and easy assembling.
WEBIKE
Bike Sharing Station
The world is at a turning point. In 2030 probably 60% of the world population is going to live in cities. The number of spatial compact megacities is increasing.
We are convinced that bike sharing spots will become highly popular and certainly lift up the comfort of a living in cities. Humans are spending a lot of energy into their daily life and technology gives the possibility to turn this energy into electricity.
With our concept the energy of a person who rides a bike is used to generate electricity to charge batteries. Subsequently this will charge technical devices in their carried backpack, without a single cable.

Space Junk, Time To Clean The Mass Of Debris Orbiting Earth
Alexander Stirn, Suddeutsche Zeitung, June 14, 2017
UEDEM--Two nondescript containers in this northwest German town help track the dangers of collisions in outer space. The “Space Situational Awareness Center,” operated by the German Federal Armed Forces does not, however, protect Germany and the rest of the world from little green men or other space villains with laser guns. The dangers mentioned above are simply made of debris.
More than 20,000 objects, with a diameter of at least 10 centimeters (4 inches), are orbiting earth in uncontrollable circuits. These include broken satellites, burned-out rocket fuel cells, and general debris from collisions or targeted destruction procedures. In addition to that, you have about 750,000 pieces measuring 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) that are not detectable from Earth.
For starters, all of this debris constitutes a major danger to the nearly 1,500 active satellites currently orbiting the planet. The last crash happened in 2009 when a Russian Kosmos satellite collided with a U.S. Iridium satellite. The result was some 10,000 fragments, adding to the considerable debris already in place.
“Sixty years of space exploration have led to a lot of ‘traffic’ circulating above the Earth,” says Colonel Thomas Spangenberg, military head of operations at Uedem’s Space Situational Center. All that traffic also means an increased risk of accidents, especially when there are plenty of rogue “drivers” and no real rules of the highway nor any reliable roadway repair service. All attempts to contain the amount of debris or force it into predictable orbits have failed up until now. Plans to tow away the wreckage and dispose of it somehow have also failed to take off due to the lack of available technology, funding and political will to seriously pursue them.
“During normal traffic accidents on the motorway the police will block off that portion of motorway,” says Gerald Braun, civilian head of operations at the Center, which is jointly operated by the German Federal Air Force and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). “But that is impossible up there. It’s an active high-speed traffic system, so nothing can be stopped.”
Braun and Spangenberg have only one option, namely to prevent the worst from happening.
Predicting collisions is like poking around in the dark. “At the moment we are dependent on the Americans and their global network, just like the rest of the Western hemisphere,” says Spangenberg. At least 30 different radar stations and optical telescopes aid the U.S. in tracking the orbits of an estimated 30,000 objects. Some 18,000 of these satellites and pieces of debris are recorded in a catalogue that anyone can access. The rest is top secret, though some of the confidential materials are shared with Transatlantic partners.
One of the pieces that Americans do not share information about, is the so-called “unknown” object, which is currently worrying officials at the Center since it is scheduled to pass quite close to a German civilian observation satellite within the next two days. “Unknown” is believed to one of these top secret objects, perhaps a spy satellite, a metal splinter or a burned out rocket fuel cell.
“We have no idea what is heading towards us,” says Gerald Braun “We have no access to the size of the object nor the data in the catalogue.”
But this kind of predicament is supposed to change, as Germany has announced plans to monitor all space junk by themselves in future.
The name of that particular project is Gestra. The DLR and Air Force want to be able to independently track the orbits of satellites and debris between 500 to 1,200 kilometers (310-745 miles) in altitude through the use of an experimental, modular as well as mobile observation radar system located within the containers at Uedem. One of the containers sends radar beams into space while the other container, situated 100 meters (328 feet) apart from one another, receives the reflected signals and analyzes them.
Gestra is supposed to be up and running within the next year, though the Center will also have to learn how to process the received data. Tens of thousands of warnings of potential collisions, based on information from the Center’s and U.S. authorities, are already collated at the German site each year. The information is filtered, analyzed and lands, if the danger is considerable, in room 109, the operational heart of the Center. Critical situations arise once or twice a month: if a collision is imminent, the satellite operator is contacted and kindly asked to perform evasive maneuvers.
“In the future, this data will be analyzed in a fully automated process,” says Braun. “Otherwise it will become impossible to tackle the task.”
It’s not clear if Gestra’s resolution capacity will be even stronger than the Americans’, who can identify objects with a diameter of 10 centimeters. But even if Gestra could manage to locate objects as small as five centimeters, it would not solve all problems: even an object of only three centimeters can cause devastating damage. “As opposed to aviation space, of which we have an absolute map at any given time, the space surrounding Earth is unchartered. And we never will be able to charter it anyway,” says Braun. “In the end, we are flying blind.”
All of this is a warning of the importance of avoiding the creation of additional space junk. Only a few countries, such as France for example, have legislation in place to support the prevention of creating space debris. Even Germany is behind the times. Instead, such vague policy suggestions have been made as lowering satellite orbits at the end of their lives to 520 kilometers. The Earth’s atmosphere is still dense enough at that height that the satellite is slowed down and, over a period of 25 years, slowly incinerates and burn up. In addition to that, pressure tanks should be bled dry, batteries discharged and fuel cells dried up completely. In short, anything explosive needs to be stabilized prior to descent.
But junk prevention costs money and very few satellite operators want to pay for that. “We need politicians to enforce guidelines,” says Holger Krag, head of the Bureau for Space Debris with the European Space Agency in Darmstadt. “But the responsible space exploration committee of the United Nations has not passed a law in decades because various states block each other.”
So, there is only refuse collection. Ideas and initiatives for getting rid of space junk are based on this simple principle. The European Union has allocated 15 million euros for a “Remove Debris” project, which aims to prove that defective satellites can be tamed by utilizing nets or harpoons. The captured satellite could then be dragged to a lower orbit to incinerate.
But such innovations are futile on their own, says DLR manager Braun. “It is essential that we have a picture of our own about what is going on up in space.”

Inside the 2016 New York Toy Fair: Every child's fantasy expo 3D-printed activity figures, STEM toys, an entire pack of Legos, and much more.
NEW YORK—There exists a place on the planet where toys manage, one end to the other, and that place is the yearly New York Toy Fair. It's the place all the greatest names for the sake of entertainment (think Lego, Mattel, and comparable organizations) assemble to report the following huge things hitting toy store racks. Much to the daunt of children all over the place, the Toy Fair is an industry-just occasion, so we needed to give you an inside take a gander at the freshest toys that may make it into your front room.
The toys flaunted at the reasonable ran the array from instructive and fascinating to fun and happy. Obviously there was another Barbie Dreamhouse that is greater than many puppy houses, and new Star Wars Lego sets including Stormtroopers, Rey, and Kylo Ren. Mattel enjoyed a reprieve from Barbie buildup to likewise report the $300 ThingMaker 3D printing toy machine, which gives kids a chance to make their own particular toys by utilizing a streamlined 3D printing application with plans that can be sent to the ThingMaker for creation.
In any case, a major subject of the current year's Toy Fair was construct and-play items that urge children to make their own toys sans preparation and explore different avenues regarding them. A number of these items were named as "STEM" toys, or items that urge children to learn science, innovation, designing, and math abilities while they play. There were a lot of assemble your-own-structure toys, large portions of which were gone for young ladies, for example, GoldieBlox's sets loaded with pulleys, levers, and everything young ladies would need to manufacture toy resorts, play areas, and then some. GoldieBlox likewise has a "Motion picture Machine" set that gives kids a chance to fabricate their own zoetrope to watch films with, and they can make and print their own particular moving pictures utilizing the GoldieBlox associated application.
Science-centered toys had children finding out about everything from reused materials to manageable vitality. Thames and Kosmos had various science and material science related toy sets, including one that has children exploring different avenues regarding elective vitality and finding out about warming, conduction, convection, and more by building a sun oriented fueled house out of styrofoam and the Geckobot set that gives kids a chance to make their own divider climbing reptilian robot.
The current year's Toy Fair left us feeling confident for whatever remains of the year's toys and for the eventual fate of toys. The sorts of toys introduced were differing, and they likewise demonstrated that toys can be fun, instructive, and hands-on even in a world devoured by all things advanced. So when you get your hands on some of these toys later in the year, don't be modest—have a ton of fun with them while your children aren't looking.
