I loved Rory and Jess. Then Logan came along. I still love their relationship in the earlier seasons.

I loved Buffy and Angel. Then Spike arrived. I still root for them when I rewatch the early seasons.

I loved Korra and Mako. Then Asami got more developed. I still like them together when I go back.

I loved Diego and Lila. They were my favorite. The deception, the silliness, Diego navigating his crush on her and his obsession with saving JFK. The absolute WILDNESS of season 3. It was great. But then they threw her and Five together. And it made sense to me. Do I still like Diego and Lila in the early seasons? Yes. Do I like Lila and Five more? Yes. There can be both.

Been watching Legends of Korra (haven’t seen the show since 2012 and 2015) lately. I decided to draw Makorra because I shipped them since the first season back in 2012. They’re my childhood favorites 😍😍 also the song “Pour Some Sugar on Me” by Def Leppard makes me think of them 🤣.

There's one thing I don't understand why they did in tlok and that is the strange love triangle/square/whatever shape that happened in the first two seasons.

To summarise: Bolin had a thing for Korra, but Korra had a thing for Mako, but Mako was with Asami but still had a thing for Korra.

Season One built up this whole relationship of Korra and Mako but it went downhill almost immediately in Season 2. Not to mention Mako basically being with Asami, then Korra then back with Asami 💀💀

The writer's were trying so hard to have some romantic tension, but it got old almost immediately and did nothing to help the popularity of the characters. And throwing Bolin in for no reason? Cruel.

It was like they were trying to have the relationship that Katara and Aang had in the course of one/two-ish seasons instead of having it spread out like in Atla. Or trying to feed the zutara shippers by having Korra and Mako being together (not like it lasted long)

And it made Asami and Korra's relationship super rushed as well. The first two seasons they were competing with eachother for who could be with Mako, then season 3 was just them getting along, and season four rushing their relationship by having Korra awoll in the swamp and Asami doing completely other stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Korra and Asami, I just think the writers had split views on what ship they wanted to sail and the ships that sailed were only half-made. The comics probably go into their relationship deeper, but kinda bummed we didn't get to see more of their chemistry on-screen.

In conclusion, tlok was trying to live up to atla's couples (Aang and Katara, Zuko and Katara, etc) and instead made a romantic mess the first two seasons and left the others half baked.

I need justice for them.

I know everyone wants to say that Korra resembles Katara -

But I think she actually resembles On Ji more. Take a look.

The side profile and the eyebrows and the hair style are strikingly similar, and even Korra's nose is a bit like On Ji's.

Korra's chin is a bit more pointed, but even the face shape is a lot like On Ji.

Actually, their faces have the same angulature.

I always shipped Aang and On Ji, so this is just giving me lots of ideas now, lol.

So about that dark B1 scene…

I learned something new from reddit today.

Korra, in her own words, “wasn’t the avatar anymore” and she wasn’t at the edge of that cliff to self-reflect. She came pretty close to following her fears all the way down.

I didn’t catch that on my first watch. Or my second watch. That healing hut was full of her friends and loved ones and not one of them realized how deeply losing three elements had cut into Korra.

Not one…save for the person who didn’t give a fuck whether she was the Avatar or not.

He followed her. Even when Tenzin told him not to. Even when she yelled at him to go back to his city where he belongs, he followed her.

Because he will always follow her. No matter how crazy things get.

Are we really supposed to sit here and not ship this?? I am not okay.

I just don't get why some people interpret Mak/orra as this "physically passionate with fiery emotions, but incompatible" or "just based on teenage hormones and sexual attraction, but lacking deeper emotions" relationship either when defending or critiquing it.

Specifically on Mako's side, Asami is for Mako definitely the relationship that was mostly based on physical attraction and passion, and this is very evident in the first scene where they meet. It's also obviously much more (surface level) 'stable' and in a way more romantically compatible and comfortable than his relationship with Korra. Mako could have been 'fine' dating Aasmi, he had a great woman that he was really attracted to, and that's half the point. He doesn't choose Korra because he's "more hormonally attracted" to her - like there is actually 0 scenes even indicating Mako is that physically attracted to Korra. He chose her because it's emotionally disruptive and significant for him. That was the relationship that pushed him in a new direction and inspired him to change. It takes awhile for him to realize he is served better admiring Korra in this way in a platonic manner, outside of a romantic relationship - but his core appreciation for her doesn't change form.

On Korra's side, the relatioship basically represents her teenage idealism. She'd been isolated most of her youth, so Mako is probably her first actual crush, and it's based on the things she valued the most at the time. Mako is an extremely capable bender to the level that he matches her. The scene where Korra "falls" for Mako is watching him probend! Also this whole idea of their relationship as "we drive each other mad, but it makes me hot" lasts literally 0.5 seconds for Korra. There is no indication that Korra is turned on by anger. There's like 1 scene where she tries to rile up Mako to admit he likes her in a bravado manner, and 1 time they kiss during (not even) an argument, but it's overall depicted that all the fighting makes Korra extremely miserable, unable to be vulnerable with Mako and it does not in fact enhance some sort of physical hotness, but largely takes away from it. Later, Korra realizes she actually wants to express her own feelings as part of her romantic attraction and connection and realizes she can't do that with Mako.

Ironically, there are actually more scenes where Korra expresses direct physical admiration of Asami than of Mako even in book 1, whereas the show itself frames Korra's main admiration for Mako's skill as a bender. It also builds their relationship mostly on mutual trust that isn't physical or emotional, but about relying on each other in dangerous situations. When it comes to actually emotionally intimate scenes, Korra doesn't show that deep trust in Mako in several instances, or being comfortable expressing herself more deeply with him: her main trust in him is out "on the field". Which continues to be the thing that Korra appreciates about Mako long after they stop being romantically involved, she knows he's "got her back" and she trusts him completely on that level.

Again this isn't really a defense or a critique of the relationship, just how I interpret their tumultuous but significant relatively short-lived romance that turned into a life-long friendship and mutual admiration as shown/implied in canon.

Is it just me or is like the beginning of mako and korra’s relationship kind of giving off sophie and fitz??? Like the second they met I was like, I’ve seen this before. (However Korra’s personality is nowhere near Sophie’s. But Mako and Fitz? Reincarnation of the same being)

Also like bro really said, “You’re the Avatar and I’m an idiot.” in the second episode of season 1.
