The Early Life of Spaniard Carolina Marin

Carolina was born on June 15, 1993, in Huelva, Spain, to Gonzalo Marín Pérez and Toni Martin. Her mother was a flamenco dancer, and Carolina showed signs of becoming a professional dancer. However, fate had another plan for her, and she decided to play badminton with all her heart and passion. Marin underwent training at the IES La Orden in Huelva and later at the National Centre in Madrid. Under the skilled coaching of Fernando Rivas, she evolved into an explosive player with speed and agility.

She won a silver medal at the 2009 European Junior Championships and brought laurels to Spain by becoming the first Spanish player to achieve the feat. The same year, she won gold at the European U-17 Junior Championships and the Irish International tournament. She also won the 2011 European Junior Championships and secured a bronze at the World Junior Championships.

In 2013, she became the first Spaniard to win a Grand Prix Gold after securing the first position at the London Grand Prix. She also won her first European Championships title during the same year. She won gold at the Copenhagen World Championships and European Championships in 2014.

2015 was a golden year for Carolina because she won the England Open Championship, Malaysia Open, Australian Open, French Open, and Hong Kong Open. She also won the World Championships by defeating Saina Nehwal of India. In 2016, she won the gold at the Rio Olympics and became the first non-Asian to win the Olympic badminton women's singles gold medal. She secured the European Championships in 2016 and 2017. Marin also won the Japan Open in 2017.

After a brief hiatus due to injury, Marin won her fourth consecutive European Championships in 2018. She won the World Championships by defeating P. V. Sindhu of India. It made her the first female player to win three World Championships titles. She also won the World Tour Titles at Japan Open and China Open.

She underwent ACL reconstruction surgery in 2019 and took an eight-month break to recover. She won the China Open, Syed Modi, and Italian International tournaments in September 2019.

In 2020, she reached the semi-finals and finals of several crucial tournaments. She won the Thailand Open by defeating World No. 1 Tai Tzu-Ying in 2021. She won her fifth consecutive title at the European Championships. She could not defend her title at the Tokyo Olympics due to an injury. In 2022, after several months of recovery, she won the silver at the French Open.

This time he’s speaking to NME from Seoul about his latest solo venture ‘Love Theory’, which is a collaboration with rapper-singer Wonstein, but before the interview even begins, he makes a point to apologise for wearing a mask even over our virtual chat. A tell-tale sign of someone incredibly tuned in to what others may be thinking or feeling before they even say anything, a fitting trait when you’re the leader of an ever-expanding group tha currently clocks in at hefty 23 members.

“I’m very thankful for all of the interest and love people have shown towards ‘Love Theory’,” Taeyong says, switching throughout the interview between his native Korean and English. He wrote and produced the song alongside Wonstein and frequent SM Entertainment producer Zayson. “Love itself is very, is very difficult and complicated for me,” adds Taeyong, who wrote and produced the song alongside collaborator Wonstein and frequent SM producer Zayson, “so Wonstein helped me out a lot with the lyrics to the song”.

The pair’s collaboration evolved organically, with the song having come together a lot earlier than people may expect. Fittingly, the finished product is a bit of a labour of love for the K-pop idol. “This is actually a track that we’ve worked on quite a while ago, it’s not one where we just got to it,” Taeyong reveals. “I actually reached out to Wonstein first saying how I wanted to make a song and we spent a good week or so just working on the pieces, excluding things, gathering our brains together and then just started working.”

The result is a playful and melodic hip-hop track that charms listeners with the relatable woes of trying – and failing – to understand love (he literally begs for a theory to master it). It’s a two-hander, with our protagonist Taeyong desperately reaching out for advice from a love coach in the shape of Wonstein. The dynamic is solidified in a video that accompanied the release, which sees the pair navigate a whimsical, pastel saturated dreamscape.

But the key theme in the video is one fans know and love: that is Taeyong’s face. He wears a T-shirt with his own face on it, hides under a duvet blazoned with his own face and even draws a set of curtains where, you guessed it, his own face materialises upon closure. “So there were actually quite a lot of individuals on set who wanted to kind of take the shirts and the set designs,” Taeyong says when asked about who now has custody of all these Taeyong-centric pieces, “but I felt like my mom would probably want [them] the most so I’ saved him for her. I actually haven’t had the chance to see her yet, but [I’m] planning on seeing her soon so I will definitely get them over to her.”

While having choreography be as much a part of the song’s identity as the music itself isn’t anything new in K-pop, for Taeyong, it goes a little further than just being impressive dance moves: “It’s always very fun watching the fans recreate and upload their own versions [of the choreography], I really enjoy that.” He admits that whether fans will be able to recreate his creations is a key part of his process, a goal that sits front and centre through the choreography development process. “I feel like dance is, in a sense, a way to express music. It just comes naturally for me,” he says.

Whether Taeyong is standing alone or nestled into the 23 members of NCT and their various sub-units, the eye is always pulled in his direction at some point. The masterful control he has over his body and face, as well as his second-nature ease of musicality, makes you believe being the centre of attention is a role he was simply born to play, but he admits that confidence is never anything that comes easy, in fact he even mentions it as our call first connects because he’s nervous to sit in his Zoom window alone.

When asked how he must have felt, then, seeing himself blazened all across the ‘Love Theory’ music video? “Embarrassing. I was really, really embarrassed,” he laughs. The lyrics to the song make reference to his own challenges with self-confidence, as Wonstein sings: “So you’re a rich dude / Speak some English, too / And you ’bout my height, fam / What you lack, son, is 자신감 / In English, ‘Confidence’”. It’s a playful self-awareness that many people who look to be thriving from the outside but continue to struggle with self-doubt may be all too familiar with.

When it comes to nurturing his own self belief, Taeyong says everything can be credited to his members, both in NCT and the SM Entertainment supergroup SuperM. “I’d have to say that the biggest thing that I realised when I was alone and without my members is that, well, I’m really not confident without them”, he admits. “I first thought that working as a solo artist might not be as difficult [as in a group], but what I came to realise is that it’s all the same and working alone, compared to being with my SuperM or NCT team members, I’m actually not as confident. They are my confidence boosters.”

As part of not one, but two wildly popular boybands, Taeyong finds himself in the unique position of being spread across multiple generations of success within the company – the fresh and bubbling triumphs of his own group and the learned, illuminated careers of the veteran SuperM members. “I actually do seek advice from other individuals who have released solo albums before, such as Baekhyun and Taemin,” he says. “I really get a lot of advice and confidence from them, especially Baekhyun who guided me to the right direction when I was unsure of myself,”

The pair’s ongoing friendship within and outside of their activities in SuperM has delighted fans, with compilations of tender moments between them littering social media with a clear fondness for the way the elder member, who’s currently undergoing mandatory military enlistment, takes Taeyong under his wing. It’s clear that friendship is of great value to Taeyong too: “I am really thankful to him. He would tell me to just do what I want to do and, you know, show what you want to show because you’re the best. That was very helpful”.

When you’re thrust into leadership from the outset, it may be hard to see your own needs as important as the collectives’, but what’s abundantly clear is that the collective is necessary for Taeyong to meet his needs. Again, everything is about communication. It’s part of the reason he’s set up his own YouTube channel, TY TRACK, with the hopes of reaching out to fans in a different way. “My YouTube channel is a place where I could interact and communicate with my fans, and I’ve been filming a lot these days, like performances and my daily life and my fish tank,” he laughs as he mentions that final point. The fish tank, fans will appreciate, is still going strong.

But what Taeyong seems to miss most – as the world slowly eases out of pandemic-induced measures – is face-to-face communication. He mentions it throughout the chat, wanting to meet fans face to face, wanting to do interviews face to face too. It feels like a lifeblood he requires to know that the work he’s doing is resonating.

It’s at the forefront of his mind, too, when asked about any goals he still wishes to achieve when it seems like all the ones he’s previously set for himself have been ticked off already. “[If I] were to say a goal, it’s not something major, but it’s just being able to meet our fans right now at this moment and being able to interact with them and see them face to face again”.

You could say love is, at its core, all about cultivating connection, about being in sync with someone else while nourishing yourself in the process. Though Tayeong says he finds it complicated, it seems like he’s already mastered it without requiring a theorum.

There are certain fundamental truths Yuta knows about the universe - the sun always rises in the east, milk goes before cereal and that Nakamoto Yuta does not blush.

In freshman year, equipped with only a translation app on his phone, Yuta left his hometown of Osaka for Seoul. He had been offered a full-ride sports scholarship by Sooman University. He would play for the school’s soccer team and pursue, to his parents’ relief, a more “practical” degree in Business Management.

He would be playing with the team where some of his favourite soccer players had first gotten their start before moving to the Japanese league. It was a dream come true. Well, almost.

He had just never imagined it would be quite this...lonely.

Over his first month in the city, he could count the number of people he had spoken to on one hand. The first was his roommate with whom his conversations were limited to “hello” and “good morning”. The second and third were two middle-aged cafeteria ladies, who would coo over him and give him an additional helping whenever they saw that he was down. The younger of the two looked so much like his aunt, that it made his heart long for his family back in Osaka.

The fourth and final person was Mr. Jung Yunho, the Student Affairs Counsellor - an energetic man in his early thirties who had lived in Japan for most of his adult life. He had sense that something was amiss and had tried to pry into what was bothering Yuta right from their first meeting. After about three weeks of beating around the bush, Yuta had finally, begrudgingly, confided in him about his homesickness and his trouble communicating in Korean. Mr Jung had listened intently through it all, occasionally patting his shoulder to comfort him.

“You must feel very lonely, Yuta”, the older man had told him, resting one hand on his shoulder, eyes shining with sincerity.

It was lonely. He didn’t have a single person he could call a friend. Everyone he had met thus far seemed so busy, living a life far too fast paced to notice the quiet foreign student at the back of the lecture hall. He wondered if anyone in his classes would even notice if he stopped attending lectures. The only time he felt like he belonged somewhere was when he was playing soccer with the team, but even then he wondered whether he could call his teammates, his friends.

“Let’s start with helping you communicate first, shall we?”, Mr Jung had said, interrupting his self effacing train of thought.

“I’ll put you in touch with someone who can help tutor you in Korean. A Korean Literature student who’s been working with some other foreign students as well. I have a gut feeling you two will become great friends!”

That was how Yuta had come to know you. He clicked on your kakaotalk profile picture and zoomed in to your beaming face. You had one of those warm, welcoming faces. A face that one would trust immediately. Your face gave the impression that smiling was your resting face. The laugh lines on either side of your mouth and the crinkles beside your eyes were further proof of that.

Yuta had sent you a short, impersonal message introducing himself as the student Mr. Jung wanted you to tutor. He had not wanted to get his hopes up. Having been all by himself in a foreign country for the past month, being dependent on someone felt strange to him.

Still, before he went to bed that night he found himself refreshing his messages, hoping for a notification from you. As his luck would have it, you hadn’t replied even the following morning. Yuta had swallowed the lump forming in his throat, pushing any disappointment out of his mind.

With those thoughts in mind, he had busied himself with getting ready for the first match of the season against the neighbouring university.

At half-time, Sooman University was trailing behind Seoul University with a score of 3-1. With the centre forward benched because of a foul, things weren’t looking up for the team. Yuta had made several attempts to score a goal throughout the game but had been stopped by the right-back, Park Minsoo, on Seoul University’s team. He was much taller than Yuta and had a larger build, which he used to his advantage.

If there was one thing he absolutely hated, it was foul play. Yuta’s teammates had tried signalling to the referee that Park had been playing dirty, but the referee, infamous for being biased towards the Seoul University team, had brushed off their concern.

After having collided with him several times over the last half, Yuta was getting impatient. He knew this wouldn’t end well for him but he had let his anger get the best of him. After another foul-worthy tackle from Park, Yuta used his side to shove the man out of his way with all his energy. Perhaps it was the momentum with which Yuta had crashed into him or pure dramatics, Park landed on his back howling in anger.

The referee blew his whistle to signal a pause and the players from both teams began fighting amongst each either, trying to put the blame on the opposing team’s player. The situation with Park must have been grave because the Seoul team’s coach and manager hurried on to the pitch as well. Yuta’s team captain stepped forward to defend Yuta from the wrath of the other side. But ofcourse, being Japanese, Yuta barely understood a word being spoken. There was no way he would be able to dig himself out of this.

The thought of being benched for the rest of the semester crept into his mind. The fear of losing his scholarship made his legs tremble and he instantly regretted not heeding his older sister’s lifelong advice to him to be more gentle.

Then you appeared. Like an angel, only instead of white robes and a halo made of pure light, you wore a blinding neon green visor and an equally garish hot pink t-shirt bearing the Korean Literature Department’s logo. He saw you hop down the bleachers and squeeze through half a dozen sweaty soccer players, to thrust yourself in between Yuta and the opposing team’s coach. You explained somewhat emphatically to the referee that Yuta was a foreigner who barely spoke Korean and that any missteps on his part were purely a misunderstanding because of the language barrier. The man didn’t seem convinced, grumbling and gesturing animatedly at the two of you, egged on further by the other coach’s growing impatience.

Yuta wished he could understand what was being said. He tried to hang on to every word being spoken, but the adrenaline from the tackle and the heightened atmosphere made it even harder for him to concentrate. He picked up a few words here and there. A mention of a foul. Then someone yelling out the word suspension, which made him clench his fist so hard he thought he would pop a vein in his arm.

But he understood the last words to come out of your mouth, perfectly well.

“Please let my friend off the hook this one time? I apologise on his behalf”.

Friend. No, he definitely had not misheard that. You had called him your friend.

You had yanked Yuta forward by the arm, pushing his head down into a deep bow. Yuta took the hint and apologised, somewhat robotically, to Park and his coach. “I saw your text. I’m really sorry I didn’t reply any earlier. But to be fair I had wished you good luck with your game but I doubt you saw my message considering you were down here getting shoved around by that asshole Park”, you had started rambling while Yuta chugged the drink.

Then he did something that he would cringe about for years to come. He should have known right then, on day one, that he could never act like his usual self around you.

We would have loved to go to Scotland for the first time and enjoy the Glasgow Film festival but this year is different and it will be a home online festival. From the 24th of February to the 7th of March, Glasgow is coming into our home with a vibrant and amazing line-up.

The GFF will host 7 World premieres, 2 European premieres, 50 UK premieres online. World premieres include Anthony Baxter’s Eye of the Storm and an exploration of the life of punk rock’s least conventional front person Poly Styrene: I Am A Cliché. World premiere of Creation Stories written by Irvine Welsh and starring Ewen Bremner leads a programme filled with strong Scottish stories.

The festival will open on Wednesday 24 February with Lee Isaac Chung’s autobiographical drama following a Korean-American family Minari, starring The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun, and close on Sunday 7 March with Suzanne Lindon’s debut feature Spring Blossom, a coming-of-age tale set against a dreamy Parisian backdrop.

Scottish highlights include:

West Ham United are delighted to announce that five women’s players have committed to new contracts with the Barclays FA Women’s Super League club.

As the Irons return for pre-season training ahead of the 2020/21 campaign in the coming week, a key group of core first-team stars have put pen to paper on new deals with the Hammers ahead of the team’s third season as a professional outfit in the top flight of female football in England.

Captain Gilly Flaherty, forward Alisha Lehmann, Korean midfielder Cho So-hyun and Canadian attacker Adriana Leon have signed new two-year deals with West Ham United, keeping them with Matt Beard’s side until 2022.

French international Kenza Dali, meanwhile, has agreed a new one-year deal with West Ham, extending the midfielder’s stay in east London until 2021.

Head coach Matt Beard told whufc.com: “I am thrilled to secure the futures of Gilly, Cho, Alisha, Adriana and Kenza at West Ham United.

“The five players who have committed their futures to the Irons have proven themselves to be key individuals in our team, both on and off the pitch, and help to form the spine of a side that I am confident can challenge for honours in the new season and beyond.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Gilly, Cho, Alisha, Dri and Kenza during their respective careers with West Ham so far and I am looking forward to continuing our good work together through pre-season and into the new campaign.”

Defender Flaherty moved to the Hammers in the club’s first summer as a professional women’s team, joining the Irons from Chelsea and becoming the team’s first captain. The centre-back has made 48 appearances in all competitions for the side, scoring one goal, and skipped the team to the Women’s FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in May 2019.

Swiss international Lehmann also switched to West Ham in 2018, joining the east London team from BSC YB Frauen. The No7 has scored 13 goals in 48 outings in all competitions for West Ham.

Cho, who signed for the Irons in January 2019, has made 23 appearances since switching to West Ham, while Leon has scored nine goals in 26 showings in all competitions since her transfer from Seattle Reign.

Dali joined West Ham from Dijon last summer and finished as the team’s top scorer in the curtailed 2019/20 campaign, netting seven times in 19 appearances.

The Exciting Players of the FA Women's Super League. (Part 2 of 2)

Last week, I discussed the structure of the English Women's League and four impressive players this season so far. To add to the list of talent, this part will include more diverse players. I would like to bring up once again that this selection of players is based merely on my opinion and is not biased towards any team and that this list is not placed in any order.

5- Janine Beckie

The Canadian International traded in her Sky Blue FC jersey for a Manchester City one last August. After the forward failed to impress last season—15 goalless appearances—she made it her mission to start fresh and prove all the doubters wrong. Last season, she helped Manchester City secure the double by providing them with 8 goals in her 15 appearances. The move started to make sense the more she played. This season, she is acting as more of a playmaker—contributing 3 assists of her 6 games in the league; however, during their run in the Champions League, she only managed to secure 5 goals and an assist to her name. They gave Atletico Madrid a run for their money but came up short of a goal on aggregate.

6- Ji So-Yun

Chelsea’s Number 10 is one of the best midfielders in the world, it only takes watching her play for fans to come to the same conclusion. The South Korean holds the goal-scoring record for her international team with 55 goals at the age of 28. Currently, she has 3 goals and two assists in the league but her hunger for success ensures that she is not done yet. Ji shines up the pitch and shows no weaknesses while playing. Her crosses and skills are lethal and her agility helps her slip through the feet of the defenders. 7- Leah Williamson

Leah’s Arsenal journey is an epic love story. Joining at the age of nine, the now 22-year-old plays a crucial role in the current champions’ starting defense. The England International climbed up the academy’s rankings, until 2014, when she made her senior debut during a 2-0 loss to Birmingham City. Williamson is one of the most consistent centre-backs in both the league and for her national team. This season, Arsenal managed to keep 10 clean sheets in 13 games and Williamson is one of the reasons behind the team’s defensive success. Considering her age, she manages to play week in and week out like any mature and experienced player. Her positioning allows her to read attacks well. Fans can tell, just by watching her play, the amount of passion she holds for the game and her club. In the Lionesses’ last friendly against the Czech Republic, she scored the winner in a 3-2 victory.

8- Beth England

After missing out on a spot in the 2019 Women's World Cup roster, England continued to show the Lionesses coach why that was a huge mistake. The 25-year-old striker has four goals and two assists in the first six games of the season and she won’t stop hitting the back of the net any time soon. With Chelsea announcing the signing of goal-scoring machine Sam Kerr last week, England now has to compete for her starting spot and prove to Emma Hayes that she deserves to play. Her England call up came a little later than anticipated, making her debut in August 2019 against Belgium. She scored her debut goal for the lionesses after being subbed on against Brazil. This was the only goal in their 2-1 defeat, which caused Lionesses’ fans to notice the talent that she holds. In November, Beth made her first start for England during their friendly against the Czech Republic. She contributed yet another goal during their 3-2 victory. It is honourable to mention that the striker managed to bag five goals in the first four games in the continental cup. This concludes the list I have compiled. Although it doesn’t do the league’s talent justice, it is a start. There are so many players that deserve recognition and I hope to expose more football-lovers to the Women's Super League and to support the women's game. Well, Chaeryeong couldn't exactly pretend she was fine with being third place. They hadn't been “hard-hitting” enough and it'd felt “lacking”. She was upset and wondered where they went wrong. Third place wasn't all that bad – middle field out of 5 groups, but the girl couldn't help it, it wasn't good enough, they had to do better next week. She wanted the group to place 2nd at the very least, preferably 1st and set her mind to making sure they would achieve that, because when she looked at the group in her mind, she knew they could do it.

Losing someone from the group also made her expression fall and her stomach uneasy. Whether she had been in much or very little contact didn't matter – they were a team and it felt wrong that one of them had to go. At the same time—she realised if she told anyone they'd probably give her an odd look and call her selfish—she was happy it wasn't her, because a bad premonition kept lurking in her stomach, ready to pop out and scream “I KNEW IT!” every second while waiting for the results. She also really liked all the ideas they'd gathered for the performance. The outfits were cute and she was excited as hell for the dance.

But even more than that, she was excited for the trc performance. She loved the theme, though she couldn't lie, she'd rather have been a demon than an angel. Yet everything they planned just made her so impatient to finally show the ceos and audience, she couldn't wait. She stayed longer and practised more. While they had a bit more time, there was also twice as much to prepare for. But this week, nothing could stop her.

Hyunggu started their introduction. “Shining bright,” he said, then all of them joined in to shout “we are Sirius!”. It tied into both performances. Nova with the galaxy theme and for the trc performance, in mythology, Sirius stood in connection to Hekate and Asteria. Hekate was a witch, which fit the demon theme and Asteria stood for “of the stars” or “the starry one”, which fitted the nova performance more and she was the goddess of falling stars, which then still suited the trc stage, again with the demon and fallen angel theme. So the girl really liked how everything was connected, but in addition to that, their performances also stood in connection to the past week. They were antidote then and intentionally mentioned poison in their mash-up.

The trc performance was first, though she would've preferred it the other way around, she found it to be a bit more effectful that way, but they'd manage to impress either way, the girl was confident. After their introduction the four got into position on their thrones to the sides of the stage. The girl's thrones were on the left side and white with added feathers to them as well. The boy's ones were much darker. At the beginning, the lights were all off, the stage completely black and a giddy feeling grew in the girl's stomach. Honestly she loved the ideas they had for this so, so much, the whole theme had her buzzing and wanting to show it to the world.

Finally the spotlights to reveal the four turned on. There were iron fence and gate, white roses would be timed to appear red through lights once the time came, just so later the tarnished metal of the fence could be revealed. There was a carpet leading to the gate of heaven and little deco items like a bowl of green apples, with one red apple.

The feathers on the chairs, once clinging to the two girls fell as they got up to walk to the gate of heaven. But they were stopped by the two demons, walking from their own thrones, but their black feathers were already on the floor. Chaeryeong had a curious expression on her face, just as a curious, enticed angel would.

Their outfits were pretty, angel-like with wings and crowns of white roses. Everything was thought through in so much detail, even their head pieces matched trc—triple crown. They boys were wearing dark red suits, giving a much less soft image. While she would've liked a demon suit, the girl's outfits were so pretty, she didn't mind being the angel here at all.

As soon as the four met centre stage, the pyrotechnics went off and Chaeryeong was so into the performance already, she didn't even flinch in surprise, which was a surprise in and of itself.

Everything was self-choreographed. Yeji began the song and Chaeryeong was again noticing how beautiful her voice was. Hyunggu soon followed after and the girl got ready for her first lines.

The girl had never been in love, barely ever had crushes. But she'd always been good at acting out the emotions, imagining how it could feel like. Her rap skills had improved so much after the last few weeks, however this would end, she'd learned so many new things, that alone made the whole ordeal of many hard weeks worth it. She smoothly flowed through her rap part, enjoying the dance as well and the two girls were handed red roses as she mentioned the small gifts. But they threw them aside. Her rap moved on to Minho's, who did a move from myname, further tying the performances together. His rap impressed her, just as the vocals of the other two did.

She was completely drawn into the performance, playing her part, expressions fitting like she'd been taught by Doyeon and Jinsoul, who she hoped would look on this performance with pride whenever they would be able to.

They play of good and bad continued, flames flaring up with every mention of “fire”, but especially through “playing with fire”. The girls avoided the red apples, unbeknownst to them though, the poison was in the roses they earlier tossed, a dark omen. Every interaction and they fell over to the other side a bit more, their wings slowly destroyed, dirtied as they're losing feathers, which would eventually have to result in them falling completely.

Her next lines arrive much too fast for her liking, wanting the performance to never end, unlike usual where she couldn't wait to show her rap skills. She moved smoothly, her face mirroring the emotions of the words spoken. They were in too deep, floating deeper and deeper, enticed by the evil that was hidden as a promise of love.

The flames grew with the end of each of her two last lines and she put her all into the dance, enjoying the last few moments of the performance. By now their flower-crowns were taken away by the demons and their wings barely held up. The demons revealed themselves as what they truly were and what they'd done. Crowns of black roses found their way onto the girl's heads and the gate revealed itself for what it was: their path to damnation, the gate to hell. True to the lyrics, they've been taken over by evil and there was no way back now.

She swayed to the beat as effortlessly as ever and once the last note faded and they broke their ending position, then bowing, Chae felt tears shoot up into her eyes. The girl blinked them away quickly—this wasn't the end just yet and she hoped it had looked as enticing, as she felt lost in the performance.

Waiting for their second performance, the girl continuously moved, whether she walked, her hand fidgeted with something or something else, she was itching to be on stage again. Minho had done a great job with the mash-up for the performance and she'd come to like it a lot, even though she usually wasn't the biggest fan of mash-ups. But now she had to get her head in the game, going through the choreography and lyrics a few more times, to calm herself down.

They were called for their 2nd performance and she was excited to show a different image. It was like a throwback to before everything happened in their first performance, like a look at a hopeful past. They were wearing cute school uniforms and had desks set up. Eight backup dancers were included to make the stage look less empty, for impact. All twelve of them had a desk. Though no one could see that just yet as they started out with an all black stage again.

Their intro message was “our love is in the stars”, changed from the original to fit their team and instead of falling leaves, there were stars. The intro started to play and black light was added, turning on and off, making their white shirts and shoes pop out.

Minho was right at the front, then Hyunggu and after him Yeji, who mimicked loading a gun and shooting. The tables were turned and in what she found to be quite the impressive move, the girl jumped to run over three tables, before landing on the ground and dancing right away as centre. The intro ended with them running back towards the tables that were now flipped over by the background dancers, the desk's tops spelling their team name, “Sirius”.

They'd be the brightest stars tonight, just like Sirius, and they'd be the ones wearing the crown, she had no doubt the rest of the team was just as determined.

The background was pretty and summer-themed, which she thought easily evoked a good mood. She danced, loving this stage as well and gave her movements her all, so they would be as perfect as they could possibly be, no matter whether they had to be softer, rougher, fast or slow. While she put effort into looking as charming as possible in the previous performance, this gave her much more ability to “flirt” with the audience. Not having lines till later made this perfectly easier and she gave her best to stand out as much as she could—but of course not so much that it would seem as though she was doing her own thing or trying to overshadow whoever was currently in focus.

Her gaze was strong, but not scary and after having practised it a lot, found the cameras pretty easily. Unlike before, she was a lot more consciously aware of all that she was doing. Before, she did everything as practised to look how she was supposed to, when she was. She'd given strong gazes and all that, but it was different now, where she could pay attention to her surroundings in much more detail, just like she could pay attention to the others that much more. And once more she realised what strong a group they were, she was sure they could place first. That was not to say the other groups didn't have it in them, or to underestimate them. It was definitely a hard competition but she felt good, she couldn't imagine those emotions wouldn't carry out to those viewing. They'd worked well together, it should show.

Her first line came after a shared one, followed by one of Yeji that transitioned to her rap.

Her rap tied into their previous stage, her calm off-stage self long left behind, exchanged for a charisma

that first presented itself when the girl started dancing ages ago. Her rap was practised to as close as perfection as she could get. There was undoubtedly much left to learn in the world of rap for the girl, but with the help she'd gotten, there was no doubt she'd delivered.

The rest of the time flew by and she made a finger heart with one hand next to her leg. It was the last performance of her for the whole show and the realisation hit her hard. Once they made their way off the stage, she could feel an overwhelming emotion rush her her, that she couldn't even place. She was proud, sad, happy, adrenaline still rushing through her. Confidence was there as usual, but also the worry that it hadn't been as good as she'd hoped. Just like the song suggested, it was hard to breathe, like there was no air, as her chest raised and fell heavily.

She quietly patted her eyes dry, trying to keep the others from noticing, though she wasn't sure how well she succeeded. With hands that were so shaky, they didn't really go where she wanted them to, she squished her cheeks, doing her best to calm down and the young girl hoped they wouldn't draw the final results out too long. She'd been to dancing competitions before, but this really was something else. There was only hoping left now.

the first guiding question of the interview is how sunmi expects them to do. in truth, sunmi expects them to be ranked last again on song choices alone but she wouldn’t vocalise that much pessimism on television. especially because she’s a coach. she should expect the best for her team. even though she has certain thoughts about how this was going to turn out, she knows that there’s a certain level of expectation that the korean public has. she tries to phrase it more positively with a sprinkle of the truth. “truthfully i was a little worried hearing the songs but i think the mixes were done well. the performances are entertaining. the concepts were well thought out. they can give you a full story on their concepts. so i expect them to do well.”

not number one, definitely not number one. polaris missed that mark the second they ignored hyunbin’s critique of picking a dance that was too ambitious for them. 1004 was much worse than run. she could only imagine the flare of annoyance that would grace the ceo’s features. and to think that his own trainee and upcoming idols advocated for these contestants only for it to turn out this way....sunmi wouldn’t want it to turn out badly. the best they could hope for is somewhere in the middle. she doesn’t hope for last because that would be a steep drop for how a nova team did in season three. it would be a disgrace and embarrassment. but a part of her knows they probably would end up with more critiques and would miss out on first place.

“how did you feel about the rankings?” sunmi nodded. “like they were justified. polaris was lacking in terms of flare. i personally wasn’t the largest advocate for the ats song. i had suggested something else before the settled on run. but they had their minds set on it. we can only take it as a lesson and take our critiques to heart for our next performance.”

did they pay attention to any of their critiques?

no, polaris absolutely didn’t. sunmi keeps her expression pretty straight when she says, “i made sure to reiterate to them what they should be focusing on. i’d like to think they kept it in mind when deciding their performances to make an informed decision.”

if only to be able to address the question but not fully. that way she wouldn’t have to throw any of them under the bus. though it would probably be a question as to why they didn’t listen to anything told to them. but usually viewers don’t pay attention to that. there’s no way for the judges to see the footage prior to the episode airing either.

how did it go this week?

there was no need to give a summary of everything that happened this week. it was sure to be shown on the episode if it was “juicy” enough. sunmi doesn’t feel the need to nitpick at every single moment from this week. “they’re a group of hard workers. last week we trained them on how to tweak and hone their skills. i feel like they always keep those practises in mind because they’ve all improved. they’re good kids with good personalities and they know what’s at stake. no one is joking around here.”

they were pretty serious from beginning to end. this week took a little longer to settle on choices, so she heard, but it went relatively well. there’s no point in expressing that she wished she didn’t have to be away with activities or else she would have stopped them from a few of the song choices. what was done is done. however....

“i did feel a little bad that i was busier this week so i was gone for a couple of days. i know the other coaches did just fine but i still wish i was more available for those who needed me this past week.”

do you still think kenta doesn’t deserve to be on the nova team?

now it was time for sunmi to look a little more thoughtful. as of last week, she still wasn’t entirely convinced that kenta should be in the mgas at all. now though, after two weeks with the group, she feels like he matured a bit. he might be lacking in the performance front and probably should have been sent home earlier but he seemed to have been taking things more seriously. “i feel like since last week kenta has shown a more serious side to himself. up until now, he was taking it in stride like it was a joke. he didn’t seem as focused as expected but last week and this week included, kenta has changed. he offered some good ideas and is helpful to his team. he’s more mindful so i feel like he’s thinking more like a trainee now than just some kid on television.”

who of your team surprised you the most?

“probably yewon and kenta. kenta has been incredibly proactive recently and yewon keeps impressing me with how much she’s able to do.” it was as simple as that. yewon was incredibly diverse as a performer. even though she wasn’t a singer, she was a team player, knowing that some of her centre parts would be a little more focused on her dancing capabilities as well as shouldering the rap verses as well. she was dedicated and sunmi thinks she would fit in the most in nova of all the people on the team. “yewon hasn’t stopped impressing me since i started watching the show. i think she’s aware of her strengths and has a clear understanding of her capabilities.”

“i feel like it took a little longer for it to kick in for kenta but he’s applying himself so much better when it comes to discussions and suggestions. i think he’s grown up a lot in the last two weeks. i’m certainly surprised with him because i went from not even thinking he should be on the team to feeling as though this is exactly what he needed so he could grow.”

do you have any hopes or wishes for your team?

“i just hope for them to do well and i pray that their performance goes without a problem.” she crosses her fingers and smiles.
