Tomio Aoki in A Story of Floating Weeds (Yasujiro Ozu, 1934)

This is the first, silent version of a film that Ozu remade with sound and in color in 1959, when it was released as Floating Weeds. Yes, 1934 is late to be making silent films, but Ozu was following the lead of the Japanese film industry, which didn't switch to sound until 1931 -- and Ozu waited till 1936 to make a talkie. Takeshi Sakamoto plays Kihachi, the head of a troupe of traveling players who find themselves in a village where Kihachi has a former mistress, Otsune (Choko Iida), with whom he had a son, Shinkichi (Koji Mitsui). The now almost-grown son has always known Kihachi as "Uncle," because Kihachi has kept his parentage secret, not wanting him to follow in his footsteps as an actor. But when Otaka (Rieko Yagumo), an actress in the troupe and Kihachi's most recent mistress, discovers the secret, she decides to take revenge by asking a younger actress, Otoki (Yoshiko Tsubouchi), to seduce Shinkichi. The revenge backfires when Otoki falls in love with the young man. As usual, Ozu's sympathetic view of human relationships carries the film, giving depth to the somewhat slight story. And the glimpses of the world of the traveling players is both fascinating and funny. The lovely cinematography is by Hideo Shigehara, who filmed and sometimes edited many of Ozu's pre-war movies.

AND OKAY so this is where the manga ends. Kind of? Volume 1 ends. However idk if a volume 2 exists and if it does i haven't found any English translation. Mangadex has marked this as completed so im gonna treat it as such as im not too invested in the story. We are left with questions still and this is the last panel of them walking down the hallway!

So I guess Hajime Ohara is part of Kongo now. I can’t keep up with the changes in that stable anymore. YO-HEY comes good for Ohara’s old partner Kotoge, as they now fill the vacant junior tag belts. Hope this reign lasts more than a week, given the vacations of the belts the last month. One day BIG TANK Yoshiki Inamura will beat Takashi Sugiura. Super Crazy does not get to hold two promotions’ junior titles in the span of a couple of months. Masao Inoue returned to the ring in an inter-Funky-Express match.

Naruki Doi’s Unit With No Name gets a good prelude win over Natural Vibes, as we head for that Open The Triangle Gate match, also on 3/5/2022.

HYO gets another one over on Eita, the man he deposed to turn R.E.D. into Z-Brats. In other Z-Brats goings on, after a week or so of Big Boss Shimizu beating HYO in prelude matches, and getting a direct win over KAI, now Z-Brats is starting to get one over on Shimizu, first with KAI interfering to cause Shimizu’s loss to Jason Lee on Sunday, and now a time limit draw in the opener to add some intrigue to the KAI v. Shimizu Open The Dream Gate title defense that is coming 3/6/2022 in Osaka.

The Truth Gate 2022 tour wraps up Saturday in Tsushima, and on Sunday with another streamed show from Kobe.

The COVID-19 issues for DDT continue, as Hideki Okatani has now tested positive as well. Eruption are now effectively out of the tournament – their match that was to take place today v. Yuji Hino & Yukio Naya is a forfeit, and due to Kazuki Hirata being out, the Eruption v. Hirata & Shuji Kondo match for the Final on Saturday will be a double-forfeit. Neither team were in the running at this point as it was. So today’s Ultimate Tag League show had no actual Ultimate Tag League matches on it. Yuji Hino & Yukio Naya end the League with 4 points, not in the running for the Final as that will come down to Burning v. The 37KAMIINA on Sunday for A Block.

Crunchyroll, le novità in arrivo annunciate al Virtual Crunchyroll Expo

Anticipati altri sei nuovi anime in simulcast e aggiunti finalmente anche gli OVA di Food Wars!

Nel corso dell’edizione 2021 della Virtual Crunchyroll Expo sono state svelate alcune novità che entreranno a far parte del ricco catalogo anime della piattaforma. Partiamo subito con i nuovi simulcast confermati in vista delle prossime stagioni televisive.

OTTOBRE 2021

MUV LUV-ALTERNATIVE

Atteso adattamento del popolare terzo capitolo della trilogia sviluppata da Âge, che ha dato origine al celebre franchise sci-fi. Uscita in Giappone nel 2006, la visual novel è arrivata in Occidente solo da qualche anno, sbarcando per PC su Steam, tradotta in inglese.  

La storia del legame tra coloro che combattono in un mondo portato al suo limite. In uno degli innumerevoli universi paralleli che esistono nello spazio e nel tempo, l'umanità ha lottato per decenni un lunga guerra contro i BEETA, ostili invasori extraterrestri, usando delle macchine da guerra umanoidi chiamate Tactical Surface Fighters. È una storia di vita e di morte di un'umanità sull'orlo della sua estinzione...

La regia della serie è affidata a Yukio Nishimoto (The Galaxy Railways, Tsukiuta The Animation 2), mentre la sceneggiatura è curata da Tatsuhiko Urahata (Baki, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere). Il character design è ad opera di Takuya Tani (Ms. Koizumi loves ramen noodles, Pandora in the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn) e le musiche sono composte da Evan Call (Schwarzes Marken, Violet Evergarden). L’adattamento è prodotto dagli studi FLAGSHIP LINE, YUMETA COMPANY (My Sweet Tyrant, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna) e GRAPHINICA (Record of Ragnarok, Hello World),

THE FARAWAY PALADIN

Serie animata tratta dalla light novel fantasy dal titolo “Saihate no Paladin”, scritta da Kanata Yanagino e illustrata da Kususaga Rin, giunta attualmente al 4° volume, che ha ispirato anche una versione manga curata da Mutsumi Okuhashi (Hai to Gensou no Grimgar).

In una città in rovina popolata dai morti, lontana dalla civiltà, vive un ragazzino umano chiamato Will. È stato cresciuto da tre non morti: l'eroico guerriero scheletro chiamato Blood, la mummia sacerdotessa chiamata Mary e il mago spettrale chiamato Gus. I tre hanno insegnato al ragazzo ciò che sanno e gli hanno dato tutto il loro amore.

Il ragazzo inizia un giorno a chiedersi: "Chi sono?". Will inizierà a scoprire i misteri dei non morti di questa città. Comprenderà l'amore e la pietà degli dei buoni, ma anche la paranoia e la follia di quelli malvagi. E una volta imparato tutto ciò, si cimenterà nella via che porta a divenire paladini.

L’anime è in produzione presso lo studio CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUND ENTERTAINMENT (Hatena Illusion, Tsukiuta The Animation 2) ed è diretto da Yuu Nobuta (High School Fleet, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear) e sceneggiato da Tatsuya Takahashi (I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, Eromanga Sensei). Il design dei personaggi è invece affidato a Koji Haneda (Scared Rider Xechs, Yarichin Bitch-bu).

WORLD'S END HAREM

Serie animata tratta dal manga ecchi sci-fi, scritto da Link e disegnato da Kotaro Shono, edito in Italia da J-POP Manga e conclusosi con il 12° volumetto.

Ambientato nel futuro prossimo, a Tokyo nel 2040. Reito, un ragazzo che soffre di una malattia incurabile, vuole incontrare di nuovo la sua amica d'infanzia Erisa, decide poi di ibernasi per curarla dalla sua malattia. Quando si risveglia cinque anni dopo, nel mondo è in atto una pesante trasformazione. Il MK (Male Killer), virus ha ucciso il 99,9% degli uomini del pianeta. Questo rende il mondo un harem composto da 5 milioni di donne per ogni 5 uomini.

Solo 5 uomini, "Number" sono resistenti al virus MK. Uno di loro è Reito che deve "accoppiarsi" per il bene di ciò che resta dell'umanità. Lo aspetta una vita da harem in questo mondo pandemico. Nello stesso momento, Reito resta coinvolto in una cospirazione globale. Potrà resistere alla tentazione di salvare il mondo?

L’adattamento è in lavorazione presso STUDIO GOKUMI e AXSIZ (Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood, Seiren) e alla regia troviamo Yuu Nobuta (High School Fleet, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear), mentre le sceneggiatura sta venendo curata da Tatsuya Takahashi (Domestic Girlfriend, Val x Love). Il character design è ad opera di Masaru Koseki (Happiness!, Demon King Daimao) e le musiche per la colonna sonora sono invece composte da Shigenobu Ookawa (Kurage no Shokudou, Miss Monochrome).

THE STRONGEST SAGE WITH THE WEAKEST CREAST

Serie animata basata sulla light novel fantasy di Shinkoshoto, dal titolo “Shikkakumon no Saikyou Kenja”, giunta attualmente al 10° volume in patria. Dal 2017 ne viene serializzata online anche una versione manga, disegnata da Kansho e Hyoko.

La sua forza è limitata dallo stemma con cui è nato, Mathias il più potente saggio del mondo, decide che reincarnarsi è necessario per ottenere una potenza inarrivabile. Dopo la sua rinascita, il ragazzino scopre di essere nato con lo stemma perfetto per essere il combattente magico perfetto, alla prima prova! Sfortunatamente, il mondo in cui è nato ha degli standard atrocemente bassi in quanto a magia e tutti pensano che sia destinato al fallimento. Ora sta a lui provare quanto tutti sbaglino... alla maniera del saggio più potente del mondo!

L’adattamento è diretto da Noriaki Akitaya (Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood, ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me?) e sceneggiato da Hiroki Uchida (Gamers!, Merc Storia: Mukiryoku no Shounen to Bin no Naka no Shoujo). Il tutto sta venendo prodotto presso lo studio J.C.STAFF (DaMachi, Food Wars! SKELETON KNIGHT IN ANOTHER WORLD

Serie animata basata sulla light novel fantasy isekai dal titolo “Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu”, scritta da Enki Hakari e illustrata da KeG. L’opera ha debuttato nel 2014 e ad ora conta nove volumi publicati in Giappone. Dal 2017 ne viene serializzata online una versione manga, disegnata da Akira Sawano.

Un giorno, un ragazzo si è addormentato giocando a un videogioco... e quando si è svegliato si è trovato in un mondo di gioco nei panni di uno scheletro! Dotato delle armi poderose e dell'armatura del suo avatar, ma intrappolato nell'aspetto terrificante di uno scheletro, Arc si trova in un nuovo e fantastico mondo. Tutte le sue speranze di vivere una vita tranquilla sono dunque svanite, dopo l'incontro con una bellissima guerriera elfa che lo ha posto su una strada irta d'avventure e conflitti.

L’anime è in lavorazione presso gli studi STUDIO KAI (Super Cub, Uma Musume: Pretty Derby - Season 2) e HORNETS (Somali and the Forest Spirit). Alla regia c’è Katsumi Ono (Senki Zesshou Symphogear XV, Girly Air Force) e la sceneggiatura è invece in mano a Takeshi Kikuchi (Ragnastrike Angels). Il character design è ad opera di Tooru Imanishi (WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?, Super Cub), mentre le musiche sono composte da Eba (sigla di testa di No Game No Life, Wizard Barristers: Benmashi Cecil) e Tsubasa Itou (Princess Connect! Re:Dive, Iwa Kakeru! Sport Climbing Girls).

LOVE OF KILL

L’action love story si basa sul manga “Koroshi Ai” di Fe, lanciato nel 2015 in Giappone e giunto attualmente al 12° volumetto.

La silenziosa e stoica Chateau Dankworth è una cacciatrice di taglie. Il suo obiettivo: Son Ryang-ha, un famigerato assassino noto per aver ucciso 18 ufficiali di alto rango in una sola notte. Ancora oggi, i suoi omicidi rimangono rapidi, efficienti e sanguinosi. Tuttavia, dopo che Son Ryang-ha riesce a sopraffare Chateau nel loro primo incontro, lui le rivela di essere sulle sue tracce da tempo. Il suo obbiettivo: il cuore della donna.

I tentativi di Son Ryang-ha di attirare le attenzioni di Chateau sono a dir poco unici. Le offre in dono i suoi attuali obiettivi, già legati e malconci, facendo di tutto per passare più tempo assieme. Con riluttanza, Chateau asseconda la sua corte, e così inizia il gioco d'amore fra i due assassini.

Per l’adattamento, PLATINUM VISION (Devils’ Line, Kono Oto Tomare! Sounds of Life) ha riunito lo staff principale dietro alla serie di “Dr. Ramune: Mysterious Disease Specialist” (che potete già vedere sempre su Crunchyroll).

Alla regia dunque troviamo Hideaki Oba (The Fate of Arad), mentre la sceneggiatura sta venendo curata da Ayumu Hisao (Kono Oto Tomare! Sounds of Life, Devils’ Line). Il character design è ad opera di Youko Satou (Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi, Saiyuki Reload Blast) e la colonna sonora è firmata da Kei Yoshikawa (Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, SaiKano: Another Love Song).

Ricordiamo, inoltre, che nel corso delle settimane passate, la piattaforma ha anticipato l’arrivo sempre nei prossimi mesi anche di altri titoli molto attesi:

Durante l’evento c’è stato spazio anche per l’annuncio di qualche recupero.

Monument of Liberty This monument is located in Ulcinj and is called by locals both “Spomenik Pobjede" and “Përmendorja e Lirisë" which can be translated to “Monument of Liberty". It was designed by artist Miodrag Živković and architect  Đorđe Zloković. The construction of the monument ended in 1985. It is a roughly 12m tall and 15m wide monument. Materials used for the construction of this old monument were poured concrete and rebar. The condition is rather poor and the monument site has been continuously neglected over the years.

Different sources relate the monument as either a commemoration site for fallen fighters and civilian victims during the National Liberation War or a tribute to pilots and airmen and their efforts during the war.

The monument now stands alone on top of a hill overlooking Mala Plaza, but the plans for it were of great size. It was supposed to be expanded into a complex with the monument at its centre. Sadly the plans were never acted upon post the construction of the monument itself. There was some controversy about the plot on which it would be built as the land belonged to Albanian property owners. Today,  Spomenik is neglected with graffiti on every reachable side and with overgrown foliage around it. Many of the graffiti are nationalist Serbian symbols. The locals used the free space around it to build a basketball hoop which is the only bigger significance the monument has. The future of the monument is unclear as there has been taken little to no action to prevent vandalism and to create a tourist attraction out of Spomenik.

Spomenik Pobjede Ovaj spomenik se nalazi u Ulcinju, a mještani ga nazivaju i “Spomenik Pobjede” i “Permendorja e Lirise” koji se mogu prevesti kao “Spomenik slobode”, a projektovali su ga umjetnik Miodrag Živković i arhitekt Đorđe Zloković. I to je otprilike 12 m visok i 15 m širok spomenik. Materijali koji su korišteni za izgradnju ovog starog spomenika izliveni su betonom i armaturom, stanje je prilično loše, a spomenik se kontinuirano zanemarivao tokom godina.

Različiti izvori citiraju spomenik kao mjesto za komemoraciju poginulih boraca i civilnih žrtava za vrijeme NOB-a ili kao počast pilotima i zrakoplovacima i njihovim naporima tokom rata.

Spomenik sada stoji sam na vrhu brda iznad Male Plaze i dalji planovi za spomenik su bili veliki. Trebalo je da se proširi u kompleks sa spomenikom u njegovom centru. Nažalost, planovi nikada nisu otišli dalje od izgradnje samog spomenika. Bilo je nekih nesuglasica oko parcele na kojoj će biti izgrađen jer je zemljište pripadalo albanskim vlasnicima. Danas je Spomenik zapostavljen grafitima na svakoj pristupačnoj strani i obrastao lišćem. Mnogi grafiti su nacionalistički srpski simboli. Mještani su na slobodnom prostoru oko njega izgradili koš i to je jedina bitnija stvar za koju se koristi. Budućnost spomenika je nejasna, jer je malo preduzeto da se spriječi vandalizam i da se stvori od njega stvori turistička atrakcija.

Monumenti tani qëndron vetëm në majë të një kodre me pamje në Plazhë të Vogël, por planet për të ishin të një rëndësie madhështore. Supozohet se duhej të zgjerohej në një kompleks me monumentin në qendër të tij. Mjerisht, planet nuk u kryen asnjëherë pas ndërtimit të vetë monumentit. Kishte disa polemika rreth ngastrës në të cilën do të ndërtohej, pasi toka i takonte pronarëve shqiptarë. Sot, Përmendorja është lënë pas dore me mbishkrime në çdo anë të arritshme dhe me gjelbërim rreth tij. Shumë prej grafiteve janë simbole nacionaliste serbe. Vendasit përdorën hapësirën e lirë rreth saj për të ndërtuar një kosh basketbolli e cila është e vetmja rëndësi më e madhe që ka monumenti. E ardhmja e monumentit është e paqartë, pasi nuk është ndërmarrë shumë veprim për të parandaluar vandalizmin dhe për të krijuar një atraksion turistik nga Përmendorja.

Monument der Freiheit Dieses Monument befindet sich in Ulcinj und wird von den Einheimischen “Spomenik Pobjede” und “Përmendorja e Lirisë” genannt, was als “Monument der Freiheit” übersetzt werden kann. Es wurde von dem Künstler Miodrag Živković und dem Architekten Đorđe Zloković entworfen. Es ist ein ca. 12 m hohes und 15 m breites Denkmal. Die für den Bau des alten Denkmals verwendeten Materialien wurden aus Beton und Betonstahl gegossen, der Zustand ist eher schlecht und die Denkmalstätte wurde im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder vernachlässigt.

Verschiedene Quellen beziehen sich auf das Denkmal als Gedenkstätte für gefallene Kämpfer und zivile Opfer während des Nationalen Befreiungskriegs oder als Tribut an Piloten und Flieger sowie deren Bemühungen während des Krieges.

Das Denkmal steht heute allein auf einem Hügel mit Blick auf den kleinen Strand Mala Plaza, aber die Pläne dafür waren damals groß. Es sollte zu einem Komplex mit dem Denkmal in der Mitte erweitert werden. Leider wurden die Pläne nie nach dem Bau des Denkmals umgesetzt. Es gab einige Kontroversen über das Grundstück, auf dem es gebaut werden sollte, da das Land albanischen Besitzern gehörte. Heute sieht man auf dem Spomenik Graffiti auf jeder erreichbaren Seite und von Unkraut bewachsen. Viele der Graffiti sind nationalistische serbische Symbole. Die Einheimischen nutzten den freien Platz, um einen Basketballkorb zu bauen, der die einzig größere Bedeutung des Denkmals ist. Die Zukunft des Denkmals ist unklar, da wenig oder gar nichts unternommen wurde, um Vandalismus zu verhindern und aus Spomenik eine Touristenattraktion zu schaffen.

Japan names squad for World Cup qualifiers

TOKYO

Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu warned his players to get on the same page straight away after naming his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Australia on Tuesday.

Japan travel to Jeddah to face the Saudis on October 8 before taking on Australia in Saitama four days later, having made a mixed start to their Group B campaign.

Moriyasu's side slumped to a shock 1-0 opening home defeat to Oman earlier this month, before beating China 1-0 in an away match played in Doha because of the pandemic.

Moriyasu blamed the Oman loss on his players' inability to adapt quickly to his team after spending time with their club sides.

"We don't have much time, but the players need to switch from what they do with their clubs and get their heads around our team concept," the manager said. "We didn't do that last time and we have to make sure we sort that out."

Moriyasu named a 25-man squad featuring only five home-based players, with star midfielder Takefusa Kubo of Spanish side Real Mallorca missing through injury.

New Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has impressed since joining the Gunners from Bologna in the summer, was included alongside Liverpool attacker Takumi Minamino.

Both Saudi Arabia and Australia have taken maximum points from their opening two games in Group B, and Moriyasu is wary of facing the Saudis in the heat of Jeddah.

"Europe and Japan are quite cool at the moment, so it will be difficult playing in hot conditions in Saudi Arabia," he said.

"We have to think about how to play in that heat."

No belts changed hands on this night. Ashino v. Honda was a Last Man Standing match, which I don’t think they announced beforehand. Oh well. Tatsumi Fujinami, his son LEONA and Mitsuya Nagai dropped by from Dradition.

The next 2022 Dream Power Series event is on Sunday from Saitama. Two title matches are on that show too, but in the undercard.

I’m a little miffed in a way that Hiromu didn’t get the win over his stablemate, but then again, his stablemate pretty much carried the promotion last year, and it’s about time he gets recognized for that. I’m also a little disappointed in a weird way that Ospreay didn’t go over Sabre; it’s not out of any love for Ospreay, but Shingo deserved to finally get a big win over him, after last year’s defeats, and not being able to defend the IWGP World Heavyweight title against the pretender. Seems a little backwards booking-wise. Shingo v. Sabre will be good regardless.

Hiroshi Tanahashi made the post-match save against the combined Guerrillas of Destiny / Team Six Or Nine tandem, after the Bullet Club beat them down in defeat. Post-match, Tama Tonga said he was a little annoyed that he had to be saved by Tana when before GoD were the ones delivering the beatdowns. But hey, more character and story development eh?

NJPW is off until Saturday, when the semi-finals and Finals take place at Osaka-jo Hall. If you are watching the current sumo basho in Osaka, don’t be surprised if you see Kazuchika Okada show up on one of the final days as it’s wrapping up. Okada was sighted at the Osaka basho (which always takes place in March) in 2018 and 2019, however this is the first running of this basho in Osaka since the pandemic, as March 2020 was cancelled ourright, and March 2021 was held in Ryogoku Kokugikan. Regardless, here’s the lineups for the weekend tour-ender.

Dragon Gate

The Glorious Gate 2022 tour continued this week. Today’s show was the homecoming for Dragon Dia, with a special title match main event added on Sunday for that occasion. That show was not streamed live, but will be on Dragon Gate Network soon.

Dia wins in his hometown, as SB KENTo makes a challenge to Dia for his Open The Brave Gate title. That match has now been set for Dead Or Alive 2022, on 5/5/2022. This also is the first match since the formation of Gold Class that has not seen Naruki Doi in the match. Not for nothing, Jason Lee & Ho Ho Lun as a tandem did pretty good on these two shows. It may not be a long lasting thing, but could be fun while it lasts?

DG take tomorrow off, and resume on Thursday in Tottori.

The one title not being defended at Ryogoku gets a spotlight here. Giulia & Syuri declared that this was the final teamup of AliKaba (Alto Livello KABALIWAN), and that they will go their separate ways as partners, as they clash in the main event on Saturday. Apparently Syuri plans to have a bodyguard in her employ soon, whomever that might be, to Ryogoku. So there may be some changes afoot for DdM.

This weekend will be the two Sumo Hall supercards, that have a ton of title matches, the return of KAIRI, and Prominence make appearances too.

2AW ran a PPV event from Korakuen Hall yesterday, the main event of which saw Kengo Mashimo beat friend of the blog Shigehiro Irie for the 2AW Openweight title, the former Champion of Strongest-K back when the company was Kaientai Dojo. Mashimo is the 6th champion, ending Irie’s reign at 144 days with three successful defenses prior to yesterday.

Marvelous, Kyushu Pro, Dove, BURST, PURE-J, Team DERA, and P.P.P. ran shows the last couple of days as well.

Back Thursday, although it seems like the only shows to report will be NOAH and Dragon Gate. Which, you know, is OK.
