The Roridula plant in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve of South Africa is a sticky trap for most insects, but does not digest them. Another beetle with slippery feet will eat them, poop, and the plant uses the phosphorus, essentially utilizing the beetle as a mobile digestion unit so it does not need to invest in making enzymes and acid.

Roridulas eat shit.

Betty‘s Bay ist eine Überraschung. Eigentlich durchaus schon in der Nachbarschaft von Kapstadt gelegen, merkt man hier wenig von der Großstadt. Eine aktive Gemeinschaft von Naturschützern kämpft hier seit Jahren erfolgreich gegen Müll, Überbauung, Rodung des hier heimischen Fynbos und für die Entfernung invasiver Arten. Das nahe gelegene Kogelberg Nature Reserve enthält laut Wikipedia „eine größere pflanzliche Artenvielfalt pro Flächeneinheit als irgendwo sonst auf der Welt“. Dazu eine spektakuläre Küste, und uns ist schnell klar: Hier bleiben wir ein paar Tage.
