It's official! Here are the prompts for every day of FFXV Girls Week, which will run from September 13th through the 19th. All info (including guidelines and FAQ) can be found on the event's carrd, which I will transcribe the link to with spaces around the points to elude that good, good algorithm: ffxvgirlsweek2021 . carrd . co
This is a casual, low-stress event, so don't sweat it if you can't participate every day or are already busy that week! Using the #FFXVGirlsWeek hashtag will allow others to find your work, even after the fact. If you have any questions after reading over the event guidelines, please feel free to DM me here or over on Twitter.

Column: Favorite Rap Mixtapes of October 2018
With a cascade of releases spewing from the likes of DatPiff, LiveMixtapes, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud, it can be difficult to keep up with the overbearing yet increasingly vital mixtape game. In this column, we aim to immerse ourselves in this hyper-prolific world and share our favorite releases each month. The focus will primarily be on rap mixtapes — loosely defined here as free (or sometimes free-to-stream) digital releases — but we’ll keep things loose enough to branch out if/when we feel it necessary. (Check out last month’s installment here.) Here at Tiny Mix Tapes, mixtapes are like Halloween handouts, which is to say we recommend continual and regular consumption of sweets, sours, and suckers balanced by physical activities including but not limited to picking and carving, taking long walks, and watching so many scary movies it becomes physically tasking. To wit, my list for the month so far includes: The Omen (1976), Damien: Omen II (1978), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981), Season of the Witch (1972), The Man in the Orange Jacket (2014), Daughter of Horror (1955), Daybreakers (2009), Nightmare City (1980), Fear X (2003), The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976), Shock (1946), Shock (1977), The Stuff (1985), Santa Sangre (1989), Neon Demon (2016), The Lost Boys (1987), and The Skeleton Key (2005). Therein, as below, audiences can discover numerous tricks and treats. It is, of course, our privilege to help pass along both as they’re equally essential, like ODB would say, “for the children.” And speaking of the little ones, let us not gloss over this month without acknowledging that it somehow brought out releases by no less than seven (!) established “Lil” rappers: B, Baby, Gnar, Jay So Icy, Mosey, Tracy and Xelly. “The horror!” –Samuel Diamond --- Illingsworth - You’re No Fun [DOWNLOAD/STREAM] Swerve past the skeptics and you’ll find that there still are scythe-tongued rappers and producers beholden to the unseen funk. Although rapper-producers are not rare, there are few today who manage such a fluid blend of sway and spitfire as my latest chiropractor, the Detroit-bred Illingsworth. While known mostly for his beats, the plunderer can kick some nerdy flex raps too; he was nonchalantly sipping on lemonade in a pirate’s fit, while you were busy teething on cockroaches. On his latest opal with Mello Music Group, You’re No Fun, Illingsworth’s pearly bounce is as live as ever. The lasting sapphire in the mix might just be “Wind (No Clues),” a “Love’s Gonna Get’cha”-esque ode to a young have-not, searching for a path where shards of systemic violence won’t sink into the soles. In the grubby fists of a lesser MC, the concept might ring out as corny. But in the studious grasp of Illingsworth, it feels as if the ghosts of SV sprinkled steez over construction gravel to help the whole damn thing glisten. –Cirrus Slump --- Kodie Shane - Stay Tuned … [STREAM] Some two years after stealing the show on the Sailing Team’s “All In,” Kodie Shane’s just about ready for her close-up. Young Heartthrob, her full-length debut, drops early November, meaning that Stay Tuned … is the last in a long line of EPs by which she has built a fanbase and a reputation, (mostly) escaping Lil Yachty’s shadow and establishing herself as an artist who deserves a spotlight of her own. Packed front-to-back with brand-name features, Stay Tuned … scans as a set of songs too pedestrian for the album but too expensive to discard entirely, less interesting for Rich the Kid’s continued interrogation of the phrase “dat way!” than for the promising glimpse it provides into Shane’s musical development since last year’s Back From the Future. I can’t imagine listening to this once Young Heartthrob is out, but I won’t be listening to anything else until then. –Corrigan B. --- MihTy - MihTy [STREAM] Here you have it folks: the long-rumored, widely-anticipated eponymous collab between the foremost crooners in hip-hop. That’s right — Jeremih and Ty Dolla $ign have teamed up in true Rhythm-and-Blues Brothers fashion to give us MihTy, which apparently might have been completed as far back as 2017?? The original release was supposed to come August 2018, but, as happens so often these days, the drop date was pushed back to October. So, here we are! Dolla and ‘Mih apparently churned out some 60 songs in the studio, then picked out these 11 from said batch, which explains why this project doesn’t hit me as incredibly cohesive or focused on a particular idea, aside from, of course, romance, sex, and various forms of decadence. But if you know these two at all, that shouldn’t surprise you, and perhaps all that intimacy is exactly why you (and I) listen. It’s a solid and varied tape, with a good list of producers (exec. produced by Hitmaka, with appearances by Go Grizzly, Keyz, et al.) and suave harmonies. In a most satisfying way, it’s the tape I’d expect from the two — a wonderfully romantic, melodic, and smooth-hip-hop-R&B ditty to cuddle up with as the weather gets colder. –Alex Brown --- Bambu - Exrcising A Demon | Article 1 | A Few Left [DOWNLOAD/STREAM] Filipino-American California MC Bambu has been kicking bloody street soliloquies as far back as the early 2000s and even released a critically acclaimed full-length collaboration with L.A. rap royalty’s DJ Muggs in 2010. However, if there’s ever been a moment better suited for this particular audio document, it must have occurred in some alternate timeline, because Exrcising A Demon | Article 1 | A Few Left arrives at a juncture that demands more than ever for stories of American immigrants and their children and the struggles they share to be told plainly, without glorification, political comment, or other modes of curated re-contextualization. The truth, like humanity, is brutal, war-torn even, but above all else, necessary. And if this release is truly the first in a five-part series, as the Bandcamp page describes, then Bambu and OJ The Producer have set the bar incredibly high for themselves out the gate. Clearly, though, this is a matter of both exercising and exorcising, show-and-prove a given. –Samuel Diamond --- Shy Glizzy - Fully Loaded [STREAM] For a couple years now, the Washington Wizards have stood pat in free agency, keeping their roster’s core intact in order to develop their existing players rather than compromising their identity in pursuit of new ones. Their horrific start to the current season aside, it’s worked pretty well; the John Wall era has been one of consistent success, salad days not only for Wall, but also for a host of young stars under his tutelage: Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, and most recently Kelly Oubre. Yet in their consistency, the Wizards have raised questions about untapped potential, about complacency in the face of the consistently “pretty good,” and about who is really to blame for a series of failed attempts to integrate new play styles and personalities. Luckily, rap isn’t basketball. Probably. –Corrigan B. --- Lil B - Options [STREAM] –Lovebug --- Gangsta Boo & BeatKing - Underground Cassette Tape Music Vol. 2 [STREAM] Being a consumer of contemporary “rap” music in 2018 without recognizing Gangsta Boo is a privilege. As a member of Three 6 Mafia, she helped collapse geographical and aesthetic distinctions between Southern rap, experimental horrorcore, and radio music without burying Memphis signifiers in common ground. Her new mixtape with Houston-hailing BeatKing is a conservation of both artists’ distinct regional styles, revealing by way of phonogeographical survey just how deep trap’s roots go. Fortunately, Underground Cassette Tape Music Vol. 2 is also a banger in its own right, reminding Migos fans why this historical primrose path was worth nourishing and following. Plus, remember Paul Wall, Danny Brown, and RiFF RAFF? They’re all on this, too. It’s a scary good time, so fly that you won’t even remember they’ve been doing this since before I could talk. If there ever were a laurel-draped whip, this whole crew has scrapped it for a brand new ride. And it bumps as hard as everything before it. –Jazz Scott --- D Savage - D Phoenix [STREAM] I’m not entirely sure where D Savage came from, but “a neural network trained on 10,000 Soundcloud rappers” isn’t out of the question. Yet amidst opaque mythology — “3900,” “2700,” and a dozen variations of “Phoenix” reappear endlessly across songs and IG captions — and thoroughly ambiguous authorship, there’s an undeniable grasp of melody that refuses to be ignored. As often as not, it’s a mere moment; “What You Want” justifies its existence on the strength of half a hook alone. And that’s more than enough: with tracks rarely exceeding two minutes, D Savage’s best work is so immediate that it can’t even begin to wear out its welcome before its time to rewind. There’s little here that warrants repeated listens, but what sticks will be looping in my mind for months on end. –Corrigan B. http://j.mp/2RmZRpo

Top 10 Producers of the Year
10) Danny Wolf
Danny Wolf is a Mexican producer that moved to Atlanta, Georgia at a young age. While he was there, he quickly learned English during his high school years and once out of high school he decided to fully dedicate himself to his music and his brand. His mother always taught him entrepreneurship skills that helped him sell himself and his music to others. Although his passion was producing, he started interning and shooting videos for mixtape and music video host Mixtape Kitchen. Later on he would join street music mogul Hoodrich Entertainment and work with the likes of ILoveMakonnen, Hoodrich Pablo Juan, and Ugly God. Specifically, 2017 was a big year for the young platinum producer. Him and Hoodrich Pablo Juan put out the joint album “Hoodrich Wolf” featuring the song Zombamafoo. The song would later go on to be remixed, accompanied by a Lil Uzi Vert feature. Danny Wolf would go on to produce for the entire Hoodrich team of rappers such as Drugrxch Hect, Drugrxch Peso, Drugrxch Paco, Larry League, and more. His biggest accomplishment so far though has been to produce Ugly God’s platinum single “Water.” With that single, Danny Wolf shot Ugly God’s reach from an underground fanbase to the mainstream.
- Other notable productions include Lil Pump’s “Flex Like Ouu” and Hoodrich Pablo Juan’s “We Don’t Luv Em.”
9) Pi’erre Bourne
If you haven’t heard the signature catchphrase,”Ayo, pi’erre, you wanna come out here?” you’ve probably been living under a rock in 2017. Pi’erre Bourne was a military child growing up. He was born in Fort Riley, Kansas and would go on to move to Fort Jackson, South Carolina to Durham, North Carolina back to Columbia, South Carolina. His mother would send him to Queens, New York as much as possible to visit his grandmother and considers Queens his home. His music career started to pay off in Atlanta, Georgia though. He would make beats on a computer his uncles had given him at a young age and when he moved to go to engineering school he took it with him. While he was out there he would link up with K$upreme; a member of the Sailing Team (a crew of friends also involving Lil Yachty, JBan$2Turnt, Kodie Shane, and TheGoodPerry, formerly ‘Burberry Perry’). Pi’erre gave K$upreme a couple beats and later found out that Playboi Carti hopped on the ‘wokeuplikethis*’ beat. The two would get together and create one of his biggest hits to this day, ‘ Magnolia.’ The single received platinum certification from the RIAA with upwards of a million sells. He was a big influence towards the end of Playboi Carti’s self-titled debut album and he would see mainstream success afterwards.
- Other notable production credits include 6ix9ine’s “Gummo” and A$AP Mob’s “Blowin’ Minds.”
8) Tank God
Tank God is that type of producer who has an enormous potential to make hits, but just needs that one opportunity. That unexpected opportunity came when he stumbled upon Post Malone while visiting his friend, Christian Combs, in New York. Tank God was a collegiate at the University of Hartford before all the success, but has now gone on to sign with Sony/ATV. The deal came after Tank God’s unbelievable, extraordinary production for Post Malone’s 2x-platinum single “Rockstar.” The song was a result of a coincidence that the latter were in the same building at the same time and crossed paths in the hallway. Post Malone offered to hear Tank God’s beats and immediately wanted to record on the gloomy, hard-hitting beat. After that, everything else was history. The track would go on to break the record for most streams during a single week on all streaming services, get upwards of 2 million sells, garner a combined 80 million views of the audio and video on YouTube at the time of this post, and be the number one single in 16 countries (including the U.S, Canada, Australia, Norway, New Zeland, and the U.K). Tank has said that he has a lot more for us come 2018 and we cannot wait to hear more from him.
7) Murda Beatz
You already know that if Young Murda is on the beat, it’s not nice! The Ontario native has come up as one of the biggest producers in hip-hop in the last couple of years. Growing up loving hip-hop/rap Murda Beatz knew that he wasn’t going to be like everyone else because he was different. That state of mind helped him work hard on making a name for himself. All the hard work and sacrifice would pay off once he started working with PARTYNEXTDOOR and the Migos. His work with them would help him gain the attention of other rappers such as Drake, Travis $cott, 2 Chainz, Nicki Minaj, and other big names. This year was especially big for him as he would go on to drop three platinum singles. Travis Scott’s “Butterfly Effect,” and 2 Chainz’ “It’s a Vibe” and “4AM” had over 1 million sells each! That is definitely no small accomplishment and the 23-year old doesn’t seem to have plans of stopping there. We can expect to have more hits from Murda Beatz in 2018.
-Other notable production credits include Drake’s “Portland,” Nicki Minaj’s “No Frauds,” and Migos “MotorSport.”
6) TM88
TM88 is one of the original pioneers of the Atlanta trap music scene and has been in the rap game for awhile now. It is no surprise that TM88 makes it on our list of the top 10 producers of the year. His experience and knowledge around the boards show in what won the “Summer of the Song” award at the MTV VMA’s, “XO Tour Llif3.” The Lil Uzi Vert track was actually an old collaboration between TM88 and J.W Lucas that had been on TM88′s old computer. Due to him losing his charger at an airport while he was in Florida working with Gucci Mane, he had to resort to using that and a Beats Pill. He messed with the beat a little, and voila! The 4x platinum single was born once Lil Uzi hopped on it. That goes to show that you can make something out of nothing in unfortunate circumstances.
- Other notable production credits include Lil Pump’s “Lil Pump” tape and Smokepurpp’s “Deadstar” tape.
5) Bigheadonthebeat
Hailing from Los Angeles, California, but originally from Lancaster, California, we have Bigheadonthebeat, or Big Head. Bighead has been relevant in the underground music scene for awhile now, but it hasn’t been until early this year that he started making his way into the mainstream by working with the likes of Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, and Famous Dex. While that may be impressive, what we are truly impressed by is how big of an influence he was to making the underground scene, that a lot of people call Soundcloud rap, turn mainstream. Smokepurpp, Lil Tracy, and Unotheactivist are just a few people he was produced for that had significant success from his production. His biggest production influence comes from working with Lil Pump and Lil Peep. Songs like “Benz Truck Pt.2 and the GBC tape “Castles II” helped Lil Peep cross genres and reach rap fans as well. Lil Peep and BigHead helped revive emo-rap once again and it has changed the music scene, most likely, forever. His biggest influence this year though was on the out-of-nowhere, sensational “Gucci Gang.” The Lil Pump song has peaked at number 3 on the Billboard charts at the time of this post. That is amazing since it is not a radio-played song, but all its numbers come purely from streaming. Bigheadonthebeat is now becoming a highly sought-after producer by, both, already mainstream artists and upcoming artists. One thing is for sure, he is bringing the underground rap scene up with him.
4) Mike WiLL Made-It
Mike WiLL Made-It is another pioneer on our list of the modern Atlanta trap scene and a long-time producer of rap’s hottest beats . His style is as broad as his repertoire of hits produced this year. Migos, Rae Sremmurd, Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane, 21 Savage, Lil Yachty, Big Sean, Rihanna, and YG are just a few of the artists Mike WiLL produced for this year. His 17 -track studio album, Ransom 2, also hosted these artists and many more. One of those artists that he worked with was Kendrick Lamar. It is no strange reason that he was recruited to be heavily involved in Kendrick Lamar’s 4th studio album, “DAMN.” He produced 3 out of the 14 tracks on the project including: “XXX,” “HUMBLE,” and “DNA.” These tracks played heavily everywhere because they were hard-hitting bangers, but also low-key political statements. Mike-WiLL worked hard all year long to give us amazing music and that is why he is on our Top 10 Producers of the Year list.
3) Southside
We have reached the Top 3 Producers of the Year. This year was a very competitive year between producers to make number one hits and make that beat that would catch the attention of everyone. Southside had no problem doing that. With songs like Gucci Mane’s “I Get the Bag”, which helped Gucci have his highest charting lead single in his career and has been on the hot 100 for 13 weeks straight at the time of this post, and Future & Young Thug’s “Patek Water, Southside found it easy to get us hooked on the sound. And with hits like Kodak Black’s 2x platinum single “Tunnel Vision” he gave us that infectious flute with those hard-hitting 808′s and those perfectly timed claps, hi-hats, and snares that had everyone moving their arms from side to side. Future’s 4x platinum single “Mask Off” also had everyone, old and young, singing,”percocet, molly, percocet.” Everyone just enjoyed the flute-dominated vibe even if the song talked about things most people would hate to be singing about. That is an extraordinary feat when your sound can make the audience just enjoy a song and sing along to it. Say what you want, but Southside was either making the hits or was in the room influencing the production of every hit this year, that’s facts.
2) DJ Dahi & Sounwave
We cannot mention DJ Dahi without mentioning Sounwave. The Top Dawg Entertainment in-house producers may not have had as many chart topping singles as the rest of the producers on this list, but the production they had on Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN” was extremely significant. They helped produce almost half of the album: including the songs “YAH,” “ELEMENT,” “FEEL,” “LOYALTY,” “LOVE,” “XXX,” and “LUST.” Those songs had some of the most meaningful messages emphasizing on the titles of the songs from Kendrick Lamar’s self-reflecting album. The sound accompanying those songs set the tone for each and every song mentioned and provided the backbone on which Kendrick could deliver his message. The amount of attention to detail and engineering was also near perfect. DJ Dahi & Sounwave place second on our list not because of quantity, but because of quality.
1) Metro Boomin
Metro Boomin was undeniably the biggest producer of 2017. The Atlanta producer was everywhere this year and there was no way you could escape his reach. His production was on point when it came to giving us all kinds of vibes. From Post Malone’s celebratory 5x platinum single “Congratulations” to the more chill, feely tape with Nav’s “Perfect Timing, which peaked at 13 on the Billboard 200. Metro Boomin was also co-producer for “Tunnel Vision,” “Mask Off,” and “I Get the Bag” along with frequent collaborator, Southside. 21 Savage and Offset worked with him to give us the unexpected “Without Warning” album that immediately had singles charting. There was no one in the industry that didn’t work or at least try to work with the young CEO this year and many failed too. His biggest hit in 2017 came from working with the Migos on the 4x platinum promotional single “Bad and Boujee” on their “Culture 2″ project. Yes, “Congratulations” had more sales, but “Bad and Boujee” was the most influential track of 2017 delivering some of the most catchiest bars on top off a melodic beat that fit perfectly with the Migos and Lil Uzi Vert’s flow. We are giving Metro Boomin the top spot in our Top 10 Producers of the Year spot untilmately because he is the first producer, ever, to dominate 10% of the Billboard Hot 100 at any given time in history. In terms of culture, Metro Boomin did more for it than any other producer did this year. We can expect Metro Boomin to continue dominating the production side of the game going into 2018.
