You know at first I didn't believe it when fiber artists on tumblr would tell me to be wary of the fiber art slippery slope. And yet. I hear the siren call of the spindle. Fellow crafters help me resist. Tie me to the fucking mast. Please.
I hope all new fiber artists know that the "slightly misshapen" object they made that they're stressed about not looking good:
1. Happens to every fiber artist always, you're too zoomed in to its every detail because you're the one who made it and most people would think it looks normal, or at least much less misshapen than you do, stand 20ft away from it and look at it and then see how you feel (true about all art tbh)
2. Gets better and more uniform each time you do anything
and the *very most important*:
3. Can be made Significantly Less Misshapen by just grabbing the fabric and stretching it in a few directions
I keep helping new fiber artists who are like "but my thing looks so bad :(((" by like, taking their object and stretching it sideways and horizontal, and handing it back, and they're like "????? Magic?????" bc it looks perfect.
"It takes 35,000 stitches to make a pair of socks, so that's 35,000 actions you're doing to produce this item that will hopefully take care of somebody, it's kind of like magic." 🔮✨🐇🧶❤️
I love this project - they complete UFOs left behind by loved ones.
In 2015, at 109 he created tiny clothes for Phillip Island Penguins who needed woolen jumpers in the wake of the oil spill to help prevent penguins from swallowing the oil when they attempted to clean themselves.
Alfred ‘Alfie’ Date passed away in 2016 at 110 years old.”
forever annoyed at the lack of non-woven jedi garments. excuse you, fibrecraft is the basis of society. where are they getting their cloth from? are they weaving it themselves? are they spinning it themselves? where is the knitwear. you cannot tell me that there are no sweaters in the jedi order. there are probably hideous sweaters made from fourteen different colours of yarn because they're made from the wool leftover from other projects. all of the colours manage to clash. and embroidery is just too good for teaching patience. hand-sewing in general is good and meditative.
these people are going to be darning their own socks, patching holes in their robes. they are going to have needles and thread in their survival kits and know how to hold the cloth tension just right with the force so they can re-weave the bigger holes by using tiny, straight sticks to hold the warp in place.
It's okay to not want to do your craft, just because you are a creative person doesn't mean that you need to be constantly creating and making!
Putting down a project that is driving you nuts and playing Skyrim for a week is OKAY!
Needing a break from your project is natural, even if it's just to pick up another one of your other hobbies.
The point of doing something you love is to enjoy doing it, so if you're not vibing, just take a break! It doesn't make you "less" of a knitter or crocheter or whatever. Be kind to yourselves, take a break and drink some water! 😚
Scarp socks! I’ve told myself I can’t buy anymore sock yarn until I finish what I have. So in a drastic move I cut up all my ugly / scrap self striping yarn and sorted it by colour.
They turned out great and I love playing with colour like this but there are just so many ends to weave in! (too many, one might say).
The colour work was inspired by Emma Ducher’s Anni sock pattern, which in turn was inspired by Anni Albers’s Bauhaus weaving.
my hand-knit dallas stars blackout jersey (sweater edition) is complete! just in time for game 1 round 1 of their 2024 playoff run 💚
this project was such a labour of love and the pictures above are the culmination of three months of planning, two months of knitting and too many days procrastinating weaving in all the ends 🥲
if anyone is curious about the project details including yarn amounts or how i did the intarsia logo, please feel free to send me a message and i’ll answer as best i can (or will send you the link to my ravelry page for this project) ☺️
