Fantober Day 1: Fave Protag

Decided this year I'm going to do Fantober! I won't be limiting myself to just ink and paper this year, but at the same time, don't expect a complete illustration every day.

I'm starting off this one with a drawing of Klonoa! You'll...probably be seeing a lot of him this month tbh

[Klonoa 2 spoilers] A Leorina-related factoid

I was doing some research earlier tonight and learned something interesting about the original Japanese version of the game:

The name of Leorina's boss form (when she's overtaken by the power of sorrow) is officially "Cursed Leorina" in English, as you may already know. What I didn't know until now was that her Japanese name is noticeably different:

The boss's original Japanese name is "忌まれしレオリナ," which means something like "Detested/Abhorred Leorina." (The grammar of the adjective is unusual: 忌まれる is the passive form of 忌む, a verb meaning "to shun," but with the final kana replaced with し. From what I've read, in classical Japanese, this simultaneously indicates the past tense and conjugates the verb such that it affects a noun - in this case, "Leorina.")

To me, this makes more thematic sense. The conflict of Lunatea's Veil ultimately turns out to be rooted in how Lunatea at large insisted on completely ignoring and rejecting sorrow, so Leorina becoming "detested" once the power of sorrow overtakes her fits perfectly.

Also, as a postscript: the Shogakukan guide for the game does at one point refer to the boss as "カースドレオリナ," a direct transliteration of "Cursed Leorina" into katakana.

Fantober Day 6: Rare Shipart

Does it count as a rarepair if the main reason it's rare is that one franchise is relatively niche?

Honestly I just think these two would be cute if they met, and drawing this was one of the main reasons I settled on Fantober. I mean think about it, they're vaguely the same undefined (in the modern era) age, they both are known for dual appendages that let them fly, and they both occupy a large portion of my childhood gaming. Practically a match made in heaven!

On a more serious note, if the image looks off, it's because I ran it through Nightshade to protect it against AI theft. I also tried to run it through Glaze, but it rendered the piece uncannier than ever, so I skipped out on that step. Rest assured, though, I made everything here, including the text and text BG (though, obviously, I didn't make the photo of the actual 7-11 aisle).
