Emerald Lake, Yukon, Canada
Emerald Lake is located along the Klondike Highway in the beautiful Yukon region of Canada. Nestled amidst towering mountains and dense evergreen forests, this lake offers a breathtaking sight that feels straight out of a dream. As its name suggests, the lake boasts a vibrant emerald hue, which is a result of marl deposits at the bottom. Also known as 'Rainbow Lake' by First Nations people, Emerald Lake is surrounded by unspoiled wilderness, making it a must-visit destination, especially for those seeking a break from the humdrum of city life. This serene lake is a true testament to the sheer diversity and beauty of Canada's natural landscapes.

Was looking at old photograph taken circa early 1880s of the same area where Johannesburg now stands and there's obsoletely nothing beyond plant life there (unlike even nearby Pretoria the local Sotho-Tswana peoples didn't have any settlements in present-day Johannesburg prior to the gold mining) and then a photograph taken circa late 1880 and it like million tents are there (maybe that's an exaggeration). Made me wonder about the last "overnight city" was founded in recent history?
This is a fascinating question!
It's true that the "boom town" phenomena occurs in the case of gold rushes - like California in 1849, West Australia in 1851, the Klondike in 1896 - or the construction of railroads or highways or the development of new factory towns or the like.
I would say that the most recent example of this phenomenon is the "new cities" built in China as speculative real estate developments premised around the need for affordable housing for manufacturing workforces, especially during the 2005-2011 housing bubble. In some years, these developments hit big and you get brand-new megacities out of nowhere.
In the past couple of years, with the slowdown in the Chinese economy and particular problems in the real estate sector, the fascinating phenomena of "ghost cities" (originally observed in 2006) where there are massive empty developments in various stages of construction just lying vacant has become more prominent, as developers run out of money or credit, or find it hard to attract industry and residents in a time of COVID lockdowns and the relative decline of Chinese manufacturing as a basis for urbanization.

Chasing in style! por Kevin Madore Por Flickr: With the White Pass Rotary Fleet stopped right squarely across the Klondike Highway crossing behind me, our photo chase train creeps slowly into Log Cabin to pick us up and take us to the rotary finale at Bennett. Folks who have been to the White Pass & Yukon are probably familiar with the fact that this line is tough to chase. Yes, there are a few stretches that can be seen from the Klondike Highway, but they are darn few in number. To get photos of trains on this railroad, you need to chase with a train. For each of the 4 days of the 2011 Rotary Run, the White Pass & Yukon provided us with a 5-car chase train, powered by 2 of the iconic 90-class diesel locomotives. Each day, both the locomotives and the consist were different pieces, and everything was immaculately clean. The locomotives had recently been completely rebuilt and repainted, so as diesels go, they were pretty photogenic. We were allowed to ride the platforms and with 5 cars and only 17 photographers, there was plenty of room to spread out. The railroad also provided several White Pass historians to accompany us, answering our many questions and providing expert commentary on everything from operations to the awesome scenery. Of course, food was also provided. During lengthy plowing operations at White Pass, the train provided a handy place to sit down, relax and have some refreshments. Having seen all of my photos of the Rotary Fleet, and now the chase train, one might be inclined to believe that this little "charter" had an eye-watering price tag, but such was not the case. The railroad financed the entire rotary operation as a training exercise. All we paid for was the train you see here. Of note for the 90-Class fans is the famous "Thunderbird" painting that you see on the nose of each of these locomotives. While I didn't have the time to compare them, I am told by the White Pass mechanical staff that while they all look alike from a distance, each one is actually unique.

LES COWBOYS FRINGANTS - L'Amérique pleure (America Cries)
English translation -
Another day getting up at the same time as the sun My face still messed up from my four hours of sleep yeah I take a few pulls from a cig, job done for the vitamins And another mop water coffee to give myself a better air
Yeah
I take the Florida Turnpike Tomorrow evening I'm in Montmagny Being a trucker ain't the Klondike But you see quite a bit of country yeah Especially since it makes you realize That behind the nice landscapes There's so much inequality And suffering on the faces
The question I keep asking myself But how do all those people Keep believing in life through this hypocrisy It's so sad that sometimes when I get back home And I park my old truck I see the whole of America cry In my rearview mirror
I drag around in my trailer All the excesses of my epoch Overabundance overfrozen shot overwrapped yeah While wishful thinking goes nowhere That our carelessness is sated It's at the bottom of containers That will rot the surpluses
The question I keep asking myself But what will our children do When there will be nothing left But ruins and hunger It's so sad that sometimes when I get back home And I park my old truck I see the whole of America cry In my rearview mirror
On Interstate 95 Up in smoke go up all the dreams A burning car in the ramp A fatal accident yeah And in the middle of this traffic jam No respect for death Each in turn plays their car horn In such a hurry to get nowhere
The question I keep asking myself But where are all those people going There's so many cars everywhere The world has gone crazy It's so sad that sometimes when I get back home And I park my old truck I see the whole of America cry In my rearview mirror
Another highway truck stop Stuck eating bullshit It's true that in the soup of the day There's not much love left yeah We killed human warmth With chain service On TV another madman Just started a mass shooting
The question I keep asking myself But how do all those people Manage to go through A whole life without love It's so sad that sometimes when I get back home And I park my old truck I see the whole of America cry In my rearview mirror
But after all I too When I'm rolling all alone at night I ask myself what the fuck I'm doing here Stuck in the back country yeah I think about all I've missed With Mimi and both my daughters And I get that fucked up feeling Of being a stranger in my own family
The question I keep asking myself Why keep working so much Afar from those I love All that to play the game It's so sad that sometimes when I'm far away from home Sitting in my old truck I have the whole of America crying Somewhere at the bottom of my heart

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about folks from Texas ...
If someone in a Lowe's store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you may live in Texas ;
If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas ;
If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Texas ;
If 'Vacation' means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend, you may live in Texas ;
If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Texas ;
If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Texas ;
If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Texas ;
If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Texas
If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph --you're going 80 and everybody's passing you, you may live in Texas ;
If you find 60 degrees 'a little chilly,' you may live in Texas ;
If you actually understand these jokes, and share them with all your Texas friends, you definitely live in Texas ..
Here are some little known, very interesting facts about Texas .
1. Beaumont to El Paso : 742 miles
2... Beaumont to Chicago : 770 miles
3... El Paso is closer to California than to Dallas
4... World's first rodeo was in Pecos , July 4, 1883.
5. The Flagship Hotel in Galveston is the only hotel in North America built over water. Destroyed by Hurricane Ike -2008!

7. Brazoria County has more species of birds than any other area in North America
8. Aransas Wildlife Refuge is the winter home of North America 's only remaining flock of whooping cranes.
9. Jalapeno jelly originated in Lake Jackson in 1978.
10. The worst natural disaster in U.S.... history was in 1900, caused by a hurricane, in which over 8,000 lives were lost on Galveston Island .
11. The first word spoken from the moon, July 20,1969, was " Houston ," but the space center was actually in Clear Lake City at the time.
12. King Ranch in South Texas is larger than Rhode Island ..
13. Tropical Storm Claudette brought a U.S. rainfall record of 43' in 24 hours in and around Alvin in July of 1979...
14. Texas is the only state to enter the U.S. by TREATY, (known as the Constitution of 1845 by the Republic of Texas to enter the Union ) instead of by annexation. This allows the Texas Flag to fly at the same height as the U.S. Flag, and may divide into 5 states.
15. A Live Oak tree near Fulton is estimated to be 1500 years old.
16. Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in the state.
17. Dr Pepper was invented in Waco in 1885. There is no period in Dr Pepper..

Alaska (No. 4)
The state is bordered by Canada's Yukon and British Columbia to the east (making it the only state to only border a Canadian territory); the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south and southwest; the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west; and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska's territorial waters touch Russia's territorial waters in the Bering Strait, as the Russian Big Diomede Island and Alaskan Little Diomede Island are only 3 miles (4.8 km) apart. Alaska has a longer coastline than all the other U.S. states combined. Alaska's size compared with the 48 contiguous states (Albers equal-area conic projection)
At 663,268 square miles (1,717,856 km2) in total area, Alaska is by far the largest state in the United States. Alaska is more than twice the size of the second-largest U.S. state (Texas), and it is larger than the next three largest states (Texas, California, and Montana) combined. Alaska is the seventh largest subnational division in the world. If it was an independent nation, it would be the 18th largest country in the world; almost the same size as Iran.
With its myriad of islands, Alaska has nearly 34,000 miles (55,000 km) of tidal shoreline. The Aleutian Islands chain extends west from the southern tip of the Alaska Peninsula. Many active volcanoes are found in the Aleutians and in coastal regions. Unimak Island, for example, is home to Mount Shishaldin, which is an occasionally smoldering volcano that rises to 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above the North Pacific. The chain of volcanoes extends to Mount Spurr, west of Anchorage on the mainland. Geologists have identified Alaska as part of Wrangellia, a large region consisting of multiple states and Canadian provinces in the Pacific Northwest, which is actively undergoing continent building.
One of the world's largest tides occurs in Turnagain Arm, just south of Anchorage, where tidal differences can be more than 35 feet (10.7 m).
Alaska has more than 409,000 natural lakes at least one hectare or bigger. Marshlands and wetland permafrost cover 188,320 square miles (487,700 km2) (mostly in northern, western and southwest flatlands). Glacier ice covers about 28,957 square miles (75,000 km2) of Alaska. The Bering Glacier is the largest glacier in North America, covering 2,008 square miles (5,200 km2) alone.

To Carmack
Day 13 -
We drove back to WH to watch the start of the Yukon River Quest, a 715 km human powered race with Kayaks , canoes, pontoon boats and paddle boards and they must be human powered. This year they had ‘only’ 80 teams. Lots of people, mostly friends and support people to the competitors, this is truly an Amazing Race.
Then we took in the Museum of Natural History of Beringia and the Museum of Human History and Tribal Culture are both very well presented.
After a quick visit to the Chevy Dealer we were on our way down river on Hwy 2 driving North on the Klondike Highway along Laberge Lake. The Yukon River flows through this lake and meanders back and forth along this Alpine plateau.
But the road took us up to a higher level with long flat stretches with up and down undulations all the way to the arctic ocean.
Carmack is where all the competitors have to take a mandatory 10 hours rest. On the highway, it’s just a service stop with a few houses and 4 campgrounds for the Hwy traffic. At this point in the race all the competitors are spaced apart, arriving and leaving at different times.
However on the Yukon, the famous Five Finger Rapids is 10km down river from Carmack, I will have to find some drone footage of the racers paddling through the rapids, I am sure that it is gnarly.
We drove on northward to Minto Landing and Pelly Crossing. Declines and inclines at every river crossing is the only change during 500km.
At Stewart Crossing we decided to drive up Hwy 11 and look for a place to camp. Found a nice place 5km up the road along the river.
The deforestation on the sidehills along the Klondike River all happened during the 20years of the gold rush for fuel for the paddle wheeler ships on the river.

Steamboat Klondike II - August 2023 Whitehorse was a major shipping point on the Yukon River. The Klondike was the largest of the steamboats on the Yukon. The first Klondike sank when a junior officer went over a rock and stove the hull. Klondike II was built using much of the salvage from the original Klondike. When the Alcan highway brought trucking to the upper Yukon, the steamboats were no longer the best way to transport goods and most soon were abandoned. Some, like the Klondike II, were turned into museums. The second and third images are one of the steam pistons that turned the paddlewheel. The last image is a barge that the museum is restoring. Such barges were often pushed by the steamboats to add cargo hauling capabilities. MWM
