Alaska (No. 4)
The state is bordered by Canada's Yukon and British Columbia to the east (making it the only state to only border a Canadian territory); the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean to the south and southwest; the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to the west; and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Alaska's territorial waters touch Russia's territorial waters in the Bering Strait, as the Russian Big Diomede Island and Alaskan Little Diomede Island are only 3 miles (4.8 km) apart. Alaska has a longer coastline than all the other U.S. states combined. Alaska's size compared with the 48 contiguous states (Albers equal-area conic projection)
At 663,268 square miles (1,717,856 km2) in total area, Alaska is by far the largest state in the United States. Alaska is more than twice the size of the second-largest U.S. state (Texas), and it is larger than the next three largest states (Texas, California, and Montana) combined. Alaska is the seventh largest subnational division in the world. If it was an independent nation, it would be the 18th largest country in the world; almost the same size as Iran.
With its myriad of islands, Alaska has nearly 34,000 miles (55,000 km) of tidal shoreline. The Aleutian Islands chain extends west from the southern tip of the Alaska Peninsula. Many active volcanoes are found in the Aleutians and in coastal regions. Unimak Island, for example, is home to Mount Shishaldin, which is an occasionally smoldering volcano that rises to 10,000 feet (3,000 m) above the North Pacific. The chain of volcanoes extends to Mount Spurr, west of Anchorage on the mainland. Geologists have identified Alaska as part of Wrangellia, a large region consisting of multiple states and Canadian provinces in the Pacific Northwest, which is actively undergoing continent building.
One of the world's largest tides occurs in Turnagain Arm, just south of Anchorage, where tidal differences can be more than 35 feet (10.7 m).
Alaska has more than 409,000 natural lakes at least one hectare or bigger. Marshlands and wetland permafrost cover 188,320 square miles (487,700 km2) (mostly in northern, western and southwest flatlands). Glacier ice covers about 28,957 square miles (75,000 km2) of Alaska. The Bering Glacier is the largest glacier in North America, covering 2,008 square miles (5,200 km2) alone.

So Here are the Spoilers -Volume III
AKA I have not been this mad at Cheritz for ages. Let’s deep dive.
Warning: this post contains spoilers and mentions of abuse and p*dophilia.
Also Rika.
So much Rika...
I am mad, yo
Not even mad, I am furious.
As I usually do when I give my thoughts like this, here is what I wanted from V after end and Rika DLC
V moving on with his life and having a happy ending with MC
The RFA healing and also moving on
A focus on MC and V!! And their love???? You know?? The point of him having a route in the first place.
An exploration of Rika’s past and Mint Eye, to fill in all the blanks we have so far
Rika facing justice and seeking redemption.
I’ll be honest.
If you want fluffy V and MC content, go ahead and play the existing ends. The after end is not really about V at all. It’s along the same lines as Secret Ends 02, where your LI isn’t really present and instead dealing with their own emotional turmoil and issues.
And, you know. To an extent I would have been okay with this in V content. V is the leader of the RFA and it would be weird if the fall out from Rika wasn’t even addressed. My beef about this is that we don’t get a secret end 01 where MC and V are together, repairing problems together. We don’t see V at all for 98% of the story. We get more Rika content than V...which is a whole other issue I’ll get to in a bit. Hell...I’m pretty sure we get more VANDERWOOD than V. (Don’t get me wrong...I like Vanderwood, but wtf??)
It’s honestly the same complaint I have for both Jumin’s after end and Valentine’s DLC, where he’s not even present for most of it and it feels like a waste of time and hourglasses. (And at 80 hourglasses per chapter, plus another 100 to unlock both endings, it doesn’t come cheap.)
V and MC’s ‘happy ending’ is an afterthought. V’s entire presence in the after end is an ‘oh by the way, remember V? The character whose after end you’re in I guess???’
Ugh.
Anyway.
It was good to see the RFA healing and moving on. I was so heartbroken by Jumin’s inability to cope with what was going on, even as he took extra care to make sure the rest of the RFA were fine. I loved Yoosung’s anger and conflict over this person he’d admired and respected for so long. I loved Seven’s complete breakdown over the potential loss of his brother.
I loved that they got reunited!
What I didn’t like?
The forcedness.
The after end gives you two choices: Judge or Forgive. I hoped that they would be complimentary to one another, like in Seven’s Valentine DLC, where both were good ends, just different in tone.
Well, boy was I wrong!
From the beginning of the After End, you are pushed towards Forgiveness, with the MC being portrayed as completely unreasonable and borderline hysterical if they show even an ounce of resentment and anger towards Rika. If you go on to unlock the Judgement ending, Cheritz not only spits in your face but every single one of her victims.
There is a short VN sequence called Rika Circus, where you are mocked for essentially enjoying torture porn and wanting Rika to come to a cruel end and suffer a horrible fate. It’s the judgement ending, but you the player are judged instead.
Just getting these screens made me feel physically sick:
I don’t know where to begin with this bs. Maybe with the preface that I am an abuse survivor and pushing the idea that victims have to forgive their abusers in any way shape or form and aren’t allowed to hold even a small amount of anger towards them is completely shameful? This ending literally borders on the same gaslighting logic that if a victim stands up to their abuser they are the shitty one and hyper aggressive. I wish I could explain how bad this ending was for my PTSD.
Actually no. I will explain.
The most important lesson I got from my therapist was how okay it was to be angry, because it was an acknowledgement that I was a victim and my abuser was in the wrong. That I didn’t have to forgive her if I didn’t want to. That it was important for me to feel valid in my emotions.
Maybe what bothered me was the cognitive dissonance (and gaslighting) that an MC wanting Rika to face justice must 100% want her to die or live out the rest of her days being mistreated and even sexually assaulted? Like??? How about no?? Are there no jails in Mysme’s universe? No community service? We know from the Judgement end that she got a life sentence, so it’s not like the MC sentenced her to death.
Maybe it’s because the player is given very valid choices e.g. being suspicious of the cult leader who stabbed their boyfriend and tortured numerous people, but are framed along the same lines as the MC being like KILL HER *knife emoji*.
Maybe it’s because this ending is the first time the player gets close to knowing Rika’s past and then is made to feel guilty about not knowing it?
I just
/inhale
right.
/deep breaths
okay
/breathe
my hands haven’t stopped shaking for hours haHA fuck my life
I can’t help but feel like this after end undid absolutely all of the highlights of V’s route. V only mentions his love being an obsession in the judgement endings.
Actually, all of the RFA’s reactions in the judgement ending are the same as their reactions to finding out the truth about Rika in V’s route. Jumin wants her to have a life sentence despite his conflict about it. Yoosung is upset and mad. Zen wants nothing to do with her.
And this is the ‘bad’ ending.
The forgiveness ending is pretty Rika centric and incorporates V’s good end. The RFA is back to normal, V comes back fine. It’s strongly implied that he and Rika both spent time in Alaska together before coming to propose to MC. Rika, as far as we know, never faced punishment for her crimes, which is framed as a good thing.
Perhaps the most abhorrent part of the forgiveness ending is that it’s the only one where Rika comes forward and confesses the truth about the twins...which... I’m not sure why C&R’s fate, the Chois being safe etc et al comes down to MC’s feelings about Rika. It’s a disservice to Rika more than anything, because it seems like she only comes clean because MC was nice to her and not because...you know.. it was the right thing to do.
And this brings me onto the treatment of Rika in the route and DLC and holy shit, it’s a ride.
No, Rika is not redeemed.
Yes, she is woobified to hell and back and then twice more.
We learn that Rika was adopted by Yoosung’s relatives, who were cruel and devoted to the Catholic church. Later she was verbally abused and assaulted by a priest. She later decided to take power in the fact that people would be afraid of her and thought she was Satan etc.
I’ll be blunt.
Rika’s DLC is just an expensive retcon. It’s seven chapters at 60HG each just to be told that Rika had a sad past and all of her terrible actions came from being treated badly. She does not even get to be held accountable for Mint Eye, because Cheritz gave her a sister who actually was the one to tell her not to trust V or the RFA and poisoned her mind.
Rika does not, nor ever, get a proper redemption because even in her own DLC it’s never admitted that she was in the wrong...which is some bullshit logic because...well..it’s really jarring to have it constantly reinforced that Rika did nothing wrong and should not be judged because of her sad past at the hands of her foster mother with cult-like beliefs... because if we take from it the fact that Rika became essentially the same, by extension shouldn’t we then forgive her abusers because we don’t know their story either? Should we shrug off any notion that the priest should be imprisoned because judging people is bad and we just want him to be tortured and forgiveness is the way to go?
I’m just
I don’t know what I expected but
they still managed to disappoint me
To summarise, the after end is bullshit, V isn’t even there for most of it, Rika gets no redemption arc and is treated like an uwu flower crown victim and it’s all very manipulative and rushed lmao. It’s a waste of hourglasses and time and literally undoes everything good that came before it

To Test Covid Protocols, Cruise Lines Turn to Volunteer Guinea Pigs Since March of last year, cruise ships carrying more than 250 people have been prohibited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from sailing in U.S. waters. To start again, they need to follow a complex process that, in some cases, involves simulated cruises designed to test Covid-19 protocols. Hundreds of thousands of frustrated and restless cruise fans have lined up to be guinea pigs. Jennifer Juenke is one of them. “Ever since the C.D.C. shut down the cruise industry, we have been living through a complete nightmare,” said Ms. Juenke, one of more than 250,000 people who signed up for a test sailing with Royal Caribbean, a major cruise company. “It has been too long, and we are just raring to go.” On Tuesday, Royal Caribbean became the first cruise line to receive approval from the C.D.C. to conduct simulated voyages, which are planned for its Freedom of the Seas ship starting from PortMiami in Florida in late June. For some of the volunteers, it’s a way to offer support to the $150 billion industry, which has been decimated by the pandemic. For others it’s a chance to get a feel for what post-pandemic cruising will feel like. But for most who’ve raised their hands, it’s a way to sate their longing to get back on a boat after more than a year of being stuck onshore. “The C.D.C. has been holding us all captive and I really can’t wait any longer, I can’t wait until July,” said Justin Marks, a 59-year-old retired Alabama resident, referring to one target date that has been floated for when ships might start sailing. Mr. Marks, who has 12 cruises booked through 2022, is undeterred by the outbreaks onboard cruise ships at the start of the pandemic last year. “I’m dying to be picked for the test cruise, mostly because I need to start cruising again for my sanity,” he said, “but also because I want to show the world how much safer a cruise ship is than any plane or hotel that has been allowed to operate throughout the whole pandemic.” Exactly how the cruise lines will return to operations in the United States remains unclear. Earlier this month, the C.D.C. said it would allow cruise lines to skip test voyages if they attest that 98 percent of the crew and 95 percent of passengers on board a cruise are fully vaccinated. Several major cruise companies have already announced Alaska sailings starting in late July, which will require all passengers to prove that they are vaccinated. But in Florida, the cruise lines’ biggest U.S. departure point, recently enacted state law bans businesses from requiring proof of immunizations from people seeking to use their services. Florida officials have said they will not exempt the cruise lines. If cruise companies decide to sail with a mix of vaccinated and non-vaccinated passengers, they will have to carry out simulation cruises with volunteers to test health and safety protocols. That has avid cruisers like Mark Zumo, 53, from Baton Rouge, La., eager to help out, even though, he said, he realizes the test cruises will not be like the real thing. (He had 20 cruises canceled during the pandemic and has already booked 25 between this August and December 2022.) “A lot of people think it’s going to be a free holiday, but I realize that it won’t be,” he said. “It’s about testing Covid protocols and could mean being confined to your room for the entire cruise,” he said. “But I’m more than willing to do it,” he continued. “When you look at the devastation caused by the shutting down of the cruise industry, it reaches so far — from farmers to port workers to hotels and taxi cabs. I’ll do whatever I can to help get things running again.” The simulated voyages must be between two to seven days in length with at least one overnight stay, according to C.D.C. guidelines. They are required to test embarkation and disembarkation procedures, medical evacuations onboard activities such as meal service and entertainment, recreational activities like fitness classes and swimming and shore excursions. All volunteers will be issued with a written notice advising them about the risks of participating in health and safety protocols that are unproved and untested in the United States. Most of the simulation cruise volunteers said they are fully vaccinated and do not have safety concerns about testing out health protocols for upcoming voyages. More than 66,000 people joined Royal Caribbean’s Facebook group “Volunteers of the Seas” to express interest in the initiative. “I feel safer on a cruise ship than I do in my grocery store,” Ms. Juenke said. “Cruises have restarted in Europe and it’s going fine.” MSC, a global cruise line based in Geneva, Switzerland, was the first major cruise company to resume international sailings in Europe, which it started last August. It has relied on a stringent testing and contact tracing program to avoid large Covid outbreaks like the one on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan last year where 700 people became infected with the disease and 14 people died. “At the beginning we must appreciate that no one knew anything about the virus and how it behaved and was transmitted,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, the executive chairman of MSC Cruises and global chair of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the industry’s trade group. “We have come so far from that moment in terms of scientific knowledge and technology,” he said. On MSC European cruises, all guests receive antigen tests when they board and if they test positive, they are given an additional PCR test. Non-vaccinated guests boarding its cruises in Britain must also present proof of a PCR test taken 48 hours before they embark. Passengers are also tested mid-cruise after three or four days and are required to wear contact tracing bracelets so that they can be tracked down if someone they have come into contact with tests positive. All passengers who test positive while on board are isolated until the ship returns to the port of embarkation or have the option to disembark at the next port of call if they need urgent medical attention. MSC said it had identified a handful of positive cases on board its ships since resuming operations last year, which were handled swiftly and effectively, but declined to provide the exact number of cases. On Monday, four crew members on board Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, tested positive for Covid-19 en route to the United States from Israel. The ship was not carrying passengers and the crew members were immediately isolated before disembarking in Spain, Royal Caribbean said. Mr. Vago views MSC’s protocols — which run to 700 pages — as a model for the industry and after participating in a recent technical round table discussion between the C.D.C. and cruise industry representatives in Washington, he said he is optimistic that U.S. cruises will begin again this summer. “People have been really affected psychologically by this pandemic and we understand how important and urgent it is for them to be able to get back out there and see a sunset and mingle,” Mr. Vago said. After receiving brain surgery last year and working night shifts as a surgery technician at a hospital, Cristie Nino, of Salinas, Calif., said she is ready to volunteer on a test cruise. “I think I would be the perfect person to go on one of these test cruises because I’m not scared,” she said. I’ve been on the Covid floor, I’ve seen Covid patients, I’ve been through the toughest part. Cruise ships, she said, “have always been a cesspool for viruses, like planes, and I think there were risks at the height of the pandemic, but now with vaccines and health and safety measures I think they are ready to go again.” Follow New York Times Travel on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. PBA: Despite loss, Hotshots proved doubters wrong If there’s a positive side to Magnolia’s narrow title loss to sister squad San Miguel in the PBA Philippine Cup finals, it’s the maturity level reached by the runner-up team during the series that went the full route. Head coach Chito Victolero feels the team “was one or two possessions away from winning the title.” "We were almost there,” he said, still reeling from the Game 7 defeat. With the Commissioner’s Cup days from its formal opening, Victolero believes that display of maturity can help them perform much better in the import-laden conference. “I hope we can carry that maturity in the Commissioner’s Cup. We have a few days rest, then we will go back to work to prepare for the second conference.” Besides, Magnolia was given little chance at the start of the all-Filipino title showdown against a powerhouse SMB crew led by five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo. However, the Hotshots surprised many when it stunned SMB with a 99-94 victory in Game 1 of the finals, and when it took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series following an 88-86 win in Game 5 on a buzzer-beating jumper by Mark Barroca. San Miguel forced a do-or-die Game 7 with a 98-86 win in Game 6. Victolero said there is nothing to be ashamed, considering it went to a Game 7 when most of basketball observers were predicting a sweep by San Miguel in the finals. “Before the finals, there were predictions that we’ll be swept, that we don’t have a chance. But we – the whole team – we believed in each other. We came up short, but I think we earned the respect,” said Victolero. Magnolia will resume training next week to prepare for the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, which starts Sunday at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena in Pasay City. Why Justin Amash’s Anti-Trump Solo Act Is Doomed

Why Justin Amash’s Anti-Trump Solo Act Is Doomed

analysis
In Hollywood, the lonely truthteller makes history. In Washington, history shows that their friends send them packing.
The nation’s Democrats and dwindling legions of never-Trump conservatives have thrilled to the one-man rebellion of Rep. Justin Amash, the Michigan libertarian whose thoughtful, damning tweetstorm on impeachment made him the only Republican to break ranks on the most divisive issue in American politics.
As this one crack appeared in the dam, President Donald Trump’s critics waited for more. Everyone knows the script once the first brave voice speaks out: the lone holdout on a jury, convincing his colleagues that the defendant may not be guilty after all. The union organizer at the factory, rallying her coworkers against greater wrongs. The whistleblower standing alone on the Senate floor, railing until truth prevails and the corrupt are exposed.
Story Continued Below
The problem is that the script comes from movies. That was Henry Fonda in the jury room, not a real foreman; that was Sally Field as Norma Rae organizing the cotton mill; and Jimmy Stewart delivering his lines on a studio version of the Senate floor.
When it comes to real politics, the record is grim. History may reward your courage, but the politics of the moment suggests that the heretics end up leading a one-man band into political obscurity.
In 1964, when the Senate handed a blank check to President Lyndon Johnson “to take all necessary steps, including the use of armed force, in Vietnam”—which LBJ used as the legal basis for the massive escalation in years to come— 98 senators voted for it. Only two senators, Democrats Wayne Morse of Oregon and Ernest Gruening of Alaska, voted “no” on the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. As the war escalated, and it became clear the engagement was a national catastrophe, history vindicated their position and other senators, like Arkansas’ William Fulbright and Wisconsin’s Gaylord Nelson, wished they had done the same. But it didn’t do much good for Morse and Gruening. Both were defeated for reelection in 1968, and neither held political office again.
Eight years later, even before a band of burglars tried to break into Democratic headquarters at the Watergate, two Republican House members challenged President Richard Nixon in the Republican primary. For California’s Pete McCloskey, the issue was Nixon’s failure to end the war in Vietnam. For Ohio’s John Ashbrook, it was Nixon’s various apostasies from conservative orthodoxy—the turn toward China, arms deals with Moscow, wage and price controls. Not only did Ashbrook and McCloskey lose, but barely anyone remembers Nixon had challengers. Ashbrook withdrew, and McCloskey wound up with one delegate out of 1,348.
Even prominent party leaders run aground when calling for resistance to a president. Al Smith, the 1928 Democratic nominee, turned hard against FDR’s New Deal, ultimately campaigning for Republican nominee Alf Landon in 1936, who lost in a 46-state landslide. In 1940, Roosevelt’s vice president, John Nance Garner, sought the nomination for himself, opposing both FDR’s unprecedented third term and his New Deal policies. Garner got 61 delegates out of 1,093 and retired from public life.
For sheer persistence on the “lonely voice” front, no one can top Jeannette Rankin, who was elected as the first female member of the House of Representatives in 1916. A year later, she was one of 50 House members to vote against the American entry into World War I, and she left the House after one term. Twenty-two years later, in 1940, she went back to the House; and a year later, she became the only member ofeitherhouse to vote against the declaration of war with Japan. Once again, her first term was her last. (And in this case, history doesn’t smile so kindly on her positions).
Politics is a numbers game, and the record shows that there’s a much safer route for dissidents to survive politically: be part of a decent-sized cohort. By 1968, for example, antiwar Democrats in the Senate—George McGovern, Frank Church, Gaylord Nelson, among others—all won reelection, in part because by then, support for the war in Vietnam had eroded. A more striking example comes from Ronald Reagan’s near-successful campaign in 1976 to depose President Gerald Ford. Despite the conviction of Ford and others that the Reagan primary challenge cost Ford the White House, Reagan faced no hostility from the party base when he ran again in 1980—in large measure because he was much more in sync with the GOP base than Ford was. And while Ted Kennedy did not succeed in unseating President Jimmy Carter in 1980, both his stature in the Senate and the widespread discontent with Carter inside the party left Kennedy as a major voice in American politics for another quarter century.
It’s theoretically possible that some new revelation, or a sudden downturn in the economy, will make Trump vulnerable enough that his party’s House and Senate candidates will find it a political asset to distance themselves from the top of the ticket. But given the willingness of Republicans to defend, and even embrace, the character and conduct of this president, it should not be a surprise to Amash that he finds himself in a party of one. Right now, a primary challenge from ex-Governor William Weld, and a potential campaign by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, look to suffer a similar fate.
Trump’s approval ratings inside his party are now at 90 percent. Those officeholders who have called out the president have found their political careers derailed, one by one: Mark Sanford in South Carolina, Jeff Flake in Arizona, Bob Corker in Tennessee. Trump’s political supporters have purged party officials in several states for suspect loyalty. And the chair of the Republican Party, Ronna McDaniel, no longer goes by the name “Ronna Romney McDaniel” because the president asked her to drop the name of one of his occasional critics.
For all the idealism ofTwelve Angry MenandMr. Smith Goes to Washington, there is a different Hollywood example that Amash should pay attention to:High Noon, the 1952 Western. When Marshall Will Kane asks the people of Hadleyville to help him face down the vicious Miller Gang, the citizens respond by cowering inside their homes. Kane, for all his bravery, is left to stand alone.
It’s no mystery why in today’s Republican Party, so many of those who share Amash’s view of Trump are behaving like the citizens of Hadleyville. “One man with courage makes a majority,” an old adage goes, but when it comes to political heretics, that’s not the way to bet.

Stroll along wooden sidewalks past false-front shops and beautifully restored buildings dating back to the 1900s. Learn about Alaska’s most notorious outlaw, Soapy Smith, by taking in the ‘Days of ‘98’ theatre production and then drop by the historic Red Onion Saloon to unwind. If you’re up for a short hike, head to the lookout just outside of town for sweeping views of Skagway and Lynn Canal. Or take a ride on the iconic White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, which passes by waterfalls, gorges and countless stunning vistas. From C-130 navigator to drone pilot to CFI – my atypical journey
My love for aviation and my pursuit for a career began similarly as many others. I grew up in a small Georgia town and was first introduced by a friend who ended up flying as a missionary in Alaska. Instead of working to buy the big truck with big tires, I worked to pay for flying lessons. My mom wouldn’t let me take flying lessons until I could drive myself to the airport, so I set my goal for that summer. My instructor was a World War II veteran who flew C-47s in North Africa and the Mediterranean and had gone into ministry as a career and was part-time on staff at my church. We began flying in the summer of 1997 and on the budget of a 16-year old, so flying opportunities ended coming along two or three times a month. I can say that I still met the goals I had set: solo while I was 16 and Private checkride complete before high school graduation and my 18th birthday, and even before I had flown as passenger on a commercial airline.
I had settled early on the military as the pathway I would take to build a flying career, but knew that I faced the same challenge as Bob Hoover did when he joined, my uncorrected eyesight. I enrolled at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach with an Air Force ROTC scholarship. While there, I completed my Instrument, Commercial, and Multi, as a back-up of sorts if I didn’t have a flight doc as generous as Bob’s. I didn’t… and was selected to attended navigator training after graduation in 2003. My thought was that I could apply to pilot training after I was a navigator and after I had the magical laser eye-surgery at government expense. At the time, the surgery would only be valid if it was performed at an Air Force facility.
Being a navigator is close enough to flying to be tempting, but not close enough.
After I completed my training as a C-130 navigator, I began the brutal cycle of deploying: 120 days gone, 120 days home with my wife bearing the brunt of being at a new home for the first time alone. I still maintained my original goal of becoming a military pilot. I was eventually able to work approval for laser eye surgery; I even gave up my spot to navigator instructor school for the surgery, and then applied to the active duty pilot training selection board, which normally took 50 officers per year from active duty.
By the time the board met, I was off to instructor school anyway at Little Rock AFB and was anxiously waiting for the results, feeling my future was in the pilot’s seat of an Air Force airplane – fighters if I had anything to say about. Rarely does the Air Force ask, or listen to individual preferences when making decisions; even with a letter of endorsement from my U.S. Senator, I was left empty handed. After coming out of my fog of disappointment, I called the Personnel Center and found out that they had only selected 35 officers that year and I was number 38. Because I had five years of commissioned service, it was the last board I was eligible.
I searched for options. I knew that the day of the navigator was ending in the C-130. The new –J model does not carry a navigator. I heard that the Air Force was at the time accepting navigators who, as it was, had their FAA Commercial-Instrument to fly drones. (An entire article could be written on the names given to unmanned aircraft) I was due for a move and I told my squadron commander that I was a volunteer. It didn’t take long. I took a non-volunteer slot from a lucky co-pilot, who probably to this day doesn’t know how close he came to being yanked out of manned aviation. I spent the next eight years fighting the war from a metal box in the States. It can be best described as 98% of the time the most boring job you’ll ever do, to the 2% of the most exciting and satisfying job you’ll ever love.
Long, weird hours dominated my life. My wife would say that I was a complete zombie and even worse I was absent from life even if I was physically there. Her challenge was attempting to keep two kids under the age of three quiet when I was working mid-shift. I was flying a complex airplane in some of the world’s most complicated and sensitive airspaces. I became an instructor and evaluator, building a reputation as a polished launch and recovery pilot (takeoff and landing). Not all pilots were qualified. Most flew mission legs after the plane took off. Although I was flying, an instructor, and an evaluator, it still wasn’t the same. I maintained my desire to begin flying manned airplanes in some capacity; I just wasn’t sure how I could make it happen.
After several years on staff at the major command and the unfortunate result of my lieutenant colonel promotion board, I began to look to my future outside of the Air Force. Flying is always at the top of the list. I began using my GI Bill to finish my CFI; I termed it as getting back to flying “real” airplanes. My CFI at the aero club was a navigator just like me and we shared the same passion and goals. After some quick math when we first got together, I figured that it had been eleven years since I had last flown a “real” manned airplane. We worked at the certificate and knocked off the rust, which surprisingly came off pretty easily. The joy of flying returned the desire to go back to where I was at the beginning of my career and ready to take the next step in my life. For most, the CFI certificate is a young pilot’s first chance to have other people pay for their flying as they are now a gatekeeper to the world of aviation. I take that privilege with immense gratitude and humility.
From navigating to teaching.
I seized the opportunity to leave active duty service this year and move over to the Air National Guard to go back to flying in real (manned) airplanes – I think that it’s important to maintain the precise distinction from flying versus flying-in airplanes as a crew member. So now, as I finish up my last five years of military service, I excitedly work toward the post military life where I can continue to pursue the dream that I first began some 21 years ago. As a newly minted CFI, I’ve already had the opportunity to introduce flying to guys who now pursue the same goals that so many of us began with years ago or just now. The airlines may not be the path I take, but one thing that I’ve learned over the years is that things rarely work out the way we envision.
Now, I’d like to take a moment to describe my experience conundrum that I’m facing in order to follow my dream and still support my family of five. Out of the gate, I could say that I have 3,500 hours of aviation experience. If you asked me how many hours of PIC I have, I would tell you about 2,600 hours. But if you asked the FAA how much total time I have, it would be a mere 300 plus hours, because they specifically exclude any remote pilot time.
In those 3,500 hours, I have time crossing the North Atlantic, talking on HF radios, flying across the Mediterranean and the Middle East. I can give an oceanic position report like nobody’s business. So to sell myself as an experienced aviator is big task; working as a part-time CFI is a slow go. But, I’m well prepared to build the real time required to become a self-supporting professional pilot. I’m not sure what my future looks like. I am some time away from the ATP and I don’t qualify for any reduction in the 1,500 hours required.
What will my career in aviation look like? I can’t say “some day” now. My time is here to be a pilot, an instructor, and mentor to young pilots-to-be. I want to relish in the journey of life. I look forward to plugging into the aviation community in my new city. I now have the tools to help others while building time for my goals. I think about the different routes I could take: corporate, 135, or I could even be a career instructor. Every path offers different advantages and challenges to making a living as a pilot. The challenges of the pilot shortage that the industry faces is also captured at the micro level as individuals like me look at the unconventional road to become a hirable, professional pilot.

Alaska (No. 2)
Indigenous people have lived in Alaska for thousands of years, and it is widely believed that the region served as the entry point for the initial settlement of North America by way of the Bering land bridge. The Russian Empire was the first to actively colonize the area beginning in the 18th century, eventually establishing Russian America, which spanned most of the current state and promoted and maintained a native Alaskan Creole population. The expense and logistical difficulty of maintaining this distant possession prompted its sale to the U.S. in 1867 for US$7.2 million (equivalent to $157 million in 2023). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Abundant natural resources have enabled Alaska—with one of the smallest state economies—to have one of the highest per capita incomes, with commercial fishing, and the extraction of natural gas and oil, dominating Alaska's economy. U.S. Armed Forces bases and tourism also contribute to the economy; more than half of the state is federally-owned land containing national forests, national parks, and wildlife refuges. It is among the most irreligious states, one of the first to legalize recreational marijuana, and is known for its libertarian-leaning political culture, generally supporting the Republican Party in national elections. The Indigenous population of Alaska is proportionally the second highest of any U.S. state, at over 15 percent, after only Hawaii.

How Activating Your Body's Cell Repair Processes Can Improve Your Health and Well-Being
youtube
By Dr. Mercola
Naomi Whittel is the former CEO of Twinlab and has written an interesting book about how to achieve radiant health by activating your body's natural autophagy processes. In "Glow 15: A Science-Based Plan to Lose Weight, Revitalize Your Skin, and Invigorate Your Life," she shares a number of valuable strategies for doing this naturally. Her deep-rooted interest in healthy living was an outgrowth of her lifelong struggle with eczema, an autoimmune deficiency.
"The inflammatory process just ravaged my body," she says. "My skin would bleed, it would pus. My parents were so conscious, they would even be aware of the kinds of material I would wear because our skin needs to breathe — it's our largest organ — and the foods that I ate. I was born on a biodynamic farm, and yet this autoimmune disorder and so many [other health problems] that I developed over time controlled my life.
So, I have always been trained to eat specific foods and drink certain types of water. My parents never let me have fluoridated water. I was never vaccinated. So much thought went into what I was putting on and into my body, and yet I couldn't squelch the inflammation. When I was in my midteens, I would constantly cover myself with long sleeves, kind of like what I'm doing today. But it wasn't for the same reasons.
I would cover myself because I was so ashamed of what I really looked like. It was the spring dance, and there was a boy that I really wanted to go to the spring dance with. My mother said to me at that time, 'You know, you shouldn't always cover yourself.
You have a lot of friends. You can have some more self-confidence.' I listened to her, and I wore short sleeves and shorts. My skin was exposed, and he got a glimpse of me, and he didn't invite me. That was a defining moment, because I had been so rejected by the way I looked."
From Natural to Conventional and Back
Following that spring dance rejection, Whittel decided to try the conventional route for a change. For a time, she used steroids to control her eczema, but the side effects prompted her to return to her all-natural roots. In her early 20s, she was able to eliminate about 95 percent of her eczema using a combination of Chinese herbs, acupuncture and fasting to detox.
Alas, when she was preparing for pregnancy a few years later, she discovered she had heavy metal toxicity, which her doctor attributed to the Chinese herbs she had taken, due to the soil they were grown in and the way they were processed.
"I had poisoned my body through these herbs that had been so therapeutic," she says. "That was the other defining moment for me. I decided I needed to know, from that moment forward, exactly where things came from. So, I started the process of always going to the source … Ultimately, I built a company called Reserveage, where we aimed to find where things come from.
I started with the polyphenols, the antioxidants, that come from the red wine grape, and I searched all over the world for the grapes that had the highest levels of these different polyphenols, including resveratrol … I ultimately landed in Bordeaux, where the organic and biodynamic vineyards are so rich in these powerful nutrients.
I was in Calabria, Italy, when I first started to really learn about the citrus bergamot fruit. The researchers over there were teaching me about drinking whole citrus bergamot tea. The lead researcher, Dr. Elzbieta Janda, was drinking four or five cups of this every day, and while I was there, I was doing that with her. I asked her, 'Why?' … She said to me, 'I use it to activate my autophagy.' That was the first time I had heard the word."
"Auto" in Greek means "self," and "phagy" means "to eat," so autophagy refers to a self-eating process in which your body digests damaged cells. It's basically a cleaning-out process that encourages the proliferation of new, healthy cells. Reserveage, which was later sold to Twinlab, was founded on the principle that each and every ingredient is carefully sourced and processed in such a way to ensure the highest quality and purity possible.
This includes doing soil testing and working with the farmers and middlemen to understand and clean up each step of the process from farm to bottle. Unfortunately, few companies actually invest the time and resources necessary to do this. "It surprises me, because it's a disconnect," Whittel says. "Ultimately, there's so many things that can go wrong along the way."
Fish Oil's Dirty Little Secret
Whittel recently worked with Jeff Bland, Ph.D., on a trip to Alaska to investigate the manufacturing of cod liver oil. "For me personally, fish oil is an important part of my health. Because of my autoimmune disorders, I grew up drinking a little shot every morning of cod liver oil … But when I built my company, Reserveage, I never could find a source other than krill, that I was comfortable bringing out into the market," she says. What's the problem with most fish oil? Whittel explains:
"What happens is the fish are caught in large nets. Even if you think the fish oil is coming from Norway or Europe, it's caught in Central and South America in these large nets. The fish are then brought onto and thrown into the bottom of the boat … [where] they go completely rancid. They're just left there. By the time they get to Europe, the guts are so rancid that in order to get the omega-3s out, they have to go through a process of extracting these poisons and this rancidity.
[In the end], you're left with something that has none of the cofactors. It's been so heavily contaminated to clean out the rancidity that if you want to get any of the benefits of the vitamin A or vitamin D, they have to be added back. So, there's a huge disconnect … When I learned about this, it just ruined my relationship to fish oils."
Finding Pure Cod Liver Oil
Bland told her he'd partnered with David Little, an engineer and fisherman who owns six large fishing boats in Alaska. Little built and implemented a flash freeze process on his boats. As soon as the cod are caught, they're flash frozen. The fish are sold to the Japanese, but they weren't doing anything with the livers and guts of the fish, which is where the fish oils are extracted from. So, Bland and Little partnered up to extract the fish oils from the fish guts, while the rest of the fish gets shipped off to Japan.
The beauty of this process is that it preserves the specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) in the oil — many of which are powerful anti-inflammatory components — along with the vitamin A and D. "I was able to literally take the oil right out of the processing equipment and drink it, right there in the factory," Whittel says. "It smells fresh, and it [tastes] good. That's why I, for the first time in my career, felt confident enough to bring a cod liver oil into the market … There's nothing like it, from a cod liver perspective, out there."
This story is just one cautionary story of many, showing you really need to do your homework when it comes to food and supplements. Whittel estimates about 98 percent of the omega-3 products on the market are inferior due to the way the fish are caught and processed.
Aside from this Twinlab cod liver oil, krill is another excellent source of marine-based omega-3 fats. Contrary to cod, krill are also a far more sustainable source of these valuable oils. You can learn more about the safeguards in place to ensure the sustainability of krill in this previous krill article.
The Importance of Cyclical Autophagy
Like myself, Whittel also reached the conclusion that it is important to cycle many lifestyle choices to improve your health. For her, it began with the intuitive understanding that cells are either building or detoxing, and each phase has its own requirements. Fasting, meaning abstaining from food altogether, turned out to be a crucial component that ultimately allowed her to control the inflammation in her body, and she's been doing cyclical fasting for nearly 25 years.
Again, one of the things fasting does is activate autophagy, your body's cleanout process that cleanses and detoxifies the cell and recycles the parts of the organelles that are no longer needed, so that your cells behave more youthfully. But autophagy cannot remain continuously activated all the time. You also need to allow the cells to rebuild and rejuvenate, which occurs during the refeeding phase.
In her search for experts on autophagy, Whittel came across the work of Dr. Richard Wang, a dermatologist and autophagy expert, Dr. Beth Levine, whose focus is on exercise, and William A. Dunn, Ph.D., at the University of Florida, who has been researching autophagy for 30 years, among others. She then put together a protocol to build up her own health.
" … David Sinclair at Harvard … was sharing with me a lot of the insights around how we can reduce the impact of these accelerated agers. When you look at all the ways that we age — the effects of the DNA impact, the inflammation, the telomere shortening, all of these things — autophagy and the way that autophagy slows down as we age due to these accelerated agers, is at the foundation of the way we age.
So being able to activate [autophagy], and then also deactivate it, is something that is fundamental to the aging process. 'Glow15' is that protocol. What was so fascinating, when I first did it on myself, was that my energy skyrocketed. I increased my lean muscle mass and reduced my body mass index by about 6 percent, so I went from 24 to 18 percent [body fat].
I wasn't doing anything other than activating my autophagy. My energy, my mental focus, my sleep improved, and I just felt so much better. And I looked younger, for sure, so everyone in my world said, 'Hey, what are you doing?' Then I started to try it on my friends and family. Then some of my friends at Jacksonville University, some of the researchers there, said, 'Why don't we create a lifestyle study?'
So, we took a group of 35 participants, and we put them through this lifestyle. Every single participant achieved results … in 15 days, and that's how the book got the name 'Glow15.' They lost weight, they reduced their fine lines and wrinkles … they got off medications. It was truly remarkable, the benefits. So that's how the protocol was developed."
How to Activate Autophagy
So just how do you go about activating your body's autophagy mechanism? Here's a summary of four of the 11 strategies detailed in her book:
1. Intermittent fasting coupled with protein cycling (IFPC) — Intermittent fasting every other day (16 hours of not eating, which is the time needed to activate autophagy, and eight hours of scheduled eating). On days when you're not doing the intermittent fasting, eat the regular amount of protein you would normally consume, and on your intermittent fasting day, cut protein to about 5 percent of your calories for the day.
"So, for somebody like me who would normally eat about 45 to 50 grams of protein … [on low protein days] I'll take about 5 percent of my overall caloric intake, which is about 25 grams of protein," Whittel explains.
2. Timing of nutrients — Eat fats first and carbohydrates last, whether you're intermittently fasting or not.
"On a low [protein] day, when you've done an intermittent fast, your first meal will be about fat, and fat first. Then at the end of the day, you'll have carbohydrates, and we talk about the quality carbohydrates that we need for health.
Also, when you're eating carbs later on in the day, in the evening as your last meal, you're getting all of the benefits, from recovery to helping you relax and get ready to go to sleep. So, fat first and carbs last is my second principle," Whittel says.
3. Cyclical exercise — Every other day, do 30 minutes of high-intensity interval training or resistance training. "It could be as simple as walking faster for a minute and then slowing down, and doing that back and forth for 30 minutes. Resistance training could even be doing yoga," she says. "It's that acute stress, that good stress, that has a beneficial impact on autophagy."
4. Eat more autophagy-activating foods — Whittel includes 140 different types of foods that help activate autophagy — such as citrus bergamot tea, green tea and turmeric — and different ones are recommended depending on whether you're doing intermittent fasting and low protein that day or not. For example, on a fasting, low-protein day, she recommends removing the egg white (the high-protein part) when eating eggs. On nonfasting, high-protein days, eat both the egg white and the yolk.
Cyclical Autophagy Activation Is Crucial for Optimal Health and Longevity
"In 2016, the Nobel Prize in medicine was given to the Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi for his research around autophagy … It's going to be such a big part of our health and well-being over the next decade, and now the research is really starting to come together," she says. Her book is an outgrowth of diving into the available research, so to learn more about autophagy and how to activate this rejuvenating process, be sure to pick up a copy of "Glow15."

Fit-again Vic Manuel earns Player of the Week nod for leading Alaska surge
WITH his knee issues now a thing of the past, Vic Manuel is back to his explosive self, helping Alaska stretch its winning run to six this past week in the PBA Philippine Cup.
‘The Muscleman’ averaged solid numbers of 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals off the bench to power Alaska past Phoenix and GlobalPort, respectively, earning the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week for the period of January 29 to February 4.
The stocky Manuel, who was hampered by knee issues last year, showed mobility and strength as evident in his 21-point, 5-rebound effort in Alaska’s thrilling 105-98 overtime win over GlobalPort Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
The 6-foot-4 Manuel followed up his pair of free throws with an inside stab in the extra period to frustrate the Batang Pier, who blew a 13-point lead in the third period, leading to their fourth loss in seven matches.
Prior to their match against GlobalPort, Manuel logged in 10 points and grabbed three rebounds in another off-the-bench role as Alaska routed Phoenix, 93-75 in a lopsided contest.
Alaska, which started the season with back-to-back losses, has won its last six matches to occupy joint second place with Magnolia, just half a game behind pacesetter San Miguel (6-1) in the race for the two twice-to-beat incentives.
The 30-year-old Manuel bested teammates Calvin Abueva and Chris Banchero, Kelly Williams and Jayson Castro of TNT, Rain or Shine’s Beau Belga, Chris Tiu and Ed Daquioag, SMB’s Chris Ross, Chico Lanete and Fajardo, NLEX’s Cyrus Baguio and Larry Fonacier as well as Magnolia guard Mark Barroca for the weekly citation.
Alaska takes a weeklong respite before swinging back to action on Sunday against NLEX at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Business of Loyalty: How Hotels Build Loyalty Beyond the Stay
Whale watching in Akureyri Fjord, Iceland is just one of thousands of tours and activities people can find via PlacePass, a metasearch platform for tours and activities. Marriott has invested in the company as part of its larger effort to deliver memorable experiences to loyalty members. Zeb Goodman / PlacePass
Skift Take: If travel really is all about the experiences, travel companies — with or without loyalty programs — better do all they can to make sure our experiences aren’t just good, but great.
— Deanna Ting
Editor’s Note: Skift’s Business Traveler newsletter is now the Business of Loyalty newsletter.
In this weekly missive, we’ll bring you the same insight into what matters most to the people who travel for a living, but now with an added focus on how airlines, hotels, and credit card programs battle for their attention and their business — a points geek with a Ph.D. of sorts.
While we are still looking at how these moves impact the consumer, the focus is on what the industry is doing to win their loyalty. The newsletter is being written by Grant Martin, who you’ve come to know as the author of our Business Traveler newsletter over the last three years. He’ll be able to take advantage of contributions from Skift editors including Brian Sumers (airlines) and Deanna Ting (hotels) to better explain what’s happening with loyalty right now. We hope you’ll stick with it, and we promise to never devalue your reading experience.
Today we’re taking a look at one of the biggest pillars of modern hotel loyalty programs: experiences.
Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) pioneered the concept years ago when it launched SPG Moments, which gave its SPG members exclusive access to one-of-a-kind and, in some cases, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that were only possible by being an elite member of the SPG program.
Today, nearly every hotel loyalty program out there also focuses on offering these special experiences for their members. And now that Marriott International owns Starwood and, therefore, SPG, we’re already seeing that influence play out in Marriott Rewards as well. Just recently, Marriott Rewards and SPG announced they would be launching Master Classes, special learning experiences that members can have with celebrities and leaders in the realms of sports, food, and entertainment. Earlier this year, the company also invested in PlacePass, a sort of metasearch for tours and activities, and last year, Marriott Rewards launched its own version of SPG Moments, called the Marriott Experiences Marketplace.
Why is everyone so focused on experiences these days? In a lot of ways, loyalty programs and hotel brands aren’t just preoccupied with the guest experience on site. They want to be more involved and play a larger role in the travel experience overall.
“Loyalty has always been about more than just spending nights in our hotels,” David Flueck, senior vice president of global loyalty for Marriott International, told Skift. “It’s about creating incredible travel experiences for our guests. There’s no better place to experience the world than within our portfolio. There’s no limit to the places our members can see and the experiences they can have. Travel, more broadly, has always been about enriching the soul, meeting new people, seeing new places, and learning on your travels. To tie into their experiences has always been core to our program.”
And a big part of being able to offer these kinds of once-in-a-lifetime experiences has a lot to do with the establishment of formal loyalty and rewards programs. Without those programs, it would no doubt be very difficult for a hotel company like Marriott, Hilton, or InterContinental Hotels Group to reach those guests and market the right kinds of experiences to them — not to mention know exactly what kind of pillow they prefer.
But what about travel companies that don’t have a formal loyalty or rewards program? Think Airbnb, Uber, or Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts. How do they keep customers loyal to their brands and personalize the experiences for their customers without those programs? We talked to some loyalty experts about that as well.
Whether or not a hotel or travel company has a formal loyalty program, the bottom line is that any business, regardless of industry, needs loyal customers.
— Deanna Ting, Hospitality Editor

Why Not Having a Formal Travel Loyalty Program Works — For Some
Not every travel business needs to have a formal loyalty or rewards program to have loyal customers. But if you’re going to go that route, you better know what you’re getting into. And for some companies, it might be time to reconsider doing without.
Many Airline Passengers Still Prefer Interacting With Employees Instead of Technology
It’s 2017. According to SITA, 98 percent of airline passengers fly with at least one mobile device. It’s amazing that so many passengers still prefer to the face-to-face experience at airports. It’s a lot slower than self-service, and often less effective.
