ygo5dsmonth/Week 2024 Day 4 - iDuel
Since the prompt is music, I thought we could talk about the visuals in the 5D's openings maybe? So here are my favorite parts, and some things I noticed in general
Opening 1 Kizuna
The beginning with the Signers, Godwin and the dragon marks looks super cool. Too bad I don't like the music that goes along with it, haha. A little Jack and Yusei heavy, but it's alright, at least the side characters get time to shine too
Opening 2 Last Train
It's soooo good, a like practically everything here. The new characters and monsters get presented well, and everyone has some solid screen presence. The coolest parts are the view of the Dark Signers in their lair, Kiryu appearing on his D-Wheel, and the Signers at the end (the Dark Signers look cooler though, sorry fellas)
Only thing that bothers me is how Godwin shows up so little in the opening, he's (barely) more in the ending ffs, and he's the final villain of this arc. I know that was a twisted plot twist and I'm the only one who cares, but still
Opening 3 Freedom
Phew, the opening wastes no time to tell you that this is the Yusei/Jack/Crow show now, Rua, Ruka and Aki get into the back right now! And if you're focusing so heavily on the boys at least let them do something other than standing/driving casually, you're not really hyping me up like this OP. Fun fact: this was the first japanese opeining the german dub decided to leave in, after they started dubbing the 4kids version and did their own synchro
Sherry's face looks fuckin weird in this
Why should I care about the stupid WRGP (You're a grand prick!) again? Sigh, tournaments for the sole sake of getting better at something work better before you save the world from certain doom (but that's a writing problem not an opening problem)
The Majestic/Savior dragons look cool at least, and I like that this sequence kinda mirrors the dragons from Last Train, just in their evolved forms
Opening 4 Believe in Nexus
The villains get to look cool for a hot minute, damn. Although Lucciano is the only one with rollerblades, so him sliding and everything makes sense. The other two...are robots and ignore how uncomfortable this should be
Sherry too? They must feel really sorry for having to remove her from the plot
Ally of Justice monsters, so scary! Isn't that the archetype that only ever had one good monster, a generic synchro? But of course everyone has to be dumbass in this arc and plays light monsters, which Ally of Justice is strong against
Opening 5 Road to Tomorrow-Going My Way!!
This is intense as you can see on the two exclamation marks in the title. At long last the other Signers get to be something other than background filler. Also it's so fuckin funny how Yusei and Crow roll out all their Synchros, even those they don't use anymore
and meanwhile Jack...
I refuse to play anything besides Red Demon's Dragon!!!
Jack: Man, I'm sure gonna miss to have someone to stand on rooftops with, once Arc V rolls arround

how did Ishi'li's tooooootally not romantic "it's just speculation!!" feelings for Kizuna develop? >:)
was there an "oh" moment? who asked the other out? (speculatively, of course jsdbvjsfkdvbsdfk)
blows you a platonic SMOOCH for your patience !!!!!
So for ISHI, because somehow I know how Kizuna felt better than how Ishi felt- (oops, the reason this took so long as that I was having to pin down the my side of things, haha!) - they didn’t start really catchin’ proper feelings until, like. Heavensward. And they didn’t talk about it! Shit was happening- there was a war, and Kizuna has this whole, personal business, they’ve kept each other at vague length and then they’re sharing a room together (in the Fortemp’s Manor) and there was only one bed
There wasn’t really any particular ‘Oh’ moment that I can think of, despite having racked my brain- it’s a lot of small things, I think? He’s strong and capable, they fight well together, Ishi picks up Astromancy to cover their healing blind spot because they can’t Scholar (their aether too thin to summon, haha. 😳)
Speculatively 😉 Ishi tries to ask Kizuna out first officially, in Shadowbringers. After Kizuna’s taken on His Majesties Light… when the night floods Il Mheg and it’s so beautiful.. there’s dancing, and celebrating, and. Kizuna asks, in sign, for them to wait. Until he can say it back and mean it. (Every word, but the Light Aether is corrupting his body, slowly, slowly. His face a solemn immobile mask, his fingers smooth, cold marble, his emotions blotted out. He keeps going on Devotion To The Cause and his own commitment to what he thinks his old self would do.) :’) So
When everyone is safe! When the Crystarium is celebrating! When the night is back for good, and there’s drinks late into the night, these two idiots sneak off to one of the towers where it’s quieter and have a real proper confession there ;v; ……… speculatively ;)
Also thank you ! For your patience ;w;’ id been ruminating on this question and then all the weather happened and I lowkey FORGORT,,, and then it took me a lil more time cos I wanted to get screenshots >_>; I am scattering flower petals all over thank you for the juicy ask 🌸‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Here's a couple bonus screens I couldn't figure out where to put; I kinda did it as a warm up for The Boys tm while rotating what I actually was plannin to do awejkfnakwjfe
[Shaders are all Neneko's Gameplay Essence, except this very last one, which is Ixora's Ordinary]
Kizuna belongs to my husband @zombiesockfuckinglovescardfight (he also helps me bang out the timelines because I have applesauce instead of brains sometimes =w=') [The shot from inside the Fortemp's house is ! Actually Ishi's FC room, we put a lotta thought into the whole, mess of it, lol. There's only one bed but they end up dragging a bunch of blankets and the couch closer to the fire because Ishi just. Gets so so cold. It's in Aether-Siren-Empyreum- plot 26 ward 4 if you're interested! Chuu's workshop is also here uvu]
#Aaaaaa!!!!!!#Ask Game#The slippery slope of 'Oh no it took me so long to answer this I should do something extra to make up for the time spent' vs#Doing something extra made it take EVEN LONGER to answer ! Can I ask you another question? This happens to be just an overall view I see from the Digimon community, but why are the personalities of the Digidestined seem almost offensive or wrong to so many people when it comes to Digimon Tri?
I know it may seem inconsistent with the Digidestined from Adventure all the way to Kizuna with Tri thrown in there, but Tri focused more on the negative aspects of a Digidestined’s personality.
Back in there teenage years it to me makes more sense they are showing inconsistencies in character as they are all trying to find out who they are. They are inbetween being children and adults and they are allowed to make mistakes or show that side of themselves at a more extreme level.
Sure it’s kept in check with the other series but raging hormone filled teenagers have to make those mistakes (or learn from others so they don’t repeat them) in order to build character and grow is refreshing and helps. E have more empathy for them.
Aside from their personalities this is what made Digimon so enticing. So that being said, in light of this do you still think that Digimon Tri did each Digidestined a disservice by portraying them as really people that they are nowhere near as?
Tri does get a lot of flack and rightfully so, but this part shouldn’t be one of those reasons.
Sorry for the long winded question. It was only fair I delivered it in context for your answer though.
My ask box is always open and I'm always interested in discussions like this, it doesn't matter if it's a bit more lengthy, because that helps me to understand where you come from yourself a bit better.
Admittedly, I do have my own personal "vendetta" with the way Tri is constructed in several ways - I have my issues with the pacing, the number of plot points, parts of the fanservice, the way the 02 cast was handled... However, I tried to bring up some positivity the other day by listing the majority of my favourite moments (and as I browse through my screenshot folder, there may actually be more I didn't immediately remember).
There are things that grind my gears - but I agree that not everything deserves flack.
My main problem with the characterization and arcs of the characters was mostly that it did feel like "recycled" conflict. Which, as you said yourself, is not NECESSARILY a bad thing, as we're all human, we all have our moments of regression and self-doubt. It IS relatable. There's a reason why this Jyoumi moment is one of my favourites after all:
On the other hand, I simply couldn't shake the feeling that Tri would have worked better if it had taken place between 01 and 02 - or if 02 hadn't existed in this universe in the first place. Because a lot of the conflict and development would have made a lot more sense if it had happened between 01 and 02, simply due to the fact that the majority of the characters already seemed WAY more mature in 02 despite their ages. I understand that writing characters consistently after 02 must have been incredibly difficult because of that - but witnessing Jyou as serene and confident and Yamato as open and dorky as they were in 02, just to see Yamato turn a lot more cold again and Jyou losing a lot of his self-efficacy all over again was just a bit disappointing. And in terms of Koushirou, I just didn't like how MUCH emphasis they put on his "hormones", it took them almost three movies for him to feel like an important character again and he deserves so much more than that. Yes, he had his good moments before that, of course! But he lost a lot of his dignity on his way there (at least in my opinion). It's just not nice to ignore the development they already went through.
I tried to summarize that once in a post before, I hope this will make a little bit more sense!
Upon rewatching a lot of scenes again, I may argue that Taichi (and in parts Sora) was the one I could make most sense of in his/their Tri portrayals after analyzing it for a while - even if their conflicts repeated themselves. I have written several analysis posts on Taichi regressing due to him getting older and struggling to find his path, prioritizing and making difficult decisions to maintain balance and unity, mourning the loss of his "younger self" being more daring (see for example here and here). Sora deals with similar issues after all, as she also struggles with her sense of self, obligation and femininity, unsure whether she can and should make decisions for herself, as a Chosen Child and/or the daughter of an iemoto and that is why she HAS to make uncomfortable (and sometimes even wrong) decisions (see here, here, here and here).
I love Digimon for how deeply I can analyze these characters and, as mentioned, the regressing is human and realistic after all - but at some point, I would just like to see them succeed and overcome their conflicts to at least some degree. Digimon never shied away from NOT writing happy ends for their characters - but with all the suffering they put Taichi through (just for example), it would be almost cruel not to see him get his personal closure at some point.

Can you do Lucky 38 for the Spotify Wrapped thing?
38. I Do Adore by Mindy Gledhill
TheRuFumi :D
Love had never been something Naofumi expected to feel so strongly. But it had happened, and now, so much time after the first glance, he couldn't even bring himself to dislike it.
The three of them were all so different and yet so alike on some points, but it just made him love them even more.
He'd really fallen hard. Honestly, L'Arc could send him one of his bright-as-the-sun grins that would light up the whole building, or Therese could give him one of her soft and gentle smiles that would make anyone feel warm inside, and Naofumi would feel his knees go weak and his cheeks heat up.
Sometimes, even if it wasn't cold at all, and the sun would be high in the sky, small beams filtering through the leaves on the forest trees, Naofumi would glance over at L'Arc and Therese walking beside him, and upon seeing the tiny sunbeams on their smiling faces, would pull his hood, hiding his blush. When asked, he would say it was so he didn't get the sun in his eyes, before quickening his walk. As he would hear their chuckles behind him, he'd let a small smile slip onto his lips.
But, it wasn't only when they smiled or grinned or these small ethereal moments that made him love them. It was the little things too.
One morning,
"Kiddo, morning! Did you sleep well?" L'Arc grinned from his place at the kitchen counter, with a cutting board and some world-native fruit in front of him, and a kitchen knife in hand.
Naofumi knew what he must've looked like, with morning hair and bags under his sleep-bleary eyes, clothes wrinkled and haphazardly put on. He nodded sleepily at L'Arc's question.
"Naofumi! Good morning! We were just finishing breakfast for everyone. Would you like the first plate, since everyone else is asleep?" Therese asked, standing behind the fantasy-world stove run by magic.
"Mhm." He wasn't awake enough to form coherent sentences yet, but he could still give a little smile
As he sat down by the table, it seemed L'Arc and Therese's smiles had become even brighter
"Naofumi, did you perhaps spend the night making new jewelry again?" Therese asked as she started moving whatever was on the pan onto a large plate instead.
"Mmnnggnh" Naofumi groaned in lieu of an answer.
He watched as Therese swiftly moved around the kitchen, putting things away in a corner to be washed later, and moving the finished breakfast to another spot on the counter to have it together. L'Arc was almost done easily cutting the fruit, and Therese went over with a bucket to throw the peels and stems in as L'Arc finished the last fruit, throwing it into the bowl in front of him.
All too swift and quickly and naturally, as if they'd done or practiced it before.
"Kiddo, you need to get some proper rest for once. If you keep this up we'll just have to cuddle you to keep you on the bed." L'Arc said as he went to wash his hands. Kizuna's house may have been a little more modernized than the rest of the world, but she had yet to figure out a working sewer system and were to lead it, so for now, they still had just two buckets. Or for the worst of it, with just water, and one with water a soap.
Naofumi couldn't help but stare at L'Arc's hands as he washed them, with a few scars and nicks here and there, and callouses from wielding his scythe for years and fighting, hands now so strong after so long.
Suddenly, a plate was placed in front of Naofumi, ripping his thoughts away from L'Arc's pretty hands, to Therese now standing beside him.
Her hair was braided differently today, now in a tighter, neater one down her back, instead of the usual comfortable one over her shoulder, and the jewel in her forehead shone brightly in the morning sun through the windows, just like her smile.
Naofumi's eyes flittered between the two, as they got their own plates and sat down on each side of him at the large round table, Therese to the left, and L'Arc to the right. The two were smiling and making eye contact as if having a silent conversation as they ate.
After a few minutes of silent eating and Naofumi greatly enjoying their prepared meal, the two turned their eyes to Naofumi, just as he looked back up at them.
The two smiled brightly, eyes filled with something Naofumi dearly hopes he had guessed right on, and Naofumi know that if he'd been standing at that moment, his knees would've given out, and he'd be a blushing mess of a shield hero puddle on the ground.
He smiled back, eyes filled with nothing but adoration.
#they're in love your honor#the rising of the shield hero#rising of the shield hero#naofumi iwatani#l'arc berg#therese alexandrite#therufumi#omg they're so in love and so soft I'm so glad it was this song because I just got to wrote them being all soft and in love#therufumi prompt#shield hero#therufumi short#spotify wrapped#spotify wrapped inspired

So if you’ve known Digimon Adventure for long enough, you’ll know that it has some very strict color-coding for its characters thanks to the Crests: Taichi with orange, Yamato with blue, Sora with red, Koushirou with purple, Mimi with green, Jou with grey, Takeru with yellow, and Hikari with pink. There’s also a very strict “order” of characters, which is exactly the order above (it’s the order in which we saw their Digimon’s first evolution, and in the second ED). The franchise has followed this with strict consistency for almost the entire time since Adventure’s airing (it took until a little after 02 for the order to completely solidify, but after that it basically hasn’t budged). For Tamers fans, the order for the main three characters has also been consistent -- although there are rare exceptions, it’s pretty much always Takato, Jian, and Ruki in that order, associated with their D-Ark colors red, green, and blue respectively.
On the flip side, 02 and Frontier have been...decidedly less straightforward. Things like color coding and character ordering probably don’t matter much to the average viewer, but for fanartists (like @digitalgate02 and @demonoflight, who graciously assisted in helping me write the rest of this post), this can easily drive a person absolutely nuts. However, thanks to DigiFes 2022 and other surrounding events, these questions have finally been cleared up!...Maybe.
Let’s take a look at the history of 02 and Frontier’s color handling and ordering (with some bonus series thrown in)!
02
So as I said earlier, generally speaking, the Adventure order and coloring has been very straightforward, and when you involve Adventure and 02 in a group of twelve, the order for that has been consistent for the most part after 02′s airing: Taichi, Yamato, Sora, Koushirou, Mimi, Jou, Takeru, Hikari, Daisuke, Ken, Miyako, Iori. (This ordering has basically all been all but completely solidified on the Kizuna website and in most Kizuna promotional materials thereof.) That said, things get a little more complicated once we talk about the 02 group specifically, especially because of Ken’s unusual position -- usually “latecomer party members” are added on at the end, but Ken ends up in a right-hand man position to Daisuke in terms of the story, so it feels a little awkward to tack him on in the end like that. If you go by rough order of “evolution introduction” for the series, that implies a Daisuke-Miyako-Iori-Takeru-Hikari-Ken order, but other materials have offered a “Jogress order” (Daisuke-Ken-Miyako-Hikari-Iori-Takeru) or “original order but with Ken moved up” (Daisuke-Ken-Miyako-Iori-Takeru-Hikari).
Things get even trickier when you get to figuring out their image colors. You could try doing the Crest colors (orange and blue for Daisuke, pink...? for Ken, red and green for Miyako, purple and grey for Iori, yellow for Takeru, and pink for Hikari). But not only does this cause overlap with Ken and Hikari both having pink of some kind, it’s also just not very good for design and merch, due to the lopsided nature of three of its members having two colors while the others have three (the Kizuna website attempts it, but only on the character square borders).
The seemlingly easiest and most straightforward one to use is the D-3 colors (blue for Daisuke, black/grey for Ken, red for Miyako, yellow for Iori, green for Takeru, pink for Hikari), and we do have quite a bit of precedent on this one, most notably in 02′s second ED. Unfortunately, this color scheme comes with one major issue: grey isn’t exactly a very easy color to use in design, especially for merch. (Jou merchandise struggles with this issue a lot, and it’s really only offset by the fact he’s surrounded by a whole seven others to make the impact less noticeable, plus the fact it’s explicitly a light grey, unlike Ken’s dark grey and black D-3.) Ken’s D-3 remaining black was a very important symbol of his penance in-series, but it makes merchandise making a bit tricky. It also is not very easy to use for shiny glowy things, and even this same ED struggles with that:
...yeah. (White is never used for Ken anywhere else.)
And then there’s the fact Ken’s Wormmon is associated with being the “green” side of Paildramon, and Daisuke and Ken’s Jogress D-3 combo is blue and green...but because the other combo colors (red/white and yellow/white) aren’t really ones that are easy to make hard matchups with, it’s still hard to say that there was any hard association with green and Ken back in 02, especially since that makes it more complicated with Takeru.
Even Kizuna struggled with this for a bit. The movie shows Takeru with a yellow phone case, in a context where the other five members of the 02 group have cases matching their original D-3s, but in all other contexts -- promotional art, merchandise, the card game, the character song album -- it’s back to green, matching with his D-3. But there is merch that associates Takeru with yellow, his Crest color, overlapping him with Iori...and giving Ken green. Generally speaking, it’s understandable that any context with all twelve Tokyo Chosen Children will have to have a color overlap somewhere, but Takeru particularly sticks out as one they don’t really know what to do with.
(Note that the card game’s backing colors don’t apply; the card game’s mechanics are tied to its own set colors, which means that characters are placed in there for reasons closer to their Digimon’s archetype than their own original series image colors.)
However, starting with the Kizuna character song albums (technically also the concurrently-released Digimon Stitches, but that one also had a contradictory palette in the same set), it seems like recent merch (especially in relation to the upcoming movie) is finally consistent about color -- but what’s interesting is that Takeru is now orange. That was never used in 02. That wasn’t even used up until 2021!
The theme behind the new colors seems to be, quite simply, their partners’ colors (V-mon’s blue, Wormmon’s green, Hawkmon’s red, Armadimon’s yellow, Patamon’s orange, and either the pink from Tailmon’s ears or Angewomon). This does seem to be in line with the angle taken in both Kizuna and the new movie that this group is rather unusually close with their partners, possibly even more so than their seniors. The benefit of this color scheme is that, with there being a consistent baseline for all six of them, there’s now proper justification for Ken being associated with green, while also not putting Takeru in an awkward position.
These colors were used for the official DigiFes 2022 penlight, which explicitly lists the following colors as the kids’ “image colors”: "light blue" for Daisuke, "red" for Miyako, "yellow" for Iori, "orange" for Takeru, "light pink" for Hikari, and "green" for Ken.
Perhaps acknowledging the truly chaotic nature of this issue (probably fitting when this group is concerned), the Karatez collab firmly, undeniably associates these colors with the original 02 kids instead of just the Kizuna-era ones, but also strings a bunch of other colors here and there to reference their other associations: Daisuke’s orange glasses and shoes (Courage and Friendship), Ken’s black shirt (D-3), Wormmon’s green maracas and blue band (Jogress with Daisuke and V-mon), Miyako’s red shoes and green guitar (Love and Purity), Iori’s purple guitar and grey shoes (Knowledge and Faith), Armadimon’s orange tambourine and green band (Jogress with Takeru and Patamon), Takeru’s yellow shoes (Hope), Hikari’s pink keytar and shoes (D-3 and shoes), and Tailmon’s red keytar (Jogress with Miyako and Hawkmon). That’s basically about all you can cram in there at once. Whew!
(As an aside, some of Miyako’s merch tends to toe dangerously close to purple at times, including in this very collab, but it’s probably intended to be pushing the boundary of what can be considered “red” as far as possible; her smartphone case has some noticeably purple tones, probably to prevent it from overlapping too much with Sora’s red.)
It is still probably a bit weird that this color scheme is obviously retroactive, since it wasn’t ever in 02 itself or anywhere near its airing, but it’s nice to finally have something consistent to work with for once after all these years. Will future things continue to maintain this? Hopefully. Probably.
As for ordering, unfortunately, this is still fluctuating, because even the same sets of merch can’t seem to decide whether Ken is second or last. It does seem like most merch so far has been favoring the Daisuke-Ken-Miyako-Iori-Takeru-Hikari ordering, putting Ken next to Daisuke for obvious reasons, which the movie website also supports -- and the added benefit of this ordering is that if you put them in two rows or columns of three (which is done quite often), the Jogress pairs will still be next to each other. So for the most part, I’d say it’s safe to say things have mostly settled on that one.
Frontier
Frontier is explicitly based off Super Sentai, so that means a lot of its visual compositions with the cast are focused on Takuya in the center. However, unlike Sentai, Frontier doesn’t really have ordered roll calls. And while the OP gives you a Takuya-Izumi-Junpei-Tomoki-Kouji order, putting Kouji last feels a bit off considering we pretty much all know he ends up being Takuya’s lancer character for the series (and unlike Ken, we know this very early in the series). Besides, if you watch Sentai, that’s pretty much just how it goes. The first ED offers multiple different orders, so it’s confusing. (And on one hand, it’s possible to make an argument that it’s refreshing that the orders seem malleable, but on the other hand, this is jarring since ordering is a staple of Sentai.)
Also unlike Sentai, there hasn’t been a lot of consistency with the colors, which is especially strange considering that producer Seki explicitly mentioned that Izumi should be associated with pink due to Sentai’s precedent. In fact, a lot of older materials do seem to want to associate Izumi with pink specifically:
But as you can see, there's already some contradictions in regards to color associations, because we can't tell if Takuya's supposed to be orange or red (Sentai associations would suggest red), whether Junpei should be blue or yellow, or whether Tomoki should be light blue or green...and to make things even more complicated, the D-Scanners all have two colors each (and that’s in base colors, because Takuya and Kouji get new ones later).
And, unfortunately, you shouldn’t expect the elemental symbols to help you either, because not only does Kouji being associated with pure white pose similar problems to Ken having black or dark grey, the combo of red/white/light blue/pink/dark blue/purple also isn't really very balanced in terms of design (no yellows...).
While Frontier didn’t get a consistent stream of merch to be contradictory per se, it turns out that by the time we get to the 20th anniversary stuff, we still don’t have a consistent answer!
(ノ°Д°)ノ︵ ┻━┻
Well, okay, it’s not that bad. The same penlights that doubled down on the new coloring for the 02 kids also offered some official image colors for the Frontier kids as well: “orange-red" for Takuya, "blue" for Kouji, "light green" for Tomoki, "purple" for Izumi, "orange-yellow" for Junpei, and "light grey" for Kouichi. Keeping in mind that the colors have such specific names mainly to not give them too much overlap with the 02 kids’, it’s probably better to consider it as red for Takuya, blue for Kouji, lavender for Izumi, yellow for Junpei, green for Tomoki, and purple-tinted grey for Kouichi. In addition, there’s a consistent aspect about this: they correspond to the grip colors on the D-Scanners (the original ones in the case of Takuya and Kouji), so we have a baseline too!
Kouichi does seem to consistently show an angle of wanting to use proper grey but not really wanting to ruin design composition, so some obvious purple tints are put on it to make it blend nicer with the other colors. This is probably something that’s only possible because unlike with Ken, Kouichi ends up actively embracing his association with darkness, which has a purple elemental symbol and has been associated with “darkness” to some degree in the past (the current card game uses it for darkness-aligned cards even besides Kouichi). On the flip side, the bonus about acknowledging Izumi as having at least some kind of purple tinting to it means much better consistency with Izumi/Fairymon/Shutumon’s coloring.
As for the ordering...well, still, good luck. However, I personally feel that merch lines have been more likely to depict the Takuya-Kouji-Izumi-Junpei-Tomoki-Kouichi order, and if you have to ask me, I personally prefer this ordering as well because it makes a nice alternation between the Hyper Spirit Evolutions (fire/wind/ice and light/thunder/darkness).
Bonus
It seems like it’s always the group ensemble things that want to drive us nuts, because other than having this problem again, that’s what Appmon also has in common with 02 and Frontier. The good thing is that there does seem to be some kind of baseline -- usually Haru-Eri-Astra-Rei-Yuujin seems to be somewhat of a followed order, and Yuujin isn’t really put aggressively in the second position like Ken is because his looming presence in the series isn’t nearly as conspicuous. In addition, the Appli Drive covers also seem to be consistent between the original model and the Duo -- red for Haru, blue for Eri, yellow for Astra, and black/grey for Rei, and this seems to be consistent with their Buddy coloring as well. So one could probably extrapolate and decide that purple for Yuujin would work based on his Duo color and Offmon...but then the second OP decides to mess with you at the last minute.
Of course, the reason why is obvious, and it’s possible it really is just for that OP -- again, grey/black tends to be a hard color to work with, and Yuujin really doesn’t seem to fit the image of purple himself (that’s more Offmon). Sadly, Appmon never lasted long enough to get merch runs to really lock down on any of this, so it’s more “vague” than “contradictory”. But it is at least interesting that Haru is consistently associated with red, despite his temperament completely lacking the tropes associated with the color and the consistent underlying question of whether he’s suitable to be a “protagonist” or not.
But hopefully, this won’t continue to be an issue in the fu--

Writer’s Month - 2
Wow, not me writing something for two days in a row? This one is a stand-alone oneshot for now, but I think there is a lot of potential for a sequel, I even have some part of it clearly planned out so if time allows me to sit down with my laptop sooner than later, I’ll work on that!
Fandom/Pairing: Digimon/Mimato (friendship, yes I am capable of writing something other than romance between these two hahahaaa)
Prompt: Coffee shop setting, cold (Yamato is very cold here, it’s actually kinda angsty)
Setting: Post Tri but pre Kizuna. Yamato is in his first year of college and Mimi is in her last year of high school. The basis for this fic is solely the dialogue in To Sora, I wanted to explore the idea of Mimi and Yamato growing closer and having important conversations with each other, but it had to have a rocky start and this is that rocky start!

“I’ll have a venti matcha berry frappe, nonfat, refrigerated chilled milk, absolutely no ice, extra whipped cream, which, make sure, is layered perfectly, with three pumps of caramel syrup and two of vanilla.”
He could feel his manager’s eyes boring into his back, so Yamato did what any other good employee in his place would, he kept a straight face and diligently noted down the customer’s request before moving on to ringing it up without once bothering to look at the girl standing behind the counter or ask for her name. He wondered if his manager would find it strange, that he hadn’t taken the customer’s name, but seeing as Yamato was already putting all his effort into concentrating well on his job and not explode on the brunette who seemed to take some pleasure out of his misery, he decided that he was allowed this one slip and he’d deal with his manager later, since the bigger problem was in front of him, eyeing him with a teasing glint in her caramel eyes as he picked up the paper cup and moved over to the work station to begin working on her order. He did however, kept a track of what his manager was doing from the corner of his eye, and the minute the older man was out of sight, Yamato breathed a sigh of relief and spun on his feet.
“Please Mimi, by all means, go ahead and make my job more difficult.” Yamato seethed, managing to keep his voice low so as to not attract any attention to them.
“Well, if you’re going to ask that nicely.” Mimi smirked, as always she had the upper hand in the conversation due to the safety guaranteed by being a customer at the shop.
“Just take the drink and go, let me work in peace.” Yamato attempted to maintain a superior tone as he begged her to leave, turning again to add the finishing touches to her order as quickly as he could, before his superior caught whiff of his not so welcoming attitude towards their customers.
“Now where’s the fun in that?” Mimi beamed at him, as she accepted the finished product from his hand, her fingers brushed against his for a brief moment, suddenly making Yamato hyper aware of the spot at the back of his hand.
“Don’t you have anything better to do? Entrance exams to worry about?” He asked exasperatedly, she seemed too carefree for someone who was in the last year of their high school, remembering his own experience of it from the previous year.
Mimi scoffed in reply, waving a hand in the air to brush aside his concern for her education, instead of turning to make her way out of the store now that she had received her order, she settled on the empty bar stool on the other side of the pick-up counter, resting one elbow on the counter top as she took careful sips of her drink from the other hand. He watched her like a hawk, Yamato wouldn’t put it past the brunette to make fake claims about the taste of the drink just to get him into trouble.
This had been going on for a few months now, every time he had a shift during her after school hours, Mimi would make it her life’s purpose to show up and annoy him to no extent. He’d attempted to explain to her, that he really needed to keep this job to maintain his life expenses, but apparently the pleasure she took from watching him stumble around while making coffee seemed to take precedent over his livelihood.
Of course, Mimi wasn’t the only one to blame here, if only his roommate at the college dorm wasn’t a bigger pain in the ass, Yamato would never had have to take up this part-time job in the first place. When he had complained to his father about not being able to get along well with his roomie, instead of agreeing to raise his monthly allowance so that Yamato could move out and rent a place of his own, his father had promptly told him that as an adult, he should learn to solve his own problems from now on. Yamato had half a mind to remind his father that him and his friends had not only solved the Digital World’s problems on multiple occasions, but also saved their own world by doing so, but he had stayed quiet and accepted his fate. On Takeru’s recommendation he had taken up a part-time job at this popular coffee joint, the pay was decent and the hours weren’t too bad and well Yamato always had had a knack for being good in the kitchen, so it had been suiting his purposes of saving up to move out of the college dorm as soon as possible just well.
Until Mimi happened to walk in one day and decided to take matters into her own hands.
She had been surprised to see him behind the counter, and at first she had just been curious, about what he was doing here or what he had been up to since the graduation ceremony. Yamato had to admit, that ever since he had graduated high school, he’d finally understood what Jou had been struggling with for the longest time, it wasn’t easy to maintain friendships when one was thrust with the responsibility of taking care of every single aspect of their lives and somehow pursue studies on which one’s future life depended at the same time. He considered himself lucky, if he was able to have a phone conversation with Takeru that lasted more than 5 minutes in a day. So he hadn’t been wary of Mimi popping up every now and them, updating him about her and Koushiro’s school life, and sometimes Jou’s and Sora’s too. It gave him a way to stay connected with everyone without having to make time for them, and while he did feel guilty about this on multiple occasions, he was grateful for it too.
That was before Mimi got bored with just talking about their lives, and decided to spice up their encounters by getting him to light trouble with his manager. It was usually just silly little things like claiming he got her order wrong or giving extremely complicated and hard to follow requests, and she had never pulled something huge that would seriously get Yamato in trouble, but it was still frustrating and it ruined his mojo for the rest of his shift.
There was also the question of why Mimi had suddenly taken such a liking to spending time with him, of all people, since they had never been close enough for a relationship like this. They’d spent time together before sure, and they’d had their fair share of agreements and disagreements when it came to matters related to the Digital World, but apart from that Yamato could barely remember any interactions with her that didn’t circle back to the Digital World or their Digimon Partners. So the thought always nagged at him, at the back of his head, when she would appear with a skip in her step and fix him with one of the brightest smiles he knew.
But then she would go on to do something diabolical, and he’d be reminded of how similar she was to his little brother, which led to him missing Takeru and left him irritated and wishing for her to leave.
Pulling himself out of his thoughts, Yamato turned his attention towards the brunette sitting in front of him, she had set down the drink on the counter top and was currently surveying the store with her bright eyes, the mischievous glint in them indicating that she was just looking for something that could serve as prop of the day in interfering with his work. Relieved that he had caught her while she was still in her planning phase, Yamato decided to take control of the situation before his manager returned and reprimanded him for being rude to their customers.
“You really don’t have anything better to do?” Yamato began icily, making Mimi turn her gaze towards him, the challenging look on her face seemed to put the last nail to his patience’s coffin as he snapped at her, “Don’t you have any friends?”
He regretted it the minute those words left his mouth, biting his tongue in an attempt to stop himself from groaning outwardly.
The effect on Mimi was immediate, all colour drained from her face and her eyes shone with a blanket of tears just waiting to fall, but with a single blink she managed to keep them at bay and faced him with a hardened look as she replied quietly, “I thought that’s what we were.”
And before Yamato could make any attempts to take back his statements or even begin to apologize for his behaviour, Mimi was out of the door, leaving behind her drink on the counter and without sparing a single glance in his direction.
Yamato allowed himself to groan out loud when he picked up her cup to clear the counter and found that it was still heavy, she had barely begun to drink it. He couldn’t help but chide himself internally, for missing on something that was so obvious, for even deliberating on an answer that was right in front of his eyes this entire time.
Yamato couldn’t believe that he, of all people, had missed out on the signs of their budding friendship, had pushed it aside as nothing but an occasional nuisance within his routine.
His optimistic side hoped that he would just explain himself to her when she’d show up tomorrow, even offer her her favourite drink for free as a token of his apology, but a tiny voice at the back of his head reminded him, that there was no way Mimi would come back to spend time with him after this.
Unfortunately, it was the tiny voice that prevailed in its prediction, as Mimi didn’t show the next day or the one after that, or after that.
At first Yamato consoled himself by devoting himself to the tasks at hand, happy to finally be able concentrate on his work, he managed to win praises from his manager on multiple occasions which pushed Mimi’s absence from his surroundings out of his head, and for a while it worked.
But then there were slow days, when he didn’t have much to do but stand behind the counter and look at all the people sitting around in groups of twos and threes, laughing and chatting loudly as they sipped their coffees and munched on their food. The sight would tug on an invisible string in his heart, make him long for Mimi’s teasing smile as she rattled off with an order comprising of the most incompatible ingredients, laughing loudly at the look of horror that would take over his face as he wrote down her instructions. There were days when the shop would be eerily silent, and he’d hear her voice in his head, telling him about something that had happened at school. There were days when someone would walk by with a pet, cuddling it and showering it with affection, making him miss Gabumon’s soft fur and he’d instinctively turn towards the pick-up counter, hoping to tell Mimi about it but was met with emptiness instead.
He hadn’t realised, just how much he had managed to share with her during their encounters, and how he had begun to depend on her company to get him through his mundane work life. And in true Yamato fashion, he had gone ahead and messed it all up by thinking about things from only his perspective.
His father’s words echoed in his mind once again, he had to learn to solve his own problems, and what better time to start than now?

First time read through light novel vol. 18. Random thoughts.
I somewhat suspect the author was hungry while writing this volume.
Also, wow, I knew Kizuna was short but the prior artworks never gave me the full idea of how short. She
is only chest-high compared to Naofumi and Glass (I suppose that could make Glass happy, though; ease of access for Kizuna and whatnot).
Given that, outside of the natural gluttons like Filo, S’yne, and the killer whale sisters, the only person on Naofumi's side with the "Eat food for EXP" matter is Itsuki, I think this is him falling dangerously close to thinking only in terms of game mechanics instead of reality, much like the other three heroes had been early on. Theoretically, yes, if you can gain levels and strength just by eating, why wouldn't you do a lot of it? But he's almost outright ignoring the physical discomfort and pain it's causing his allies and seeing only the numbers. Not to mention that he himself doesn't appear to be eating nearly as much, as he's focus on the cooking.
That said, it is cute that this is the first time in her life Filo is starting to feel full.
Chapter One: Sloth
OH SHI-! Oh, wait. Wrong franchise. We're good. I did not want to have to imagine Kizuna biting her fingers off (Kizuna: "My brain trembles!!!).
If Kizuna is indeed suffering under the curse of Sloth, I'm curious what triggered that specific sin for her. We only have the four heroes of Raphtalia's world to go off of but each sin applied to that specific hero for a reason. Naofumi: Wrath because of his hatred of what Witch and Trash put him through. Ren: Greed because he wanted more EXP, levels, and loot; a toxic extreme of his solo-adventuring. Itsuki: Pride because he believed only in his view of justice. And Motoyasu: lust and envy because of his obsession with Filo and being kept away from her. Kizuna's obsession with fishing, even when there's other important matters that need to be dealt with, I suppose could be considered lazy and thus lead to sloth as its extreme, but it feels a little bit like a stretch.
As he did so, the books from a nearby shelf whirled up into the air, forming . . . a dinosaur . . . perhaps. No, a dragon. The monster’s name was “Magical Tome Dragon.” Now things were really getting a bit crazy. A dragon created from books! Was this some kind of joke?
I want a Yu-Gi-Oh card of that.
“Don’t tell me, Glass is like the Raphtalia of this world? Could we really get that lucky?”
I mean, that's what the fandom likes to joke when it comes to her and Kizuna.
Breaking the sloth curse through Kizuna's love of fishing was about what I expected. Not complaining, of course. Again though, I'm just wonder what about her coincides with Sloth. She prefers talking it out and making allies as opposed to fighting but I wouldn't exactly call that lazy or slothful either.
Kizuna had a lot of folks like this among her allies—people who had started out as enemies but then became allies. If I fought someone as an enemy, there was generally no coming back—there were exceptions, like Sadeena and Shildina, so it was probably better not to generalize.
Glass and L'Arc are literally standing right next to Naofumi as he thinks this and Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki all tried to murder him at one point or another. S'yne was part of the gladiator fights too, now that I think about it, and while they never fought he and Trash were definitely enemies for a while. This dude turns more enemies into friends than freakin' Naruto. Being kind of oblivious is part of Naofumi's character but I suppose this could be seen as an interesting look as to how exactly he considers someone an enemy. If they fought him for reasons he eventually came to understand and sympathize with, then he perhaps doesn't consider them as ever having been a "true" enemy.
Aww, Glass is jealous of Tsugumi being close to Kizuna. And unlike Raphtalia with Naofumi, Kizuna doesn't have any kind of tragedy that keeps her opposed to relationship and would require Glass to be patient. I suppose Glass could simply be afraid of hurting their friendship by proposing romance or even that Kizuna doesn't swing that way. And this is from Naofumi's perspective, so Glass being gay could be completely off the mark. Still, it'd be nice to get a solid landing one way or another. Even Eclair unknowingly rejecting Ren at least give solid confirmation that he's into her and why they're not together.
“What! I’m the Hunting Hero! I don’t handle the cooking part!” Kizuna complained.
“And I’m the Shield Hero!” I retorted. Not the Stewpot Hero! If anyone called me that, I would kill them with cookery!
And technically, you're not even that right now. Not with that mirror on your arm. The mirror is cool and all but I am looking forward to Naofumi eventually getting his shield back. He just feels incomplete without it.
“Almost feeding time!” one of them said. Others proceeded to chime in.
“Yes . . . the time we’ve all been waiting for.”
“The moment we live for, basically!”
“Even if I only get to eat one mouthful . . . that is the fuel that will keep me alive!”
“I’ll never eat anything but his cooking ever again!”
“I think the schweiz is the best! It has to be!”
“No! The stietz!”
“Hey! No fighting! We’ve been warned about fighting!”
Did they stumble across a food cult?
“It isn’t bad,” Filo said. “It just isn’t as nice as yours, Master.”
“Well, okay . . .” I replied.
“All of the heroes have cooked in the village, Mr. Naofumi, but Filo and everyone else all feel the same way,” Raphtalia told me.
Filo also grew up with Naofumi's cooking since birth, so while he's already a good cook you get the added taste of home for her. I've said it before but out of everyone I consider Filo to be the most like Naofumi's daughter.
“Then you wish to settle the bill,” she replied. I thought it was free. As my suspicions intensified, the girl spread both of her hands and continued. “How was the food at Seya’s restaurant? It was so delicious, wasn’t it? If you wish to become a member, please leave all of your assets or hand over anything that can be turned into money. If you leave some personal items as collateral, you can have some time to go and fetch some offerings.”
Yep, that's a cult alright.
“Master’s food!” Filo said.
“They’ll get a surprise when they taste what you’re cooking, kiddo,” L’Arc said.
“Indeed. Your victory is assured, if that’s the best they can do,” Glass agreed. I was still concerned about how aggressive they were being. Were they hopped up on endorphins or something? They weren’t acting in character at all.
My first thought was that the OOC behavior was some side effect Naofumi didn't realize came with the Mirror weapon's power-up method, but then why wouldn't Raphtalia or Kizuna be effected when they have been eating the food too? Then I thought maybe they were more used to eating Naofumi's food in general and would have a tolerance to any addictive effects, but then why is Filo still effected?
“That’s the best dish Seya’s restaurant has to offer! Seya’s curry bag! And it’s Fifth Floor too!” one of the MCs shouted. I barely stopped myself from tipping over onto the ground. He really was just reheating a premade curry in a bag! So he was allowed to heat and serve already finished dishes? I mean, that might give me some ideas myself . . .
“The flavors that are normally lost in reheating have been sealed in the bag using proprietary technology! Now you get the maximized flavor from the moment you open the bag! This truly is the ultimate culinary technique! Everyone, watch this kitchen miracle closely as it unfolds before your astounded eyes!” The MCs continued their diatribe, but it just made it harder for me to keep a straight face. It was all a matter of perspective. Capturing the flavor in a bag was certainly a worse approach than making it on the spot.
“Naofumi . . . am I imagining things? It looks to me like he’s just adding or warming up instant ingredients using hot water,” Kizuna said.
So, like most other antagonists in this series lately, Seya is just an arrogant, entitled fraud high on his own stolen power. Why am I not surprised? Though he is giving me a bit of a Kazuma from Konosuba vibe with how he managed to figure out how to recreate items the old heroes would have talked about from Japan. It's odd to say he doesn't have nearly the same level of charisma as Kazuma give...well...it's Kazuma and he's deliberately written to be a massive scumbag.
I do like with his magic powers and awesome cape, Naofumi is basically the little muddy boy meeting a superhero, one who will save the day through cooking.
As for Kizuna . . . I handed her some of the fish we had brought in and had her cut it up. She’d finished with the poisonous fish already. Her life as a fishing fool was paying off now. She knew her way around a fish. The blood had been skillfully drained, and overall, she was a step ahead when it came to gutting and cleaning.
...You think the Hunting Tool can turn into something like the Wunder Boner
?
I explained pointedly, looking at Seya, Trash III, and the other MC. Trash III responded by flipping me off. I could taunt with the best of them, and I mouthed some swear words back.
I mean, one of my favorite scenes in Isekai Quartet was Naofumi and Shalltear sassing each other, so I can agree with that.
“Pollution?” Kizuna asked, looking puzzled.
“You didn’t notice that?” I replied. “Well, just watch.” She wasn’t the brightest bulb, that was for sure.
“Hmmm, I think I need to go wash up,” the rotund noble said. “I’ll be right back.” The judges proceeded to take turns visiting the washroom. Once they had all returned, it was time to eat Seya’s food.
“Huh?” Kizuna, L’Arc, and Therese were looking puzzled. The other diners around us too. I guess there was cause for a little suspicion.
...Did Naofumi give them laxatives?
“Ah!” Kizuna finally cottoned on. “So that’s why you used so many medicinal herbs in your dishes!”
“Exactly. The reason they all wanted to go to the washroom after eating was to expel the toxins. I also used other herbs to bolster the lethargic feeling that would bring on,” I explained.
He gave the judges f**king laxatives! That's hilarious! I get the actual explanation he gives is more complicated than that, relating to purifying and digestion and getting them to finally take notice of the toxins in Seya's food now that they're free from its hold, but it's funny to think that's basically what he did. He won a cooking competition through dishes that encouraged the judges to take a sh*t (or a p*ss, I suppose).
“Hey . . . you’ve been reading too many cooking manga. It’s an illusion that delicious and good things will be evaluated highly. What you need is popularity and demand,” I said. Of course, it had to taste good, but putting the emphasis on that as a bare requirement was also a problem. If you were planning on selling food in a restaurant, of course it had to taste good. Customers came because of other elements, because of popularity. If Seya’s restaurant collapsed here, it would cause trouble for all the judges. That was why I’d created an escape for them. In order to realize the future that boy wanted.
While we don't see Naofumi selling his wares so much anymore because he has far less of a need to, it is nice we do still get that cynical and merchant side of him. All that time didn't just go to waste and it's still a key part of his character.
“What, then? What do you want?” Seya asked.
“There’s someone behind all of this, correct? Someone pulling the strings. If you tell us all about that, we’ll let you go. Hey, I have an idea. Write it down on this piece of paper here. I want a record of this.” I said and passed a piece of paper to him. Seya’s expression immediately brightened.
“That’s all you want? Fine, I can—” But the rest of that sentence vanished into an awful grunt. The moment Seya tried to write a single word, his head simply crumpled in on itself. He managed a brief scream, and then his entire melon exploded. I didn’t want to traumatize my allies, so I quickly threw up a cage and blocked out the grisly scene. Then I gave a sigh.
Well...that was kind of f**ked up for Naofumi to do. Don't get me wrong, after what they had to do to get Takt to be willing to confess, this is much less horrific. But Naofumi did basically just give Seya false hope and then trick him into executing himself. I get why he did it and how dangerous the vanguards are, but it is interesting to think that while ROTSH isn't the darkest of the light novel series I've been reading, Naofumi, save for Ainz Ooal Gown, is definitely the most morally grey of the protagonists compared to Kazuma, Subaru, and Goblin Slayer.
“No matter how delicious the food is, if you eat the same thing every time, you’ll start to get sick of it. Once you get sick of it, you won’t overeat simply because you won’t want to. I’ve been applying that concept to my food,”
That is better than what I was thinking with Naofumi getting too into the game mechanics. And boy do I feel for his friends. It's the same thing that killed me off of soda for a few years. Obviously it's worse to starve than be overstuffed but it's still not a pleasant experience.
We were talking about the primary reason why Kizuna was summoned here in the first place. To put it simply, the idea was to revive the Demon Dragon.
YYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
And they Tanya'd him too; reborn as an infant of the opposite gender. So does that make Kizuna or Naofumi Being X?
“Seriously . . . it brings dragon tears to my dragon eyes to see you, the great Shield Hero who defeated me, now reduced to this.” The Demon Dragon placed her front paws against her head and muttered sadly to herself.
“I hope you aren’t looking for sympathy,” I said harshly.
“Just think about it for a moment. The same bunch who shouted about defeating me and saving the world are now back, having screwed everything up, relying on me—their sworn enemy—to save them! Take a look around. Does this world look like it’s at peace to you? Well?” the dragon said, really coming for me now. What was worse, I didn’t really have a reply. This world was still plagued by humans fighting each other and had been ravaged by the vanguards of the waves. Everything the dragon had said so far had been so on the money that Kizuna and Glass probably didn’t have any response either. “Can you see how this might feel like something from your own past? Having been chased as a criminal, and then having to clean up after those very weaklings who were chasing you after they had been beaten down by the waves and people from another world?” That punch really landed hard. I wanted to call it a low blow, but she was basically providing a stunningly succinct summary of my life in these other worlds.
Seriously though, after Kyo, Takt, and the various other vanguards, it is so refreshing to have a villain who speaks with some dignity and can actually make a decent point or two, rather than "I'm strong so I can do whatever I want! Losers!" In my vol. 16 random thoughts I compared Takt to All For One from My Hero Academia and I still feel the same way. The two are not that much different goal-wise. They wanted the world and had the power to make it theirs, thus their actions. It is an immature goal when you think about it but AFO did not act anywhere near as immature as Takt and it made him feel so much more intimating. He would sometimes mock his enemy but when he did they were deep cuts that he knew would get under the skin of someone he truly hated, like All Might, rather than just throwing out insults and acting like a brat. And the Demon Dragon is the same (the High Priest too, now that I remember him, even if I don't talk about him as much). I liked Glass as an antagonist because she was intimidating, spoke only as much as she needed to, and was very powerful compared to the protagonists at that time, getting Naofumi to fear facing her again and giving her weight to the story and for the audience. Finding out later her motivations gave her some depth and added grey to the situation. The Demon Dragon is not nearly as sympathetic, but he still works for a lot of the reasons she did. There's presence to him, er, her. It's not a brat who needs to be knocked off their high horse but a genuine threat.
And being able to work with the heroes weirdly makes that even better. The Demon Dragon calls a 100 year truce, not because she's on the side of good, but because she wants there to still be a world around for her to take over. She's completely open about her goal, which ironically makes it easier to trust her.
“That should do for now,” the dragon said. “Hmmm, and this is a female body. Excellent. Shield Hero, under the condition that you will ultimately mate with me, I shall provide even greater cooperation.” So that was how long it took for things to take a crazy turn.
Still a little weird that she wants to f**k Naofumi though. And when the anime gets to this part there is almost definitely going to be a fanfic or doujin. Actually, now that I think about it, there are going to be creators getting some mileage out of when the Demon Dragon tried to take Naofumi over earlier in the series.
“Can’t you make do with Kizuna? She’s one of the four holies from this world. You’ll just have to overcome the gender barrier,” I said.
“Why me?!” Kizuna exclaimed.
“What are you planning on doing to Kizuna?” Now Glass turned a hostile gaze on me too.
Ahh, Naofumi's such a d*ck, I love it. Also, now that's two rivals in one book for Glass. She's almost caught up with Raphtalia.
It would have suited us better if the enemy was a bunch of morons. It was annoying that life never worked out quite so easily. We had no idea how bad it was going to get with the waves, so we had to plan our moves carefully and move to prevent this “fusion of the worlds,” whatever that meant.
Wouldn't that be a heck of a comeback to my bitching about the villains? The ones behind the vanguards have been sending out their idiots first, the ones arrogant and drunk off their power, to soften up the heroes first and cause a bunch of damage but that they know will ultimately just get killed. Takt and the others getting offered up as sacrificial lambs basically because those like S'yne's sister don't like them either.
“I’m starting to feel sorry for Naofumi,” Kizuna agreed.
“He probably thinks you two are in the ‘harem,’” I told them.
“I really don’t like that,” Glass responded. “No, I don’t. I don’t like that at all.” I wasn’t sure why she said it three times, but I didn’t like it either. Just for the record.
“Naofumi is a friend and a comrade, but we’re not like that!” Kizuna retorted. I wondered if she really understood the situation. She was the type who needed things to be said directly to her face.
“A shame we don’t have Fohl here. Even L’Arc would have worked,” I said. Just a few guys mixed in might have broken the group up a bit and prevented it from looking like a harem.
“Naofumi . . . even if we did have some guys, it would probably just give them some different ideas. Like . . . boys love?” Kizuna said. It sounded like, whatever the composition of the party, they would presume a lewd relationship with me at the center.
You know, you never hear about this kind of thing with Ren and Itsuki. Motoyasu went out of his way to have a harem and he still doesn't get it thrown at him as much as Naofumi does. Maybe it's one of those "He protest too much" kind of mindsets, where the more Naofumi denies it the more people think it's true.
“You got lucky. If a wave had occurred with the world of our illustrious leader, we were planning on shattering you. That’s the problem with this system; that’s the only way to get the reward for destroying a world,” the sister explained. I’d heard this talk about rewards for destroying worlds before, I vaguely recalled. I had no idea where that reward came from.
So there's a third world mixed up in all this. Obviously there already was the implication of multiple universes with S'yne and such but now there's a big spotlight on somewhere besides Raphtalia and Kizuna's worlds, where the big bad supposedly lives.
“That’s pretty much what I was expecting. Shield Hero, let me tell you something interesting,” the Demon Dragon began. Then she looked at the Artificial Behemoth’s chest again. “That part there houses a corrupted holy weapon from this world, which has artificially turned the monster into one of the four holy heroes and has allowed it all the power-up methods. It’s basically the monster version of a holy hero.”
I'm somewhat suspecting it's the Blunt Force Holy Weapon, given how easily that beast is smashing through barriers.
The soul that Raphtalia had pulled from the vanguard of the waves was not much like the body it had come from. Instead, it was a gloomy, Japanese-looking guy who was probably in his thirties.
...
“The vanguards of the waves are people who have been reborn or transferred over here after being selected by the one who assumes the name of God. They are given all sorts of abilities, such as the power to steal holy weapons or seven star weapons. They come into these worlds and start causing chaos,” I explained.
“Reborn? You mean like having spare bodies, like Kyo?” Raphtalia asked.
“No, something else. Just their souls were led to this world from Japan, and then they were reborn here as someone from this world. With their memories of the past,” I said. For example, they are people who died in unfortunate accidents—people like Ren, Itsuki, and Motoyasu. This “god” would whisper to them that they had died an untimely death and offer to reincarnate them in any world they liked. They were already dead and so had no reason to reject such an offer. If they did, the “god” probably claimed to be taken with their resolve and promised to give them additional cheat powers, basically forcing them to accept. In some cases, maybe they were just forced to be reborn, no matter what they felt. I’d read books like that, loads of them. Now that they knew being summoned to another world was actually a thing, why not getting reborn or transferred over?
So I was right about Takt being some OC f**kboy! They're all OCs! They're people from Japan who died and now are getting to live out their sh*tty power fantasy fanfiction as their equally sh*tty original character! As a source of useful but disposable minions, that's actually kind of brilliant. We saw how bad Motoyasu, Ren, and Itsuki had been at the beginning (with Naofumi himself potentially on that path as well before he was betrayed) and they were chosen by weapons that actually have the world's best interest at heart. Take those same people and have a malevolent entity constantly feeding their egos and pushing them to do terrible things because "it's their right to do so" and "they're the real heroes" and you've got an near endless source of wrenches to throw into the works of those trying to stop you.
Of course, now I just have this image in my head that the World Eater is Aqua from Konosuba. Which would actually be kind of amazing, not gonna lie. A godly being reincarnating otakus from Japan into a new fantasy-based world for a singular purpose and giving them special powers and tools in exchange.
“What if . . . and just hear me out . . . what if this one who assumes the name of a god is somehow responsible for my game knowledge?” Itsuki quietly suggested. That sounded possible to me now. Even if being summoned was the correct process, having some prior knowledge would change your actions once you arrived.
Before, when the Shield Spirit had explained to Naofumi that he was a first pick choice and the other three heroes were their weapons' third picks, I'd theorized as to why and how the final selection ended up. Assuming the weapons were telling the truth about being able to grant any wish once the waves were over, it could be assumed they have some power over reality even in the four's home universe. So I'd theorized the weapons set up a window to snag their picks, with the shield getting Naofumi and the other weapons, by sheer unfortunance, had their picks keep missing the window and thus they became more desperate, thus why their third picks had to die in order to reincarnate because the weapons couldn't leave things to chance anymore.
Now, with the new speculation and info, we can assume the World Eater has some influence over other universes too, including the heroes' original ones. So two new theories come to mind.
The first, and one I find most likely, is that the World Eater is causing video games that are similar to the worlds impacted by the waves to appear in the original worlds of the heroes. In theory, the butterfly effect could cause a chain of events that'd lead to such games existing, so it's not like the World Eater is just dropping them into each reality. It would just need to nudge things in the right direction. If video game knowledge is actually detrimental to the heroes, then that leaves less choices for the Holy Weapons (at least in regards to what their ideal candidates would be) and opens up more choices for the World Eater, since it wants arrogant and know-it-alls like that for vanguards.
The second, which could still work with the first, is that the World Eater is aware of humans the Holy Weapons have their eyes on and is actively sabotaging them. A weapon has a first choice, so the World Eater throws the game or other things in their path to turn them into a less desirable option, possibly even vanguard material.
After all my comments about the recent antagonists, S'yne's sister is starting to grow on me. She's filling a similar role as Witch; manipulating and using people before ultimately tossing them aside. But like the Demon Dragon and High Priest, there is more of an air of dignity about her than with Witch. With the exception of her sister, she's not really talking down and belittling anyone to try and promote her own strength. Like Glass she feels like someone who is genuinely powerful and doesn't need to prove it. How she's using the enemies of the week is curious and perhaps even a little scary because it does feel like she's testing and experimenting and these losses are not really a loss for her. And there's the added mystery Sadeena threw in over what she really wants. Whether bad guy with a bigger agenda or a secret good guy, she's more enjoyable to read about, as opposed to the vanguards where the biggest enjoyment they offer is watching them get taken down, and even that's not much with all the whining and tantrums they have after they're beaten. She's different from Witch and Kyo. She's not completely high off her own power and doesn't refuse to recognize her enemies' strength. Her casually teleporting away for a bit when she realized the battle was turning in the heroes' favor gave a ton to her character.
I'm just looking forward to when she gets a name other than S'yne's sister or Moron Woman. I appreciate Naofumi's completely lack of caring for learning the names of people who don't deserve it, but if she's going to be a serious antagonist or secret ally, a name would help.

Koushiro typed furiously on his keyboard while facing his computer. He was trying to analyze the fragment of Eosmon that he had retrieved. “How is it going?” Tentomon asked, standing next to him. “Nothing to speak of yet,” Koushiro answered, looking away from the monitor briefly to rest his eyes. With his mind off work, he recalled the words that Menoa had spoken to them earlier that afternoon. His face clouded as he remembered the rings on Taichi and Yamato’s digivices. “Tentomon, have you ever heard of ‘the candle of life’?” “What’s that?” Tentomon asked, tilting his head. “It’s a rakugo performance about the grim reaper. The reaper has a cave where they overlook the candle of life for many people. The protagonist learns from the grim reaper that the length of that candle represents that person’s length of life.” “Huh. The candle represents the person’s length of life…” Tentomon repeated doubtfully. “Yes. When the candle’s light goes out, the owner of that candle dies. The protagonist’s candle was in a precarious situation, so when the protagonist saw that…” Koushiro trailed off. “What did he do?” Tentomon pressed impatiently. “What do you think he did, Tentomon?” “Oh now, don’t be mean! Just tell me!” Koushiro smiled at Tentomon’s reaction. “The story actually has various endings. There’s one where the protagonist uses the candle next to his to extend his own life and it turns out to be his wife’s candle, or he puts a fallen candle back up and it turns out to be his sick younger brother’s, or there’s one where the flame goes out while he’s mulling over what to do.” “Uh-huh… Sounds like getting a happy ending is quite the high hurdle,” Tentomon said, shaking his head. “I can’t help but think of that ring of light as the candle of life.” Would his own digivice bear the same ring of light that was on Taichi and Yamato’s digivices, one day? Just imagining that he would eventually be facing that problem made him feel bleak. Koushiro gazed at Tentomon. “What kind of ending would you like, Tentomon?” “Let me see…” Tentomon paused in thought, then looked up.
“Instead of taking things from people against their will, I’d much rather give what I have to them before my end.” “…Me too.”
Koushiro and Tentomon looked at one another and broke into smiles. Koushiro faced his monitor once more and went back to work. This time, with the belief that it would be the first step in breaking down this current state.
BONUS FROM TENTOMON’S TRI IMAGE SONG:
( ‘ Kioku no Kakera ‘ [Shards of Memory], Tentomon Side ):
Koushiro-han will be okay Koushiro-han will keep working hard Koushiro-han will succeed I’LL KEEP TELLING YOU THAT There’s no such thing as a mistake

February 8, 2021
Welcome to the final part of the Introduction of Nijisanji. Thanks for going through all of them, if you did. It was pain to work with so much and so little. This part would cover everyone who has debuted in the year 2020.
Nijisanji IN 1st Gen
Aadya - The name means beautiful. 21 year old, who likes to play games and sing. Does dancing as a day job, so acts as a gaming nightingale. She has a knack for games in my cursory view, but that might be just the competitiveness.
Vihaan - The name means breaking dawn, kind of. Likes gaming very much, and plays them very loudly and complaining... which to be expected from this crew.
Noor - The name means light. Likes BL, coffee and beer, BL to the point she learned chinese from watching a BL drama. Basically a middle-aged man at heart, including a very nice husky voice. Does talks and games. Sings randomly and looks up to Rion, of all people. Ange mentioned her, Ange likes to mention foreign people.
Nijisanji KR 1st Gen
Min Suha - Knows the culture through their parents and has a nice voice. Sister Claire likes him, and who doesn’t? He’s freaking cool, man!
Shin Yuya - College student in virtual Seoul. Always has a smartphone at hand, does self-searching on a constant basis. Definitely has otaku knowledge, likes singing, drawing and cute things. Doesn’t like horror games, but played a lot on stream.
Plays a lot of different games, including FPS like Apex, and this is where she gets to collaborate with Japanese senpais, which is always fun to see.
Gaon - Originally Moarin’s brother, but Moarin left, so the lore changed. Has a twintail for attention purposes. Only member of Nijisanji KR to work as a job, but quit as the end of 2020. He’s pretty cool. Not nice, but definitely not a mean person either.
Han Chiho - He’s a time-displaced psychic, and so speaks with a high register. High register is usually seen as old, people don’t use it anymore, but it’s usually perfectly understandable... it’s an interesting quirk. Other than that, pretty normal streamer.
2020 Part 1 (Jan-Apr)
Furen E Lustario - During debut, expressed a liking choking oneself... so we know who we are dealing with. Has to add using fingers, as to illustrate her math prowess. But overall a fun person to watch, and has a pretty good variety of streams.
Melissa Kinrenka - Wants to be a songwriter, but still needs help. But she is a great singer, and can write and mix songs. Usually called Meli. Has a deep side, basically.
Ibrahim - Originally an oil prince, but now runs an onsen. Acts like a child at times due to his supposed past, and he is muslim, as the lore and name implies. But overall, fits right in with the child-like male of Nijisanji... kind of.
Nagao Kei - He’s an exorcist, but really does any job. Pretty good at all kinds of fighting. Pretty old in terms of human member at the age 26. Very much like Ibrahim, but much more bishonen, which melts a woman's heart. Oh, he’s good at learning stuff. Like he tries to learn morse code, and completely memorized the KTANE manual. Just to make Fumi, one of his seniors, happy for a while. That’s some big dedication.
Genzuki Tojiro - Works as a secretary for the gods. Has that unmatching haircut. Very good at making songs and does mixing for Nijisanji events.
Kaida Haru - A demon researcher, but too lazy. Quiet and nice voice leading the viewer to see him as a mother figure, but as you guess, he doesn’t like it due to the work. Oh, said a slur on stream but got banned less than Yumeoi, which is quite sus.
Nijisanji ID Gen 3
Azura Cecillia - An alien angel. Has a sword with a really long name, but calls it Chonsuke for short. She’s pretty cute and a little bit ditzy, from what I remember. Got mistaken as a boy, which is such an odd thing, but maybe it’s the deep voice?
Nara Haramaung - A princess of a tribe. Originally released as part of 1st gen, but got delayed here, but the gen mates fit together very well. Sings spontaneously sometimes.
Layla Alstroemeria - Time-traveling history major. Definitely more airheaded of the group and most child-like of the generation. But she’s pretty fun to watch, regardless.
Nijisanji KR Gen 2
So Nagi - Traveling virtual Japan, speaking fluent Japanese with a nice clear voice. Likes Ange Katrina, which she readily repriocates. Seen as the top seed in Nijisanji KR.
Lee Siu - A female kitsune, and yes from the same illustrator as Fubuki. Likes dad jokes and an endurance player and does speak three languages. Roha likes her. Occasionally can hear the apartment announcement, which is always a fun moment.
Chae Ara - She’s an angel, and a great singer. And likes to people-watch. Has a cute voice, and good at hosting. I really liked her in the streams that I watched. There’s something about her personality that speaks to me.
2020 Part 2 (May-August)
Sorahoshi Kirame - Made her name through twitter, and traded fan art with KR members. Has the same illustrator as Kanata. Couldn’t stream due to money purposes for four days, got his PC after a month of hard work. Overall a poor and diligent girl.
Asahina Akane - 1st year high-schooler. Very energetic and follow people well. Likes a Jpop band, and likes to travel as well. Also does a lot of collabs with senpais.
Suo Sango - The youngest member of the theater club, which is the theme of the latest generation. Has a wide range, and likes Sanrio and tomato. Very motherly calm voice.
Like girly anime, you know Pretty Cure and stuff. Likes western pop music as well.
Todo Kohaku - Third-year high schooler. Said she’s a lady, but she’s definitely just a normal girl. Had a good cover of Mela, and overall a decent streamer.
Kitakoji Hisui - Middle-school transfer student. Likes a lot of different things, but Minecraft is what she is most known for... I guess it makes sense.
Nishizono Chigusa - She’s the troublesome one of the theater group. Very frequently makes sexual quips. Also I thought she was a boy when I first saw her. Definitely my favorite of the newest group, and also did a stream with Matsuri as well.
And that actually has a history. You see this is not Chigusa’s first rodeo... as it is apparent, and during her previous life Matsuri and her did a sleepover, and was quite close as well... so this is actually a really nice reunion. I didn’t know that until now.
Nijisanji KR 3rd Gen
Nun Bora - A second-year high schooler, likes drawing and playing the recorder which she has a battle with So Nagi. Quick learner, apparently. Plays APEX and Fall Guys, but is competent in pretty much any game. Definitely top tier APEX player.
Akina Ray - Japanese streamer who streams in virtual Seoul. Does a morning talk show, likes baseball, since she’s from Hiroshima, and Shadowverse. She’s actually an art student and a meat lover. But overall, the most seiso art student of Nijisanji.
Lee Roha - Idol trainee from outer space, a mixed race. A bit of a ditz, with the appropriate thumbnails. Streams in Japanese on YouTube, in Korean on Twitch. Does a lot of League of Legend on twitch, and does evening piano stream. Likes Lee Siu.
Nijisanji ID 4th Gen
Etna Crimson - Half supernatural, likes to make everyone happy. Definitely not Amber from Genshin Impact, because Amber is Kizuna Ai. Okay, bad joke. Yeah, she’s good.
Bonnivier Pranaja - Originally a fisher, but quit after being swindled. Usually appears with KR streams, actually. Maybe likes Hana? Who knows.
Siska Leontyne - Security officer for shady company. Pretty good at games involving killing... make sense considering her profession. Pretty cool and laid-back.
Nijisanji KR 4th Gen
Ryu Hari - Likes to collect nightmares, likes reading and playing the electric guitar.
Shin Kiru - A 25-year old NEET, has an odd way of speaking and strange topics. Likes Rock and horror movies. He seems pretty laid-back as well.
Yang Nari - 19-year old girl from a different world who now lives in the countryside. Pretty good at hosting with her cute voice. Likes sewing, and talks in high status. She has a thing of suffering, and that kind of comes out from lore.
Oh Jiyu - She’s a female vtuber, although she looks and sounds boyish. Third-year college student representative. Speaks Korean and Japanese, and like gacha and also singing... so maybe a boyish Suisei? I’m sure she’s more normal, though.
Nijisanji ID 5th Gen
Nagisa Arcinia - Wannabe fashion designer, speaks a bunch of languages... but that’s normal for ID... yeah, she’s cute and might be a little psychopathic. Typical.
Derem Kado - 16 year old girl going to magical school, always looking for a cat, but a special cat that makes contracts and stuff. High pitched scares and gets lost.
Reza Avanluna - He’s a world chronicler, he visits and chronicles worlds in his dreams. Has a ship going on with Hana, I think? I’m not sure. Please correct this, if untrue.
There you go! All 139 extant members as of February 8th, 2021, which is the third anniversary of Nijisanji... that was a long post... even though it was in three parts. Sorry for filling the days with this... I have been busy with collecting data and so on. But I hope you have a good inkling of the landscape that is Nijisanji.

Connections Review Part 1
Happy 2021 everyone! Well…the year’s off to a terrible start due to how bad last year was but I hope that most of 2021 will be good and not be 2020 Part 2: Electric Boogaloo. But enough of that, another arc ended, another review due. Now I am quite conscious of length here and I’ll try to make these reviews a bit easier to read, it will still be split into 3 parts as there I can cover the main themes which are; Time Travel, Harems and Maverick ‘Motherfucker Hellspawn’ Storm. My initial plan was to have a quick lightening recap of everything that doesn’t fit into these categories and then review the Time Travelling and Harems but Storm became so big he needed his own part. Oh, and it should go without saying, but I will not cover the Mistletoe Asks. They are not relevant to the arc and are basically shipping fluff. No in-depth analysis required there. And with that said and done, let’s get right into it.
Its Recap time
So, as I mentioned before we get into the 3 big themes of this arc, I’ll cover really quick, and I promise it will be really quick here, anything that doesn’t fit into those categories. So firstly, we see that Kazuichi went around the Void Warehouse and helped fix their lights. Now that all of Class 77-B are aware of Void’s existence, they can help out with any problems they might have in their living quarters, which leads to a funny scene of Kazuichi getting attacked by a crow. This could be random but given what has happened with another seemly random event (more on that later) and the fact that Monocrow exists, this could be sinister foreshadowing for things yet to come. We also see Kazuichi getting ideas to build a robot with Chihiro as that’s his way of romance. Given Chihiro’s crossdressing tendencies, I wonder when the truth comes out and how confused our shark boy would be. But yeah, Kazuichi out all of the new Class 77-B members seems to have the most focus in this arc, not that I’m complaining as he was the most ‘pointless’ survivor from DR2 so him getting actual character development and focus I’m more then welcome for! There’s also Yoruko rekindling her relationship with her mentor Minako. This went better than expected then again it happened years ago, both Yoruko and Minako had time to reflect on it and both wanted to make up, but thought the other wouldn’t accept it. We also see some parallels here with Hiroko from UDG as Kizuna is revealed to be the result of a teenage pregnancy. As I mentioned in an ask, not to bog you down with personal details but teenage pregnancy is a serious problem where I live and too many people I know fucked as teens, didn’t use protection, and boom! Babies! Good thing I have a passion for Danganronpa so I DON’T get wrapped up in that kind of stuff eh? So, I completely understand Minako’s rational here, and Kizuna’s more troublesome behaviour as one of my RL friends was also the result of a teen pregnancy, and this led to her having…issues. And yeah, Kizuna shamelessly flirts with the Anons and talks about Josuke, no not THAT Josuke, simping hard for her. Naturally we have bigger problems to content with but once the weather calms down, we need to sort out Kizuna, especially now that Yoruko and Minako have made up. And that’s the two things that happened which weren’t relevant to the main themes. Now they are out of the way, time to move onto Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Stuff. Hey, Emma made a Doctor Who joke already, so it’s okay!
Back to the Visions
Despite Time Travel being one of the main themes of this blog, not a lot of research has gone into it at the moment, so in this wind down time, it’s the perfect time for Umeko to do some experiments into time travel. Last Arc dropped the reveal that Mikako has being getting dreams of the future, and as Koroko and Umeko pull up at the Kisurugi household, we see that Mikako just had a dream of the Tragedy, which understandably horrified her. Because of this Umeko and Koroko were forced to tell Mikako, Yamato and his father the truth about the future. They omitted Kasugano and him changing the timelines as its not needed but well…when one dreams of an apocalyptic future you know is coming, there’s no sense in lying about it. Umeko then explains about the time travel and basically that since the brain surgery, Mikako’s brain has become a tachyon receiver that can pick up tachyon from different timelines, not just the one you are on. But it goes beyond being able to see the future via her dreams as if Mikako focuses, and someone touches Mikako during this time, they are hit with a vision of the future that involves them. The first vision was with Koroko and she caught a glimpse into a future much more distant then the 2017 that Hajime, Yoruko, Sora and the other 2 time travellers came from, as it seems to be from the Year 2020-2022 so pretty close to our time then. Here Koroko and Kanata, who not only went through a growth spurt like Hiyoko (Poor Hibiki, she is forever going to be the short one) and has married Nagito, are giving vaccinations to a young girl named Sayuri Hinata. Sayuri herself is very familiar to some people as during the last Arc when Akane was trying to comfort Nikei, one Anon asked about a timeline where she and Ayame had a child. This was a reference to Nextgenronpa which is a Nextgen AU on Instagram created by Mikwithnoando, if you happen to have an Instagram account, I highly recommend reading it, it’s really good! The character in question is called Sayuri Otonokoji the Ultimate Sculptor and in Nextgenronpa she’s the child of Hibiki and Iroha. Koroko looking through her medical records noticed her mother’s name is Hibiki Hinata so Hibiki obviously changed her last name, makes sense as she wants to probably be as far away from Otonokoji as possible now but no mention of the father and yes Sayuri looks a lot like Iroha. This has a few possibilities.
The first theory is that Sayuri is Hibiki and Hajime’s child, but both are very busy. Hibiki would have very likely restarted her musical career around this time and we don’t know what Hajime would be doing but he would be very busy as well, and thus not a lot of time to raise Sayuri. Now Iroha would have a very sedimentary lifestyle and given she is looking after Jataro at the moment, this would probably make Iroha one of the more experienced caretakers/mothers of the cast, so maybe Sayuri was often babysat by Iroha, and if Sayuri was spending a lot of time with Iroha at a young age, she would start to view Iroha as a second mother and start copying her behaviour and mannerisms. But that doesn’t evade the fact that Sayuri PHYSICALLY looks like Iroha as well. The second theory is something happens to Hibiki or Hajime and they are unable to reproduce but want kids. With Kyoji, making kids would not be an issue, but a surrogate mother would be required and maybe Iroha volunteered to be a surrogate. However, the big issue there is that Iroha is much younger than the Goodbye Despair cast, and as Mikan later points out legally, you need to be 21 to be eligible. Sayuri looking to be 8-10 years old means Hibiki and Hajime must have banged around now-2014 and Iroha won’t turn 21 until 2017 and Sayuri looks way older than 3-5 years old. But there is one more theory and the one I believe in. Just because Mikako can see the future, doesn’t mean it’s the timeline we are currently on, and you guys remember that awful, awful period during Oncoming Storm when Iroha was crushing on Hajime and wanted to join the Cuddle Puddle despite there being a significant age gap between him and Iroha? In our timeline, Yoruko was able to slap some sense into Hajime, he was able to see he was developing a Saviour’s complex and was able to grow and develop, and it also system shocked Iroha as well as she learnt that she needed to grow up as well. But what if that didn’t happen? I think that timeline is from one when the sense slapping didn’t happen and Iroha did wind up being part of the Cuddle Puddle, and Sayuri was the result of science from Kyoji and Iroha and Hibiki wanting kids. In addition to this we also see Kotoko in her teen years and she looks brilliant all grown up and the way she talked about ‘our mothers’ and Sayuri referring to Kotoko as a big sister, makes one believe that Mikan is successful in adopting Kotoko. Overall, while Sayuri is going to be a headache to decode, that future was nice and sweet, even if it gave Mikako mild seizures.
After Mikako recovered, Yamato wanted to see the future as well, and thus we get the second vision which is from the OG Timeline in 2014, as it shows some Class 79 tomfoolery with Haruhiko ‘testing’ Yamato’s jetpack and crashing into a tree, and Teruya being concerned for his bro. I know its 2014 because Class 79 was formed then and they didn’t bond for long before Utsuro showed up with an army of Monokumas and was like ‘Knock knock, it’s the upupupu train’ and we get the Proto Killing Game. At least Yamato gets to see his future friends for the first time. And Mikako doesn’t get that much of a headache this time so it seems that the further in time she looks, the bigger the side effects. The first vision was a decade into the future so the side effects were quite big but the second one was only a couple of years so the effects were reduced. It remains uncertain if Mikako has to trust the person in question for the vision link to be done because as much of a force of good this seer ability is, it can also be used for evil. Overall, lots of discoveries on Mikako’s abilities and some hope that not every future out there is filled with despair and there exists a timeline where the Quantum Crew do win. Now it’s a case of seeing if that’s the timeline they are on or not.
That summarizes part 1 with the recapping of minor details and the time travelling science! It’s a longer part then I wanted but with the recap at the beginning it cannot be helped. When we come back, I’ll talk about the Harems and the events surrounding them and hopefully that would be the new length I wish to aim for because this is more of my old length. Stay tuned people! - Review Anon

Quote
“That was awesome! I guess that’s why they call you the Shield Hero, eh Kiddo?” L’Arc grunted next to me while he fought another ganesha. “Awesome? I’m the Shield Hero. If I couldn’t block an attack like that, what good would I be?” I didn’t feel like I had to explain myself to him, but it was true. Since I came to that new world, my main role in battle was to use my high defense rating to block the attacks of enemies. I guess I was sort of an exception. I should mention that I was currently in yet another world, one that lay on the other side of the dimensional rifts that accompanied the waves of destruction. “Don’t let your guard down! Pay attention, will you, Boy?” “Hey Kiddo, you better stop calling me ‘Boy’!” “If you keep calling me ‘Kiddo,’ I’m going to keep calling you ‘Boy’!” Just then I got an even better idea, based on what I knew about his background. “Maybe I should call you ‘Nobunaga’ instead?” “Hey! How did you know that Kizuna used to call me that ?! ” I guess it fit pretty well. I’d have to remember to compliment Kizuna on her nicknaming skills. [...] “L’Arc, you understand Mr. Naofumi so well!” “I know all sorts of people, so right from the get-go I could tell that he wasn’t a bad guy.” “I’m the worst kind of guy!” “Oh yeah, you think you’re really tough, don’t ya?” “Shut up!” What was WITH this guy? By the way, the guy that was pretending to know all about me was L’Arc. That was short for L’Arc Berg. I still didn’t know his last name. He was an experienced adventurer in his late twenties. Generally, he was a pretty charming guy. He knew how to get people on his side. Sometimes he was a little childish, but that was probably just part of his charm. When we first met he was wearing a set of light armor, but when we met up again, in this new world, he was dressed—I don’t know why—like a member of the Shinsengumi. The style suited him, but I wondered which one was his usual look. After all, Glass wore a kimono, and Kizuna wore a haori over a lolita style dress. He probably chose the clothes based on their effects. Maybe the Shinsengumi clothes he had picked up while sneaking around in this world were actually better than the light armor. Why did I care so much about his clothes anyway? Alright, enough of that. Moving on.
Prologue of Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Light Novel, Volume 9.
“Why” you ask, Naofumi. I will tell you. That’s what’s called attraction and that’s why. You are appreciating the view of Mr. Handsome Nice Guy in Shinsengumi clothes. That’s normal. That’s a pretty beautiful aesthetic. Also I have to stress how much they are made for each other. This first dialogue? Masterpiece. “You call me kiddo, so I will call you boy. Now we are even”. Also it looks like Naofumi isn’t older than L’Arc after all, which was completely stunning to me! I know that every piece of info in the novel is kinda lied down by Naofumi himself as he is the narrator of the story, but claiming as a narrator that L’Arc was in his late twenties vs saying in a dialogue, which was supposed to be a comeback at L’Arc’s “kiddo”, that he is older than him are two different things. Anyway, I didn’t expect L’Arc to be actually older than Naofumi. We don’t really know how many years apart they are, but less than 10 for sure, as late twenties can mean anything from 25/26 to 29.
(He really looks very Nobunagish xD Picture is from Volume 17).

[fanfic] Secrets of Ears: Chapter 4
Daisuke tried to wrap his brain around what Gennai said. He’d been created? It had felt kind of funny when he’d first heard it from Koushiro but to hear all the details like this – it wasn’t all that funny anymore.
His stomach churned a little bit as he stared down at his hands, then looked up at the others.
“So what does all this mean?” He wanted to know. “I mean – I’m not going to start wanting to tear apart reality or something, am I?”
“Unlikely. Gennai shook his head. “As I said, while you weren’t intended to develop a mind or personality of your own, you did. Which means you make your own choices, just like any other human or Digimon. But you will have to be wary of your dark side.”
“Dark side?” Miyako asked, eyes narrowing a trifle. “What’s that?”
“Just what he said,” Yamato answered. “All of us who have Viral blood have a dark side. The part of us that’s pure viral and takes after our Viral parent.” He twisted his lips for a heartbeat. “All of us have Digimon names. Mine is Chiguumon. But my dark side is Anbumon. They’re – not quite different people, not quite us.”
Jou nodded. “My name is Jitsumon. Dark side is Fuseiimon.” He made a face as annoyed as Yamato’s. “He drinks a lot more blood than I do. I do it because I need to. He does it because he likes to.”
“Aikoumon,” Sora quasi-introduced herself. “And my other side is Akuenmon. She’s not really someone you want to meet.”
Ken’s ears were naturally paler than the rest of him. Right now, Daisuke thought that the rest of him wanted to catch up to his ears in paleness. He swallowed.
“So what about us? Or the others?” His eyes flicked between Miyako and Koushiro.
“We don’t have dark sides. I’m Vaccine and Data, Miyako is Vaccine,” Koushiro told him. “As for the two of you, I can’t honestly be sure. You’ll have to encounter those sides to know their names. As for your own names – you’ll learn them. They’re written into your data.”
Daisuke wasn’t that worried about it. Gennai had just said that he could make his own decisions, so he wasn’t going to fret about a so-called dark side. What he worried about was Ken and what Ken was probably thinking. Ken had mostly accepted his past and moved on from it. But to hear that there was a dark side in him just waiting to get out…
Nope. Daisuke wasn’t going to let Ken worry about that. He’d not done all that work to get him to feel good about himself to let it all go to waste now.
So he stood up. “Well, thanks for letting us know. Come on, Ken. I want some ramen. You want ramen?”
Ken was on his feet a moment later. “Yes. I would like ramen.”
“Before you go,” Koushiro spoke quickly. “You need to be aware of this. Your powers are linked to the Digital World. The more time you spend there, the easier they will come to you. But now that you’re aware of them, they could manifest at any point. The key seems to be strong emotion. Watch yourselves.”
Daisuke didn’t waste another moment. He wrapped one hand around Ken’s, and wasn’t even remotely surprised that Ken’s hand shook in his grip.
He squeezed Ken’s fingers and smiled at him. This was weird, yeah. But it wasn’t anything that they couldn’t all get through together, just like they did everything else.
They settled back onto the train, neither of them saying anything about what they’d found out. Ken stared up at the train’s roof, his eyes half-closed, his hand still firmly in Daisuke’s. Daisuke’s fingers itched to bury themselves into Ken’s hair and do everything he could to soothe Ken.
He held back, though. He wasn’t going to bother Ken’s hair or even get close to his ears in public. He’d made a promise.
They stayed quiet all the way until they were in the ramen shop that Daisuke had wanted to go to today. Their partners stayed with them, just as quiet, Wormmon snuggling around Ken’s shoulders, V-mon leaning a little against Daisuke’s side.
It was V-mon who broke the silence. “I always kind of thought you smelled like a Digimon,” he said. “But I thought that it was because of me.”
Daisuke blinked before a laugh broke out of him. “Guess not.” He playfully tapped at V-mon’s nose. “Guess you need to get your nose checked.”
V-mon pouted, playfully whacking back at him. Ken chuckled a bit, but it sounded strained. Still, the ice had been broken.
“I don’t care who your sire was,” Wormmon said, squirming around so he could stare soulfully up into Ken’ eyes. “You’re my Ken-chan no matter what.”
Ken’s cheeks reddened and he stared down into his ramen bowl. “I don’t want to be like that again,” he murmured, hands clenching together. He swallowed for a second. “Do we know – do we know anymore if it was the Spore or if it was – me?”
“Does it matter?” Daisuke asked, shrugging. “You’re not like that now and you’re not going to be ever again. You know better. You’re not going to hurt anyone innocent ever again.”
He wasn’t surprised that Ken was worked up over it. He’d probably stayed worked up over it for a while. Even with Daisuke and Wormmon and all of the others telling him over and over that he’d grown and didn’t need to be worried about it. Ken worried. It was what he did.
“Hey!” A vaguely familiar voice declared and someone dropped himself down on Ken’s other side. Daisuke glanced over to see Tachibana Noriaki sitting there, flashing that brilliant white-toothed smile. Daisuke wondered if he should ask which toothpaste company sponsored him. “Didn’t think I’d see you guys here.”
Ken tensed at once, shifting to be closer to Daisuke. “Why not?”
“I thought you were gong on a date,” Tachibana teased. “You are dating, aren’t you?”
“Yeah.” Daisuke wasn’t going to deny that they were an item. “And we are on a date.”
Tachibana tilted his head. “You’re going out for ramen as a date? I took my girlfriend to the gardens. Saw some really awesome flowers there.” His eyes glowed warmly. “You should do something like that. Or to a concert.” He stopped, eyes suddenly focused on Ken’s ears. “Or would that be too much for those poor sensitive ears of yours?”
One hand flashed out and dug into Ken’s hair, squeezing his ears. He didn’t let go, even as Ken squealed and started to bat at him.
“Aw, it’s not that bad! You’re not a little kid anymore, are you? You should be used to people playing with your ears, especially if you’ve got a boyfriend!” Tachibana grinned, light glinting off of his teeth.
Daisuke was on his feet already. He didn’t normally get too angry; he’d never really felt the need. It had to be something horrible to really trip his temper. Seeing this jerk fondle Ken’s ears like that, when Ken so very clearly wanted to be anywhere but here, did it.
“Let him go!” Daisuke snapped, and he wondered oddly why his voice sounded different, deeper, darker. Not for a moment did he think about what he’d been told earlier.
At least, not until a gleam of something caught his eye and he saw a long, sharp sword resting in Ken’s hand. Ken’s grip tightened and when he turned towards Daisuke, Daisuke could see red flames dancing in the back of them.
They’d been told the process would take time. It seemed that time wasn’t very long at all.
Part of him – a part that he’d never been aware of before – stirred. Those rage-spawned flames were so pretty. Not that anything about Ak – Ken – was ever not pretty, but there was something special about them regardless. He wanted to curl up in those flames and bask there forever.
Instead, he rested one hand on top of Ken’s, where the sword waited. He shook his head. “No.”
Tachibana either hadn’t ‘heard or wasn’t paying attention. He rubbed harder. “Hey, can you hear really well with these things? They look so weird, you should get some kind of benefit from them, right?”
As fast as Daisuke was, Ken had always been faster. He leaped to his feet, knocking Tachibana away with one hand, and brought his sword around to point at the other’s throat.
“Touch me again,” he growled, voice sounding far too much like the Kaiser, “and I won’t hesitate.” The tip of his sword rested on Tachibana’s throat. “And I won’t care.”
Daisuke strolled to stand beside Ken. “And I’ll give him an alibi. Anything he does, you pushed him to it. We told you to stop. You’re not listening. Either leave us alone or pay the price.”
Tachibana looked, to tell the truth, as if he were about to wet himself on the spot. Daisuke wouldn’t have been surprised. In point of fact, he thought it would have been hilarious.
Wormmon hadn’t moved from around Ken’s shoulders. He rested one pod on Ken carefully. “You don’t want to hurt him, Ken-chan,” he murmured. “He’s not worth it.”
“No, he’s not.” Ken replied. “But if he doesn’t leave me alone, I will.”
Tachibana turned paler even than Ken’s ears. He stumbled back, eyes flicking all over. “You’re insane!” He spat the words out before ducking away and fleeing for the door as fast as he could.
They were the only ones there at the time – they’d stayed long enough at Koushiro's that most of the usual crowd had gone home. The ramen chef had stepped into the back. The timing really couldn’t have been better.
Daisuke closed his hand once more on Ken’s. “He’s gone,” he murmured. “You can relax now. It’s all right.”
Ken stared at him,, the bright ruby flames still burning. Then he swallowed, staring down at the sword as if he’d never seen it before in his life. Daisuke guessed that he really hadn’t.
“What did I do?” Ken whispered brokenly. “What did I do, Daisuke?”
To Be Continued
Notes: One chapter left to go! Sunday wraps it all up. I rather enjoyed writing the confrontation between Ken and Tachibana. Tachibana will probably run screaming if he so much as spies Ken across the street now. He’s lucky Akogimon didn’t fully awaken. Akogimon would have skewered him and laughed about. Think Kaiser, but worse. Much, much worse.

Jyoumi Challenge Day #12: Teamwork, Conflict & Resolution
Once again I loved both prompts so much that I could not resist combining them! The beginning of Last Evolution Kizuna inspired this prompt, and I got help from a wonderful friend to really hone in on what the conflict would be about. Don’t worry, though, no Last Evolution Kizuna spoilers, here! I hope y’all enjoy!
---
“Oh, Joe! It isn’t that bad!” Mimi shouted as she ran on ahead, Palmon a few feet in front of her.
“It is!” he shouted back, Gomamon riding on his head.
“So my underwear ended up in the laundry, too! It isn’t that big of a deal!”
She stopped on a dime and turned to face him, narrowing her eyes at him.
“I appreciate the two of you working out your problems, but the Digital Gate is opening soon and you still need to get Scorpiomon over there!” Izzy shouted over their tiny bluetooth headsets, causing Joe to flush.
“Mimi, we need to hurry up!” Joe shouted, now taking off again, running past her.
“You were the one who’s been getting mad about your stupid shirts!”
Mimi followed after him, still grumbling quietly in between breaths.
“You didn’t have to shout about your underwear while we’re out running to fight a Digimon AND Izzy is on the line!”
Mimi let out an annoyed groan, “Oh it’s just panties! Izzy’s heard the word and so has everyone else! It’s not a big deal!”
The sound of a loud crash rang out, as Scorpiomon burst through a pile of cars, tossing them all over.
“Guys!”
The sigh that fell from Joe’s lips was filled with frustration, Joe hopping off his head. Palmon stopped, turning to her partner.
“We need to Digivolve!” Palmon told them. The couple looked towards each other, frustration still lingering in their gazes, but they each nodded, pulling out their Digivices.
The Digivices started to glow, and so too did Gomamon and Palmon.
“Gomamon Digivolve to…!”
“Palmon Digivolve to…!”
Spheres of light shattered from the two, revealing their Champion forms.
“Ikkakumon!”
“Togemon!”
“You have five minutes to get Scorpiomon to the beach! I’m marking the location on your phones now!”
“Got it, thanks Izzy, we got this,” Joe said, checking his phone to see the location marked close to where they were now.
“You’re still making way too big of a deal about it,” Mimi sniped at him as she stepped closer to the battle, watching Togemon close in with a punch against Scorpiomon.
“I only have two shirts to wear for work that aren’t pink now!” he told her, coming up close to her as Ikkakumon charged from the side, knocking into Scorpiomon to knock it off balance.
“You need more color in your wardrobe,” she grumbled under her breath, Joe once again letting out a frustrated sigh.
“I would’ve preferred if it were my choice.”
Mimi rolled her eyes, before letting out a loud cheer as Togemon threw an uppercut that temporarily flipped the scorpion over.
“Mimi, I’m being serious.”
“You’re being seriously annoying right now,” she told him, once again shooting a glare his way.
Joe pursed his lips, looking ahead to see Scorpiomon flip itself back over.
“Tail Blade!” Scorpiomon cried out, a blast of energy from his claws shot towards Togemon, but Ikkakumon dove in the way as best as his large body could let him, shrugging off the blow.
“Is that all you got!?” Ikkakumon taunted, swiping a claw at Scorpiomon.
“Guys, you have three minutes now. You NEED to hurry!”
“We know, Izzy. We’re working on it,” Mimi said, pausing for a moment before turning her attention back to her partner.
“We can get new shirts for you, you know,” Mimi told him.
Joe stayed quiet, as Ikkakumon hopped backwards, Joe making sure that Mimi was out of the way of any debris from the road that flew when his Digimon landed.
“You’re ok?” Joe asked, and Mimi nodded, offering him the first smile she had all afternoon.
“Yeah, thanks,” she said, before forcing a pout on her face.
Joe noticed immediately, and furrowed his brow, “Its the principle of the matter, not the fact that the shirts are pink,” he told her.
“So you agree that you like the pink shirts and look good in them?” she immediately asked, hands on her hips, an eyebrow quirked with a sense of smug satisfaction.
Joe blushed, “That’s not the point! The point is you should have made sure to separate the colors!”
“Well I’ll make sure next time!” she said, admittedly pleased to see him turn red like that.
“Maybe we can do the laundry together if you want? It could help us cut down on the time we spend working on it between the folding and the sorting?” Joe suggested.
“That could be fun!” she chirped, now seeming in a far better mood than earlier, “And it could also help with you learning all the ins and outs of washing things that are… let’s say Mimi-specific?” she said, Joe stammering out a few non-words in embarrassment.
“Y-Yeah…” he said quietly, swallowing hard, before Izzy’s voice cut in.
“Ninety seconds! Is Scorpiomon on the beach yet?”
Joe and Mimi looked at each other, grimaces settling on their faces at the same time.
“We’re on it!” they shouted at the same time, now focused on their partners, who were still scrapping with Scorpiomon. Togemon had taken a few steps back to get a breather, and Ikkakumon and Scorpiomon were currently grappling, each vying for control.
“I’m glad you two lovebirds made up, but we could use a little help here!” Ikkakumon roared, being pushed back into the street, asphalt and concrete flying.
“If you can get Scorpiomon off you, launch him onto the beach!” Joe shouted.
“Togemon! Once Scorpiomon is on the beach, we need you to pin him down! We’ll stand by where the Digital Gate is going to open!” Mimi shouted. Togemon waved in confirmation, before Mimi grabbed Joe’s hand, yanking on his arm and pulling him over to the beach.
“We’ve almost got it, Izzy, how long until the gate opens?” Mimi asked, Joe letting out a yelp as they maneuvered around a now half-destroyed car to get onto the sand.
“Sixty seconds,” their friend confirmed.
They watched as Ikkakumon pushed the foe off of him, jumping back. Togemon was already running towards the beach where the couple was.
“Harpoon Torpedo!” Ikkakumon barked out, his horn shooting off his head before breaking apart to reveal the missile underneath. Whistling rang out in the air as it crashed into Scorpiomon, causing it to fly backwards onto the beach, struggling to get up.
Now they could see light shining up from the sand underneath where Scorpiomon lay. However, it didn’t stop the Digimon from getting up in an attempt to get away.
“Not so fast! Sit back, relax, and enjoy some Needle Spray!” Togemon shouted, needles from her body flying towards Scorpiomon, keeping it in place as it tried to cover itself with its claws.
Soon the light on the beach opened up into a portal, and Scorpiomon let out a cry as it sank through, disappearing not long after.
“Ok, it made it back to the Digital World. Good job you two. Thanks for covering it,” Izzy said, causing Mimi and Joe to smile at each other. Togemon had now turned back into Palmon, and Gomamon was already running over to meet up with the group.
“We did it! Can we get lunch now?” Gomamon asked.
Mimi giggled, “Well, we did do a pretty good job today! I think we can treat ourselves,” she said, pumping a fist into the air triumphantly.
“I can go for some lunch, too, I am feeling pretty hungry,” Joe said, setting his hand on his stomach.
“And thirsty! I could use some water!” Palmon added.
“And maybe afterwards we can pick you up some new shirts? My treat,” Mimi said as she padded over to Joe, giving him a hug.
“Then I’ll treat for lunch,” he nodded, hugging her back.
“Well, if Joe’s buying lunch, I vote sushi!” Gomamon said, Joe’s jaw dropping in response.
“Hey! Well if we’re getting sushi, then I’m making sure you aren’t going overboard!” Joe told Gomamon, who was already hopping off. Mimi was laughing, running along ahead with Palmon.
“Sushi sounds great! C’mon, Joe, let’s go!”

Fans of a God and his Believer (RotSH x TGCF Prompt)
Just got an Idea for a RotSH x TGCF Crossover.
Basically, somehow, no one decided to tell Naofumi and Kizuna there not only were there elves(classified as Demi-humans), jewel people, and spirit people in L'Arc's world, but also Actual Gods and Ghosts.
The way they find out is when they & co. stumble upon an abandoned temple seemingly centuries old, overgrown with plants and looking as if a light breeze could make it collapse.
(The reason they're all out adventuring together instead of making L'Arc rule his Kingdom, is because L'Arc just pushed that responsibility onto his advisors before sneaking out to join them all.)
Upon going inside, the group decide to explore, while Naofumi stared dumbfoundedly at the statue, the whole head except the jaw and left ear missing, and multiple other places missing bits and pieces, but mostly intact.
What catches Naofumi's attention, is what the statue holds, a flower in one hand, and a sword in the other.
When Kizuna asks why he's staring, Naofumi says it reminds him of one of his favorite stories back from his world, about a God and his Believer. Kizuna, amusedly, says the same.
The two stare at each other, and Naofumi asks her what God.
"His Highness the Crown Prince, The Prince Who Pleased The Gods, -" Kizuna says
"The Flower Crowned Martial God, Xie Lian of Xian Le." Naofumi finishes
The two stare at each other again, before breaking into questions mainly, "You know Heaven Official's Blessing?!".
The two fan over it for a while until the rest came back.
Kizuna was grumpy after hearing that Naofumi's world had gotten Manhua and a Donghua, while she was summoned before hers could even get translated to English.
They'd made an agreement to check if the fiction of their worlds might be reality mixed into this world.
So when the rest comes back, Naofumi asks them if they know who the God of this Temple is.
L'Arc answers that he's not sure, as most people up here in the north worship the God, General Ming Guang.
Naofumi and Kizuna side-eye each other, 'Ming Guang?! General Pei Ming is real here too! Hell yeah, more proof!'
A few weeks of traveling later, as the sun is setting and a village is on the horizon. As L'Arc looks at a map and everyone is idling in the carriage drawn by two horses, Naofumi asks what the village is called.
"Hmm, Piqu Village, from what the map says."
Kizuna, who'd been taking a sip of water, suddenly chokes and starts coughing, prompting Glass to sorry and pat her back to help.
They all end up being led to the little Shrine to ask for any places to camp, Puqi Shrine, kept by the nice Shrine Keeper dressed in white and almost always accompanied by a youth dressed in red.
Naofumi and Kizuna once again gave each other side glances and restrained smiles of big fans, as they'd done each time they came across a major temple for one of the Gods in their favorite story. They'd already spent countless hours comparing, and found that their two favorite stories were completely identical.
Therese and Raphtalia were the ones to go to the Shrine and ask the keeper if he knew any good spots for camping around, and they were pointed in the direction of a stream.
Naofumi and Kizuna pointedly decided not to engage in any way with the Shrine Keeper, just in case it would really be the Xie Lian, and they would accidentally start fanpersoning.
But Therese did also mention that the Shrine Keeper introduced himself as Xie Lian, a humble shrine keeper for the Crown Prince of Xian Le.
Naofumi had not choked on his food. He had not.
Months of traveling and fighting the Waves later, the group some-fucking-how find themselves in Ghost City, of all places.
Naofumi and Kizuna are absolutely admiring the place as they wander around, as are the rest of the group.
And no, Naofumi and Kizuna did not squeal and absolutely did not stop and stare when they stumbled upon the entrance to the Gambler's Den.
And also no, they did not freeze and did not gasp when they saw the silhouette of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian sitting upon the divan behind the red curtains, and they did not gasp again when they saw a split second of Yin Yu leaving the Gambler's Den.
They did not.
(By the opinion of everyone else in their group, they absolutely did. The two will forever argue that they did not.)

The Last One Wins | 03
01 | 02 | 03 | 04
Notes: This chapter is mainly why I’ve included the warning for minor Kizuna spoilers. And, not really a spoiler, but I made sure I got the name of Koushiro’s company correct in this. We have Kou/Izzy to thank for everything that happens in this chapter. <3
Hope you enjoy this one!
Chapter 3: The Admission of Defeat
It took a few weeks for Matt to get used to living in space. Even after a few years of intensive training, he found it interesting to get a grasp on the absence of gravity, and being used to being suspended midair.
Before taking off, Matt and his fellow crew members were surprised to find out that they would be the first group to test out video conferencing capabilities in the International Space Station. All five agencies, including JAXA and NASA, had been working with Izumi Corporation for implementation by the time the next crew arrived at the station. Matt wouldn't have thought that Izzy would reveal that it had been a top secret project even to him, but it was nice to chat with a friendly face occasionally while they were both on the job.
Matt had gotten along with the group of crew members with him, but he always looked forward to his weekly video calls with Sora. He had to hand it to Izzy - six months without being able to see the love of his life, and otherwise communicating minimally through email and video recordings would have been a very lonely time.
There was one particular call a few months in space that Matt had been both looking forward to and dreading at the same time.
It was always a joy for him to see Sora's eyes light up the moment her face appeared on screen and she realized he was looking at her on his side of the atmosphere.
"Hey, Sora," Matt said with a smile. He was dressed down to a casual cotton shirt and jeans since it was his day off.
"Well, if it isn't the 'space man'!" Tai said from the top corner of the screen.
"Matt?!" Mimi's face appeared. "Oh, look at you!"
"Hey, guys!" Matt replied as the whole gang of faces, including his brother, his friends, and their respective spouses, of which the female counterparts had enlarged bellies at various stages of their pregnancies. He had known that Yolei's baby had the earliest due date, thereby making Ken win the Takari Bet, but there had been other news that he had been waiting to tell everyone until that moment.
Izzy was there, too, giving a friendly wave, and even Joe had shown up; he usually made a rare appearance since he was so busy.
But Matt was amused at how Sora managed to convince every one of their friends to gather together this time around.
"Sora must've given you a convincing reason to show up today," Matt said with a chuckle.
"Why wouldn't we be here?" Davis chimed in, seeming to squeeze in between Tai and Izzy. "We wanted to talk to Mr. Cool Guy In Space!"
"It is pretty neat to see how normal it can look up there," Iori observed.
"Aside from that pen floating by his head," added Kari.
Matt looked to Sora who had been smiling but keeping her lips tight. He flashed a knowing smile.
"Sora, why don't you tell them what's really happening?"
"What?"
Every head turned to Sora, and her smile grew from ear to ear.
"Everyone," she began, after taking a deep breath. "I'm finally ready to tell you - I'm pregnant!"
The cheers erupted on Sora's end of the call. Mimi was the first to leap toward Sora to hug her. Matt laughed as he watched Tai, Davis, and TK cheering in excitement.
Matt was relieved that it was out in the open. He was the first to find out about a month into being in the International Space Station, when he and Sora cried with joy together over video chat. Seeing her glowing smile as she hugged all of her friends urged him to break into tears once again.
"I... guess I'm having... a kid last then...eh... Matt?" Tai said, putting his arm around Sora after they exchanged a hug.
Matt hoped that his glare pierced through Tai all the way from space. He knew that Tai's dragged out question was to emphasize his smug acknowledgment of achievement. Matt had known all along that he wasn't going to win the Takari Bet. He had already mentally accepted defeat; the only thing he dreaded was the moment that Tai discovered his inevitable victory.
Besides that, Sora still hadn't known about their competition, and Matt wasn't about to let Tai tell her about it now.
But Sora raised her brow as she looked at Tai's smirk.
"I wouldn't be surprised, given that you're a kid in a grown man's body," Sora replied.
Matt couldn't have been happier to see the change of Tai's expression.
"Hey, I got married, didn't I? That makes me a grown up."
"Yeah," said Matt. "She still married a kid."
"Matt's right," Tai's wife said in the background.
Sora and Matt began to laugh as Tai was at a loss on how to respond next. He and his own wife - he loved how they made a great team against Tai.
Their laughter was cut short, however, when they heard an odd groan from off camera.
"Whoa, honey, you alright?" Davis asked as he and the others turned to the direction where the sound came from. Sora and Tai disappeared and Davis followed quickly. TK appeared on camera next.
"TK, what's going on?" Matt asked.
But Davis' loud announcement answered for him: "We've gotta go. Her water just broke!"
Davis' words were of cheer, and Matt swore he heard some mischievous cackling. Although no one else said anything, Matt knew why. The due date for Davis' baby was set for after Yolei's baby. At that moment, Yolei screamed as she jumped up out of her chair.
"No!" she cried, and everyone fell silent as they looked at her. "...way!" she added.
"Don't start this now, Yolei," Matt heard Ken say as he grabbed her shoulders and walked toward the door where everyone else was headed. Ken had put his brave face on, knowing how this affected the Takari Bet. He also seemed to show a slight tinge of annoyance, but Matt could only empathize with the other man who also had to admit defeat.
Then Kari appeared on screen, and Sora popped in next to TK soon after. "Hey hon," Sora said. "Looks like the party's over. We're all heading to the hospital soon."
"Okay, then," said Matt. "Love you."
"Love you!" Sora said before disappearing again. "TK, turn off the camera?"
"Hai, Onee-san!" said TK.
"Aren't you both going, too?" Matt asked TK and Kari next to him, who grinned with giddiness.
"In a bit." TK then shared a glance with Kari before looking at the camera and lowering his voice. "Listen, when you get back, do you think you could spare some yen?"
Knowing this was referring to Ken's loss, Matt responded with, "You can make 5000 yen easily, TK."
"It's 25,000," Kari replied.
Matt grimaced. "That's still money you can make, but you really put that much money for your bets?"
"I bet the 5K on Ken being first.. And you know me and Kari, we go all in for our big bros."
Matt rolled his eyes as TK smiled with his tongue sticking out.
"Sora said to turn off the camera."
"You love me, right?"
"We'll talk later, TK. Bye, Kari."
Matt ignored the air smooches that TK and Kari scrunched their lips together side by side as Matt pushed to end the call.
~*~*~*~*~*~
About a month before Matt was set to return to Japan, Sora sent a message for him to get in touch with her as soon as he could. It had become the norm for them to have weekly video chats, so having a call in the middle of the week was out of the ordinary for him.
In fact, Matt was worried about why she wanted to talk to him so soon. He wondered if something went wrong back on Earth; maybe, if she found out some news about the baby.
When her face appeared on the video call screen, he couldn't read her expression.
"Hey, love," she said. "I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time."
"No, not at all, Sora," Matt replied, trying to hide his anxiety as he waited for her reason.
"There's someone I want you to see."
Someone? His eyes immediately moved to her stomach, where he saw that she was still carrying their first born inside of her belly.
Sora laughed as she recognized where he was looking. "I knew you'd assume it was the baby. We've still got a ways to go."
Matt had to laugh in relief. He expected to be at her side the moment their child was born and he wouldn't have missed it for the world.
"Okay, then, who is this someone?" he asked.
That was when Sora moved to the side from the camera and Matt drew in a long breath of surprise.
A familiar face appeared and drew closer to the screen, her bright blue eyes blinking and her beak seeming to touch the screen from the other side. Her pink feathers nearly covered the whole screen.
"Matt! Sora? Can he see me?"
"You don't have to stand so close to it, Biyomon," said Sora, giggling.
Matt was at a loss for words.
"Do you remember how Izzy said he would find a way to bring our Digimon back to us?" Sora asked Matt. "He found a way, Matt. He did it."
Matt's eyes began to sting with tears while he saw Sora wipe her eyes with the back of her hands. He remembered the very moment his own Digimon partner was gone, and those times afterward when he cradled Sora in his arms as she cried about losing hers.
"And now Sora has a Digi-Egg in her tummy!" Biyomon chirped.
"Is that what you told her?" Matt asked Sora, laughing as he wiped his tears away.
"I promise to help take care of your daughter in any way that I can!"
"Before you ask, Matt," Sora added. "She's not the only one who wants to help."
Matt couldn't believe his eyes with what happened next. Sora and Biyomon turned to look off camera, and Sora spoke a name that, even as he'd hoped, Matt didn't think he would hear again.
"Gabumon, why are you so far away?" Biyomon asked.
"Sora said not to stand so close to the camera," Gabumon said with a pout.
"Come over here, so that Matt can see you!" Sora said.
As soon as the blue furried Digimon appeared on screen, he blinked and he smiled cheerfully.
"It's so good to see you, Matt," he said.
"Gabumon…"
Matt couldn't stop crying. He wondered if he was crying as hard as he did when Gabumon disappeared before his very eyes. His tears blurred his vision, and he might have been convinced that Gabumon would disappear as soon as the tears washed the unbelievable sight away.
"Gabumon, are you real?" Matt had to ask.
"As real as the Digi-Egg inside of Sora!" Gabumon said with a grin.
"She told you that, too."
Matt was laughing now with his tears streaming down. That moment was enough to believe that Gabumon was real, and so was Biyomon, and the fact that only Izzy would find the miracle to bring the Digimon partners back. He couldn't wait to return home to hold Sora, and to hug Gabumon, two figures of his life that made him feel whole.
