Yakima Canyon, WA (No. 5)
Near the south end of the Yakima River Canyon, which cuts across the Umtanum Ridge, SR 821 crosses into Kittitas County. The two-lane highway generally runs along the bottom of the canyon, to the east of the river and railroad and paralleled to the east by I-82. At its south end, the highway passes downhill from an earlier alignment that was tunneled under a section of the ridge. At Roza Dam, the railroad crosses over to the west side of the river while SR 821 stays uphill from the river, cutting through part of the ridge. The highway continues north, following the cliffs along the meandering river and opposite the railroad and the Wenas Wildlife Area to the west. It passes through 9,000 acres (3,600 ha) of land owned by the Bureau of Land Management, which includes several campgrounds, boat launches, and four recreational areas. The area also has several cattle ranches and farms centered around the Burbank Valley. Midway through the valley, SR 821 passes the Canyon River Ranch, an isolated rest area with shops, restaurants, and cabins that is planned to grow into a resort.

Separated Together: Roslyn Historical Cemeteries
It's not really Cicely, Alaska: it just played it on TV. The town of Roslyn, in Kittitas County, is perhaps best known as its quirky alter ego in the 1990s television program: Northern Exposure. In real life, it's a quiet small town in the Cascade Mountains. Downtown buildings still evoke the nineteenth century, while some area homes are pure Norman Rockwell, complete with white picket fences. The population has remained steady, in the nine hundreds, for years.
In fact, here the dead outnumber the living 5 to 1.
This is because the town, founded in 1886, has kept generations of its deceased close to home. Specifically, they're in the forested hills along Pennsylvania Avenue, on a fifteen-acre expanse comprising twenty-six separate but contiguous cemeteries. Collectively, they're referred to as the Roslyn Historical Cemeteries.
By walking the grounds, there are two things you quickly realize about Roslyn's past. First, its coal-mining industry attracted a multinational, multiethnic mix of workers. Poles, Italians, Slovakians, and other nationalities were well represented, as were African Americans-all sharing the town in relative peace. Secondly, folks here loved organizing themselves into fraternal organizations: Along with the Masons, Odd Fellows, Moose, and Eagles, lesser known societies like the Red Men and Sokol had lodges in Roslyn.
These groups and nationalities all have dedicated cemetery space. Veterans have a place of honor right in front, in what resembles a mini-Arlington. Then there are general-purpose burial grounds like the Old and New City cemeteries. The Old City Cemetery is the most antique, with its family plots fenced in to keep out foraging animals.
Roslyn suffered its greatest disaster on May 10, 1892, when a mine explosion killed forty-five workers. The memory of this tragedy is literally etched in stone throughout the cemeteries on the grave markers of some of those killed.
Though the grounds are mostly well kept, many of the graves, particularly those corresponding to defunct lodges, are showing their age. This contributes to the "long ago and far away" aura permeating Roslyn in general and the cemeteries in particular.

Mel's hole!!! My local homegrown cryptid... I'm so proud :')
Legend has it that artifacts like a WWII-era pistol and coins (I think a dime?) were also found near the hole. Also, I believe he called into the show multiple times over several years, each time updating listeners on new odd events and phenomena related to the hole. It's a tradition for CWU students and local teens in the know to go looking for Mel's Hole, although Ididn't know there was a definitive location. I've heard it's on the Yakima military training area, and that it's on Yakama Nation land.
Those pictures do look like Kittitas County, but it's the first time I've seen pics of an actual "Mel's Hole". Tbh I think he just made it up for attention, but maybe there's some truth in the story somewhere?
Mel’s Hole
In 1997 a man named Melvin Waters called into the radio show Coast to Coast AM with Art Bell. On the show he made the claim that on his property in Ellensburg Washington (Kittitas County) was a magical bottomless hole.
Mel said he sent down over 15 miles (over 80k feet) of fishing line with a weight attached to the end but was unable to find a bottom which led him to proclaim the hole as bottomless.
He stated that his neighbors mostly used it as a trash dump but some of them would use it as a place to dump their dead pets, only to be horrified when those dead pets would come back to life. He also claimed to have seen UFO activity nearby.
After his segment on the radio show was aired, he claimed that he was blocked from his own property due to some kind of “plane crash” and that he was warned by uniformed officials to not interfere and that if he did, a drug lab could easily be “found” on his property. The same uniformed officials offered to lease his property from him to which he agreed.
Local news reporters who investigated the claims found no public records of anyone named Mel Waters ever residing in, or owning property in Kittitas County
