NHK World Japan : A Demon-Cutting Sword
Legend has it that in 10th Century Japan, Kyoto was attacked by demons that devour humans. A Samurai wielding the Onikirimaru, managed to slay them all. The sword is preserved till this day the Kitano-tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto. Minamoto no Mitsunaka commissioned the sword to protect the earthly realm.

Mitarashi Festival 2023 御手洗祭
I went to the Mitarashi Festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.  They also had a bunch of Tanabata Festival decorations up.
Tumblr media
Like at Shimogamo Shrine, we walked to the creek and lit candles. The colors of candles have various meanings. Blue candles are used to improve one's artistic ability and sports performance, red candles are used to bring good luck and family happiness, yellow candles are used to improve one's financial fortune and bring good luck and fortune, white candles are used to fulfill one's wishes and find employment, and purple candles are used to ensure one's safety and prolong one's life.

The festival got its start at Shimogamo Shrine, and is where the famous Mitarashi Dango were invented.  The name comes from the place where you perform ritual hand washing before entering the shrine, hence "Hand Washing Festival". The festival itself is to pray for good health and a long life, while you wade through a stream.  I've included pictures from the Shimogamo Mitarashi Festival below as well!

Yokai Street in Kyoto, known formally as Taishogun Shopping Street. Nestled near Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, this narrow street is lined with shops, cafes, and stalls, each decked out with quirky yokai-themed decorations.
Many of the decorations pay homage to well-known yokai, like Kappa, Tengu, and Rokurokubi, with hand-crafted sculptures, masks, and paintings.
Legend has it that this street lies on the ancient "demon's path" and may even be the route of the Hyakki Yagyo, the infamous "Parade of One Hundred Demons." In this supernatural procession, yokai of all kinds march through the streets, a fearsome spectacle where humans would wisely avoid crossing paths.

41 Yasaka Jinja - Kyoto Kagai 八坂神社:
Tumblr media
Yasaka Jinja is a faithful recreation of some of that Shrine of the same name in Kyoto dedicated to Susano-no-Mikoto, on a region that recreates some of that historic city. There is also goshuin available from the Inari Shrine that is just to the East, and also goshuin available at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to the south. Yet more Shrines are scattered across the city, as they are. This region is inhabited by geisha who hold entertainment events at various venues around the sim.
