AllMusic Staff Pick: Dry & Heavy King Jammy Meets Dry and Heavy in the Jaws of the Tiger
In a fascinating meeting between reggae legend King Jammy and Japanese roots reggae duo Dry & Heavy, Jammy took tapes from two previous Dry & Heavy albums back to his Kingston studios and dubbed them up in fine, roots-wise style, employing all the tricks of echo, reverb, and drop-out that he learned at the feet of the master; the result is a masterpiece of dark and heavy dub that serves as a perfect companion to the albums on which it's based.

SLY & ROBBIE VS ROOTS RADICS lanzan THE DUB BATTLE
Dubbed en Studio City Sound (Los Angeles, USA), King Jammy’s Studio (Waterhouse, JM), Afro Recording Studio (Lanús, ARG), Ariwa Sounds (London, UK), Di Gorgon’s Studio (Kingston, JM), Jah Wayne Records (Negril, JM), King Tubby’s Studio (Waterhouse, JM). Masterizado en Afro Recording Studio (Lanús, ARG) por Facundo Jara. Arte: Ohoroho. Label: Serious Reggae, Dubshot Records, CSSL.

Vintage [Jamacian] Studios: The first studios ever created
Federal Location:Kingston, Jamaica) — Probably the oldest studio of significant importance. Owned by Ken Khouri, the man who first licensed American records in the island ,and also the first label there.Federal Records. He opened his studio in 1961 and some of the first Jamaican r’n’b and ska singles and productions by Dod,Reid,Buster and Lloyd “Matador” Dale were cut there.
Stuff was recorded there in the 60s and 70s too ,but comparing the material here it with that in Studio One or Joe Gibbs is very poor.I have found many albums and compialtions that were only partly recorded here. Some songs were some weren’t.Artists were cutting singles anyway and some of them foudn their way in albums-or not.
Anyway the significance of the studio is that it was the first.Jamaican jazz,r’n’b ,boogie,Mento were recorded here ,and when the first Ska wave exploded ,things happened here first too.Khouri was the one that Dood and the others followed in order to build studios to record Jamaican music and play it in their Soundsystems.Sell it too...
Studio One (Location:Kingston, Jamaica) — Treasure Isle and Studio One were rivals in every department.Soundsystems,labels,studios.This rivalry and antagonism was beneficial for the reggae world.Treasure Isle and Studio One’s legacy is difficult to suprass.Riddims created in those two studios are susd till today. In the roots era many of those old riddims used again ,and again and again.
The legacy of Studio One is enormous. The sound created in the studio, the emphasis on the bass, the patterns…Studio One is the heart of reggae.
Coxsone Dodd started as a soundsystem owner (Downbeat) but when the time ws right he builded his own studio to produce and sell music. In 1963 Studio One was ready to write history.Coxsone Dodd’s innovative recording techinques , left us with the best documents of the Ska era. Also in the rockseady and ealry reggae era amazing things happened in Studio One...
Treasure Isle (Location Kingston,Jamaica)...
Dynamic Sounds (Location: Kingston,Jamaica)...
Randy’s (Location:Kingston,Jamaica)...
King Tubby’s (Location:Kingston,Jamaica)...
Harry J (Location:Kingston, Jamaica)...
Black Ark (Location:Kingston,Jamaica)...
Channel One (Location:Kingston,Jamaica)...
Joe Gibbs (Location:Kingston,Jamaica)...
Tuff Gong (Location:Kingston,Jamaica) — Tuff Gong was Bob Marley’s nickname. And label. And recording studio.Relcoated in his house in 1977 the studio attracted many famous reggae artists (and not only famous) to record there. After Bob’s death the studio relocated elsewhere ,its current site. The 80s were a good time from the studio , where music by high caliber artists is recorded till today.
The first one of his albums that Bob recorded there was Survival at 1979.
Some that recorded there were:Don Carlos,Cultural Roots,Israel Vibration,Jacob Miller,Burning Spear,Dennis Brown,Junior Reid,Freddie McGregor.
Island wanted their artisst to be recorded here.Gregory Issacs,The Cool Ruler, recorded the big international hit Night Nurse here.
Errol Brown was an engineer in many of those recordings ,also in Marley’s albums.he formerly worked for Sonnia Pottinger’s Treasure Isle among others.
The studio has count on Marley’s stardom, and its good equipment to continuing to this day being relevant in Jamaica.
Since we talked about Marley here i guess it’s a good time to talk a bit about the concept of overdubs in reggae and its importance.
When labels like Trojan were importing stuff to sell in UK,they sometimes made some changes to the material.Remixing, adding strings, making the tempo faster to fullfill skinhead reggae requirements etc.
Trojan did it with success but when the attitude towards reggae changed in UK ,they stopped doing it.Those tweaks were made to make the music closer to Western music standards.Despite that there is tons of Trojan material without tweaks.

Audiothing Release ALBOROSIE DUB STATION
Audiothing Release ALBOROSIE DUB STATION
FILTER, ECHO, SPRING BY ALBOROSIE
Straight from the heart of Jamaica’s most prolific music community, Waterhouse in Kingston, we proudly introduce you the Alborosie Dub Station.
We sampled, analyzed, and carefully recreated the original filter, echos, and spring reverb pre-owned, modified, and used by the legendary Osbourne Ruddock “King Tubby” – producer, studio engineer, and pioneer of dub reggae from the golden era of the 70s – from Alborosie’s personal vintage gear collection.
ECHOWUK: directly from federal studios, then King Tubby studio in Waterhouse Kingston, the MCI 2 track tape that was used to record and also to create the echo effect for most of the reggae classics overall and popular Tubby’s instrumental dub mixes.
SPRING BLING: directly from King Tubby studio in Waterhouse Kingston, the modified Fairchild Spring Reverb used by the Maestro himself in most classic records and dub mixes he recorded and produced.
FILTER MAN: modeled after Tubby’s so-called “Big Knob”, a passive high-pass filter with eleven frequency steps from 70Hz to 7.5KHz. This filter defined the sound of the entire ‘roots’ area of Jamaican music!
Special thanks to Lloyd James “King Jammy” for the continuous inspiration and guidance.

ALBOROSIE
Real name Alberto D’Ascola, he was born in the Sicilian town of Marsala, Italy. He formed the Reggae National Tickets, who regularly toured Europe during the mid-to-late nineties. As the Millennium approached, the Tickets performed in Jamaica and the island immediately enveloped Alborosie in its spell, prompting him to jump ship and take a job as an engineer at Gee Jam studios in Port Antonio – a tropical hideaway on Jamaica’s north coast where Amy Winehouse, No Doubt, and many other foreign and local stars liked to record.
“I just wanted to be close to the music that I loved, and that I couldn’t find in Italy. That is the main story behind my journey so all I want to do now is contribute to the genre and bring it to the next level – to carry the flag, or even just help someone else carry the flag”
In 2011, he became the first white artist to win the M.O.B.O. (Music of Black Origin) Awards in the Best Reggae Act category.

{{ - ̗̀ –– ( nina dobrev, 27, cisfemale, she/her. ) hey, is that lennon markovski over there? rumor has it, they’re one of those townies. they’ve lived in erith springs for twenty-two years and are currently working as a manager at a book store. i’ve heard they’re pretty independent, it’s just too bad they’re also self-destructive. they remind me of restless nights, unsent letters, and stained sneakers –– ( em, 23, cst, she/her ) }}
ayye my it’s your girl, em, here with my little pot-headed beauty. please come plot with me because i’m needy for all the things and so is lennon. like this post and ill come crawling to your inbox for things .
without furhter ado please read below if you want to make your dash full of bullet points of all things lennon!
{{ summary }}
lennon, grew up in a small family: her parents, petar and kathleen, herself, and the family’s pet bunny, petals (a name her mother chose). it was from all accounts aggressively normal for the first seven years of lennon’s life. that was until the car crash that changed the markovski’s forever.
lennon quickly learned how to care for herself and others because her parent’s mentally just couldn’t. petar and kathleen, would have rather found different ways to get lost in their own minds by the use of different prescription drugs than take care of their own daughter. lennon didn’t mind, though, to her young mind this was her new normal. she didn’t truly realize the actions she had to take were wrong for a minor. these were her parents and lennon did what her parents needed even if that meant forgetting about what she needed.
fast forward eighteen years to a wised up lennon, who no longer spoke to her drug addicted excuse of parents, the beauty was making it the best she could. she now managed the books store she started working at from the very young age of fourteen. the bookstore owner, looked at lennon as somewhat of a daughter, they spent holidays and birthdays together. in a weird way, the two lost souls made their own weird version of a family. it wasn’t much but it was all lennon had -- that and that stupid fucking bunny, petals, that just reminds, lennon, of her mom, or as lennon refers to her as “the blonde one”.
{{ bullet points }}
lennon is 1/4 bulgarian, her father is 1/2, and her grandparent’s are of course whole but she has never met them.
lennon has met her mother’s parents but they are miserable rich assholes that don’t care about anything but their image. and seeing as lennon currently lives eight hours away from them they do not speak -- ever
a studio apartment is lennon’s permanent residence that contains the aesthetic of a frat guy.
she absolutely can’t stand sitcom tv shows all the mushy family stuff grosses her out
do NOT do any drugs near lennon besides pot bc lbr its not even a drug
selling pot is her side hustle
lennon has never been in a relationship longer than three months due to her being addicted to the thrill of the honeymoon phase.
if anything gets harder than lennon thinks it should be she dips out.
lennon is aggressively non-committal (how cliche lennon)
she is an aspiring writer but her writer’s block is currently horrendous
she has a secret love for naughty books
lennon often gets in trouble for reading books while on the clock but she knows miles (the owner) is too chicken shit to do anything about it
alanis morissette is her favorite artist along
lennon has a secret love affair for all things disney. as a child she desperately wanted to go and see disney world but of course she never did. on the weekends you can definitely find her wrapped up in her jammies watching the lion king on vhs that’s been rewound about thousand times.
on thursdays lennon volunteers at the animal shelter because she has a deep love for animals
thats all for now folks if any of this hits marks for you or your charra hmu, my dude! erithsprings.intro
#erithsprings.intro#tw: drugs#tw: pot#i think i tagged them all let a girl know if you need something tagged!!

#117 - Laminated Denim - King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard (2022)
Who can complain about more King Gizz in their lives? A band with such a consistently good discography with works of all varieties. They never leave me bored, and they haven’t now. This is their 2nd studio release this month after their mouthful of a record Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, And Lava. In this album, we get a sequel to their once vinyl exclusive I.D.M. album, Made In Timeland, a 30-minute album with two 15-minute songs. Much like that album, we have a 30-minute record with two 15-minute songs, however, they continue their more jammy sound from Omnium Gatherum (specifically in The Dripping Tap) and Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms, And Lava, combing their psychedelic progressive rock sound, with a bit of a space rock or krautrock tint to their lense. Believe it or not, this is one of the strongest and most masterfully done Gizzard records I have heard so far in their career, strangely enough.
The first of only two songs, The Land Before Timeland, introduce you into this world the band has made up and takes you on a tour through lush guitars, harmonies, drummings, and melodies that wrap you around this rather calm yet still jammy song. What I love most about this is that even with the calm demeanor you can still feel the rising action. As the song progresses things get faster, more chords are introduced, and this jovial sense of wonder gets refined more and more. It doesn’t blow down the doors at the end, but there is a clear sense of movement and change within the music. I just adore the mood this song has. It is so fun and bouncy that it just makes me get into a good mood. This applies to most King Gizzard songs but here is how they capture it and let it ride and rise through this 15-minute jam makes me, in my mind, clap with joy. This is an aspect that I dig with the original Made In Timeland album and while things felt within the same song, you can tell things changed despite the consistency. Here they also do that but even better. It doesn’t even feel like 15 minutes, it is like taking a nice long shower and getting out as if time hadn’t passed at all. It is almost spooky how a good long song does that. What a song, and it isn’t even the only one.
With the rising action of The Land Before Timeland, we jump into Hypertension, which is also fantastic. Here you can fear their energy just pouring, but still retaining the beauty and happiness the last song portrayed. I love King Gizzard due to how no matter what genre they twist and turn to they will always keep the mood up consistently. Never once in their discography, from their garage rock era to their brief ventures in synthpop did I feel their vibes and energy lose their weight. I think here they are capturing that energy into a photograph and stapling it in their photo album because I can just feel it all with this song. Fast-moving guitars, unique drum patterns, eccentric vocals, extremely satisfying bass patterns, and even some keyboards were added in for good measure. Every aspect here plays a role, and the roles they play are so well done that the band can play a game of chess blindfolded and still win. They are just that well performed. That ending too of those choir singing-like synths just raises the bar further and further until it falls apart and we get back into the fun-filled jams until that also falls apart with an immediate release of tension that builds up throughout the record. I'd say that is a great way to end this boisterous record.
Funny how one of the shortest King Gizzard albums turns out to be one of, if not the best albums they have put out. Just two songs and it’s already one of my favorite albums of this year. It is such a fun listen that does not take very long in establishing itself in my brain. It is fast, jovial, and some of the best works the band has put out in this month, if not in this year, if not in their entire careers. I recommend listening to this. Grab a pair of headphones and just let the music wash you away with those groovy grooves and those beautiful arrangements.
5/5

The series follows the plight of teenage grime MC Dionne ( Chanelle 'Shystie' Scott ), as she tries to achieve her dream of obtaining a major-label record deal to help provide for her grandmother. He'll be digging deep into his bag of plates to play some of the most sought after tracks from back in the day, many of which coined the language of drum ’n’ bass but were forgotten or written out of official histories of the scene, talking through his life in drum 'n' bass from behind the record shop counter and on the roster of one of the great labels.
