I got Crusader Kings III and am playing King Alfred the Great and it makes me so happy that he's still alive currently, 19 years after his real-life death and the King of England and Wales (with almost all the de jure land).
He is not long for this world so sadly it will probably be his heir (his grandson, because he's lives so long that his oldest son went and died aged 50 waiting to take over šŸ˜…) that attempts to bring Scotland and/or Ireland into the fold.

Aethelgifu, The Teenage Abbess: A Peak Inside The Walls Of The Shaftesbury Abbey
[Gold Hill, Shafesbury] Silence isnā€™t empty, itā€™s full of answers. It was a chilly day, this fourth day of October. Chilly and windy. Mariam and I had just had a very enjoyable lunch with a former student of mine, Sally, and her husband, Matthew. Sally was in my Geography class when I had the joy of being an exchange teacher at a school in southern Dorset. It was 1984-85 and after a decade orā€¦

"The story says he took refuge in Athelney, Somerset, where a swineherd's wife left him to watch the loaves cooking beside the fire. But Alfred was distracted by thinking hard about his fate and about how to fight back ā€“ and the loaves burned. The woman reproved him, not realising he was the King." The English used the story to mark a turning point in his life. "Whether or not the legend is true, Athelney was of massive significance to Alfred," explained Prof McTurk. "He built a fort, rallied his troops and from this point onwards did much better against the Vikings."

The costume design for Alfred
Tumblr media
They said they wanted to see Alfred in purple/gold tones, so I self-indulgently designed a costume for Alfred (though again not necessarily trying to be historical accurate)

Details for archaeology nerds (So it happens again I guess)
1. The tablet-woven bend
Design is loosely taken from an actual archaeological find from the Taplow Barrow in Buckinghamsire, dating to the early 7th century. The original piece really had the gold threads on it by the way. You can see the modern reconstruction here.

2. Pattern on the tunic
Taken from a part of an arcade illustration in the Royal Bible (Royal 1. E. vi, 4r.) c. 1000-1025 in British Library, London. Added some vine patterns that are quite common to see in insular art for reasons.
Tumblr media
3. Pattern on the shawl
Taken from a part of the stole and the maniple in St. Cuthbertā€™s coffin, dated to early 10th century, now in Durham Cathedral Museum.
Tumblr media
4. Embroidery on Alfredā€™s sleeves
The pattern is from an illustration in the manuscript of Bedeā€™s Life of St Cuthbert (MS 183, f. 1v) c. 937 in Parker Library, Cambridge, which depicts King Ɔthelstan showing the book to St Cuthbert himself.

Yesterday was Father's day. And I was a bit busy. So belatedly, I'd like to wish a Happy Father's Day to the wonderful DILFs of our tournament! They're not all good men (hell they're not all good fathers) but they are all HOT.

if i had a nickel for every time iā€™ve fallen in love with an ancient/ medieval king who succumbed to his illness early in life, iā€™d have two nickels. which isnā€™t a lot, but itā€™s weird that it happened twice.
