I wish the best of luck for Bill Tretiak on his retirement. He was the greatest bus driver of all time. I will miss seeing him drive the 85 every weekday.
Forty-seven years of driving bus is quite a long time and Dialga was hoping to be part of my birthday or his birthday, but sadly neither had you involved with our birthdays. You were the last Winnipeg Transit driver to be from the 1970s and the last serving driver to attend Jakov Obic's funeral back in 2003. I guess with you now retired, I have to draw stuff for Rick aka Mr. Invisible. He knows Jakov too, but doesn’t know his other siblings besides Ivan.
Thanks again for being the GBDOAT (Great Bus Driver of All Time), Bill. Happy retirement. Dialga will miss you dearly. But hey, he made it to 92. Now let’s hope he can make it to 93 next year.

"Krafchenko Said to Have Discussed Plum Coulee Robbery Weeks Ago," Winnipeg Tribune. December 5, 1913. Page 1. --- Bernard F.Doran Known In Local Sporting Circles as "Barney Doran" Tells Tribune Reporter Man Being Sought Not Only Talked it Over but Showed Plan of Building and Outlined Scheme of Getaway to Him ---- "Jack Krafchenko not only told me that he was going to rob the Plum Coulee branch of the Bank of Montreal, but he actually showed me a plan of the building and outlined his scheme for the getaway. He told me this in Flo Williams' house, on Kildonan road, at about 10 o'clock in the evening of the day he was released from the city police station, where he had been held for two or three days. In addition to myself, there was Ernest Larsen, and Bessie, a French girl, who was staying at the house, in the room at the time."
The foregoing remarkable statement was made to The Tribune representative this morning, by Bernard F. Doran, better known as "Barney Doran," well known in local sporting circles. The Tribune man was loath to believe that this statement was absolutely accurate, but pointing to the door of the police court he was sitting in the lobby at the time of the interview - he said, "I am willing to go in there and take my oath on the matter."
Continuing, Barney told of Krafchenko's visit to Flo Williams' house.
Came There Armed "Everybody knew that Jack," he said, meaning Krafchenko, "had something to do with the hold-up at Flo Williams place some time ago, and on the night of Jack's release from the police cells, where he had been placed on a charge of carrying a revolver, he came armed, together with about nine others, to the house and asked for Flo Williams. I met him at the door, and on hearing what he said and noting that he had a gun in his pocket and that his hand was upon it, I hit him over the head with a billy. He stumbled against a stove-pipe and this seemed to knock all the fight out of him. I don't want you, Barney, he told me, I want Flo Williams, because she put the cops hep to me.' He seemed to cool down bit, and although there had been plenty of folks in the house when Jack arrived, they all beat it. All except Bessie, she stayed."
Started Blowing "Bessie and I," continued Barney, "took Krafehenko aad Larsen into a back room - the others stayed in the parlor and we gave the two some thing to eat, and a drink. It was after supper that Krafchenko started blowing about what he was going to do in Manitoba. He then spoke of something he was about to pull off at Plum Coulee, where he knew the lay of the land. While he was talking he pulled a paper out of his pocket and showed me the plan of a building. He was just a little drunk and I didn't for a minute think he was doing anything but josh me. Bessie saw the plan, too.
Chased Him Out "After this he started in to talk about Flo Williams again. When he got too wild in his declarations as to what he would do to her I chased them both out of the place. They were quite decent, Larsen and Jack, because when I hit him the first time they both pulled their automatics and handed them to me, to show they meant no mischief.
Police Came Later "It was about an hour afterward that the police came to the house. Only Bessie and I were at the place the others had gone in the big limousine in which they came from Winnipeg. Chris Hansen, of the provincial force, was in charge and he asked what was the trouble. He said he had been notified by Flo Williams, or one of the others, who had beat it post haste to town and told the police that Jack Krafchenko, Enie Larsen and Tom Collins were beating up the place. I told him that everything was all right and the policemen went away."
"Do you want me to publish all this, Barney?" asked the reporter.
"Sure thing," replied Doran.
"Publish it. It's true, and I'm willing to swear to it.'
No Warrant for Arrest "You will note," said The Tribune reporter, to Sergeant-Detective George Smith, at the city police station, this morning. "there is a report to the effect that a warrant has been issued by your department for the arrest of Jack Krafchenko. Is this true?"
"It is not true," replied the officer. "This department has issued no warrant for this man, either for the Plum Coulee affair, or for any other affair." Mr. Smith went on to state that Krafchenko was certainly being earnestly sought on suspicion of being concerned in the affair but further than this there was no warrant out cor him.
The same information was forthcoming from Chief of Provincial Police Elliott. He declared that if a warrant had been issued for the man's arrest, it was certainly not by is department, or he would have heard of it. His men, he said, were joimag in the hunt for Krafchenko, for curtainly suspicion pointed in that direction, but no information, implicating the man, had been laid, and conse- quently there could, of necessity, be no warrant out.
A photograph of Krafchenko been distributed broadcast over has the country and in addition the city police have given out the following minute data of his description:
"Description of John Krafchenko, aliias Pearl Smith" - Nationality, alias Roumanian; age, 30 (1911); height, height, 5 ft. 5 in.; weight, 150 lbs.; complexion, dark; hair, dark brown; eyes, bluish grey; nose, pointed; face, round; build, medium; clean shaven; engineer and safe-blower: dimple on chin.
Notifies Every Port Fearing that the Plum Coulee desperadoes had made a clean get-a-way. Chief Elliott, of the provincial police withdrew his men last night from the district surrounding Morris, and kept the wires hot to every city and port the North American continent, questing the authorities to keep on a sharp look-out for men answering to the description of those who held up the Plum Coulee branch of the Bank of Montreal on Wednesday and murdered Manager Arnold.
On a former occasion, when Krafchenko committed a crime similar to that for which he is now under suspicion, he succeeded in throwing the police off the scent by going straight to his old home in Roumania. This time if he should attempt it he will be stopped at any port from which he tries to sail. Chief Elliott was engaged all night getting in touch with the police in Canadian and American ports, instructing them to hold Krafchenko on suspicion of murder. Once detained he will be brought back to Winnipeg on another charge for which he is wanted by the city police.
Not Held by Police William Dyck, the Plum Coulee liveryman and chauffeur, is not held by the police as stated in a morning paper. Deputy Chief Mackenzie stated this morning that Dyck could not possibly identify id either of the robbers from the photograph of Krafchenko in the possession of the city police, even if the Roumanian were implicated, which is not by any means certain.
Dyck has stated positively to the police that both the men who forced him to drive them at the point of automatic pistols from the scene of their crime were heavily masked, and did not remove the masks (which completely obscured their features) during the whole time that they were within his range of vision.
A curious feature in connection with the affair, which still remains to be satisfactorily explained, is the finding beneath the front seat of the automobile of two bags of silver. Dyck says that he knows nothing of the money, and does not know how it got there, but the police point out that it would be difficult for anyone to lift the cushion and the wooden framework of the seat next to the driver, place the money where it was found, replace the cushion and framework, without the knowledge of the man who was at the wheel. Dyck, however, is well known in Plum Coulee, has been established in the livery business for some time, owns two automobiles besides rigs and horses, and residents of the town refuse to believe that he was connected in any way with the hold-up men other than in the ordinary way of business. The provincial police apparently incline to the belief, and Deputy Chief Mackenzie, although reticent on the subject of Krafchenko, stated positively that Dyck was not held by the police, that he did not know where he was, that the same thing might happen to any liveryman or chauffeur, and that he supposed that Dyck had gone back to his business in Plum Coulee.

Before cell phones....
Back in the day before cell phones became widely available my friends and I as well as a larger circle of people used to communicate with a pager code. You would go to a payphone and then dial the pager number and the number you are supposed to dial for them to call you back. We would dial in a code. The first area code would be to whom the code is from 001 to 099. All zeros 000 would mean everyone who received the page or to relay the page. The next 3 digits would imply the type of message and the last 4 digits would be the area and if applicable a location. Downtown friends place would be something like 0133 For example. (I don’t fully remember the code) 020 711-0202 would be. Going to the store in east kildonan. And my friend could reply with 063 711 0000 or 1111 to acknowledge yes or no to meeting up there. We would have small notebooks with a whole series of numbers with small descriptions on what they meant. We could also send out a message to gather everyone for a house party or issue a stay away message. Before you ask, Everyone used to have quarters for laundry and going to the arcade.

"VANDALS DESECRATE JEWISH CEMETERY," Winnipeg Tribune. May 8, 1933. Page 1. ---- 70 TOMBSTONES ARE BROKEN OR TUMBLED OVER ---- Slabs Marking Resting Place of Pioneers Deliberately Smashed --- PRAYER SHAWLS STOLEN FROM NEARBY BUILDING ----- Havoc Wreaked in Children of Israel Burying Ground In Transcona Rd. --- Discovery was made today that vandals had entered the Children of Israel cemetery on the Transcona road and wrecked havoc on the graves and tombstones.
Created nearly 50 years ago, the first Jewish cemetery in the west today presented a picture of ruin and devastation. More than 70 tombstones, some of them marking the graves of Jewish pioneers who had come west in 1882, were broken or tumbled over. In the small building used to house prayer shawls and prayer books both doors and flooring had been stolen. The shawls and the books were scattered and tumbled over the bare earth.
Hammer Believed Used The damage done to the tombstones bore evidence of deliberate vandalism. Weather-beaten marble slabs marking the resting place of men and women who had passed away in the nineteenth century were broken, probably with a sledge hammer. Gravestones of hardier granite were broken off at their joints, and columns rudely thrown on to the graves themselves.
The motive and the perpetrators of the desecration of the cemetery were alike unknown today. Evidence of the breaks in the tombstones indicated that the vandals had done their work within the past two weeks. The destruction in the small building may have been a separate act by another party.
Reward Is Offered Royal Canadian Mounted Police were informed of the destruction today by William T. Tobias, former M.L.A., the graves of whose parents were among those despoiled. A brother, Norman Tobias, of Vancouver, had discovered the vandalism on a visit over the weekend. A reward for information leading to the arrest of the vandals has been offered by the cemetery board, Mr. Tobias, J. E. Black and David Vineberg.
The Children of Israel cemetery is about one-quarter of a mile north-east of the Transcona road and about a mile east of Elmwood. In recent years burial there has been rare, the Shaarey Zedek cemetery in West Kildonan succeeding it. Picture caption: Vandals entered the Children of Israel cemetery east of Elmwood and broke or tumbled over more than 70 tombstones, it was discovered today. The building used to house prayer shawls and prayer books was ransacked. R.C.M. Police began an investigation today. The view shows some of the gravestones broken by the vandals.
[AL: There was a wave of antisemitic acts like this throughout Canada in 1933, in the wake of the Nazi seizure of power in Germany. Swastika clubs, vandalism, Klan activity, and of course the infamous Christie Pits riot in August 1933 in Toronto. The victory of fascism in one country can have dire impact elsewhere in the world. There was a corresponding wave of mass protests and organizing, led by the far-left, across Canada as well, though because the Canadian state and bourgeois were far more anti-Communist than anti-fascist for much of the 1930s, these protests received more hostile coverage in the press and even police suppression]

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Thursday 14th June 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. From a clear and dry Costa del Sol, where the water of the Mediterranean Ocean kisses the shores of Spain, ..as I opened the door of the house this morning after walking Bella, under a star filled sky, the smell of rich and full flavor Colombian coffee invaded my senses, so a cup of the java in my hand, I sit pondering the news from around the world, so let me tell you about what caught my attention today…
SCOTLAND GEARS UP FOR SCORCHER OF A SUMMER AS MET OFFICE PREDICTS TEMPERATURES WILL SOAR TO 33C…. The glorious sunshine is expected to fall within the school holidays, from late June till August. Scots are gearing up for a scorcher of a summer. The country is set for its hottest summer for over a decade. The Met Office is predicting the highest temperatures for 12 years, soaring to a sizzling 33C. It's good news for families, as the glorious sunshine is expected to fall within the school holidays, from late June till August. Hotter temperatures are eight times as likely as cooler temperatures, the Met Office claims. Many parts of Scotland have been basking in glorious sunshine over the past few weeks. Scotland gears up for scorcher of a summer as Met Office predicts temperatures will soar to 33c Looking to this coming week temperatures in Glasgow and Edinburgh will push 20C. A spokesperson from The Met Office said: "Many places will see warm spells of sunshine after any early mist has cleared this week. "Some heavy showers will develop across Scotland and northern England later where it will be fairly cloudy. "Wales and the south-west will see isolated showers too."
AXE LOOMS FOR HIGHLAND STATION WITH JUST 76 PASSENGERS YEAR…. A remote Highland railway station could be the first to be closed in Scotland for more than 30 years under plans to speed up journeys on the line. Kildonan, near Helmsdale in Sutherland, has just 76 passengers a year – around one every five days – though it is served by seven trains a day. Shutting it could save up to four minutes from trips on the Inverness to Thurso/Wick route. However, the plans come months after ministers rejected a move to close Breich station in West Lothian, which has even fewer passengers. Supporters of the Far North Line said they were likely to oppose the plan to close the 144-year-old station, which has the third lowest number of passengers in Scotland. Balloch Pier on Loch Lomond was the last to close, in 1986. The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership co-ordinating body (Hitrans) said there would be an opportunity to close Kildonan when barriers are installed at an adjacent open level crossing, where trains currently have to stop to ensure the road is clear. The station is a “request” stop, so trains would still have to slow down in case there were passengers waiting to board. Partnership manager Frank Roach said: “Over 60,000 passengers a year use stations to the north of Kildonan, including Wick and Thurso. “Caithness residents have one of the slowest journeys by rail to their regional centre, Inverness, which is increasingly an important centre for education, training and health. “These passengers could have the journey time reduced through this measure. “It is a low-cost non-engineering solution to a long-standing problem. “Local residents within in the catchment are few, and trains will still stop at Kinbrace, eight miles away, and Helmsdale, 9.5 miles away.”
50 BANDS SET TO APPEAR AT LOCH LOMOND LIVE FESTIVAL…. AROUND 50 bands will take to the stage for Loch Lomond Live festival. The event, on September 22 and 23, will be the first major music festival on the loch in ten years. The festival will feature a mixture of traditional Scottish music and up-and-coming indie rock and alternative bands. There will also be local acts on the bill. Balloch band Have Mercy Las Vegas will appear. A spokesman for the festival said: “We’re delighted to announce that the festival will be at Luss Highland Games park. “It’s a fantastic location and we’ll also be announcing various transport options in due course. “Dubbed by radio legend Jim Gellatly as ‘an ideal festival band’, we’re delighted to announce local stars Have Mercy Las Vegas as our first act.” The event will promote local culture and feature entertainment, attractions and live music plus food and drink. The full line-up will be released on Monday, with tickets going on sale on June 15.
WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER CANNABIS RESIN SEIZED IN ABERDEEN…. Cannabis resin with an estimated street value of £100,000 has been seized from a property in Aberdeen. The seizure was made on Monday in the Rosemount area of the city, according to Police Scotland. Officers said a 57-year-old woman was arrested and charged in connection with the recovery. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal. Anyone with further information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
PRANKSTERS PUT BORDERS SCHOOL UP FOR SALE ON EBAY…. Pranksters have put their secondary school up for sale on eBay for a bargain price of £2,018. Sixth-year pupils at Berwickshire High School, in the Borders, were trying to flog their high school building, facilities and full use of all staff”. There were 14 bids made on the listing with the highest reaching £50,000. Buyers were offered “free collection in person” but warned the seller won’t accept returns. The listing read: “On behalf of the Berwickshire High School’s Class of 2018, we present the school building, its contents and full use of all staff for sale at a bargain price of £2,018. “The building comprises over 50 rooms, 5 bathrooms, excellent sporting facilities, luxury kitchen and a host of other amenities. “However what makes this a great buy is the staff on offer. “This full package deal comes complete with an exclusive angry headmaster, who will probably murder us when he realises we created this listing.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of the Isle of Lewis in the Scottish Islands with the Northern Lights above illuminating the heavens.
A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it's always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of "Colombian" Coffee and wish you a safe Thursday 14th June 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…
All good stuff....But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in
Be safe out there…

WINNIPEG — Winnipeggers have been lining up outside stores all weekend to shop in person for the first time in months.
This after new provincial health orders coming into effect Saturday, allowed retail stores to reopen to the public at 25 per cent capacity.
Marketing Manager for Kildonan Place, Corey Quintaine, said he was surprised to see the line-ups during the first weekend of reopening in the province. He believes people have been itching to shop in person.
“A lot of stores are now doing clearance on their holiday and winter merchandise, so the prices are really good right now,” said Quintaine. “There might be some returns from holiday gifts as well, so there’s a few factors that play into why people are excited to get back and shop.”
Quintaine said a lot people were shopping online over the holidays – and some of them are still waiting for packages to arrive.
“Now those folks can come in, pick up what they need, or do something like order online and pick up in store which is gaining in popularity as well.”
Chuck Davidson, president and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, said the influx of shoppers on reopening weekend is due in large part to pent-up demand from consumers. He said what we’re seeing right now is a spike in sales as opposed to an upward trend.
“It will level off there’s no question about that. What we should encourage Manitobans to do is be patient,” said Davidson. “We’re still at limited capacity, 25 per cent. We still want to make sure that we’re controlling the situation as well, we don’t want case counts to go up again.”
Davidson said most retailers have been closed for almost 37 per cent of the time since COVID-19 hit. He said we won’t see retail business truly rebound until capacity limits return to normal.
“I think as long as Manitobans continue to follow the rules, wear their masks – and the numbers head in the right direction, we will be able to ramp up that capacity as we move forward.”
