Are Rhode Islanders Burying Their Heads in The Sand? Or Have We Just Given Up?
That was the thought that ran around in my head today after reading a GoLocal story about yet another potential restaurant shutdown attributed to the Washington Bridge Closure. And after an appearance yesterday afternoon at Gregg's Downstairs Pub (one of my favorite, longtime haunts) it looks like that place may be next. I was the only one there.
After interviewing the bartender for awhile regarding the welfare of of some of my old friends that once frequented there, she indicated that the pace of business changed somewhat since the Covid epidemic but the bridge closure tamped things down significantly.
So I started thinking about this issue along with other issues that have cropped up lately and began to realize just how badly we're getting hosed. Now this is not an average every day, run of the mill. year after year, general hosing we are issued by the political industrial class in our state, but a hosing an steroids! Sort of like a Super Soaker attached to a firehose hosing.
Ponder this. Since the western side of the bridge was closed in December of 2023, it's still there. Day after day we ride through the skinny lanes and the Eastern half of the bridge and the broken bridge is still there. Noting going on.
Meanwhile in Baltimore, The Francis Scott Key Bridge was destroyed by a disabled cargo ship on March 26, 2024, halting all shipping in and out of the harbor, and as of yesterday, the shipping lanes have re-opened.
Place this issue against the backdrop of Rhode Island's latest proposed budget. A budget which slashes money for kids in need (DCYF), doesn't address the issues surrounding a spate of nursing home closures and doesnt motivte doctors and dentists to stay in our state due to low insurance reimbrsement rates.
Meanwhile, Citizens Bank (The Royal Bank of Scotland which left thousands of Rhode slanders in the lurch during the Great Recession) asks for (threatens) a $15 million tax rebate and the Governor and the General Assembly fall over themselves to make it happen.
Speaker Shekarchi, who I realize has a difficult job running the state was quoted as saying that, “I don’t want to be the speaker who loses Citizens Bank". But where's the same urgency for us regular folks? You know, the ones that won't go to restaurants or shopping because of the "soul crushing" traffic related to the bridge? Or the young kids in need? Or the old people running out of nursing home choices? Or people losing their doctors and dentists because of the paltry reimbursement rates? What about independent businesses trying to survive?
I feel like we're all in some nightmare akin to the old Benny's Commercial where the shopper walks down an isle looking for help calling out "Hello?" But in this case, no one answers
Unless of course you're a wealthy bank. The rest of us just get, well.......hosed.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! I wanna know about some of your worldbuilding inspirations: what did you like to read as a kid? What first inspired you to start worldbuilding? What are some of the first ideas you remember playing with?
As a kid, I mostly read the Bible and science books. I committed myself, when I was like 9, to sit down and read all of Revelation in one sitting (everyone kept talking about it but they wouldn’t teach it in Sunday School!), and while it took the better part of the day I did it. I remember at one point, in like second or third grade, getting a story book about the astrology signs from the school library and getting really upset that it wasn’t about astronomy. I had expected to read about, you know, Mars or something, but no. It was bears and crabs and hunters from cover to cover. I didn’t finish it. When I was asked to paint a picture from a favorite book in fifth grade, I painted an artist’s rendition of the surface of Pluto from one of my astronomy books while everyone else was doing, you know, Dr. Seuss or whatever. I got harassed pretty bad for that one.
As for stuff that most influenced my early worldbuilding, though, there was some fiction that had its place. I do recall enjoying the Boxcar Children, but I couldn’t tell you more than like three facts about them now. Our neighborhood barber shop had comic books in the waiting room, and I remember tearing through one Spider-Man story after another as soon as I was able. And there was this long relationship with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In among the magazines and stuff at my dentist’s office was, inexplicably, exactly one book, and it was an unabridged copy of Leagues. I started reading it when I was maybe 7 or 8, and didn’t get very far before I was called back for my appointment. So when I went back six months later, I resumed where I left off, and did this every time I went until I was about 15. I refused to get another copy of the book and read ahead, I had to keep going. I was getting faster at it each time, of course, and by the last time I was so close to the end I thought I might finish it in only one or two more visits. But then my dentist moved to a new office, and when I showed up for my appointment the book was gone. It wasn’t brought with them. I literally never went to that dentist again, I was so angry.
My first attempt at worldbuilding was a superhero story about a boy who had been experimented on and given tiger-based abilities, like seeing in the dark and stealth and stuff, and his personality borrowed a lot from what I thought pirates were like. He lived in Baltimore. I figured there were no other heroes in Baltimore, and it was important enough to have a baseball team, so why not? I knew nothing about Baltimore and instead of looking anything up I just decided to create it from scratch based entirely on Orioles promotional material that I had come across somehow. This would’ve been, goodness, third, fourth grade? His villain was a full-grown man who could extend his fingernails into claws. I think they had been part of the same experiment or something. The whole thing started because I thought someone had said “Dark Raider” when they were saying Darth Vader and on realizing the mistake I wondered what a character who could be called Dark Raider would be like.

My jaw is hurting me a bunch right now. Sinus pressure I think. Which has got me bummed. But today was an excellent day. And thats really cool.
I slept alright last night. Had weird dreams. But i woke up feeling good. It was a bit to hot again. But i felt cute in my outfit and was having a good morning.
I enjoyed my morning. Just chilled for a while. I decided to go show my sculpture to the dentist but i accidently broke off one of the roots/legs of the thing so i had to fix it. But they are still really excited about it. They kept asking me if I came up with the idea and were really nice about it. It was cool.
But because it was broke and I didn't want to carry it around with me. I didn't want it to get worse. So I biked right back home to drop it off. I glued it back together while I was there so it would be dry when I got home. And then I left.
I biked down towards the Harbour. And I went to Chipotle. I got nachos and a soda. I ended up giving half of my nachos and cheese to a homeless guy outside. I rinsed off my soda cup and gave him ice water two. I felt bad giving him a spicy food if I didn't also give him a drink. And it was way too hot outside. And he was being nice holding the door for everyone who came in and out of the store. It just felt like the right thing to do.
I went back and got the bus to work. I walked in the school at 12:30 and Tiffany was getting there too. I went to get the lunches and everyone else slowly got together while we figured out where we were supposed to meet with our kids. A whole bunch of stuff went down in the interim so we ended up leaving almost a half an hour late. I have so much more sympathy for field trips now than I ever did before. Because trying to Corral 65 kids and about 20 adults was way harder than I thought it would be. And there was a teacher who holds on to some of the kids phones during school time and she wouldn't give two of my kids the phones back because it was still daytime but we're leaving the building and won't be back until almost 7 and it was just a whole thing. And then one child was approved to go but his younger sister wasn't so then he got really upset. It all ended up being fine and we all got on the bus but was very upsetting for a few minutes. I had to reassign groups because of some drama. But everybody seemed fairly happy with who they were partnered with. We got on the bus and Chelsi sat at the very back and I sat in the middle at the end of where our kids and the next group of kids started. I had Mackenzie come and sit next to me and that was perfect. Because both of us just want to listen to wear headphones and be quiet. Everyone else sat in their groups and off we went.
It was a pretty long drive out to LOL station. About an hour. But it was a nice ride. I listen to music for a bit. A little bit of a podcast. It was nice. We got there and there was confusion about where we were supposed to go in so we drove around the parking lot for a while but it was all good we got there and got inside.
My group was really good about staying together and being with their partner. I was very proud of them. The police was inside of a mall. Which is a weirdly popular thing in Baltimore or Maryland. Having big attractions in malls. But that was cool. We got there and their condition wasn't working super well so it's a little warm but not the worst thing. I was very sweaty by the end of the day but I had a really good time. It was extra good because there was no other people there. That was excellent! Because then I don't have to worry about someone kidnapping my child. Or getting lost in a crowd. It was just us. It was great.
It was decided that Mackenzie would be my buddy for the day. Because she felt like she was a little bit too mature for all the other kids. So we went on the roller coaster together. Which was really just a small spinning one on the ground but that was great.
I don't like heights anyway.
We did the bumper cars. And we did the two obstacle courses that they had. I liked the inflatable obstacle course better than the other one which was more like a ninja challenge. Because I couldn't get up the ninja challenge wall and had to go up the easier one. I still beat Mackenzie all three times. Even when I had my sock fall off in the middle of one of the races.
I prefer the inflatable one though because it had two big slides in it and I really enjoyed that. I wish I could just have done the slide part. It was still really really fun.
We had lunch a little after 3:30. We had brought sandwiches for all the kids but most of them brought money so that they could get something else as well. I bought french fries and shared some of them with my students that didn't have money. And it was really nice. Right after lunch we were allowed to use the roller skating rink. And I have never in my life used four wheel roller skates. I only ever use the inline kind when I was a kid. So this was a new experience.
And I had a blast! I first the skates I got on where to big. I didn't realize they were men sizes. So I had to go and change and get size fours. Which put me way better. And I was able to skate forwards and backwards. I was able to do a couple small tricks that I can do with figure skating. I wasn't as good at first but by the end of the half-hour I was skating around them like crazy. I hope the couple of the kids but it's hard to explain how to push on skates and a lot of them were doing the shuffle thing and it does not work very well on four wheeled skates. So there's a lot of kids on the ground. But I'm really glad that they all got to try. It was a lot of fun. But oh my God was I sweaty.
Just overwhelmingly hot. But we were finishing up and everyone got together and threw their cups away once we all have water. And then we went to get on the bus to go home.
We were leaving after 5 so there was a lot of traffic. And that was hard on some of the kids. About half of the little kids fell asleep and three or four of mind it as well. Including Mackenzie who fell asleep on me which was absolutely precious. I just lay there and listen to my podcast and enjoyed the ride.
We got back to the school at 6:30. And all of my kids got picked up and it was time to go home. Miss Elaine and Marcus give me a ride home. My bike was still at streets though so once they drop me off I walked home for a second and then walk down to get my bike and then came home. I made dinner and worked on fixing the tooth sculpture. I took a shower. Washed my hair again because I was so sweaty. And now I'm laying in bed. I'm going to go to sleep soon probably. I want to watch scary videos even though they always freaked me out. And then tomorrow I get to see James. We're going to celebrate our one-year anniversary and I'm very much looking forward to it. We have a full day planned. We're going to be disgusting and romantic and it's going to be great.
Sleep well everyone. Be safe out there.

MERCEDES ARI JONES ☆ TWENTY-FIVE☆ LEAD SINGER
Also Known As: Mercedes
Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland
Gender: Cisfemale
Sexuality: Bisexual
DOB: December 24th
Job on Tour: Lead singer of Divine Destiny
Voiceclaim: Beyonce
A LITTLE ABOUT...
Born to Percy and Julianne Jones, Mercedes had known she had wanted to be a singer since she was a young child. Her father (Top Ranking Dentist) and Mother (Stay at home mom) wanted nothing but the best for their children so they pushed their kids towards their dreams.
Mercedes Jones has spent the better part of the last 12 years singing and performing. Her career started at 14 when she and her friends convinced their parents to drive them to Los Angeles for a music competition and they won. They named themselves “3 Major” an all girl group and for Four years they were a small success touring and performing locally around LA and surrounding towns. While they were good, Mercedes wanted to be apart of something great.
Mercedes became the Lead singer of all girl group Divine Destiny with Cordella Records, at 20, making a name for herself as a force to be reckoned with and a voice that was unrivalled at the moment. She was 21 when they did their first US Tour with the group, which was sold out within days and her first Nationally broadcast Album soared to the top of the charts winning the group their first three Grammys.
Spending majority of her time focusing on her career, the group became one of the biggest names in the industry, winning accolades and awards, Mercedes was also an avid giver, donating not only her money but her time to various charities. Being in the public eye and working on her music, left little time for a relationships that were more than friendships.
Mercedes is what you would consider a good girl, she never took drugs or ran around getting drunk, she was never in the news or tabloids for things unsavory, she takes her reputation very seriously. She has never been in love, she has had crushes and people have crushed on her but she has never felt that kind of love her parents have or even some of her friends in the industry. Her career hasn’t always had ups, because Mercedes is giving, always trying to help those in need, sometimes even if they don’t ask for it, it has opened the door for some people to take advantage of her. In her career Mercedes has had two stalkers, one who is currently in custody, he was sentenced to 4 years for breaking and entering when he broke into her home while she was sleep. The other still sends her letters from time to time, but she never reads them.
Mercedes is a very down to earth and fun loving woman, she is hardworking, determined and loyal. But she can also be stubborn and sarcastic with Sass mixed in the middle. Her style changed a lot from when she first started out. While she loves performing and dressing up, when she is at home you can find her in jeans/yoga pants and a tshirt Mercedes always has her hair done, her long locks are always seen either down and free or in a messy bun. Her makeup is natural and subtle and the girl has curves for days.
There has been some talk and many rumors about Mercedes wanting to leave DD and start her own solo career, but she has neither confirmed or denied that fact.

And this is a major part of the problem. Recently I uncovered someone saying that “The communities with the least amount of crime, are not the communities with the most police. They are the communities with the most resources.” And this is infinitely true.
It’s all about resources and resource allocation. it’s interesting to see affluent white people in Baltimore complain that poor black kids are coming into their neighborhoods to rob and steal. The usual comment is “nowhere in this neighborhood is committing crimes; why can’t they just stay where they are?” or something like that. Well, think about it. No one in this neighborhood is impoverished, so who’s tempted to commit a crime? No one. We have grocery stores and a million little bars and restaurants, a first-class inner city park, access to major highways and public transportation. Hell, you can walk anywhere, even to your doctor or dentist office. It’s all a few minutes away.
Where this kids committing robberies are coming from, what do they have? Nothing. They don’t even have grocery stores in a lot of these neighborhoods. The schools are completely run down. The bus is the only way to reliably get around, and they don’t have the money to come hang out with the rich kids or travel around...on the bus. What investment do they get? More police. Can’t get groceries, but there’s a cop on every corner.
And it’s not just a local problem. It’s everywhere. And it’s expanded, as we see above. Doctors and nurses can’t even be equipped to handle a pandemic, but the police have riot gear and APCs. Teachers have to buy all their own school supplied because schools are strapped, and the police have all the latest equipment. All of this needs to be addressed, and it comes down to investing in what you want to succeed.
(I also believe that we don’t support the police the way they need it - more time of, more time to connect with the communities they serve, psychological support for the police, for victims, etc., forensics [how about all those unprocessed rape kits everywhere?], and not enough justice system support for those incarcerated [whole other issue].)

Halloween has never been a favorite "holiday" of mine. The candy and all was fine (what we were allowed to keep) but aside from that it was stressful. As a kid I always wanted to be something whimisical and pretty but that never seemed to align with my mom's "creative vision" for my costume. I'm pretty sure this is the only halloween photo my family has and it's from the year I said "princess" and instead I got a homemade witch costume with a belt made from some scratchy jute rope. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to outgrow trick or treating! Most memorable trick or treating item = the annual alligator toothbrush from the dentist who lived down the block from us in Baltimore Best Halloween memory = going to the Halloween parade in New York City and spotting Michael McDonald. I shouted out " hey Michael" and he turned around and smiled. This was probably one of the first #celebsightings I had while living in New York. #My50Pennies https://www.instagram.com/p/CHBCYXLJv9x/?igshid=1mdv9igxp3o0v

msr headcanon: Scully takes Mulder to her high school reunion pretending he's her husband bc she's embarrassed that she's one of the only people of her class that isn't already married
Reunitedby mldrgrlRated PGSummary: This isn’t totally what you wanted, Anon, I’m sorry, but it’s the only way I can see it.
From time to time, mail still arrived at the house for Scully. Technically, it arrived at the PO Box Mulder maintained where they used to collect their mail, but it had been his alone for two years. At first, he used the trickle of mail that came through to call her, knowing full well it was mostly junk she’d never want, but it was the only legitimate excuse he had for awhile. It had been quite awhile since her name showed up in his PO Box, but he didn’t need excuses anymore since he saw her nearly every day at work.
He brought her the Alumni Newsletter she received with a cup of coffee. She thanked him for both, took a sip of the coffee, and then through the newsletter in the trash after a mere glance.
“You're not going to read it?” Mulder asked, retrieving the sealed booklet from the trash can.
“A high school newsletter? I don't think I've ever read one.”
“Hm.” Mulder ripped the circle of tape holding the pages together and opened it up. “Rosalee O’Brien hyphen Bingham, senior class president, announces the 35th reunion for the graduates of the class-”
“I know what year I graduated,” she said, reaching across his desk to take the newsletter back. “No need to remind me.”
“You don't want to go? It's in…” Mulder paused and held the newsletter up and away from Scully's searching fingers. “June.”
“We don't know where we'll be in June. A case could come up.”
“Never heard of personal time?”
Unable to grab the newsletter, Scully crossed her arms. “Mulder, you wouldn't know personal time if it walked through the door and bit you on the ass.”
“Well, things change.” He gave her the newsletter which she folded and put in her briefcase.
Scully sat down with her coffee in front of Mulder's desk. “What's on the agenda today?”
“I think we should go.”
“We?”
“We haven't been to a reunion since Kroner, Kansas.”
“You say that like it's the same as going to a movie.”
“What kind of movie?”
Scully rolled her eyes a little and reached over to take the file off Mulder's desk since he didn't seem to want to share it with her. The conversation about the reunion fell by the wayside as he finally started presenting her with the known and unknown information on their new case.
Two months later, Scully was packing up her briefcase for the night when Mulder swiveled in his seat and leaned back to look at her.
“What time should I pick you up?” he asked.
“For?”
“The reunion’s tomorrow.”
“The what?”
“Your high school reunion.”
“How in the hell did you even remember that?”
“It's been on my calendar for weeks. You didn't mark it down?”
Scully snapped her briefcase shut and gave him the eyebrow. “I never RSVPed,” she said.
“Sure you did.”
“Mulder…”
“Did you know that Rosalee O’Brien hyphen Bingham is married to a dentist? Two kids, Paul Jr. and Mary Katherine, after her mother, but they call her Kate. Paul Jr. just joined the practice with his dad and Kate's finding herself in Europe. Nice lady. Can't wait to see you.”
Scully dropped into the chair across from Mulder's desk and glared at him. “I can't believe you would...you would just…”
“It'll be fun.”
“I highly doubt that.”
Mulder pursed his lips and then sat up straight and smoothed his tie down his chest. “Remember back when we were on the road and we used to...talk?”
“Yes.”
“You said once that you thought it was so strange to look back at your life and know that anyone who ever knew you before you went on the run with me was never going to know you again.”
“And you thought that meant I wanted to then go to my high school reunion ten years later?”
Mulder looked down at his desk and gave a small shrug. “I can call Rosalee and tell her something came up.”
“No,” Scully said, quickly. “No, don't do that.”
“But, you don't want to go.”
“No. No, I would rather stay home and think about ways to kill you and make it look like an accident.”
Mulder grimaced. “I thought you liked high school.”
“I did. For the most part.”
“So why don't you want to go?”
“I don't know.”
They had reached a stalemate of sorts. Mulder knew when not to pry, and Scully really couldn't offer more of an explanation.
“What time is this happening and where?” Scully asked.
“Downtown Baltimore, 7 o’ clock.”
“And you really want to go to this?”
“I do.”
“Why?”
“It's not often I get to meet people who knew you before you were my Scully,” he said, and then quickly added, “the Scully I know.”
Scully licked the sloped her upper lip and looked away from Mulder. “Alright,” she said, standing and picking up her briefcase. “Pick me up at 6:30.”
“Okay.”
Their first exchange with a former classmate, Tracy Llewllyn nee Parker, was a shining example of what Scully couldn’t explain to Mulder as a reason for not wanting to attend her reunion. Tracy was manning the nametags outside the door of the hotel ballroom the reunion was being held in. Scully tried to dredge up some sort of memory of the woman, but her mind was a blank.
“Dana Scully,” Tracy said, handing her a badge with Scully’s name and a smaller, black and white version of her senior photo underneath. “I remember you.”
“You do?” Scully asked.
“We had chemistry together. Andy Teller almost got expelled for cheating off your mid-term.”
That was not a memory Scully was particularly fond of, especially when she’d had to reject Andy’s claim that she’d allowed him to copy from her paper. She forced a weak smile as she affixed her nametag to her blazer.
“You must be Dana’s husband,” Tracy said to Mulder, handing him a blank tag and a Sharpie. “Just write your name down there.”
“He’s my partner,” Scully clarified.
“Oh, of course you’d be one of those modern girls,” Tracy said with a laugh. “It’s a wonder you even got married. I don’t think anyone would’ve expected that of you.”
“Why is that?” Scully asked, barely keeping the annoyance out of her voice.
“You were always so independent,” Tracy answered, somewhat hushed, as though it was a secret. “So what do you do now?”
“Scully’s a surgeon,” Mulder interjected, dropping the Sharpie back on the table in front of Tracy.
“A surgeon!”
“Well,” Scully said. “Actually-”
“Did you just call her Scully?” Tracy asked.
“Force of habit,” Mulder answered, taking a moment to affix his name badge. “We work together.”
“Oh, are you a surgeon as well...Mulder?”
“FBI.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I’m a forensic pathologist,” Scully said. “For the FBI.”
“You still work now that you’re married?”
“You know,” Mulder said, putting his arm around Scully’s waist. “Nice meeting you Tracy, but I think there’s a few people who just walked in the door that need nametags and we don’t want to keep you from it.”
Scully had felt the anger rising in her chest, bringing heat to her cheeks. If Mulder hadn’t pulled her away when he did, Tracy was about to be on the bad end of a verbal lashing. She didn’t have to remember the woman specifically to know she was probably going to encounter a lot of women like her in that ballroom. She’d gone to school with a lot of girls whose singular ambition was to find a Catholic husband, get married in the church, and produce a lot of Catholic babies. That wasn’t on Scully’s agenda, and it probably wouldn’t have been so strange if she’d been in high school today, but of the eighty or some odd kids she graduated with, she knew only a small percentage of them even went on to college, male or female.
“Why did you tell Tracy I was a surgeon?” Scully asked Mulder as they entered the ballroom.
“You are,” he said.
“Not anymore. And I wasn’t ever really...I mean, I have performed surgeries, but…”
“What do you want to be tonight, then? Doctor? Special Agent? Nuclear physicist? Oh, I bet you could pass for some kind of lawyer if you wanted to.”
“FBI is fine. And why did you let Tracy think you were my husband?”
“You’re the one that did that.”
“No, I didn’t, I told her you were my partner.”
“Scully, it’s synonymous to a lady like her.”
Scully sighed.
The ballroom was tastefully decorated with round tables with white linen tablecloths. A buffet was on one side of the room and a DJ was at the head, playing music that was popular in her senior year that he’d probably had to Google because he barely looked old enough to drink. The current choice was Pete Townshend’s Let My Love Open the Door and a handful of people were dancing in the center floor.
“Unbelievable,” Scully murmured.
“What?” Mulder asked.
Scully nodded slightly to the left. “The woman at that table was my junior year trigonometry teacher.”
“That woman has to be a hundred years old,” he whispered back to Scully. “Are you sure?”
“She looks exactly the same, even without the wimple and habit.”
“Your trig teacher was a hundred year old nun?”
“Shhh…” Scully chuckled slightly and gave Mulder a mild backwards slap on the shoulder with her knuckles.
“Recognize anyone else?”
“I don’t think so.”
“I’m dying to know what Dana Scully’s high school crush looks like now, so be sure to point him out when you see him.”
“My high school crush didn’t go to my school. He went to Missy’s.”
“You and Melissa didn’t go to the same school?”
“Missy refused to go to Catholic school past eighth grade. She told our parents if they sent her anywhere but public school, she’d not only find a way to get expelled, she’d get excommunicated.”
Mulder laughed and Scully smiled at the memory of her sister threatening their parents with enough vehemence that instead of punishment, she actually got what she wanted. Bill had been so annoyed that their sister wasn’t obeying the natural law of things, but Bill’s rigidity meant he was always annoyed at something.
Scully wandered the room with Mulder at her side. In one corner someone had set up a table with a yearbook, a posterboard of old photos and a few class papers to peruse. Mulder went for the newspaper while Scully inspected the photos. Seeing the faces of her classmates jogged her memory a bit and she was able to pick out a few by name.
“Looks like your basketball team wasn’t all that bad,” Mulder said.
“Don’t remember. Don’t think I ever went to a game, actually.”
“Chicken fingers will no longer be available in the cafeteria on Tuesdays, only Thursdays. Harsh.”
“But, always fish sticks on Fridays.”
“Hey, Scully, you’re in here.” Mulder opened the paper for her and she leaned closer. “Senior debate team wins city finals. There’s a picture.”
“That’s as far as we got. We lost in regionals.”
“Bummer. Left to right, Lisa Cunningham, Michael Smith, Dana Scully, Holly Campbell, and Rick Flanagan.”
“I wonder if Lisa will be here. I’d be curious to know what she’s been up to.”
“No love for the other three?”
“Lisa was the most ambitious.”
“Not you?”
“Next to me.” She smiled at him and he closed the paper.
They picked up some hors d'oeuvres from the buffet and sat down at an empty table for awhile. A few people came up to chat, but it was clear they really didn’t know each other aside from a few shared teachers they could remember. Mulder did finally get to meet Rosalee and her husband Paul, and they chatted like old friends for a bit, but Rosalee couldn’t sit down, she had people to greet.
At some point, the lights in the room dimmed just a little and more people began to gather at the dance floor. Scully began to wonder when she might be able to convince Mulder it was time to leave when he suddenly stood up and offered her his hand. She looked up at him, puzzled.
“Dance with me,” he said.
“Now?”
“No, at your fortieth reunion. Come on, Scully. Get up and dance with me.”
Scully took Mulder’s hand and he led her towards the dance floor. Endless Love was playing. She shook her head a little at him as he folded his hand over hers and put his other one at her hip. She rested her arm over his so that her other hand lay on the back of his shoulder and they swayed casually, but she felt a little ridiculous. He was dancing with her like they were in junior high and had never danced before.
“What are you doing?” she asked him.
“Leaving room for the holy ghost.”
Scully chuckled and stepped closer to him. He immediately wrapped his arm around her and pulled her up to his chest. Their joined hands came to rest near her chin. It was both familiar and comfortable.
“It’s been awhile since you’ve danced with me,” Mulder said.
“It’s been awhile since you’ve asked.”
“Maybe I thought you’d turn me down.”
Scully didn’t respond, and for a few moments, she just closed her eyes and swayed with him. He let go of her hand and brought his other arm down around her waist, crossing his wrists at the small of her back. She hooked her arms under his and splayed her hands against the back of his shoulders. He nuzzled her hair and she ran her hands up and down his back, but suddenly his posture changed a little and she looked up at him.
“Three o’clock,” Mulder said, without even looking at her. “I think that’s...I think that’s Rick, from your debate team.”
Scully glanced over to where Mulder indicated and her brows lifted into tiny peaks. “I think you’re right,” she said.
“Want to say hello?”
“I do, actually.”
Mulder loosened his hold on her and Scully backed out of his embrace, but she took his hand and led him from the dance floor. Rick stood off to the side sipping punch. He looked like he was trying to remain inconspicuous, but with his clergy collar, he stood out.
“Rick Flanagan?” Scully asked. “Or, should I say, Father Flanagan?”
Rick smiled and lowered the plastic cup in his hand. “Dana Scully,” he said. “What would you like to argue about today?”
Scully returned his smile and Mulder chuckled.
“This is my...this is Mulder,” Scully said.
Mulder and Rick shook hands.
“You don’t have to guess what I’ve gone on to do with my life,” Rick said. “Tell me what you’ve been up to.”
“FBI,” Scully said.
“Ah, I would’ve guessed lawyer. Never met anyone who loved an argument as much as you.”
“That hasn’t changed,” Mulder said.
“Don’t think I won’t shoot you in front of a priest, Mulder.”
“She’s just kidding, she left her weapon at home.”
“How’s your mother, Dana?” Rick asked. “I just remembered those days we would study at your house and your mom would put out the most delicious cookies I’d ever had.”
Scully hesitated a moment. “She passed a few months ago, I’m afraid.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I’ll say a prayer for her soul.”
“I appreciate that, thank you.”
They talked for a few more minutes and then Mulder excused himself to use the restroom. A few minutes after that, Scully excused herself as well and went to wait for Mulder in the lobby. When he came back, she took his hand and steered him to the door.
“We’re leaving?” he asked.
“I only have so much social engagement in me,” she said. “Let’s walk for a bit though, before we get the car. It’s a nice night.”
“Sure.”
They walked hand in hand down the Baltimore streets. Scully pointed a few places out to Mulder that she used to frequent in high school, or where those places used to be. They circled back after awhile and Mulder gave the ticket to the valet to get their car. As they waited, Scully put her arms around Mulder and rested her chin on his chest.
“Thank you,” she said.
“For what?” he asked.
“Making me come.”.
A mischievous grin spread across his face. “No need to thank me,” he said. “I always loved making yo-”
Scully reached up and put a hand over his mouth before he could finish the thought. She shook her head at him and fought a smile. He kissed the center of her palm and she took her hand away.
“It was actually really nice just to be out with you,” she said.
“We could do it more often, you know.”
“I’d like that, Mulder. I’d like it a lot.”
“I would too.”
Scully smiled and then turned her head and rested her cheek against his chest as they waited for the car.

I don't feel so good. I don't know what hit me all of a sudden but I just feel bad. My jaw started hurting really bad and I started crying and so I took some medicine and the pain is going away but I just feel sick. I think I'm going to have to go eat something. Not fun.
I really prefer James last night. And today. But he was just so sad. I understand why he's hurting so bad about losing something so important to him. Thankfully he does have a second bike but it's not the bike he's had since high school. It's not his favorite thing. And the other bike has to be fixed and that's going to cost him almost $100. We're having terrible bike luck lately. And I hate seeing how much pain he was in.
We slept okay. I think he was just emotionally exhausted and passed out. I slept okay because of the air conditioning. And we woke up around 8. Had a slow morning. James stretched and took a shower. I got dressed and played on my phone. And we left a little bit after he ate a muffin.
We walk to the pet food store and got Sweet Pea stuff. Cat food. And then we walked back to my apartment. James talked to his friend on the phone. And we got back to my place. On the way back in the alley we found two really nice bar stools. So we carried them back to store for when we move. Hopefully we'll have a bar or counter we can use them with because they're really nice.
Our plans were kind of changed because we are originally going to go for a bike ride. Couldn't do that because James is other bike is broken and the bike store wasn't open on Memorial Day. So instead we walked to the bus and went to Patterson Park. It was a nice day out. And I didn't want to waste it.
I felt very anxious about lots of things today. But it was nice being with James. We took the bus and we got up there and my jaw was hurting all of a sudden. So we walked along the edge of the park and went to the Rite Aid. Got some extra sunscreen and aspirin headed back.
And we walked around the pond. Tried to balance a Furby on a lily pad. She only got a little damp. I liked touching the water. And seeing all the fuzzy milkweed looking stuff flying in the air. It's nice just being outside with my boyfriend.
We did that for a while looked at the community pool and found out the prices. When we walked up to the main street to find lunch. Pizza place where we're going to go was closed for the holiday so we went to the cheap pizza place down the street. Which was fine but used a little bit too much cheese. And then we had a back and forth about carrying the leftovers. Because I wanted to put it in tin foil and put it in my backpack. But James want to carry a box and for some reason that stress me out real bad. I don't know why the idea of having that box made me so on edge but it really did. Even if I wasn't carrying it. But James got his way and we went back out.
We went to the thrift store that's on the Main Street that I passed on the bus yesterday. Didn't buy anything but it was fun looking around. And then we went back to the park to see the pagoda.
The Pagoda is funny. It's very pretty and it's a landmark but James didn't really know the history of it. There's no real sign. And so we looked it up and it turns out it was originally called The Observatory. And you can see a lot of different parts of Baltimore from it. Back when everything was shorter. And it was really interesting to see that there really isn't any point to it. It's just pretty. And it was made just to be pretty. They almost demolished it in the 50s but they were stored it in the late 90s. That's cool. It's a really nice building.
We sat in front of it for a little while and then we walked up to go to Rita's. I got water ice. My first water ice of the season. James. Peach and I got Cherry. Poured most of it into my water bottle to save for later and then we went to wait for the bus to go home.
Again I was anxious about the bus but it came. And then we took that and transfer to the free bus to go back to my apartment. I loaded up the cart for James to bring back home with him in our slow move. Just a couple things that fit and I didn't need in my day-to-day life. And then we said goodbye.
I think that's been the hardest thing about packing because I'm still living in this apartment that it's hard to decide what I can give up on the day-to-day stuff. I took down all the art from all the rooms except for my bedroom. And I took a lot of books and put them in suitcases. Still got a lot of books that didn't fit but it's something.
We're making progress though. I think a bunch of my trucks are going to be going half to his parents house and half to his apartment in the coming weeks. I finished packing the one trunk with all of my nick-nacks. Not all all but a good amount of them. Pretty much everything from the bookshelf. And I do have one empty trunk back in my closet then I'm going to be able to use. But I'm trying to use as few cardboard boxes as possible since I have so many containers. And suitcases. And trunks. But it's progress.
I was frustrated with myself because I had just had four days off and I don't feel very rested. Honestly feel stressed out still. I do feel better than I did last week but I just wish I had more time to do nothing. Not that that will make you feel better but I need to finish my lesson plans and I need to finish that to sculpture for the dentist for our trade and I just couldn't get myself to do it. This week I will do that. Tomorrow is the kids art show so I'm not getting home till late but I plan on working on that shoe sculpture and finishing it before Friday. And I'm going to finish my lesson plans on Wednesday on Thursday morning. I want all that done before the end of the week. I'm giving myself a hard deadline. I have to get my act together. Never honestly just been a little overwhelmed by life and everything but the school Year's almost over.
Actually the Saturday is me and James this one year anniversary. We decided that we're going to celebrate on Friday when we both have the day off. And I'm really looking forward to it. Can't believe it's been a year though. Here's to many more.
I'm going to start getting ready for bed now. I have a long day tomorrow. Museum school kids art show sculpture time it's going to be a long day. But I hope it's a good day. And I don't get rained on too much.
I hope you all feel good out there. Sleep well. Good night

A DEMI LOVATO LOOKALIKE WAS STROLLING DOWN BROADWAY STREET IN HER LOUBOUTIN’S. RAIN LEON JUST HAD A BIRTHDAY BASH FOR HER TWENTY THIRD BIRTHDAY. SHE HAS BEEN LIVING IN NEW YORK CITY FOR 6 YEARS. I HEAR SHE TENDS TO BE IMPULSIVE AT PARTIES, BUT ALSO KIND OF ATTENTIVE. ( FEMALE & SHE/HER )
and I am MO, which rhymes with progressive flo lol.
i havent played demi since circa 2013? she used to be my main fc until all the gigis and bellas came around and no one wanted demi lol. so happy to being playing her as an fc. I’m entirely up demi’s ass, demi and zayn’s, i stan no one else as bad as them. little bit about me i guess?????
birth name: Reina Anastasia DeLeon
current name: Rain Leon
age: twenty three
place of birth: Maryland, Baltimore
ethnicity: Mexican American
nationality: American
sexual orientation: bisexual
TRIGGER WARNINGS: ALCOHOL, DRUGS, SEXUAL HARASSMENT/ASSAULT, MENTAL HEALTH,
Rain was born to father Angel DeLeon, who was a famous singer in Mexico, and gained American recognition not long after proving his popularity of blending Hispanic and American sounds. Her mother was Teresa Price, a plain old dentist in Maryland, she didn’t do much besides that, but one of her clients was celine dion, so that’s how she ended up getting big name clientele. Rain’s parents met when her dad was getting his teeth cleaned by her mom, romantic i know lol.
Rain shares the middle child spot with her sister, in a family of 4 with an older and younger brother. Growing up she’s known nothing but the music industry. Her dad was a good performer, singer, and all that but in her family it was the girl’s who had the voice stronger than the men. Usually father’s would be hyped when a boy is born, but in Rain’s family, when a girl was born, there was a huge fucking party.
While her dad saw his daughters as growing stars, her mom was the type to be half a mom, and half of a working woman, needless to say Rain didn’t really grow around parents. Her dad was her manager, and her mom was there part time as her practice got bigger.
Even if her family was a little weird, Rain still grew up in a hispanic household. Her dad was a crazy manager, but he still believed in family, and rain’s grandparents lived with them, passing on hispanic values, language and culture over to rain and her siblings.
Rain was a child star, forced to follow in her dad’s footsteps, growing their name in Mexico with her brother on guitar, her sister with the lead vocals, Rain in the background and the rest of the band. Rain was never effected since she wasn’t the one in the spotlight, yet a lot of people were interested in her because her vocals sounded a lot stronger in the songs, causing her sister to resent her. Her brother was chill, he didn’t care.
Growing older, their family band disbanded when Rain was around 11, her sister wanting to try going solo in America when the band just reached a little bit of fame.
Rain was okay, she grew up semi normal, staying away from the spotlight but because of her sister’s influence, she attended a lot of parties, but didn’t drink until 14, smoking, all that fun stuff.
It took over her life and what made matters worse, at 13, she started her own career -- actually her dad started it for her and without really doing much, she became more popular than her sister and it was just a mess in that house. Her family feud was always in the media. A year later, she legally changed her name to be shorter, and more integrated for people to remember easily. She was annoyed how people pronounced reina wrong tbh lol
At 16, Rain was always high without anyone really knowing and it was because of all the stress she was going through in her family. Ofc this led to mental health issues, and wow it was a crazy time. Around this time also, one of her producers took advantage of her and that just... didn’t help tbh. It wasn’t rape, but more like sexual assault/harassment of sorts.
At 19, surprise (sorta?) she got pregnant by a guy she continues to keep unnamed. Rain became that artist that released music but stayed behind the scenes, raising her kid, and no one really knew about her kid until her kid was like ... 2 lol
tbh i got a lot of muse for rain off Selena Quintanilla, but adding my own stuff to this :)
Rain is a strong advocate for being able to be yourself when growing up she had to suppress a lot of who she was.
No one really knows she has mental health issues or abuses drugs and alcohol at times. She’s not at that point in her life, she continues to use and abuse when she has a night or week to herself away from her kid.
Rain’s comeback single is Lionheart.
She continues to have a rocky relationship with her family since she really only talks to her brothers and grandparents.
She symbolizes herself a lot as a lion, her last name is the spanish word for lion. Rain does her best to help these animals in the wild to keep them from being endangered, donating and visiting the countries where they live. Absolutely hates zoos. She sees them as these strong, powerful animals and likes to symbolize herself that way after everything she’s been to, there is a male, but it’s the lionesses that really do all the work in the pride.
She’s not afraid to say what’s on her mind and she hates people who are like.... too nice to be true, it’s weird to her.
Currently, she’s in the works of creating an album.
connections?
i could go for anything tbh but i’d like some
familial connections, cousins, half siblings, uncle, aunt, etc.
