Deshies do not realize how much of their language is inspired and borrowed from the Faarsi or Persian language. While researching some food and exploring their etymology, I noticed that a significant portion of our culinary culture, including the names of dishes, has been adapted from Persian traditions. Now, how did the transfer of culture happen between Bengalis and Persians, you may wonder, as your eyebrows kiss in curiosity like mine? It is due to centuries of cultural exchanges, particularly during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal periods, when Persian was the court language. (I wish I was born back then bhai. Oh how I wish!) So back then the lingua franca was Persian, which now in the 21st century is English. Yeah, what a downgrade, right? Culture of the world took a nosedive and is still on its way to the pit. (Yes, I remember I am a lit major. I am also an idiot, so cest la vie)
Anyways, let's talk about food now, my favorite topic whenever I’m not moping about life and writing about my misery. (cringe, I know.) We often think খিচুড়ি is OWNED by the Bangalies but guess what me lovies, thou art mistaken. Khichuri comes from the Persian word khichri, which means a mixture of lentils and rice. Yep.
Even পোলাও is not ours. It derives from the Persian word pulao or pilaf. বিরিয়ানি too, mhm. Comes from birinj (rice) and biryan (fried or roasted) Borhani has roots in the persian word borani. We basically owe it to them. Everyone's favorite iconic বিয়ের খাবার owes its existence to Persian influences. Even the কাচ্চি বিরিয়ানি isn't ours frans. We take so much pride in our কাচ্চি but it comes from the Mughal kitchens. কাচ্চি comes from the Bengali and Hindi word kaccha or কাঁচা. The name itself mentions the process of the cooking, how cool is that?
রুটি, which most of you know already roots from rot or roht meaning bread. কাবাব, কোর্মা, রেজালা (reza), ফিরনি, হালুয়া (halva), শরবত (sharbat) and জাফরান, ফালুদা (faloodeh), কোফতা (kufta) are directly hijacked words. The word দোপেয়াজা is interesting though. Comes from do (two) and pyaz (onion), indicating a dish cooked with onions added in two stages. AMAZING RIGHT?
When you invite your mehmaan and give them mezbaan in the dostorkhanas, do you realize these words are direct persian imports? I didnt. Now we both know.
My favorite one in the lot has to be kishmish. When I was a wee one I loved how it sounded. It felt ticklish to say or hear it. My cousins would chase me around, teasing me by saying chashmish (I always wore glasses) kishmish, knowing it would make me giggle every time. I wonder why it’s called kishmish and how the name came about. I read that many Persian food-related words have roots in descriptive terms or onomatopoeia that reflect an item’s texture, appearance, or even use. Isn't that fascinating? It is to me.
Anyways, I'm done rambling about food and the Persian language, but before I take my leave, chai anyone?

Kali Puja Preparations: A Simple Guide 🌙
As we approach Kali Puja on October 31, 2024, the atmosphere is filled with excitement and devotion. This auspicious festival, dedicated to Goddess Kali, marks the victory of good over evil and is celebrated with fervor, especially in West Bengal. Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare for this vibrant celebration:
1. Cleaning and Decoration: Begin by thoroughly cleaning your home and the puja space. Decorate with traditional motifs, marigold flowers, and colorful rangoli designs. The ambiance should be inviting and festive!
2. Gathering Offerings: Prepare a list of offerings to present to the Goddess. This typically includes fresh fruits, sweets like narkel naru (coconut balls), and traditional dishes such as khichuri. Don’t forget to include red hibiscus flowers, which are particularly favored by Goddess Kali.
3. Creating the Idol Space: Set up a dedicated space for the idol of Goddess Kali. You can either bring home a beautifully crafted idol or create one with clay. Adorn the idol with a red or black sari and jewelry, adding a personal touch.
4. Puja Essentials: Collect all necessary puja items, including incense sticks, diyas (oil lamps), and a bell. Ensure you have the panchamrit (a mix of five ingredients) ready for the rituals.
5. Community Involvement: Kali Puja is also about community. Consider inviting friends and family to join in the festivities. Group prayers and celebrations amplify the spirit of togetherness.
6. Plan the Evening: Kali Puja is traditionally observed at night. Plan a sumptuous meal for your guests, and don’t forget to include a special sweet treat to celebrate the occasion!
As we honor Goddess Kali and seek her blessings for strength and courage, let’s embrace the spirit of this beautiful festival. May your preparations be joyful, and may the Goddess illuminate your life with her divine energy! 🌺
Happy Kali Puja in advance!

you know what kolkata monsoons remind me of? they remind me of water stained window panes and yellow taxis, bright against the black night sky. they remind me of the bhar er chaa and the warm kochuri on a rainy morning, the urgency of college street to get the books under wraps and the dull grey clouds looming over the hooghly bridge near princep ghat. they remind me of the collective groans of college and school students on their inability to skip school or college and paper boats floating in clogged streets. kolkata monsoons steal your heart.
i close my eyes and all i see are the blurred windows of the taxi which open a portal to the chaotic world outside. the yellow lights, the wet roads shining in the headlights of the ongoing traffic, and the lingering sound of rabindra sangeet in the distance from some old radio.
kolkata monsoons remind me of home. of the whiff of khichuri from the kitchen when i wake up, of helping the neighbor's kid with making his paper boats and of the countless times i have sought protection under a random shop with the man i was head over heels for because we lost the track of time. who says kolkata monsoons aren't romantic?
kolkata monsoons remind me of everything i have left behind, my family, my friends, the man i have shared an umbrella with in the rain multiple times. they remind me of the time i was the happiest i had ever been. i wonder how different life would've been if i had stayed there, under the rain, staring into the eyes of the one who made the cold after the rain worth it. would i have been happier?
