Joe Keery’s career is an example of originality, from his breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed series “Stranger Things” to his music releases. Introduction: Joe Keery Joe Keery, the second of five siblings, was born on April 24, 1992 in the Massachusetts town of Newburyport. In Aaron Sorkin’s 2017 crime drama “Molly Game,” Keery had the opportunity to work with Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Michael Cera, Brian d’Arcy James and Chris O’Dowd. Keery played the part of Cole who was incredibly efficient. A Breakthrough Role in “Stranger Things” The turning point in Keery’s career occurred when he was cast as Steve Harrington in the acclaimed Netflix series “Stranger Things.” He was originally going to try out for a different part but his portrayal of Steve Harrington won over audiences everywhere. The Moon Landing
Ok, the 50th anniversary of the moon landing is in a couple days, so lemme learn you a thing.
This
Tumblr media
is a classic of Australian cinema. It’s about the satellite dish just outside Parkes, NSW, and the role it played in broadcasting a seminal moment in human history.
It’s about these three Aussie blokes, also the American they sent across to ‘liase’ or whatever.
Tumblr media
Why yes, that is Sam Neil and Patrick Warburton, well spotted. Also Kevin Harrington and Tom Long, but probably non-Aussies don’t know about those two. Yet. They play, respectively:  - The kind-hearted father figure who wears knitted cardigans, smokes a pipe, and whose job seems to be to deliver soft-spoken inspirational speeches and just basically be The Dad  - The interloping American who’s there to make sure these bozos can actually get the job done  - The engineer who speaks mostly in Aussie slang and resents the implications of needing (American) oversight  - The anxious math nerd whose primary job is to translate the engineer’s slang for the American
It’s also about the townspeople of Parkes, who include:  - A kinda dumb but well-meaning mayor  - An incredibly sweet local girl who has a massive crush on the equally sweet math nerd and can’t drive  - A feminist teenager who’s portrayed as being a shrill buzzkill and it’s a really disappointing aspect of this otherwise brilliant film  - A 10-year-old boy who is Obsessed to the point where most of the science exposition lines go to him  - A slightly-too-honest assistant to the mayor that keeps saying the quiet part loud  - A security guard who is Very Enthusiastic about his job (but please don’t tell his mum he carries a gun)  - Just generally people who are Quite Earnest but a little dim
The plot is about how, as a result of NASA needing backup from southern hemisphere satellites to track the spacecraft, suddenly there’s a lot of attention and bigwigs from both Canberra and America coming in to this small town, and how the locals deal with that, and whether these three nobodies can actually Do The Thing.
Tumblr media
Yes, they’re playing cricket IN the satellite dish. No, I have no idea why anybody would doubt their abilities or dedication.
Essentially, you’ve got these three blokes who’ve just been plodding along doing whatever, the way that you do when it’s just you and the gang in the middle of nowhere and nobody really cares what you’re doing as long as you get the job done. Then suddenly there’s an American Liason and politicians and diplomats and the bloody Prime Minister hanging about and maybe the three of them just doing whatever isn’t going to cut it anymore. There’s the prosperity of the town and the reputation of the nation and also the literal lives of three actual living humans on the line but they’re still just these three guys in the middle of nowhere and bloody oath, fellas, can we actually do this?
That said, it is a comedy, and a brilliant one. About 95% of the humour is derived from miscommunication, because seriously, everybody in this movie is not very smart, except for maybe the main characters. Maybe. From the Mayor calling his wife a lemon to the security guard who insists on proper radio protocol at the expense of common sense, every character has some very stupid, very funny moments.
I really encourage all of you to track this one down. For my fellow Aussies, it’s on Channel 10 on Saturday night, as it should be.

I know this post is coming almost 5 months after 2017 started and actually after the 45th President of the United States has been inaugurated, but I finally had some time to look over what had happened to us and geeks everywhere during the year of 2016.
Truthfully, what the hell happened last year??  Was everything just prearranged that most of the people I either listened to or watched while I was growing up were going to pass away during the same 12 month period?  If you were living in a hole last year like a hermit, or if you just weren’t paying attention to the news at all, I just wanted to post a list of all of the wonderful people that we lost during 2016.

Movies I Watched December and January
Tumblr media
I wrote these at Letterboxd. There were a few I rated and had nothing to say.
I’m trying to do a thing with 1997 / 20 years later. I started with Metro. It was going to be weekly. Oops.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back 2016 ★½  22 Jan, 2017 I was left wondering who was this movie for? Cobie Smulders keeps making great performances in things that don't deserve her. The ceiling of this is Bottom-Tier-Bourne-Sequel, made even more bizarre by Tom Cruise being a part of it.
Metro 1997 ★★★  20 Jan, 2017 20 Years Later. Movie #1 1/17/1997
Eddie Murphy, generally coasting on his Beverly Hills Cop coattails, stars as a hostage negotiator slash generic cop. This was Murphy's only movie after the huge success of The Nutty Professor in 1996. He lost to Beverly Hills Ninja over MLK Weekend at the box office. Michael Rappaport is hilariously miscast as a button down, bookish cop type protégé for Murphy to insult. Carmen Ejogo is the thankless girlfriend and damsel in distress. And finally, Donal Logue kind of stands out as the only actual hostage situation the hostage negotiator encounters.
So, the movie. Like I said, they drop the hostage negotiator thing pretty early as this shifts into a generic loose cannon cop chasing guy that killed his friend story that Eddie has done at least 5 times across 2 franchises. The script doesn't really give its star much time to shine and be funny, but Eddie Murphy is still Eddie Murphy and manages to liven up a dumb horse-betting subplot. The action sequences are pretty big, filling out a budget of $55 million. The largest involved a runaway cable car and more than a passing resemblance to Spider-Man 2.
It's a little generic and joyless, but just falls on the side of good for some of the random R-rated flourishes that manage to push this above being a star-studded Law & Order episode. His friend's stabbing death looked more like something out of Scream than an action movie. The director would go on to helm "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story".
Metro. The 65th most popular movie that year at the box office. A minor speed bump in Eddie Murphy's career that never really came together. Jettisoned into January, it still ended up a minor hit, almost recouping its bloated budget.
And it's the first I'm doing of this. Series? Project? Of looking back at 1997 releases 20 years later. I'm going to roughly try to go in chronological order, but I reserve the right to watch stuff whenever.
Blue Streak 1999 ★★★½  20 Jan, 2017 Lean and mean and very pleasantly above expectations. Also shoutout to the villain from The Mask still getting work.
Planet Terror 2007 ★★  19 Jan, 2017 Shoulda watched Death Proof.
Arrival 2016 ★★★★½  16 Jan, 2017 god-DAMN
La La Land 2016 ★★★★★  16 Jan, 2017 god damn it
Jason X 2001 ★  13 Jan, 2017 just lol
Wild Wild West 1999 ★★★  04 Jan, 2017 I dunno what Kenneth Branagh was paid, but it wasn't enough.
True Lies 1994 ★★★½  01 Jan, 2017 This is undoubtedly a great action movie. But the whole middle subplot with Bill Paxton is so gross.
Warcraft 2016 ★★  01 Jan, 2017 This wasn't as bad as I thought. It's even a little wild. But it feels like a prologue to something I never wanna see.
7 Days in Hell 2015 ★★★★½  31 Dec, 2016 I could not stop laughing during this. Kit Harrington surprised me.
Don’t Breathe 2016 ★★★★  30 Dec, 2016 I'm on board for every Fede Alverez/Jane Levy collaboration
The Accountant 2016 ★★★  29 Dec, 2016 Overstuffed, but well-shot. Felt like an entire season of television crammed into one long pilot episode. I don't mean that as an indictment of TV, more just the volume of subplots that could carry an episode on their own. Here they're reduced to 5-10 minutes, or throwaway lines and flashbacks.
The Accountant was frustrating. It wasn't very satisfying with the ending so open-ended, like a pilot. And a few of the good ideas and set ups are going to remain half-baked forever.
Inferno 2016 ★★  29 Dec, 2016 Tom Hanks' Bad Acid Trip starts out with some pretty unhinged visuals- death and people with backwards heads and such. The story settles down to being on the silly side of stupid, with Hanks' doctor reacting to an anagram with the zeal of a kid on Christmas morning early on. So I can't be too harsh here. But it's still pretty bad, even for Ron Howard.
Blackhat 2015 ★★★★½  28 Dec, 2016 I was enthralled.
Central Intelligence 2016 ★★½  26 Dec, 2016 Rock and Hart are fun, and there's a hint of an interesting and disturbing story at the edges here. But most of this is a mess. It just feels lazy and stop and go at times as the plot and tone yo-yo's all over the place. There are still some cool action sequences to be had with Dwayne Johnson, and plenty of funny parts as well. But it still never really comes together into something.
Also, worth noting that this is the third movie that has had an emotional climax by The Rock stripping himself naked to a crowd. Joins Walking Tall and Furious 7.
Ride Along 2 2016 ★★★  26 Dec, 2016 I loved the first one, and this was one gratuitous sequel that managed to be worthy. It's not that much more than a bigger, much slicker Law & Order episode. But the Kevin Hart/Ice Cube pairing goes a long way. Olivia Munn and Ken Jeong were fun additions to the group who I wouldn't mind seeing in a sequel a la Lethal Weapon. The action scenes were all really fun and varied. The videogame stuff is mostly annoying every time it's brought up, but the mix of visual effects in the car chase where Hart drives were undeniably cool.
The Night Before 2015 ★★★★  25 Dec, 2016 A++ Christmas Movie.
Bad Santa 2 2016 ★★½  25 Dec, 2016 Extremely lazy sequel wasting Octavia Spencer as a prostitute and Christina Hendricks as a sex object, but manages a surprising amount of laughs.
The Invitation 2015 ★★★★  24 Dec, 2016 I enjoyed this a great deal, and the ending shot is some classic shit.
Blair Witch 2016 ★★  23 Dec, 2016 It's essentially a remake and a sequel, but mostly brings the worst qualities of each to the table.
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 2000 ★★  23 Dec, 2016 Felt like a chopped and screwed remix of the first movie. But not really as fun as that would be literally.
The Blair Witch Project 1999 ★★★★  23 Dec, 2016 A classic.
The Purge: Election Year 2016 ★★★★  22 Dec, 2016 There's a lot going on here related to the actual election and what I'm sure the filmmakers thought was going to happen in November. Is this horror movie now the rosy fantasy that we'll look back on and pine for in 2019? I hope not, because I hope we'll have Purge 4, 5, and 6 by then. Or the TV show.
The Defender 1994 ★★★  21 Dec, 2016 "After all, I am an assassin, and you are just a lowly defender!"
Also I admire the tricks used to remove guns from parts of action sequences.
Deepwater Horizon 2016 ★★★★  21 Dec, 2016 There's a great and thrilling disaster movie here wedged between two embarrassing bookends. It starts with Mark Wahlberg's plucky daughter helpfully explaining the science* of his job/the premise. The real life epilogue with real testimony was also a bit too much. But at least there was the joy of seeing Trace Adkins' angry family member billed in the credits as "Massive Man".
*whatever technical basis or explanation for what happened got abandoned halfway through the big explosion
Mascots 2016 ★★★  18 Dec, 2016 Reheated Christopher Guest leftovers are still pretty good.
The Finest Hours 2016 ★★½  18 Dec, 2016 This is all very solid and okay. The parts not out at sea are an ANCHOR dragging the movie down.
Incarnate 2016 ★½  17 Dec, 2016 This movie is mostly a weird slog, and it never tries to look appealing. Most of the action takes place in dark rooms. And the term "action" is used loosely. Anyways, my hopes for Inception-laced Nightmare on Elm Street visions were dashed pretty quickly. But I did get a few chuckles out of the stupid science explanations and Aaron Eckhart's performance.
Masterminds 2016 ★★½  16 Dec, 2016 A smattering of very funny small performances and scenes. Nothing really comes together into a great laugh or exciting story. Jared Hess still is not a great comedy director. But this was way too disjointed and sloppy to really have a chance.
Spectral 2016 ★★★½  15 Dec, 2016 This movie tries on a few different hats, and wears them all just fine. You have a little bit of Aliens when the badass marine types take on the unthinkable force. It's Black Hawk Down when they take on the [fake spoiler alert] ghosts in the bombed-out city. James Badge Dale is even a little bit Tom Cruise from Edge of Tomorrow as the sci-fi type thrust onto the front lines. His transformation from fish out of water to hero stays pretty steady throughout the movie's different phases. Clayne Crawford, now of Lethal Weapon and Rectify fame, also has a slightly memorable turn as one of the ghostbusters.
I loved the mix, but it's obvious why this never found a release date, sat for months, and finally got shuttled off to Netflix. But it definitely isn't terrible.
Deadpool 2016 ★★  14 Dec, 2016 Near the end, "a CGI character" tells Deadpool about the four or five moments that make up being a superhero. Unfortunately, a few good moments do not make up a good superhero movie. For all of the sixteen walls that were supposedly shattered, this got old fast.
I don't think I can fully hate it. The few jokes that land are really good, and there's a general weird tone that is missing from most spandex movies. But I can't really like it either when it still shares the other boring 75% of every other spandex movie.
Hell or High Water 2016 ★★★★½  14 Dec, 2016 Fucking amazing. Except for a couple awkward heavy-handed lines. And I also had the thought during most of it, "what if there was a pair of bank robbers without polar opposite temperaments?" Like. They don't have to both be buttoned-down or both be "Ben Foster in every single movie i've ever seen", but, ya know.
Kickboxer: Vengeance 2016 ★★★  12 Dec, 2016 I'm probably more than a little swayed by the split screen during the credits imitating the JCVD dance moves from the first. The lead is kind of boring, but this still never really drags too long. It's really thankfully competent.
Jason Bourne 2016 ★★★  12 Dec, 2016 Alicia Vikander's amazing performance and Vincent Cassel kicking the vehicular mayhem up a couple notches in the final sequence is almost enough to make me forget the previous dour 90 minutes. Still not bad.
I Spit on Your Grave 1978 ★★★  11 Dec, 2016 I only watched the half where she slaughtered all the men.
Mechanic: Resurrection 2016 ★★½  10 Dec, 2016 I spent a significant portion of this movie thinking it was a Transporter reboot.
The Magnificent Seven 2016 ★★★★  09 Dec, 2016 Magnificent is a really strong word, but it was really, really good.
The Legend II 1993 ★★★  08 Dec, 2016 The sequel forfeited a little of its heart for bigger and more bombastic action sequences. It's still very funny, though, and a couple of the more elaborate fight scenes surpass anything in the original.
Ben-Hur 2016 ★★  08 Dec, 2016 The chariot race was extremely dope.
The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk 1993 ★★★  04 Dec, 2016 There were some incredibly crazy-cool fight scenes.

WWE IN MANCHESTER NIGHT 2 - SMACKDOWN EDITION
Hello again everyone and welcome to the 2nd part of the WWE TV tapings in Manchester, which featured on this night the blue side of the brand - Smackdown featuring the main attraction of WWE Champion Jinder Mahal vs AJ Styles.
Another night of not rushing to the venue was again the call to order as I decided to go home first for a bit of pie & chips action before catching the direct train to Manchester, arriving at 625pm.
Whilst having my ticket scanned, I was told that my block for this evening (214, row 5) wasn't opened and I was instructed to go to the ticket relocation desk for an alternative seat. To my amusement the tickets being offered were Lower Tier and Ringside Floor, so for once I took advantage of the prawn sandwich section of the crowd and moved to my position of the right hand side of ringside next to the ramp, so it was going to be great for pictures and also full of belt wearing 40 year olds rushing to the barriers after each match 😯.
Tumblr media
So what did we start off with, well a dark match involving The Fashion Police/Breezango vs a team who I havent seen in ages - The Colons who when they first started on Smackdown got a few big wins over American Alpha but disappeared without trace.
Tumblr media
This was your basic tag match with bits of comedy from Tyler Breeze rolling around to avoid one of the Colons which brought a laugh or two from the audience. As expected The Fashion Police sent The Colons packing back to obscurity for the win.
Smackdown opened with a talking segment with Shane McMahon and The New Day talking about the WWEs favourite film at the moment 'Under Siege' till the Barry Norman & Jonathan Ross of Smackdown came out to interrupt.
I am in fact just jesting about film reviews, but fuck me they dont have like the phrase 'Under Siege'.
We had the setup though for our first main contest of the evening made by Shane Mcmahon, it was Kofi Kingston vs the WWE Canvasback - Sami Zayn who since turning at Hell in a Cell has been 1-1 in his match record, which is an improvement from the previous 6 months where he was getting pinned off Aiden English cleanly every week making him that sad, he kept forgetting to wear his customary flat cap and harrington jacket.
Tumblr media
As TV matches go this was a really good 10 minute opener between 2 very capable workers and thankfully no real interference from Kofi's partners Big E & Xavier Woods and also Sami's mate Kevin Owens. Kofi got a sort of an upset win with the Trouble in Paradise and sets up an intriging tag match with The New Day vs Owens & Zayn next week.
Next up was everyones favourite Bulgarian/Russian Rusev who since his defeat against John Cena a few years ago at WrestleMania, has been criminally under used since then losing many a big match but he hasn't got the stench that say a Bray Wyatt has got from losing lots.
Rusev's opponent was my dads favourite wrestler - Randy Orton who is currently lurking around the mid to top card but with no real meaty programme.
Tumblr media
After much singing from Rusev new singing mate Aiden English proclaiming it to be 'RUSEV DAY', it was time to get down to business.
It was once again a bad night at the office for Rusev, even though he had the majority of the offence on Orton whose only telling maneuver was the match winning RKO in about 7 minutes - Poor Rusev 😢
Next up was an Intergender rules match with Becky Lynch even though she has all the moves and the looks, she also has the deep voice of former Northern Ireland Unionist Ian Paisley - She was facing the 'Chinless wonder' James Ellsworth with a few of the Smackdown womens roster around ringside.
Tumblr media
As expected it was a bit of light relief and comedy with Ellsworth being outworked and outskilled but with a bit of cheating trying to come into play from him. The match ended with Lynch catching Ellsworth in the disarmer armbar for the submission win, after the match Carmella slapped Ellsworth around which looks like it could be the end of them as an item.
Tag Team Title action next with The USOs (Champions) vs Shelton Benjamin who is bigger than you think he looks on the TV & Chad Gable.
Tumblr media
Sadly though, this on paper looked like it could be a cracker but it ended abruptly after Chad Gable chop blocked one of the USOs to take him out of the equation for the countout victory to much groaning sadly.
Now for the Main Event with 6 month and counting WWE champion Jinder Mahal vs crowd favourite A.J Styles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Much speculation before the match was whether Jinder would lose his title so close to his big Survivor Series clash with Brock Lesnar.
This was probably the best Jinder Mahal match you will have seen in the last 6 months, I do give it to him he does his role well as a slow methodical baddie even not to many peoples liking. A.J worked his balls off though here bunping like a mad man especially when he took Jinders finisher for a breathless 2 count nearfall with A.J getting his foot on the rop.
A.J managed to rid of the nuisance that was the Singh Brothers. He managed to drop Jinders throat across the top rope leaving him open for the flying forearm from A.J who connected and got the 1-2-3 for the huge win and pandemonium from the Manchester Arena crowd - just great great stuff 😍
Tumblr media
So how to you top that with it only being 9pm? Oh yes! 205live featuring the UK Championship guys which was met by a rapturous response by a scouse gentleman near me "ITS TIME FOR THE MIDGETS"!
Tumblr media
Opening segment with Enzo Amore boring the crowd to tears for 20 minutes whilst running down the WWE UK guys who he introduced one by one, with only Tyler Bate and Mark Andrews getting a decent to great response from the crowd. The rest were fair to middling with their interactions which even though its great to see them on live WWE TV it wasnt shown in the best light.
End of this segment came when Tyler Bate floored Enzo which set up a match later in the show for them two. Kalisto made the run in as well to much apathy and also to get ready for the next match with Manchesters own Jack Gallagher.
Now as much as we all like Jack, his latest villain gentleman act hasn't done many favours for him by taking away much of the charm and uniqueness he had previously, plus he is stuck with Brian Kendrick who has had many a long feud this year on 205live.
This was a decent short match as expected with Kalisto getting the win with the Salida Del Sol in 8 minutes. Kalisto sadly is met with much apathy from the crowd.
Next up was Cedric Alexander & Mark Andrews vs Joseph Conners & James Drake. A lot of the shine here was with Cedric & Mark Andrews, the latter would be a welcome addition to the Cruiserweight division.
One gripe if i was a neutral fan to British Wrestling would think Conners & Drake were the same bloke with their long hair and colourless trunks it just shouted bland. But having seen both constantly over time I know their are better versions of both lads especially James Drake who could be a grwat Babyface in the making.
Andrews got the win for his team with the SSP in around 8 minutes but it did struggle a bit with the quiet crowd.
Main event time with another Enzo Amore appearance vs former WWE UK Champion Tyler Bate. I thought this was an alright 10 minute match when Tyler was in control and not Enzo who despite his mic skills is the drizzling shits in the ring (sorry i'm burnt out from seeing 3 lots of Enzo in 2 days).
The turning point came when Bate got caught up in the top rope and took a bad fall leaving him open for Enzo to roll him back in the ring with the Jordenzo for the win to much apathy from a tired crowd waiting for the dark match.
Dark match time with Bobby ROOOOOOOOOO & Shinsuke Nakamura vs Dolph Ziggler & Baron Corbin.
This was a fun ending to proceedings with Roode and Nakamura getting the win after Nakamura hit the Kinshasa on Ziggler.
As much as he gets stick, Baron Corbin I watched intently here for the duration of the match and I love how he smack talks his opponents like a big bully and not giving two hoots what people think. He is a much better character than people think.
So that was that and another good evenings entertainment for my money with Zayn vs Kingston and A.J vs Jinder being 2 matches you should rewatch back.
205live after seeing with my own two eyes needs to be seriously put on before the Smackdown taping to keep people invested and hot into it. A stream of people left the Arena as soon as it was announced the 205 taping was taking place next.
Drink prices, well I only had a pint of Fosters for £5 a pint and a large coke for £3.80.
Next review will be Progress Wrestling in Manchester on the 12th November #grapsandclaps

'Suits' Inside 100th Episode | Hollywood Reporter
[Warning: The story below contains spoilers from Wednesday’s episode of Suits, “100.”]
Batman and Robin were back in action Wednesday night for a landmark episode of Suits, and it was about time for many fans of the long-running USA series. In the show’s 100th episode, Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) took on their two largest clients in an underhanded move that both brought justice to wronged prisoners and cleared new PSL member Alex Williams (Dule Hill) from taking the fall for the companies.
The episode was also rife with returning guest-stars, including Wendell Pierce, Jay Harrington, Paul Schulze and Rachael Harris, as Louis (Rick Hoffman) had to decide what kind of man he is. Meanwhile, Donna (Sarah Rafferty) dealt with a proposal from a married ex, and Rachel (Meghan Markle) pushed for a spot at the table alongside Harvey and Mike.
To go further behind the scenes in the making of the episode and to dissect what’s been referred to as a “love letter” to fans, THR caught up with series star and episode director Adams, along with showrunner Aaron Korsh.
Why was Rick Muirragui the right choice to write this episode?
Korsh: I asked Rick to write it because he has been with the show since the first episode. He left for six episodes in season five because we did a pilot together but I don’t really count that because I kept working with him. So he’s the only writer that’s been here with me since day one. Rick has somewhat specialized in some of the flashback episodes and he’s very good at bringing ideas to special episodes to make it a little bit more special. I knew he would bring that to the table.
Why was Patrick the right person to direct it?
Korsh: It’s not the first episode Patrick’s directed for us; it’s the fourth. Patrick has always done a great job directing, so it’s not a special event necessarily. He’s got a great eye for the camera, and in addition he’s a very critical thinker. He’s always thinking about how to make this thing better and how to elevate it to another level. He’s an actor so he knows how to talk to the actors, and I knew the episode would be in great hands with him. With any luck he’ll direct for us again. It’s good to have the episode directed by someone you know that you can trust and will do a good job with it.
Patrick was there extra pressure knowing this was the 100th?
Adams: I had no idea that the eighth episode of the season was going to be the hundredth episode, but I knew that if I was going to direct in the first ten, there is a little more prep time before episode eight because we take off a few days or a week. So early on I made it known that I would love that slot. Part of that was also because our cinematographer Dan Stoloff was only going to be there for the first 10 episodes and then he was going to do The Americans after. I really, really wanted to work with him one last time because I learn so much about camera setup and about lighting every time I work with him. So I put in the ask for episode eight. And the response was that we’d talk about it. I didn’t understand that there was this other element to it. Finally the producers called and said it turns out that it was the 100th episode, and we had to figure the politics of it and make sure it was fine.
Did you campaign a little at that point?
Adams: I just told them that I understood if they gave it to somebody else, but that I would take this opportunity very, very seriously and I would be honored to do it. I thought I could do a great job. A few days later they called and said, “Yep, we agree” and they let me do it. I was super excited and felt really honored.
Was directing something you had always campaigned for?
Adams: I said it very early on in the show because when we got up to Toronto, Covert Affairs was shooting right next to us and Chris Gorham was directing the second episode of that season. That was the first time I went, “You can do that? That’s cool.” Our shows are made by the same production company so I just made it known I’d love to have this opportunity. So I shadowed other directors and spent some time getting to know the process. I didn’t direct for the first time until the fourth season, so they gave me four years to really wrap my head around what the responsibility would be, how I would do it and which directors I wanted to sort of be mentored by. I basically ended up shadowing two different people, Mike Smith and Kevin Bray.
What was your reaction to reading “100?”
Adams: After seven years, I felt like this episode could be something of a love letter to Suits because they wrote it that way. There were a lot of great classic Suits moments in it. But for me, it was also a way of putting all of the great things that I’ve learned and what I love about the show into the episode. I wouldn’t have that opportunity as an actor, or as wide of power to do that as I did as a director.
How does the tone of Suits at 100 compare to the tone from the early days?
Korsh: The show needed to be a little more weighted or to carry a little more weight in order to last a long time. We still try to do a mix of drama and comedy. Our world is so established at this point that we’re able to pull off darker storylines like Mike going to jail. Once you’re a sixth year show, your tone is sort of established.
Adams: Ultimately, the show grew up. Everyone on the show grew up. And everyone on the show was really interested in coming to do work that felt like it was a little bit more weighted. We still feel that after seven years people have invested so much time in these characters and stories that if you’re going to make it worth their while you have to really take them seriously and not always just look for the joke. The show is smart because it has characters that are built for funny. Like Rick Hoffman can break your heart, but he’s also so great with comedy so you can write him a B storyline that keeps you laughing the whole time while Harvey is dealing with a therapist or his heartbreaking mother issues. That’s part of what the success of the show is really about.
What kinds of notes does the network give you guys at this point?
Korsh: The network and studio in general — even from the very beginning — have been incredibly supportive. They’re passionate champions of the show. They never sit back and say, “Do whatever, we don’t care.” And they never make us do a thing we don’t want to do. They’re like a mirror and ask questions that are smart. They want us to think about the repercussions of things we do. They push us to realize the consequences of the decisions we’re making and to make sure we’re really good at what we’re doing. This year early in the season Harvey was going to promote Donna to be partner. They pointed out that it was a big step. Of course it was too much. But that led us to think about Harvey being overwhelmed and making a terrible decision and then dealing with the consequences and Harvey having to basically demote her in another episode. They never said not to do it, but they pointed out the validity of it and we walked it back a little bit. That’s an example of a great partnership; it led to more story in the next episode.
Were there other special elements that felt integral to incorporate into “100?”
Korsh: The good news is that the episode landed at the eighth episode, which always lands pretty close to the crescendo that we’ve got going on in the first 10. I didn’t know that we needed inherently to double down on the specialness for 100. But when we got down to it and had to write the thing and figure out what we were doing, I knew we made the right choice with Rick. I like to think it’s just a great episode of Suits. Obviously we try to make every episode as good as we can — we’re never phoning it in. But we did try to bring a little extra love to the episode itself; at least that’s how I would phrase it.
Suits airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on USA.
