The Estonians
Tumblr media
The Estonians generally provide a decent selection of songs. In most cases, a good selection of songs become favourite songs for the whole year. There are some stinkers as well, and I put it down to culture. What is liked there is not going to be liked here, or in Spain or in Israel or somewhere else.
So here is the review. I’ve heard them before, but now I’m going to document my comments on the second listen. I will say unlike some previous years where on hearing them you know the stand out from the outset. And clearly, at this time there is no indication of if people can sing...
Semi Final 1:
1. "High Heels In The Neighbourhood" -The Swingers, Tanja & Birgit First out are past winners Tanja and Birgit, joined by the Swingers. I like the sound of the song more than the words. I like the jazz, but I don’t think the ladies are suited to this style.
2. "Supernova" - Ranele I don’t like it. It seems like they are trying to provide a modern song, but there isn’t anything to sustain interest.
3. "Deep Water" - Sofia Rubina ft Janiks Tenn Good sound to this song and has a good vibe. Could need a lyrical tweak as the lyrics seem clumsy. The title is repeated many times in case you forget where you are.
4."Hold Me Close" -  xtra basic & Emily J Another song with repetitive lyrics, but with great music that has scope to be a decent song. There is a moment in the song where I expected a musical explosion and an oriental commercial was provided instead.
5. "Miks sa teed nii?" - Johanna Eendra Starts like a safe entry, but it goes in a very interesting place. I like the chorus parts of the song. Another song that has scope to be a decent song.
6. "Storm" - Victor Crone  It’s a Stig Rästa song, but they are never the same. This is a pleasant song, it’s not extraordinarily modern, but it’s comfortable and nice to listen to.
7. "Without You", - Stefan Here is another repeat offender (previous song Laura (Walk with me). Ballad this time and it’s extremely good. The chorus is more dark and the verses are more gentle. I like this alot.
8. "Little Baby El" - Jennifer Cohen A song sung to a baby. It’s sort of urban-lite and it goes along nicely until the chorus where the clumsy lyrics begin. I’m not a fan.
9. "Soovide puu" - Sandra Nurmsalu Another returning winner, Sandra provides a high pitched ballad of sorts which is reminds me of traditional Ireland. Pleasant.
10. "Öhuloss" - ÖED It’s not bad, but it’s not great. I don’t think the voices provide much interest in the song and it seems like repeated lyrics.
11. "Smile" - Marko Kaar First, I thought it was a joke entry, then it improved considerably. May be great or crash and burn. I leaning towards the latter.
12. "Coming Home" - INGER This is very nice. It’s down to earth and pleasant. The person has a nice voice and it should do okay.
Semi Final 2:
1. "I'll Do It My Way" - Synne Valtri I don’t like it. It’s very generic, and the lyrics are clunky.
2. "Strong", -  Sissi This has potential to be something. It’s pleasant, but at the moment it seems to be going in slow-mo. Could do okay.
3. "Wo sind die Katzen?" - Kaia Tamm Good beat, but that’s about it. Could be ‘Leika’ of the national finals, but maybe not.
4. "Kaks miinust" - Iseloomad I can’t decide if I like it or not. I don’t. Weird sound, weird clip, weird. The film will break your head - i encourage you to avoid.
5. "Parmumäng" - Cätlin Mägi & Jaan Pehk This could become a cult classic in Estonian music or something completely off tune and noisy. It’s brilliant. he he
6. "Milline päev" - Lumevärv ft. INGA Confident song and presentation. Not bad, not my style either.
7. "Pretty Little Liar" - Uku Suviste Strong ballad from Uku. Has good light and shade in the music. Could do very well.
8. "Cold Love" - Kerli Kivilaan It’s okay, but very pedestrian. There isn’t anything special here.
9. "Follow Me Back" - Around The Sun Good modern sound, pleasant to listen to.
10. "Halleluja" - Lacy Jay Not sure. Mixed feelings because it could do really well or flounder. Good sound to the song, not sure about lyrics.
11. "Kui isegi kaotan" - Grete Paia This is going to make the final. It has the right sound. It’s good too.
12."Believe" - Kadiah This song is excellent. It’s a ballad and has very nice orchestration which improves the mood of the song. Could do well.
Conclusion:
It will depend on how they are performed and if the person in question can sing unassisted. Believe, Pretty little liar, Storm and Without you would be my picks from the selection, but it a decent selection of songs.

Eurovision 2019
Review of the Estonian Eurovision finals Eesti Laul:
1. Sissi - why is her name that? I hope that's not her real name, but good rythm and theme, but won't surpass her father
2. INGA - who is she? Looks like the catch me outside how bout that girl, not a good song
3. Victor Crone - pretty Swedish man who actually knows how to sing, one of the top three (Stig Rästa did it again that mad man, give him some kind of award already)
4. Kerli Kivilaan - forgettable, literally no impact, who is she? don't know her?
5. Emily J - I know her, nice girl, good singing voice, but no dictation and could sing louder
6. Kadiah - literally can't sing??? why is she there?? I only remember that she is wearing some cheep dress made out of cheep fabric
7. Synne Valtri - not a good singer?? face full of botox
8. STEFAN - nice Armenian boi, good song, top three
9. The Swingers & Co - Tanya and Birgit just reallllllyyy want to go to the Eurovision okay? good rythm tho, wannabe Epic Sax Guy™
10. Uku Suviste - actually good, one of the top three, but dancer really wants to be Loreen
11. Inger - sings weirdly from her throat for some reason?? doesn't have a vocal coach maybe?? has that Tumblr Ukulele Lesbian Aesthetic™ tho
12 Sandra Nurmsalu - can she see from under those bangs?? (wannabe Loreen) sounds like a song that'd be at the end of a children's movie (Lotte)
Honestly I'm so close to starting a petition for Nublu to go to the Eurovision, pls like pls he doesn't give a fuck, I'd soooo good

Eesti Laul 2019 🇪🇪
Kerli Kivilaan - Cold Love
this is supposed to be good, but then it’s kind of not. Think about it, this song is basically an acoustic one. This puts a lot of more focus on the vocals, which isn’t the problem. Problem lies in the lyrics. “I bet your mom wouldn’t like if she knew what you did” probably isn’t the kind of lyrics I would prefer to listen for an acoustic song. Maybe it’s just me. But I couldn’t get into this. my irrelevant ranking: 20th out of 24 songs

as of 1/9/2019, here are my tops for the NFs i have actually been tracking (EST, FRA, ESP). more for my own recollection, but comment as you please.
i definitely want to make a top for a dal soon, maybe when the field narrows since it’s amazing, and maybe for the czech selection and supernova too because why not, they’re small...
eesti laul  note: i love all songs above 17, and 20 is a guilty pleasure too. i would be happy if anything if my top 10 goes.  songs that irritate me in this selection: follow me back (ugh i cannot cannot stand the chorus! i will not be happy if this is what estonia sends with all of the other good choices they have)
24. kaks minuust iseloomad 23. follow me back around the sun 22. parmumang jaan pehk and cätlin mägi 21. supernova ranele 20. i’ll do it my way synne valtri 19. deep water sofia rubina 18. believe kadiah 17. high heels in the neighborhood the swingers 16. halleluja lacy jay 15. smile marko kaar 14. strong sissi 13. little baby el jennifer cohen 12. miks sa teed nii johanna eendra 11. öhuloss öed 10. wo sind die katzen katja tamm 9. coming home inger 8. soovide puu sandra nurmsalu 7. milline päev lumevärv 6. hold me close xtra basic and emily j 5. without you stefan 4. kui isegi kaotan grete paia 3. cold love kerli kivilaan 2. pretty little liar uku suviste 1. storm victor crone
destination eurovision france is killing it this year, i like all songs above 13! passio would be higher, but after estonia last year, idk how fresh opera will sound, even if it’s in corsican songs that irritate me in this selection: por aqui (sorry, not a fan of the lyrics and also, ditto to estonia, but too many other good options) & in the shadow (idk, i just don’t think it’s that amazing or interesting UNLESS florina has an amazing voice live)
18. la voix d’aretha the divaz 17. ma petite famille noémie 16. sois un bon fils doutson 15. por aqui tracy de sá 14. la promesse emmanuel moire 13. madame la paix philipelise 12. le petit nicolas silvan àreg  11. oulala mazy 10. j’ai pas le temps lautner 9. ce qui me blesse ugo 8. in the shadow florina 7. là-haut chimène badi 6. passio battista acquaviva 5. tous les deux seemone 4. le brasier naestro 3. comme une grande aysat 2. roi bilal hassani 1. on cherche encore gabriella
operación triunfo gala eurovisión bring it spain! i really really like everything but 10, and a new song from this selection gets stuck in my head every day (currently, it’s la clave and todo bien)
10. qué quieres que haga julia 9. hoy vuelvo a reir otra vez noelia 8. no puedo más famous 7. se te nota carlos right 6. hoy soñaré sabela 5. muérdeme maría 4. todo bien marilia 3. nadie se salva miki and natalia 2. la clave natalia 1. la venda miki
