hi! may i request friendship headcanons with kenshin and taikogane? after all, kenshin is "blood" related to mitsu, and he and taikogane both were in the same family so i wonder how they would interact?

Actually it's Taikogane that is suppose to be "blood" related to Shokudaikiri! It's rather confusing since they are just swords in the end. But Kenshin's brother is Azuki!

I never really thought of their friendship before but after this ask, my brain was filled with a bunch of fun thoughts!

Friendship with Kenshin Kagemitsu and Taikogane Sadamune

♡ Kenshin is someone who often stays away from the rest of the tantous compared to everyone else. He has such a big need to grow up as fast as he can that in turn he ends up ignoring the people who wish to spend time with him the most.

♡ Out of all the tantous, he probably spends time with Hakata the most since he thinks learning from him will help him seem more adult and independent.

♡ Taikogane, on the other hand, is very close to all the tantous!

♡ He is someone who will never leave anyone behind and try to include everyone in on the fun.

♡ So he quickly notices Kenshin looking at the group with longing to join them but always refusing. At first Taikogane would not push him to come hang out with the group but would offer every time they had plans.

♡ The answer always remained the same and Taikogane looked as his fellow tantou went off like it was his duty to refuse any fun to come his face and only work on improving himself, even though his heart wished for the other result.

♡ He knew that Kenshin would never lean into what his heart truly desired... So he came up with a plan.

♡ Teaming up with his brother, Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, and Kenshin's brother, Azuki Nagamitsu, he decided that the four of them were required to make a big cake for Saniwa's birthday.

♡ No one needed to know that Saniwa's birthday was months away...

♡ The kitchen ended up in a mess after they were done. Not because of anything Shokudaikiri or Azuki did... Hell, not even Kenshin. It was all about Taikogane was messing up and sometimes even causing mischief within the team.

♡ Kenshin trying very hard to get everything perfect to impress his brother and saniwa and- oh Taikogane just tripped and now there is sugar all over his perfect cut heart-

♡ Taikogane making a mess everywhere he goes and getting flour on his team, proving that you could work hard but also have fun.

♡ Kenshin always so stressed to do everything perfectly, found himself in a space where that was not something capable to do. Perhaps... Lashing out at Taikogane a little only for him to put a little frosting on Kenshin's nose.

♡ Even if the kitchen atmosphere was intense at times between the two, Kenshin couldn't actually find himself being angry at Taikogane. Rather than himself. Even getting so frustrated at times, they could see tears bubbling in the sides of his eyes as he tried to hide it.

♡ It was at those times, Taikogane would back off and let Azuki comfort his brother since he would know how to best talk him down from the high emotions he did not wish for others to see.

♡ Taikogane would 100% apologize after. He wanted Kenshin to laugh and have fun! Not get so mad and disappointed in himself that he cries.

♡ Taikogane doesn't leave him alone after the first meeting and actually joins him with anything that Kenshin is doing for the day. Be it training, reading, or learning math. Taikogane not the biggest fan of math but that gives him an excuse to ask a lot of questions and make Kenshin feel proud of himself for knowing the answer.

♡ Overtime, the two learn how to communicate better and actually enjoy their time.

♡ Kenshin learns how to be easier on himself and enjoy the time he has now. Realizing it is okay to have fun and he doesn't have to grow up/get strong right away.

♡ Taikogane learns new skills from Kenshin and learns the right balance of being friendly and going over the line where he is being overbearing.

♡ It's a lot of learning from the two but they both learn overtime to develop a strong bond. Often times talking about their brothers to each other and laughing.

if there’s one insect shokudaikiri cannot stand, it’s roaches. they’re offensive, gross things that can and will get into the citadel’s food stores. they also tend to live for forever, which is... bad, on a number of levels.

so, safe to say when he finds a roach in the kitchen, he screams. fair enough reaction.

the other swords on kitchen duty with him: hasebe, kasen, ookurikara, and taikogane. azuki had just returned from sortie with kenshin. we have a fine roster here, folks.

somehow, tsurumaru got on top of the cabinets and has been a relative issue thanks to his mayhem causing tendencies in the kitchen, but he hasn’t caused any psychic damage just yet.

“you’re on thin ice, kuninaga,“ ookurikara has threatened at least thrice at tsuru, while the crane wanders about the kitchen, finally settling atop the cabinets.

spurred by mitsu’s screaming, everyone turns to look at the offending item.

mayhem in three... two... one.

hasebe has already summoned his blade, ready to cut the roach in half and cause property damage. right behind him is kasen, having swiped a lighter on his way to grab a can of bug spray to add to the chaos.

it’s that brooklyn nine-nine lighter scene. gods help the saniwa.

kenshin has climbed azuki like a tree in an effort to put as much distance between him and the roach. azuki on the other hand, has taken off his shoe and is ready to smack that little bastard, while also yelling.

taikogane and shokudaikri are also similarly hiding behind ookurikara, who is armed with two cans of bug spray and looks absolutely Done with all of the others’ shit.

tsurumaru has fallen off of the cabinets, sides heaving with laughter. he’s not going to be of any assiatance.

all of this yelling further attracts daihannya and koryuu, who walk in on this chaotic mess and then promptly leave and return with a giant paper fan and another can of bug spray.

does the roach get killed in the end? who knows. but the kitchen is certainly scorched and lighters get banned from the citadel as a whole and become a forbidden topic.

what if the swords opened a youtube channel for everyone to post their videos on? i'd imagine mutsunokami being really enthusiastic about it, and starting filming everything he does like for a vlog (like in hanamaru somewhat), shokudaikiri making cooking tutorials, kashuu giving beauty tips and so on lol how would everyone feel about it and what kind of contribution would each of them give? :D

• Mutsunokami does all sorts of great videos featuring places his been and things he's doing. He really does a variety of stuff.• Feel I don't need to say it but Tsurumaru absolutely makes prank videos. Hasebe is his most frequent target. Namazuo helps him a lot, Souza also pitches in a suprising amount if it's to bother Hasebe but he hates being on camera himself.• Shokudaikiri absolutely makes cooking vidoes although most of the comments he gets are about how attractive he is. • Taikogane is his assistant for most videos and sometimes Kuri if he can rope him into it. • If Kuri had his own channel he pretends it isn't his and the uploads are blurry videos of animals in the Citadel with terrible audio. • Azuki also makes videos where he bakes and makes sweets with Kenshin as his assistant since he wanted to be like Shoku. They do collabs together teaching each other!!• Those collab videos are usually chaotic with Koryuu and Daihannya being disruptive not wanting to get left out.• Kashuu absolutely makes fashion videos, he Kotegiri and Midare work together on it and branch out into all different topics. They're constantly roping other swords into being their models and test subjects. • Idol weeb hcs returning as Manba absolutely does scouting videos. He's pretty and viewers relate to his suffering over bad pulls. • Mouri is probably taking secret videos of his brothers doing cute things, they hate it but Ichigo encourages him so he gets away with it. • For the DKgumi group playing horror games? Kuri and Doudanuki don't want to be there. • Shishou is usually the one finding games. • Mutsu always makes sure to always have cameras around to get Yamanbagiri's and Otegine's reactions, they're startled really easy. • Doudanuki is always getting in trouble for suggesting they just break the console/computer whatever when they can't get past a level. • Shishou and Otegine do most of the actual gameplay. Even though Ookurikara doesn't want to be there he's good at these types of games.

in all seriousness i really love shokudaikiri mitsutada. he’s been living in my brain rent free alongside hasebe as characters i will defend to the ends of this earth. i love this man so much it isn’t funny 🥰🥰🥰

a lot of legwork in understanding him comes from knowing historically where he’s come from, so sit down, shut up, i’m going to yell at you for 30 minutes about why mitsu is great (under the cut)

shokudaikiri is a blade from the osafune school of smithing. this means he’s related to the nagamitsus (azuki and daihannya), kagemitsus (koryuu and kenshin), uguisumaru, other mitsutadas (fukushima), and technically yamanbagiri chougi since chougi’s smith was related to the bizen-osafune school before he struck out on his own. this is all very interesting, and this means that the osafune swords are generally classified as relatives in fanon.

with all of this aside, because he was a mitsutada, it’s highly likely that he was owned by oda, who was a known mitsutada collector. as an aside, mitsu was forged in the kamakura period, so he’s among the older swords in the game. tachi were in fashion until the late 16th century, which is when uchigatana became the norm (this is a highly simplified run down, but i think this is neat).

it’s widely assumed that he and hasbe would have gotten along well together because of this, but because of hasebe’s grudhe towards oda, there isn’t much else that’s in common for them to talk about: “it seems like i'd get along with hasebe-kun well enough. but he hated his original owner, so it's hard to talk to him.”

i remember reading something interesting about the curve of the blade itself- the point of his curve being closer to the stem of the blade, rather in the middle (if you look here and here, you’ll see a clear difference in how mitsu’s blade curves compared to mikazuki’s).

anyways, nihonto rambling aside of swords as works of art, not just as tools of war (doudanuki masakuni may disagree with me), hashiba hideyoshi (or, toyotomi hideyoshi, when he was adopted by the toyotomi clan- again, another oversimplification, but i like the history of the sengoku jidai) then passed mitsutada to the date clan, where he resided until the 1700s. during this time, he picked up a lot of his key traits. date masamune was known to be a host for his guests and would cook for them when he had any over. he also allegedly would wear western suits, and though he didn’t actually wear an eyepatch, he did have a missing eye due to smallpox. the legend goes that he has his eye plucked out by katakura kagetsuna (later known as katakura kojuurou). his mother and his aunt hated him for this, because filial piety was a huge thing back in feudal japan, and to lose a part of yourself like this.

thus, mitsu wears suits, and is known for cooking.

but, i hear you say, about his name, i hear you cry. after all, he grouses about it in his book line, and his obtain line... “i don't harbour any bad feelings towards lord masamune, but my name comes from a time when i killed someone and happened to cut a candlestick that was nearby at the same time... although it really was a bronze candlestick holder, it would've been cooler if it had been something a bit more durable.”

i’m getting there.

when he was bestowed to the date clan by hideyoshi, it’s widely theorised that the candle-cutting incident happened soon after. unfortunately, there aren’t any clear records of this incident, but it’s one of those legends that have gotten widely circulated enough to the point where it’s accepted as fact, i suppose.

anyways, he stayed in the date clan for a good while, meeting taikogane sadamune and ookurikara during his stay. during the tokugawa era, however (or, the edo period), he was give to the tokugawa clan, where he was kept. this was because of major confiscation of swords to maintain the social order the tokugawa shogunate enforced. there, he was allegedly put into storage, never to hear of his masters...

and then the great kanto earthquake of 1923.

shokudaikiri mitsutada was burned in the warehouse that he was stored in- thankfully, not destroyed, but missing until his recovery in 2015. because of the damage the physical blade obtained in the fire, it’s widely theorised that he wears the gloves and the eyepatch to hide burn scars (the latter not just being an homage to his master who left the most lasting impression on him). after a lot of support from fans, he eventually was officially registered as shokudaikiri mitsutada.

this already is fuel for why i like him so much, but his kiwame only adds to his more. because of his focus on being “cool” and “stylish”, he says that he “wants to learn about true style“. it’s here that he learns that style isn’t just how you look. it’s not just an aesthetic (though, my man would definitely get into aesthetics because they look cool).

no, he learns that the true value of style is how “your way of living stays with someone, where your presence continues to be felt even when your physical vessel deteriorates, even when you disappear from the public stage”.

he knows how fleeting lives are. hell, his life was almost lost because of the earthquake and fired that claimed so many. be knows of wars and bloodshed. it’s the actions that matter, not just how you dress. he may have even been forgotten, buried in the earth for centuries. he clings to this image of “coolness” because... it’s all he has to his name. it took so long for him to be registered as himself because he was burned beyond recognition. if it wasn’t for the records that were kept of him, that charred lump of steel wouldn’t have a name- a family- to belong to.

it’s poetic. it’s sad. it’s beautiful.

it’s why i love shokudaikiri mitsutada.

Assuming all Osafune swords have come to the citadel, how does the Dategumi deal with having to share Mitsutada with the Osafune swords?

• At first the change of another group of swords wanting Shokudaikiri's attention took some getting used to but honestly I think the two groups would just kind of merge. • The Date swords are already like a family to Shokudaikiri and his real family is more than happy to be around them. • Taikogane would happily try play a big brother role to Kenshin. • Daihannya thinks rather highly of himself so he would stubbornly persistent on bonding with Ookurikara. • Koryuu and Tsurumaru are both free spirits and would goof off together. • I'm sure Azuki would love a bigger crowd to share his sweets with and have a good time with.
