Sorry not sorry This is my first art for this fandom and I hope it’s not the last (I’m only new to it, because for me MK has always been perceived as a game with online battles and I only now found out that there is a plot😅🥲)

As for this art and my thoughts… I thought that the ending, where Shang Tsung fights with Liu Kang against the Titan Shang Tsung, would be canonical for my work. I like to think that these two warmed up a bit at the end of the game and their relationship, while still incredibly rocky, moved beyond the point of hatred (Especially on Liu's part) And after all the events, when Shang Tsung was imprisoned, Liu Kang thought that it would be nice to repay for saving the world and try to negotiate with Empress Mileena to give this snake to his Shaolin temple for re-education…. AND HERE STARTS MY HUGE FANFIC THAT I'VE BEEN WRITING FOR A WEEK ALREADY I don’t know if I will publish it somewhere… Because it is in my native Russian language and I know English too poorly to translate the literary text with all sorts of catchphrases and so on… But all my thoughts about this pairing are literally based on this fanfic (plus it mentions Ashrah’s relationship with Saizot and Johnny with Kenshi) But if we take the key moments, then Kitana Liu Kang died on the battlefield, and because of this he feels quite bad (which, of course, he will never say out loud), because he was alone for so long… and this the forced meeting cost him a great loss… And Shang Tsung is angry that he was kicked out of the outside world. He thinks that Liu Kang makes him a debtor for saving him from execution and because of this he does dirty tricks. He doesn’t want to engage with the monks at all and behaves rudely and aggressively. Because of this, Liu Kang has to devote too much time to him alone, since no one can influence the sorcerer. At first, for him it is a forced burden, and for Shang Tsung it is more like a prison supervision, but over time, they begin to get used to each other and their relationship becomes closer… Sorry for such a long text, I got carried away and took up a lot of your time. so i just found out that the biggest struggle of being a translator is converting names into czech. meaning i have to change the spelling so it's accurate and readable in the language. for example Kuai Liang-Kuaj Liang, Shang Tsung-Šang Cung, Kenshi-Kenši.

the one person who has been making my life hell is fucking SYZOTH. like wtf is that name, for fucks sake. i love the dude, he's my babygirl and in all honesty it's not that i literally hate his name. it's fine in english. but it's basically UNCONVERTABLE. so like what the fuck do i do? there were three options--i just leave him be and write Syzoth in the fic; as i've done with others i just change the spelling-Sajzof (but that sounds and looks absolutely fucking horrible and please just no); or try to think of a completely NEW name, like Syzák or Syzos or something like that. which i think i'll be forced to do the third option because i don't think i could just choose which names i convert and which i don't.

oh and don't get me started on the names that actually have a fucking translation. some are fine, for example Scorpion (Škorpión). they sound cool and stuff, but what about frickin Rain or Smoke?? you could translate Rain to Déšť or Liják but when i was checking the translation for grammar and i actually read Liják in the fucking fic, i couldn't keep a straight face because what the fuck is that 😭😭?? and smoke? who is, by the way, the centric of the fic? fucking Kouř or Dým. like dým isn't that bad, but still it makes me laugh so hard. and it all sounds so cringe. in my eyes at least. i know that it's nooormaaal to translate names like that but they just don't sound as cool anymore 💔.

and at last i am NOT excited when i actually get to Sub-Zero. gonna call him fucking Pod-Nulou (Below-Zero) and that's gonna be it. or zmrzlý mužík (iced man). because why not. this whole ordeal is making me go crazy anyway.

Kombat Kid Frost AU headcannon:

This is all based off of conversations had with @running-with-the-feels the creator of this au, as well as some personal thoughts of mine. Go ahead and give them some love as they are the creator of this world and me a happy little jester.

Takeda and Frost had known each other years before the team was formed and have a very strong rivalry/sibling relationship. To outsiders they hate one another, but the jabs and insults had lost their malice years ago. They genuinely have a lot of respect and admiration for one another.

Frost challenged Cassie’s authority a lot in the beginning and there were many a failed mission because her and Jin refused to be team players. It took a very stern talking to from Kuai Liang and Takeda almost dying trying to save her ass for her to get her act together.

Jin and Frost 100% talk shit about the others behind their backs. He is her best friend by default.

Jin runs a betting pool for when Frost and Takeda fight, which is often. The whole base is in on it save for General Blade, who forbids gambling amongst the troops. Don’t worry, Johnny is an expert at hiding things from her.

After questioning Jacqui about her frequent hairstyle changes, the Specialist suggested that Frost would look cute with a pixie cut. She scoffed at the idea of ever wanting to be perceived as “cute”. Lin Kuei are not cute. She went ahead and got the cut a week later.

Cassie, the disaster bi, has a bit of a crush on Frost.

Frost, the repressed lesbian, has a bit of a crush on Cassie.

Frost and Jax get along swimmingly and both agree, Jacqui is way out of Takeda’s league and that she could do better. Though Frost will admit he is the most eligible out of all the guys she has seen on bace. Certainly the most skilled in kombat, which should be the most important deciding factor when looking for a suitor.

Frost, however is secretly very happy for Takeda and would never try to convince him to give up his own happiness. She’s the one that convinces him to propose in the first place. She will forever deny this though.

They have all taken to randomly speaking in a jumbled mess of English, Mandarin, and Japanese and it drives Sonya mad. Hanzo and Kuai Liang are the only ones capable of translating because they were the ones that started this whole mess and accidentally passed it on to their apprentices, who then spread it to the rest of the team.

Jin has taught Frost how to pickpocket. Takeda is her main target. He catches her half the time thanks to his telepathy which, of course, leads to them fighting.

Sonya has mandated Frost attend therapy. They go through a lot of therapists.

The antics of Frost and Takeda have left Sonya with more than a few new grey hairs. The fact that Hanzo, Kuai, and Johnny seem to think this is normal behavior has given her even more grey hairs. Kenshi has stopped responding to messages about the two.

In private Takeda refers to Frost as Ane-San (big sister) and Frost refers to him as Di Di (little brother). They’ve slipped up a few times around the team but no one has called them on it.

They have tried to take Frost to a club once. Never again.

What Did I Do In 2022?

Game Translations That Aren't YTTD: 1. Okay, maybe 1.5.

First of all, while I didn't add it until later in the year (not entirely unmotivated by the Stability of Platforms), my site now has an RSS feed for notable updates of any kind! I mention this upfront because I'm mostly just going over the things that are already listed there. It currently retroactively covers everything back to 2020, but I might add more past stuff over time so it can better serve as a general "everything I've ever done" page.

In February, I translated Kenshi Yonezu's POP SONG (and an interview). Noel The Mortal Fate Seasons 1-7 also got a revamped version on consoles (Switch, PS4); the console versions include a new Season 3.5 translated entirely by me, and the rest of the seasons have a revised script which is more thoroughly edited by me than even the redone Steam translation was.

In March, the update adding Kai to Your Time To Shine came out. Yes, he is Kai.

In April, I finally finished up my unofficial Japanese translation patch for Petal Crash. たのしいね、クラッシュ！ It actually just got some extra attention after the Petal Crash run for RTA In Japan about two days ago, which is kind of wild. Is this what it's like to be famous...? (clueless)

In May, I translated Kenshi Yonezu's Shin Ultraman theme song M87 (interview, interview), and the coupling song from the single, ETA. And there was an article about the 10th anniversary of his debut!

Also in May, the Ib remake came out on Steam in English! Told you they'd contact me. It was later announced to be coming to Switch, scheduled for March 2023.

In August, Your Turn To Die was announced to be coming to Steam. It's planned for early 2023, but to be clear, it'll release first in Early Access still with no final part, though with some exclusive mini-episodes and character profile sheets. Apparently once that's out, the actual completion is estimated for 6 to 12 months later... but, you know. Estimates are hard.

In September, I put together a guide for and officially "released" my Custom Translation Engine plugin for RPG Maker MV, the one I made for the Ib remake, and back-implemented into Your Turn To Die shortly after I was contacted about it coming to Steam. It's fancy (in-game language switching!), convenient (minimal direct editing of code!), and you can use it for your own translation projects if you want!

In October... well, I didn't do anything new for it, but I'll take credit for The Witch's House MV coming to consoles. (Switch, PS4, Xbox) I also translated everyone's favorite Chainsaw Man opening KICK BACK, associated interviews, and the single's coupling song Y'all Should Be Ashamed.

Finally, in December, after lots of spending my time elsewhere and indecision about how I should go about returning to doing some dang free game translations, I concluded that what I'd really wanted to do all year was translate Uri's PEDESTAL.

I think some people latched onto specific parts of Uri's original explanation for why it wasn't being translated, such as the cultural aspects (I honestly winced at her blunt remark that the story was "no good at all"), but while Uri indeed had those doubts at the time of release, the only real reason it wasn't translated at the time is that I did a less-than-ideal rushed playthrough that slightly hurt my overall impression of its quality, and I felt too busy at the time to work on something with lots of text that was likely to be divisive. So similarly, me finally feeling up to it was the reason it did get translated. I probably should've come back to it quite a bit sooner (after I was made to give up a certain other translation, say), but as I alluded to in last year's post, I was self-conscious about "my big return to free game translations" being something that might not have wide appeal. Uh, glad to be past that, hopefully.

Oh, and ever since finishing PEDESTAL, I've been working on all sorts of overhauls to my site, but like... not the kind that actually majorly changes any part of the visible design and annoys people (and if something did change in an annoying way, it's probably accidental). Some of it's just better consideration of mobile browsing (stuff like images or tables sticking out of bounds at mobile resolutions), or making things more convenient for myself behind the scenes (did you know I made a program to add "br"s to every line of all lyrics content before considering I could just have the page code do that, and also better?).

Some more major observable changes include general renovations to the lyrics page (bigger font size, buttons that hide individual languages to aid in side-by-side comparison), and more convenient navigation of OSTER's tweets, such that I could actually imagine someone reading through them all the way from the start without it being too much of a hassle.

While I'm glad to be over the PEDESTAL hump, I don't... necessarily have any definite plans for upcoming free game translations. I mostly just have some stuff on a list that I may have to make myself check out soon enough. Also, Game Atsumaru (which you may know as The Site That Hosts YTTD's Japanese Version) is ending in June??? So uh, might have to accelerate checking out stuff on there, though I guess it depends on how many creators are able to migrate. (Nankidai does plan to put YTTD's Japanese browser version up somewhere else.)

As I mentioned, Your Turn To Die's Early Access release on Steam should be coming up early next year with those mini-episodes and character profiles, and the game might be completed within the year. No promises. I mean, I don't have anything to promise, it's not my game.

Speaking of my game... also no promises. But I'd really like to release one. We'll see what happens. There's also a different kind of original project I recently returned to trying to make real, which could come early in the year, but who knows. As should be apparent, I'm working on a lot of different fronts here, so I frequently feel bad about neglecting such-and-such type of creative work, which sometimes means nothing actually gets done and released. Ultimately, though, it's probably better to follow what I most feel like doing, rather than force focus on one thing and end up not actually getting much done.

Which is to say: hoping to finish something in the new year!

The stream started at 10pm for me but 11pm in Japan. There was a lot of waiting then surprise, Armis! They were there to introduce themselves and basically notify everyone that the concert is pre-recorded and that there is a possibility that a Holostars talent is streaming. At the time, Aruran was having a watch-a-long together with Shien. Rio and Roberu also showed up. Axel was also having a watch-a-long while making food. I later found out that Hakos Baelz and Kureiji Ollie also had a watch-a-long.

This is a nice unit. I’m surprised by this unit. Miyabi is usually bubblegum pop, Fuma is usually cool kpop-ishi and Izuru has that husky voice. I’m just very appreciative of this, they sound so cool.

This performance was just fire!! They are also moving a lot, but it's not a concern for these guys' endurance since Aran goes to the gym frequently, Oga always rides his bike at night, and Gamma does stream Ringfit Adventure. The only missing member of this unit is Temma, another exorcist enthusiast . But gosh they sound so good together, high energy performance of sorts. Oga is so cool!!

I just noticed, Aran is mainly in the middle cause his clothes are white, green on the left and red on the other. Oga, on Aran’s left, is mainly black and green and Gamma, on Aran’s right, having black and red. It’s kinda nice.

In terms of collab songs with Hololive, I think last year’s Cinema still holds number 1 for me. Suisei and AsuIzu just nailed that performance! 2nd place is Sora, Azki and Rikka’s WASURENA.

Ok this is a bit embarrassing but I actually don't know that many! Mostly because I have such a huge backlog of books to get through that I don't really have the time to really explore the genre, but also because I think Koukyuu no Karasu is kind of exceptional in the "inner palace" genre since it really leans into the "occult fantasy" angle and the dark atmosphere, while most of the books I've seen, at least from reading their synopses, seems to be more about political intrigue and romance and don't really have any fantasy elements. Of course I'm no expert on the genre so there are probably some books out there I've never heard of! Also I'm not familiar with Chinese novels at all so there might be similar series in Chinese that I'm not aware of

I recommend checking out the Orange Bunko (publisher) site since I found a lot of books I liked there

Also keep in mind that a lot of these are only in Japanese with no fan translations as far as I can find, also I haven't read all of these so I can't guarantee if they're what you're looking for

Some series that have the same inner palace setting:

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto/The Apothecary Diaries: Probably the most famous out of all of these. A "mystery-solving" series with political intrigue and a clever apothecary and a handsome eunuch. It doesn't have any fantasy elements, although I think it leaves the inner palace setting at some point after book 4/5 (well Koukyuu no Karasu also leaves the setting in the later books). The characters are interesting as well. The novels and the manga (the one with nekokurage as artist) are licensed in English

Futsutsuka na Akujo/Though I am an Inept Villainess: A rising star that will probably get an anime one of these days. It's a body-switching comedy with a beloved "butterfly" who's good at everything and a "sewer rat" who's hated by everyone. It has some fantasy elements but the main focus is on the hijinks from the body switching. The novels and the manga are licensed in English

Kinkakoku Shunjuu (金椛国春秋) - I've only read part of the manga but from what I can tell, it follows a boy who's forced to pretend to be a girl and enter the inner palace after his whole family was killed because of a custom that orders the family of the empress to be killed when she gives birth to an heir (or something like that). No fantasy elements as far as I know. The novels and manga aren't translated

Koukyuu no Kenshi Nyokan (後宮の検屍女官 , The Coroner Court Lady of the Inner Palace) - I'm actually reading the first book! Like the title says, it follows a court lady who's sleepy all the time except when it comes to corpses, and she teams up with a eunuch who serves the empress to solve the mysteries behind them. I think it's the closest one on this list to Koukyuu no Karasu, at least in terms of the dark and mysterious vibe. The novels and manga aren't translated

Saiunkoku Monogatari: I've never read this or watched the anime but it's set in the inner palace and has some fantasy elements, so...also from what I've read online the ending is pretty sad? The fan translation for the novels seemed to have stalled

Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower: Never read this either but it's set in an inner palace and seems to be more romance focused. It's licensed in English

Series that aren't set in the inner palace but have similarities to Koukyuu no Karasu

The Twelve Kingdoms: I've never read these books or watched the anime, but I saw a lot of people comparing them because they apparently have similar settings? It's probably because they're both set in fantasy China. The fan translation seems to be ongoing

Karasu ni Hitoe wa Niawanai/The Yatagarasu series (烏に単は似合わない) - I'm also reading this one (I don't recommend it for beginner Japanese readers since it can be pretty difficult), although it appears only the first one involves consorts and concubines and harem intrigue (it's not set in the inner palace but it has the same vibes). Apparently the first book is really misleading about the protagonist (who's a bit infamous). It's set in this world called Yatagarasu where certain people can change into birds or something like that. I believe the series change protagonists after the first one and has some pretty wild plot developments. The novels and manga aren't translated

Ryuu no Kuni Gensou (龍ノ国幻想): It's by the same author as Culinary Chronicles which is surprising since this one gets really dark at some points. It's not set in fantasy China but fantasy ancient Japan, set in a continent where dragons coexist with humans. In this world, girls who can't hear the dragons' voices are executed. The MC's sister was killed because of that, so MC (also a girl who can't hear the dragon's voices) decides to pretend to be a man and become emperor so she can change the law. It's honestly a wonderful series and I'm currently reading the third book (4th coming this month!). The novels are not translated

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson: Ok so maybe it's bc I'm reading this book right now so it's on my mind but I honestly feel like this book has a lot in common with Koukyuu no Karasu. They both have female protagonists with sad pasts who aren't the most socially adept, they have dark atmospheres, there's ghosts, there's no romance...I mean I honestly enjoyed this book so I'd recommend it regardless

Books by Shirakawa Kouko (actually the only ones by her I've read so far)

Kyoto Kurenawi-sou Kitan (京都くれなゐ荘奇譚) - an urban fantasy set in Kyoto. The MC is a girl cursed to die at 20 and meets a boy who might be the key to undoing her curse.

Hanabishi Fusai no Taima-jou (花菱夫妻の退魔帖) - a fantasy set in Taisho Japan. The MC is a noble girl who can see ghosts, and one day she runs into a young man accompanied by a vengeful spirit who eats ghosts. For some reason, he immediately asks her to marry him. Imo the horror elements in this one are more "horror-like" than Koukyuu no Karasu. I really like this one so I'm actually working on a translation. I'll probably post it on Foxaholic tho

Danse macabre is here because i was describing their dynamic as "some sort of 'danse macabre'" because this tone poem (i looked it up in Wikipedia lmao) was getting recommended to me the whole time and i guess the name of it really got into my head (oooh dance, ooooh of death). The fun part of it, i haven't even listened to it until after 7th session, so i was very pleasantly surprised to hear that it actually fits (here my criteria was "can i daydream about an animatic with this song?" and yes, i could (basically, the pacing and the vibe of the Danse macabre fit the story))

The Front Bottoms - Be Nice To Me & Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man: so, these two are grouped together. Why? Because when talking about my boys I'm mostly looking at first verses (well basically everything before second verses) of each (as you could see in my little spreadsheet, Be Nice To Me is applied to Mumbo (theres also an animatic (clickable) i found, it basically shows what i mean here) and Little Lion Man is applied to Grian). But hey, what about the second verses? Well, it's just theres another LL duo these two songs fit very well (Ethubs. I'm talking about Ethubs. Be Nice To Me - Bdubs, Little Lion Man - Etho). This makes sense in my head and i needed to explain my vision and it does go deeper than that.
