delle seyah angrily throwing dirt at aneela and aneela turning around and demanding “did you just throw forest filth at me?” and delle seyah shouting “do you have any idea what I’ve been through? I suffered for you! I carried a jaqobis for you! and I will not carry bags for you. I love you, aneela, but you do not get to treat me like less now that I’m a human. no one is more queen than me.” and aneela smiling and saying “you haven’t changed. I thought I lost you.” and delle seyah asking “because I’m human?” and aneela answering “because I’m not. I don’t care how others see me. but I don’t want to be a monster to you.” 🥺

Why I reckon the liveships make a pretty nifty trans allegory - a mini essay by the Leah
Spoilers for a bunch of ROTE ahead, you have been warned!
So I, somewhat recently, did a full reread of ROTE because I love this book series more than life itself. And on this reread I noticed that I really, really vibed with the liveships this time around. There was something about them that just spoke to me. As I thought on it a little bit, I realised that what the liveships go through, from the liveship traders to the fitz and the fool trilogy, was hugely relatable to me as a trans woman. So that's what I'm here to talk to you funky people about today.
I must preface all this by saying that what I'm about to write is coming from the perspective of a binary trans woman who has medically transitioned. So for you other trans folks who are non binary, or those who aren't interested in medically transitioning, you potentially might not relate to this in the same way I have. Although maybe you will! I don't fucken know, I ain't a mind reader.
Anywho, let's get on with it, shall we?
The part about the liveships that speaks to me is when they finally find out who they are. Throughout the liveship trilogy we get little inklings that there's something up with the liveships. Beyond the obvious fact that these bitches are sentient, talking wood, you get these moments where it seems that there's something more to them than that. The serpents following Vivacia because she smells like she who remembers, paragon dreaming of dragons, Amber/Beloved/Fool/Lord Golden, noted Dragon scalie, being all up in the liveships business. Then we get the big reveal. The liveships aren't just talking wood. They're the husks of unfinished, dead dragons, carved into the likeness of a ship and reanimated by the blood of their captains.
Some of the liveships, like Paragon, had already figured this out. And the reactions by those who didn't already know are a mixed bag. Some ships, like the Tarman, are content to keep living as they are and accept their lives as is. Others, like Vivacia, try to find a synthesis between their respective draconic and human natures. And then you have ships like Kendry. He was, as far as we're aware, mostly happy with his lot as a Liveship. At least he was, until he saw Tintaglia. Once he sees her, that great, beautiful, blue and silver dragon, he immediately realises the wrongness that of his life. He wasn't meant to be a ship, he was meant to be a dragon. A Lord of Sky, land and sea. He's completely incapable of reconciling who he is now with who he should've been, and it crushes him.
In a lot of ways, I'm like Kendry. I never questioned my identity the way Paragon did, I didn't know I was a woman from the age I was four. I just plodded along, accepting that I must be a man despite knowing in my heart that something was deeply wrong with that. And then, like Kendry, I saw a trans woman. And only then did I realise something wasn't right. Only then did I realise that that was what I was meant to be. And again, like Kendry, this crushed me. My current form, carved for me without my consent and enforced onto me by societal expectations, was wrong. And i thought it would stay that way forever.
That was until I found out about this funky little thing called hormone replacement therapy.
And what was that special liquid Robin introduced in her very first trilogy? That's right dear reader, Silver.
That magical goop that can turn stone into dragons, can make nifty Elderling knick knacks, and create a homosexual telepathic bond between our favs Fitz and Beloved, also happens to turn liveships into dragons. Now, disregarding the criticisms I have for how ridiculously convenient it is for silver to do this, I do love the parallel I can draw between silver and HRT. The liveships, who are so deeply unsatisfied with their bodies and long to be like the dragons they were supposed to be, can use this magical medicine to do just that. And as contrived as it may be, I think it's beautiful. Even as the trader's council tries to stop them, or their own families try to convince them to stay as they are, the liveships persevere. Just like me choosing to be a woman, the liveships say fuck you to societal expectations and choose to be dragons.
And to that I say: fuck yeah 🤙🤙.

Started watching Killjoys five days ago... We're four episodes into S3 already. I even voted to delay watching this week's DW episode, because I wanted to start S3 tonight.
It's just SO good!!!! M/F mains who actively and VOCALLY discuss their undying, UNSEXUAL, love for each other? Everyone is queer and it's just so the norm in this world that it's not even worth mentioning. The plot lines are sooooo incredible and intriguing. Every single character is fully fleshed out with complexities and I love them.
I know I'm way late to watching this show, but damn, it was well worth the wait. My only regret is that there are only five seasons and at this rate, we'll be done by the holidays 😭

And those rarest of creatures...
My Top 10 Favorite Canon ENDGAME OTPs
(and I realize some of these will be a surprise because I haven't posted that much about them but... well, when everything is perfect and nothing hurts there's less need for venting... also a bunch of them don't align with my Tumblr heavy periods or precede them entirely, so...)
1. Parker and Hardison - Leverage
Tumblr media
The absolute sweetest couple maybe ever. The way Hardison just... loves Parker, without ultimatums or impatience. Just there once she's ready to meet his feelings with her own. And Parker, knowing she's developed feelings for... 'pretzels' and admitting it in the only way she can initially. So good.
---
2. Aneela and Kendry - Killjoys
Tumblr media
You give me two amoral queens, have them be evil and immortal, and have them fall in love? I was a goner from the word go. Giving them a sci-fi kid just added fuel to the fire.
---
3. Jo and Zane - Eureka
Tumblr media
I shipped the 1.0 version too. But when they accidentally erased the original timeline and had Jo remembering being in love and nearly engaged and having Zane not? Damn. Talk about angsty ship bait.
---
4. Kensi and Deeks - NCIS: Los Angeles
Tumblr media
Sunshine and gunpowder. Freaking made for each other and doing a proper piney slow burn. My jam.
---
5. Magnus and Alec - Shadowhunters
Tumblr media
I mean. Do you think I could resist a grand wedding crash with a 'if your son wants me gone he's going to have to say it to me himself' with the widely grinning sister of the miserable groom going 'I invited him'? What am I, made of stone? (War of Hearts is tattooed on the inside of my eardrums).
---
6. Nico and Karolina - Runaways
Tumblr media
Okay. But like, even beyond the flawless imagery of Gothic Witch Queen and Royal Heir of Sunshine and Rainbows... they were so captivating. So ready to sacrifice anything for each other's happiness. I love them your honor.
---
7. Xiao Lanhua and Dongfang Qingcang - Love Between Fairy and Devil
Tumblr media
"Everything in this world is fate. Only love is not fate."
Talk about ripping out my heart. In a story built around two people more trapped by fate than anyone, they save each other by doing the one thing fate has no say over.
(I usually prefer my romances to be the B and C plots, but these two? They are the exception that proves the rule. This whole show is their love story and I was spellbound for 36 episodes straight).
---
8. Shawn and Jules - Psych
Tumblr media
So. Much. Pining. And the inclusion of the cruelest 'I love you' known to man, because who doesn't love a good 'I've been shot, and the guy who shot me just let me call my girlfriend but I'm using the call to give out clues about how to find me, so I'm pretending you're Abigail, but he's listening and he wants me to tell you that I love you and I know... think... suspect... that saying it will hurt you, but I don't have a choice and I'm so sorry'.
---
9. Nikita and Michael - Nikita
Tumblr media
They both know what it feels like to lose someone you love. Which is why the way them kinda having at least a scene a season where one of them thinks the other just got killed is brutal. But I live for the looks on their faces when they figure out they're wrong.
---
10. Korra and Asami - Legend of Korra
Tumblr media
What's more fun than falling in love with the ex boyfriend's ex girlfriend? Nothing. They got me to stand up and pay attention right quick once I realized where this was going (and the finale was how I started watching reaction videos... it made me so happy watching everyone else cry, cheer and squee too)

one of the few good faith questions about s1 gender roles is why louis is only paralleled with white women. why does the show make him iolanta, melisande, nora helmer, etc and not claire kendry or janie crawford, characters who also appear in literature from the show's time period. why is he reading flaubert, colette, edward carpenter and not claude mckay or nella larsen who actually writes a lot about interractial relationships. on one hand the showrunner is white and maybe those are the texts he feels most comfortable with, but there are more than a few black creatives working on the show who are contributing in significant ways.
first of all, characters like iolanta, stella kowalski and nora helmer do not need to be white. they are white in their original forms because the writers were white and sometimes based them on real people. tenessee williams always wanted to have streetcar performed by diverse casts even though he based the characters partly on people in his own family. many productions now have non-white actresses in these roles (assad zaman was in one of these productions of a doll's house). also we can safely say lestat assigns melisande to louis because that's the kind of shit he's into (french opera based on a belgian story) and he's not really well read.
beyond that though, to me the reason louis is paralleled with white women is because he's married to a white man in 1910 louisiana where not only was interracial marriage illegal but homosexual relations and even interractial cohabitation were banned. but because of lestat's power, money and their vampire powers, these roles don't really apply to them. people who were in interracial or homosexual relationships in the 1910s had very different struggles and conflicts from loustat, like most of them could barely step outside without worrying about their safety. they certainly wouldn't be parading around society together all the time while even the politicians and authorities know about their relationship. so how do you make sense of your marriage if its very existence is anachronistic?? who's writing about your experiences if your experience is such an outlier in your society literally due to supernatural forces? there's no shortage of black literature in this time period (which overlaps with the harlem renaissance!) but being married to a white man is quite fundamentally different to being married to a non-white man especially in early 20th century. a white man has complete control over his dominion which includes the home and the outside world. a non-white man may have control over his home but the minute he steps out the door he's at the mercy of white men, he could be killed for simply looking at someone the wrong way, which makes non-white men impossible to relate to lestat. and who was allowed to be married to white men in those days? white women.
and ultimately louis is nora because the conflict of needing to escape an overbearing husband was something allowed only to white women in literature/theater. the reason we find so many parallels between louis and white female characters like belle even now is because his role in this story is largely reserved for white women and this has clearly ruffled a lot of feathers because its unfamiliar. i'll be curious to see what the show does as time moves forward but for season 1 it's very clear to me why the show chose these specific intertextual references.

Hudson and Rex S04E10 - Blood and Diamonds - Part A
This is a better episode than S04E05 but it follows the same motif and I don't know who thought it was a good idea for someone to come to the team, tell them they might need oversight, and then get two out of two cases with them when they are the ones who try to derail the investigation.
Black letters in quotes: Actual show quotes.
Green letters in quotes: What I come up with my twisted brain.
Tumblr media
Mmm, coffee.
Sarah's father was a jeweler. And a plumber? Sarah has certainly inherited his skill for acquiring various skillsets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Why am I being punished because the guy is afraid of me?"
Tumblr media
Unwarranted, although to be fair, if she's all over a case, we'd have to do what she says.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Charlie loves the idea.
Tumblr media
Another luxurious undercover role for Jesse lol
Tumblr media
Rex: "Back at you, lady."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, she has a point. Dogs aren't exactly made for stakeouts. But our superdog can do whatever he wants.
By the way, I'd watch a show with them as a cop duo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's clearly impressed.
Adele: "What do you do in your spare time, Detective?" Charlie: "Bold of you to assume I even have spare time." (I think my answer is actually better than Charlie's lol)
Tumblr media
Just how close is Charlie to her family?
Tumblr media
Oh my god, she has a boyfriend and her dad is asking her if she's dating Charlie. We love Papa Truong.
Tumblr media
You can play with your necklace all you want, no one believes you're just friends.
Tumblr media
Is this a Once Upon A Time reference?
lol she's disgusted by his eating habits.
Tumblr media
Are you two going to be paying attention while doing the surveillance this time? Also, not one is "bummed to not get assigned van duty".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao don't push her, Jesse. One reason I want more undercover storylines is to see Mayko Nguyen play an undercover persona that would resemble Delle Seyah Kendry's mannerisms and temper.
There's a lot of... just watching... in this episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I was talking to my work wife!"
And then she throws the walkie-talkie at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*snorts*
The reason Charlie really wanted Rex reveals itself in the form of a hundred bathroom breaks.
Well, I didn't even try to keep the images in control because I'd figured it wasn't that kind of episode but I forgot about the comedy, so, unfortunately, this will have to be continued in Part B.

"Clare had known well enough that it was unsafe to take a portion of the dollar that was her weekly wage for the doing of many errands for the dressmaker who lived on the top floor of the building of which Bob Kendry was janitor. But that knowledge had not deterred her. She wanted to go to her Sunday school's picnic, and she had made up her mind to wear a new dress. So, in spite of certain unpleasantness and possible danger, she had taken the money to buy the material for that pathetic little red frock."
"For about a year or more afterwards she would appear occasionally among her old friends and acquaintances on the south side for short little visits that were, they understood, always stolen from the endless domestic tasks in her new home. With each succeeding one she was taller, shabbier, and more belligerently sensitive."
"An attractive-looking woman, was Irene's opinion, with those dark, almost black, eyes and that wide mouth like a scarlet flower against the ivory of her skin. Nice clothes too, just right for the weather, thin and cool without being mussy, as summer things were so apt to be."

“It’s funny about ‘passing.’ We disapprove of it and at the same time condone it. It excites our contempt and yet we rather admire it. We shy away from it with an odd kind of revulsion, but we protect it” “Rene, dear…your way may be the wiser and infinitely happier one. I’m not sure just now. At least not so sure as I have been” A short book that left one of the biggest contradictory feelings left in me. The idea of “passing” (where light skin women and men could pass for white) is explored through the tumultuous friendship between Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry. Clare’s character was far from perfect in passing for white in order to experience luxury-even so, she kept my interest and I wished the story was a bit longer so that it could explore her a little more. Irene, surprisingly, was equally frustrating in her attempt at maintaining her “perfect life” despite her husband’s restlessness to move and wanting to protect her kids from racism. However, her duty to stand up to protect her race made her more dimensional. If anything, both women were living lives of delusion (believing and wanting things only for themselves) and being something they weren’t (and never should’ve been). Larsen perfectly captured the tragedy of living a race that isn’t yours and what happens when you put your heart over the duty of your race. @thebookjoint_ #mybookfeatures #bookishpost #bookishlife #bookishfeature #bookishphotography #bookishcommunity #mybookfeatures #readingaddict #readingcommunity #readinglife #readingislife #readersgonnaread #bookstagram #avidreader #bookreview #bookrec https://www.instagram.com/p/CpyaAGzrNQe37D8qh0TDqcC_IEoNXSzaho4DP80/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Week 16 Blog
My most important quote of this week was "The sun shined a little brighter that day on us." from page 125. In the ending pages of this book we really emphasize the energy of tragedy. All throuhgout this book slowly builds a sense of tradgedy and sadness is it seems our main women slowly come to terms with the fact the life they have worked hard to enjoy is in fact nothing like how they wanted it to be. Tension between the girl build as their inner discontent builds into something palpable and they begin to become harsh tongued and aggressive with the girls meant to be their only allies in this quiet secretive world the have build to survive. Tensions hit an all time high as the main woman Clare suspects her husband is cheating on her, the woman who was said to have it all. In fragments of her despair reaching a high and her life falling apart, in almost an air of symbolism Clare falls out of a high story window and plummets to her demise.
I enjoyed this quote because i find it to be a double edged sword, in some ways it seems to show happiness as the sun usually represents joy and cheer but on the other edge it shows how the women are letting this long game facade slip past them and start to do things like bask in the sun, at the risk of them gaining a tan skin and being exposed for their heritage and anything other than a fully white woman. It shows they have grown weary of simple things like the sun possibly having the power to end this life of luxury they so highly valued. Though tragic, i think the death of Clare Kendry, a woman introduced as this highly sought after and admired woman is packed full of purposeful symbolism from who she is, to how her life spiraled out of control, to how she died. To be this highly sought after woman, to be cheated on by her apparently highly doting husband. To the way as her life fell out of her grasp, she fell to her death. To me it really showed just the release of this life, and what it meant to her, which if renounced by these women, wouldve have killed them regardless. It shows the only way out for these women, in the end, was death.
