life was easy when he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth . everything passed down to him on a matching silver platter . the first and only child born to bartholomew and cynthia alexandre . the path of his life was already laid out before him . at the end of the line , he was set to inherit his father's investment empire . passed between generations of alexandres , there was nothing he needed but the name he bore .

for the first eight years of his life , they were the picture of a happy , loving family . white picket fence and everything on the outskirts of new york city . (robbery tw, gun tw) one quick call and his cronies were there . guns in hands , identities concealed . a plan formed not out of necessity but out of a need to push the boundaries . to see how far he could go before he learned what a consequence was . he did it because he could . because he had the world at his fingertips , and it wasn't enough . glass shattered , littering the floor of the gas station . laughter echoing through the room , mixed in with the crunching sound of their steps towards the register . the police were already nearby , and , before roman could even fire a warning shot , he was in cuffs . the weight of the cold metal completely different than the weight of the tag heur against his wrist . shoved onto the sidewalk behind the place . gaze fixated on the blinking fluorescent street light as his father berated him . and he couldn't even move his hands to wipe off the spit . a deal was made . not just between bart and the officers but bart and roman as well . money exchanged between gloved hands and the cuffs fell away .

From the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s, Canadian singer/songwriter and guitarist Bryan Adams was one of the most successful recording artists in popular music worldwide. Usually dressed in blue jeans, sneakers, and white T-shirts, the energetic performer stalked stages around the globe, electric guitar in hand, singing his own up-tempo pop/rock songs and ballads before audiences numbering in the tens of thousands. He released a series of multi-platinum albums containing chart-topping singles featured in popular motion pictures. His raspy voice, simple compositions, and straightforward musical approach earned him early critical approbation as a likable if unoriginal rock & roll journeyman, but as he began to become massively popular, reviewers increasingly pointed out the clichés in his lyrics and the derivative nature of his music, especially as he softened his style in the early '90s for his hit movie theme songs. By the end of the '90s, his record sales had fallen precipitously and he had become largely identified with his movie work, though he continued to tour extensively, playing his many hits.

Bryan Adams is one of the guys from that list of raspy white singers, like Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton, and Sting, who have a tendency to make white lady Boomers swoon. They weren’t always adult contemporary staples (except for Bolton), but as they grew older, their music tended to be less fierce. Adams first hit real paydirt with his classic rocker, “Summer of ‘69,″ in 1985, but he lost a lot of rock credibility with 1991′s “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You.” It was a global #1 hit, but many critics at the time thought it was cheesy as hell (it was).

That six or seven year span tracked his rise and his peak, but it was downhill from there. In 1998, Adams released his eighth album, On a Day Like Today, which failed commercially in the US, but did much better in the UK. And I think I know why: the title track really sounds like he’s trying to ride the Britpop wave. It has mixtures of tambourines, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars, and also has those Oasis-like bursts of layered energy. 

But Britpop in the US was for those “alternative” MTV audiences (which is to say, not really all that alternative in the grand scheme of things), and that was not remotely Bryan Adams’ audience. The adult contemporary audiences had no exposure to Britpop either. And then there was the fact that Adams’ record contract got sold to Interscope, which was largely a hip hop label. So Adams suffered some neglect in that regard, too. 

It was no surprise to find out that “On a Day Like Today” was co-produced by a British man named Phil Thornalley, who happens to love using acoustic guitars in his pop productions (his biggest success was “Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia, followed by “Back Here” by BBMak). He never produced for a Britpop band, but this definitely sounds like an attempt at it. Lyrically, this song is completely vapid and totally bereft of any serious meaning. Filler at its finest. They could’ve used this song for that awful Kendall Jenner commercial that depicts Pepsi as the grand unifier of America’s various, hostile factions. 

And the video employs one of those math tricks that’s supposed to blow your mind, but it’s unimpressive, much like the song’s lyrics. If you get grey elephant, you won, and your reward is you get to see a grey elephant roaming city streets with Bryan Adams. But I got brown jackalope, so fuck me, I guess.
