History of Hacking
In our world that relies heavily on computers and the internet, the term ‘hacking’ has become quite common. When we hear it, we often think about cyberattacks, data breaches, and the urgent need to protect our online information. But what if we told you that hacking had more innocent beginnings, evolving from playful activities to the complex and sometimes corrupt things we see today? In this report exploration, we understand how hacking has transformed, starting from its harmless beginnings to the serious cybersecurity issue it has become in our modern times.
The Early Days: Innocent Pranks and Telephone Games
The interesting story of hacking begins long before computers were around, back in the late 1800s. During that time, Bell Telephone, one of the first telephone companies, employed a group of young people as telephone operators. Instead of just connecting calls as they were supposed to, these young operators liked to have some fun by disconnecting or sending calls to the wrong places, playing tricks on the people calling. These early activities can be thought of as the starting point of hacking. It's important to note that their intentions were not to do any harm.
Now, let's fast forward to the 1960s and go to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is where hacking started to take shape to find smart and quick solutions to make systems work better, rather than to damage them. During this time, hacking was all about being curious and wanting to figure out how systems worked and how to make them work even better.
The Start of Computer Hacking in the 1960s
The word ‘hacker’ didn't originally have anything to do with computers. Back in the 1960s at MIT, students were known as ‘hackers’ because they liked to tinker with things and figure out how they worked. This early use of the word eventually got connected with computers.
In the 1960s, computers were big machines kept in special rooms with controlled temperatures. They were mostly used by expert programmers. But a group of computer fans, often students from places like MIT, had a strong desire to understand how these big machines worked.
To make these computers do things faster, they came up with what they called "hacks" or clever tricks in programming. Sometimes, these hacks worked better than the original programs. One of the most important things that happened in the 1960s was the creation of UNIX, a set of rules for running computers that was open for anyone to use. It was developed by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson.
The 1970s: From Playful Pranks to Serious Business
The 1970s marked a significant shift in the world of hacking. It moved from being all about harmless tricks to becoming something more serious. In 1971, a big change happened when ‘phreaking’ was introduced by John Draper, who was lovingly known as ‘Captain Crunch.’ Draper invented a device called a ‘blue box’, which allowed him to make long-distance phone calls for free. This was the beginning of ‘phreaking’. Unlike modern hacking, which often has bad intentions, this early form of hacking was driven by a desire to learn and explore, not to cause harm.
Abbie Hoffman made ‘phreaking’ even more popular by publishing ‘The Youth International Party Line’ newsletter. This created a sense of community among hackers. In 1978, Randy Seuss and Ward Christiansen established the first personal computer bulletin board system (BBS). This BBS became a virtual meeting place for hackers and enthusiasts, setting the stage for the online communities we have today.
The 1980s: Hacking Comes into the Spotlight
The 1980s brought about significant changes in the world of hacking. The introduction of personal computers, such as IBM's ‘personal computers’, made computing power more accessible to regular people. Popular culture, including the movie ‘War Games’, warned us about the changing digital world. The shift from ARPANET to the Internet showed how important computer networks were becoming, and bulletin board systems became very popular.
However, as computers became more common, hacking activities also increased. Groups like ‘414’ in Milwaukee became famous for breaking into systems at places like Los Alamos Laboratories and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This time also saw the rise of hacking rivalries, especially between groups called LOD (Legion of Doom) and MOD (Masters of Deception), which led to the famous ‘Great Hacker War’.
During this period, the law began to catch up with hackers. In 1986, the United States introduced the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). This law showed that people were becoming more concerned about cybercrimes.
The 1990s: Legal Responses to Hacking
In the 1990s, hacking continued to change. Some well-known hackers like Kevin Mitnick became famous for what they did. In Europe, the Chaos Computer Club started, and they released the first issue of ‘2600: The Hacker Quarterly’.
During this time, there were more cyberattacks happening. In 1999, the Melissa virus caused big problems for businesses all over the world. In the late 1990s, the Stuxnet worm came about, and it's believed that a government might have been behind it, using it to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.
The 2000s: Hacking in the New Millennium
As we entered the 2000s, hacking continued to evolve as a significant threat. Hacking changed from being playful pranks to becoming a serious problem. In 1999, the Melissa Virus, which pretended to be a Word document, caused around $80 million in damages.
In 2000, a teenager known as ‘Mafiaboy’ successfully carried out DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. These attacks temporarily shut down major websites like CNN, Yahoo, and Amazon. In 2014, the U.S. government blamed Russian hackers for a breach of the White House's security, highlighting the growing trend of state-sponsored cyberattacks. Then, in 2017, the WannaCry ransomware attack affected 200,000 computers in 150 countries, showing how widespread and global cyber threats had become.
The Present and Future: Dealing with Modern Cyber Challenges
At this moment, hacking remains a significant threat. Hackers are using increasingly advanced methods, such as AI-powered social engineering attacks and targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Infiltrating extensive supply chains through smaller vendors, hacktivism intended to disrupt institutions, and state-sponsored attacks are all immediate concerns.
What Does the Future Hold for Hacking?
The path that hacking will take in the future is uncertain, but one thing is very clear: we need strong cybersecurity measures. To deal with the changing threats, people, organizations, and governments must do the following:
Be Cautious of AI-Powered Attacks: Hackers are getting ready to use AI for more convincing and personal social engineering tricks, so we need to be extra careful.
Protect Against Ransomware in the Cloud: As attacks on cloud systems increase, it's important to keep our data safe in the cloud.
Make IoT Systems Secure: With more and more IoT devices around, we must make sure they are safe from hackers.
Make Supply Chains Stronger: We need to stop hackers from taking advantage of weaknesses in supply chains, especially through smaller vendors.
Get Ready for Hacktivism and Attacks by Governments: Activist hackers and attacks sponsored by governments can mess up important systems, so we must be ready.
In conclusion, hacking has come a long way, from being a playful thing to a big global problem for cybersecurity. As technology keeps changing, we must be more serious about keeping things safe online.
To do this, people, organizations, and governments must use strong cybersecurity methods. They also need to keep learning about new threats and work with experts in cybersecurity.

Season finale of season 6/season 7 up to Fault, Elliot and Liv hang out after the cases to talk about them. They have nowhere else to go so they go to each other. It seems innocent enough. He always ends up at her place and they sit on her couch, beers in hand and they just talk.
Liv asks him about the marines after the two police officers who attack their wives.
He tells her how disgusting he felt while undercover with Ray Schenkel.
He comes over in the middle of the night after the 911 call, Olivia cries about it all.
Elliot tells her about her dad.
They talk about Fin and his relationship with his son. He tells her how he hopes he doesn’t do that to his kids.
Olivia spends a lot of time at his place after he’s shot because of that damn cast.
He tells her about Millie’s case, about her dedication to it and he tells her that she and Millie would probably get along.
They talk about what they would want if they were intubated with no brain activity.
He tells her that he’s worried about her after she puts what is essentially her entire life on the line for those girls.
They talk about Emma Boyd for a LONG time. What they really thought was happening. Was she really safe? Was her mother really sick?
She tells him that she almost wishes she could’ve taken Nathan. He doesn’t tell her that she only confirmed how great a mom she’s gonna be.
They talk about how scared they were when he was in the bank. Talk about how badass Melinda is.
Ella Christiansen makes them quiet. Makes her talk about how she doesn’t understand how women can just throw away their children, how some people would kill to be them. Makes him talk about how all he could think about was his own kids, about Maureen.
They talk about how twisted Tessa McKellen was. How she could not only do that to herself but manipulate her husband.
He tells her how he’s worried about Kathleen after Jennifer Durning.
They talk about addiction after Caroline Pereira. The role it has played in their lives.
She asks him if he ever feels like she oversteps her boundaries with his kids and he looks at her like she’s crazy. She tells him about Ken calling her and he tells her that if any of his kids trusted her enough to do the same thing that Ken did, he’d be proud of them because at least they knew they had someone else to reach out to if it wasn’t him or Kathy. Knows that she would tell him if it was something unsafe. Tells her that she’s important to his family, to his kids, to Kathy, to him.
And then he never comes over again.
