Missing White Woman
Check out this book on Goodreads: Missing White Woman https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/195820717-missing-white-woman
BOOK REVIEW: First time reading a book by Kellye Garrett but I know of her from the Crime Writers of Color podcast. Based on the title of the book, I thought it was going to be more focused on race and the issues that come into play whenever a white woman or girl goes missing in America and all of the attention those cases usually get versus a missing black woman or girl, but it was not, so for me, the title was a bit misleading. As for the actual story, it was good, although I feel like there were quite a few loose ends with some of the relationships that could have been tied together just a little bit better especially as the case began to come together to be solved along with some aspects that didn't make sense, like the main character being gone from her job for so long. Overall though, a great book with lots of modern influences like Instagram, etc. I'll definitely read another mystery novel by Garrett.

Mystery/Thriller Monday

Lena’s sister was a reality star. She dies, but, did she really die of an overdose? Or did someone kill her? And if someone did kill her, who? Lena is on the case, she wants to find out the truth about what happened to her sister. Of course, when she starts looking into her sister, she also starts finding secrets about her family too. Dark secrets.
It was a twisty story, and, the twists definitely made me keep turning the pages. The characters were all unique and interesting too. A really intensely fun read.

Help me, Booklr, you're my only hope!

Updated 5/10/23: I found yet another small stack and added it to the list.
These are all the BOTM books I own. The intent when I signed up for BOTM back in 2020 was to try and read out of my usual comfort zone of Urban Fantasy (and the occasional fantasy book). My success with this challenge has been minimal — I started a couple of these books but ultimately didn't finish them. It wasn't because the books were boring, however. I was enjoying the couple I started, but I just ended up falling out-of-the-mood to read them.
The biggest problem I'm facing is just where to start with this massive (and ever growing) stack. Every single one of these books sounds amazing and interesting to read, but... I don't where to start! So I'm turning to you, members of Booklr, to help me choose which of these books to read next! These are stacked in no particular order, but for anyone that's having difficulty with images loading or can't see the images, here is a list for you:
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo*
Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross
Outlawed by Anna North
A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight
The Only Survivors by Megan Miranda
The Dating Plan by Sara Desai
Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
Like A Sister by Kellye Garrett
The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson
The Verifiers by Jane Pek
The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James
The Survivors by Jane Harper
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
The Bodyguard by Katherine Center
Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn
The Family Game by Catherine Steadman
The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah
The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
Breathless by Amy McCulloch
Girl, Forgotten by Karin Slaughter
Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang
The London Séance Society by Sarah Penner
The Wilderwomen by Ruth Emmie Lang
Darling Girl by Liz Michalski
The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz
The Last Word by Taylor Adams
The Last Flight by Julie Clark
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian
*This copy of Ninth House is not a BOTM book, I included it in the stack because it's the first in a series.

Cozy Wednesday featuring There's No Murder Like Show Murder (Backstage Mystery) by M. S. Greene #Review / #Giveaway @matthew.uai
Welcome to Cozy Wednesday! I am happy to share my thoughts today about There's No Murder Like Show Murder by M. S. Greene! There's No Murder Like Show Murder (Backstage Mystery) Cozy Mystery 1st in Series Setting - Connecticut Publisher : Crooked Lane Books (July 23, 2024) Hardcover : 288 pages ISBN-10 : 163910819X ISBN-13 : 978-1639108190 Kindle ASIN : B0CLN7KC9L Audiobook ASIN B0CVJV29P7 Tasha Weaver has seen her fair share of divas come and go while working as the costume shop head at the Eastbrook Playhouse, but her beloved theater is put at risk when the star of the show is killed in this fun but deadly debut, perfect for fans of Ellery Adams and Kellye Garrett. Tasha Weaver is most at home in the cozy backstage world of the Eastbrook Playhouse. As the costume shop head at the charming regional theater, she’s used to watching dramatic acts of love and revenge from the shadows. But when Kurt Mozer—the insufferable Broadway reject who stars in their production of Annie Get Your Gun—is shot center stage, the spotlight turns to her. Everyone knows Kurt was difficult to work with, and after he got into a fight with both director Marion Mason and artistic leader Arthur Winston, he promptly decided to quit the show. In deep financial trouble, the Eastbrook Playhouse depended on a big name like Kurt to keep afloat. With reporters coming in from the Big Apple to Tasha’s little corner of Connecticut, she realizes it's up to her to save their local theater and keep her community safe. After all, the show must go on…but what do you do when the killer could very well be one of your loved ones? With the help of her friends, her long-time crush Bruno Machado, and her feline colleague Hilly, Tasha must catch a murderer before the shining lights of the playhouse go out forever. Dollycas's Thoughts Tasha Weaver grew up working at the Eastbrook Playhouse selling tickets and handing out playbills, now she is head of the costume shop. The current production is Annie Get Your Gun and everyone has high hopes that bringing in former Broadway star Kurt Mozer will bring in the much-needed dollars for the fledging playhouse. But Kurt is not easy to work with. He has tons of complaints. He gets in fights with the artistic leader Arthur Winston and director Marion Mason. Disagreements so fierce Kurt decides to quit the show. Tasha thought she had talked him into staying but before he could make his intention known he was shot at center stage. The man's death brings in the press from New York which is not good for the playhouse. Tasha takes it upon herself to save her beloved theatre and catch the killer fearing it is someone close to her. No matter what, the show must go on so with a little help from the technical director and her long-time crush Bruno Machado, and assistance from a frisky feline Hilly, Tasha is determined to bring the killer down before the curtains go up. ______ Mr. Greene had the huge task of introducing a large cast of characters and making each unique and memorable as the story continued. It takes a lot of people to put on a theatre performance, on stage, behind the curtains, out front, and in the office. I had trouble keeping some of the characters straight at first, but they became clear as I kept reading. Tasha grows so much from the beginning to the end of this book. She has a great backstory and is connected to all the characters in meaningful ways. The characters all have plenty of room for growth as the series continues. The problem with the first book in a series, especially those with an abundance of characters, is having the time and pages to develop a complex mystery. There were some well-placed red herrings but I pinned down the guilty party early in the book. I did enjoy following Tasha as she tried to sleuth out the killer and her surprise A-ha moment. I was delighted by the playhouse theatre theme and observing all that takes place behind the scenes. It is clear that Mr. Greene is a "theatre nerd" and is writing what he knows and is passionate about. There's No Murder Like Show Murder has given the Backstage Mystery Series a good start with a strong foundation to build on in future stories. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC. Your Escape Into A Good Book Travel Agent About the Author M. S. Greene is a playwright, lyricist, screenwriter, novelist, and overall theatre nerd living the dream in New York City. GoodReads Synopsis:
When the body of disgraced reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her 25th birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose. It’s a tragedy, certainly, but not a crime.
But Desiree’s half-sister Lena Scott knows that can’t be the case. A graduate student at Columbia, Lena has spent the past decade forging her own path far from the spotlight, but some facts about Desiree just couldn’t have changed since their childhood. And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street. So why is no one listening to her?
My Review:
Very slow to the draw. 90% of the story is played out very slowly and doesn't pick up until the last chapter. While I didn't expect it to be fast-paced all the way through, most of it was very lackluster. Let me back up.
Instagram model/influencer, Desiree Pierce is found dead of a drug overdose but her sister, Lena immediately suspects foul play.
I've said it before in other reviews, cops in these stories are so useless and it infuriates me that they are always written this way. Case in point: see The Perfect Marriage. Detective Green and Detective Zizza were imbeciles.
Over the course of about 10 days, Lena is turning over every leaf and following every lead, to figure out what happened to her sister -- something that should be the NYPD's job. Of course, she is met with many roadblocks; her father is unhelpful and almost comes off as a suspect, there is an old family friend who is mixed up in Desiree's life, a new "best friend" who isn't who she says she is, and a pesky reporter who flirts with Lena at all the wrong times.
There are enough characters in this story to keep you guessing. However, the final climax left much to be desired for me -- it was very anticlimactic.
Aunt E was the scene stealer! I'd love to read a story about her and Gram.
Final thoughts, it was an easy read and despite my best efforts, I was unable to predict the ending for that alone, it gets an extra star! I'm usually pretty good at pegging the "suspect" early.
