Women Type Designers: GUDRUN ZAPF VON HESSE
One of the great women type designers of the 20th and early 21st centuries was the German designer, calligrapher, and book binder Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse, who died in 2019 at the age of 101. Von Hesse’s several noted typefaces stem directly from her practice of calligraphy. She believed that all good type design required the “human touch” and that a mastery of calligraphy was essential to becoming a good type designer.
Initially, von Hesse’s calligraphy practice was largely self-taught, learning from the same books by Rudolf Koch and Edward Johnston used by her future husband, the prolific German calligrapher and type designer Hermann Zapf. In 1941, after receiving her Masters degree in book binding, she began a formal course of study with the calligrapher and painter Johannes Boehland in Berlin. Afterward, she worked as a professional bookbinder, calligrapher, and educator when the D. Stempel AG Type Foundry scooped her up in the late 1940s for her design work, issuing her first typeface Diotima in 1951. She went on to design a dozen distinctive typefaces in her career for Stempel, Berthold, URW Hamburg, and Bitstream. In 1991, she became the second woman (but not the last) to win the Frederic W. Goudy Award, and in 2018, in honor of her 100th birthday, the Monotype Corporation released the typeface Hesse-Antiqua, which is based on an alphabet she designed in the late 1940s.

I was tagged by @tattooedsiren and @sal-si-puedes to post my 15 favorite songs ...
I’m a bit menstrual and very emotional LOL ... I have over 4,000 songs on my iTunes so ... I have a lot to pick from. But for right now ... in no particular order, have some songs LOL
One More Light - Linkin Park. I just discovered this song a couple of weeks ago and heard it on the radio (the only time I’ve heard it on the radio) and it just completely moved me ...
Wait for It - Hamilton Soundtrack. “I am the one thing in life I can control.” “Death doesn’t discriminate.” This song resonated with me from the first time I heard it and every time it comes on I’m MOVED
See You Again - Elle King. This song inspired a Teen Wolf fic for me LOL ... but besides that, it’s hauntingly simple, yet so beautiful.
Down With the Ship - Enter the Haggis. I’m not gonna stand on the end of the pier, I’m not gonna let you go down with the ship. Raise up your anchor, it’s time to set sail. And I’m not gonna let you go down. Just ... it’s life affirming for me and lifts my spirit.
The Great Escape - P!nk. “Terrified of the dark, but not if you go with me. And I don’t need a pill to make me numb. And I wrote the book on running, but that chapter of my life will soon be done.” Another song that just ... lifts me.
Smoke a Little Smoke - Eric Church. This is just a fucking good damn song. I mean, just ... yes. Awesome song.
Ain’t Dead Yet - Rex Goudie. There’s a simplistic beauty to this song. And it just makes me smile.
Fever - Peggy Lee. I love Peggy Lee’s voice and this song is .. Yes. All the YES.
Take 5 - Dave Brubeck. Give me good jazz anytime. This piece of music is astounding.
A Love That Will Last - Renee Olstead. Okay, I first heard it in Princess Diaries 2 with Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine. But it is one of my favorite love songs.
Love Me Tender - Elvis Presley. Another one of my favorite love songs, like OMG.
Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran. Yes, another love song. This one just makes me smile and gives me all the OTP feels ...
Piece by Piece (Idol Version) - Kelly Clarkson. This version of the song just ... wow. I honestly have no words for how beautiful it is.
Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen. I mean, I love everything Queen has done, but ... yeah. This one is amazing.
Coming Down - Halsey. This song gives me all the Stucky feels. And I honestly love all of Halsey’s music (seeing her in concert in November) and ... this song. Yes.
I always love discovering new music, so if you want to share your fave songs, consider yourself tagged. <3

Failed delivery: How the cities that missed out on Amazon’s HQ2 are coping
(Composite by Kerry Barger for The Real Deal)
The cities that fought until the last minute to win over Amazon are now moving on — some joyfully, some begrudgingly.
Before the news leaked that New York and Crystal City, Virginia, were Amazon’s top headquarters picks, five other cities also seemed poised to nab the golden ticket. Amazon representatives reportedly revisited Chicago, Miami and Newark in late October. Texas appeared a viable contender with sources in early November telling outlets that the company was in advanced talks with both Dallas and Austin.
Some officials and developers in those cities lament the loss; some are downright puzzled. And others are just grateful they had a chance. Here’s how the HQ2 rejects are coping:
Chicago
(Credit: iStock)
The Midwest City’s public and private leaders presented Amazon with 10 proposals for its second headquarters — among them Related Midwest’s The 78, Sterling Bay’s 53-acre project Lincoln Yards and Farpoint Development’s 100-acre campus known as Burnham Lakefront.
But now, those near-winners are already predicting Chicago will lure other corporate relocations instead.
Related Midwest CEO Curt Bailey said in a statement on Tuesday that prospective tenants, including “major corporations, cultural institutions and retailers,” have shown interest in its $7 billion megaproject (which received its first city approval Thursday).
The 78 did come close, though. “What I would take from that exercise is that of 238 municipalities, you probably had close to 1,000 sites combined, and we were top five,” Bailey said in a later interview with The Real Deal. “That makes me feel pretty good about our prospects moving forward on The 78 for other companies.”
Sterling Bay — which planned 6 million square feet of commercial space at its Lincoln Yards site — is also putting Amazon in its rearview mirror. In fact, the developer claims it doesn’t expect to have any trouble filling the it planned for the project now that the Seattle-based e-commerce behemoth is out.
Spokeswoman Julie Goudie said in a statement said that “Sterling Bay is moving full steam ahead” with its initial plans.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel refused to say what Amazon executives told him about why they passed on Chicago, but said losing is part of playing the game.
“If you compete, you have the opportunity to win, and you also have the opportunity to not be successful. That said, Chicago has won more than it has lost.”
Dallas
(Credit: iStock)
Following the official announcement that Amazon would split its new headquarters between New York and Virginia, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings admitted during a press conference that officials had been willing to let Amazon “change the whole direction of the city.” He also added that the two coastal, northeastern cities, seemed to be to more “than what I thought Amazon wanted to pay.”
Developers whose sites made it to the final inning did say they hedged their bets.
Jim Reynolds, senior vice president of development and construction at a West Dallas Investments company, said that “there are specific companies that we know are on the sidelines.”
Reynolds’ company presented Amazon with Trinity Groves, an 80-acre assemblage that West Dallas Investments had cobbled together over the past 15 years. There, the company planned a 9 million-square-foot megaproject. But now that the decision is final, Reynolds said his firm is “anxious” to get a move on.
Meanwhile, other local developers like Cienda Partners, which had its 50-acre project Oak Cliff also listed as a potential site for Amazon, weren’t paying much attention to “the Amazon hoopla,” as Cienda’s managing partner Philip Wise put it.
“We hadn’t paid a lot of attention to Amazon quite frankly with so many people in this competition,” he said.
Miami
(Credit: iStock)
Amazon had a slew of potential sites to pick from across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Perhaps one of the most iconic was the $2 billion, 27-acre megaproject, Miami Worldcenter. The developer was reportedly ready to carve out up to 10 acres of the project for Amazon.
The development’s managing principal Nitin Motwani declined to comment on the status of the project in relation to the Amazon proposal, citing a NDA, but noted that the company has “active conversations going with a variety of people” for the land that was available for Amazon.Though HQ2 “would have been a catalyst,” according to Suarez, he doesn’t see the loss as a setback. Miami will keep looking for a “big tech tenant.” The mayor says he’ll continue to promote the city to potential contenders like Google and Spotify — the latter of which he said has been in “on-and-off” talks with the city.
“I don’t think it slows down Miami one iota,” he said.
Kelly Smallridge, the president and CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, said the year-long process laid the groundwork for similar bids between counties in the future and said “there’s no hard feelings.”
She described the process of the year-long competition — which has been called a “Hunger Games”-style death match — as “standard.”
“Projects a tenth of the size take three years to make the decision … they stuck to the timeframe they put forward,” she said. “They handled it very well and very quickly.”
Smallridge declined to comment on how the loss of HQ2 would impact any of the sites that were listed as part of South Florida’s proposal, though she contested the sentiment that other large corporations could step in and fill up the large developments.
“We would basically have had to create a city for Amazon,” she said. “There aren’t people in the wings to take 5 million square feet … that just doesn’t happen.”
Newark
(Credit: iStock)
At worst, Newark’s run for Amazon’s HQ2 was an exercise in self-promotion.
“I feel like we just worked on our largest class project ever,” said Aisha Glover, CEO of Newark Community Economic Development Corporation, who worked alongside Mayor Ras Baraka to put together the city’s bid. “No one expected us to land on the list anyway.”
Though Glover says the city’s pipeline of new development has been growing steadily for at least four years, she said there’s been a “significant uptick in interest” since Newark made Amazon’s 20-city shortlist in January. It was “an immediate change in the winds,” according to her, though developers are less enthusiastic.
“Listen, it was always a very long shot that Newark would win,” said residential developer Ron Beit of RBH Group. The company’s SoMa Master Plan project was listed in Newark’s bid. “I think Amazon made a mistake,” he said, but, in the same breadth, he noted developers “were all very sober about it.”
The long-standing relationship with Audible, which was acquired by Amazon in 2008 and is based in the city, made some, like Beit, think “we had a chance,” but “no one was sort of underwriting that in their expectations.”
Commercial developer Ben Korman, chairman and CEO Lotus Equity Group and co-founder of C&K Properties with Meir Cohen, had two of his developments included in Newark’s bid and, hours after Amazon’s announcement, even he admitted that “I don’t think [losing HQ2] means a whole lot.”
That said, Korman said the amount of positive press for the city did go a long way in minting a new reputation that developers like him have been trying to sell for years.
“Newark,” he said, “is definitely a player now.”
Korman described the growth of the city as being “more organic” without HQ2 in the mix, but said his work felt no effect from Amazon’s opting for NYC over the Garden State city.
“To be honest, we tried to help, but we were not invested in any way. There’s not much for me to add. A lot will be said about this process, but I’m not the one to say it,” he said.
Additional reporting by Katherine Kallergis and Keith Larsen.

New world news from Time: Here’s How a Few Clever New Zealanders Evaded an Alcohol Ban on New Year’s Eve
A group of New Year’s celebrants in New Zealand employed some creative thinking — and a little heavy lifting — to evade a drinking ban on public holidays.
Merrymakers in the town of Tairua on New Zealands Coromandel peninsula built a sandbar — topped with a picnic table and an icebox full of illicit refreshments — in the middle of the estuary to ring in the New Year, the New Zealand Herald reports. The group reportedly claimed they were “in international waters” and not subject to a municipal drinking ban.
“We thought it would be a good laugh and the drinking ban would be a grey area if we were on our own island,” organizer Leon Hayward tells TIME. He and five friends, including three visiting Americans, built the platform using a combination of black sand and sea shells. Hayward said it took six hours to complete, and was finished off with wooden planks to help distribute the drinkers’ weight.
Thames-Coromandel Mayor Sandra Goudie told TIME that “locals and visitors alike” were amused, and commended the group’s “creativity” and innovative spirit.
“Everybody was quite entertained by it; it wasn’t hurting anybody. They were trying to claim it was in international waters but, of course, it isn’t,” Goudie told TIME. “They had this creation, that that’s what we like to see – a bit of creative and innovative activity over the summer period.”
Public drinking has been banned in Coromandel on public holidays and between between Dec. 23 and Jan. 6, since 2003, with violators facing a possible fine of $180 or arrest, the BBC reports. Recent years have seen a rash of arrests and of violent episodes at the seaside community, a popular holiday destination. This year the town of Whangamata held an alcohol-free beach party.
It seems unlikely that Tairua’s rogue revelers will face legal consequences. Waikato eastern area commander Inspector John Kelly said the impromptu island was a show of creative thinking. According to Stuff New Zealand, had the official known about the plan he “probably would have joined them.”

Welcome to “8 Questions with…..”
One of the coolest things about reviewing films is discovering new faces that you have never seen before. Be it behind the camera like Paul Raschid,Aislinn Clarke or Liam Gavin or in front of it like Brittany Ashworth,Mike Ferguson or our next guest, the charming and delightful Kelly Goudie. I recently reviewed “The Baylock Residence” and noted that while the film wasn’t that strong, the performances of Kelly and her co-star Sarah Wynne Kordas were outstanding. I knew I wanted to interview Kelly but I also knew I hadn’t written the best review so I was a bit nervious when I made contact with Kelly. I was very upfront with who I was and told her about the review before I asked her if we could chat. Not only was Kelly very gracious and understanding, she also said yes to being interviewed as well. I’m so happy because I really think she is a strong actress and has what it takes to move to the next level. She is a bright, energetic, fearless and straight talking while also having one of the most charming voices I have heard in a long time. As you can tell,I’m pretty happy to introduce Kelly to you all here…so I’m going to quit babbling and start asking some questions!!!
Please introduce yourself and tell about your current project.
Hi, my name is Kelly Goudie and I played Patrica Woodhouse in The Baylock Residence. The Baylock Residence is a low budget and by low budget I mean no budget horror film. It’s set at the end of 1940s and has a paranormal mystery vibe.
When you did you know you wanted to be an actress? How did you start your journey?
For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to act. I was a bit of a lone wolf as a child, so I spend a lot of time making up stories and pretending to be different people. Like most people, my first ever performance was a school play (Noah’s Arc and my role was ‘Zebra 2’) Originally I didn’t even have a speaking part as the youngest kids where always just part of the ensemble cast, I begged my teacher for a line, eventually she cracked and after that I had the performance bug! I knew I just wanted to act. I think if I’m completely honest, I was kind of a sad kid. So drama was a way to express how I was feeling when I wasn’t brave enough to do it as myself.
What steps do you in becoming your character?
This really depends on the role, obviously knowing the text inside out is a good place to start knowing what relationships your character has with others. I try and box away as much of myself as possible. I spend a lot of time alone figuring what’s my motivation. I use method techniques too whilst on set so if our characters hate each other I will avoid you like the plague.
What are you strengths as an actress? What areas do you feel you need more experience?
I love submerging myself in a character and really throwing myself into a role. I love taking on demanding roles which usually leave me feeling pretty drained. It’s hard because if your playing an intense role, your mind knows that you are just playing a character but your body goes through all the stress and motions. I would like to get better at keeping myself safe emotionally whilst taking on those characters.
Your first two films have been in horror…..so,what scares you?
Good question! When I was younger everything scared me. I was so easily triggered, seriously! Even Cruella Deville from 101 Dalmatians was terrifying to me. Now, thankfully I’m braver! I’m a bit of a horror movie freak, it takes a lot to scare me. I love gore. My absolute favourite is French gore horror. But what really scares me is when I have sleep paralysis. I go through spells of having this and I always have home invasion dreams- they are horrific.
What roles do you want to tackle next? Can you see yourself as a leading lady in a romantic-comedy?
I love comedy- that’s actually my safe space so I would love to do more of that! I would love to be the leading lady- especially as I think female roles have changed a lot in the past few years and have become more realistic and showing women as strong humans, we aren’t just sat around waiting to be saved anymore. I really want to do something gritty. Maybe a crime drama? Like Luther? I love binge watching those kind of dark shows, something that you can really sink your teeth into so if I was cast in one if those that would be amazing!
What was the experience like shooting “The Baylock Experience”? What was it like seeing yourself on the cover of the DVD?
We filmed the main bulk of the film in about 2 weeks. Lots of early starts and late finishs. The house was freezing as it had been sitting empty for years and was due to be knocked down after we had filmed. There was definitely a strange feeling in the house, nobody really liked being left in any rooms alone. It was such a learning experience for us all, having no budget we had to cheat a few bits and come up with interesting ways to film things. Seeing my face on the DVD cover was really something! On low budget films distributors tend to use their own images on the cover as there are no big names to sell the film so I was really proud to see little old me on the cover!
Is there a supportive indie film community in the UK? Have you ever had to work with someone who was struggling with their lines and if so,how do you help them?
I think like in any field, there are those who are supportive and those who are not. I think you have to chose who to listen to.
I have worked with people who have really struggled with lines- on those situations its all about taking the pressure off them, if your in front of the camera you are able to cut, then just have them take a few minutes to gather their thoughts and start again. Its happened on stage too when an actor has forgotten their lines and you see that look of panic flash through their eyes. But it’s ok, if you know your characters motives well enough you will get through it, they are what hold the text together.
With a growing career and being engaged (congratulations!),how do you handle balancing your personal life with your professional one?
Thank you! I’ll be honest it’s a struggle! Myself and my partner both work hard in our respective fields and we understand that sometimes our work may take the lead. We both fully support each other which makes it easy. He knows how much acting means to me and he pushes me to be the best version of myself both in my work and personal life. He’s a good one.
(photograph by Austen Blakemore Photography)
Would you like to perform live theater in the future?
YES! Live performance in my opinion is the best. The whole experience of it. There is nothing like performing live being part of dimensional experience. Being able to invoke feelings and feed off of that energy just helps create a more emotive performance I think.
How do you handle it if a part you have auditioned for doesn’t go your way?
I move on, in this industry and actually just life in general you have to have a thick skin. It’s hard getting knocked back but you can’t just stay on the ground. Sure, I allow myself to feel sad about it if I need to, but then it’s time to put my big girl pants on and try again.
Are there any roles you would refuse to do if the subject matter bothered you?
There are things I struggle to watch but I think if they are vital to the story and where portrayed in an honest manner then I would do them but sometimes I think things are included unnecessarily for shock value. As long as its authentic then I’m down.
The cheetah and I are flying over to watch your latest film but we are a day early and now you are playing tour guide, what are we doing?
I’ll be honest if you come to mine we’re sitting in our pyjamas watching films on the sofa whilst eating cheese. But since you’ve come all the way from America I guess we should leave the house! You can’t come to Nottingham without going to the Major Oak and a walk around Sherwood Forest, the home of Robin Hood! We will go to the pub on the way home and have a huge Sunday roast and then end the evening binge watching some of those gritty crime dramas that I want to be in!
I like to thank Kelly for taking the time to chat with me here. She is quite a peach and I really feel her roles are only going to get better and better. This is why I love doing this interview series because this is where is you are going to hear about the next big thing!! You can follow Kelly through her various social media sites and see what she is doing next:
You can follow Kelly on her InstaGram page. She also has a channel on YouTube which I highly recommend. She is starting to post new videos now. Kelly has a Spotlight page as well. She also has a IMDb page.
I also like to give a special shout out to Austen Blakemore who took that incredible Red Riding Hood shot. I would tell any actors who are in need of headshots and other pictures, you really need to look him up. You can find Austen at his website Austen Blakemore Photography.
As always, thank you for your continued support and please feel free to drop a comment below!! 8 Questions with…………actress Kelly Goudie Its 12:09 am dark Welcome to "8 Questions with....." One of the coolest things about reviewing films is discovering new faces that you have never seen before.
