Just like a small question based on that one ask, but... might the lack of brown/black men in popular M/M ships have to do with people trying really hard not to be racist so they just... never feature black/brown men? Because I know several F/F ships with brown/black women, but I can't remember a single M/M or even M/F with a black/brown male love interest... well, maybe Link/Gan or Zelda/Gan? But besides that one... nothing rings a notable bell.

If we're talking about AO3, Link/Gan has 785 works. Finnpoe has 8,636. Sam/Bucky has 10,591. Do you just not watch live action media?

Part of it is "I don't know. I just don't find them hot for some reason..."-style racism. That can shift with time and exposure but there's no instant fix even if someone is interested in changing their own tastes.

Part of it is being instantly screamed at and held to higher standards. (And yes, no matter how much people want to whine and say this isn't true, it is true, and anyone who goes ahead and writes despite the haters will tell you so.)

Part of it is fear of messing up above and beyond fear of reactions. Personally, I think this is toxic white guilt-flavor time-wasting and it's better to try and fail than not try, but it's a massive factor in what some people choose to write.

A lot of it is simply the composition of the mega-franchises that tend to generate the ships with bajillions of works. If we're looking at AO3 circles, the biggest f/f ships are not that big. If you look at m/m ships of the same size, there are some with some guy who is not white and not a pale-skinned Asian.

Only here are we finally getting down to the range where a lot of the big f/f ships on AO3 hang out, and here's Sam/Bucky, which is frankly not a small pairing at all unless you only mean in comparison to Stucky.

I'll stop there for m/m since these numbers are getting pretty distorted by me filtering out everything higher up, but you get the idea. Even that wretched Old Guard fandom couldn't completely kill off its ship, though then we get into how you're defining your terms and how much actual skin tone matters.

I don't see anything particularly significant until we get further down the listings, but there are definitely smaller fandoms like Leverage where everybody loves and ships the black guy.

I mean, yes, clearly, media does have a bias against darker skin, and the darker the skin, the bigger the bias. This bias may be exacerbated by fandom, but in a lot of cases, it just seems to be replicated at about the same level.

That pattern notwithstanding, it seems like you just haven't heard of a lot of ships.

The summer semester is ending and the prep for fall has started. It’s only a few short weeks until the 2019-2020 academic year begins. We’ll have a full cohort of students back on campus. The lines for coffee will be never ending and a free parking space will be nowhere to be found. Life will definitely get more exciting.

 Libraries staff has pulled together a full list of books that cover a whole range of areas. Some books are for our graduating students wondering what comes next. Some books are to help new incoming students start the year successfully. We even have books that staff read when they were your age (yep, books existed that long ago) that changed how they thought about the world.

Hello Dickinson family and welcome to A Minute with Mitzel.

In the early years of Dickinson State homecoming, the president of the University rode a horse in the parade. I wish to thank the agriculture and technical studies department and the rodeo program for helping me prepare to ride a horse for the Homecoming parade this year. It had been 25 years since I last sat astride one of these beautiful animals. It was an honor to recreate this tradition as part of this Centennial celebration.

Speaking of rodeo, I am delighted to acknowledge the Dale and Barbara Jorgenson Family Rodeo Endowment Scholarship, which was established by their family. The Jorgensons were lifetime supporters of rodeo, and Dale’s resume of championships earned him an induction to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002. It is this type of student support, through scholarships, that helps DSU continue to attract such an amazing student body.

DSU has put together an exploratory committee to determine how best to replace the practice arena that was moved to make space for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. With the move of the library to Medora, replacement of the practice arena will ensure that our agriculture program is able to teach the full array of courses in an efficient manner while also allowing ample space for rodeo practice. I urge you to attend the annual Cowboys and Candlelight gathering on November 3rd to learn more about this project, and show your support for the DSU Department of Agriculture and Technical Studies.

Dickinson State University is always proud to provide a cultural opportunity for the community by hosting different events and activities.

Manhu, a group of musical performers from China, visiting Dickinson as part of the WorldFest tour, was featured this past week. The group visited many of the local schools conducting workshops and performances. Their main show was held this past Saturday in Beck Auditorium at DSU.

Dr. Ken Haught will be directing the upcoming play titled “As You Like It,” Shakespeare’s most beguiling comedy, mixing humor with love, conflict, and much more. The play will run from October 25th to October 28th and show times may be found at www.dsuarts.com.

Those of you visiting downtown Dickinson may have noticed the new mural being painted on the route 22 underpass. The project is being sponsored by the City of Dickinson. Marilyn Lee, DSU’s Associate Provost and Dean of Instruction, is leading the volunteer aspect of the project. The mural is beautiful, and volunteers are still welcome if you are so inclined.

On our DSU campus, the Nursing Student Association is hosting “Break the Cycle” from October 25th through the 26th. The event is designed to help raise awareness of domestic violence and aid Dickinson’s Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center.

Assistant Director of Housing and Dining Services, Keith James, helped bring a thought-provoking exhibit to campus as part of an effort to end the stigmas associated with sexual assault. The “What Were You Wearing?” Survivor Art Installation will be housed in room 112 on the main floor of the Student Center and open October 22nd through the 26th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

There are many positive activities occurring at DSU spanning the academic, social, and athletic arenas. We wish to continue reaching out to the community and offering extremely strong educational experiences to our students. If you know of someone who would enjoy the vibrant opportunities at Dickinson State, we invite you to encourage them to attend a prospective student event, the next of which is an open house on November 9th.

The Linsly School Celebrates 210th Commencement 

The Linsly School held its 210th Commencement on Sunday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. at the Stifel Field House, graduating eighty-eight seniors from the Class of 2024. These graduates will matriculate into 42 different colleges and universities  in 17 different states, and 6 different countries. During the commencement ceremony, several graduates were presented awards in recognition of their outstanding qualities in leadership, citizenship, and character. Brooklynn Wayt, daughter of Drs. Michael and Heather Wayt of Wheeling, was named Valedictorian of the Senior Class of 2024 for having the highest upper school cumulative grade point average in the senior class. She will attend Miami of Ohio in the fall.  Katherine Kastelic, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Kastelic of Washington, PA, was named Salutatorian of the Senior Class of 2024 for having the second highest upper school cumulative grade point average in the senior class. She will attend Denison University in the fall. The Head of School Award, given to those members of the senior class who, in the opinion of the faculty and Head of School, through his and her display of leadership, academic excellence, and willingness to serve, acted as a model for all Linsly students, was presented to Cole Bloomfield, son of Ms. Debbie Stanton of Wheeling and Mr. Keith Bloomfield of Wheeling and Emily Klempa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justin J. Klempa of Bridgeport, Ohio. Bloomfield will attend Virginia Tech and Klempa will attend The Ohio State University in the fall. The Hofreuter Award, given to that member of the senior class who has been exemplary in her service to the school and community, in the tradition of the late Dr. Donald H. Hofreuter, Linsly Cadet Major, community leader and longtime Chairman of Linsly’s Board of Trustees, was awarded to Brooklynn Wayt. The Guenther Award, given to those members of the senior class who, in the opinion of the faculty and Head of School, exhibit outstanding leadership, citizenship and character, given in memory of former Linsly student David Guenther, was awarded to Alex Taylor, son of Mr. James Taylor and Dr. Heather Taylor of Wheeling and Brooklynn Wayt. Taylor will attend Ohio University in the fall. The Theodore Scott Owens Award, given to those members of the senior class who, in the opinion of the faculty and Head of School, exhibit the qualities of determination, seriousness, and persistence respected by all, given in memory of former Linsly student Theodore Scott Owens, was awarded to Jack Selmon, son of Mr. Daniel Selmon and Judge Julie Selmon of Woodsfield, Ohio and Rachel Edinger, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Edinger of Wheeling. Selmon will attend Wheeling University and Edinger will attend West Virginia University in the fall. The Albert and Martin Buncher Award, given to those resident students, who in the opinion of the Dormitory Masters, Resident Faculty, and Head of School, exemplify that which is looked for in every boarding student, given in memory of the late Albert Buncher, father of Martin Buncher, former Linsly student, was awarded to Roi Gerson, son of Mr. Oren Gerson and Ms. Sharon Gerson of Rehovot, Israel; Rosa Sohlberg, daughter of Mr. Tomi V. Sohlberg and Mrs. Tarja J. Jalli of Helsinki, Finland; and Neri Weiner, son of Mr. Ronen Weiner and Mrs. Rivka Weiner of Qidron, Israel. A program continued by President Biden known as the “President’s Education Awards” is intended to recognize students who have attained a high level of academic achievement while pursuing a solid core of academic courses. Receiving this award were members of Linsly’s National Honor Society: Caitlin Bedway, Cole Bloomfield, Helen Bossart, Katherine Carson, Brady Childers, Alayna Cook, Rachel Edinger, Gianna Ferrelli, Alexa Finley, Peyton Florence, Agustin Liu, Ava Gainer, Matthew George, Whitney Haught, Asher Higham, Payton Hill, Sarah-Catherine Jackson, John Paul Jones, Katherine Kastelic, Emily Klempa, Riley Maroney, Sophia Monk, Anna Norman, Wesley Palmer, Angelia Recrosio, Jack Selmon, Nathen Smith, Rosa Sohlberg, Alexander Taylor, Madison Taylor, Alyssa Tomlinson, Thomas Turak, Jonah Vaysbakh, Brooklynn Wayt and Dillon Wilson. This year’s recipient was  Thomas Turak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Turak of Wheeling. Turak will attend Vanderbilt University in the fall. The Linsly Mathematics Award, given to that member of the Senior Class who, determined by the Mathematics Department has attained the highest cumulative average in that discipline during his Upper School career at Linsly was awarded to Nathen Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Smith of Glen Dale. Smith will attend The Ohio State University in the fall.  Katherine Kastelic was named the recipient of The Gilleland Award, established in memory of Professor Brady Gilleland, recognizing a graduating senior who studied Latin and succeeded in her study.  Brooklynn Wayt was named the recipient of The Linsly Science Award given to that member of the Senior Class who has attained the highest cumulative average in that discipline during her Upper School career at Linsly.  The recipients of The Max W. Laborde Award,given to those Senior English students who, in the opinion of the English Department, best met the standards set forth in the department were  Katherine Kastelic and Brooklynn Wayt. The John Anwar Spanish Award is given in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Anwar’s eldest son, John, who passed away in 1991 when he was a senior at Linsly. This award recognizes the graduating senior who, through consistent dedication and hard work, has distinguished herself in the study of Spanish. Receiving the John Anwar Spanish Award was Alyssa Tomlinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark E. Tomlinson of Powhatan Point, Ohio. Tomlinson will attend Marietta College in the fall. The Robert W. Schramm Physics Award, given to that member of the senior class who has attained the highest average in Physics, was Brooklynn Wayt. Among the Linsly graduates of the Class of 2024, thirteen members of the Class of 2024 began their careers at Linsly in the fifth grade, completing grades five through twelve at The Linsly School.  Those graduates, also known as “Linsly Lifers,” are: Nate Berhalter, Cole Bloomfield, Katherine Carson, Brady Childers, Nico Giovengo, John Paul Jones, Riley Maroney, Anna Norman, Jack Selmon, Madison Taylor, Mikey Troullos, Thomas Turak and Brooklynn Wayt. He recognized the numerous accomplishments of the Class of 2024, recalling their many academic and athletic accomplishments including being named a Presidential Scholar Candidate, AP Scholars, winning OVAC Championships and serving their community through volunteer work.  Mr. Gary Glessner, Linsly Class of 1985 and Chairman of the Linsly Board of Trustees, also addressed the graduates, welcoming them as the newest members of Linsly alumni.  The Linsly School, located in Wheeling, WV., was founded in 1814 and is the oldest school of its kind west of the Allegheny Mountains. Linsly is a college preparatory school serving both young men and women in grades five through twelve for both boarding and day students. The school is accredited by The Independent Schools Association of the Central States.
