When Dutton's Marry, They Go Big
Tumblr media
Request from wattpad mackleann - Kayce and the reader come back from their honeymoon and the bunkhouse crew talk about how amazing the wedding was ( huge wedding 😏 )
"There's nothing that says we have to go back today. We could just stay out here." Kayce had his arms wrapped around me from behind while I was trying to put my shirt on.
Kayce and I had recently got married a few weeks ago. And we had been spending our honeymoon here at the Dutton Summer Camp. I giggled trying to not cave into his embrace when he kissed my neck. “Kayce, we have to go back to work.”
“Your mother doesn’t need you for another week right?” He mumbled into my neck until I spun around in his arms.
My mother Lynelle Perry was going to be stepping down and leaving Montana in the coming weeks since she got a higher job in government. Kayce’s father John was taking over her position as governor of the state. “No, she's busy helping your father. But I want to spend time with her before she leaves.”
“One more day won’t hurt anybody, darling.” Kayce leaned down, capturing my lips deeply.
I squealed when he got the chance to pick me up by my thighs and I wrapped my legs around his waist. “Kayce!” He carried me over to the edge of the bed sitting me down on it where we both fell backwards on the mattress.
“By the way you're looking at me right now I can tell that you’re not complaining too much.” Kayce smirked down at me only wearing some blue jeans and his boots that he kicked off.
Running my hands up his chest I wrapped my hands down his neck drawing him in for another long round of the morning. “Who I am kidding you’re hard to resist, Dutton.”
“So are you Mrs. Dutton.” He mumbled in between kisses and we laid in the bedsheets together till the next morning when we had to get back to the ranch.
Kayce drove the truck up underneath the Yellowstone Dutton ranch sign. We parked outside the main house where I turned in my seat facing him. “You know we could always hide out in the bunkhouse till the cowboys are done with work for the day.” A smirk was playing off my lips.
“I like the way you think, baby.” He smiled hoping out of his seat and I scrambled to get my door open. Kayce scopped me up before my feet could even hit the ground, carrying me to the bunkhouse door.
I giggled, wrapping my arms around his neck and he kicked the door opened. He sat me down on the nearest bed beginning to remove my shirt until someone else's voice entered the building. “You two look just like you did the day you got married.”
“Ryan! What the hell are you doing here?” Kayce broke the kiss, breaking the kiss that we was sharing seeing the cowboy standing at the edge of the bed.
Ryan raised a brow. “I should be asking, are you going to sleep on my bed right now?”
“Oh god! We didn’t mean for that to happen.” Covering my face with my hands I groaned feeling somewhat embarrassed at the very thought of what we we’re about to do before he walked in. “Wait what did you mean we are just like how we were on our wedding day?”
Ryan chuckled with a smile. “Your wedding was huge and I don’t mean it’s just because of who your mother is. But I also mean weddings and other big events don’t really happen here.”
“Ryan, Rip says we have to move more cattle across the ranch before Gator starts dinner. What….what are you talking to these two about?” Colby enters the barn seeing the three of us talking.
Ryan turns toward his fellow cowboy working. “I was talking about their wedding.”
“Ah yeah. I remember that day. That was the biggest amount of people I had ever seen here before. And the food spread was insane.” Colby throws his head back, running his fingers through his black curly locks.
Thinking back on my wedding day I smiled at the memory. Kayce had been dressed in a light white dress shirt, black tie and his only pair of not dirty blue jeans and some boots. I was wearing my dress obviously that had lace all over the train. I had put some of my hair up with a flower crown braid leaving the rest of it down going down my back. Paring it with my light tan cowgirl boots instead of heels. “I didn’t think you guys were so focused on our wedding. We weren’t even that focused on the details after we got to the ceremony and said the words "I Do.”
“Okay we’ll y’all should get out of here before Rip comes and kick your asses or better yet I’ll kick your asses if you tell anyone else we are back yet.” Kayce threatened sitting down on the bed beside me glaring at the two cowboys who were still standing in the bunkhouse doorway.
Ryan raised his hand up in the air. “Chill out man. We’re going.”
“Who knew married Dutton’s could be more demanding than they already were before.” Colby mumbled exiting the bunkhouse with his fellow cowboy.
Kayce ran a hand through his hair looking back at me. “Are you reconsidering coming back home early like I knew I would?”
“Possibly….do ya think we could sneak back to the truck without them noticing?” I asked him, grabbing his discarded cowboy hat up from the dirty floor putting it on my head after dusting it off.
Kayce smirked the same expression as me. He moved forward, capturing his lips with mine. “You are a genius. But we could just drive back to the Summer Camp for a few more days.”
“Fine Mr. Dutton you win.” I caved knowing he wouldn't leave me alone until I agreed. We grabbed our jackets and ran as fast as possible to his truck in the driveway. I knew the day I said yes I was in for one hell of a ride changing my last name to Dutton and I wouldn't change one thing.

John is waiting for Lee on the porch of the farmhouse when he returns home from his honeymoon. He’d dropped you off at the end of the trail where Kayce had left the VW. You have to be at the conservation centre in Helena this afternoon to discuss the soil samples you took from Pasture 12. Lee intends to meet you afterwards to help you pack up your stuff for your move to the farmhouse.
It's the coffee cup in his father’s hand that pisses Lee off, it’s the chipped one from his kitchen. He can smell that special brand of coffee you like, the one you buy from the farmer’s market. This is John Dutton trying to send a message and Lee reads it loud and clear.
Nothing is yours, it all belongs to the ranch.
Lee doesn’t say anything as he sits down on the opposite side of the steps. If they’re going to talk about this, it’s going to be on equal terms because Lee, he will not stand before this man like a naughty child. He’s done bending to his father’s will.
“You left one hell of a mess for me to clean up.” John says taking a sip of his coffee as he stares out across the pasture.
Lee knows he’s talking about the angry phone calls he’s been receiving from ranchers since the news hit that Lee had gotten married, the ones that were trying to trade their daughters like cattle for a piece of the ranch.
“I never said I wanted a wife.” Lee reminds him as his gaze fixates on the cattle roaming in the distance.
“But you took one anyway.” John points out, his gaze coming to rest on Lee’s silver wedding band.
“I know you hate her…”
“I don’t hate her.” John tells Lee, setting his coffee cup down alongside him. “She’s just not right for the ranch.”
“But she’s right for me.” Lee says tucking his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “She was back then and she is now.”
There’s silence between the two of them for a moment before John sighs.
“I had someone like that.” He says quietly. “A long time ago I had to make a decision between the woman I love and what was best for the ranch.”
“You mean Lou.” Lee says and John tilts his head towards him in surprise. “I saw the two of you together after mom died, I heard what you said about how you loved her, how you’d always loved her.”
Lee has known from a young age that his mother and father didn’t act like other parents. There was always a coldness between the two of them, a practicality. It wasn’t until the night of the wake when he saw his father interact with Lou that he realised why. John hadn’t been able to take his eyes off her during the event, he held onto her hands a little too long when she gave him her condolences and that night after everyone else had left, he’d undressed her in the room his wife hadn’t shared in years.
Lee doesn’t know what happened after that, only his father is now in a causal relationship with Governor Perry  and Lou sells honey at the farmer’s market with her twenty six year old son, Joesph.
“The men in our family, they don’t marry for love.” John says quietly. “We marry for duty and that’s what I need you to do.”
“What are you saying?” Lee asks him, his voice barely more than a whisper.
“When I get back to the house, I’ll have Jamie draw up an annulment, voiding the marriage.” John says clasping his hands together. “After that we’ll pick someone more appropriate, someone whose the right fit.”
Lee can’t speak, his eyes sting as he pulls the keys to the farmhouse out from his pocket and dumps them into his father’s lap.
“I’m not leaving Anna.” He says, his voice raw with emotion as he raises to his feet. “You took twenty years from the two of us, you don’t get to have the rest.”

PREDICTIONS
1 episode remains for what's being said is the last season of Yellowstone, but there are rumors a season 6 will happen to continue this rushed storyline. If they do I hope they lay to rest the plot of John Dutton's death. I honestly feel like that's settled mostly at this point, except Jamie. These last 2 episodes should focus on what to do with Jamie and how they will handle the Ranch and Land with Tate and the Natives. NOTHING else should matter for these last 2 episodes. We don't have time for much of anything else unless these episodes are feature length episodes. Even then it's not enough time to wrap up this plot. I feel like things will be left unfinished, unanswered forever or till The Madison is released which is supposed to be post-Yellowstone. There's also a series 1943 being produced which as well will obviously feature John Dutton III's parents and early family life on the ranch, might even have a crossover with characters from 1923.
I'm still predicting Spencer Dutton and Alexandra Dutton are John Dutton III's grandparents.
POST FINALE THOUGHTS
Absolutely beautiful ending to the series, bringing the main plot of everything full circle. It stayed true to what everyone knew would happen in the end, the Natives would get the land back as told by the Crowe Elder who gave James Dutton the land back in 1883. In 7 generations, the Natives would come back and take land however needed. Tate Dutton, Kayce Dutton's son, is the 7th generation of the Dutton family since settling in Montana.
The focus was on everyone's ending/land/ranch, John Dutton III's funeral and Jamie being the last loose end. Was everything wrapped up nicely, no. Did we have to have everything answered by the end, no. With the circumstances they were dealt (Costner/Sheridan feud) it was as well done as it could be.
This could be a season finale or a series finale if they go either route. I think it's likely we'll get a Beth/Rip spinoff along with the long awaited Four Sixes 6666, 1943 and The Madison (which is a spinoff but not related to the Dutton's)

30 - A Positive Family Day

Country Rancher
Tags @whateverthecostner @rosie-posie08 @kaycejdutton @kayceduttonn @kcloveswrestling @the-morning-star-falls @kaymudd @hcwthewestwaswcn @hcllfireandhclywater
Sitting up in the bed I stretched my arms and legs out seeing the sun was starting to rise above the mountains. Grabbing my hat from the hook in the kitchen I sat it on my head stepping out onto the front porch. The ranch seemed less like normal with half of our people gone with the cattle. I don’t think I’ve ever been here when it was like this. “It’s quiet this morning. I didn’t think you would be up this early.”
Sighing I turned on my boots seeing my husband sitting on the porch swing sipping a cup of coffee. “It is. I just thought - I guess you can’t shake something once you do it long enough. So what will we do today Mr. Dutton?”
"I think we should just spend time with the kids today. Since we've always busy every time they are with us. So we could do a movie day, fair or whatever they want." He suggested running his fingers through my hair after I sat down on the swing beside him laying my head on his chest.
Lifting my head up from his embrace I nodded, kissing him slowly. "That's a great idea, Kayc." He leans down kissing me back until we heard the sound of four sets of feet coming down the staircase.
"Well it's time for breakfast huh. Pancakes?" He suggested tugging me back to the house seeing the kids running around the kitchen table until Kayce wissiled making them all sit down.
Bree and Tate were having a tickle fight until they saw us watching them. "Why are you and dad here, normally you're out working early?" The eldest son of the family asked curiously.
"Did mommy and daddy get in trouble?" Elsa asked sitting beside her twin.
Shaking my head I opened the fridge, finding most of the stuff to make pancakes really quick for them. I could have woken Gator up but I also knew how to cook some stuff on my own too. So it's best to let him sleep. "No sweet girl, we didn't get in trouble. Everyone else just had to take a little trip so your daddy and I stayed to watch our beautiful children."
A few minutes later I slide three different types of pancake plates on the table. Two chocolate and one strawberry. Sliding in the chair beside Kayce we each took one chocolate leaving the rest for the boys and Bree. Elsa loved strawberries more than anything. Shoving a bite in my mouth I nodded in my husband's direction giving him the go ahead. "Kids, you're mom and I were thinking about going to the fair today. Since the boys in the bunkhouse will be resting for a day being up late last night helping the others ride off. What do y'all think?"
Dallas spit out some of his food cheering alongside his older brother. “The fair. Let’s go!”
“That sounds fun, mom. I’ll go tell Carter that I can’t go for our morning ride.” Bree pushed her chair back grabbing her coat with her long hair getting thrown around. Since John had become governor I had to have the period conversation with our daughter since she had started on her thirteenth birthday before her grandfather became governor.
“She’s spending too much time with him for my taste.” Kayce mumbled, giving me an annoyed look.
September 10th
“Mom!” Shooting awake in the bed I heard my eldest daughter call out to me from her bedroom tossing the covers aside. I did my best to not wake Kayce since he had been up really late last night.
Peaking my head through her door I saw her sitting on the ground with a red spot stained in her bed crying. “Oh baby. I’ve got you.” Wrapping my arms around her she threw her arms around me where I helped her into the bathroom sitting on the toilet.
Quickly moving back into her bedroom I yanked the sheets off seeing it thankfully didn’t go through so I threw them in the hamper dealing with it later. Entering the bathroom I moved her hair from her face seeing her eyes were puffy from crying. “Ssssh sweet girl. I’m gonna ask you a simple question and I want to answer it with how much you know. Do you know what this means?”
“That I can have a….a baby now.” Bree sniffed, clutching her hands into fists in her lap. “I didn’t think it would come yet. I thought it wouldn’t be a mess…what do I do mom?”
Tucking hair behind her ear I pulled her into a hug sucking in a breath knowing this wasn’t going to be easy for her. She grabs my shirt until I break the hug holding her shoulders gently staring at my first child. “Bree, listen to me. I don’t want you to think that this makes you weaker or that you have to change because it doesn’t. From this day forward you can be a lot tougher than most men and that is a gift. Being able to have a baby is a choice. You can still be a rancher my little cowgirl.”
“Thank you, mom…do I still get a birthday cake?” I snorted out a laugh at her question nodding my head yes to her.
Kayce parked the truck as I helped the kids inside the fair gates. Elsa tugged my arm seeing a Mary-go-round with ponies yanking me in the direction of it. “Ponies. Ponies!” I let her drag me over to them and the others followed after us.
“Up we go.” Kayce picked her up sitting her on one of the horses paying the worker for a round.
Tate and Dallas stood in front of us where I put my hands on my hips raising a brow to the boys. “What do you need from us, my boys?”
“Can me and Bree have money to take Dallas around?” Tate asked, moving his tan cowboy hat up looking us in the eye.
Kayce sighed, handing him some money hollering to them as they ran off towards the bumper carts with Bree and Dallas trying to quickly finish eating a funnel cake. “Be careful. Don’t make yourselves sick!” Intertwining my hand with his left Elsa was giggling on the metal horse that she could ride by herself compared to having to be held by one of us on a real one at home. “Anymore I feel like all we are is a bank and a driver.”
“Hey don’t worry. They are king being kids. That’s what is important.” I replied turning around and we started watching our youngest again. Unknown to us that Bree had run into the bathroom throwing up more than just the cake she had eaten feeling sick before she ever got onto a ride.
A few hours we drove the kids back to the ranch. Tate headed upstairs opening the door for us. I was carrying a sleeping Elsa and Kayce had Dallas. Bree was strangling behind us so she was the one to close the front door. Laying the twins down in the bed Tate and Kayce went to sit in front of the fireplace enjoying the dinner Gator had made for the bunkhouse. Slowly walking out to the barn I could hear crying inside the doorway so I peaked my head in. “Bree. Carter, what is going on?”
“Oh geez fuck. Mrs. Dutton…” Carter cursed, spinning around on his boots fears written all over his face. “I didn’t mean for this to happen we just - we didn’t it would happen the first time.”
Entering the barn I held my hands up not wanting to see him start crying or something. Bree avoided my gaze nervously playing with her hair that she had done since she was six years old. “Bree, look at me. Please tell me what the hell he is talking about?”
My daughter finally met my gaze, muttering the words I never expected to hear from her mouth, causing me to see my own life flash before my eyes. “I’m…pregnant.”

Kevin Costner in Yellowstone (2018) Daybreak
S1E1
John Dutton rules his ranch Yellowstone and the whole valley in Montana like a pioneer age patriarch, with three sons, neither he considers the full package, rather 'modern softies'. John euthanizes an injured horse after a collision with cowboy son Jamie Dutton, then has a legal case dismissed with the help of lawyer son Jamie and governor Lynelle Perry. John's foreman Rip Wheeler catches, brands and hires ex-con Jimmy Hurdstrom and uses dynamite to divert the river in order to stop the dam project planned by the Ivy league-trained new Indian chief, who uses casino winnings and senator Huntington to become city rival developer's dam project. Meanwhile, Kayce, John's third son, lives on the Indian reservation with his squaw wife and half-blood son Tate, whom John finally gets to meet and start bonding with. When Dutton cattle wander onto Native American land, a confrontation results in the deaths of Lee and Robert...
*The main actors playing the Dutton family spent four days at cowboy camp, learning how to ride and be comfortable out on the ranch.

Beautiful Gothic Cowgirl.
Tumblr media
Ryan (last name unknown) x fem!Dutton/Goth!reader fluff :).
Requested? Nah
Warnings? Slight season 5 spoilers, quick mention of miscarriage, slight angst too.
Summary: Your family keeps making jokes about Ryan and you getting married.
The sun streams through the window between the blackout curtains decorated with the phases of the moon. Throwing off my thick black comforter, I get out of bed and head the bathroom connected to my room. A knock sounds at the door while I'm picking my clothes out for the day. A cute black sundress with mesh sleeves, platform demonias with chains and some white and black striped thigh highs. I open my door to be greeted with the lovely smiling face of my boyfriend. "Good morning baby, nice pj's." He smiles, pointing at the oversized shirt of his I stole, pushing past me into my room. "Thank you, it was ethically sourced also how did you get in?" "Ethically sourced my ass, you stole it but you look good in my clothes so you can keep it. Gator let me in, what can I say I missed my girl. My bunk gets lonely". I giggle and pull him into a hug. "Well since you missed me so much, wait here while I shower and I'll let you watch me get ready."
"Nooooo baaaaaabe. Why can't I shower with you?" He crosses his arms and pouts. "Awe baby don't be pouty, aren't you a big bad cattleman and ATF agent? Branded men don't pout Ryan. Besides, dad and I are meeting for breakfast at the country club to discuss plans for my cabin. Which yes, I would love for you to join us." I straddle his lap and cross my arms at his nape, kissing his forehead. "Besides, if you shower with me I'll have to shower a second time." He laughs as I close the bathroom door rebuting with a loud "you didn't mind last week".
10 minutes later, Ryan is asleep on my bed. His boots on the floor and hat discarded on my nightstand. Quickly getting dressed then I do my makeup, adding some fun spiderwebs droping from my winged eyeliner. "You look- "FUCK" I accidentally scream loudly. "You scared the shit out of me". ".. good, let's go eat" he finishes his sentence. "Sorry?" "It's fine, just easily startled." He puts his boots back on and his hat. He holds his hand out to me, I go to take it but he sweeps me into his arms and carries me bridal style down the stairs. "what are you doin?" I ask him, looking at him like he's grown a second head. "Just practicing" he smiles cheekily and kisses my cheek. "Ryan quit actin like an ass." Rip hollers from the end of the stairs. "Oh hush, it's cute. Besides, you're just jealous you didn't think to do so first my love." Beth bites back. "Daddy called and he wants me to join you both at the club but for Governor business." We all head outside and load up into one of the ranch's trucks. Rip drives with Beth in front with Ryan and I in the back. "So Ryan, when were you thinking of popping the question because (Y/n) won't take just any ring, especially one that looks like something a "country gal" would wear." Ryan goes to interject but he's cut off by my sister. "So I'm thinking a gunmetal grey band with a black tone surrounded by tiny emeralds besides, I mean you've been dating for two years, I think it's time ." "Aaaaaah lalalalala Beth, stop. We haven't talked about it. You're 100% correct in the ring but I want it to be a surprise!" She shoots Ryan a wink and turns back in her seat. Rip is chuckling to himself while Ryan laces his fingers through mine and holds my hand. His smile is breathtaking. The love in his eyes fills me with warmth. He kisses the back of my hand and mouths "i love you". I respond by kissing the back of his own hand. "Good luck, man." Rip, still chuckling, says to Ryan. A rare smile on my brother in law's face, rare since it isn't directed at my older sister.
We're gathered at the table, then Kayce and his family walk through the doors. Kayce speaks as he is seated, "So. Ryan, I wanted to ask you. Will you be moving in with (Y/n)? I mean it has been two years since y'all started datin man." He clears his throat and adjusts his seat, he looks to me for reassurance, I squeeze his hand I'm holding under the table. "If you and your family allow it, it is what we planned to do, yes." Then dad looks to me "There is no allow, all my children do what they want despite any protest they might hear. And he makes you happy sweetheart?" "Yes he does, very much." A blush spreads across my boyfriend's face. Out of the corner of my eye Beth's shoulders shake, she's trying to hold back her laughter at poor Ryan's blush. I shake my head, my own shoulders rolling with my giggles. "Oh daddy, don't forget what we discussed about their house warming party". I go to interject, my mouth open as dad holds his hand up to stop me. "You're gettin one honey. Beth will help you decorate the cabin how ever you want. Rip I want you today to tell the other hands Ryan is moving out of the bunkhouse." "Yes sir I will. I'll have the guys help y'all move in too, (Y/n/n). It'll be my wedding present." He chuckles again, like in the truck. Ryan's face is beet red. "Y'all're gonna give the poor boy a heart attack before we even get to move in." I laugh a little louder, it spreads around the table. It feels good. Soon, heads are turning to look. They recognize daddy at the head of the table and quickly go back to their meals.
"so daddy when will the cabin be ready for us to move in?" Finishing what food is in his mouth first, "it already is. I want you two in there tonight. The boys have already moved your bed and vanity out of your room and into the master bedroom. I had Teeter and Jimmy's uh fiancé move your clothes and everything else over. Babygirl as of an hour ago, your room is bare." I stand up and walk to him, giving him a big hug and kiss his cheek. "Thank you, and thank you guys. I appreciate every and all that you do." They all just dismiss my appreciation with a hand and all day a variation of "it's what family's for".
"Excuse me daddy, I was wanting to take us girls to a few boutiques around town for the cabin, do you think you boys could take one vehicle back together and leave one with us?" Beth asks, this is news to me. She looks back at me and gives me a wink. "Yeah honey that's fine. I'm happy my girls are spending time together again, the ladies will take my car and us boys will go back in the ranch truck." "Thank you dad" I say, "don't worry about it (Y/n/n). Call it a wedding present". A loud laugh rips from everyone at all. Ryan pulls his cowboy hat down to cover his harshly blushing face. "Aaawe baby, don't hide your pretty face. The red really brings out the embarrassment in your eyes" I joke and pinch his cheek. He swats my hand away and kisses my cheek.
Hours later and it's dinner time, my whole family and everyone from the bunkhouse is in my new living room drinking my new beer. Ryan and Colby laughing together. My boyfriend and his boyfriend. Lloyd comes to pat me on my shoulder. "You done good girlie, they don't make cowboys like us and Ryan anymore. And hey, if you get tired of him you know where to find me." He wins chuckling, he's always been so playful with everyone. "Well then I guess I'll just have to meet you at our regular spot" I play back. "Lloyd, quit flirtin with Ryan's wife" Kayce laughs and yells from across the room. Ryan heard it and he makes his way towards us. I put my hands up in faux surrender. "Well...I did want to wait until we've lived together for a while, but now is better than ever. And everyone has made the joke today, almost ruining my surprise." Colby comes up to him and hands him a red velvet box. No, I mean yes, but. There's no way.
"(Y/n) (M/n) Dutton, I remember the first day I saw you. You were wearing this exact dress and socks, this beautiful gothic cowgirl. I'd never seen anything like it. Your hair was black with bright red underneath. You caught me starin and you smiled. It's like I was floating among the stars. Lloyd told me it was rude to stare and told me who you are, my only response is that I was gonna marry you someday. He said "yeah maybe when spider fly" then I told him that's terrifying. Anyways, I love you and have since I first saw you. Will you do me the honor and make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?" I can't see Ryan anymore since my eyes are blurry with tears, I nod frantically. "Fuck yes, now get up here and kiss me". Looking me in my eyes, makeup running, he slips the ring on my finger, "Yes ma'am." Cheers resound through the small cabin. I see everyone try to slyly wipe their own tears away. The kiss is searing and full of everyone emotion left unexpressed. After we pull away I notice everyone has their phone out. Teeter is the first to hug me and congratulate me, only because I had asked her to bring me another beer seconds before Ryan proposed. She goes back to the kitchen sitting on the counter, where Ryan was, next to her man Colby.
Everyone forms a line in front of the pair of us. My family in front of me and the hands in front of Ryan and they criss cross between us to congratulate the both of us. Cheers, tears, appraisal, and happiness runs rampant through the house. Jamie walks through the door looking around nervously. "It's fine Jamie, you're not going to be exiled for wanting to congratulate the happy newly engaged couple" Beth yells from counter, she was chatting with Teeter about something I couldn't hear. "What? Who got engaged? I came looking for dad" Well that stings. The hell does he mean who? Who else would it be? Its the beer. And the emotions. That's why it happens. "WHAT THE FUCK AM I TO YOU JAMIE? FUCKING ROADKILL?" I shout. Anger bubbling quickly, and it's released just as quickly. Its just the beer and emotions in the air I keep telling myself. Totally not the resentment I bare towards him. Ryan grabs my arm but I rip it out. "No. Get the fuck in here and tell me congratulations and a hug like a brother would or I'll tell Beth what you did.. and dad."
He looks sick to his stomach and looks between the two aforementioned family members. He rushed to my side and hugs me. "I am happy for you little sister. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart." The smile on his face is forced. Little bitch. He goes to dad but dad blows him off to hug me tight. "Tell me later sweetheart.". He then pulls Ryan into a gruff hug that makes him grunt from how tight dad is squeezing him. I think it's an actual display of strength and not a (soon-to-be) familial embrace. Jamie and dad go out to the back yard to talk. Kayce pulls me to the couch to sit, I'd been standing since we got home. We were all tired though all I did was shop today but it was a lot of walking. Tate sits in my lap and tells me he's happy for me and asks if he can be the ring bearer. "Of course you can buddy boy, anything for the best nephew I've ever had. On one condition though." Kayce gives me that look, he got my joke but it breezes over Tate's head. Monica mirrors Tate and sits in Kayce's lap. "He's your only nephew, (Y/n/n)" she chuckles. I smile wide at her and pull my sock and boot off. Showing my new tattoo, a memorial for John, a memorial for the nephew I lost. Monica and Kayce hug me tight, squishing Tate in the process. Monica whispers she loves me in my ear. "Wait what's the one condition?" Tate pipes up. "Oh yes, right. You have to ride my horse Ida B. Hay Bales down the isle." Kayce laughs loud, shouting a "what the hell? That's what you named your new horse?" "Yes! Take your problem elsewhere Mr. Dutton. I'm a modern day feminist." "Okay, okay, turn down the heat sis. I just ain't heard no horse name like that before." I huff and roll my eyes, pushing his arm. Hopin the push I put no strength behind will make him fall over. He scoffs and does the same. I do it again but harder. Then Tate pushes him too. "yes buddy boy, it's two against one I think we can win! Help me defeat your daddy". He lets out a war cry then pushes against his dad's arm, I put my hand below his and push. My brother copied his son and shoves me. Oh it's on. But the backdoor slides open before the "fight" can devolve into a sibling fight. "Kayce quit hittin your sister." Dad's gravelly voice says, I stick my tongue out at Kayce showing off I've won. He chuckles and shakes his head. "Auntie (Y/n/n) can I have another juice please?" Tate asks, Kaycee shakes his head no while Tate looks at me. "Yeah baby go getchu one outta the fridge, there's also some peeps on the counter get you a couple and bring me one and a beer back please". He thanks me and shouts excitedly about the prospect of sugar. Monica gives me a dissaproving look but I just point the blame to Kayce. A wonderful evening.

Best of 2022 TV Shows #3: Yellowstone (Paramount Network)
While not pulling what RWBY did six years earlier, Yellowstone continued its rapid expansion of both quality and aesthetic with the first part of its 5th chapter.
That somehow saw patriarch John become Montanas newest Governor.
All the while he continued prioritizing his ranch over the populace.
While day to day operations sees Jamie Beth and Kayce continue with all matters of business including run ins from Tom Rainwater and the local residents of the reservation.
Tumblr media
Nothing but intrigue fills this as Kevin Costner brilliantly moves with his well defined style.
Now we await as he gets his likely comeuppance from within.
SUM 22: The Dutton Family Gains more and more clout with The 5th chapter of this amazing story.

“Thank you for taking me out to lunch.  I enjoyed it.” My husband thanked me for holding open the door letting me walk inside once.
Smiling up at my husband we walked hand in hand I squeezed his larger hand in my smaller one.  “You’re welcome.  And I don’t have to run back to the ranch if you don’t want me to.” Kayce smiled, kissing the side of my head.
We entered into the Livestock Commissioners building before his receptionist waved the two of us over to her desk giving him some news.  “The Chairman of the Stockgrowers's association is in your office. “
“Which one?” Kayce asked the woman.
“All of them.” She responded.
Sending him a glance I replied.  “This should be interesting.”
“How you boys doing?” My husband asked, sitting down eyeing the two older gentleman cowboys standing before us.
Emmett Walsh nodded his head with a soft smile. “Better with you in office.”
“Appreciate that.” Kayce replied.
Emmett said back.  “No, we appreciate it.”
“How can I help ya?” My husband leans back in his desk chair.
“Well we're thinking maybe we can help you and help ourselves in the process.” Emmett explained.
I wisseled thinking they were joking but the looks on their faces seemed to be genuine.  “Bless my boots.  You boys can’t be serious - wait, you're really serious?”
“Yes Mrs. Dutton we are.” J. T. Rigby leaned against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest.  “Governors termed out. She's got two years left.”
I raised my freehand that was rested on my husband’s shoulder.  “Alissa is perfectly fine, sir.”
Emmett and Rigby looked at one another briefly.  “Time to decide who replaces her is now.  We're thinking that's you, Kayce.”
“Hey, we're serious.” Rigby commented back seeing Kayce start chuckling not believing what they were suggesting to him.
Kayce shakes his head no.  “I ain't no politician.”
“You damn right, you aren't.  You say what you mean and you do what you say.” Emmett pointed out proudly to the horse trainer.
The ex Navy Seal shifted his gaze over to me and then back to the older cowboys.  “My brand of justice isn’t what the state wants.”
“It's exactly what the state wants and needs.  Some bastard goes and steals your cattle.  You don't punt it to the sheriff.  You just go over there and shoot the son of a bitch.” Emmett bluntly spoke out resembling much of my father at times.
Kayce rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “I don't think that's much of a campaign slogan.”
“Hell son.  You could print “I killed the cattle thief” on t-shirts and sell them in church.” I covered my mouth nearly busting out in laughter because it was totally true.  Rigby reminded the younger Dutton who began to stand and shake the man’s extended hand. “Kayce, these things take time. Just think about it.”
“Governors don't have to stand when people leave the room.  You just sit down and shake hands.” Emmett and Rigby each shook his hand exiting the office leaving me and my husband alone in his office.
I hoisted myself up onto the empty space on the top of his desk.  Kayce raised a brow in my direction, noticing a smirk plastered across my lips.  “What are you smirking for, baby?”
“Governor Kayce doesn’t sound too bad to me.”
My husband grins up at me grabbing me by my hips and sitting me down on his lap with our noses brushing against one another.  “You’d wanna be the Governor's wife hmm?”
“Maybe.  It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?” I asked him, tilting my head to the side, capturing my lips down onto his.
Kayce gripped some of my hair on the back of my head while his other hand went around my waist bringing me in closer against his chest.  I fisted my fingers into the fabric of his brown jacket kissing him and he kissed me back deeper before we broke needing air for a brief moment. “If it happens you better help me run the state, Lissa Rae.”
“I couldn’t imagine leaving you alone to run Montana.” I chuckled cupping his face in my hands and he reconnected our lips enjoying the moment.
Leaning in the doorway of the barn I caught sight of my husband riding towards me from a distance in the mountains alongside his father John.  They had gone riding this morning because he had the chance to come back to the ranch before he went to a bunch of meetings that applied to his new position.
Kayce rode up into the barn tugging the reins of his black horse leading the beautiful animal to a slow stop.  He swung his legs dismounting from the saddle rushing into my waiting open arms where we embraced the other person.  “I thought you would have been out riding when I came back.”
“Nah, not today babe. Today is more important than riding horses.”
Kayce drew away from the embrace, resting his hands on my hips. “It’s not my birthday or yours.  And I know the kids' birthdays have passed so what am I missing?”
“Veteran’s Day, Kayce.” I replied to him with a half smile.
The year he came home we didn’t talk about what he had seen or done over there in his times of war.  We focused on taking care of our daughter and he alternated his time to care for Tate and Monica.
Then we transitioned to the years when Faith turned six years old he began opening up to me out of fear of having to go back into the service.  During the time he didn’t want to accept money from working on his father’s ranch so he made very little money by selling horses.
Currently he has started getting through his struggles of PTSD and letting me and his kids honor his service for fighting for our country.
Draping my arms over his shoulder I met his deep brown eyes watching him bend his head down avoiding my gaze briefly.  “You know soldiers don’t tell their stories anymore, darling.  They just do their best to live through them.”
“We don’t have to talk about what happened but I do want you to know I appreciate what you went through for us.  So I want today to be where you, me and the kids spend time together.” I touched the side of his face with one of my hands making him look me in the eye this time.
Kayce nodded intertwining one of his hands with mine tugging me in the direction of the open barn door leaving his horse in the stall.  “I’d like that very much. And I know the perfect spot to spend the day.”
“The summer camp.” I grinned knowing what he was referring to. We began walking in the direction of the main house until I heard my phone ringing in my pocket.  Taking it out I saw it was my mother calling me which wasn’t a common thing.  “Hang on, it's my mom.  Hey mom, what’s going on?”
She responded through the phone.  “I need you to come to the house now.  We need to talk about the next steps now after what happened to your father.”
“I don’t want to talk about what happened to daddy!” I shouted back at her, feeling tears quickly falling down my face.
Kayce touched my arm.  “Alissa.”
“I’m okay.” I cleared my throat speaking back to my mother before hanging up the phone.  “I’m just not ready to talk about what happened to daddy.  Please help Alana understand that.  The ranch will be there when I’m ready for it.”
“Alissa.  Hey, it's okay.  I’ve got you.” Kayce touched my shoulder causing me to fling my body into his embrace.  Clutching the fabric of his brown jacket I sobbed into his chest while he ran one hand through my hair knowing the reason I wasn’t able to be around my family right now.  “They shouldn’t have come after your family, especially your father.”

16 Governor Dutton

4 years Later
Rolling over in my spot in the bed I stretched my limbs out seeing that I had woken up before my alarm had gone off. I shifted my body where I ended up laying on my right side facing my husband who was still asleep right beside me. It was a rare change that I ever got to watch him sleep. Normally he would already be up and heading to the barn even though he knew we’d both officially start work at the same time before the sun had even risen up in the sky.
Shifting myself to sit up against the pillows I gently started nudging him awake by pushing my hand against his shoulder. “Kayce. Kayce, hey. It’s time for work.”
“Mmm okay.” He grumbled rubbing the sleep from his eyes tossing the covers and quickly shrugging his work clothes on.
Changing into a dark red flannel, dark blue jeans and some muddy black boots. I plucked my hat off the hook near the door dusting off the light brown cowboy hat, placing it on my head looking at my husband. “Time to go to work.”
“You said it, Lissa Rae.” Kayce kissed my forehead and we exited the house together getting in his truck to meet the Livestock Agents out by the border.
Exiting the truck I smiled in his direction seeing he already had a horse waiting for me. Climbing up on it the wind moved hair in front of my face. "Your father is getting the governor job today. Rip's got to manage the ranch for an entire party tonight. I don't think there's ever been this many possible people there."
"Yeah well I sure as heck never expected him to take the position to begin with...but now it's...real." Kayce chuckled but I could hear the shock in his tone. If there was one type of person I never expected John to become, it was governor. He only cares about what is best for the ranch. Meaning that he would destroy the possibility of an airport and more before it had even been a month I had no doubt about it.
Clicking my tongue and getting my horse to move we raced with the others to make sure the people trying to cross the boarded with stolen horses didn't get away. My horse turned to a stop as one guy tried to move around me. Yanking my reins the other way my horse got directly in the face of the bad guys horse where I could shove them back onto our side. Kayce caught one guy almost escaping on horse back until he roped him by the waist throwing him down into the water. He then jumped off cuffing him and sending him with our officers. "Man I gotta say I like starting my day like this. Riding horses and watching you rope, Kayce." I smirked resting my chin in the palm of my hand.
"Oh you do...well who knows your cowboy might have something else up his sleeve later tonight." He flirted back climbing on his horse riding back to the truck but not before sending me a wink seeing me blushing a little.
Getting back to the ranch we got out of our truck seeing a bunch of people and tents already set up. Rushing inside the house we changed out of our work clothes and into something formal. Kayce in one of his button up shirts and jeans with his hat. Me in a simple orange dress and brown boots wearing a light brown cowgirl hat on my head. "I'll get us drinks. Be right back darlin'." He kisses my cheek as I caught sight of Ryan and the other cowboys playing around with ropes. Slowly walking over there was a girl trying to show like she wasn't watching them but I could tell she was.
"Which one of them is eyeing you. I work with them all. I can be a good judge." I smiled leaning my back against the fence seeing my sister in law Beth walking over to Rip who was watching the party from up on the hill.
The girl shakes her head in denial but failed. "I'm not gonna get with any of them. They can't be devoted to both you and a place like this.. I'm Abby by the way."
She sticks out her hand that I shook. "Alissa Dutton, nice to meet you." Staring back at the boys I saw Ryan staring over our direction with a smile. "I think you should reconsider the whole not dating a cowboy thing. If you find an amazing one you'll be suprised."
Kayce comes our way carrying two beers in his hands grinning which is something that doesn't happen often on this ranch. "Well who would you suggest, him?" She pointed at my husband, making me snort out a reply immediately.
"He's taken, honey." Pointing at Ryan with my index finger she followed where I was pointing. "Him though I slept with a few times. Trust me he's good."
Kayce hands me my beer, tipping his hat to Abby beside me offering me his arm for a dance. "Care to dance, darlin'?"
Sitting my beer on the ground alongside his I spun him on his toes dragging him onto the dance floor by the stage that had a live band. "I just hooked Ryan up with a girl. Look over there. That's her." His eyes shifted over watching Ryan playfully rope the girl in for a dance with his charm making me smile.
"Good for him. Now if only we could stop that from happening-" He scoffed lightly tilting his head in the direction of the barn allowing me to see Faith and Carter spinning the other around as the music played. He had gotten taller and our daughters hair had gotten longer. I knew it was a matter of time before we have to have the talk about periods and what not.
Kayce spins me out and back into his chest throwing my hair around. "Don't you worry cowboy. We've got a while before they completely grow up on us." He intertwined our hands together again and our boots kicked up dust around.
Exiting the barn the next morning Rip had assigned Carter to ride John's horse. Faith and I climbed on our saddles. Kayce was having our other kids help clean up from the party. "Cart you're missing something." She called out to him as he was running around in a panic making sure everything was good.
"What am I missing, Faith?" He asked, halting in his tracks.
She giggled tipping her tan hat up to him where he smacked his forehead cursing as he got it from the barn finally climbing onto the horse. "Hat shit. Where's the hat!"
Kicking my horse in the belly I led the kids out following the others to see them moving the cattle. Faith and I worked pretty well together. Carter got one until his horse fell into a hole. Whipping my head around I raced over seeing his arm messed up. "Carter, you alright. What hurts?" My motherly instincts kicking in seeing him not being able to raise his arm.
"You need to keep one eye on the cow and the other on the ground." Rip orders seeing the horses legs didn't look too good.
Carter looks at Faith almost in tears as she pets her grandfather's horse. "Is the horse gonna be okay?" She shakes her head no seeing Rip reach for the rifle on his saddle.
"Rip, wait a second. That's John's horse. There must be something we can do.." I trailed off rising to my feet and securing his arm holding the shotgun.
He slumped his shoulders allowing me to see regret in his eyes. He hated having to kill a horse everyone knew that. "That leg won't heal, Alissa. We can't have him suffering." He gently pushed me aside with Faith pointing the weapon and killing the horse.
Closing my eyes I immediately replied towards my daughter. "Liyod, help him with the saddle. Alissa, take Carter back to the barn." She nodded helping him to his feet and the three of them removed the gear heading back towards the barn.
Sitting on the edge of the bed in the main house bedroom I dug inside one of the drawers finding an old badge that I didn’t carry on me anymore. Pulling out the badge from the wooden drawer I brushed my thumbs over the old silver Livestock Commissioner title that was in my hands. “My father should have passed the position down to you instead of me.”
“Nah. My daddy didn’t raise me to do politics, Kayce. He raised me to be a rancher, that's all I know.” Shrugging my shoulders I raised my head seeing my husband standing in the doorway.
“That’s all I know how to be too, darling.”
Kayce crossed the room ditching his boots crawling on the bed to sit behind me. He wrapped his arms around my waist. “I’ve been wanting to talk to you about something.”
“What’s on your mind?” He softly asked me.
Turning around so I was able to look into his deep brown eyes I draped my arms over his shoulders. “I think we should take down the fences that connect our family ranches. Let the two largest ranches combine into an even bigger one.”
“Alissa-“
I cut him off shortly knowing how it sounded. “I know it would create a larger target on both of our families backs but we won’t be two similar families fighting against the same enemies. We’d be one big family fighting against the people who want to take our land from us. So what do you think?”
“I think that’s a great idea. But what about your father?” Kayce knits his brows together.
Laying my head against his chest Kayce kisses the crown of my head. “I’ll talk with Alana. She always convinces him.” Kayce nodded, eyeing the Livestock Badge on the foot of the bed.
His father may think that he was meant to wear the badge. In reality though the woman in his arms was made for it more than he ever could be.
He just needed to convince his father of that now that he was Governor.

Dutton Ranch
Alissa’s pov
“Hey, hey, hey!” I hollered with my horse pushing a small herd of cattle into the wooden fence area so that the vet could check them out and make sure they don’t have any infections.  Carter ran over shutting the gate, closing them inside the pen with me tugging the reins of my horse so he stopped allowing me to dismount and tie the rope around the wooden fence post.
Footsteps came up to me where I felt tiny arms leap up into my arms.  “Momma!” Madeline’s hair was loosely flowing everywhere in the wind.
“Hi baby, what have you been up to this morning?” I lowered her down on her feet and on the dirt ground, bending down on a knee to be eye level with her.
She looked up into my eyes with a cheerful smile, holding up three fingers.  “Grandpa John let me eat three donuts and he said he’d take me out ridin’.”
“Did you ask daddy first?” I asked her since Kayce and I had agreed that our kids weren’t allowed to ride on a horse alone until they turned 13 years old.
She shook her head no.  “He’s busy with Tate.  So - can I mommy?”
“You have to promise me that you will do whatever Grandpa John tells you.  We don’t need you getting hurt.  Can you do that?” I held up my pinky and she lopped her pinky with me.
“Cross my heart and hope Horses are in Heaven.”
I grinned ruffling her hair.  “That’s my girl.”
Someone came riding up to us on horseback where we saw her grandfather John.  He pulled his horse to a stop offering his hands for me to lift up my daughter onto the saddle. “I won’t keep her out too long, Alissa.” He sat her in front of him on the horse, gently kicking his horse in the belly galloping off into the open fence.
“Please avoid the rivers, John!” I hollered with my hands around my mouth recalling when Tate had accidentally fallen in when John took him out for a ride.  Crossing my arms over my chest I sighed watching the pair ride off together.
I certainly missed my eldest daughter Faith but Madeline helped the hurt not be so horrible.  Tate sure had an attitude about him now but so did my husband when he started puberty.
“Hey, what’s up?” My phone started ringing with my sister in law’s picture appearing on my Home Screen.  Sliding the answer call button I put her on speaker.
“You’re gonna want to see who’s speaking on the tv.  Come inside the house.  I’m in the living room.”
Locking my phone I gently took my horse by the reins, taking him back to the barn.  Walking up the porch steps and into the house I found her seated on the living room couch with a whiskey glass in one hand and the tv remote in the other.  “So what did you want me to see so badly?”
“Just watch the screen.” She unpaused the tv where I recognized John’s former secretary Clara walk out in front of the podium in the State Capital building.
“Good afternoon Montana citizens, I must say when John Dutton retired and endorsed me to become the next Governor I was utterly shocked.  Four years later I am sad to be done with my term.  Thankfully though I am grateful to introduce the next soon to be Governor of our great state of Montana, Alana Lambert!” Clara announced, extending her hand outward to bring my sister out onto the huge stage where she waved to the large crowd.
“I’m happy she agreed to our plan.  My mother can remain the family lawyer until Alana is done with her term four years from now.”
Beth turned the tv volume down when the pair exited the stage not talking any questions from the press.  “If we keep the family in the Governor's seat we will never lose this place.”
“Next thing I’m going to be hearing from you is that Kayce and I need to pop out some more kids.  Cause Faith wants to be a veterinarian, Tate’s a rancher and Madeline is too young to know what she wants to do with her life.”
Beth chuckles while taking a sip from her glass.  “I’m sure you and my brother would have no problem making another baby.”
“Bethany!”
She sends me a look with a smirk.  “You’ve got nothing to worry about.  Maybe Faith’s boyfriend will want to be the Governor.”
“Boyfriend.  My daughter doesn’t have a boyfriend.”
Beth responded seconds before Faith’s name appeared on her phone screen.  “Yes, she does.  Look if you don’t believe me, talk to your daughter.”
“Aunt Beth, you were so right about the dress.”
Taking the phone from her hands I glared at my daughter over the video call.  “Why didn’t you tell me you had a boyfriend before you told her!”
“Momma!” Faith shrieked where I could see someone sitting beside her on what appeared to be a rooftop.  “Um - I was going to tell you.  It’s just if daddy found out he might come hurt him.”
I asked her simply.  “Can I see this boyfriend please?”
“Hi - hi Mrs. Dutton.  I’m Cooper, Cooper Norris.” A boy with shaggy dark brown hair nervously waved when she aimed the phone at him.  “My dad is Thomas Norris.”
Whispering to my sister in law I mouthed the words.  “Google his father.”
“Thomas Norris is a crisis manager executive for the large oil companies out in Texas.” Beth read the man’s description aloud from her computer screen.
I complimented the boy hearing footsteps entering the kitchen.  “That’s impressive.  Sounds like you’ve got a good one - Oh that’s your father.  I love you bye.”
“Bye guys.  Love you.” My daughter waved and ended the call a minute before Kayce came into the room.
“Who was that on the phone?” Kayce leaned his elbows on the back of the couch.
Beth had already shut her computer so he couldn’t see who we had googled, knowing it would be better for him to find out the secret later.  “It was Faith just telling us goodnight.  She said to give Mads a big hug for her and tell her she misses her.”
“Awe okay.  I’ll call her tomorrow.  I wanted to tonight but work was a pain in my ass so I’m beat.” Kayce removed his hat walking towards the staircase once hanging his hat up on a wall hook.  “Wake me up before dinner, yeah.”
Getting up from the couch I followed him up the stairs and into our bedroom watching him remove his shirt and his muddy boots before laying down underneath the covers.  “Do you want to talk about what happened at work?”
“Not really.  I’m just really tired.” He responded, staring up at the wooden ceiling with his arms crossed behind his head.
Removing my boots and my jeans I slid into the bed and underneath the sheets.  Draping one arm over the center of his stomach with my head laying in the crook of his neck.  “Do you care to hear about my day instead?”
“Shoot.” He replied.
Tracing patterns on his bare chest I softly spoke.  “Carter, Rip, Liyod and I tended to the new cattle that was brought in yesterday.  Tate has been studying the different techniques for the branding and calving season coming up in a few weeks.  Oh, Madeline and John went out for a ride and should be back before dinner.”
“That sounds like a better day than mine.  I had to sell off a family's cattle because the current owner died last night and we didn’t want the bank to take all the money the family had left.” Kayce explained twirling some of my hair in between his fingers while he started thinking back on his day.
Closing my eyes I muttered under my breath knowing he’d still hear me.  “I miss our Faithy Rae.”
“Yeah, I do too.” Kayce sucked in a breath thinking back on how he was raised.  “But we agreed this is how we protect this place.  By letting our children choose their own paths.”
Intertwining my hand with his free one I squeezed it gently knowing what he meant by that sentence.  “We’re doing the best we can raising our kids, Kayce.  That’s all we can do.” Regardless of how much we missed our daughter who was another state away we knew that not deciding who she would be in life like John had would be the best thing for them.

28 - Ticket to the Train Station
Tumblr media
Part 29
Raised Fair Share of Hell
holy crap y'all this is the longest chapter I have ever written for Yellowstone. So you'll have to come back for more 😉
Stomping into the living room Kayce and I entered into the living room of the Dutton house with so many emotions running through the back of our heads I knew it wouldn’t be long before one of us snapped over we had just had been told by one of John’s former workers in the Governor's office.
Seated on the long leather couch was my mother Eliza and my father in law John Dutton who both had concerned looks on their faces not knowing why they had been called here but would soon find out.
Alana was sitting in one of the armchairs keeping her gaze focused on me before we heard footsteps entering the room revealing Beth who looked like she wanted to bite into somebody’s neck if she could.  “What has that motherfucker done now?”
“He’s set to become Governor in a few days.  Apparently with John coming home for two months there’s some rule that the job and power get passed down to the next most powerful person in line whence just so happens to be your brother.”
Beth snapped a correction at me.  “He’s not my brother anymore.”
“So wait simply because John returned home to rest instead of immediately returning to his Governor duties he just lost the job that the people of Montana voted him into.  That doesn’t add up at all.” My sister brought a hand to her mouth resting her chin in the palm of her hand.
John picked up his glass filled with whiskey taking a long sip from it.  “He was taken out of the will after he gave an entire piece of how bad of a man I was long ago.  Now we just need to make sure when he goes away, he goes away for good.”
“He goes to the fucking train station, daddy.” Beth growls, pouring herself a glass of whiskey.
My mother Eliza sat upright glancing between our small group.  “Wait.  What’s the Train Station?  Is it an actual station?  Are you planning on running him out of town?”
“Um honey, can I speak to you for a second?” Kayce tugged my wrist gently leading me into the kitchen whispering to me.  “Did you never tell them about where the bad people who attack this place go?”
Brushing my hair out of my face I sucked in a breath.  “I didn’t think they would ever need to know.”
“Alissa!” Kayce ran his hands down his face.
Raising my hands up in surrender I begged my husband to understand why I hadn’t told my mother or sister about the trash can we refereed as the Train Station.  “Look I know how it looks but I didn’t think they needed to know.  I mean Lee could have told Alana, but it was his choice not to, not mine.  As for my mother, she likely wouldn’t approve.  If my father was still alive you’d be lying in the ground dead from one of his shotguns.”
“So how likely are they going to help us get rid of Jamie once they tell them what it really is huh?” Kayce whisper-shouted at me pointing his index finger at my chest.
Hitting my hands on my thighs I lowered my gaze to my muddy boots.  “I don’t know.  I’m hoping they won’t freak out but that’s as far as my brain has gone.”
“I guess let’s just go see how this goes.  I’ll let my father tell’em.” Kayce removed his hat hanging it on the wall before we went back into the large living room seeing all eyes on us.  My husband gestured to his father.  “Tell’em dad.”
John pushed himself up his seat on the couch standing and facing the two women in the room whose lives were about to change the minute they found out this family secret.  “It’s a trash can for everyone who’s attacked us.  It lies in a jurisdictional dead zone in a county with a population of exactly zero.  Hence no jury of your peers and no court for a change in venue.”
“So you mean that you - the men who killed our father went there.” My sister covered her mouth holding back tears.
John bent his head down wiping at his mouth with his freehand.  “Yes, Lana.  The men who attacked our ranches went there.”
“Oh god.  I might be sick.” My sister got up rushing to the bathroom.
John focused his gaze on my mother who had her mouth opened in utter shock, not having said a word so he kept explaining the deep dark secret.  “We found a way to circumvent the consequences of defending ourselves.  I’m shocked we need a way, but we do.  We always have.  Unless we’re willing to walk away from 120 years of our family bleeding into this ground we always will.”
“John-“ Eliza began crying, still not processing everything he had said.
The owner of the largest ranch in Montana spared his neighbor a disappointed look.  “I’m sorry you had to find out this way, Eliza.”
My mother bolted up from the couch running out the front door slamming the front door.  Leaving my husband’s side I followed after my mother knowing she was struggling with this.  The front door shut behind me where I saw my mother leaning over the railing clutching the front of her chest.  “Mom.  Mom - I’m - I’m sorry.  I should have told you about this-“
“How did you find out about this and not tell me and your father about this?” She spun on her feet, tears streaming down her face.
Dropping my hands down to my sides I take a few steps towards her hoping she doesn’t hit me in response.  “Kayce decided he’d rather not lose by lying to me but simply by the actions that he makes himself.  The night we had wed he told me the secret.  I don’t - I wish I had a better reason for why I didn’t tell you but I don’t.”
“I’m relieved your father isn’t around to hear this.” My mother sat down in the nearest chair.
Twiddling my fingers together I apologized softly to her and to myself I suppose.  “I’m sorry.  I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth from the start.”
The front door creaked open causing me to glance over my shoulder seeing my husband waving me back inside the house.  “Beth, has a plan.  If she’s up to hearing it.”
“I think I’ve traumatized her enough for one day.”
My mother rose from her seat walking past me and into the cabin.  “Let’s see what this plan is.  How’s Alana?”
“She’s back from the bathroom sitting on the couch.  Beth made her some tea to help calm her nerves.” Kayce answered her question letting us walk inside before he shut the door behind himself following us back to the main room.
Beth was sitting in front of the window seal, Alana was on the couch and my mother had sat down right beside her.  Finally my gaze focused on my father in law who was standing in the center front of the burning fireplace with one of his hands resting on the mantle and his head hanging low, eyeing his boots.
“John.  What exactly is the plan here?” I took two steps forward feeling the intense air in the living room.
Beth brought an un-lit cigarette to her lips.  “We’re going to give Jamie one option and if he refuses we will then kill him.”
“I’ve gotta teach you some things really quick.  I’ll fill you in on the way to his office.” Kayce informed me eyeing his sister.  He headed upstairs grabbing a few things leaving me alone with our families.
Beth came over to me taking my hands into her own, looking over to the picture on the wall above the fireplace. “I need you to lie to Jamie.  Come up with something he won’t be able to think isn’t true.  That is the most important part of the plan.” The picture she was staring at was the one that had me, Kayce, Tate and Faith all gathered around a campfire that John had taken a couple years ago.
“Wait, what exactly is the plan?” I questioned her, still unaware of the whole plan they had cooked up.
My sister in law turned on her heels going over to my sibling and our mother before my husband took me out to his truck.  “To get rid of Jamie.  That’s the plan.  My brother will fill you in on everything else that has to happen for the ranch to be safe.”
Kayce parked the Livestock Commissioner truck in an empty parking lot near the government state house building.  Climbing out of the passenger seat of the vehicle I shut the door gently, going around the tailgate to meet up with my husband.  “What exactly are we doing out here in the parking lot?  I thought we were going to handle Jamie.”
“I need to teach you some defense moves that you’ll have to use on my brother.  He would suspect me coming to see him because I listen to Beth.  But you’re different, he’ll listen to you.” He explained reaching inside his brown jacket, taking out a handgun, holding it out towards me.  “Take this.  Just in case you need a weapon.”
“Kayce , I - what do I need to know?” I reached for it, pushing the handgun in my back pocket hiding it underneath my orange jacket.
“When I would do snatches in Afghanistan you would approach someone from behind -  make contact with the carotid artery. “ He wrapped one of his arms around my throat, choking me lightly once he had put my back to face his front.  I gasped before he removed his arm and I was able to properly breathe again.  “The longer you deprive the blood to the brain, the longer the subject stays unconscious.  That’s what we need you to do to him.”
Locking eyes with my husband I sucked in a breath putting on the bravest look I could manage.  Kayce dropped me off at the front door and pulled away watching me walk inside the federal government building.  Walking past Jamie’s receptionist I went straight into his office slamming the door closed where Jamie quickly got up from his desk chair.  “Alissa.  What are you doing here?  Is everything okay?”
“Child protective services has taken my daughter from me!” The words flew from my mouth and I began sobbing the most tears I could muster.
Jamie came over to me grabbing my shoulders, concern clear all over his face.  “What.  How, how did this happen?”
“The detectives found my fingerprints on the gun used to shoot your father.  They’re coming to arrest me right now and take her away.” Putting my face in my hands I collapsed onto my knees crying.  “Please Jamie.  Please help me - she’s my only child.”
He bent down offering me a hand to help me stand upright.  “What can I do?  I’ll do anything for Faith.”
“Even attempting to murder her grandpa because you stupidly believed a Market Equides woman cared about what you wanted.” Lifting my head up from my hands I glared up at the Dutton lawyer.
Jamie stared at me, still very much confused.  “What, what, how do you know about me and Sarah?”
“What do you think, your sister.  Now I know what you’re going to do the second I make my next move but remember that you are not the one in control here.  We are, not you.”
Jamie took a step backwards slightly.  “We.  Who’s we?”
“Keep your mouth shut and walk out like nothing is wrong.  Don’t you dare tell your receptionist to call the Capital police.” Drawing out the handgun from under my jacket I quickly grabbed his shoulder, spinning him around. I pressed the barrel into his back.
He whimpered, opening the office door while I led him towards the main entrance door.  “Alissa, I would never hurt you and Faith intentionally. Please let me explain-“
“You should have remembered that before you made the police put me away in prison for something I didn’t commit.” Shoving him outside the double doors he stumbled out into the parking lot falling into my husband’s chest who was standing outside his truck.
Jamie muttered under his breath.  “Kayce.  Kayce, kayce, please understand I didn’t mean for this to happen.  She - she’s poison.  She’s lying to both of you.”
“You have just as many secrets as our father does.  I’m sorry to say but we can’t just take your word anymore, brother.  Do it.” Kayce nodded, yanking his brother up onto his feet by the collar of his shirt.
Jamie got cut off shortly once I wrapped one arm around his throat, choking him.  “Do what - aggg!” He clawed at my arm but I felt his body go limp meaning he was unconscious in my arms with my husband catching his body.
Sitting in the passenger seat of my husband’s truck I kept my focus on the road in front of us.  Heavy thick silence was the sound that was inside our vehicle that evening.  Kayce was driving us there with the others already there waiting for us.
Kayce pulled the truck off the road until we were near the cliff edge where he turned the engine off looking over at me with a weak look.  “Are you sure you’re up for this, Lissa?”
“I’m already involved in this, Kayce.  I just won’t be the one dying to finish it.” I responded back to him unlocking the door, getting out of the truck and closing the door behind me.  Kayce followed going to the truck bed flinging it open dragging Jaime out the back of it.
Jamie groaned, blinking his eyes open seeing me and Kayce standing over his body on the dirt.  “What are we doing here - no, no, no.  I shouldn’t be here.”
“Actually Jamie you should have been here a long time ago.” Jaime, Kayce and I all shifted in our heads in the direction of the voice watching Beth stroll into the light of moon.  “I’m going to give you two options.  Option One : we put your ass down in that canyon with the other people who have tried to come for the ranch.  Option Two : you turn yourself into the police and confess to everything which will result in you spending the rest of your life in prison.  I’ll give you a minute to think about it but you aren’t leaving here without making a choice.”

The buzzing sound woke me up the next morning. Pushing myself to sit upright on the cold stone floor I saw an officer standing outside my cell. Forcing myself to stand on my feet I eyed the officer slightly annoyed. “How long exactly are you going to keep me locked up in here?”
“You have a visitor.” He didn’t answer my question and instead opened the cell door. “Turn around with your hands behind your back.”
Doing what he had told me I bit my lip hoping my visitor would be getting me out of here and they had found the person who ordered the attack on my father in law. The officer locked handcuffs on my wrists leading me outside and down the hallways till we reached a room he had to unlock with keys. “Kayce! Alana! Thank God.” I gasped in relief seeing two familiar faces that I knew wouldn’t back down from this fight.
“Sit down, Ms. Dutton.” A detective who sat across from the pair told me, pointing to the empty chair beside my sister. The officer unlocked my cuffs letting me sit down before he exited the room. Eyeing the corner near me I saw a red light turn on the camera that was pointing directly at us meaning they were recording everything now. The detective leaned forward introducing himself. “My name is Detective Dillord. I’m studying the Governor's open case and so I decided it was time to get your side of the story. So start from the beginning if you wouldn’t mind.”
Leaning back against the chair I glared at the detective but knew what I saw two days ago. “I had gone over to get John’s signature on a document that concerned both of our families' ranches. I didn’t intend to spend the night, but we got distracted just talking so I passed out in his spare bedroom.”
“How do you remember finding the Governor shot in the bathroom?”
Tapping my fingers together I started explaining more. “I had a baby from a young age which means I have to go pee more than I used to in the middle of the night. Anyways, I must have started the men who were holding him down because I heard them drop something on the floor so I went running to investigate. I found a needle of some sort-”
“This needle?” The detective opened his folder, spinning it around to show me. The vial was filled with some type of clear liquid inside of it.
Kayce raised a brow eyeing the picture. “Did you test it? What did toxicology come back with?”
“I can't disclose that information with a suspect present.” The detective replied.
Rolling my eyes I couldn't stand being referred to as a suspect. We needed to clear my name off their list as soon as possible. “When I found them in his bedroom one of them charged right at me and we got into a fist fight while the other two dragged John to the bathroom. I had managed to knock the one guy out and ran into the bathroom. One guy was putting the gun in John's hand about to make it look like suicide until I tackled him to the ground.”
Alana nervously eyed my husband when he asked me questions rather than the detective. “How badly did they hurt you? Did the other guy try and kill you?” We hadn't gotten to even talk really before I was immediately arrested by police.
“One of them managed to grab the gun and shoot me here.” Lifting up my shirt I showed them where I still wrapped myself with whatever fabric I could find to stop the bleeding.
Alana covered her mouth. “Oh God.”
“John - John started waking up and said my name seeing the intruders. The other guy picked up the guy and went to shoot him in the head but I jumped on his back choking him so he misfired. Later through the fight I got thrown on the floor one of them shot me. But in the end I managed to shoot both of them before they killed me or the Governor of Montana.”
Kayce rose from his chair demanding to the detective. “We have to take her to the hospital. That bullet could still be inside of her. It could kill her.”
“I’ll take that into consideration. Ms. Lambert, can I speak with you in my office privately?” Detective Dillard rose from his chair and my sister rose from her seat walking into the hallway. He eyed me and my husband before he ordered him out of the room. “Commissioner Dutton, please wait outside in the lobby. I’ll come find you once we are done talking.”
Kayce slowly got up from his chair giving me a weak smile, leaning down he whispered in my ear. “I love you. We’re going to fix this.”
“I love you too.” I replied back watching him close the door behind himself leaving me in the room by myself for about two hours. With my head laying on the table on my crossed arms I woke up from my nap hearing the door opened and closed revealing just my sister coming inside the room. “So what is happening now?”
She sat down across from me in the former detective’s chair, sitting her folder down in front of her before clasping her hands together. “I have some good news and bad news. Which do you want first?”
“Good news, I guess.”
My older sister bites her lip. “The detective agreed that you should be transported to the hospital to be treated for your injuries.”
“So he believes me and they’re dropping the charges?”
Shaking her head no , her weak smile completely dropped from her face. “Unfortunately, no. They’re going to keep you here until they can prove what you said is true. They need to question the other witness who was at the scene during the attack.”
“The other witness. He’s referring to John. But - but he’s in the hospital.” Knitting my brows together I was baffled by her words, not liking the direction that this was going in at all.
Alana ran a hand through her loose hair, slumping her shoulders heavily hating that she couldn’t be much more helpful in this specific situation. “They’d need to question John. In order to back up the information you told them. So for now you have to remain here.”
“What current condition is my father in law in?” The question flew from my mouth.
“He’s in a coma.” She answered me with tearful eyes. “I’m so sorry, Alissa.”
Burying my face in my hands I had no clue what to do. I didn’t want to be stuck here. I wanted- needed to see my kids and my husband. “But - but there’s a chance he might not wake up. What - what am I going to do?” My sister began sniffing back tears. She knew Kayce wasn’t going to rest until his entire family was back home and the ranch was safe from people who wanted it gone.

Sitting on one of the wooden benches inside the small cell I stared at the stone wall in front of me. I wasn't sure what time it was but I knew the sun had set a few hours before Kayce and I had gotten arrested for partying at the mayor's house that his daughter had hosted. We thought we'd get a scolding for the noise and that would be it, until they found the booze that someone exited the kitchen with.
Kayce was laid down asleep beside me peacefully until the cell door got opened by an officer who raised his voice to wake him up. “Wake up, Dutton. You've got a visitor to see you both.” Kayce rubbed the sleep from his eyes getting up from the bench at the same time as me, before we followed the officer outside and into the police station lobby.
Shifting my gaze over the lobby I was expecting my father to be the one to bail us out. Most of the time he always did and that's why he never cared for the youngest Dutton, especially before he got me pregnant as a teenager. Except this time was different, the person standing at the front desk was none other than Kayce’s father John. “Dad, you bailed us out. How did you even know we got arrested?” Kayce questions his father being confused as I was.
“Donney called me. He was going to call your father but I told him he didn't need to worry.” He responded before Sheriff Haskell came out of the backroom with a set of eyes, one by one unlocking our handcuffs that we were wearing.
Bending my head towards the carpet floor I apologized knowing we had quite the record of this happening. “I'm sorry, Sheriff Haskell.”
“Yeah, sorry sheriff.” Kayce apologized shortly after me, sparing a glance to his father. “I'm really sorry about this dad.”
The current livestock Commissioner tipped his black cowboy hat at us. “I know you two are sorry. I'll talk with your father and convince him to not shoot my son when we come over for dinner tomorrow night so he can apologize.”
“Yes, sir.” Kayce nodded knowing what he was saying wasn't a suggestion, it was an order.
John eyed his old friend once we had been handed our cell phones back and our wallets. “Are their charges going to be dropped, Donney?”
“This is the last time I can cover this up, John. They’ve got two years before they turn eighteen. Once they’re adults I can’t hide if they break the law in this state. Have a good night and please keep them out of trouble.” Haskell turned on his heels, shutting his office door leaving the three of us in the lobby entrance.
John shifted his gaze between me and my best friend. “I’m going to tell you right now if you two get arrested anymore after this incident you’re on your own. Mark sure you’ve got good lawyers.”
“John, can I stay at your house tonight? My daddy won’t be happy with me for lying that I was at a friend's house to study.” I rubbed the back of my neck feeling very nervous.
He waved his hand walking out the main sliding glass door. “Sure. Call your mother when we get there so she doesn’t worry.”
“Thank you, sir.” I slowly followed him outside but not before Kayce interviewed his hand with mine. We wouldn’t get in trouble with the law until years later when someone tried to kill my future father in law.
One of the officers opened the door while another led me inside with my hands still bound between my back. My hair was tousled in front of my face and I knew I likely had some of John’s blood stained on my clothing. The officer flung opened a cell door gently shoving me inside after removing the cuffs from my wrists where I collapsed onto the stone ground.
“I get one phone call. I didn’t have anything to do with the murder attempt on the Governor's life.” Scrambling to my feet standing upright I clasped my hands around the small metal bars.
The officer leaned his back against the wall on the outside of the jail cell. “Be quiet, girl.”
“You have to believe me. Sheriff Haskell would have.” I snapped back with angry tears in my eyes.
The officer crossed the room, his movements quick and his hands clenched into fists at his side. “He’s gone. You can’t use your friendship with the late sheriff anymore to save yourself from facing the law.” The guy spun on his feet closing the door leaving me alone.
Resting my forehead against the bars I mumbled to myself praying that my father in law would be okay and we would find out who was hurting our family. “John, I know you’re a fighter. You’ve gotta fight like hell through this.”
Kayce had dropped off the kids at their grandma’s house knowing it was better for them to not see their grandpa John in whatever horrible state he was in at the moment. Him and Beth ran inside the sliding hospital doors and she nearly launched herself over the counter to talk with the women at the front desk. “Where the hell is my daddy?”
“You’re daddy, ma'am.” The woman gave a confused look.
His sister clenching her hands into fists ready to pounce. “Do you not know who we are, you little bitch. Turn on your freaking TV and you'd know who the police just brought into your hospital!”
“Woah, woah, easy. I've got this.” Kayce gently pushed his sister behind him, approaching the woman with a much calmer tone. “We're looking for Governor John Dutton’s room.”
The nurse scrambled to her feet leading them quickly down a long hallway on the second floor that was marked as the ICU, Intense Care Unit. “Apologies, Commissioner. They have been moving him from one surgery to the next. I'll find the doctor to come speak with you both.”
“Look up on our fucking family research while you're at it!” Beth hollered watching the nurse walk away. She heard her brother begin walking into the hospital room where she quietly asked now in a softer tone. “How is he?”
Kayce didn't utter a word for a while. His boots screeched across the tile floor until he stood over his father’s bedside. “The kids definitely wouldn't be able to see this.” His father was laying on his back hooked up to so many hospital machines. His vitals on the screen didn't seem to be strong and he couldn't tell if his father was awake now or was the machine the only thing keeping him alive.
“Daddy - I'm going to fucking kill Jamie.” Beth looked around her younger brother covering her mouth at the horrible sight before her.
Kayce glanced at her with a warning. “Don't say anything like that until we're home. There's too many people around.”
“You just don't want to believe it. But I know he did it.” Beth took a step closer getting in his brother’s face.
He growled under his breath, ending his sentence short. “Bethany, enough. Alissa already got arrested for a crime she didn't commit. I don’t need you getting thrown in prison for killing someone until we have -”
“Kayce, Beth.” The pair sharply turned their heads seeing a doctor with auburn hair enter the room with a sad expression across his facial features. “First off I would like to say how sorry I am that this happened. Second, we are doing everything we can to make sure he makes it out of this.”
Beth snapped out a question. “How is he doing?”
“We had to remove a bullet from his neck. Another bullet also hit his artery so we almost weren't able to stop the bleeding. His recovery will be a slow one. Currently he’s in a coma and we aren’t sure when or if he will wake up-“
“Did you notice these bruises on his neck when you did the surgery?” Kayce interrupted the doctor pointing at his father’s neck. “This can’t be suicide. We know our father, everybody does. This has to be a homicide.”
The doctor came up beside him and a small gasp could be heard from his lips. “Shit! We didn't notice that.”
“Beth, come here for a second.”
She raised a brow at her brother. “What for?”
“I’m not going to hurt you. I'm just gonna show the doctor something.”
She walked over to her brother who turned her around so her back was to his front. “When we would do snatches in Afghanistan you would approach someone from behind - make contact with the carotid artery. “ He wrapped one of his arms around her throat, choking her lightly until she went unconscious and he lowered her body onto the hospital floor.
“What the hell, little brother.” Beth slowly woke up lifting her head up from the floor.
Kayce helped her back up on her feet before focusing on his father’s doctor. “Sorry, sis. The longer you deprive the blood to the brain, the longer the subject stays unconscious.”
“There’s bruising on both sides of his neck.” The doctor eyed John’s neck while he was still asleep. “How would you perform one on a subject that was sleeping?”
Beth took a step backwards from her brother and the doctor. “There’s no way I’m doing that again!”
“You’d need three men. One to hold the legs below the calves to eliminate any leverage. The second would restrain the arms, and another to execute the choke. We would never use a choke hold on someone we’d already restrained. We’d just zip-tie them and take them off.”
Beth ran her hands down her face in shock and was getting more frustrated. “They held him down. That motherfucker.”
“I’ll keep you updated if anything changes with your father. I’m sorry I didn't notice they held him down and that would be a big factor in why he fell into a coma even after we closed the bleeding wounds.” The doctor explained hearing a phone ringing before Kayce realized it was his so he stepped out into the hallway.
“I got Beth’s phone call that my sister is in jail. What the hell happened last night. I mean she just went over to get his signature to join our property and yours together.” He heard his wife’s sister's voice come through the phone.
He sighed leaning his back against the wall behind him. “I don’t know. When we got to the mansion we barely got to talk before they were shoving her in a police car.”
“Well I’m heading to the police station to speak with her if you want to meet me there.” Alana responded and he could hear a car door get shut.
He nodded even though she couldn’t see it. “It’s a good thing you and Eliza are the family lawyers. I’m not sure I can trust my brother Jamie anymore.”
“Look, let's not talk about this anymore over the phone. Meet me at the station.” Alana didn’t want to waste anymore time on the phone.
He agreed as his sister exited their father’s room, hanging up the call. “I’m on my way. That was Alana. I’m going to meet her there but I want you to stay here with our father.”
“Okay. Go get our Lissa out of jail.” Beth nodded in understanding and Kayce headed down the hallway out to his truck going to the police station.
