‘When’s the White Haired Anime Boy Going to Appear?’
For awhile, I often wondered about the phenomena of ‘When is the white-haired anime boy going to appear?’ posts during the heyday of Eva content on tumblr (2013-14). If you were around the Eva fandom on tumblr, or new to the show around that time like I was, you were probably bewildered too. It’s part of what got me into the show other than the character struggles and interesting worldbuilding.
Sure, you could chalk it up to people wanting to see more of Kaworu’s cute, but awkward mannerisms coupled with cryptic, though nonthreatening words. The bath scene of episode 24 is heavily quotable. There was also the influx of ‘headless’ memes (see: Pop Goes My Heart!).
But Eva was watched during many people’s adolescent years. High and low years. Critical years.
Evangelion itself is no stranger to struggles in formative years.
(talks about abuse under the cut)
I’ve always read Shinji as an audience surrogate because of how he’s at the center of these issues. Many of us have a Gendo: We hate them, yet we seek their validation, because unfortunately, they’re all we have. And yet they’re so emotionally cold and self-serving.
Much of the series sees Shinji in less than optimal environments. His father is cold and distant. While Misato takes him in, she also makes him (and Asuka) fight angels due to her issues with her own father. Shinji and Asuka’s relationship within the household isn’t the greatest, either. They’re both emotionally damaged kids who can’t really properly sort through the baggage due to their environment. They’re mainly shouldering the burden of adult issues during their early teen years.
They’re face to face with the open horrors of war.
Kaworu comes in toward the tail end of the series. He asks nothing of Shinji but the narrative hardly portrays him as the sudden, immaculate savior. They get to know each other, and due to his deep traumas, Shinji is of course wary because being open means getting hurt again. So he puts his guard up. The more they interact, the more they both get to know each other.
‘Why am I telling all this to Kaworu?’
This is less of a wariness of who Kaworu is and more of Shinji realizing he spilled part of his heart about his strained relationship with his father. Shinji realizes that he feels open, but not vulnerable. Kaworu feels the same way, replying to Shinji’s answers with ‘I think I may have been born to meet you, Shinji-kun.’
I sound like a broken record saying this but, Kaworu isn’t just his own person. He represents an ideal. This is a point I’m totally partisan to. That tinges of kindness can and do exist, even when one’s world is hell.
On that end, I believe that, at least in the original series, that Hikari is Asuka’s Kaworu. Asuka’s guarded persona manifests as being proud and somewhat brash, but it’s a product of neglect. This worsens when she comes to understand in her environment that her accomplishments mean next to nothing. That she’s replaceable.
The adults in Eva, even the adults of the adults get away with murder and seeing that as a victim of abuse drives a visceral rage I haven’t felt in years. And I’m sure this ire, this rising embitterment stirs in you too, if you ever lived in such an environment.
A lot of us were forced to wade through toxic environments for years while growing up. Had our share of bad relationships that still leave marks to this day. A lot of us are victims chasing the closure that will sadly, never come because many of the people who hurt you walk away when they have much to answer for. Even if they do answer, is there any guarantee that they’ll be genuine?
When Shinji is with Kaworu and when Asuka is around Hikari they’re far less guarded. For the latter, we see a side of Asuka not seen before: one that’s tender. One that doesn’t feel burdened and otherwise ignored.
And that too, could describe that someone in our lives. The world doesn’t feel as daunting. You realize your worth and that you can be yourself when you’re around them. The barriers come down slowly and you stop saying sorry. You don’t feel as if they’re demanding that that happens. It simply just. Does. The people you hate or ignore your grievances seem insignificant in your life, even if for a moment.
When we ask ‘When’s the white haired anime boy going to appear?’ what we actually mean is ‘When is our support system going to appear?’
I know that one day you will find your Kaworu. You deserve better than an apology. You deserve peace.

The anti-Komahina copypasta of all time pt 4/4
[In our last bat-episode, we met: lazy theology! Also more hard-to-read annotated images.]
7. Nagito's Ume pheromones Biological and psychological Inspection: [src]
8. While taking a closer look I always wondered why Nagito took the false path. How did he become involved in impurity and sociopathic actions. Could his "desperate" childhood be the blame for his strange unnatural demeanor? [src]
+I'm 100% certain now everything regarding his childhood is made up by him (death of his dog, parents 50% chance it's true) in order to seek for attention especially the guy he's inlove with before his death. [src]
+There has been NO evidence supporting the fact he has gone through traumatic events and so on in the game. I'm sick and tired of you purifying this sick psychopath who is the one traumatizing his classmates, falling victim im his spiderweb, especially Hajime. [src]
Interpretation: Him being attracted to the same sex could or could not be caused by the developmemt of his pheromones. Analysis: Effeminate men tend to be submissive in this case Nagito is dominant and submissive supported by my previous anatomization who seeks for anal coitus. [src]
8. Character song analysis (pt.2) Yes,I am aware I have already analyzed this song in my previous thread, however there is more to it I haven't shared with you.
We all know this song is characterized by Nagito's inner thoughts of homosexual activities he wants to outlive with the victim (Hajime/Izuru). I found another traslation of his character song which apparently is more accurate. [src]
I have rewatched Envangelion a bunch of times and was suprised when this scene popped up in mind in relation to this diabolic song. Now everything is clear now. It was indeed the creator's intention for Nagito to be portrayed in the Image of this homo angel (feminine version)+ [src]
Kaworu had emotionally abused Shinji into falling for him which can be compared to the relationship of Hajime and Nagito. Shinji and Hajime are the victims and Nagito and Kaworu are the manipulators. I don't understand why I'm just now realizing it. I really am a genius. [src]
The general character song analysis: This took me a while to sum everything up but I managed to. [src]
That might be the end of my thread. I want everyone to be aware that I want to spread awareness in our messed up society ruined by sins and idolatry. You have no idea how much I suffer seeing young children idolize evil characters that aren't intended to be idolized+ [src]
Yet I come across people even innocent people such as my sister being brainwashed by tarnished fictional characters, holding hostillity towards our Lord. Do you not understand how nauseating you have to be to cause a war in our world. To idololize literal psychopaths, terrorists+ [src]
And so on for amusemnet? I couldn't care less if their fictional characters. The point is, you are discriminating the gospel, the bible and the tradition for DECADES. This generation is collapsing if we don't improve as fast as we can.+ [src]
If our society refuses to develop you leave me no other chance than hoping to participate in the election and pray for God I'll be the one running for President of the United States. You can giggle all you want but I can't see our world to break apart. [src]
+ I can't see our world breaking apart, piece by piece followed by the sins you carry within you. Impurity must be defeated and victory needs to shine as bright as the sun. I know we can change our world and make my holy family proud who are counting on me. [src]
[The end of the toxic submissive homoerotic sequel! For dessert, enjoy a couple of the Twitter replies.]
[And, yes, ume means plum. I'm pretty sure that one at least is a troll.]

My list of evil/morally grey traumatised gay boys:
-Vanitas (Kingdom Hearts)
-Shadow the hedgehog (Sonic)
-Bass/Forte (Megaman/Rockman)
-Kaworu (Evangelion) (He is not traumatised himself but he serves to traumatise the protagonist even more. Does that count?)
-Riku (Kingdom Hearts) (Baby boy is the only one on that list that went to therapy and I am proud of him 👏👏)
-Thief King Bakura (yu-gi-oh!)
-Yami Marik (yu-gi-oh!)
-Homura (Madoka) (She is a girl but she got herself fucked up enough to be allowed on this list. She killed god and became satan for lesbianism.)

Neon Genesis Evangelion Part 2 and Embracing Queer Masculinity
Where the beginning of Evangelion sets up Shinji as a character who goes against the concept of the traditional hegemonic man, the rest of Evangelion shows Shinji struggling with his own identity as he tries to become someone who he doesn’t hate anymore.
At first we see him use Asuka as a model for who he wants to become. Asuka is a direct contrast to Shinji’s character; where he shies away from violence, Asuka is not afraid to use it and is even proud of her ability to do so. When one of Shinji’s classmates starts hitting on her, she has no hesitation in smacking him to teach him a lesson. She also does not wait for Katsuragi’s permission to start fighting the angel like Shinji wanted to do, but instead gleefully seizes the opportunity to fight and prove her capabilities. Asuka herself also notices the difference between who she is and who Shinji is and often mocks him for it. When she first meets him she says later that she expected him to be so much more but instead she’s disillusioned and thinks he’s a letdown. She also scolds him for being a wimp for being afraid in battle, and as she gets to know him better, starts telling him off for always apologizing and taking on the blame too. With help from Asuka’s constant mocking of his character and the confidence boost from doing well in a battle simulation, Shinij tries to go against his natural disposition and “man up” in a sense, becoming the strong, confident, leadership-taking hegemonic man. He proclaims that fighting is a man’s job and that he can lead the other EVA pilots without problem, but when he takes his confidence too far and becomes trapped within the angel, he comes to the realization that that kind of person is not who he is at all and that trying to be so is an impossible task and only makes him hate himself more. In the end his inner self tells him that he needs to embrace who he is rather than run away from it.
We see him begin to take the first steps in accepting himself with Kaworu. Kaworu right off the bat is someone who seems very similar to Shinij himself: he is soft-spoken, effeminate looking, and gentle. He constantly assures Shinij, validating his wants and feelings that the others might have called cowardly or foolish, and tells him that having a gentle personality and a delicate heart is not a bad thing, but a strength in its own way. He understands and sees Shinji in ways that no one else has before, which is part of why it hits Shinji so deeply when Kaworu told him that he liked him, something no one else had said before. Even after Kaworu betrayed him and had to be killed by Shinji, Shinji proves both how deep his own self-hatred goes and how much he admired Kaworu as someone who has grown confidence in not being a hegemonic man by insisting on how much better of a person Kaworu was than him and repeating softly that Kaworu was the one that should have survived, not him.
Up till the very last episode Shinji still feels a disconnect between who he is and who he thinks he needs to be to be wanted or of value to anyone. Within his consciousness he states that he feels like everyone would be fine if he disappeared and that at his core he is an unwanted child. He insists that he has nothing to be proud of and even wonders if he even has a real self. His only worth, he feels, is being an EVA pilot, something that he hates being. These deep-rooted insecurities seem to be confirmed by his friends, who shout at him that he’s self-centered and a coward and runs away from people and refuses to believe that they want him. When they say that they hate him and can’t stand him, he agrees with them, saying that of course they’d hate him when he already hates himself. He says that he wants to give everything he has into being an EVA pilot because that’s the only thing people see any worth in him for, and when warned that he will lose himself by doing it, he says that there’s nothing of himself that he wants to keep to begin with. However, the only way that Shinji is able to leave this space of insecurity and self-hatred and loneliness and depression is to finally accept himself for who he is and realize that it’s okay to not want to change who he is, that it’s okay to want to be himself and be confident in being himself, even if it differs from the norm.
I think what Evangelion tries to teach us is that our identity isn’t something that can be defined by society’s guidelines. When Shinji tried to act like how society said a man should act, he was miserable and only got himself into more trouble. When he still felt like he wasn’t measuring up to who he thought he should be, his self-hatred crippled him and made him think that he was worthless. It was only when he became comfortable with his differences that he was finally able to break free from his doubts and join his friends on equal footing. Likewise our identity should not be based on society-determined standards but instead should come from who we truly want to be and feel comfortable being.

The Anime Binge-Watcher's Queer Anime Ship Tournament: Round 1 Results!
The first round has come to an end, and what a round it was! Huge blowouts, shocking reversals, hard choices, and many worthy opponents struck down by even worthier ones before they even got a chance to shine. This is already proving exactly as chaotic as I'd hoped, and I couldn't be more proud of y'all for it. So before we head on to round 2, here's a breakdown of how all the match-ups went and the most dramatic moments!
Most Voted Poll: Far and away the poll with the most votes was Bumbleby vs ToukoYuu, with a staggering 797 votes! No surprises there; both these ships are true all-timers with incredibly passionate fanbases who battled back and forth until the Bloomers pulled into a lead the RWBYheads just couldn't make up. But it was a well-fought battle! Second place goes to ChisaTaki vs MadoHomu with an equally impressive 698 votes, and NanoFate vs KobaTohru pulled an impressive third place with 497 votes.
Least Voted Poll: In a shock I didn't see coming, KukuFuuka vs KumiRei came in last with a measly 164 votes. I guess it's no surprise more people haven't heard of the criminally underrated Aquatope, but Kumirei??? One of the beloved gay ships in all of 2010s anime and so few people turned out for it? The mind just boggles, I tell ya. Second place goes to CocoPapi vs The Doukyuusei Boys with just 183, with AoiHina vs YukiTouya coming just behind with a 188 vote third place.
Biggest Blowout: Meanwhile, in the complete opposite of a shock, UtenAnthy absolutely demolished Ymir x Historia with a staggering 90.2% to 9.8% victory. Listen, I love my Attack on Titan girls, but they never stood a chance against one of the founding titans of queer anime love stories. Ditto poor ShamiMomo who went up against the newly crowned patron saint of anime lesbians SuleMio and got stomped 87.1% to 12.9% in second place. Compared to them, YukiTouya's third place finish against AoiHina with 74.5% to 25.5% doesn't seem like much, does it?
Closest Nail-Biter: In another big shock for me, the blowout victory I expected for NanoFate turned into the narrowest of losses against Kobayashi x Tohru, 50.5% to 49.5%- only a single percentage apart! Clearly, I underestimated how powerful the dragon lesbians have become in the years since their arrival. Kase x Yamada also just barely eked out a win against ReoMabu with a 51.2% to 48.8% second place finish. Third place went to Aoi Hana vs RekiLanga with a narrow 54.8% to 45.2% victory for RekiLanga.
As for me personally? Believe it or not, it was almost a perfect split! 9 of my picks made it through while the other 7 fell short. I'm shocked how close that ended up! Hopefully I'll have better luck in round 2, yeah? So gird your loins, everyone, cause the next round of voting will start very shortly!
COMPLETE STATS
1-A: Wei Wuxian x Lan Wangji (44.9%) vs Adachi x Shimamura (55.1%), 243 votes
1-B: Chisato x Takina (27.8%) vs Madoka x Homura (72.2%), 698 votes
1-C: Kase x Yamada (51.2%) vs Reo x Mabu (48.8%), 426 votes
1-D: Eiji x Ash (58.7%) vs Malori x Velverosa (41.3%), 283 votes
1-E: Suletta x Miorine (87.1%) vs Shamiko x Momo (12.9%) 325 votes
1-F: Anis x Euphie (29.7%) vs Claudine x Maya (70.3%) 316 votes
1-G: Aoi x Hinata (25.5%) vs Yukito x Touya (74.5%) 188 votes
1-H: Nanoha x Fate (49.5%) vs Tohru x Kobayashi (50.5%) 497 votes
1-I: Nozomi x Mizore (37.6%) vs Shinji x Kaworu (62.4%) 242 votes
1-J: Kukuru x Fuuka (29.9%) vs Kumiko x Reina (70.1%) 164 votes
1-K: Hibiki x Miku (72.2%) vs Mafuyu x Ritsuka (27.8%) 288 votes
1-L: Sasaki x Miyano (32.3%) vs Victor x Yuri (67.7%) 436 votes

Wanted to let you know I'm proud of you, Commander Nagisa!
Okay I'm gonna stop joking around with the title and all that, you were a good kid Kaworu. I was proud to be your guardian in that timeline, and I'm proud of who you became, even after I was gone. You did the best you could, and you deserved better than what you got. I hope you don't resent me too much!

Guts: White haired twink detected. Initiate killgriffith.exe
As an aside I can't decide wether or not Rei and Scheirke would get along.
And the world isn't ready for the combined misery and self loathing that would occur by having Shinji and Nina in the same room
Guts is explicitly forbidden to crossover with any manga/anime/Japanese videogame. They are just full of white haired twinks, his poor heart might not make it.
Huh, Rei and Schierke could be interesting! Schierke could be seen as a less extreme Rei: she's more proud of herself and she was able to befriend others more easily. Maybe she could understand Rei better.
Maybe... maybe let's keep Shinji and Nina away from each other.

Pilots' Table
Now we're starting to move through some conversation and the group settling down.
(As a side note, Tokyo-3 was built in/over Hakone. Also, Okinawa is a LONG way from Hakone, so I instantly understand why the Pilots were banned from the School Trip to the Okinawa Beach)
o0o0o0o
EVANGELION! The Pilots' Table pt.1
Some time later, the cluster of adults—because in one way or another they we all adults now, at least in mind—settled on the beach in pairs, watching the sunrise.
Shinji with Asuka pressed into his side, Hikari against Touji, Rei and Kaworu barely inches apart; Misato leaning into Ryoji, and Gendo and Ritsuko side-by-side.
"I have family in Nagoya." Ritsuko spoke up, voice just loud enough for the others to hear her, "We could head there, they'd put us up for a few weeks. Long enough to find apartments or homes for sale we could move into."
"That's awfully far without a car..." Misato chimed in, glancing at her friend with a thoughtful frown, "What about Shizuoka? It's on the way to Nagoya, and it's also closer to us..."
"It's also a slightly smaller town, easier to disappear into." Kaji added his two cents, staring off over the surf.
"You would point that out." Asuka sniped, but there was no heat or venom to her comment. Just simple observation.
It made the four adults paused, before they decided to focus on planning. The Children seemed content to sit and comment, unbothered—mostly—by what was happening around them.
"I would suggest we head for Shizuoka, as Maj- as Katsuragi suggested." Gendo's voice is rough but—for him—soft as he glanced at Ritsuko beside him, "We can call your Grandmother, if you want, once we reach operational landlines."
The blonde glances down at her hands, "I suppose..."
"I'm sure Ryoji or Misato can hotwire a car once we hit the freeway." Asuka speaks up again, and everyone catches her glancing at Touji as he sighs and glances at her, "Or the Stooge can hotwire it if they can't."
"You break into your own car one time..." Touji grouses, shaking his head as he and Asuka grin.
"You know Asuka doesn't let anything go." Shinji chuckles, and both Touji and Asuka laugh as Shinji and Hikari smile.
It—again—makes the adults pause. There is a story, here, that they don't know. Or only know in parts, based on the sad but proud smile Gendo sees on Misato's face as the woman looks at Asuka and Shinji.
"Well-" Ryoji Kaji stands, slapping the sand off his hands on his pants before offering Misato a hand up, "Best we get started marching. Come on, kids"
Four of the six groan, obviously—to Gendo—playing it up as everyone stands, only Rei and Kaworu moving without comment or complaint.
"I get shotgun!" Asuka calls, making Shinji and Touji snort with amusement, while Hikari laughs and both Kaworu and Rei simply smile.

Next scene will be after they've settled into a home on the shore, situated near Okitsunakacho. And yes, I was looking at a map while I referenced locations.
