Katsina youths Killed bandits who attacked their community.

Three Bandits were Killed by youths residing in of Magamar Jibia border community, Katsina State on Sunday. The residents claimed that the gunmen attacked the community around 11 pm, invaded one of the resident's houses, who in turn raised alarm prompting the residents who were mainly youths to mobilize and confronted the bandits. The Youths overwhelmed the bandits who then retreated into the forest where they came for. However, the youths killed three bandits in the process of repelling the attacks A community leader who pleaded for anonymity said, “The youths killed three of the bandits. In fact, they burnt two of the bandits to ashes while the corpse of the third bandit was removed by the police this morning (Monday).” Although authorities are yet to confirm the incident, Another community leader called Gide Dahiru in the area , confirmed the incident to Punch He said, “Yes, the bandits came on Sunday night but the residents confronted them, leading to the death of three of the bandits. NYSC charges corps members on security

Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have been urged to be security conscious in order not to fall victim of unpleasant situations that might endanger their lives. The Director of Human Resource Management Department of the Scheme, Salawu Abdulsalam said this on Sunday in Katsina, while addressing corps members of 2019 Batch C Stream II serving in the state Katsina. Abdulsalam insisted that there is insecurity everywhere hence the need for them to beware of persons and friends they will want to associate. He used the forum to also advise the corps members to always appreciate their parents who had invested heavily in them as well as the divine protection they had enjoyed from God who has sustained them to the present level of their lives. He said “you must avoid unnecessary journeys especially travelling without permission from your coordinators. The Katsina State Police Command has arrested  a cattle rustling, armed robbery and kidnapping suspect. Spokesperson for the command, Isah Gambo, who confirmed the arrest said that on February 1,  based on a tip off, the Command nabbed the suspect, Ibrahim Muwange,  35, of Duffar Mato Malamai village, Danmusa LGA of Katsina state. The suspect has been on the wanted list of the Command in connection with various cases of Cattle rustling, kidnapping, culpable homicide and armed robbery terrorizing Danmusa, Malumfashi, Safana and Batsari LGAs of Katsina state. In the course of investigation one AK 47 rifle No- NH 9634 was recovered in his possession. The suspect, who was arrested in Dayi, Malumfashi LGA, has confessed to his crimes. Read the full article

Bandits release 14 victims held captive for 44 days

Following the release of 30 kidnapped victims as part of the peace deal with Katsina state government, bandits have released another batch of 15 people they kidnapped from Katsina State. The 15 victims who have been in the kidnappers’ den located in Dansadau forest in Zamfara, for 44 days, included 13 women, a one-year-old, and a baby born a day before their release. The state government initiated the peace dialogue with the bandits to end sustained attacks on communities in eight local government areas in the state. A statement signed by the Director-General on Media, Abdu Labaran, said the victims were handed over to Governor Aminu Masari by the Transition Committee Chairman of Jibia Local Government Area, Haruna Musa, on Sunday afternoon in Katsina. “The victims claimed to be ill treated by the bandits who fed them with only little, and half cooked and barely corn gruel, twice a day. “According to the released captives, their captors did not only keep on threatening to kill them for the failure of their relatives to pay ransom demanded by the bandits, but also shot guns in the air consistently with a view to scaring and intimidating them,” he said. Narrating her ordeal, mother of the day-old-baby, Murja, said that they were kept in a camp which initially contained 150 captives, but gradually shrunk to only 13 of them. She said that they never believed they would regain freedom as their abductors were always in a nasty mood, threatening to kill them since their relatives have failed to pay for their release. According to the statement, the governor declared that the 15 victims were the last of those known to be in captivity anywhere. He said that now that all the kidnapped victims from the state had been released, “the next phase of sustaining the peace in Katsina is the surrender of arms and ammunitions by the bandits, and their rehabilitation and integration. “The last phase, the governor added, will involve further provision of amenities like schools, clinics, roads, water points for human and animal consumptions, as well as re-demarcation of cattle routes, encroached by some farmers and converted into farmlands.” The statement added that the government would meet with officials of Zamfara State and their counterparts in the neighbouring state of Maradi in Niger Republic at the weekend to discuss how to sustain the peace process. NEMA distributes relief materials to 2,500 Daura flood victims

As part of the effort to provide temporary relief to the victims of flood in Daura Local Government Area, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) provided relieve materials to 2,200 victims. About 3,500 households had been affected by flood due to a recent heavy downpour which lasted for about 14 consecutive hours. Alhaji Aminu Nadari, Chairman of the local relief distribution committee told journalists in Daura on Tuesday, that all the affected victims had been provided with relief materials which included bags of rice, beans, maize, blankets, mattresses, cooking oil, roofing sheets, ceiling and rubber mats. He added that the level and degree of damaged suffered by an individual victim determined the quantity of relief materials he received. “We are meticulous in the entire process as no one is left out.” Nadari noted that the remaining 800 victims would be covered when the committee receives the remaining two trucks of the relief materials, expected to arrive “any moment from now.” He called on the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the materials and warned that the agency would not condone any act of sabotage. Hajiya Halima Shehu, a beneficiary who lost three rooms to the flood, commended NEMA for the gesture and lauded the committee for being fair and just in the distribution process. NEMA delivered 300 bags of rice, beans, maize, 1,200 bags of cement, 500 bundles of roofing sheets and 100 packets of nails. Other materials were 500 rubber mats, 750 ceiling sheets, 500 each of blankets and mattresses, as well as 100 jerry can of vegetable oil. Read the full article

North-west governors grant amnesty to ‘bandits’, herders

As part of measures to restore peace to the North West zone of the country, cattle rustlers and armed bandits have been granted amnesty by the governors from that part of the country. Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State made the disclosure in a communiqué read at the end of a one-day security and reconciliation meeting with security agents, vigilante, and volunteer groups, herdsmen and farmers on Thursday in Katsina. “As from today, no vigilante group member or volunteers should attack or kill any herdsman, as sacrifice must be made by both sides to ensure peace reign,” he said. “Herdsmen and their families should be allowed to go for their normal businesses, attend markets and worship places without molestation provided they don’t carry arms. “Those bandits who rustled animals from communities should immediately return them to the government or Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association. “Bandits should surrender their weapons and immediately release all those kidnapped and now under their custody. “We are happy that we have seen some releases of kidnapped victims from Zamfara and other states,” he said. The governor also said the states would intensify efforts to provide necessities that would make nomadic life meaningful like hospitals, schools, grazing reserves among others. Gov. Bello Matawalle of Zamfara said the states would provide grazing reserve for herders for them to settle in one place in the zone. Matawalle said: “We are concerned that herders are always roaming around with their animals thereby exposing themselves to different kinds of hazards. “The governors took a uniform measure, you should also take a uniform decision not to rustle animals, kidnap or kill anyone. “You should immediately release all people in your custody in order to show the world that you have truly repented,” he said. The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said that nobody is allowed to attack or kill anybody in the name of vigilante or volunteer group. He also said that anybody caught killing innocent people would be pursued by the police and prosecuted. Adamu said that any herdsman that indulged in kidnapping or other acts would equally be arrested by the police and made to face the full wrath of the law. Read the full article
