Tanker Explosion in Benue State.
Seven persons have been confirmed dead following a tanker explosion in Oshigbudu, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State. The Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Emmanuel Shior confirmed this to Channels Television on Sunday in Makurdi, the state capital. He said about 50 houses were destroyed from the information he got from the local government chairman, adding that a detailed assessment would be carried out tomorrow when he visits the scene of the explosion. Shior conveyed the condolences of the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom who he said, has directed for a comprehensive audit of the fire incident and report back. He also commiserated with those who lost their loved ones and properties to the fire. Earlier, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports and an indigene of the area, Ojotu Ojeme, had confirmed the incident via his Facebook post. He also commiserated with the victims of the explosion, calling on the government at all levels and spirited individuals to help residents of the area. “The fire inferno at Oshugbudu in Agatu local Government, my local government of origin today, 18-04-2021 which has claimed so many lives and destroyed properties yet to be quantified, is the Chief of all the calamities that have fallen us this year,” he said. “As I pray God to comfort the good people of Agatu and most especially those directly involved, over the lost, I wish to call on Government at all levels and spirited individuals to come to our aids in order to drastically reduce the effect of the disaster on the people. Once again may God grant us the fortitude to bear the huge loss.” This comes amid an amateur video sent by an eyewitness which showed many houses, shops, and properties were also destroyed in the inferno. Agatu local government area is some four hours drive from Makurdi, the Benue State capital, and help from this axis is unlikely as the fire is believed to have gone out of control. Many residents of the area called for help from relevant authorities to come to their rescue as the only fire station is in Otukpo Local Government Area, a one hour thirty minutes drive from the scene of the fire. EFCC arrests three over alleged N7m fraud in Benue
The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on Thursday said it had arrested three suspects for alleged conspiracy and obtaining N7.1m by false pretence in Benue. This was contained in a press statement signed by its Zonal Head, Public Affairs Department, Nwanyinma Okeanu in Makurdi. Okeanu in the statement named the suspects as: Adewuyi Adebayo, 31, Osikoya Gboyega, 44, and Akintunde Ogunrinde, 47. She explained that the suspects were arrested at different locations in Lagos on September 9, following a petition received by the commission from a complainant. “The petitioner alleged that on 18th of February, 2018, he noticed his MTN line 08062751577 had stopped working as no calls or messages came to his phone and the phone displayed a message saying, ‘invalid SIM card’. “He went to the MTN office to lodge a complaint but was told to apply for a welcome back SIM that someone else had swapped his SIM card in Abia State. “He immediately contacted his account officer at FCMB bank to inform them of the development and to change his alert phone number to another line only to discover that transactions had occurred on his account without his consent. “The threshold limit for online transfers on his account had also been increased above five hundred thousand Naira and the sum of seven million, one hundred and Seven thousand, five hundred and forty Naira (N7,107,540.00) removed from his account.” The statement said further investigations revealed that a syndicate comprising of Messrs Adebayo, Gboyega, Ogunrinde, and others now at large, were allegedly behind the fraud. She said during interrogation, the suspects claimed that one ‘Alhaji White’ was their leader but could not provide his full name. “Alhaji White is alleged to have met with Akintunde Ogunrinde a.k.a Kekere for a UBA account number. Ogunrinde approached Osikoya Gboyega who then approached Adewuyi Adebayo. “Adebayo supplied the account number used for the business.” She said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded. Benue prosecutes 81, seizes 3,000 cows for violating anti-open grazing law
No fewer than 81 herdsmen had been convicted and 3,000 cows seized under the state’s anti-open grazing law in Benue state. Governor Samuel Ortom said this on Saturday in New York. Ortom, who gave the update in a keynote address at the 2019 annual convention of the Idoma Association USA, said implementation of the law had brought relative peace to the state. “We are implementing our law, and there is relative peace. As at today, we have convicted 81 herdsmen. Some have paid fines; others are still in prison as I talk to you. “We have gone a step further. Anywhere we see cattle doing open grazing, we go after them. So far, we have arrested over 3,000 cattle. “The law stipulates that within seven days, owners of such cattle should pay fines and reclaim them. We have been collecting fines from them,” he said. While insisting that ranching remained the best solution to the farmers/herders conflict, the governor challenged anyone with a better alternative to bring it forward. Ortom spoke on the topic, “Security and Economic Challenges in Benue State”, which was a modification of the theme of the conference that centred on Idoma land. He said all parts of the state were facing similar development challenges, including insecurity, infrastructural deficit, unemployment, health and sanitation issues, among others, hence his decision to broaden the scope. The governor said only four of the 23 local government areas in the state, namely Otukpo, Konshisha, Ushongo and Vandeikya, were spared of conflict between locals and herdsmen in the last six years. “As at today, herdsmen have attacked 19 of the 23 local governments in Benue, claiming over 5,000 lives between 2013 and 2018. “Over 195,000 homes and 30 churches worth billions of Naira were destroyed in the attacks,” Ortom said. He thanked Idoma people in the U.S. for their support to victims of the Agatu attack in 2016; award of scholarships to Benue students, among others. The governor also lauded them for being of good conduct, noting that to the best of his knowledge no criminal case or report had been brought against them. Ortom used the opportunity to brief his hosts on the policies, programmes and projects being executed by the state government under his leadership. Read the full article
