Hot take but… “Gale was a teen soldier who got brainwashed, by a manipulative dictator, into the idea that sacrificing a small number of troops was worth it to definitively stop the government that had spent years ruining the lives of him and his people” and “Gale’s gross disregard for human life directly led to the death of Prim and thousands of other civilians including children, and Katniss is justified in her anger and has no obligation to ever forgive him” are two statements that can and should coexist together.

No one ever mentions how Gale saw it as a competition. Gale was competing with Peeta. Peeta was learning to live with Gale. Cause he can’t live with Katniss without Gale. And to Gale. Up until the the quarter quell he had the upper hand. Everything they had was fake. Katniss didn’t want it. Peeta won’t better her life like he would. He knows her better. On a different level then Peeta. The things they bond with Peeta can’t. Their dads dying, Seam life, making ends meet, the struggle of raising children from a young age, not having choices. That’s something that Peeta doesn’t get. But what he don’t get is Katniss isn’t catnip no more. She has different problems. Different struggles he don’t get. That Peeta does. The nightmares, the horrors, the death of rue. Peeta wasn’t there but he gets it. The struggle to keep yourself moving. A whole other type of survival. And Peeta didn’t think about that stuff. He didn’t compare that stuff when Gale got whipped. When Gale got whipped he stood up cause that was Katniss’s best friend. Shit it could’ve been her lover. But he still did it. Because he never second guess when he was with her. When it came to her. He never put himself first. And that almost led to their destruction.

“As I enter the dining cart, Effie Trinket brushes by with a cup of black coffee. She’s muttering obscenities under her breath. Haymitch, his face puffy and red from the previous day’s indulgence, is chuckling. Peeta holds a roll and looks somewhat embarrassed”

The death of Primrose Everdeen was the worst thing to ever happen to Katniss.
Katniss tried and tried again to protect her all for her to die in the very end. All her best efforts had ended in vain; she had finally lost the one person she wholeheartedly loved. The one person who reminded her of innocence.
It was hard for you to see Katniss bottle up her feelings. It had been a few days since you both had come back to District 12 in the Victor's Village.
Katniss had not opened up one bit but you weren't surprised. You've know Katniss your entire life and you knew she thought that emotion was 'weakness'. She also know you had loses as well; she wanted to be the strong one.
You were both sitting on the couch; you were reading whilst Katniss was staring blank ahead, seemingly in deep thought.
"Katniss."
She didn't look your way. You slowly touched her hand, startling her before she sighed.
"Katniss, how are you... how are you feeling?" You whispered. You'd been holding off this question since you'd gotten home. You didn't want to suffocate her and she needed time. But you were worried.
"Fine, Y/N. Just tired." She said, her voice monotone. You looked unconvinced but she gave you a tired smile. You sighed and nodded.
"Okay, you can take a nap. I'll be right upstairs, okay?"
She nodded as you walked away and she took you up on that offer, falling asleep on the couch.
Not even 5 minutes go by and she hears some clattering in the kitchen. She got up slowly, walking into the kitchen and Prim's cat, Buttercup.
Her heart dropped, her body becoming suddenly tense as she looked at the cat. It meowed.
"She's gone." Katniss said sternly. The cat meowed again, making Katniss become upset. "Get out."
"Get out! She's gone!" Katniss had become overwhelmed with emotion, taking a glass and throwing at the orange cat. "Prim is gone!"
You heard the shouts from downstairs, making you jump and you ran downstairs, your heart beating fast and you feel like you're back in the war again. You saw Katniss throwing the glass and you ran to her.
"Katniss!"
She ignored you, taking another glass and throwing it at the cat. "She's dead! And she's not coming back!" She screamed, her eyes and face red with emotion at this point. You tried your best to hold back a sob as you saw your lover in so much pain.
You grabbed her arm as she screamed, "Get out! Get out!"
The cat, surprisingly, was still in the house, stubborn. She immediately leaned on the counter as she sobbed. You grabbed her shoulder and she turned around, leaning into you as she sobbed harder and harder.
You put a hand on her face, watching as her lips tremble and her eyes puffy with tears. You embraced her tightly, caressing her hair slowly as you shushed her. "I'm here, I'm here, it's okay. I'm here, I'm with you."
Your presence calmed her as she took some deep breathes. "You're safe with me honey, don't worry. I'm here. You don't have to be brave with me, okay?"
She moved her face into your neck, sniffling as she embraced you. You felt her calm more and more as her breathing became more normal. You kissed her head comfortingly. "I love you, Kitty."
She let of your embrace, looking back at the orange act, her lips trembling once more.
She started petting it as it meowed again, leaning into her touch. She then grabbed it, hugging it as she started to cry once more. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
You then turned her around, grabbing her face and wiping her tears with your finger. "You didn't do anything wrong."
She knew that you didn't mean with just with the cat. She knew that you knew that she felt guilty for Prim's death. As she surveyed your face and your eyes, she was suddenly met with an intense feeling of gratefulness.
She was thankful for whatever higher power had sent you to her. She knew that she wouldn't have survived with you. She leaned in, pressing her lips against yours in a tight kiss.
"I love you." She whispered. You smiled as you looked down and pet Buttercup, looking back up at Katniss.
"I love you, too, Kitty."

It's really funny how Gale clearly has more haters than Snow.
It's strange how Snow has sympathizers even. Don't get me wrong, I love him, he's so well written and I thank Suzanne Collins' pen everyday but being a great character doesn't make him a good character...? Tom blyth did an excellent job and I have nothing but love for him. But people act like his Snow and Donald Sutherland's Snow are two different people. I personally don't think Snow had an ounce of goodness in him, or anything to question his fucked morals. That man made deliberate choices. He took the wrong actions on purpose. He chose himself over doing the right thing each time. Sure he was shaken up by Sejanus' death or killing for the first time in the arena (remember though, that made him feel powerful, that says a lot), but that didn't stop him from choosing to do that again. He got worse with time. He was always evil just not accustomed to the consequences I guess? There's not a lot of gray area when it comes to Coriolanus Snow. The sympathizers (there are SO MANY on twitter) often forget that Tigris went through the same things and still chose to be better. Snow was always a terrible person. I can't think of a suitable way to add his inner monologue to the movie but honestly that would have helped immensely because HIS THOUGHTS ARE ALWAYS INSANE and give so much insight into his growth...from a bad person to a far worse person.
Gale on the other hand is a product of war. War has no winners and Gale is the prime example of that. Sure he fought for the "right side", he fought for his people, he fought to save lives but that's didn't protect him from getting innocent blood on his hands. Gale also took the "wrong" actions I guess but unlike Snow, I don't think he had a choice. As Katniss said he's fire, like her. He fought because there was no other option, and he went in with all his heat. He got burned too. He lost a lot, putting aside Katniss, the PTSD and the trauma. He deserves to get shit for killing civilians but there was a lot behind that awful step than just "Gale evil, Gale wanted people (read Prim, most of the fandom would not have cared if it wasn't Prim but that's a topic for another day) dead."
Gale is a far more complex person than Snow (I didn't say character because I'm not talking about writing, ofc the villain is better written than a supporting character ) and he deserves respect for that. I think the early/mid 2010s shipping wars did a lot of damage to his rep. And all this is coming from an everlark shipper so just think about it for a second.
Ignore typos it's 3:31 AM. Thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk. I do not respond well to constructive criticism.

I don’t know if anyone made a post about this before and if they did, I will take it down but I’ve had this concept about the hunger games for a while, about Prim, Peeta and Gale and what they meant to Katniss during the war.
Sweet, beautiful Prim to Katniss was innocence. She was childish convictions and blind optimism and unconditional love. Katniss tried to cling to innocence as long as she could. But war destroys innocence and there was no way for it to survive the war. Prim was doomed from the beginning and how.
Gale, hotheaded and ruthlessly smart was anger. Anger was what made the war, the rebellion, what it was. They wouldn’t have won without anger, but in the end, the anger was also what led to so much destruction and pain.To move on from war, she had to let go of the anger too, there was no other way.
Peeta, finally to Katniss was hope, of new beginnings and dreams, her dandelion in the spring. But hope gets crushed by the war, battered and broken, it’s not what it once was. Hope before war is not the hope that was left after the war. It’s different, but at it’s core it’s still hope and somehow that’s enough, and there was no way to survive without hope.
