Rating: 4/5
Book Blurb:
I locked away my magic and ran from home for a good reason. So why am I ready to undo everything when my demon ex finally tracks me down?
You can’t outrun your demons—McKenna Ellerbeck knows this all too well. She’s been running from literal demons for a decade, one that will stop at nothing to take McKenna’s magic for their own and one that shattered her heart by grasping for dark power. After a horrible run-in with hellhounds on the streets of Paris, McKenna is ready to hide again when she’s confronted by her ex, the Archdemon of Desire Remiel Blake. Remi, the sexiest of gender-shifting demons, calls in an old debt that McKenna owes her, though unlike other deals the terms of fulfillment are simple: all she needs to do is return to her hometown of Arcadia Commons, Massachusetts, for seven days. Disgruntled and disguised at her own insistence, McKenna returns home to the magical community, intent on simply staying in her hotel room watching pay-per-view. But with her high school reunion conveniently happening in the same hotel she’s staying at—the one owned by her ex-boyfriend Bastien Lemaire—and her brother mysteriously picking fights with the town’s most prominent witch family, she finds she can’t stay away for long and decides it’s finally time to face her past and the witches, werewolves, demons, and friends she left behind.
If you miss Supernatural, True Blood, or Buffy, you'll love this sexy and magical contemporary fantasy from a marvelous new voice in fiction, Katie Hallahan!
Review:
When your ex is the demon of lust drags you back to your high school reunion to face everyone you left behind after an incident that ended in the death of your best friend... you do not expect to face off against another demon or to possibly get back together with your hot demon ex. The first book in a series, the story follows McKenna Ellerback, a woman running from her past, from her hot demon ex, and from her own magic. McKenna made a mistake... something that ended in the death of her best friend and now she's been on the run ever since, yet when she has a horrible run in with hellhounds she is saved by the very ex she's been running away from for the past decade, the Archdemon of Desire, Remiel "Remi" blake. Remi is as tempting as she is cunning... and McKenna owes her and she is here to collect..., in the form of McKenna returning back to her hometown of Arcadia Commons for seven days to attend their high school reunion. McKenna doesn't want any part of that, she doesn't want to face her other ex or any of the friends she's abandoned.... yet strane things are happening that has her drawn back into facing her past and her friends.... and maybe her own feelings for Remi. This was definitely a fun paranormal read filled with drama, friendship troubles, relationship healing, demons, and more! It's a fun first book in the series and I am so curious where the second book goes and how McKenna and Remi's relationship will be in the second book! McKenna and Remi are definitely interesting characters and their relationship was really fun to read, from high school lovers to exes... and to something more. Remi is a really fun love interest and I was so rooting for her the entire time. I definitely think you should pick up this book if you are looking for a fun sapphic paranormal romance with drama and mystery!

Más allá de Bond: Pierce Brosnan
Tumblr media
A continuación veremos algunas:
Director: Roger Donaldson.

        Creepily entertaining world premiere
        Writers Theatre presents      Witch
Review by Lauren Emily Whalen
Right now, we could all use some big witch energy.
Fortunately, there’s no better place to find it than Writers Theatre’s terrific production of Witch. Just in time for Halloween – and Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation – playwright Jen Silverman (The Roommate) imagines the devil in the form of a handsome young man, trying to work his dark magic on the small town of Edmonton. Where most period pieces get bogged down in elaborate costumes and language, Silverman takes a contemporary approach to an old tale, and it works. Mostly. Her theme of “burn it all down and change it”
certainly rings true, especially these past few weeks, but aren’t extended throughout the whole play. Despite this significant hiccup, Witch is well worth the trip to Glencoe.
When everyone thinks you’re a witch, why not go ahead and sell your soul? That’s the question Elizabeth (Steppenwolf ensemble member Audrey Francis) ponders throughout the play. Scratch (Ryan Hallahan) is making her an offer he thinks she can’t refuse. Except she does refuse, repeatedly, though he finds himself drawn to her and their strange, magnetic chemistry. Meanwhile, kitchen maid Winnifred (Arti Ishak) grits her teeth fetching food and newspapers for blowhard Sir Arthur (David Alan Anderson) while pining for her secret lover, the charismatic Frank Thorny (Jon Hudson Odom). Frank grew up poor and aims to become Sir Arthur’s adopted heir, but not if Sir Arthur’s biological son Cuddy (Steve Haggard) has anything to do with it. And of course, Scratch finds himself involved in this as well. After all, he is a salesman.
What’s distinctive about Witch is its language. Although the play is a period piece, inspired by Rowley, Dekker & Ford’s The Witch of Edmonton, Silverman’s dialogue is rooted firmly in the here and now. Characters use “like,” “fuck” and “BFD” with abandon, often talking in the singsong drawl typical of the modern age. Only Elizabeth’s words are more measured and deliberate – as the town outcast, living alone in her hut and fending off rumors, one misplaced syllable could have dire consequences. Though Silverman’s style takes a bit of getting used to, especially since the characters are clad in brocade, breeches and long skirts, Witch’s words have a rough beauty, initially throwing the audience for a loop, and then rooting them firmly in the here and now, using the sentence structure they know well.
What’s missing in Witch is its failure to carry through a theme. During compelling monologues at the play’s beginning and end, characters muse the wisdom of destroying everything and creating a society from the ruins, of the general lack of hope. Certainly, contemporary audiences can deeply relate to these tenets. However, they’re not as prevalent in the middle of the show, as Elizabeth and Scratch’s banter becomes something deeper, and Frank taunts Cuddy while making false promises to Winnifred. Perhaps Silverman didn’t want to beat her viewers over the head with metaphor, but by scaling back during the meat of the story, the message is lost.
Director Marti Lyons is a natural fit for Silverman’s quick wit and dark humor, coaxing such inspired performances out of the cast and staging so beautifully, the playwright’s flaws are almost overwhelmed. Standouts include Francis’s Elizabeth, intelligent and always slightly skeptical of what she is told; Frank’s endlessly smooth Odom; and Ishak’s pissed-off chambermaid, ready and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. Overall, Witch is a lot of moving parts comprising a beautiful whole, and a sad reminder that despite numerous advances, existential despair remains the same.
   Rating: ★★★
Witch continues through December 16th at Writers Theatre, 325 Tudor, Glencoe (map), with performances Tuesdays-Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays 3pm & 7:30pm, select Sundays 2pm and/or 6pm.  Tickets are $35-$80, and are available by phone (847-242-6000) or online through their website (check for availability of half-price tickets). Yankeemetrics: It is high, it is far, it is … see ya 2018
RAB Live Chat
I want to thank everyone for being such great followers, fans and readers during this unforgettable record-breaking season. Hope you enjoyed all the smart stats, #FunFacts, Obscure Yankeemetrics and other interesting numbers. Let’s Go Yankees.
(Getty)
It’s Just Not Happ-ening In the first-ever Division Series matchup between 100-win teams, the 108-win Red Sox took the series opener, 5-4.
It was another frustrating and winnable game for the Yankees, who struck out 13 times and left 10 men on base in the one-run loss. This was the ninth time in franchise history the Yankees lost a nine-inning postseason game by a run while stranding at least 10 baserunners — and the first time ever they also struck out more than 10 times in the game.
J.A. Happ, who had been so brilliant against Boston this season (1.99 ERA in four starts) and during his entire career (2.98 ERA in 21 games), was pounded early and pulled in the third inning without recording an out, getting charged with five runs on four hits. He is the first Yankee starter in the postseason to allow at least five runs and while pitching no more than two innings since A.J. Burnett in Game 5 of the 2009 World Series against the Phillies. Before Happ, no other pitcher in franchise history had done that in the opening game of a playoff series.
The Yankee chipped away at their early 5-0 deficit but their rally fell just short as Aaron Judge’s solo homer to lead off the ninth inning was followed by three straight strikeouts to end the game. The home run was a significant one for Judge, his sixth in 15 career postseason games. The only Yankee to hit more dingers in their first 15 playoff games was Bernie Williams (7).
Giancarlo Stanton was part of the strikeout parade in the ninth inning, and finished with four whiffs in the game. A Stantonian #NotFunFact to chew on: He is the only cleanup hitter in franchise history to strike out four or more times in a postseason game.
(AP)
The Kracken Erupts The Yankees rebounded from Game 1’s bitter loss with a fired-up, fist-pumping win on Saturday night to even the series at 1-1.
They probably couldn’t have been in a better situational spot to steal a game at Fenway, facing David Price, a perennial Yankees punching bag with a historically terrible postseason resume. And both those narratives played out perfectly for the Yankees. Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez both crushed home runs while Andrew McCutchen chipped in with a booming RBI single, before Price got the hook and was booed off the mound in the second inning. The final damage for Mr. Price: 1 2/3 innings, 3 runs, 3 hits, 2 homers, 2 walks, 0 strikeouts.
David Price vs Yankees This Season:
17.1 IP 23 Runs 24 Hits 11 HR 11 BB
— Katie Sharp (@ktsharp) October 7, 2018
Price has now made 10 starts in the postseason and his team has lost all 10 of them. That is the longest postseason streak of team games lost in a player’s starts in MLB history.
Okay, back to the Bombers. Judge’s first-inning solo homer was his third in three games this postseason. He is the second Yankee to go deep in each of the team’s first three games to start a postseason, along with Hank Bauer in the 1958 World Series. And he also joined Bernie Williams (2001, 1996), Reggie Jackson (1977) and Bauer as the only Yankee outfielders to homer in three postseason games in a row.
(New York Times)
Sanchez’s dinger off Price was probably the least shocking part of Saturday’s game. His brief history against the lefty speaks for itself:
18 plate appearances
7 hits
6 home runs
4 walks
But Price wasn’t the only Red Sox pitcher that got schooled by Sanchez on Saturday. He pulverized an Eduardo Rodriguez fastball literally out of the ballpark. With a projected distance of 479 feet, it is the longest hit at Fenway since Statcast tracking began in 2015 and the second-longest hit in the postseason at any park over the last four years.
With his two homers, he entered into some purdy good company. He and Yogi Berra (1956 World Series Game 7) are the only Yankee catchers with a multi-homer game in the playoffs. And, at the age of 25 years and 308 days, he is the youngest catcher to homer twice in a game in MLB postseason history.
Masahiro Tanaka bounced back from a couple bad starts to the end the season with another postseason gem, giving up one run — via the #obligatoryhomer — in five innings. He now owns a 1.50 playoff ERA, the fifth-lowest by any pitcher with at least five playoff starts.
Lowest Postseason ERA (min. 5 Starts) ERA Games Sandy Koufax 0.95 8 Christy Mathewson 0.97 11 Eddie Plank 1.32 7 Bill Hallahan 1.36 7 Masahiro Tanaka 1.50 5
Nightmare on River Avenue There really are no words that can capture the utter humiliation, indescribable embarrassment and overwhelming atrocity that was Game 3 in the Bronx on Monday night. Mike did an excellent job summing up the terrible managerial mistakes from the 16-1 loss, I’ll just present here the cold hard ugly facts.
15-run loss is the largest margin of defeat in postseason game in franchise history
It is also the most lopsided loss for any team in a postseason game at home
16 runs allowed are the most ever by a Yankee team in a postseason game
16 runs allowed are the most ever in postseason game for any team that gave up no more than one homer
Austin Romine is first catcher in MLB history to pitch in a postseason game; the only other position player to do it was Blue Jays infielder Cliff Pennington in the 2015 ALCS Game 5 against the Royals
Summing up the pitching mess … Yankees are first team in Major-League history to give up at least 16 runs, 18 hits and eight walks in a postseason game
And mercifully, we close this section with our #NotFunFact of the series, awarded to Luis Severino:
Luis Severino: 1st pitcher in Yankees history to allow 6+ Runs and 7+ Hits in an outing of 3 IP or fewer in postseason game at Yankee Stadium.
— Katie Sharp (@ktsharp) October 9, 2018
End of the Chase For 28 It’s a game of inches, and the Yankees were just a few short in Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss. Folks, I hope you’re sitting down for this series-ending Obscure Yankeemetric … It was the 14th time the Yankees have been eliminated from the postseason at home, but the first time it happened in a one-run game at the Stadium with the winning run on base when the game ended. Welp.
(Newsday)
For the second straight night, Yankees found themselves in early hole, after CC Sabathia allowed three runs in the first three innings, a rare mediocre outing for him given his postseason track record in the Bronx. This was his eighth playoff start at home as a Yankee, and the first one that he gave up more than two runs. His 1.61 ERA in his previous seven home postseason starts was the second-best by any Yankee (min. 4 starts).
Zach Britton coughed up the fourth run via a 338-foot homer by Christian Vazquez that barely cleared the short porch in right field. It was the first homer Britton has allowed to a No. 9 batter in his career. And, according to ESPN’s home run tracking system, it would not have been a home run at any of the other 29 ballparks. A true ‘Yankee Stadium Special’, served up at the worst possible moment:
Shortest HR at Yankee Stadium This Season:
326 ft (Yoenis Cespedes, Jul 20) 338 (Christian Vazquez, Oct 9) 338 (Juan Soto, Jun 13)
— Katie Sharp (@ktsharp) October 10, 2018
In a season where #toomanyhomers was a nightly trend on Yankees twitter, the team failed to go deep in the fateful final two games. The only other time this season the Bombers were homerless in back-to-back games in the Bronx was April 7 and 8 against the Orioles, the fifth and sixth home games of the season. That’s baseball, Suzyn.

Last week we got to meet Cesar and Richard’s story, the two who founded the team from early 2004 and on; now we get to discover another two faces from the team that are worth knowing as well: Katie Hallahan, whose name you’ve probably seen around because besides being a game developer she is also our PR Director, and Weldon Hathaway, who once was one of the most helpful community members who eventually became an important technical lead as Programming Director, and the guy we always run to when something breaks.
Let’s get started, ladies first! Katie has been around since 2003 or so. Way back then she was working directly with everything script and writing related - she was Cesar’s right hand - but after my departure from the team back in 2008, PR became somewhat of a shared duty in the team and that gave room for Katie eventually grow into the role positioning herself as a Phoenix Director as well as Chief Communication Officer of the team. Katie became a vital part of what the team is, because believe it or not, she not only works directly with game development and PR duties, but also nowadays she assists directly with Marketing efforts into distribution and partnerships as well as production coordination and even HR as needed. She is quite a force to be reckoned with. While sometimes it may feel like everything is overwhelming, - work gets insane sometimes for a department lead - I do admit that one of the things I admire the most about her is her devotion to learn and to move forward, to help however it may be possible. There is no “can’t” from her, just a “let’s do this”.
Way back then we didn’t work that closely - I was PR and she was development - but working closely now I realize that at some points we probably did not click at all, maybe even disliked each other! After all, we all come from the same place but we are both quite different people; but the fact is, it is impossible to be against someone who works with the same values and the same passion as you do towards something as beautiful as everything that Phoenix has achieved. It is just impossible to deny and not to respect all that hard work; in fact, now that I have had the time to be around her more I can honestly say she has taught me a thing or two about dedication and commitment. She is truly amazing, and we are all quite lucky to have her with us.
Having introduced her properly, let’s hear her story from her own words:
In late 2002, I was an unemployed college grad with an English degree, living at home and working crappy temp jobs. When looking for any new King's Quest games one night, I came upon the old KQ9 website, thought this was an amazing and awesome idea, and saw they were looking for staff writers too! I immediately applied, writing a Four Winds article about the Isle of the Scared Mountain as part of application, and soon after, I was on the team!
I went from staff writer to co-designer on the game fairly quickly - I know that within a few months, I was deep into writing and designing the chapters that focused on Rosella, who is my favorite character from the original KQ series. Now days I still work in design, but I also playtest frequently. I also directed Cognition Episode 2, and I'm also the PR Director, which involves tasks from planning release schedules to drafting press releases to emailing and interacting with the press and interacting a lot with the community. Every day is different!
One of the best memories with Phoenix will always be back in 2004, the voiceover auditions in NYC and the first time a number of us met in person. It was kind of nerve-wracking traveling to NY that weekend, but once we all got in the same room, it really just clicked! It was so much fun and I'll always remember the auditions, and staying up late watching them and casting roles and making up songs and watching Buffy and wandering around NYC with Cesar the following weekend when I came back for more fun.
My favorite Phoenix character would be Erica Reed. I love Erica, she's tough, vulnerable, smart, badass and a redhead. What's not to love!
Weldon has been part of the team ever since TSL days, around 2010 or so, he was the most helpful poster around, always assisting everyone with anything people would bring up and I personally believe his story to be one of the sweetest and remarkable in the team, because he not only just helped everyone around him, eventually he joined the team and he basically pushed himself further into programming and quickly becoming a lead in the team, and nowadays is one of the most valuable team members we have. I think if both Weldon and Aaron go offline for a whole day, Media freaks out. We break everything, and they are always there to help - no questions asked.
I must say his patience is infinite; personally, I have got no idea how many times I keep pestering him in one day alone, and he’s just always helpful - he’s simply brilliant from the point of view that he knows what he’s doing and he’s most certainly that one person that you can rely on for important things to get done. Sometimes a bit grumpy, but that’s some sort of a downside for most intelligent people - they have got low tolerance for little things sometimes and they just go straight to the point and just get things done.
Also, it must be said that Weldon is one of the most fascinating people I have ever worked with. He has got so many unique things happening to him - one of the most remarkable had something to do with a chicken invading his house one day. That shall be a story that will always be in our memory.
Now, let’s hear Weldon’s story told by the man himself:
I followed TSL for years and was always very excited about the work on that game. I have some background in computer technical support, so when the first episode of the game finally released I was just sort of lurking in the tech forums on the site and helping people out with any issues they were having running the game. After a week or so of doing that, Cez contacted me and asked if we could have a chat over Skype. I honestly thought he was going to ask me to stop messing around in the forums like I owned the place or something like that, but instead he asked me if I wanted to more “officially” take on that role of watching the support areas there. I also started beta testing Episode 2 of TSL, and after doing  that for a while he asked me to lead up that department as well. I started teaching myself some programming and figuring out how to fix things in the game. Things just continued to grow from there, with Cez giving me more and more things to do, and me always scrambling to learn what I needed to figure out to accomplish those tasks, until I found myself working as one of the studio directors.
At the time I first started helping out with TSL I was working as a high school math teacher. I gradually shifted from teaching into working for the studio full time, and now my time is split between working on the new Gabriel Knight game and post-release Moebius issues, and a small accounting business I run.
The absolute best was going down to GDC to show Cognition and getting to meet a bunch of other people from the studio in person. We all work remotely, so getting more than a couple of people together is pretty rare. It was very cool to hang out with a bunch of  wonderful folks that I normally only hear on the phone.
My favorite character is Terence from the Cognition games. It seems like he always has some weird and goofy thing to say, no matter what’s going on.
It’s kind of lovely being able to revise the background of people I work with and being able to get a few words across, because sometimes we get so caught up into the every day routine I don’t think I’ve ever been able to let Katie or Weldon know how much I appreciate them, which I’m sure is a general feeling in all the team. Sometimes when you realize how much one person does, and they take a day off for medical reasons or personal stuff, you do understand the impact of their everyday routine. Having said that, every single member is more valuable than we might imagine when we stop to recognize how important they are in the big picture.
There are updates yet to go - next week we will have Aaron Light’s story and the team doodle dork, this noob called Say or something. Aaron and I have been community frands even before I was PR Director and before he was Programming Lead, he is like this adorable - and a little bit crazy - little brother or something; so, I guess it should be interesting to say the least. Thank you for reading and following through with all our anniversary updates. I have read even the feedback on the doodle updates and you are all far too kind.
