When I first watched Dark, I was really frustrated with how Martha talked to Katharina right after Mikkel disappeared, and also with how she rejected her mother when Katharina finally tried to talk to them when she found out about the time travel. And while I still think that she was wrong to scream at her mother in those first days after Mikkel's disappearance, now I actually do think Martha was right the second time. From what Martha said, Katharina has barely talked to them in months. This isn't just Katharina being busy looking for Mikkel and Ulrich, it's her refusing to interact or give any comfort to her other two children. I think Martha has a right to be frustrated. Not only that, but Katharina choses to leave Martha and Magnus behind to look for Mikkel in the past, without even trying to reach out to her other two children first to tell them what she was doing. Hell, Martha was murdered, Magnus got lost in time, and Katharina doesn't even know. She never even seems to give a second thought to them in the time she spends in 1987. When Katharina goes to talk to Ulrich in the asylum, she promises him that "they'll bring Mikkel back" with determination in her voice. But if she had tried to return to the passage at least once during this time she spent in 1987, she should have known that the passage was closed. If she doesn't know that the passage was closed, that means that Katharina never even tried to return once. She just left her two other children behind for months without ever trying to get back to them and make sure they're ok. Even if the apocalypse didn't happen, even if Martha never got killed, that would still mean that she left them by themselves after they just lost their father and brother, and now their mother would have disappeared as well. So yeah, I think Martha had all the right to be frustrated that her mother was neglecting her. This isn't to say that I think Katharina is evil or anything, but I do think she was blinded by her desperation to get Mikkel and Ulrich back, and because of that, she did fail Martha and Magnus.
#dark netflix#martha nielsen#katharina nielsen#magnus nielsen#my meta#my post.#and even magnus seems to agree with martha after those months#the first time martha screamed at katharina in season 1 he went and comforted his mother#but in season 2 he goes with martha and doesn't talk to katharina either#i've been thinking about this because i see quite a few dark reactions where people get frustrated at martha#and i get why they get frustrated at her#but after rewatching dark so many times i'm getting defensive of martha and more critical of katharina

MARek TannHAus = MARTHA nielsen
SONJA tannhaus = JONAS kahnwald
There is this interpretation that i really like that says that Jonas and Martha are like a reflection of Marek and Sonja. Jonas and Martha only exist because of Marek and Sonja. Even their names create them, Martha can be formed with Marek's full name and Jonas is basically an anagram of Sonja.
I like to think of it as the origin world splitting what was already there and mixing in the pain and vision of the creator (H.G. Tannhaus) to create this anomaly. It's like an exaggeration. It made two worlds that depend on each other to ever happen and erase itself in just a moment of time.
Nielsen Siblings and Marek Tannhaus
The three Nielsen siblings start with an M because of Ulrich's brother (Mads). However, I think that each of them can represent a way in which H.G. Tannhaus saw his son.
Magnus: Something I always noticed about Magnus in season 1 is how protective he is of his mother. He is constantly trying to help her with everything that is going on and trying to be on her side. We get to see that side of Magnus again in Season 3 when we see a different version of the characters at the beginning of the chaos for them. When Ulrich comes to visit, he doesn't want him there the moment Katharina gets home. He also thought Martha was talking nonsense about the end of the world, and he just didn't wanted her bothering their mother with it. When we meet Marek, one of the things he says to his father is, "No wonder Mom couldn't stand it here." Marek is someone who understands his mother's point of view and seems to be on her side most of the time. Just like Magnus.
Martha: I think Martha represents the most misunderstood side. Something we see about Martha is that she stands up for herself when she thinks her parents are being unfair. She usually does this when her parents are too focused on their things and don't pay attention to her wants and needs as their child. In one way or another, it can be seen in both worlds as her father abandoning the family. We also see her more than once having problems with Katharina because she feels ignored by her. It is the same with Marek when he says that his father never saw him. Still, we see that their parents really want to try to connect with them, even if they don't know how. I think the best way to describe it is something Katharina said to Martha in 3x06: "I'm sure i'm the last person you want to talk to, but If you do I'm here. Your dad and I… A lot of things might be different now. But that's not necessarily all bad."
Mikkel: He is the little boy. That's how his parents would always remember him, and they would do anything for him. No matter how much time passes, they would still try to save him even if they can't save themselves. It doesn't matter if they lose their freedom or their lives. Even damning the whole world is an option. Ulrich tried to kill someone and got locked up because he thought he could find his son. Katharina fought until her last breath to reunite her family, while in other world she died holding Mikkel during the apocalypse. Tannhaus split the world in two because he couldn't let go the pain of losing Marek, Sonja and Charlotte. He couldn't accept a world without his family. Like Ulrich and Katharina, Tannhaus also did everything he could to bring his little boy back.

I’m watching Dark again and aaah I have so many feelings
Especially the story with Katharina and Ulrich just breaks my heart... Katharina was beaten and abused by her mother and managed to break the cicle of violence and became a good mom to her kids and you’d think she at least give Ulrich a slap, when she found out, he’d been cheating but no, she is such a fucking trooper, I love her. She’s even willing to save him, when she found out, he’d been locked up for decades in an asylum in the past and to die by her own mother’s hands while doing so.. aagh I cry everytime :(
Ulrich is far from a perfect human being, I mean he cheats on his wife and out of sheer desperation tries to kill little baby Helge but fucking hell, he did absolutely not deserve to spend the rest of his life locked up in an asylum, only being able to catch small glimpses of his children and never knowing, what happened to Katharina
Dark is so fucking good; especially for a german show (trust me, most of german tv fucking sucks). I’m gonna finish watching it today and I think, I’ll start again right away. After all, the end is the beginning and the beginning is the end 🥲 ♾️
