Contextual Statement

Pollution and the Anthropocene

Pollution as a whole is considered one of the largest growing issues amongst this current Anthropocene. Specifically physical forms of pollution are considered more widely understood. Noise pollution is generally overlooked as a form of harmful waste because it is so elusive, however, this noise produced in large infrastructures and urban communities have a vast amount of health and environmental problems. In noise pollution, A Modern Plague Goines and Hagler claim that “Environmental noise pollution, a form of air pollution, is a threat to health and wellbeing.” Considering this they also state that “The body reacts to noise with a fight or flight response, with resultant nervous, hormonal, and vascular changes that have far-reaching consequences.” (2007) In a busy city like Auckland, human progress and development have been a direct cause of noise pollution. Noise pollution has been said to “cause deafness, nervous breakdowns, mental disorders, heart troubles, high blood pressure, headaches, dizziness, inefficiency and insomnia” (Singh & Daver 2004).

From this information and other scholarship articles, it became clear that noise pollution is a harmful result of urban development. With the common opinion that “environmental noise to which we are subjected serves no useful purpose and is, therefore, undesirable”(Goines, Hagler 2007). Socially we are all affected by noise, whether it be with communication, concentration or the myriad of health problems we have a relatable irritable attitude towards disrupting noise. We considered this a challenge to take this noise pollution and turn it into something new and desirable. Turning this negative product of human advancement and creating something positive from it.

Art/Technology

Techniques for collecting environmental recordings with the intention of creating art have been around since technology has allowed it. The musical genre of Musique Concrete coined through the 1940’s takes recordings of often harsh and undesirable noise, composing them in ways which challenge conventions of music. Where conventional music would be composed in the initial/planning stages of a piece, the compositions found within Musique Concrete are dictated by the characteristics of the audio which is used.

Noise in cooperation with visuals has been prominently joined in past and recent years. Works by Carsten Nicolai greatly represent visuals and audio being brought together, such as Empty Garden (1999) where Nicolai created  “a sound piece that tries to connect two spatially separated locations.” His other project Frozen Water (2000) offered the concept of sound as a movement, representing the visual result of sound vibrations using glass flasks and distilled water along with a modular system and mixing board. Additionally, Shatten Loop (2012) displayed movement using “a magnetic tape loop” from the cassette tape, using something traditionally for recording sound and breaking it apart to its raw movement element to represent this idea of “self-organisation”.

Large installation based projects such as Visions of America: Amériques display how a site-specific architectural video installation can highlight and enhance a composition of music. Specifically in Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. Visuals made for the composition was used to enhance the experience of music to the public, creating an all-immersive and visual and audio experience for the public (Visions of America 2014). Involving the public can create influence in an art project and this idea continues to be done in various ways. Todd Machover’s Symphony in D (2015) invites citizens of Detroit to contribute personal audio from around the city. Much like SILO, this audio is the composed and mixed into a form which is now presentable in music and art context. Without labelling it, this is effectively recycling noise within the city of Detroit.

Using technology to represent the sound in a visual way has shown to broaden the experience and expertise. The broken sound created by Gary James Joynes was another example of how noise could be represented, using several years worth of dead speaker coils from his past experimentations, he uses loud volumes to create vibrations that generate patterns in the particles of the coils. Essentially recycling electronic waste and using sound to create a visual with the coils  (Joynes 2015). Programs created such as Centiscript a “JavaScript-based creative code environment for creating experimental graphics.” have displayed the future potential of creating texture and movement visuals in a coding program, possibly with the incorporation of sound it could be a new way to display music or sound  (Horii 2016).

From past sound and visual installations as well as health and environmental context, this has informed and influenced the growth and development of our project. Considering that noise pollution comes from large cities and urban environments, having a city visual seems the obvious and most simple way to represent our idea. Inspired by movies such as It’s kind of a funny story (Boden, Fleck 2010) and Inception (Nolan 2010) an elusive disconnected city with movement acts as our main visual. Using the noise pollution we collected and processed to influence the ‘wiggle’ movement of the buildings and the details (lamps, trees, cranes) allowed us to convey how noise is all surrounding and affecting every element in an urban infrastructure. Allowing buildings to be disconnected from roads adds to the idea that noise is elusive, intangible and chaotic because of the building failing to be grounded at all. Using harsh noises collected and categorized into Ambient, Organic and Mechanical was a way to represent the recycling system of waste (i.e plastics, glass, cardboard). Using animation to connect the illustrations and sound together gave us a visual and audio experience you will see in front of you.
