Sleek summer-spook outfit, pairing a kasuri (an ikat technique) kimono, with a cute obi with tiny dokuro (skull).
With the coming of Obon celebrations, summer months are seen as the spooky seasons in Japan, hence why motifs like nozarashi (weather-beaten bones) are not unusual on summer fashion items.
I like the matching marukuge (obijime made from fabric tubes filled with cotton). In the past, those were mostly used for formal attires yet recently, you see them more and more paired with informal kimono.

On the wall, farm garments exemplify a rare combination of sashiko quilting and kasuri dyeing, and probably date from the Meiji era. The sea chests flanking the bed are typical of those from Sakata in northern Yamagata Prefecture.

First Ikat weaving! It's kasuri.
I don't have a photo of the whole thing ironed sorry lol, I hemmed them and turned them into square cloths. I measured and dyed thread so it would make a pattern when I wove it. The dyeing took so long but undoing all the knots I made dyeing it took the same amount of time it took to weave it I'm p sure. My prof lent me Japanese Ikat Weaving by Jun and Noriko Tomita and it was super helpful. I loved looking at pictures of vintage and modern kasuri they were so beautiful.

Tumblr media
Kasuri methi, or dried fenugreek leaves, is a quintessential ingredient in Indian cooking. Known for its distinctive aroma and slightly bitter taste, this herb adds a unique depth of flavor to a wide range of dishes. Let’s explore the many uses of kasuri methi in Indian cuisine and why it’s a must-have in every kitchen.
What is Kasuri Methi?
Kasuri methi is made by drying the fresh leaves of the fenugreek plant. The drying process intensifies its flavor, giving it a robust, earthy aroma with a hint of bitterness. Originating from the Kasur region of Pakistan (hence the name), this herb has become a staple in Indian households and is widely used in North Indian, Punjabi, and Mughlai cuisines.
Culinary Uses of Kasuri Methi
Kasuri methi is incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways to enhance the flavor of dishes. Here are some popular uses of kasuri methi in Indian cooking:
Curries and Gravies: One of the most common uses of kasuri methi is in curries and gravies. It is often added towards the end of cooking to preserve its aroma and flavor. Dishes like butter chicken, paneer makhani, and dal makhani owe their rich, complex flavors to this magical herb.
Parathas and Rotis: Crushed kasuri methi is a popular addition to paratha dough, giving the flatbreads a unique flavor and aroma. Methi paratha, made with fresh or dried fenugreek leaves, is a breakfast favorite in many Indian households.
Snacks and Starters: Kasuri methi is often used to flavor snacks like pakoras, samosas, and kebabs. Its earthy taste pairs well with spices and adds a delightful twist to these dishes.
Rice Dishes: Adding a pinch of kasuri methi to rice dishes like pulao or biryani can elevate their flavor. It complements the spices and adds a subtle bitterness that balances the richness of the dish.
Marinades and Spice Blends: Kasuri methi is a key ingredient in many marinades and spice blends. It pairs well with yogurt-based marinades for meats and adds depth to spice mixes like garam masala.
Tadka (Tempering): Crushed kasuri methi can be added to the tempering (tadka) of dals and curries. Heating it in oil or ghee releases its essential oils, infusing the dish with its signature aroma.

How can India and Pakistan 'win without fighting'?
An India-Pakistan discussion with Khurshid Kasuri, Mani Shankar Aiyar and others, and a TCF Pakistan Boston fundraiser later where the keynote speaker was Indian - and full of praise for the Pakistani education NGO... Can our leaders please learn?
The keynote speaker at TCF Boston fundraiser this year was Indian – and it wasn’t ‘bad news’. On the contrary. Check out Shashi Buluswar‘s cricket documentary that I’ve included in the article. Plus a discussion with ‘peacemongers’ hosted by a center in Kolkata the same day. Why can’t our political leaders take a leaf from Mani Shankar Aiyar’s relationship with his old friend Javed Jabbar, a…
