Supreme Court to hear a batch of petitions in Manipur Violence case today (May 8, 2023)

The batch of petitions on the Manipur situation will be heard by the Supreme Court bench including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha, and Justice JB Pardiwala today (May 8, 2023). Dinganglung Gangmei, the Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee of the Manipur Legislative approached the Supreme Court against the order of the High Court of Manipur in context with the Schedule Tribe status for the Meitei Community as a tribe of Manipur. The petition filed argued that such an order resulted in violence within the state resulting in the death of 19 people.

The matter was heard by a two-judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi. The bench said that “It is the duty of the court to examine the petition irrespective of any written statement or denial and reject the petition if it does not disclose a cause of action.”

It is quite common to read and listen to hagiographies when a prominent leader passes away. Given Karunanidhi’s stature as a leader who has been in public life for more than 60 years, it is fitting that there has been an outpouring of comment since his demise. 

Referred to as Kalaignar (artiste), he was a multifaceted personality who had a strong political acumen and possessed an incomparable rhetorical and oratory flourish that was autodidactic. Karunanidhi was a highly skilled administrator and a fierce political competitor who stood his ground even after suffering numerous setbacks and succeeded in making several comebacks.

All the above is unmistakably true and there is a ready consensus on his political acumen and standing. However, what is somewhat questionable is the glorification of him as an uncompromising champion of social justice. There is no denial that, as a legatee of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, he was committed towards social justice but to address him as a lieutenant of the icon of equality B. R. Ambedkar is quite unwarranted. Chennai remains tense as court to decide place for Karunanidhi's burial

Almost 12 hours after the demise of M Karunanidhi -- five-time Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President, the situation in Chennai remains tense, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, several other ministers and very important persons expected to visit the city to pay tribute to the late veteran politician.

There has been violence at some places after the state government denied a place for his burial at the Marina Beach, Chennai, where several leaders, including former Chief Ministers Annadurai, M G Ramachandran, and J Jayalalithaa, were buried.

The workers raised slogans seeking a place at the Marina for their beloved leader as his final resting place. Some of these workers turned violent. The DMK leadership immediately approached the Madras High Court which adjourned the hearing to 8:30 am on Wednesday.

During the night, Karunanidhi's mortal remains were moved from his Gopalapuram house to the one in CIT Nagar, where his two wives reside. The body was then moved to Rajaji Hall, a public hall in the city, Wednesday early morning to allow the public to pay homage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others are expected to visit the Hall on Wednesday after which the body will be taken for burial.

An eerie calm wrapped the city after Karunanidhi's death was announced on Tuesday night. Even on Wednesday morning, most of the shops remained closed in the city, while roads went empty, except for those who went to pay homage to the late DMK leader.
