What is China New Virus?
China is again struck with a new, alarming virus that attacks the lungs and respiratory tract in children. The outbreak in the country has been going on since May, and now, the country's medical service faces thousands of patients daily.
The severe respiratory disease attacks respiratory organs, causing secondary symptoms associated with pneumonia. In addition to this, body pain and breathing difficulty are reported in children. Schools have been shut down, and people are requested to follow the WHO Guidelines.
In this blog post, we will discuss what is the China New Virus and how you can take preventive precautions.
What is China New Virus?
China is currently facing a new virus causing respiratory abnormalities, including Pneumonia. However, you can rest assured that researchers have not reported any new pathogens related to the illness. Unlike COVID-19, which was caused by the coronavirus, the new respiratory infection results from pathogens such as influenza virus, adenoviruses, and RSV.
Chinese healthcare professionals expected the outbreak long ago. This was mainly an estimation of the country’s first winter season without COVID restrictions. However, epidemiologists believe that the prevalence of pneumonia in China is highly unusual.
What Does Chinese Health Care Say?
The National Health Commission of China reported the first “Pneumonia Outbreak” case on November 13, 2023. Since then, there has been a sudden hike in children's hospitalization cases. This week, the situation became even more intense and gained the attention of the World Health Organization. Concerning the large number of abnormal pneumonia cases in China, the organisation asked for current reports. A Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) statement on undiagnosed pneumonia cases in children is requested from the China Health Department.
According to the latest reports, the virus originated in northern China and then spread Nationwide. Most of the severe pneumonia cases are recorded in Beijing, the country’s capital, Beijing. However, the viral outbreak has reached northeastern Liaoning province and other areas in China.
China New Virsus: Current Reports
This week, WHO issued a report, “According to China’s health department, known pathogens, such as influenza virus, adenoviruses, and RSV, cause the pneumonia outbreak”. It is associated with mild symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, and coughing.
However, the most severe cases are associated with “Mycoplasma pneumoniae”, a bacterial virus causing lethal pneumonia. The bacterium infects the mucus lining of the lungs and causes difficulty breathing. Oftentimes, it is called ‘walking pneumonia’. The symptoms usually last for a few days and cause mild discomfort.
Benjamin Cowling, an epidemiologist at the University of Hong Kong, said that the surge of illness was not“shocking”. “This is a typical ‘winter surge’ in acute respiratory infections,”. It is happening slightly earlier this year, perhaps because of increased population susceptibility to respiratory infections resulting from three years of COVID measures.” He added.
Symptoms Of The Virus
The Chinese healthcare professionals said that “Years of isolation have weakened the immune system”. Children in growth years and under-development are more prone to the virus. Though, it is causing only mild pneumonia-like symptoms, proper sanitation and preventive measures are necessary.
Given that, here are some symptoms associated with China New Virus.
Fever
Lung inflammation without a cough
Pulmonary nodules, lumps on the lungs
Difficulty breathing
Lethargy
Chest Pain
India’s Response To The New Virus
If you are wondering, How is India Preparing for China New Virus? Let me tell you the country has “no-reported” cases yet. However, it is alarming and requires proper sanitization for prevention. States such as Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Uttarakhand are following proper COVID guidelines and imposing restrictions on travel to China.
Conclusion
The “China New Virus” is causing respiratory illness in children nationwide. Known pathogens such as influenza virus, adenoviruses, and RSV are also responsible for causing the surge of hospitalization cases in China. While the disease is caused by “Mycoplasmic Pneumonea”, other viruses are also attacking children due to poor immunity.

The Pandemic Will Be More Deadly This Year - Look At India
On Sunday alone, 261,500 new infections were recorded. That's as bad as the U.S. during all but the worst five days of the pandemic in December and early January.
Covid-19 is going to kill more people in 2021 than it did last year. If you want to see why, look at what's happening in India.
Cases have been surging in the country of 1.37 billion people. On Sunday alone, 261,500 new infections were recorded. That's as bad as the U.S. during all but the worst five days of the pandemic in December and early January. Case counts are rising far more quickly, too. Average infection numbers over the past seven days have run at nearly three times the level two weeks ago, a pace of growth that the U.S. last saw in the early days of the outbreak a year ago.
The real numbers may be yet higher. The city of Bhopal used Covid-19 protocols to cremate or bury 84 people last Tuesday, according to the Hindustan Times, while declaring only five Covid deaths. The B.1.617 variant, which isn't well understood yet, has features associated with higher infection rates and lower antibody resistance. It's turning up in more than half of viral samples taken in India.
As caseloads push medical facilities toward capacity, the health system itself is starting to crack. Vaccine stocks, hospital beds and even oxygen supplies are running short, leading to bitter arguments between the states and the federal government. In some places, the dead are being transported by truck because cities have run out of hearses. Elsewhere, crematoria have started to break down because of the sheer number of bodies being burned.
If things don't change soon, the country will be facing 3,000 deaths a day -- twice its current level, and 10 times what was being seen through most of this year -- Bhramar Mukherjee, a biostatistician at the University of Michigan, wrote last week.
As my colleague Mihir Sharma has written, arrogance, hyper-nationalism and incompetence helped foster a fatal sense of complacency amid India's apparent success against the outbreak earlier this year. Until a few weeks ago, lockdown restrictions had been progressively loosening for months. Cinemas were allowed to open to full capacity Feb. 1. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan declared the country "in the endgame of the Covid-19 pandemic" in early March, at almost precisely the point that cases started to surge again.
Worryingly, the clear signs of a second wave haven't prompted much course correction since. With elections underway in the states of Assam and West Bengal, the Twitter feed of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been interspersing updates about the virus with Trump-style footage of him, unmasked, addressing mass rallies:
The other side isn't necessarily doing much better, either. West Bengal's chief minister, an opponent of Modi's BJP, only got around to canceling her campaign rallies Sunday.
Worse may be to come. The Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage festival that's normally the largest mass gathering on earth, is now underway on the banks of the Ganges, attended by an estimated 3.5 million people. That's well down on the numbers in a normal year, and even Modi, far too late, urged over the weekend that the event be purely "symbolic" rather than physical. Still, it's far above the mere thousands allowed to other mass events like last year's Hajj in Saudi Arabia and Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq.
Even held outdoors, such events carry a profound risk of spreading the most infectious variants to every corner of the country. Close to 10% of people returning to Gujarat's largest city, Ahmedabad, from the festival tested positive for Covid over the weekend, the Press Trust of India reported Monday. Hitherto, the coronavirus has mostly hit the relatively affluent, urbanized parts of the country that are best able to cope with it, such as the southern states of Kerala and Karnataka, the capital Delhi, and Maharashtra, home to Mumbai. If the Kumbh Mela seeds it in rural districts, where the majority of India's population lives, the death toll could be higher still.
There's a lesson in this for the world. The 1.2 million people who've died from Covid so far this year already represent about two-thirds of the 1.8 million fatalities in 2020. Yet people are behaving as if it's already over. That's removing the sense of unified urgency that led many nations to make such strides in turning around the pandemic last year.
Vaccine supplies for the richest (and, thanks to global initiatives, poorest) countries are relatively ample. Yet those for middle-income nations, where the majority of the planet's population lives, are grossly inadequate, blocked by restrictive patent rules. India, with one of the world's largest pharmaceutical industries, is far better placed than most midsize economies to cope, but even it is crumbling under the strain.
The more people infected in emerging countries while the rest of the world looks away, the more opportunities Covid-19 will have to develop into fresh strains and prolong this death and misery. We must do better. The globe is still under attack, but our defenses are in disarray.

AP COVID-19 vaccine by 15 August, says ICMR India's apex medical body ICMR said Friday that it has identified 12 clinical trial sites, including medical institutions and hospitals, and has asked their principal investigators to ensure that the subject enrolment is initiated no later than 7 July. The trial sites included AIIMS, New Delhi, AIIMS, Patna and SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre in Tamil Nadu. In its letter to principal investigators of the 12 sites, ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava noted that the clinical trial of Covaxin is one of the "top priority projects which is being monitored at the top-most level of the government". However, it is not clear how the clinical trials can be completed and the vaccine released on 15 August when the normal period for a vaccine to be approved is 12 to 18 months. Several experts have questioned the ICMR's timeline, asking if the efficacy of the vaccine is "pre-decided" and cautioned it from applying "excess pressure". Over seven vaccines are being researched in India and only Bharat Biotech's COVAXIN and Zydus' ZyCoV-D have got the go-ahead to start human clinical trials, just this week. Globally, over 100 candidates are being tested on humans but no vaccine has yet been approved. Speaking to Firstpost, Bharat Biotech chairman Dr Krishna Ella, said said that COVAXIN was reported to be safe and immunogenic in all animals. "We have now moved forward towards the clinical development of this vaccine," he added. Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of Covaxin in COVID-19 patients will begin this month. According to PTI, Zydus said that is planning to initiate the clinical trials in July 2020 across multiple sites in India in over 1,000 subjects, however, the company did not say when the vaccine will be ready for commercial use, unlike Covaxin, which is targeting for release on 15 August. The vaccine candidate, ZyCoV-D, showed a "strong immune response" in animal studies, and the antibodies produced were able to completely neutralise the wild type virus, Zydus said. OMICRON SCARE: NEW STRAIN OF COVID-19
The variant scientifically known, B.1.1.529, also named Omicron was little known to the public until November 24. It started circulating in South Africa as a 'variant of concern'. The samples tested in the Lancet laboratory drilled innumerable mutations, especially on the spike protein that the virus uses to enter human cells. Early indications are that this variant is possibly even more transmissible than the highly infectious Delta variant and that COVID-19 vaccines may be less effective against it. South Africa reported a four-fold increase in new cases by the start of December, coexisting with the emergence of Omicron.
📷
The discovery of the new variant has caused global alarm. Countries have started limiting travel from the region and imposing other restrictions for fear it could spread quickly, even in vaccinated populations. How severe are the symptoms compared with previous versions, how good is the new variant at dodging immunity from vaccines or past illness, and how will it differ among age groups remains unanswered. Preliminary evidence suggests that people who have previously had COVID-19 could become reinfected more easily with Omicron, but the information is limited. The PCR tests are proved effective in detecting infection, including infection with Omicron. WHO(World Health Organisation) encourages countries to contribute to the collection by sharing data of hospitalised patients through the WHO COVID-19 Clinical Data Platform, which will help rapidly determine clinical characteristics and patient outcomes and how mutations in Omicron alter the behaviour of the virus.
There are several actions recommended by WHO for countries to undertake: 1)Enhancing surveillance and sequencing of cases. 2)Sharing genome sequences on publicly available databases, such as GISAID. 3)Reporting initial cases or clusters to WHO. 4)Performing field investigations and laboratory assessments to better understand if Omicron has different transmission or disease characteristics or impacts the effectiveness of vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics or public health and social measures.
The Union health ministry has listed the UK, South Africa, Brazil, Botswana, China, Mauritius, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Singapore, Hong Kong and Israel as 'at risk' countries. Though India's Covid cases have continued to witness a downward trend, the union health ministry altered travel rules for international arrivals amid the concern around the Omicron. Secretary Rajesh Bhushan held a meeting with states and Union territories, during which he asked them to upgrade testing against Covid-19 and enhance the testing infrastructure. All international passengers are required to submit 14 days' travel history and upload negative Covid test results on the Air Suvidha portal. States were also asked to test international passengers on their day of arrival, arriving from 'at risk' countries and send samples of people found positive to designated labs for genome sequencing. The new travel guidelines became active on December 1, 2021.
On the lookout for a new Omicron virus, six travellers from South Africa or other 'at risk' countries were found COVID positive within a fortnight in Mumbai. All the patients are asymptomatic to Omicron and placed in quarantine. They would be tested for Covid-19 on the second, fourth and seventh days of quarantine. Several cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have sprung up in India, with 21 new cases on Sunday in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat Rajasthan and Delhi, With Rajasthan having the most number of Omicron cases at 9 and Maharashtra at 8.
The emergence of the Omicron COVID-19 variant once again shows that the pandemic is far from over. Covid-appropriate behaviour is critical for breaking the chain of transmission. Wear masks, maintain social distance and good ventilation in all shared spaces, wash and sanitise hands and surfaces regularly.

Coronavirus updates | January 20, 2022
India is seeing relatively low mortality in the ongoing COVID-19 surge because of enhanced vaccination cover, said V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, adding that 6.5 crore persons who were due for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine had not taken it so far.
“They should take this dose to ensure that they don’t prove to be the weak link in the fight against the pandemic. Anybody who is not protected can spread the infection too,” Dr. Paul said during the weekly Health Ministry press conference on Thursday.
For the first time, the Health Ministry termed the present surge the third wave” of the pandemic in the country, adding that Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi are among the top contributors to the COVID-19 surge. In the week ending on January 19, 515 districts reported a weekly case positivity of more than 5%.

Chennai-based medical device firm Kriya Medical Technologies on Thursday said it has received Indian Council of Medical Research approval for Krivida Novus COVID-19 testing kit—developed in collaboration with ImmuGenix Bioscience—that can also detect the Omicron variant.
The kit detects the SARS-CoV-2 virus and also differentiates the Omicron variant from Delta and other variants. The test takes about 45 minutes to detect the infection and determine the variant, the company said in a statement.

New Zealand says it won’t use lockdowns when Omicron spreads
New Zealand is among the few remaining countries to have avoided any outbreaks of the omicron variant — but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Thursday an outbreak was inevitable and the nation would tighten restrictions as soon as one was detected.
But she also said that New Zealand would not impose the lockdowns that it has used previously, including for the delta variant.
“This stage of the pandemic is different to what we have dealt with before. Omicron is more transmissible,” Ms. Ardern said.- AP

Panel recommends regular market approval for Covishield and Covaxin
The Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has recommended granting regular market approval to COVID-19 vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, in the adult population, subject to certain conditions, confirmed an official on Wednesday.
Both the vaccines are currently only authorised for emergency use in India and their application was reviewed for the second time on Wednesday before the recommendations were made, he said.

U.S. begins offering free COVID test kits, but doubts persist
For the first time, all Americans can log on to a government website and order free, at-home COVID-19 tests. But the White House push may do little to ease the omicron surge, and experts say Washington will have to do a lot more to fix the country’s long-troubled testing system.
The website, COVIDTests.gov, allows people to order four at-home tests per household and have them delivered by mail. But the tests won’t arrive for seven to 12 days, after omicron cases are expected to peak in many parts of the U.S.
The White House also announced Wednesday that it will begin making 400 million N95 masks available for free at pharmacies and community health centers.- AP

WHO(World Health Organisation) encourages countries to contribute to the collection by sharing data of hospitalised patients through the WHO COVID-19
Clinical Data Platform
, which will help rapidly determine clinical characteristics and patient outcomes and how mutations in Omicron alter the behaviour of the virus.
