Three's a Crowd . 25 November 2024 . Zrinyi's Charge from the Fortress of Szigetvar . Johann Peter Krafft
Johann Peter Krafft (15 September 1780, Hanau - 28 October 1856, Vienna) was a German-born Austrian painter who specialized in portraits, historical works, and genre scenes.
Early life and education His father was an enamel painter who originally came from a family of wine merchants in Alsace. His brother, Joseph Krafft (1786-1828), also became a painter of portrait miniatures. By the age of ten, Krafft was already attending a drawing school.
In 1799, he and sister were sent to live with an aunt in Vienna, where he immediately enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied history painting with Heinrich Friedrich Füger.
In 1802, he travelled to Paris with Veit Hanns Schnorr von Carolsfeld to continue his studies. There, he made the acquaintance of Jacques-Louis David and François Gérard, who had a major influence on his style.
Career Krafft returned to Vienna in 1805, where he established himself as a portrait painter. From 1808 to 1809, he went on a study trip through Italy and became a member of the Academy in 1813. Two years later, he married Juliana Preisinger, and three of their children became painters: Marie (1812–1885), Albrecht (1816–1847) and Julie (1821–1903). He was appointed a Professor at the Academy in 1823.
In 1828, he was named Director of the Galerie Belvedere, a position he held until his death. He became an Academic Counselor in 1835. Over the next few years, he travelled to Munich, Dresden and Venice, where he purchased 80 works for the museum. He was also employed as an expert on the preservation of monuments, working at Karlstein Castle, Schönbrunn Palace and the Jesuit Church.
Death and legacy Krafft died on 20 October 1856 and was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery in Vienna. In 1885, a street in the Leopoldstadt district of the city was named after him.

10 tiny towns in the Czech Republic with an interesting history
Almost every seemingly secluded and tiny corner of the Czech Republic actually hides wonders - breathtaking historical buildings and attractions. We have prepared ten picturesque Czech towns that can be a real find for a traveler.
Cesky Krumlov
Possessing a special energy, Cesky Krumlov, despite its rather modest size, would be hard pressed to call it a single-use city. Travelers admit that with its leisurely rhythm and ancient charm, the town makes you fall in love the first time and makes you think about returning here again and again. By the way, the most beautiful and interesting part of the city territory, the historical center, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so its significance is difficult to overestimate. Key Attractions: Krumlov Castle, historical center, Church of St. Vitus
Kunta Gora
And this city is a real treasure trove of a wide variety of historical attractions - from a Gothic temple to a medieval silver mine. But, perhaps, one of the most interesting places in this region is the ossuary, located in the near suburb of Kutna Hora - Sedlec. In fact, this frightening and at the same time attractive attraction is a church entirely created from the bones of thousands of people. Every year, thousands of tourists come to the Czech Republic to see one of the largest such buildings with their own eyes. Key Attractions: Ossuary, Cathedral of St. Barbara, Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist

Olomouc
Olomouc is often (and I must say, quite deservedly) ranked among the Czech cities that can easily compete with Prague itself in the fight for the traveler’s attention. It is not surprising, because in its small territory there is such a significant concentration of historical attractions that the capital would be envious. Just by starting a walk around the city, you can find something almost everywhere worthy of a place on your Instagram - the local baroque squares and fountains are extremely photogenic. Key Attractions: Column of the Holy Trinity, St. Wenceslas Cathedral, Church of St. Mauritius
Turnov
In addition to boasting a rich and eventful history, Turnov is also fortunate to be located in a region with breathtaking natural scenery, and it is no coincidence that it is often chosen as a starting point for independent travel in Czech Bohemia. Walking around the town, you just need to look around - everything here is beautiful and exciting. And also, for the information of lovely ladies, this is where the Czech pomegranate factory is located, where you can buy stone products at reasonable prices. Key attractions: Old town, ancient Church of St. Nicholas
Karlstein
Karlštejn is the name of a luxurious fortress that should take its rightful place on our list. The castle was prudently built on a high cliff covered with greenery, which gives it even more charm. At the foot of this hill lies a tiny settlement of the same name. Key Attractions: Karlstejn fortress
Trebon
Treboň is not only the cradle of the country's rich historical heritage, but also the birthplace of the best creators of local history: composer Josef Tribenze, as well as Czech football star Karel Poborský. Key Attractions: Church of St. Elizabeth, Trebon Castle, ramparts
Marianske Lazne
Guests from all over the world flock here in an inexhaustible stream - primarily to drink water from local sources and improve their health. The healing power of this place was once experienced by Chopin, Wagner, Goethe (their house-museums and monuments can be visited in the city today) and many others. A pleasant bonus for vacationers has always been the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this cozy garden city. Key Attractions: singing fountain, house-museum "Monument to Chopin", monument to Goethe
Cheb
By the way, the same Goethe was clearly partial to another tiny pearl of the Czech Republic - the town of Cheb in the region of the same name. Its streets are remembered even more - life has been in full swing here since the times of the Holy Roman Empire. In its modern form, Cheb is a calm and prim, but culturally quite developed town with well-preserved examples of buildings from the early Middle Ages. Key Attractions: Imperial Palatinate, St. George's Square, St. Nicholas Church
Ceske Budejovice
This town became popular many centuries ago, immediately after its founding, because it was here that many European trade routes converged: both land and water (the city is washed by two rivers). All this, of course, contributed to its systematic development in various styles. Travelers can still enjoy the fruits of urban development of those times by taking a walk around Ceske Budejovice. Key Attractions: Samson statue in the city square, Town Hall, Black Tower, Dominican monastery
Beneshov
And this neat town, in its rather long history, has survived many turmoil, raids, wars and even arson. However, by some miracle, the town still survived and today happily welcomes guests, showing them the surviving sights. In addition, in the immediate vicinity of Benesov there is perhaps the most beautiful castle in the Czech Republic - the luxurious Konopiste, made in the Gothic style. Key Attractions: Church of St. Nicholas, Church of St. Anne

Classic Euro Horror from Masters of the Macabre: Mario Bava, Jean Rollin & Jess Franco Now Available Digitally on Kino Now
With October upon us, Kino Now brings you a selection of Euro Horror classics from three masters of the macabre: Mario Bava, Jean Rollin, and Jess Franco.
These stylish horror auteurs each brought a unique approach to the genre that transformed it in exciting new directions. Bava’s colorful, lurid tales of terror have been cited as an influence on everyone from Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola to Quentin Tarantino and Tim Burton. Rollin’s dark, dreamlike fantasies pioneered the erotic vampire genre and Franco’s uncompromising exploitation films had a major impact on slasher movies to follow.
Get ready for Halloween with these and other Euro Horror cult favorites listed below! Available on KinoNow.com
Kill, Baby...Kill! Directed by Mario Bava In a turn of the century Transylvanian village, a doctor arrives to investigate a young maid’s mysterious death, only to learn the legend of a deceased girl whose ball-bouncing ghost may be driving the locals to suicide… With its hallucinatory colors and sinister moods, this is the pinnacle of Gothic Euro-horror, an influence on Scorsese, Lynch, Fellini, Argento, del Toro, and countless others, and the ideal entry point into Mario Bava’s body of work.
Black Sunday Directed by Mario Bava After being crucified for devil worship, Barbara Steele, in her breakthrough role, is brought back to life to haunt her 19th-century descendants, and sets her sights on possessing young Katia (also played by Steele). Adapted from a Nikolai Gogol short story and filled with cobwebs and blood, Bava’s first on-screen directorial credit defined Italian Gothic and remains a richly atmospheric masterwork.
Fascination Directed by Jean Rollin Inspired by a purportedly fact-based Jean Lorrain short story, one of Jean Rollin’s most-admired works showcases his frequent collaborator Brigitte Lahaie (at the time France’s top adult-films star) and discovery Franka Mai (later a novelist). It’s the early 20th century, and thief Jean-Marie Lemaire double-crosses his partners in crime and hides out in a château, confident he can handle chambermaids Lahaie and Mai But all bets are off, even before the sun goes down.
The Iron Rose Directed by Jean Rollin Eerie and sensual, this love story finds Jean Rollin in a particularly contemplative mode. Françoise Pascal (later a UK sitcom star) and Hugues Quester (later of Kieslowski’s Blue) catch each other’s eye and flirt their way into a graveyard frolic. After canoodling in a tomb, they emerge into a nighttime world and find themselves lost and disoriented, with the sinking feeling of a no-exit scenario. Rollin trouper Mireille Dargent appears—as she often would for him—in clown makeup.
Female Vampire Directed by Jess Franco Channeling his deepest libidinal desires and darkest fears into films, with no apparent concern for narrative convention or the boundaries of mainstream taste, Jess Franco is a cinematic iconoclast. Here, his wife Lina Romay stars as the mysterious Countess Irina Karlstein, a beautiful vampiress who feeds on victims at their moments of sexual climax. Because she destroys those whose essence she consumes, Irina is doomed to a life of solitude, wandering through the Western Coast of Europe in a dreamlike state, shrouded in a lush musical score by Daniel White.
The Awful Dr. Orlof Directed by Jess Franco Jess Franco’s career was launched by what is generally considered the first horror film produced in Spain. Cloaking the story in the visual style of the British gothic film, Franco injected Orlof with the kind of morbid eroticism that would quickly become his signature. Howard Vernon stars as a diabolical surgeon who, with the help of his blind minion Morpho (Ricardo Valle), lures beautiful women into the operating room of his stone castle, so they may provide the raw materials for a series of experimental face grafts for his disfigured daughter.

#10yearsagotoday Day 101: Karlstein Castle Our one excursion was out to Karlstein Castle, a 40 minute drive southwest of Prague. My friend DJ lives in the village by the castle, and he had some time to show me a few of his new piano arrangements, including some for 4 hands. He invited me to try them, and it transpired that this was the first time they had been performed by two humans. A world premiere performance! Hitherto, he had simulated the duet using computer MIDI technology. I think this is the first time I'd tried any 4H works in nearly 7 years - and many months away from any piano practise didn't help. Note also the acoustically-dead rug that I had brought along. Bondi had practically grown up with me playing DJ's arrangements on the piano back in Seattle. Leaving DJ, we continued up to the castle, running the gauntlet of tourist stalls. I don't know how you can make your way out to a 14th century Czech castle, climb halfway up a crag, and not buy a turtle-motto tie-dyed sarong or a Nemo bag. #alaskanmalamute #EuropeSpring2007 #prague #czechrepublic #roadtrip #praga #piano #karlstein #karlsteincastle (at Hrad Karlštejn)

Castle's Rock - 12 April 2018 Karlstejn Castle Prague, Czech Republic
Karlštejn Castle (Czech: hrad Karlštejn; German: Burg Karlstein) is a large Gothic castle founded 1348 CE by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor-elect and King of Bohemia. The castle served as a place for safekeeping the Imperial Regalia as well as the Bohemian/Czech crown jewels, holy relics, and other royal treasures. Located about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southwest of Prague above the village of the same name, it is one of the most famous and most frequently visited castles in the Czech Republic.
Founded in 1348, the construction works were directed by the later Karlštejn burgrave Vitus of Bítov, but there are no records of the builder himself. Some historians speculate that Matthias of Arras may be credited with being the architect, but he had already died by 1352. It is likely that there was not a progressive and cunning architect, but a brilliant civil engineer who dexterously and with a necessary mathematical accuracy solved technically exigent problems that issued from the emperor's ideas and requests. Instead, Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV personally supervised the construction works and interior decoration. A little known fact is that the Emperor hired Palestinian region labour for the remaining work. Construction was finished nearly twenty years later in 1365 when the "heart" of the treasury – the Chapel of the Holy Cross situated in the Great tower – was consecrated.
Following the outbreak of the Hussite Wars, the Imperial Regalia were evacuated in 1421 and brought via Hungary to Nuremberg. In 1422, during the siege of the castle, Hussite attackers used biological warfare when Prince Sigismund Korybut used catapults to throw dead (but not plague-infected) bodies and 2,000 carriage-loads of dung over the walls, apparently managing to spread infection among the defenders.
Later, the Bohemian crown jewels were moved to the castle and were kept there for almost two centuries, with some short breaks. The castle underwent several reconstructions: in late Gothic style after 1480, in Renaissance style in the last quarter of the 16th century. In 1487, the big tower was damaged by fire and during the 16th century there were several adaptations. During the Thirty Years' War in 1619, the coronation jewels and the archive were brought to Prague, and in 1620, the castle was turned over to Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor. After having been conquered in 1648 by Swedes, it fell in disrepair. Finally, a neo-Gothic reconstruction was carried out by Josef Mocker between 1887 and 1899, giving the castle its present look.
The nearby village was founded during the construction of the castle and bore its name until it was renamed to Buda in the wake of the Hussite Wars. Renamed to Budňany in the 18th century, it was merged with Poučník and called Karlštejn (Beroun District). There is a golf club named after the castle nearby.
