Two teachers work together at the same high school. Hikawa Toru is a methodical but naive, elite graduate from the University of Tokyo while Akagi Masashi is a physical education teacher who is kind-hearted but a little rough around the edges. Before Akagi knows it, he finds himself attracted to Hikawa, whose personality is the opposite of his own. Unable to hold back anymore, he kisses Hikawa one night.  Seen by a passing student, everyone including the student body, parents, and even the school principal will become involved. Every time you mention a show your watching that doesn't have a big tumblr fandom like my day or stage of love I squeal a little because one of the cool kids is watching the same shows as me 😍. I do wonder though if you've watched Kare ga Boku ni Koishita Wake? Someone has subbed it on YouTube and no one is talking about it 😭.

I try to give almost everything a chance bc that’s how you discover hidden gems ;) so about kare ga boku ni koishita, I was hyped bc I was told one of the actors was quite a huge japanese actor but then I gave the first 2 eps a try and...... I couldn’t :’( the production was really bad & the story was kinda all over the place. I’m sure the actors did their best with the material they were given but for me the jokes & overacting fell flat. so yeah, sorry I can’t join you in your excitement, I really wanted to like it but the cringe was too much... (and that’s coming from someone completely desensitized to cringe thanks to thai dramas lmao)

takumi-kun series 1 (2007) - stars kato keisuke (kr ixa). classic bad tropey mid aughties BL, set at an all boys school for full commitment to the bit.

ai no kotodama (2008) - stars tokuyama hidenori (kr kickhopper / thebee). for an older BL film it's actually quite sweet and cute, about an established relationship between the leads.

bokura no ai no kanade (2008) - stars uchiyama masato (kr punchhopper / thebee). i know i watched this years ago but have no real memory of it. iirc it's just kinda ok?

doushitemo furetakunai (2014) - stars taniguchi masashi (kr amazon alpha). office romance. movie adaptation of one of my favorite BL manga that does a pretty solid job with it.

hana wa saku ka (2018) - stars amano kousei (kr garren / also the principal from fourze). never watched this subbed but i don't think subs would've improved its awkward stiltedness much. not really recommendable.

kinou nani tabeta? (2019) - stars nishijima hidetoshi whom i enjoy being able to count as a kamen rider now bc of black sun. i'm including it on this list but of course it's not really BL by any classic definition, rather just a slice of life about two basically married middle aged guys. the sequel movie has isomura hayato (kr necrom) and yamamoto koji (kr ichigata) as a side couple, i believe.

cherry magic (2020) - stars akaso eiji (kr cross-z). super cute and well-done office romance where the lead gains the ability to read minds and discovers his handsome coworker is way into him.

kare ga boku ni koishita wake (2020) - stars yamamoto yusuke (kr sasword). haven't seen this so can't comment on the quality but my impression is "low budget and too short to really be anything."

zettai BL ni naru (2021) - stars inukai atsuhiro (kr build). a parody special about a guy who lives as a background character in "the world of BL" and tries to avoid falling into a cliche romance (to no avail it would seem).

boku mo aitsu mo shinrodesu (2022) - stars ijima hiroki (kr ex-aid). special about 2 guys getting married, but one of them somehow hasn't told his parents he's marrying a man yet.

sing in love (2022) - stars inaba yuu (kr mach). just came out so probably won't be available to watch for a while. seems to contain some darker themes so be warned.

old fashion cupcake (2022) - stars takeda kouhei (kr grease/also otoya kiva). office romance. first ep is airing in a few days so we'll see if it's good or not. looks pretty solid from the previews.

senpai, danjite koidewa! (2022) - stars naito shuichiro (kr saber) and seto toshiki (kr brave). another office romance (seem to be popular since cherimaho changed da world). also airing soon.

Hello ABL. First of all, let me just say, that I love your devotion to Seven Days. It was my very first bl and what got me to discover the genre. Of course it was all downhill from there lol. Just kidding. Maybe... Anyway. I've been doing this thing since the beginning of the year where I watch older jbls (usually before 2020, although that is not old by any stretch) to kinda get a broader view of the genre in Japan. I haven't been in this for that long so I'm still catching up. Some of the stuff I've watched so far. All the Pornographer series/films ; Dangerous Drugs of Sex; Takimu-kun 1 & 2; Junjou (2010); Athlete (2019) Udagawachou de Matteteyo (2015); Ai no Kotodama (2008) No Touching At All (2014) ; The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese (2020). I've also watched things like His (series and film), Restart coming back home, Life Love on the Line, and I'm probably missing a couple but not a lot. So I was wondering if you had more recs for me. Anything you can think would fit with what I'm trying to do.
