So, a while ago, you identified as bi but you've now realized you are a lesbian. What made you realize that?

ahhh this is an excellent question! thank you!

short answer is i had to work through my internalized homophobia and compulsory heteronormativity before i could accept myself.

so around my sophomore year of college i realized i was attracted to women and it lowkey freaked me out. i was like “yeah i like women but im DEF going to end up with a man because i have to because that’s how i was raised so i’ll call myself bi and forget about the whole thing” and like kind of swept the issue under the rug because it didn’t matter if I liked women or not I was gonna end up with a man. fast forward a year or so and through some really terrible dating experiences and to the end of my junior year of college. 

long story short there was a girl i was best friends with and we stopped being best friends and it made furious and I was angry all the time that we were no longer friends yada yada (if you’ve seen She-Ra, I was Catra.) and one night I was super drunk and i uhhhhhhh hooked up with her ex boyfriend (oops). and there was LITERALLY a moment while I was kissing him that I was like “he’s terrible at this. i wish he was a girl.” and then i kind of like froze and I was like “oh my god im a lesbian” (while making out with him) and I was like “oh my god i wish i was kissing HER instead” and then like a week later I saw Love, Simon in theatres and I sobbed my eyes out in the theatres because I knew I was gay and didn’t know how to handle it

and so im like freaking out and unsure about everything because I was like “I think i might be a lesbian but what if I dont WANT to be a lesbian because im supposed to end up with a guy!!!” and that summer I did summer stock in Oberlin, Ohio, where Alison Bechdel went to college. And for the first time in my life i was deeply surrounded by queer people. One of my best friends from college is bi and was instrumental in my realizing of my sexuality (Sup, Kara) but my college was mostly filled with straight people. In Oberlin I was SURROUNDED by queer people who were confident in themselves and I made a lot of really great friends who helped me find myself. I also dove into queer culture: movies, tv shows, books, yada yada the works. That was the summer I learned about comp het. and I was like iM A LESBIAN! 

for like. three weeks.

and then i panicked again and said I was bisexual and shoved the issue under the rug. (I had a bit of a rocky road to accepting myself lmao)

so for a few more months I allowed myself to truly get comfortable with the idea of being a lesbian and being gay and on October 14th, 2018, I was out at a bar with the cast of the show I was working on and honestly, i dont remember a lot of the details because I was SUPER drunk that night but I was talking with another girl about sexuality and I remember being like “I really WANT to be a lesbian but I just dont know that i am” and she was like “if you want to be a lesbian, you’re a lesbian. you dont need anyone’s permission to be who you are” or some shit like that. idk. the details are fuzzy. and i was like “oh my god I’m a LESBIAN” and i even went home that night and posted to tumblr “so i might be a lesbian” lmao

the next day i went to the library and checked out two books on sappho and three books on lesbianism and read them all.

Three days later I called my parents and told them.

and I started living my life openly to my friends and people in my immediate area. My extended family didn’t know until i came out to my grandmother on thanksgiving of 2019. My brothers didn’t find out until March 2020. I came out on facebook in April 2020. It was a gradual process. but now I’m fully out!

So really, when you look back at my whole life, there were MANY signals that I was a big ole lesbian (like getting it on with a guy and thinking “I don’t know what I’m doing with his body. maybe if it was a girl I would know what I was doing” and that was BEFORE the ex best friend ex boyfriend incident) but I was too scared to admit them. I had to take my own journey and work through a lot of internal stuff before I could admit what I already knew in my heart.

10 Artists Who Were Also Mothers

Who said that you can’t be a mother and an artist at the same time?

  The patriarchy, for one, but surprisingly, a lot of female artists as well. Even artists like Mary Cassatt and Judy Chicago whose work primarily featured themes of motherhood and femininity never had children because they believed it would compromise the quality of their art. But there were actually a handful of successful female artists who were also pretty good mothers, they just seldom get the credit for doing both. For Mother’s Day -which should really be everyday- we’re celebrating our favorite badass moms who significantly impacted the art world.

Artemisia Gentileschi

  Artemisia Gentileschi had one daughter with two names- Prudentia (after her mother who passed away early in Artemisia’s childhood) and Palmira. She had her daughter very early on in her career and continued to paint up until her death when her daughter was well into adulthood. Like her mother, Prudentia/Palmira also became a painter, though none of her works are currently known.

Judith Leyster

Not too much is known about Judith Leyster. She didn’t really get recognition for her paintings for a while as they were usually credited to the “Wife of Molenaer” who was a more famous painter at the time. Leyster had five children with Molenaer, but only two survived into adulthood. With the information on her surviving dated works, it looks like Leyster wasn’t as prolific once she got married and had children, but she still continued to paint up until a few years before her death in 1660.

“The beauty of her heavenly face, that expressed benevolence and goodness, and whose features were so regular and delicate, the loveliness of her figure, neck, and arms, the exquisite freshness of her complexion – all was enchanting beyond anything imaginable”

Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun had one child, Jeanne Julie Louise, who she nicknamed “Brunette.” Vigee Le Brun’s first self portrait of her and Julie caused a scandal when it was exhibited simply because she was depicted smiling open-mouthed -- how dare she be visibly happy with her child?! During the French Revolution, Vigee Le Brun fled France with Julie to Italy, Austria, and then finally Russia. It was in Russia that their relationship crumbled; Julie married a man that her mother strongly disapproved of, and Elisabeth Louise then shunned her from her life, refusing to provide for her daughter when both were back in France. It's hard to read that the two had such a strained relationship when looking at these adorable self-portraits.

  Apparently Julie is a popular name for the daughters of female artists. Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot married Edouard Manet’s younger brother Eugene and had her only child Julie Manet, who often posted as a model for Morisot and other Impressionists. When Julie was 16 she became ill with influenza (get your shots people!). Morisot eventually got the same infection by taking care of Julie and subsequently died not long after. Morisot’s devotion to her daughter literally killed her.

  Suzanne Valadon wasn’t just a mom, she was a single mom! She had her son Maurice when she was an 18-year-old model for artists. Her mother Madeleine helped take care of Maurice, and the two often served as models for Valadon’s domestic sketches that gave her recognition and critical acclaim. Maurice was a troubled alcoholic suffering from mental illness, and it was his mother who encouraged him to try painting. Not too long after, Maurice ended up being a successful artist himself! Mother truly knows best.

  Barbara Hepworth was the ultimate mom/artist. She raised four children while working along her husband Ben Nicholson in the St. Ives artists’ colony. She often wrote about how being a mother and an artist was never a conflicting process and that having a family actually improved the quality of her sculptures. Her eldest son Paul was killed in a plane crash in 1953, prompting a devastated Hepworth to take a trip to Greece with a good friend. When she came back, her sculptures had a distinctly Greek influence. Her son Simon was also an artist, but died young from alcoholism. Her daughter Sarah married Sir Alan Bowness, former director of the Tate Gallery. Both she and her sister Rachel are in charge of their mother’s estate.

  “They had two children fairly quickly, then a third one shortly thereafter. There was no room, really, to do sculpture in the apartment. So she painted.”

  Louise Bourgeois had three children within the span of three years! She and her husband Robert Goldwater adopted Michel from France in 1939, then she gave birth to Jean-Louise in 1940 and Alain in 1941. Despite having her hands and her house full, she didn’t give up on her artwork and continued to create paintings, drawings, and sculptures until her death in 2010. She is survived by her sons Alain and Jean-Louise, an architectural expert on Adobe who recently donated his $4 million house to Native Americans as a meeting house. Louise would have been proud.  

Yoko Ono

  Avant-garde artist Yoko Ono had her daughter Kyoko with her second husband Anthony Cox. Not longer after she filed for divorce and met John Lennon. When Kyoko was eight, she and Cox disappeared in the middle of a custody battle; Ono was unable to find Kyojo until she was 35. Lennon and Ono had one child, Sean Lennon, who is currently pursuing music with his band “The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.”

  Jenny Holzer

  “When my daughter was young, she thought all electronic signs were mine.”

  Jenny Holzer gave birth to Lili Holzer (now Holzer-Grier) in 1989. Her daughter’s birth inspired Holzer’s works Laments and Truism 4 (Mother and Child) in 1990. Lili Holzer-Grier is now a successful photographer based in New York, where her mother also currently lives. Both Holzer's and her daughter’s artwork portray American hypocrisy and injustice.

  Kara Walker had her daughter Octavia early in her career, showing us that it really isn’t impossible to gain international fame in the art world while raising a child. Walker incorporated her daughter’s voice into 8 Possible Beginnings to help demonstrate how the heritage of American slavery affects women of color as artists. Octavia is now a photographer studying at Oberlin College.

  Of course, you don’t have to be a successful artist to be a successful mom. Shout-out to all mothers out there who are able to juggle both their careers and their children. And an additional thanks to mothers everywhere for being awesome women and continually inspiring us all to produce and admire great art. “Mom” upside-down spells “wow” for a reason! Now go call your mom and tell her you love her.

Good morning, @rdu_baton! My name is Kara and I’ll be holding the baton for the day. I’ve lived in and around Raleigh since I was 14 except a five year stint I spent in Nashville (🧡 Music City!). I graduated from NCSU with an English degree focused on writing and editing. I’ve been writing poetry and short stories since I was in the first grade (follow my writing insta @kara_victoria if you are so inclined). That degree segued quite nicely into a career in the nonprofit where I’ve been for almost two decades. I am currently the Associate and Creative Director of the @ncmoh_associates, the friends group of the @ncmuseumhistory. I LOVE my job and I love this state, so I’m super pumped about today. . . I live in University Park and each morning, I walk three(ish) miles around Cameron Village, and end my walk here. This fairly new sculpture, Oberlin Rising, by @thomassayreartist is one of my favorite things about living in the neighborhood. On Being Kara Walker's Daughter

Editors Note: On Mother's Day, we're celebrating contemporary artists who challenge the idea that women have to make a choice between motherhood and an art practice. Octavia Bürgel is the 19-year-old daughter of American interdisciplinary artist Kara Walker, and an artist in her own right. The New York City-based photographer is currently studying at Oberlin College, has had her work featured in Zug Magazine and Lenny Letter, and currently has zines on sale at Dashwood Books. Creators reached out to Bürgel and asked her to write a personal essay about what it's like to have a mother who is certifiably a "genius."

My mother raised me strong, and good, and I am very grateful. I cannot claim to have had an unremarkable upbringing. My parents, both artists, exposed me to a conceptual world far beyond the perception of many of my peers and encouraged me to pursue my artistic interests. Yet I remain mystified when people make assumptions about my upbringing having been in some chaotically lenient household.

At some point in my youth I realized that my mother, Kara Walker, had accrued a decent amount of success. At that point it was made clear to me I was not to treat her any differently than I had prior—and she gave me no reason to, so I didn't. Like most other mothers I know, mine soothes and protects, dotes and encourages, cooks and cleans and plays, jokes, annoys, confounds… In reality, I have never thought of myself as an artist's daughter, but solely as my mother's daughter; and since my mother does most things artfully I inherited her sensibilities anyway.

This is not to say that she shielded me from the art world. Growing up I was privy to all of its trends and controversies. But my mother, the art world, and I function as an ever-evolving trio, and while my mother and I each require the other two to sustain, I cannot say that the art world has needed me for anything.

In a recent phone call, she tells me that I seemed to have made my mind up about art by the time I was five. At the 2002 Documenta11, I found myself frustrated by a piece by Brazilian conceptual artist Clido Meireles. Titled Disappearing Element/ Disappeared Element (Imminent Past) , the work consisted of a series of stands selling popsicles made of plain ice. Deeply disappointed by the flavorlessness of my "treat," I staunchly proclaimed, "Oh I get it, being an artist just means making something that tricks people." As a child, my proximity to art imbued in me a profound skepticism. Still, as I grew older my interests began to lead me down that same road, and I find myself falling into the family trade.

During the aforementioned phone call, she admits that she sometimes hid behind me. Using me as either a reason to not go to events or bringing me to events and using my presence as a reason to not talk to people. I am fine with this.

My mother and I often joke about the expectation that all the daughters of contemporary Black artists know each other, and honestly it is a trend that is generally true. But the novelty of their success is not lost on me. Being my mother's daughter has proven to me that, even in the seemingly bottomless chasm of modern politics and current events, Black women's history of perseverance is so deeply ingrained that we will continue to resist and rebuild to create equitable futures.

In writing about my mother's successes, both in her career and in raising me, I realize that I never put much thought into the two distinct worlds she inhabited, because she navigated them both so effortlessly.

My mother is a mother. And an artist. And the two never felt like they were incompatible.

The sun is behind Ben, so he can’t use that to excuse his watery eyes as his son gets married.

Kara notices his too-rapid blinking. “They’re lovely together,” she murmurs, soft enough to not interfere with the end of the wedding ceremony. “You should be proud of your boy, Ben. But if you don’t want him to see you teary-eyed...”

She leans in closer and whispers a few things that make him swap damp eyes for reddened cheeks.
