"Percepção do medo" (uptake fear) - cinema.

Skull: The Mask
There’s a lot of good filmmaking and some potentially interesting ideas in Armando Fonseca and Kapel Furman’s Brazilian SKULL: THE MASK (2020, Shudder). After a strong start, however, they’re overshadowed by a standard monster-on-the-loose plot that prevents the writer-directors from carrying their ideas to fruition. In a well-staged flashback, what appears to be a Nazi group steals a pre-Columbian mask in the Amazon and attempts to perform some kind of ritual with it. The fight scenes are well-staged and edited, as is the failed attempt to harvest the mask’s magic. In the present, a construction project uncovers the mask and sends it to Sao Paolo, where it starts out as a pawn in a battle among ancient pagans, Jesuits and a Chinese corporation out to control it. The female archaeologist transporting it has a girlfriend who tries to bring it to life in a powerful hallucinatory scene, only for the mask to kill them both. By this point, Fonseca and Furman have created some fascinating tensions between jungle and city, pagan and Christian and upper and lower classes. But then the mask possesses one of the cleaning crew at the crime scene, and any thought of deeper meanings or consideration of social and cultural conflicts in a colonized country goes out the window. The possessed cleaner starts lumbering around the city killing people in order to let some elder god take over the Earth. There’s one fight scene that starts out effectively silhouetted against stained glass windows, but then they move, and it just becomes another excuse for gore. Interestingly, the film becomes more of a colonial document than a post-colonial commentary. Its image of Anhanga, the god behind the mask, is based on Christian redefinitions of it as solely a force of evil. The film’s one saving grace is Natalia Rodrigues’ performance as the police detective assigned to the murders while also investigating some child abductions and dealing with guilt over a past incident in which she had killed some children (I know, that’s a lot of plot to carry). Her physicality is highly expressive, and she does a good job reflecting her inner conflicts. The script never fully explores her past, but she’s so vivid it almost doesn’t need to.

As a fan of both The Mask, and Halloween III... this sounds pretty badass. Like you remade The Mask, but it turns you into Jason Vorhees.
