Opus Colors Episode 1 Review: Perception Art Seems Cool
Here’s the review to one of the three animes I am watching this season. My first impressions? I feel like I have to see more to truly understand the story, but it’s not bad so far.
From what I’m seeing, the anime is about Perception art, which is basically AR/VR type art. There is a school dedicated to it, which is where our three main protagonists attend.
I think Perception art is a cool concept in general. The way you can make stuff via AR/VR makes me wonder if it’ll be a thing in the future. However, my gripe is that the animation for the Perception art stuff can be a bit…weird? Like there are floating eggs at times but there are other instances of flowers and a wolf. Though, the little story with the masked boy was super cool and the best usage of perception art so far. If the anime keeps giving that sort of animation, I think this would be okay.
The first protagonist Kazuya Yamanashi is a Perception artist due to his parents’ influence. He stays in touch with his childhood friend Jun, but is distanced from the other one, Takise, who is two years older than him.
The school they attend is divided into two sections, Artists and Graders. Both sides are heavily hostile towards each other and it makes no sense to me. If you’re going to work together in the art industry, wouldn’t it be best to work together? I think that the school is going to be united by the end. Kazuya and Jun are Artists while Takise is a Grader, by the way.
There are a lot of characters that I can’t really keep track of. Hopefully, pairing them together will help me understand who they all are because a large cast from the get go is going to get messy if not done properly. The most jarring thing about the character designs is that all the characters HAVE THE EXACT SAME FACE! Just tweaking the eyes and changing the hair style won’t conceal these eyes of mine. I can see that they all suffer from same face syndrome. Gosh, am I going to be able to remember all these characters?
The voice cast is superb; it’s pretty much the reason why I wanted to watch and review this anime. Even if this anime turns out bad, I will enjoy it for the cast. For now, I can hear Yuma Uchida, Natsuki Hanae (though, he was a bit hard to decipher since his range for cute teen boys varies depending on the appearance), Ryota Ohsaka, Nobuhiko Okamoto and Daisuke Ono so far. I have to hear the others later on to see who they are voiced by.
The music so far seems generic. Though, the song used in the perception art portion was good. Other than that, the regular BGM are just there—not memorable at all.
For now, I’m probably going to write shorter reviews for this anime because there’s not much I can talk about since I don’t know anything right now. All I know is that the reason Kazuya and Takise had a falling out was due to an accident that caused Kazuya’s parents’ death. Yikes. There’s going to be angst in this anime? I’m never prepared for sudden angst.

If you were not previously aware, there is a My Hero Academia musical theater adaptation called the Ultra Stage. I've been watching videos of it and it is so good! I am obsessed with it and you should look it up yourself. As of right now there are four stage plays that cover the show's events up to the end of Deku vs Kacchan Part 2. Some highlights include:
A very talented cast of actors who really embody the characters and perfectly sell the songs and choreography. The big highlights for me are Ryota Kobayashi as Bakugo, Yume Takeuchi as Ochako, Raita as Shigaraki, and Yuki Okamoto as Present Mic.
Great costumes dedicated to faithfully recreating the looks from the show (seriously, Present Mic and Shigaraki looked like they stepped out of the screen and materialized into live action)
Some really dang good songs! My personal highlights for me are "All Might" (All Might's pretty catchy theme music that gets multiple reprisals), "All Might: Izuku and Shigaraki Version" (A specific reprisal I want to highlight that's an incredible duet that takes place during the mall scene), "Evil is Spreading" (A villain song by Dabi, Toga and Twice), and finally "I Want To Be a Hero" (the main theme that plays at every stage play).
Gran Torino has an entire song where he sings about frozen taiyaki using his cane as a guitar while All Might, Endeavor, Aizawa, Present Mic and Best Jeanist put on white suit jackets and serve as his back up singers. The whole thing is bonkers enough to deserve its own separate mention.
They use a ton of practical effects to recreate the Quirks in live action, such as ribbons for Tsuyu's tongue and Sero's tape, mini sparklers for Bakugo's explosions and Kaminari's electricity, and they even managed to recreate Shigaraki' disintegration power and I still don't fully understand how they did it.
The stage play is very funny. There's always someone in the ensemble doing something silly in the background, every single person hams it up like no tomorrow (except Aizawa naturally), and they have a ton of fun with the stage play medium.
The transformation between big and small All Might is to have one run on stage, stand in front of the other while matching his pose, and then take over while the first All Might runs off stage. It's super endearing.
Nezu in this play is a puppet they make the teachers carry around and interact with, and seeing it fills my heart with joy every single time.
During act breaks, they have Aizawa, Present Mic and Aoyama come on stage to entertain the audience with improv skits they do in character. They are ridiculous even compared to everything else that happens, and they need to be seen to be believed.
The fight scenes are very well choreographed and feel like actual combat.
Even in spite of all the goofy elements, they actually do take the story seriously and there are some really tense moments, most of which are Shigaraki's scenes.
There's a very funny detail at the end of the first play where every single actor comes on stage and does the "Go Beyond, Plus Ultra!", except Shigaraki, who just looks at them in annoyance
I know I mention Shigaraki specifically a lot in this list but the dude who plays him goes so hard in the role that I have to give him extra credit.
To portray Hagakure, they use a projector to create an invisible person wearing clothes and have Nazuka Kaori, her actual Japanese VA from the show, pre record a bunch of lines and play them on stage.
This one isn't really a "highlight" per say but they somehow made Midnight's outfit even hornier then canon and that's genuinely impressive tbh.
There's a scene of Tsuyu dancing around in tap shoes and it's so perfectly adorable.
The subtle character development of Todoroki slowly getting involved with the dancing and shenanigans as the plays go on are fantastic.
They don't always have all the kids in every play so instead they have items to represent the ones who aren't around, ie in the first three plays they have a smile pile of sugar cubes glued together and everyone calls it Sato while Kirishima carries it around everywhere.
There's one act break skit in particular that kills me where Aoyama and Twice try to fight for the audience's attention.
Kota punching Deku in the nuts is somehow just as funny in live action despite him obviously not actually punching him.
They made the doctor healing Izuku after the Muscular fight so funny for literally no reason and I'm so glad they did.
In this recording I watched, Aizawa got an actual leg cramp mid improv skit and his and Mic's struggle to stay in character was honestly gold.
They manage to make All for One, his big fight with All Might, and the United States of Smash just as badass as they were in the anime.
Koda's pet bunny in this version is portrayed as Bakugo in a bunny suit. That's a highlight in and of itself.
Bakugo throughout the Deku vs Kacchan Part 2 fight and the end of the final show of the fourth stage play looks like he's constantly on the verge of tears and it works so well.
In conclusion, this is so amazing, more people need to see it and I hope that they get to continue and adapt the rest of the series.

The Marginal Service Episode 1 Review: Construction Worker Power Rangers
From what I’ve seen in this episode, the concept is like Power Rangers but with construction workers. The overall thoughts I got from this episode is that it’s actually pretty interesting. It’s mainly about a secret organization called Marginal Service that track down and destroy aliens called Borderlanders that invaded Earth. It’s only up to the group to stop and destroy these creatures.
All the members are introduced right off the bat, but the MC of this quirky anime is Brian Nightraider. He’s a foreign detective who immigrated to Japan five years prior and has been working as an excellent detective until he got fired for “brutality” purposes. Yes, the setting takes place in Japan, but the main characters are all foreigners/immigrants. What’s interesting is that Japan is referred to as “Japan”, the global name of the country and not “Nihon”, the Japanese name of the country.
Brian is the rookie of the group as he gets a letter from Theodore, the head of Marginal Service after he got fired. He’s headstrong and has a strong sense of justice. He’s a normal human so he’s sort of like a fish out of water when it comes to Borderlanders and what not. He seems to be in a frenemy situation with Zeno Stokes as Zeno gives zero fucks about him while Brian is short-tempered. I’m anticipating the sort of relationships he’ll form later on. Right now, I think that Brian is interesting because he’s the fish out of water guy for now. Mamoru Miyano’s voice acting is good here.
The other characters shown right now are just archetypes for now until they get fleshed out more. Zeno is the stoic one. Robin is flirty and British. Bolts is macho and American. Lyra is a pretty lady who knows she’s pretty. Cyrus is tired, emo, possibly the only Asian amongst the foreigners and the doctor. Theodore is the old guy. Pecks is the mascot. You know what? I’m interested to see what their stories are because I’m sure they all joined because the Borderlanders ruined their lives some way or another and which is why they joined this secret organization…am I watching modern Demon Slayer but with aliens? Alien Shooters?
Although the studio that made this is Japanese, the cast being Japanese voice actors, etc, I think this show was observant enough to input “stereotypes” that you see in American shows. For example, Bolts and Robin don’t seem to get along which is a common thing you see when you have an American and a British in a show. Cyrus is most likely a foreign born Japanese but he’s a doctor, influencing the “Asian people are smart so they are doctors” stereotype. There’s also Danny who dies, enforcing the trope of “black guy dies first” in Western media. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but I find it amusing.
The voice cast is 10/10 perfection as they are all S-class seiyuus. Mamoru Miyano plays the lead Brian. Toshiyuki Morikawa plays Zeno. Yuichi Nakamura plays Robin. Tomokazu Sugita plays Bolts. Kaori Nazuka plays Lyra. Hiro Shimono plays Cyrus. Shinichiro Miki plays Theodore. Kouki Uchiyama (not voiced in this episode) is Pecks Desmont, the squirrel. Yes, you heard me. Uchiyama plays the SQUIRREL. I’m sure the anime has a lot going for it if they had the budget to hire S-class voice actors.
The opening song bangs too. Mamoru Miyano never disappoints, honestly. I think the ending song is going to be sung by Yuma Uchida, which I am stoked because he’s a good singer too. Uchida will also be a side character in this anime, which is also hype factor.
Overall, I’m going to continue watching this anime to see where it will head direction-wise. If you didn’t know, it’s an anime original, so the storyline is going to be a mystery. I’m excited though. I can’t wait to see what this anime has in store.
